Jamie North: Inflection

11 - 17th November. Open Evening: Wednesday 13th November 6-8pm

About the gallery:

H

enley on Thames based gallery, Informality, is collaborating with Pi Artworks in London to bring the first solo show of renowned Australian sculptor Jamie North to the UK. Indicative of his critically acclaimed sculptures combining blast furnace slag, concrete and blown glass, the exhibition, titled ‘Inflection’ consists of an eroded

“The shifted column, Forward Projection, (pictured), teeters on an eroded axis, having slipped its vertical trajectory” column encircled by distorted elliptical terraria. These forms play host to living plant species native to the UK. The shifted column, Forward Projection, (pictured), teeters on an eroded axis, having slipped its vertical trajectory. The surrounding terraria sit in material contrast, their glassy surfaces indicating numerous past impacts. Together, they present as forms on the edge of a conflicted past and a perilous future. The title, Inflection, refers to a tipping point or the crossing of an ecological threshold resulting in a shift toward a new systemic direction. 28 NOVEMBER 2019

Still, Inflection resists a nihilistic reading. North’s work assuredly underlines a delicate balance at this critical ecological juncture. The assemblages of Hart’s-tongue fern (Asplenium Scolopendrium) and other indigenous UK plant species are reframed as a form of hope for complex life, however tenuous. Implicit is the presentation of opportunity through positive action. Where there is opportunity, there is at least some promise. Jamie North has exhibited widely, including numerous solo exhibitions at Sarah Cottier Gallery: Terraforms (2014), Remainder (2016), and Worlds (2019), and other commercial and institutional galleries throughout Australia. North has also completed many significant sculptural commissions including: Rock Melt (2015), Chasm (2018), and Borrowed Landscape (2019). Internationally, North exhibited in Concrete (2015) at the Tophanei-Amire Cultural Centre in Istanbul, and was a resident in the NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore Residences Programme in 2017. Other highlights include exhibiting in the 20th Biennale of Sydney. Work by Jamie North is held in major public collections including, Museum of Old and New (MONA) and the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV). The Exhibition is running from 11th November until 17th November at Pi Artworks, 11 Eastcastle Street, London W1W 8EF

Informality, based in Henley on Thames, is a new independent gallery operating in the UK which curates and supports international contemporary artists with a concentration on topics such as the environment and co-existence. Their purpose is to collaborate with artists site specifically. The gallery has a dynamic contemporary programme under this context, to investigate and discuss new ways in which the visual perception of art can be changed by carefully considering art and environment combined. Artists manoeuvre through exploratory mediums such as installation and digital devices, as well as reinterpreting classical mediums. Informality operates with a dedication acting on our concern for the environment by seeking new procedures that can educate our need for sustainability. www.informality.co

Celebrate Christmas with Tramp

L

ondon’s Tramp members club has enjoyed a year of celebrations in preparation for its official, 50th anniversary party on December 17 - but for those hoping to squeeze in a last toast, the iconic venue is offering members a luxurious tasting menu to help see in the new year. The club on Jermyn Street has seen in more new years than any of its competitors and just as its first members celebrated the turn of the decade in 1970, corks will pop and champagne will flow around the tables of the venue’s restaurant and discotheque. The evening will begin with Louis Roederer Brut Premier as guests are invited to take their tables for a seven course menu incorporating Turbot fillet with butter poached langoustines; Beef Wellington served with sauce Périgourdine and Champagne granita. But Tramp’s reputation was not built on fine food alone, and as the final Macaroons are polished off and guests begin to edge towards the dancefloor, it will be the club’s legendary party atmosphere that sweeps the crowd into the year 2020. It is a momentous occasion for the club, not just because it marks the end of their 50th anniversary celebrations, but because the team have been busy ensuring the next half decade is as successful as the last. General Manager, David Fleming says: “Tramp’s history is, without doubt, more celebrated and famous than any other members club in London, if not the world. But as a team, we are keen to look forwards and never rest on our laurels. “Tramp membership is exclusive and much sought after, and we continuously strive to keep it

that way, with announcements planned for the new year that will make that Gold ‘Tramp’ card even more valuable than it is today. “But our ethos will always remain the same: Great food, great cocktails, great service and a great atmosphere. “And whether it’s your first visit to the club or your fiftieth year as a member, the club is your home from home.” Prospective members may apply at www.tramp.co.uk/membership

A

ward-winning Silent Pool Gin was launched just five years ago but is already one of the UK’s most popular premium gin brands. It is a contemporary London Dry gin and is handcrafted at a small, independently owned distillery in Surrey using a unique four-stage distillation process and a recipe that combines 24 botanicals and water from the Silent Pool itself, which is adjacent to the distillery. The result is a gin of clarity and depth of flavour with complex yet refreshing notes of florals and citrus. It is beautifully balanced in a G&T paired with Indian tonic water and a twist of orange zest to garnish, smooth enough to serve neat, and also exceptional in cocktails. The iconic teal and copper embossed bottle features an intricate botanical design that is shared across a range of Silent Pool Gin glassware, candle holders and bar accessories. Each makes a stunning and highly individual Christmas gift for gin lovers, whether they are friends and family or you are treating yourself! Each Silent Pool Gin Christmas Cracker contains a 5cl bottle of gin together with the essential festive hats and jokes. There’s no better way to kick off your festive feast (£50 per box of six). celebrates the

remarkable

achievements

of women in rowing T

he River & Rowing Museum is excited to announce the opening of a significant new display in its International Rowing Gallery this month in recognition of the incredible impact women have had on British rowing in recent years. The new display will celebrate the inspirational story of British women’s rowing at the Olympic and Paralympic Games from Sydney 2000 through to Tokyo 2020. Fascinating personal stories bring the display to life, illustrating the many pathways which have brought women to rowing at elite level and onto successes in the Olympics and Paralympics, providing role models for a new generation of rowers. This display takes us on a journey through the evolution of British women’s rowing, from Sydney 2000 to Tokyo 2020. National Lottery funding in 1997, awarded equally to men’s and women’s elite sport, changed the landscape of British rowing. For the first time, women rowers had a formal, longterm programme to develop their potential, with better facilities, regular training and paid coaches. The outstanding win of a Silver medal by the British women’s quad at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, the first fruits of that National Lottery funding, proved that investing in elite rowing was key to Olympic medal success. The number of women competing at the Olympics has increased significantly over the past 20 years, and at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 there will be an equal number of men’s and women’s rowing events for the first time. Gender participation equality has already been achieved at

38 NOVEMBER 2019

the Paralympics. Annamarie Phelps CBE says “Women’s rowing has only come to the fore in very recent decades and it is great timing that Museum are celebrating the enormous contributions made by our female rowers to the success of British rowing whilst the viewership of women’s sport is at such a high. I hope these new displays and the inspiring stories they tell can encourage young women (and old) to reach for the stars and preserve the history of our sport for future generations.” As part of the display, the renowned ‘Unbeaten Boat’ comes to the River & Rowing Museum. This unique installation will tell the untold story of the iconic 2012 racing hull that took Helen Glover and Heather Stanning to the 2016 Olympics without losing a race. British Rowing is generously loaning the boat to the Museum and the display will recount the ecstatic moment at the London Olympics when Helen Glover and Heather Stanning won the first GB Gold Medal of the 2012 Games. Hear first-hand at the Museum’s Rowing Futures Gala Reception, how The ‘Unbeaten Boat’ helped Helen and Heather to a number of GB National Trials wins, 45 International Championship wins, and laid the foundations for their second Olympic Gold at Rio in the new 2016 version of the hull. Natalie Patel, Head of Collections & Exhibitions at the Museum, says “I’m delighted that we’re showcasing the incredible talent of British women rowers in our International Rowing Gallery. These intensely personal stories about getting into rowing and then succeeding against all the odds are truly inspirational. I hope that our visitors enjoy discovering just how these Olympic and Paralympic heroes first got into the sport!” The powerful display has even more of an impact in the context of the incredible leap which women’s sport has made in recent years.

“Women’s rowing has only come to the fore in very recent decades and it is great timing that Museum are celebrating the enormous contributions made by our female rowers to the success of British rowing whilst the viewership of women’s sport is at such a high”

B P Collins advises why you should speak to a lawyer before releasing equity from your home

E

quity release is an increasingly popular alternative to selling your property or re-mortgaging, for people who wish to free up some money, but still remain in their own home. In 2018, over 80,000 homeowners over the age of 55 released equity from their home with lending totalling £3.94 billion according to the Equity Release Council. What can Equity Release be used for? Equity Release can play a big part during the retirement years, especially when people are living longer. This tax-free disposable income can be used to improve your home and garden, provide a living inheritance to your children and grandchildren; help with your own mortgage repayments, buy a holiday home or pay off other debts. What options are available? The most common scheme is an equity release mortgage, which releases a capital sum. Instead of paying monthly interest as with a standard mortgage, generally interest accrues over the mortgage term and is added to the sum owing at the end. Subject to the terms of the equity release mortgage, generally the individual can live at the property as their main residence for as long as their health permits. Another option is a Home Reversion Plan, which enables you to receive some or all of the value of your home, but only if you continue to live in the property. This type of scheme requires you to sell your property, usually, at less than its market value in return for a tax-free lump sum, regular income or both. The company that buys your home will provide a lifetime lease allowing you to live in the property for the remainder of your life without having to pay monthly rent.

40 NOVEMBER 2019

Importance of seeking legal advice Although equity release schemes can be a useful way of releasing much needed cash, a good lawyer should always ensure you understand the possible risks. B P Collins’ residential property lawyers frequently advise on such schemes in accordance with the Equity Release Council’s laws and guidelines. For example, we will make you aware that the equity may impact on your pension and means tested benefits and review the small print so you’re fully aware of how the equity will be paid off, either upon death or if moving into a care home. You should also ensure you take financial advice when taking out an equity mortgage, so that you are fully informed of the impact on your future financial position. It is also advisable for your beneficiaries to be informed about how their inheritance may be affected. For example, the interest accrued on £100,000 over ten years, means that there may not be much value left in your home to pass on to your loved ones after this has been repaid. It is also important to remember, like any mortgage, that the lender will need to consent to any alterations or works carried out to the property and that the lender will have a first legal charge over the property meaning they will be able to sell the property if the terms of the equity mortgage are breached and you will ultimately lose your home. Different equity release schemes use different financing mechanisms and present different risks, it is therefore important that a solicitor check the details of any agreement before you agree to any form of equity release. For further advice please contact Martina Razaq, residential property partner on 01753 889995 or email martina.razaq@bpcollins.co.uk

O

ur inspiration for this dish was to use a seasonal, locally sustainable quality product from our very own Chiltern Hills, Wild Shot Venison from Stokenchurch. Baking the celeriac with a salt crust and Douglas fir pine needles gives an aromatic

festive aroma with an intense flavour. The foraged rosehips and hawthorn berries add an excellent acidity to the dish. These ingredients can be easily substituted with more readily available citrus peel for the pine needles and cranberries for the foraged berries.

RECIPE: Saddle of Chiltern Venison with Caramelised Shallots, Salt Baked Celeriac, Hawthorn berry and Rosehip Emulsion, Venison sauce Ingredients Serves 4 • 4 x 150g wild shot venison steak cut from the saddle • Approx 50g butter and olive oil for frying • 4 baby shallots halved caramelised and then peeled • 4 egg whites • A small handful Douglas fir

pine needles (if not available alternatively use some citrus peel) • 150 g rock salt • 1 whole celeriac • 2 heads of cavolo nero – picked off the stalk and washed • 100 g hawthorn berry • 100 g rosehips (can be substituted with 200 g cranberries) • 200 ml orange juice

• 50 g caster sugar Venison Jus • 500ml chicken stock • 150g roasted venison bones • 2 carrots • 1 stick celery • 2 onions • 2 cloves garlic • 80ml red wine

Method Emulsion 1. Cook the berries in the orange juice with the sugar in a small pan until tender. 2. Liquidise and pass through a fine sieve

To serve 1. Blanch the cavolo nero in boiling salted water for 2 minutes 2. Plunge into ice cold water

D omestic A buse : There is no age limit

A

ge UK has recently published a report which calls upon the Government ‘to make sure the voices of older people are heard, their rights are protected, and their needs included in future legislation addressing domestic abuse’. Currently in England and Wales, Crime Survey does not collect data on adults over the age of 74. This is despite the fact that people of any age can experience domestic abuse and older people can be particularly vulnerable to certain forms of abuse. In 2017, over 200,000 people aged between 60 and 74 experienced domestic abuse and 23% of victims of domestic homicides were over the age of 60.* The fact that data is not collected from people over the age of 74 means that we do not know the true prevalence of domestic abuse amongst the older generation. More importantly, older survivors of domestic abuse can face significant barriers in leaving abusive situations and many may be too frightened to reach out for help. The report highlights the fact that these barriers ‘can be severe for survivors who have been subject to years of abuse and feel that it is unresolvable, are experiencing long term health conditions or disability, or those who rely on their abuser for their 46 NOVEMBER 2019

care or money.’ In 2018/19 alone, the Age UK Advice Line received 655 enquiries relating to domestic abuse.** The charity are seeking a number of changes to help tackle domestic abuse; they are not calling for vital services and resources to be diverted from younger victims but are instead asking that law makers consider how to make the best use of resources that already exist. Age UK’s focus is not upon the criminal justice response to domestic abuse but the wider context. Whilst the criminal justice system is one element of the fight against abuse, Age UK propose that a new law is needed that goes further in recognising the role of public health bodies in addressing the issue and enabling survivors to escape abuse relationships. The changes sought by Age UK include: • Data on domestic abuse must be gathered for all ages, not just people aged 74 and under. • There should be training for health care practitioners, including GPs and practice nurses, who work with older people, particularly during hospital admission and discharge. • Better links between the NHS and police are needed to make sure older victims of abuse are properly protected and supported.

If you wish to speak to anyone confidentially about domestic abuse within your relationship and the legalities of ending that relationship, please do contact Emma McMorrow of our family team. *ONS (2018), Domestic abuse in England and Wales – Appendix tables. MANAGING AN INHERITANCE R

eceiving an inheritance can generate mixed feelings – sadness that a loved one has passed away, relief that maybe some debts can be paid off, or uncertainty over how best to make use of your inheritance whilst ensuring there’s something left to pass down to future generations. Receiving an inheritance may be the first time you’ve had to worry about investment options and can be quite daunting if that’s not something you have experience of. There is no one right answer as everyone’s circumstances are different, but some things to consider are…. • Paying off any expensive credit cards & store cards first • A lot of mainstream mortgages today are at very competitive interest rates, around the c. 2% mark, so it wouldn’t necessarily make sense to pay down a mortgage as your money could be put to better use depending on your attitude to investment risk & return. For some people, they just want to know the mortgage is gone and paid off. For others, if the mortgage payments are affordable and they’re happy the mortgage will be paid off before retirement they might prefer to invest their inheritance elsewhere to generate capital growth… (it’s always best to take proper advice on your situation, and check with your lender first to see whether early repayment charges apply) • One thing’s for sure, with cash savings interest rates at a fraction of 1% and inflation at c. 2%, money held in cash will go backwards in real terms, so that’s probably not the answer • Many people have in the past opted for ‘bricks & mortar’, and have bought Buy to Let properties. Whilst property has been a good performing asset class the tax rules around second properties have become particularly punitive and so on its own, residential property is becoming less attractive. Coupled with the fact that it brings with it the hands on hassle of dealing with tenants, and managing repairs & maintenance (which are often underestimated), it’s not always the ‘passive’ investment it’s thought to be I work with clients to provide professionally managed and well diversified investment options that suit their personal circumstances and objectives. These are tailored to their attitude to risk and regularly reviewed and managed by me to form part of their overall financial life plan. Using the most appropriate investment tax wrappers is also important, to ensure everything is as tax efficient and admin easy as possible during your lifetime, and will pass down to the next generation as tax efficiently as possible too. If you’ve had to pay Inheritance Tax on your inheritance, you’ll understand the importance of timely tax planning! The key point is to get some proper financial advice and look at options that work for you and your situation. Unless you’re familiar with the financial industry there’s every chance you ‘don’t know what you don’t know’ and a professional can

A Price Butchers of Holtspur Parade, Beaconsfield, occupied the shop from 1957 through to 2016. Deciding that the time had come to focus on other areas of his business, including the catering, BBQ and Hog Roasts, Derek decided back in 2016 that the time had come to close the shop. With the disappointment from loyal customers and the fact that actually, he still had time on his hands Derek chose to still run a butchers but rather than the traditional retails shop that we all recognise, more of a personalised service. Derek has been running the butchers this way, predominantly over social media and word of mouth ever since. Offering high quality products at heavily reduced prices due to minimal overheads Derek is bringing the locals of Beaconsfield the standards of meat that they have always enjoyed, at amazing prices. Selling traditional joints, aged English beef, English lamb and English pork as standard you can expect you can expect only the best. So, how about when you want that little variation to the norm? A variety of options are available for his clients, marinated lemon chicken, teriyaki chicken, hand-made pork skewers for the BBQ, handmade sausages and other seasonal

ackie Ladbury is a local Hertfordshire writer who writes heart-warming contemporary and historical women’s fiction that is always guaranteed a happy ever after. She is married to Stephen Ladbury who is a local bespoke kitchen manufacturer and together, with two cats and two children, they live in an old Edwardian house that has taken up far too much of their time renovating. Before Jackie became a writer she was an airstewardess and witnessing that it really is love that makes the world go around, she determined to put the same sparkle and emotion into her stories. Her life is no longer as exotic (or chaotic) as it used to be and she now lives a quiet life spending her days making up stories and finding excuses not to go to the gym. Her latest romance is a Christmas book that has just been released. Happy Christmas Eve is out in eBook form on all the usual platforms, Apple Kobo and Kindle.

All I want for Christmas is you … or you? Eve Halligan is back in her hometown for Christmas after a whirlwind few years touring with her band, the Molotovs. A lot has changed since she left, but two things have stayed the same. One: Eve is head-over-heels in love with Lucien Malikov, the Molotovs’ bad boy lead singer. Two: Lucien is completely indifferent to her. Still, Eve dreams that this could be the Christmas where she convinces Lucien that they’re made for each other. But when childhood friend and local caterer Theo Wright comes back into her life bringing with him festive cupcake and sausage roll conundrums, Eve begins to question whether her Christmas dreams have been wasted on the wrong man … Available from Amazon 58 NOVEMBER 2019

M

arlow Bottom Pre-school CIO is delighted that Marlow Green, the newest greengrocers in town, has very kindly agreed to donate fruit and vegetables for the children’s snack time on a weekly basis. Mohamed Farhi, Director of Marlow Green, was only too happy to help when he was approached with the request to support the Preschool in this way and welcomed the Pre-school Manager, Tina Horler, and one of the children, Niamh Waite, to collect their first donation on Sunday 13th October. Mohamed let Niamh have free reign to choose what she thought the other children would like, with some guidance from Mrs Horler of course, and among other things she chose some mini cucumbers, delicious organic oranges and a punnet of vibrant strawberries. Mohamed Farhi, Director, said “We have thoroughly enjoyed our first six months of trading in the town and are pleased to be able to support local children in this way. produce. We look forward to providing the children with their snacks on a weekly basis going forward.” Tina Horler, Pre-school Manager said, “We are very grateful to Marlow Green for agreeing to donate produce for the children’s snacks. It is very important to us that the children eat healthily while they are in our care, but unfortunately the fruit and vegetables we provide aren’t covered by the fees and Government funding. As a charity, we work hard to raise money through various fundraising activities. This partnership is extremely significant as it means that what we raise can now be directed to support the children’s education and learning.” Like us at www.facebook.com/ marlowbottompreschool

Established in the early 1960s, the pre-school was opened in the Village Hall to provide a happy and stimulating environment for the children of the community. In 1990, the pre-school became a parent-run pre-school and achieved charity status shortly afterwards. And in 2014, we converted to a Charitable Incorporated Organisation and hence became Marlow Bottom Pre-school CIO. Our aim is to advance the development and education of pre-school children; to encourage their independence and selfconfidence through the provision of equal learning opportunities within a safe and caring environment. www.marlowbottom preschool.org.uk

unior pupils at a South Oxfordshire school have been exploring polar ice caps, arid deserts and yawning caves thanks to an exciting project focused on exploration and the environment. And now they can look forward to sharing their hard work with none other than the world’s greatest living explorer, Sir Ranulph Fiennes. Cranford House, a small independent school in South Oxfordshire, has been running the inspiring project in parallel with several local primary schools whose Years 5 and 6 pupils will also be there on the day to meet the great man himself. As well as enjoying the chance to discuss their work on exploration and climate change with Sir Ranulph, they will also hear him speak of his experiences of life in some of the world’s most extreme places. Amongst his many achievements, Sir Ranulph Fiennes successfully climbed Mount Everest, becoming the first person ever to have climbed Everest and crossed both polar ice-caps. He is also the only man alive to have travelled around the planet’s Circumpolar surface. His latest challenge will see him attempting to become the first person to have crossed both polar ice caps and climbed the highest mountain on every continent. His expedition will raise funds for the Marie Curie charity and Cranford House is proud to be backing his expedition fundraising. What to get the man who has everything? 74 NOVEMBER 2019

T

“We have plenty of great gifts that any man would be delighted to find under the tree this year”

he festive season is almost upon us and Christmas is fast approaching, so too is the annual dilemma ‘what to get the man who already has everything? ‘. Buying a gift for your nearest and dearest is even more challenging if you haven’t been given any helpful hints. So where to start… Practical items are usually a safe bet, shirts, ties, scarfs, fragrance or the ubiquitous socks are always useful. For that ‘certain someone’ however, something special might be greatly appreciated. The finest Scottish cashmere, Dubarry boots, for example, or maybe a Gant down jacket. Presents that they may not think to get for themselves, we have plenty of great gifts that any man would be delighted to find under the tree this year. In the unlikely event that things aren’t quite right, then returning or exchanging them to us is as easy as pie, or perhaps pudding. We are also happy to gift wrap your purchases for you, saving you another job at this busy time of year. So that’s Christmas all wrapped up in Wendover. INTRODUCING REZUM What is it?

Rezūm is a novel steam or water vapour treatment for BPH (benign prostate hypertrophy). Steam energy is used to ablate (or remove) the particular part of the prostate that enlarges and causes symptoms due to BPH. The procedure is done as a day case and is an option for men who fail or cannot tolerate medical treatment for their obstructive urinary symptoms. This new procedure has revolutionised treatment options for men wishing to preserve relatively normal sexual function after surgical treatment for BPH. Rezūm is a viable alternative to HoLEP or TURP.

How is the procedure done? Under a light anaesthetic, at cystoscopy, pressurised steam is injected into the prostate adenoma at several key points. The procedure takes approximately 3 - 7 minutes to perform. The resultant tissue swelling necessitates the patient going home with a temporary catheter, but subsequently, apoptosis (cell death) causes the treated tissue to shrink back and open up the obstructing prostate tissue. After treatment men notice a gradual improvement in urinary symptoms over the coming two to three months. NICE has 78 NOVEMBER 2019

published a Medtech Innovation Briefing (MIB) guidance for Rezūm. Rezūm is available now at the Spire Thames Valley for self-pay patients and is also covered by insurance companies. Whether your goal is to improve your skin health, reduce fines lines and wrinkles, sculpt your body by removing stubborn pockets of fat, or simply to look less tired, our multi-award winning, surgeon-led clinic has a customised treatment plan for you. We believe the fundamental basis of a successful aesthetic procedure or skincare treatment is a good quality consultation with a skilled, qualified practitioner who fully understands your needs, and looks at your treatment as a journey, not a one-off event.

Then we tailor a treatment plan designed around your needs, goals and lifestyle. During your in-depth consultation, you have the opportunity to highlight any areas concerning you, whether these are skin conditions such as acne, pigmentation or rosacea, or worries about signs of ageing and a desire to rejuvenate your skin. Your skin will then be analysed by a state-of-the-art 3D digital skin imaging system called the VISIA, which takes surface and sub-surface images of your skin and develops a detailed complexion analysis.

PERFECTLY POLISHED: AUTUMN/WINTER NAIL TRENDS These are the nail hues to choose this season, says Katie Wright

S

urveying the AW19 backstage beauty trends, when it comes to nails, there were some bonkers but brilliant - designs on show. From curved, two-inch talons at Rick Owens to shiny golden fingertips at Lanvin, these lavish creations are not exactly ideal if you need to use your phone, rummage in your bag or make it through the day without harming yourself or others. But at the other end of the spectrum, the catwalk nail gurus have given us some beautifully wearable options for autumn/winter, as have the new-season nail polish collections. In the mood for a mani makeover? Here are five trends to try...

Classic reds The mani equivalent of a scarlet lip, shiny red nails never go out of style. At Ashley Williams, manicurist Michelle Class made the case for a slightly longer nail length with rounded tips and a ‘true red’ hue, while at Oscar de la Renta, neatly filed nails were painted blood red.

Peacci Candy Nail Polish, £10

Pearls Once the preserve of grannies and ladies who lunch, pearls have made a massive comeback in fashion recently, seen on everything from bags and hair accessories to knitwear. Now, they’re on nails. At the Adeam AW19 show, models had pearl beads of varying sizes dotted on top of a metallic blue base, while at Yuhan Wang, tiny pearls were peppered all the way down the fingers. Sounds like this fits in the ‘not very wearable’ category? To make it both pretty and practical, instead of using beads, paint dots with a pearlescent polish instead.

From heritage tweeds to leather trousers and swishy skirts, Seventies fashion is a major trend for AW19, so you’ll need the perfect polish to match. Enter Mavala’s Retro collection. This six-piece line-up has all the shades you need, from creamy ivory and slate grey, to burgundy and pale peach.

Slowly but surely, in response to consumer demand, the beauty industry is taking steps to become more environmentally sustainable, and that includes nail varnish. Barry M has launched a Green Origin collection of vegan polishes made from 70% ethically-sourced natural ingredients, including potato, corn and wheat. Inspired by nature, the eight wearable shades include Evergreen, a green as deep as pine needles, and Mushroom, a soft greybrown.

Deep blues Got the blues? You’ll want them when you see the stylish but simple nail art at House of Holland, where OPI technician Robbie Tomkins started with a base of teal and added a thick stroke of black at the tip to create a bold aquatic effect. Even simpler, at Giorgio Armani, models were given midnight blue nails, a look Nailberry you can recreate Moonlight, £14.50 with the purplish Moonlight from the new Nailberry autumn range. Longer lasting Autumn Colour Redhead or brunette? Claire Spreadbury reveals how to make your colour last longer this season.

O

h, how we love autumn. The hues of the season are so stylish, and they suit almost everybody. Much like the colours on the catwalk, hair is becoming warmer and more lustrous, too. But if you opt for a full head of gorgeously-rich red or deep chocolate, how can you ensure your colour lasts? We asked the experts for their top tips...

Shampoo with care “When your hair is freshly coloured, avoid shampooing for 72 hours to allow the cuticle to recover, as this will prevent initial fading,” says celebrity stylist and colourist Edward James. “If you have a very oily scalp, consider using a cowash and ditch the shampoo at least a couple of times a week. Shampoos cleanse hair more and result in colour molecules being cleansed away. You could also consider getting a water softener, as this will prevent a build up of minerals from dulling your hair. And avoid very hot water, as this will speed up colour fade.”

Go ionic “In the colder autumn months, we tend to blast our hair dry more frequently than letting it air dry, which will increase colour fade; brunettes will tend to go more brassy; blondes more yellow and reds and coppers more dull,” continues James. 84 NOVEMBER 2019

“Try investing in an ionic hairdryer, which emits negatively-charged ions that break down water molecules faster, and allow your hair to more easily absorb moisture. The ions also flatten the hair cuticle which adds shine, but also prevents your colour from fading over time.”

Banish sulphates “Use a sulphate-free colour shampoo and conditioner,” advises colour specialist Christel Lundqvist, founder and director of Stil Salon. “It seems like a simple aftercare tip, but it’s crucial to be able to prolong vibrant coloured hair, as every time you wash your hair, colour will fade. The gentle shampoo will cleanse the hair with a minimum fade effect and the conditioner will seal the cuticle locking pigments in.” Try Smith England Guardian Colour Shield Shampoo and Conditioner, £8 each, Sainsbury’s.

Refresh more and dryshampoo less “Lengthen times between shampooing to keep your hair looking vivid for longer,” says James. “Although dry shampoo is still a massive life saver for many, it tends to have the downside of making hair feel drier, as it essentially absorbs oil and creates more friction between hair strands - with the result being ‘fresher’ looking hair that is also more dehydrated. Using a scalp and hair reviver,

rather than a dry shampoo, is the way to go, particularly if you want to reduce how much you wash your hair to prevent colour fade. A hair and scalp refresher revives and refreshes second-day styles and also reduces frizz. “Aveda Rinseless Refresh, £24, is a new product which helps tame frizz. Micellar technology refreshes the scalp and it’s very lightweight, so perfect for finer hair. Oribe also has Cote d’Azur Hair Refresher, which is designed to refresh second-day hair by neutralising odour and adding condition (£22, SpaceNK.com).”

Give your colour a boost Keeping hair vibrant when it may be damaged from summer sun can be a challenge says Tom Smith, colour director at Billi Currie: “The condition of the hair must be restored in order for the colour molecules to remain stable. A great way of keeping your autumnal tones ‘salon fresh’ while conditioning your hair at the same time, is a custom-mixed pigmented conditioner. Evo Fab Pro have a fantastic system that allows me to personalise the pigment mix to any shade. You can use this in place of your regular conditioner at home every time you wash your hair (or every few washes as needed), just leave it on for a minimum of three minutes and it will leave your hair soft and super-shiny, while topping up the pigments that fade away.” You can also buy ready-made colour boosting conditioners, too. Try Evo fabulouso Colour Intensifying Conditioner, £25, or Moroccanoil Color Depositing Mask, £28.95, both LookFantastic.com

Overcome dehydration from central heating “Just like our skin, hair becomes dehydrated and this is made worse with artificial central heating,” notes James. “To overcome the drying effects, it’s worth using a weekly hair treatment on your hair. I’m a huge fan of Philip Kingsley Hair Elasticizer Treatment.” (Try the new Elasticizer Therapies Balancing Rose & Lychee Deep Conditioning Treatment, £21.50.) James adds: “In addition to treatments, make sure you seal your hair in the autumn. Use a couple of drops of hair oil or a leave-in moisture treatment. Aveda Dry Remedy Daily Moisturising Oil, £22, smells beautiful and leaves your hair feeling soft. I normally advise applying to damp hair, as it’s more easily absorbed. Oribe Super Shine Moisture Cream (£20-£50, SpaceNK.com) is also incredible and can be used on wet or dry hair, and does not leave it feeling greasy.”

“Just like our skin, hair becomes dehydrated and this is made worse with artificial central heating”

damaged by heat, it won’t be able to hold on to the colour naturally, due to the structure and cuticle being damaged, so colour will fade very quickly. Using less heated equipment means healthier hair and longer-lasting colour.”

Reduce heat styling “Minimal styling and heat usage will also help prolong vivid colour,” says Lundqvist. “Heated equipment, like tongs and hairdryers, can create colour fade due to over-styling. If the hair gets NOVEMBER 2019 85

KNITWEAR NOW: FRESH TRENDS TO SHAKE UP YOUR AUTUMN LOOK

shows you the shapes and prints to be seen in this season.

Katie Wright

A chunky jumper with puffy sleeves is ideal for teaming with an A-line mini or a floaty maxi dress and a pair of ankle boots.

4. Embrace your animal side Leopard print may have dominated all summer, but now zebra stripes are ruling the fashion kingdom. And not just black and white, either. Autumnal hues and khaki variations fit with this season’s Seventies vibes, while a dash of sporty stripes breaks up a monochrome base.

re you rejoicing because knitwear season is finally here? Us too. After that annoying in-between period when it’s too cold for T-shirts but too warm for woollies, now we can embrace winter fashion in all its glory. But that doesn’t just mean throwing on the same boring old jumpers. This season, take your knitwear up a notch with stylish silhouettes and catwalk-inspired prints. Here are four new trends to try now...

1. Coordinate your look Winter’s answer to double denim, woolly coords are a genius idea, because they’re as comfy as loungewear but still look classy. For a chic workwear look, team a jumper and skirt set with brown leather boots and accessories, or

2. Dress it up Loose, Eighties-style jumper dresses take a back seat for autumn as form-fitting knits take centre stage. In ribbed fabrics and dark hues, these clingy frocks are a far cry from frumpy jumpers. Add knee high boots to really amp up the sex appeal.

3. Play with proportions Another way to make a snuggly jumper feel modern is by opting for an on-trend silhouette and this season that means balloon sleeves. 88 NOVEMBER 2019

MORNING Vs EVENING WORKOUT

Does the early bird catch the gym gains, or are you better off running through your reps after the sun sets? We ask two personal trainers. There are two types of people in this world: There are those that are able to jump out of bed when the cock crows at 5.30am, throw on their trainers and get to a spin class before the sun’s even up. And then there are those that prefer to snooze the alarm, lay in bed and hit the weights room after dark. But which is actually better for your body? Are those freakishly energetic gym larks doing it right, or should we be taking notes from the post-work tribe?

90 NOVEMBER 2019

A

ccording to experts, there’s no perfect answer. “The truth is there are benefits to both, and there are physiological differences between exercising in the morning or the evening,” says Marvin Burton, head of fitness at Anytime Fitness UK (anytimefitness. co.uk). Biologically, he explains, our individual circadian rhythms dip and rise at different times in the day, which means our energy, alertness and mental focus fluctuate. Finding the time where your performance is at its peak for the type of exercise you like to do, is the key to sticking to a regular workout regimen. “Studies have shown that the average individual who goes to bed at 11pm and has a 9-5 desk job displays the biggest spike in their blood pressure at 6.45am, as this is when the sleep hormone melatonin begins to drop,” says Burton. When the body is exposed to natural daylight, the brain sends signals to produce the stress hormone cortisol too, which sets the body up for an early-morning energy boost. For this reason, mornings have become a popular time for spinning and HIIT classes, but if you’re not a natural early riser, Burton says activities such as steady state cardio walking, cycling or gentle forms of yoga, may actually be the best way to introduce your body to the day. There are other benefits to getting in a workout first-thing too. “Training in the morning means you can benefit from a wakeup call, not only for you, but your metabolism too. Exercising in the morning ensures your metabolism gets going and it will burn [calories] more efficiently for the rest of the day,” says Dave Mercer, a personal trainer at Nuffield Health (nuffieldhealth.com). That said, sleep is a really important factor to any workout, and if you haven’t had a sufficient night’s kip, it might be better to snooze the alarm and slot in a workout later in the day. “Morning workouts require getting a good night’s sleep, a nutritious dinner the night before and a longer warm up to get your body ready for

exercise,” says Mercer. “Sleep is vital for the body to repair and recover, and you need to get enough so your body is in a good state to exercise the next day.” Don’t discount the evening if you like to lift hard and heavy though. “If you’re into strength training, the evening would biologically be the best time to do this,” says Burton. “Exercising in the evening ensures you’re alert, you’ll have consumed enough calories and you’ll likely feel like you have more energy. “Be warned though, high-intensity training later in the evening, after 7pm, can negatively affect sleep - but a heavy lifting workout with plenty of rest and a lengthy cooldown period is a good alternative.” Bear in mind that you might also feel tired from your working day, so it’s important to listen to what your body is telling you. So, should you just do what feels right for you at the time then? “Yes. Unless you’re an aspiring athlete or have the luxury of not having to work, my opinion would be to choose the one which allows you to plan and execute your daily tasks easily,” says Burton. “Personally, I’m a big advocate for morning workouts. Arguably it’s a harder habit to implement, but you’ll get a sense of fulfilment and accomplishment which sets you up for a proactive day. “People who exercise in the morning often also benefit from feeling more alert, more productive and more energetic. The likelihood of something cropping up which would prevent you from exercising is lower too, so you’re probably more likely to stick to a training plan.” The bottom line? There’s no right answer. “Exercise is by no means a one-size-fits-all approach,” says Burton, “and I always stress that it’s personal for the individual.”

Small Can Be Beautiful I

f you are living with a small kitchen or bathroom, it doesn’t mean that you must be uncomfortable or short on style. Innovative planning and designing at the start of a project can maximise the rooms to create the illusion of space and provide more practical, liveable areas without compromising on essentials. For kitchens, a well-designed, practical layout will make the most of a small area. Whether you plan an “L” shaped, “U” shaped, or galley (single or double) design it is essential to give yourself enough free area to move around and comfortably open any drawers or doors. Practical details like the choice of handles needs careful thought; protruding handles can catch on clothing so think about handleless cabinets. Many manufacturers offer reduced depth and width designs so you could think about having narrower units on one side of the room to same on floor space but retain storage. A tall larder unit reaching all the way to the ceiling can achieve lots of room for dry goods and essentials. Be careful not to build units too close to windows, this will make the room feel smaller and darker. Basically, the lighter and simpler the units the better. Also, as in other rooms mirrors also work in kitchens to give the illusion of light and space. Think about a mirrored splashback behind your hob or sink or mirror panels on the walls opposite your windows. Bathrooms, historically known as “the smallest room in the house”. As average UK bathrooms are around 3 square metres, it is essential that no space is wasted in one of the hardest working areas. Pocket or folding doors can both save space but are not always thought of. Raising a window to fit a bath or basin underneath can utilize wall space. Many ranges of furniture and sanitary ware now

96 NOVEMBER 2019

“Mirrors also work in kitchens to give the illusion of light and space”

offer designs catering for compact spaces. Smaller sinks, shorter baths, compact shower cubicles and corner WC’s all mean you can fit more into your bathroom. Wall hung basins, WCs or cabinets, while not necessarily creating more space will give the illusion of a larger room. Mirrored cabinets over the basin gives storage as well as reflecting light to add to the illusion of space. Large tiles are a good choice for smaller rooms. There are less grout lines on show, so the floor and walls are less cluttered. Non slip, light gloss tiles give a light and open feel. To stop the eye breaking up the area, consider using the same tiles on the floor and walls, giving a cohesive, flowing space. If you are thinking of a new kitchen or bathroom, whatever the size, come and see us at Julian Graham Kitchens and Bathrooms. Our designers have many years’ experience between them with all sizes of rooms, and will be able to advise and recommend ideas to you. www.jgkab.co.uk

MELLOW YELLOW 3 ways to decorate with yellow at home

Z

esty, energising and robust, yellow is the versatile, happy-go-lucky colour that easily brightens up home décor. Go for bold this season by opting for a warm yellow shade that is in line with the deep, rich jewel tones that are trending for Autumn 2019. Take a cue from Rebecca Snowden, Interior Style Advisor atFurniture Choice, who shares 3 ways to decorate with yellow at home. Make a statement with a yellow and grey feature wall Take on this trend in the living room with bold colour blocked yellow and grey walls. While these two contrasting shades balance each other out, this is nonetheless a daring look that works best alongside strong modern pieces with clean, simple elements. When done right, yellow adds a sunny burst to the room while grey’s warm, neutral tone is a calming, sophisticated presence to the space. “A yellow and grey feature wall is a refreshing choice for the living room as it provides a healthy dose of colour in colder months,” Rebecca explains. “Opt for a light shade of grey such as dove grey as it will bring out the bright and airy qualities of yellow.” “Take the opportunity to also colour block in smalls doses, with yellow plant pots, vases, rugs and cushions. This ties the room together for a cohesive look.” Use pops of yellow in a home office to boost creativity For a more subtle approach that doesn’t entail painting the walls, look at incorporating pops of sunny yellow in other parts of the home such as the home office. As a colour that inspires creativity and represents optimism, the addition of yellow to the study may just help get the creative juices flowing. “Introducing bright yellow hues such as lemon

98 NOVEMBER 2019

or canary to your home office can easily be done without requiring a huge overhaul,” Rebecca says. “A simple wooden chair in yellow is an instant way to uplift a workspace with this cheerful, stimulating colour. The welcoming effect when paired with oak furniture can be further emphasised with other pops of yellow such as artwork and accessories that make the room feel more energised and dynamic.” Accent with trendy yellow tones in the dining room Yellow also works beautifully in the dining room, lending warmth and cheer to the heart of the home. Pick a deep yellow shade like mustard, honey or butterscotch; these darker yellow accents are set to be a major colour trend for Autumn 2019 and bring a fresh, vibrant twist to neutral palettes. “Small pops of yellow can really add personality and bring life to a dining space,” Rebecca explains. “Look for accessories like cups and plates in a rich, golden butterscotch yellow for a splash of colour, and fill a cheerful yellow vase with fresh flowers to create an inviting atmosphere.” www.furniturechoice.co.uk

TILE STYLE

Deco Tayberry is announced as Original Style’s Tile of the Year 2020

or the third consecutive year, Original Style is excited to reveal their Tile of the Year for 2020 in partnership with leading Interior Designers, 2LG Studio. Sophisticated, sumptuous and classic in design; Deco Tayberry, part of Original Style’s Winchester collection of hand crafted English tiles, is set to be the must-have tile for the upcoming year. “As interior designers, we approach our projects with one eye on the past and the other on the future. Deco Tayberry is the perfect representation of this motto. Square in format and with an arch motif, this gorgeous tile is a contemporary twist on classic tiling. Moving forward from the currently popular ‘millennial pink’, Tile of the Year’s blush and berry tones provide a softer approach, embracing the new heritage trend” Jordan Cluroe and Russell Whitehead, 2LG Studio. The real beauty of this tile is reflected in its handcrafted nature. Designed in-house at Original Style’s factory in Exeter, Devon; Deco Tayberry is the epitome of British design. Each tile is hand crafted by skilled artisans using the age-old screen printing method which, alongside its reactive inks, means each kiln produces a different effect, so no two tiles are the same. “Vibrancy through colour is beginning to play a big part in interior schemes. It’s exciting to see people being bolder with their interior choices and during 2020 we’re expecting to see people integrate more statement designs through greater injection of personality and individuality” – Jane Addis, Original Style’s New Products & Design Manager. “Deco Tayberry was designed with this movement in mind. Its heritage-pink glaze encourages the embrace of colour which, when

102 NOVEMBER 2019

paired with its Deco pattern inspired by the luxury and modernity of art-deco design; provides a dramatic yet sophisticated edge. Alongside its inherent rustic nature, these tiles are wonderfully characterful providing an authentic and distinctive style” comments Jane. Renowned for their colourful and audacious interior style, Interior designers, 2LG Studio collaborated with Original Style to create a bathroom space for 2020; “When we first saw Deco Tayberry it was clearly unique and we were thrilled to design a setting to best showcase this tile for Original Style. Combining traditional style with modern influences was our primary objective and we achieved this through emphasis on shape and texture. We embedded the Deco Tayberry tiles into an arch formation to accentuate the striking curves of the pattern, incorporating matte concrete walls and accessories to contrast with and enhance the tiles rich glossy glaze. On this occasion, we styled Deco Tayberry in a bathroom but the versatility of this tile lends itself beautifully to a feature chimney breast, a kitchen splashback or even installed within a sitting room alcove” - Jordan Cluroe and Russell Whitehead, 2LG Studio. Through the combination of age-old production methods and contemporary style influences, this captivating tile isn’t just aesthetically pleasing but it also evokes personality and charm. With homeowners now branching out with their own design styles, the vision for 2020 is the embrace of heritage design, colour and individuality and Deco Tayberry is the perfect reflection of this interior design movement. www.originalstyle.com

renwith is a fictional Cornish Estate that Rebecca and Alison the cofounders of Cream, have created to form the basis for future collections which will involve life living in an idyllic Cornish manor house overlooking a sheltered creek. The Trenwith’s, Niall and Loveday, their children and pets will provide inspiration for future collections through their ancestor’s adventures and the estates history. “You will find Trenwith at the end of a long driveway, filled either side with hydrangeas, camellias and rhododendrons, sitting above sloping lawns leading down to Trelonk, a sheltered creek at the top of the Helford river, only accessible to all but the smallest keeled boats at low tide. A large walled garden sits behind the Elizabethan house, with a gate, dating back to the 16th century, which leads to an orchard filled with fruit trees. There is an ice house, no longer used now of course and the pineapple house has been given over to growing herbs. The beehives are one of Lovedays latest projects and the honey is sold under the estates label, which now has a large range of products including Cornish tea. Much to their surprise, it’s

been very popular in China and Niall has been busy working out how to export a Cornish cream tea to accompany it.” The design duo explain the inspiration behind the beautiful new country range: Alison: “Cream Cornwall is the essence of country and coastal living and Trenwith is perfect for both. We took ages sampling the six colours, until we felt that there was the perfect colour choice for anyone, whether they lived by the sea or the depths of the Cornish countryside.” Rebecca: “Trenwith epitomises the Cornish countryside, especially in the Autumn when I often have to brake for fear of running over a pheasant in the road. The flowers, insects and creatures that feature in this collection which typifies everything we love about Cornish country life” The range has lampshades, cushions, table linen and tableware, tea towels and aprons and even a paint range called Trenwith which has six colours to choose from with names conjuring up life in this idyllic setting. LIGHTING

Established in 1990 by Peter Bowles, Original BTC began life as an Oxford based home lighting brand and has secured two further lighting brands; heritage marine lighting manufacturer Davey Lighting and LED lighting manufacturer Beadlight, under its umbrella. Exports account for 50% of the production, supplying both the retail and contract markets around the world with an emphasis on the hotel, restaurant and aeronautical industries. With a family history steeped in retail, manufacturing and design, Peter designs the company’s products in conjunction with his son Charlie who became Director in 2012.

O

riginal BTC, Davey Lighting & Beadlight each offer a diverse and unique range of lighting designs. All brands draw inspiration from Britain’s rich post industrialisation history as well as incorporating modern tastes and trends with our very latest innovative designs. Quality, detail and an interesting mix of materials are integral to each brand’s designs. These are created by using the best quality raw materials to their upmost capability, paying great attention to the concept and form. From using centuries old techniques to the very latest technology, all lights are handmade and manufactured in the UK. Six production facilities include a metalworks, glassworks, and a Stoke-on-Trent bone china factory rescued from closure in 2002. It is here where the lighting designs, whether crafted from versatile bone china, the finest aluminium, copper, brass and iron, come to life. The detailing of cotton braided cables, satin chromed bases & contrasting coloured shades make Original BTC, Davey Lighting and Beadlight’s products uniquely distinctive and popular in Europe and beyond. “When it comes to scale, dramatically

proportioned lights are the most obvious way to create impact. A generously sized pendant will create a talking point, whether lit or not. While scale is one way to make statement, it’s not always feasible to fit a grandly proportioned pendant in lower ceilinged rooms, so it’s worth exploring alternative approaches with your lighting scheme. Introducing colour via your light fittings is a sure-fire way of creating interest. It’s also particularly effective in contemporary kitchens and bathrooms where rows of shiny cabinets can look a little austere. Often referred to as jewellery for the home, the right light fittings can complete or transform your interior scheme. Just like jewellery, a flash of brass, copper or gold can lift your room, bringing a touch of opulence”, explains Peter Bowles, founder/MD, Original BTC. “Three is the magic number when it comes to multiple light fittings. Over a kitchen island or over a dining table – a row of three pendants will always create a strong visual impact. If you’re looking for a central lighting source, you can push the boat out even further with a grouping. Hung from a single ceiling rose, they do all the hard work for you,” concludes Peter. www.originalbtc.com

Impressed with the exceptional quality, the Wrought Iron and Brass Bed Company was born. Hand crafted within their own workshop, on the Royal Sandringham Estate. Their range of iron wrought iron and brass beds, are constructed using traditional techniques and finished with authentic brass finishing’s. ANIMAL MAGIC

Don’t wake the tiger! Scare off intruders and keep your home muck-free with the WILD Tiger Doormat. A fun little addition to your entryway, the Tiger Doormat features a design inspired by traditional tiger hides. Luckily for us, no tigers were harmed in the making of the fantastic doormat. The mat has all the things you’d expect to find on a Tiger, stripes included. With an intricate cut out design, the Tiger Doormat features a face, 4 legs and even a tail. An especially perfect gift for animallovers and style-lovers alike, the mat is a great way to keep the place tidy. Made from all-natural coir, especially hardwearing. www.redcandy.co.uk

STATEMENT PIECE

Scaramanga was pleased to find this pair of wonderfully ornate blue wooden doors and frame from a salvage yard in Jodhpur, Rajasthan (in NW India) during a recent shopping trip. We are now offering the doors as a great statement architectural piece for a building project. www.scaramangashop.co.uk
