Fundraisers at The South Bucks Community Hospice are hoping that party fever will sweep Bucks after the huge success of a music night inspired by rock legend Ozzy Osbourne.
O
zzy’s donation of a signed guitar from his home collection set the ball rolling for a concert to be arranged recently at Pipers Corner School in Great
Kingshill. The concert, organised by the school’s guitar teacher Mark Campbell, raised around £2,000 for patients with life-limiting illnesses - with £1,000 of this coming from the auction of the star’s LAG Tramontane. Now, the hospice is now calling on all sections of the community to follow this up by holding their own fun events – big or small - on the theme of its ‘House Party’ fundraising drive. “A House Party can be any type of event really from a dinner party at home to a disco at school or an evening of knitting with tea and biscuits,” said Senior Fundraising Manager Becca Braithwaite. “The key is enjoyment while raising vital funds, however small or large, for people who really need it. “We began this initiative at the start of November and the event at Pipers Corner really demonstrates the message that we want to send out – just choose something that you love to do, or even something you’d already planned to do and you can turn anything into a fundraising House Party.” Becca added: “Of course, not everyone has an Ozzy Osbourne guitar to auction off, but there are all sorts of other events that can be organised in aid of the House Party campaign. Remember, it doesn’t matter how much you raise – we just want you to enjoy yourselves in the name of a really good

cause.” The Pipers Corner concert featured several bands from the school. Scores of people flocked to the event and applauded wildly as Ozzy’s guitar was auctioned off amid a frenzied round of bidding. It was eventually won by a bid from an Ozzy Osbourne fan who asked to remain anonymous. Concert organiser Mark Campbell, whose terminally-ill father Ian has been treated by the hospice at Butterfly House, High Wycombe, said: “The winner of the auction told me at the start he wasn’t going home without the guitar because he is a big Ozzy fan. Bidding began at £100 and even my father put in an offer, but I was thrilled when it reached £1,000.” Shortly before the concert, Mark and the hospice had received a huge boost when they were sent a message from Ozzy Osbourne, who said: “I’m delighted to be helping raise much-needed funds for The South Bucks Community Hospice through the auction of one of my guitars from my home studio.” House Parties for the hospice can be held anywhere and the charity will provide organisers with support and a pack. Some things to consider when going through a divorce or separation
Going through a divorce or any kind of separation is challenging and emotional for all concerned. It can also be extremely timeconsuming and costly if those involved fail to agree on a suitable settlement. When embarking on the process, there are lots of details that need to be sorted out. However, to make the process less daunting we have outlined some of the most important things you should consider from the outset.

• Make sure you prioritise any children If children are involved, their interests should always come first and you should not agree to anything that compromises this. It is often the children who can be the worst affected by parents separating because they struggle to understand why their parents are no longer living together. It’s important to keep things as normal as possible for them so you should look to put a parenting plan in place that suits all parties. It is always advisable to try and reach an early agreement with the other party as, although the Court can be involved to determine where the children will live and the amount of time they see either parent; this is a lengthy and costly process. It will therefore save all concerned a lot of stress, upset, costs and time if matters can be agreed directly between the parties and the formal involvement of the Court can be avoided. • Finances Just as with the arrangements for the children, reaching an early agreement is best for all parties. If children are involved, the Court will always try to find a solution that provides for their needs to be met in the first instance and consideration should always be given to this fact. Make sure you are clear as to what assets are available to be distributed and then think about what you can afford, what you need to support yourself after you have separated and then enter into negotiations to see if you can reach an
agreement with your ex-partner. If an agreement can be reached then a document can be drawn up to ensure that the financial aspects of your separation are properly recorded and formalised. • How will you deal with any anger and resentment you may feel and will you make the correct decisions? The breakdown of any relationship is a stressful time for both parties; feelings of anger and sadness are all a natural part of the process. However, it is important to ensure that you do not let these emotions cloud your judgment. It is vital that you think carefully about the decisions you make as these can have long reaching repercussions in the future but, as a general rule, you should always try to keep a clear head and stay calm. Cliveden
A country retreat on a grand scale, Cliveden’s magnificent gardens and breath-taking views have been admired for centuries.

liveden was the glittering hub of society; visited by virtually every British Monarch since George I and home to Waldorf and Nancy Astor in the early 20th century. A
s we move into autumn there is a chill in the air and the nights are drawing in so why not celebrate the most popular of British Game Birds. The pheasant season runs from 1st October to 1st January. Here
I have paired the assertive flavour of the pheasant with the earthiness of wild mushrooms, at their best right now, and finish with the aromatic butter adds a layer of freshness. The candied chestnuts will add a slight sweetness and a wintery crunch.
RECIPE: Ravioli of pheasant with wild mushrooms, chestnut and sage beurre noisette
Serves 4
Ingredients Pasta • 275 g pasta flour • 6 egg yolks • 4 whole free range eggs • 1 tblsp olive oil • 1 tblsp Maldon salt
Ravioli Filling • 2 pheasant breast skinned and boned • 1 shallot • 100 ml double cream to blend • 150 g wild mushrooms • 50 g candied chestnuts diced • 1 bunch sage – chopped • 75 g butter salted • Salt and freshly ground pepper
Method Pasta Dough 1. Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl 2. Turn out onto a floured surface 3. Knead by hand for 10 minutes 4. Rest the dough for 30 minutes in the refrigerator 5. Divide the pasta dough into four. Run the pasta through the machine in sections until desired thickness achieved Ravioli Filling 1. Puree the pheasant breast with the cream in a food processor 2. Sauté the fine diced shallots, garlic and wild mushrooms and diced chestnuts. 3. Leave to cool 4. Pass the pheasant mix through a fine sieve to remove any sinew 5. Fold in the mushrooms mix with the pheasant and season. Ravioli 1. Roll out the sheets of pasta 2. Place a spoonful of the pheasant mixture down the middle of your sheet 3. Then brush around each spoonful with beaten egg 4. Then roll out another sheet of the pasta and place on top 5. Gently cup around with your hands to form individual portions 6. Then using 3 ascending size round cutters place the smallest and the next size up inside of each other

and press upside down on to the pasta portions this will form a neat little edge to the ravioli 7. Then with the largest cutter put the right way up and use to cut out the rounds to finish 8. Place onto a floured tray 9. Rest the ravioli in a refrigerator for 30 minutes To serve 1. Cook the ravioli in boiling salted water with a splash of olive oil for around 4 minutes 2. Remove with a slotted spoon – plate up into a large white bowl 3. Meanwhile in a hot pan add your diced salted butter 4. Wait until it foams and colours nut brown 5. Add the chopped sage 6. Spoon a little of the beurre noisette over the ravioli to finish and serve

HOSPICE RUNNING GROUP RACES TO SUCCESS
F
ive years ago, Berkhamsted solicitor Paul Owen first opened his car boot and invited local runners to throw money in. This was the start of the unique Hospice of St Francis Running Club which has now raised almost £20,000 and attracted over 200 locals to turn up and run! As 50 year-old Paul explains, “Sadly from personal experience I know what great work the Hospice movement does and had run loads of races to raise funds but wanted to think of a fresh approach.” The result was a weekly training session where Paul, a qualified athletics coach who is about to complete his 100th marathon, encourages local runners of all abilities to take part in an hour of fitness in return for a donation. Sessions take part on a Wednesday morning all over the Berkhamsted area including Ashridge Forest, Northchurch Common and along the Grand Union canal. One of the many regulars is Eleonor Keohane. Her husband spent his final weeks in the Hospice in 2015 aged just 52 years, “I’m not the fastest runner but knowing I’m raising money is a

great motivation to get out there on a Wednesday morning even when it’s freezing!” she said. From the outset, interest was so great that two years ago Paul asked local coaches, Erica Carter and Heather Harris to start up a separate Hospice Running Group for total beginners. “Over 200 men and women aged from 17 years to 70 years have now completed our 0-5k course and added another £ 7,000 to the fund raising total,” Erica said adding that each ten week course ends with a Park Run, “Which is always an emotional day as we see everyone reach what many had previously thought was an impossible goal.” One of the first to sign up was Louise Bednall, “I had always wanted to run but needed the incentive to get going. I knew I wouldn’t do it on my own and was always too intimidated to join a Running Club until I heard about this course.” She completed the Aylesbury Park Run in 36 minutes and was delighted, “The first week we all ran 90 seconds and thought that was hard! We just built it up each week and it was actually really fun! Everyone was so supportive that we are now going to carry on running together.” Speaking about the Club Carolyn Addison, Corporate Fundraising Manager, at The Hospice of St Francis, said, “The Hospice Running club is such a clever idea to combine fitness and fundraising and it is testament to Paul’s enthusiasm for both the Hospice and running that is seeing it growing in popularity”. The plan is that others will be inspired and similar Hospice Running Clubs will be launched around the country.

ike many of you, I watched the dramatic twists and turns of Doctor Foster on the BBC recently and from the perspective of a family lawyer I am sad to report that I was not shocked to observe the results of the ugly sides of divorce and separation. Lizzie and Marie, nicknamed the ‘Christmas sisters’ by Radio 4, took over the reins of their family business ten years ago and diversified it to include a café and farm shop. he Rotary Clubs of Marlow today announce that the 13th Santa’s Fun Run will take place on Sunday December 3rd starting at 9.30 am. They again promise a sea of red running through the streets of Marlow. As always this 5 kilometre run appeals to a wide range of participants – some serious but mostly not - and in doing so raises serious money for good causes. Participating Santas can raise money for their own personal charities – or they can raise it for Rotary. In 2016 around £35,000 was distributed to mainly local charities and other deserving causes, with a target of £40,000 this year. There will be two lead charities for the 2017 event – Scannappeal and Compassionate Friends. Scannappeal is of course a very well-known local charity, and most of us at the very least know of someone who will have benefited from this great cause. Compassionate Friends (also called Alliance of Hope) provides support for those who have lost someone through suicide, and more details of this much respected charity can be found on www. allianceofhope.org. Additionally, a host of other mainly local - charities benefit every year from this great event. The Rotary Clubs of Marlow are also delighted to confirm that Sytner BMW High Wycombe are the lead sponsors for the third year running The entry website will open for entries on September 1st, and potential participants should sign up quickly and then start raising sponsorship funds as early as possible. Those interested will need to book early to avoid disappointment (last year Rotary had to close to entries well before the event date). Two new virtual reality experiences have made their debut at The View from the Shard - on their open-air Skydeck on the 72nd floor of the tallest building in Western Europe! Visitors can test their nerves up to 800ft above the city on ‘The Slide’ an adrenaline-fuelled 360-degree virtual reality experience. Guests ‘slide’ around its peak on a simulated helter skelter at speeds of 100mph along imaginary open-air tubes that corkscrew around the skyscraper – all via a curved platform which moves around beneath them during the two-minute ride. The second ‘Vertigo’ allows visitors to really face their fear of heights! This virtual adventure sees the building fall away, leaving you suspended in the air, walking across The Shard’s early infrastructure and balancing on scaffolding of the stripped back construction of Western Europe’s tallest building. Romeo the fox - The View from The Shard’s mascot that represents the intrepid real fox who was discovered on level 72 during construction of the building - also makes an appearance as guests take instructions from the construction sites foreman. Both exhilarating experiences heighten the sensation by blowing fresh air at the guest during their session. LONDON’S TOP FIVE MUSEUMS

ong gone are the days when we were reluctantly dragged to museums by our parents or teachers. Now, many of us eagerly await new exhibitions, and the result of this year’s TripAdvisor’s Travellers’ Choice Awards (released today) show just how popular these institutions have become. Chosen by members of the public, five spots in London have made it into the top 25 list of best-rated museums in Europe - more than any other European city - and most of them are free to enter. If you’ve not been to them before, now might be the time to find out what you’re missing. Victoria & Albert Museum (Nearest tube: South Kensington) Coming first in the UK is no small achievement: the V&A has overtaken last year’s UK winner, the British Museum, and has pushed the likes of Paris’ Musee du Louvre and Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum aside. The V&A’s free to view collection is devoted to art and design, with objects ranging from Art Deco furniture to paintings by John Constable and JMW Turner. It’s the museum’s temporary exhibitions (which do require an entry ticket) that you really need to keep an eye on. In recent years shows dedicated to the likes of fashion designer Alexander McQueen and music icon David Bowie have been hugely successful. National Gallery (Nearest tube: Charing Cross) Walking through the National Gallery is a veritable who’s who of art history, with everyone from Botticelli to Titian, Van Gogh and Monet making an appearance. Ever heard of a little painting called Sunflowers by Vincent Van Gogh? It’s just one of the many masterpieces on display as part of the permanent exhibition - open free to the public. Once you’ve done admiring the artwork, pop into the elegant National Dining Rooms for a bite to eat. It was designed by world famous architect David Collins, who also designed the celeb-magnet bar at Mayfair hotel Claridge’s, and has window views

spilling onto Trafalgar Square. British Museum (Nearest tube: Holborn) Speaking of impressive buildings, the British Museum can definitely be counted among some of the most incredible structures in London. The previous two museums on the list are largely dedicated to art, but in the British Museum it’s all about history. Don’t be fooled by the name, because there are artefacts from all over the world. Set aside several hours to learn about the ancient Egyptians or the Bronze Age in Europe. Remarkably, the museum is free - although tickets are required for temporary exhibitions. Natural History Museum (Nearest tube: South Kensington) If you haven’t visited the Natural History Museum since you were a child, now is the perfect time to go. Dippy - the giant dinosaur who filled up the main room of the building - has now been replaced by Hope, the 25.2-metre-long blue whale skeleton who hangs from the ceiling. It’s free to view the mind boggling collection of animals, fossils and skeletons so expect long entry queues at weekends. The annual Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition is also held here, although ticket prices apply. It’s worth combining with a trip to the neighbouring V&A both are on Exhibition Road in South Kensington. Churchill War Rooms (Nearest tube: Westminster) Located in a secret underground bunker from World War Two, the Churchill War Rooms are the best place to learn about the former British Prime Minister’s life. It was in this confined space beneath Westminster that Churchill and his senior ministers mapped out the Allied victory. Many items of memorabilia have been placed just as they would have been all those years ago. This is the only museum in the top five which doesn’t have free admission. Expect to pay £19 for adults and £9.50 for children.

,000 runners have already secured their spot in the very first half marathon to go through both the City of London and Westminster. The London Landmarks Half Marathon is a brand new, closed road charity run taking place for the first time on 25 March 2018. Public entry to the London landmarks Half Marathon has now sold out, but the aim is to raise £4 million between Tommy’s and 100 participating charities who will take the other 5,000 spots. Many charities still have space available including Tommy’s, Alzheimer’s Research UK, Cancer Research UK, Mind, Macmillan Cancer Support, Prostate Cancer UK and Make-A-Wish. In total 10,000 runners will start on Pall Mall, finish by Downing Street and have fabulous views of London’s most iconic landmarks including Big Ben, St Paul’s Cathedral, Nelson’s Column, the Gherkin, the Shard, the Tower of London and the London Eye. The event is not your average half marathon, as it will celebrate London’s ‘quirky and hidden’ history, giving participants the chance to explore the capital while running a route like no other. For example, runners will experience a ‘bowler hat send-off ’ in true London style as the race starts by the world’s oldest hat shop Lock & Co, where the bowler hat originated from in 1849. The event is the brainchild of baby charity Tommy’s, who have spent two and a half years developing the event to benefit the entire charity sector. With their offices based in the heart of the City, Tommy’s noticed a gap in the market, realising a central London half marathon taking in the City and all of the Capital’s landmarks did not exist. Tommy’s therefore took the decision to pursue developing and launching a new central London half marathon to benefit both themselves, and many other charities too. Tommy’s is delighted to be launching this exciting new event with the support of Westminster City Council and the City of London Corporation. Just Giving are the official fundraising partner and the event will be delivered on the day by Human Race. hat’s the appeal from The South Bucks Community Hospice which is making ‘House Party’ its major fundraising drive for November. The charity formally launched the initiative on Saturday at a ‘vibrant’ community open day attended by more than 100 people at its new home, Butterfly House in High Wycombe. A mixture of local residents, patients and patients’ families flocked to the event, and were given guided tours around the new beautifully appointed building in Totteridge, High Wycombe. In line with the launch of the House Party campaign, the open day was party-themed, so attendees enjoyed face painting, games and party food. The hospice is motivating that the whole South Bucks community will rally around during November to make it a fun month of fundraising to remember. Individual fundraising stories will be posted on the charity’s website, and ‘House Party heroes’ will be recognised with publicity if they wish for it. Residents, schools, clubs and businesses are being urged to hold fun events in their own homes or offices to celebrate the fact that the hospice has

just moved to its new home. Parties can be held anywhere and the hospice will provide organisers with a support pack. “A House Party can be any type of event really from a dinner party at home to a disco at school or an evening of knitting with tea and biscuits,” said Senior Fundraising Manager Becca Braithwaite. “The key is enjoyment while raising vital funds, however, small or large, for people who really need it.” Becca added: “Saturday’s open day was a truly vibrant event and there was a great atmosphere. MOVEMBER MAN TALK COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE
M
ake time for man talk! That’s the advice being given to men as part of the national Movember campaign – the month that spotlights men’s
health issues. A Movember survey showed that while 70% of men say their friends could rely on them for support, only 48% say that they would rely on their friends! In other words men are happy to listen to other people’s problems but not so happy to talk about their own. Two of the biggest ‘men only’ killers are prostate and testicular cancer but both are very treatable if diagnosed early. Mr Jacques Roux a Consultant Urologist at Spire Harpenden Hospital said: “The key to successful treatment is down to men facing up to the fact that they might have a problem and seeking medical help as soon as possible. “It is well known that men tend to keep things bottled up when it comes to medical issues but that really is the worst thing they can do. Growing a moustache in support of Movember is great but it’s when the talking starts that we know we are getting somewhere.” Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer in men with over 41,000 new cases diagnosed in the UK every year, claiming approximately 10,500 lives while around 2,300

cases of testicular cancer are diagnosed annually. Men over 50 years of age are most likely to develop prostate cancer whereas it is men aged from 25 to 49 who are most at risk from testicular cancer. Mr Roux added: “Early prostate cancer may have no symptoms so don’t wait for them to appear. If you are 50 years old you should be getting yourself checked. That age drops to 45 if you are black or have a father or brother who has had prostate cancer. “It’s a simple examination that could be followed by a blood test - there is no need to be frightened or embarrassed.” Prostate Cancer UK figures show that one in four black men will get prostate cancer at some point in their lives whereas the number of other men is one in eight. Symptoms for testicular cancer include swelling or a lump in a testicle, which is usually painless but can become painful as it increases in size or a dull ache or pain, or heaviness in the scrotum. “Once again men seem to find it difficult to discuss this with others but swift action really can save lives. Don’t wait until it becomes painful, act as soon as you discover a lump, it really can mean the difference between successful and nonsuccessful treatment,” said Mr Roux. www.spireharpenden.com

Baby, Buggy, and PND (Post-Natal Depression) F
rom the moment you get pregnant; one often hears, “It’ll be wonderful,” “You’ll feel an instant connection,” “It’ll complete you.” Some of these people may have completely forgotten about the constant wake up calls, dirty nappies, reflux, oh and lets not forget what I like to call, “mummy cabin fever. “ Having a baby is supposed to be a wonderful life changing experience. However, it does not always feel so wonderful for every mum. NHS UK on their website described, Postnatal Depression (PND) as a type of depression that takes place after the birth of a child. It usually takes place within the first year. It affects 1 in 10 mums and often goes under reported. It can happen during any one of your pregnancies. According to NHS, Symptoms of PND are: • Persistent feelings of sadness and low mood • Lack of enjoyment and loss of interest in the wider world. • Lack of energy and feeling tired all the time. • Trouble sleeping at night and feeling sleepy during the day. • Difficulty bonding with your baby. • Withdrawing from contact with other people. • Problems concentrating and making decisions. • Frightening thoughts- for example about hurting your baby. Many women feel they are failing as a mother if they are depressed. They find it difficult to share their journey, as they fear others may judge them or judgment by their partner. Becoming a mother for the first time or the 5th time causes a great amount of biological changes in the body. Each pregnancy is different, but more importantly our life and situations around each pregnancy may also be different, which may effect our feelings and thoughts. Some women may not have the adequate support they need, therefore, causing more internal stress and coping difficulties. Other mothers may have hormonal or chemical imbalances, which impact the chemistry

of their brain and increases the depressive thoughts. If you combine all this with a crying baby who won’t settle for hours, you often have a formula for depressive thoughts, which can lead to negative self talk and suicidal ideation. Therefore, women need to get out and speak to each other. They need to tell each other the truth about pregnancy and what happens after. Its okay to feel sad, its okay that you cannot settle your baby, your house is not clean, your sexual life is slacking and your body looks like its been to war and back. Listen to me when I say, “its okay!!” You aren’t alone. There is an army of women also who feel this way. It is important to find time for yourself and get the help you need. Airplanes always make announcements to put the mask on your face before your children. So help yourself first. Speak to your GP, go to support groups, call a psychologist to engage in talk therapy, or a friend. A healthy mummy is always a happy mummy. Create you safe place for yourself. DIABETES FOCUS Diabetes is one of the fastest growing diseases in the country. There are currently four million people diagnosed with diabetes in the UK and this number is rising. There are some major differences between type 1 and type 2 diabetes so this month to coincide with World Diabetes day on the 14th of November, we ask Dr Mathi Woodhouse, GP with an interest in diabetes at Your Doctor, some questions to understand diabetes better.
Q: What is the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes? A: Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition and accounts for 5-10% of all people diagnosed with diabetes. The body’s immune system attacks the pancreas and destroys the cells that produce insulin. The average age of onset is 12 years and the condition is not preventable sadly. This means the pancreas makes little or no insulin. People with type 1 diabetes must take daily insulin long term. Patients with type 2 account for 90-95% off all diabetes diagnoses. In type 2 diabetes the body’s ability to respond to insulin slowly diminishes. This is known as insulin resistance. It means that your insulin hormones become less effective at storing and dealing with elevated blood sugar levels. This is particularly relevant if you consume large amounts of refined carbohydrates or sugary food and drinks or are overweight. There is also a genetic component to type 2 diabetes. There is a higher prevalence of type 2 diabetes in South Asian and Afro Caribbean communities. Overall, type 2 diabetes is preventable in a significant proportion of people. It is believed that up to a further one million people remain undiagnosed. Q: What are the symptoms of type diabetes? A: There are many common symptoms of diabetes including frequent passage of urine, increased thirst, feeling more tired than usual, unexplained weight loss, recurrent thrush or skin infections, cuts and wounds taking longer to heal, pins and needles or burning in the feet and blurred vision. If you feel you have any of these symptoms you should consult your GP for further investigations. Q: How can I protect myself from type 2 diabetes? A: Exercising regularly and a good balanced diet are key to maintaining good health. Keeping your weight within the ideal range and in particular minimising

fat around the waist have been shown to significantly reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Exercise helps prevent type 2 diabetes as it mops up excess glucose in your blood stream and helps the body respond better to insulin (the sugar hormone). It also aids weight management. Eating a healthy diet including your 5-a-day, alongside healthy sources of fat such as unsalted tree nuts (walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts), olive oil, avocado, oily fish can help protect you from developing diabetes. It goes without saying we should stop smoking and minimise alcohol consumption. A good way to assess your risk is it visit www.riskscore.diabetes.org.uk. This gives you a general idea of your risk as it stands today. Q: Does diabetes increase your risk of other diseases? A: The major problem of living with diabetes is managing its vast array of complications. Diabetes significantly increases your risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney and eyes problems including blindness. Some people with poorly controlled diabetes have problems with their skin and wounds heal very poorly. This can lead to more complex issues if not well managed. Diabetes alone accounts of 10% of the NHS budget and 80% of this is spent managing its many complications. Q: Can exercising protect you from type 2 diabetes? A: Regular and consistent aerobic exercise can assist in preventing type 2 diabetes by up to 40%. Working your muscles more often improves their ability to use insulin and absorb glucose. This puts less stress on your pancreas. Exercise also has the added benefit of strengthening your bones, managing weight, improving sleep, reducing stress levels and improving depression. Home Owners Need to be Wary of “Quick-Fit Fitters”
S
ometimes UK homeowners expectations of delivery for bespoke replacement double glazed windows and/or replacement doors are not very realistic, as some don’t appreciate how much work is involved. Put simply, tailor made windows and doors are just that, made to measure products in terms of design, colour and size. Fenestration products not designed, measured, fabricated or installed correctly can lead to unwanted long term aggravation & disappointment for property owners. To highlight this, if a double glazing supplier has a surveyor, fabricator and/or fitters sitting round waiting on your order, it would be sensible to ask why? There are lots of really decent double glazing installers in the UK, many of whom work primarily on recommendation. These sorts of firms are likely to be booked up many weeks in advance, because as a general rule customers would rather wait and have their replacement windows or doors measured right, manufactured right and installed properly, than have all the hassle caused when one or more of these operations is rushed to the detriment of a decent job. It is better to have really good quality, well-

made windows and doors which are fitted a couple of weeks late, rather than to have them poorly designed, and/or made defectively and/or fitted in too much of a hurry. It is easy to understand why customers are tempted to rush things along wanting their project completed as fast as possible, or customers who get pressurized by their builder or developer to buy windows and doors from a firm that their builder “recommends” that will deliver the products when the builder wants. Builders are notorious for wanting to fit new windows and doors as quickly as possible so they can move on to their next building project! Builders can therefore be keen to suggest buying windows and door products where they can get them fast, and not necessary the products that will be the best investment for the property owner, who is after all the customer, so should be the person specifying which windows and doors they require, and fitted by whom they trust to do a good job that will leave them with well installed products. To assist householders and give them greater peace of mind when appointing an installation company, consumer champions Which? established

To undertake a replacement window project properly, a professional surveyor should take careful accurate measurements (so they end up fitting properly), then raw materials have to be ordered (any coloured products are likely to be on a longer lead time) along with sealed units from the glass suppliers to ensure these will fit into the frames that are being specially made. Next, the products then need to be scheduled for production, as most double glazing manufacturers will not have skilled workers standing round. Once the products have been fabricated the installations department will need to confirm up the provisional date they will have hopefully pencilled in with you when you placed your order. Understanding the above process for bespoke fenestration products should set off alarm bells if a double glazing installer says they can supply and fit within a few weeks. Ask yourself, why have they not got a waiting list? It is wise to be wary of any double glazing company “promising” a quick
delivery in order to get you to sign up with them, as the last thing you want is to regret handing over a large deposit to the wrong company for the sake of a few weeks wait. So beware the quick fit window or door fitter! The danger of paying over a deposit is that once a customer has paid a supplier, they are then really stuck with that supplier (unless prepared to lose the deposit) however long that supplier then takes to supply and fit the products. Before ordering from any double glazing company, ensure a) you’ve done enough research so you can be confident your chosen partner will still be around in 10 years’ time!, b) you’ve read recent satisfactory customer reviews, c) you’ve seen the products first hand they will be supplying so you know for certain what to expect, and d) that they are Which Trusted Traders. uying a new settee can be stressful. Three experts share their top tips and trends to plump for. Over the course of a sofa’s life (which lasts, on average, 11 years) it will witness 1,236 arguments, 2,105 kissing couples, 3,135 films watched by families, and overhear 2,631 phone conversations, according to new research for Furniture Village. So, it’s all the more important then, to choose a sofa that doesn’t just look good and fit in, but can withstand all that activity and emotion. Experts reveal their buying secrets to help you choose the best seat in the house...
‘Green and orange are the hottest sofa colours right now’ “We’re always keeping abreast of trends and this year, in Italy, at Salone del Mobile - which showcases the latest in furniture and design from around the world - we saw two colours dominate - burnt orange 102 NOVEMBER 2017
and forest green,” says Alison Hill, creative director at DFS. Forest green reflects our desire to bring the ‘outside in’ and orange is a complementary colour to green. Curved-back ‘cocooning’ furniture is increasingly popular, too. We’ve really seen craftsmanship trending in recent years - highlighted in detail on upholstery and frames. Raising furniture forms on plinths - another popular look - provides a sense of continuous space in a room, and is an advantage if you’re constrained for space. All cushions are not created equal - some people like a firm and supportive feel, while others want something soft and squishy to sink into.
