Milton Keynes Spring Foraging Courses The course starts with a short introduction on what to look for and a brief of the general countryside codes. We’ll set off on a roughly 2.5 hour walk around the park teaching you how to identify the different Spring shoots, plants and mushrooms that we find. The Five Arrows at Waddesdon
n arrival at The Five Arrows, we were bowled over by the pretty setting. The welcoming open door led into the contemporary bar, tastefully decorated in warm, rustic colours. Eclectic seating gave the bar area a really comfortable feeling, light and airy yet cosy with faux fur throws on some of the chairs. Following a drink in the bar we were seated – and boy where we in for a surprise. The waitress took us to ‘table one’, on the other side of the restaurant to the bar. We were shown towards a door which led to the most beautiful little room with a rustic wooden farmhouse table , floor to ceiling windows showing off the wrought iron gates directly outside. With lots of “wow” and “this is amazing” we were seated. The table would comfortably seat 6 and we were spoiled having it just to ourselves. Our waiter for the night was Bela, and he was full of character and charm. He knew the menu inside out, and although we thought we had chosen our food, once we started talking to him we totally changed, and actually, were really glad that we took his advice. For starters we had the crispy lamb belly and a pork nugget. He explained in detail how the

lamb was layered carefully to create the illusion of one piece – it really was delicious. For mains, we were hovering between the fish pie (which Bale explained would be totally created and cooked in the kitchen from all fresh and raw ingredients), the cod loin and the steak. Then Bela introduced us to the idea of ‘faithfully fed roast chicken to share’. I laughed, saying that I have roast chicken at home most weeks, I really should go for something different. Again, Bale’s knowledge of the dish bought everything to life. It is a dish for two and by the time he had finished we both changed our minds and had the roast chicken. Served as a whole chicken breast on a bed of cabbage and bacon the size of the portion was phenomenal. I had to question it was chicken not turkey – Bela assured us it was chicken. He explained how the chef uses the meat and juices from the bird to create a sauce, a gravy you might think, yet so rich and flavoursome it is unlike any gravy I have ever had before. It came with a small serving of the sauce, I immediately asked for more as I know how much I love gravy on a roast dinner. I was bought a second portion however; I really did not need it. So rich and full of flavour they really had the portion size right. We were treated to some lemon caramac bites for ‘pre-desserts’ (must try these!) and finally for dessert, the cheeseboard and rhubarb and custard Bakewell. With wine matched to the food, again by the knowledgeable Bale, we had the most perfect dining experience. enley Festival, the UK’s most glamorous intimate festival, and winner of Headline Performance of the Year in 2016 returns to its spectacular setting on the riverbank in Henley-on-Thames from 10th14th July 2019. As the UK’s only black-tie festival, Henley Festival is glamour personified, offering Michelin starred food, award winning comedians, critically acclaimed artists and the biggest names in popular, world, jazz and classical music. Many festival goers arrive by boat, and the green lawns of the festival are transformed into a Great Gatsby vision, as black tie clad revellers spill across the festival site, champagne in hand, while fireworks explode overhead. Established 37 years ago as a classical music charity event, Henley Festival continues to be run on a not for profit basis supporting charitable projects at both a national and local level. This year grants from the festival will go to two charities. Dedicated to supporting young people with depression, and encouraging discussions around mental health, the Charlie Waller Memorial Trust was set up in memory of a young man who took his own life whilst suffering from depression. The Teenage Wilderness Trust supports students who find it difficult to engage with mainstream education by offering reengagement courses using bush craft, wilderness learning techniques and practical life skills to encourage students to get back into learning. .

ollowing five completely sold out performances of A Midsummer Night’s Dream in 2017, The Garden Players are planning an exciting new production of one of Shakespeare’s greatest plays, The Tempest. This magical tale of enchantment ranks as one of Shakespeare’s finest with five performances during midsummer week on the evenings of 18th, 19th, 20th, 21st & 22nd June 2019. They are delighted and excited to be back at Stubbings where by kind permission of the current owner Dudley Good, the superb gardens and lawns of Stubbings House, Maidenhead, a truly stunning venue, will be their outdoor theatre The lawns will be open for picnics from 5.30pm prior to each performance. While the performances will be open air, their audiences will once again be in the covered stand with raised seating which has been so successful in improving comfort and visibility since The Merchant of Venice in 2015. Prospero, the true Duke of Milan is now living on an enchanted island with his daughter Miranda, the savage Caliban and Ariel, a spirit of the air. Raising a storm to bring his brother - the usurper of his dukedom - along with his royal entourage, to the island, Prospero plans his revenge. “This magical tale is amongst Shakespeare’s finest ….. full of superb characters.” This year’s production will be produced by John Timewell who will be directing his fifth

new production for the company. John has gathered around him a particularly strong cast of well-known local actors from around the Thames Valley, many of whom are stalwarts of The Garden Players, as well as some exciting newcomers. Their aims are to stage high quality productions while maximising charitable donations and raising public awareness of the charities being supported. ay sees the start of the artichoke season, with UK grown ones starting around June. There is a unique sense of ritual to this delicacy .There are many types with spinney, petit violet, white globe and purple globe proving the most readily available. The edible part is
the immature flower head which is rich in antioxidants and is good for the liver and has detoxifying properties. This month’s recipe is for Artichokes a la Barigoule which allows the true artichoke flavour to shine through producing a delicious healthy light lunch or supper.
RECIPE: Artichoke Barigoule Ingredients
Method
Serves 4 • 25ml olive oil • 15 g smoked bacon lardons • 1 carrot peeled & diced 8 baby or pearl onions • 3 baby violet artichokes which have had the outer leaves removed and trimmed around the shaft and stem • 4 baby fennel bulbs trimmed 4 button mushrooms • 4 baby turnips • 4 breakfast radishes • 1 clove garlic peeled & thinly sliced • 50 ml dry white wine • 110 ml chicken stock • 1 small sprig chopped parsley • Salt and pepper
1. Gently fry the onions and bacon in the olive oil till lightly coloured, then add the other vegetables and fry gently for a further 2 minutes 2. Add the garlic then wine and increase the heat reduce liquid by half then add the stock reduce to a simmer 3. Cover the pan with a lid and cook for around 3 or 4 minutes 4. Remove lid and cook till the vegetables are coated in the thick glazed sauce 5. Add the chopped parsley and season to taste To Serve Spoon your vegetables into warm bowls and serve with some fresh crusty bread

Baby boomers moving in together T
here is a growing trend amongst baby boomers who have wealth tied up in their property and are living on their own to sell up and buy a house together with friends in their later years. Sounds like a great idea, but there are several things that need to be considered before moving in. B P Collins has a range of practices working together to provide you with the complete protection that you will need.
Residential property Matthew Crockford, associate When buying a home with friends, one option is to become ‘joint tenants’ whereby upon your death, your friends will automatically assume your share. However, if you have family, you may not wish for this to happen. Another option is to become ‘tenants in common’ where you can each own a separate share of the property which doesn’t have to be equal and is likely to depend on how much money each of you has contributed to the purchase of the house. If you pass away, this share can be passed on to your friends or family in a will. Where you have contributed in unequal shares, or if you want to set out what would happen if one party wanted to sell, you should consider preparing a declaration of trust. A declaration of trust sets out what is agreed at the outset and avoids any disputes further down the line. When thinking about how you’re going to pay for your share of the property, it may be the case that you’re able to buy your portion outright after making a profit when you’ve sold your own home. However, if you do need a mortgage it has become increasingly common for building societies to not impose an age limit on mortgage borrowers. However, most put the age you can be at the end of 4 4 M AY 2 0 1 9
the mortgage term at 80 years old, so be mindful of this before you apply.
Wills, trusts and probate Lucy Wood, partner It’s vital to plan for the future before moving in with friends. There are several things you should do such as create a will to ensure your assets pass to the individuals you have chosen, rather than the intestacy rules applying. In your will, you can give your interest in the property to your trustees to hold on trust for your identified beneficiaries. The trustees have the flexibility to decide how to deal with your share in the property based on the circumstances at the time. The trustees can be guided by a side letter stored with your will which you can change at any time without having to amend the will. You can also specify that after you pass away, your friends can remain in the property for the rest of their lives and once the last surviving friend is gone, your share in the property will pass to your chosen beneficiaries. Every member of the group should also set up a power of attorney, appointing people whom they trust to make decisions should they lose capacity. An attorney can make financial and/or welfare decisions on your behalf when you are no longer able to; this could include decisions about your share in the property. It’s also important that you discuss at an early stage what will happen if one party dies or loses capacity. If you’re moving in together as friends or as a couple, it’s important to seek legal advice. Why moving in together means preparing for the worst T here is an increasingly common scenario that I see which goes as follows: a couple who are not married have decided to live together and wish to purchase a house. For various reasons, one party provides a greater contribution to the purchase of the property (and in some cases, the only contribution), usually supported by a mortgage for the balance. The property is purchased in joint names with no declaration regarding shares or ownership. Time passes on, the relationship ends and the couple separate. At this point, the party providing the greater investment is shocked to learn that their contributions are not accounted for and that their share of the property is a simple 50%. So what’s going on? When purchasing a property in joint names, there are two ways in which you can own the property: as Joint Tenants or as Tenants in Common. If you hold the property as Joint Tenants, you each own the whole of the property together. If one of you were to die, the survivor would inherit the property regardless of the contents of any Will.
This is often seen as a benefit which protects your loved one from having to jointly own a property with your beneficiaries should the unexpected happen. However, it does not take into account contributions and the view of the Court is that there is a presumption to own the property equally. This means when it’s time to separate, each party will usually be considered to own half the property. If you hold the property as Tenants in Common, you each have defined separate ‘shares’ in the property. You can define the respective percentages owned by each of you and your ‘share’ of the property will pass in accordance with your Will. So how do I protect myself ? Whilst separation is the last thing you want to be discussing when purchasing a property, it is important to have the ‘what if ?’ conversation before you buy. If you are putting down a greater deposit, or are expecting to pay a greater share of the mortgage payments, it may be worthwhile considering how you wish to reflect this in your ownership of the property – especially if the funds are coming from a third party (such as parents loaning deposit monies). Provided you hold the property as Tenants in Common, you can record your respective shares in the property in a legal document called a Declaration of Trust or Deed of Trust. This document would set out how any sale proceeds are to be split in the event that you separate, which can be as simple or as complex as required. I’ve already bought my property – is it too late? Even if you’ve purchased your property, you can still take steps to protect yourself by preparing a Declaration of Trust and, if necessary, changing from Joint Tenants to Tenants in Common. This will require the agreement of the other party however, so it is best to approach this when the relationship is still amicable.
We’re separated. We previously agreed I would own a greater share but now my ex-partner wants 50% - is there anything I can do? The Court has the power to determine the respective shares each party owns in a property where there is a disagreement. However, such cases can be complex and require evidence. The Court is primarily concerned with the parties’ intention at the time of purchase, and if the property was purchased as Joint Tenants or as Tenants in Common with 50% shares each this will be evidence to the intention of an equal split. Even in today’s society it is an integral part of our history and traditions. How did it all start? Well, it all started back in the 18th Century when members of Parliament would leave their country estates with their families and reside in London for the opening of Parliament. Invisalign is the virtually invisible way to straighten your teeth and achieve the smile you’ve always dreamed of. Using advanced 3D computer-imaging technology, Invisalign depicts your complete treatment plan, from the initial position of your teeth to the final desired position. Then a series of clear aligners are custom-made for your teeth – and your teeth only – to move them little by little. Each aligner is worn for 1-2 weeks before being replaced by the next in the series, gradually moving towards the projected final position. Your Invisalign treatment time will be determined by Dr Popat, based on your specific needs. What are the benefits of Invisalign? Invisalign aligners are nearly invisible. No one may even notice that you’re wearing these virtually invisible aligners. How many patients are being treated with Invisalign? More than 5 million patients worldwide have been treated with Invisalign. The number of Invisalign smiles grows daily. How long does the Invisalign treatment take? The total duration of treatment depends on the complexity of the treatment and is generally comparable to that of traditional methods. Invisalign aligners are removable giving you the ability to eat and drink what you want during treatment by simply removing the aligners. And, you can also remove the aligners to brush and floss as you normally would for fresh breath and to maintain good oral hygiene. Unlike traditional fixed braces, there are no metal brackets or wires. Take control of skin cancer E
very year, there are an estimated 150,000 people diagnosed with a skin cancer in the United Kingdom. According to Cancer Research UK, there were about 16,000 new cases of melanoma skin cancer in 2015, the most dangerous form of skin cancer, which accounted for approximately 2,000 deaths. There are 3 main types of skin cancer, namely basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and melanoma. BCC and SCC are commonly referred to as non-melanoma skin cancers and are named after the cells in the skin from which they are derived. Melanoma arises from melanocytes, which are the cells that produce pigment in the skin. BCC is a slowly growing pearly looking red plaque or spot usually found on sun exposed skin and often bleeds and scabs repeatedly. SCC is a rapidly growing skin lesion, usually also found on sun exposed sites and can look like a red nodule with variable amounts of scaling or a non-healing ulcer on the skin. Finally, the most dangerous skin cancer, melanoma, can resemble an “ugly” mole, often with multiple colours. Special attention should be paid to a mole that is changing in size, shape and colour or a new mole in an adult. One should also be aware of pre-cancerous lesions such as lentigo maligna which can look like an expanding freckle such as on the face, and solar keratosis which presents as a red scaly patch or spot on the forehead, scalp and back of the hands. A lentigo maligna can transform into a melanoma whereas a solar keratosis can develop into a SCC. The main risk factors for skin cancer are excessive sun exposure, episodes of sunburn and sunbed use. A family history of skin cancer, large numbers of moles, and pale skin are other important factors. It is therefore vital that sun protection starts at an early age with the use of appropriate clothing and sunscreens.
What is a mole check and why is it important? A mole check starts with a thorough history of 7 0 M AY 2 0 1 9
the patient’s risk factors and lesions of concern. A full skin check is then performed with the patient undressed down to the underwear. Each mole is checked using a specialized imaging device called a dermatoscope, which allows the identification of early changes. Suspicious moles are then removed under local anaesthetic and then sent for testing. Other moles which display early suspicious changes are photographed and archived for future comparison. Patients with a lot of moles are then recommended to have a yearly skin check. Skin cancer is eminently preventable if the following recommendations are followed. First, it is important that patients perform skin self-examination every few months to look out for changes in their existing moles or check if they have developed a new skin lesion. Secondly, it is important to be proactive about getting the lesion of concern checked as soon as possible. Finally, it is vital to get your skin checked on a regular basis by an expert, for example, once a year or more frequently depending on the individual’s risk factors.

Twentieth Century Splendour Restored BEFORE

et back from the north Kent coast in Birchington-on-Sea, you’ll find Twentieth Century B&B. Over the last year locals have watched its transformation from a tired vestige of a bygone era into a beacon of Art Deco splendour. Built in 1935 by local builder Chas Hawkes, part of the house was originally his wife Kathleen’s estate agent’s office for housing projects. From the 1960s to 1986 it was owned by screenwriter and playwright Tudor Gates – Hammer Horror; Vampire Lovers; Barbarella – who famously used to hold rehearsals in the drawing room. The last owner ran it as a B&B and it was during a stay in 2016 that Kat Webb and Spencer Dean Stedman learned it was for sale and decided to buy it. Kat already had a clear vision of how she wanted the house to look, inspired by a dolls house from her childhood. The building has been extended in sympathy with the original design and completely renovated inside and out. According to Spencer, “We wanted to give it back that authentic look and one of the most important parts, especially for an Art Deco house, are the windows – that distinctive 30s style.” The original steel windows had been replaced with uPVC in the 1980s which never looked quite right.
