enley Festival, the UK’s most glamorous intimate festival, and winner of Headline Performance of the Year in 2016 returns to its spectacular setting on the riverbank in Henley-on-Thames from 10th14th July 2019. As the UK’s only black-tie festival, Henley Festival is glamour personified, offering Michelin starred food, award winning comedians, critically acclaimed artists and the biggest names in popular, world, jazz and classical music. Many festival goers arrive by boat, and the green lawns of the festival are transformed into a Great Gatsby vision, as black tie clad revellers spill across the festival site, champagne in hand, while fireworks explode overhead. Established 37 years ago as a classical music charity event, Henley Festival continues to be run on a not for profit basis supporting charitable projects at both a national and local level. This year grants from the festival will go to two charities. Dedicated to supporting young people with depression, and encouraging discussions around mental health, the Charlie Waller Memorial Trust was set up in memory of a young man who took his own life whilst suffering from depression. The Teenage Wilderness Trust supports students who find it difficult to engage with mainstream education by offering reengagement courses using bush craft, wilderness learning techniques and practical life skills to encourage students to get back into learning.

What does it take to become a personal travel manager?
Founder of Winged Boots, David Ox, gives us in an insight into providing travel that’s out of the ordinary

ou’ve spent hours scanning the web trying to find that ideal destination with your favourite cocktail on the hotel bar menu and you’ve given up. That’s where luxury travel specialist, Winged Boots, and its personal travel managers step in. However, forget waking up at eight for cornflakes to get to work for nine. Personalising holidays to every individual client’s wants and needs is not a ‘9-5’ job, as founder and managing director, David Ox, tells us… Originating from a black book of clients, Ox grew the business through providing great service to a small number of clients, who then referred their friends to him after appreciating the benefits of a bespoke experience. He now oversees the 20+ team and networks at a range of events to gain more customers: “A big part of my job is to find new clients and to also keep our existing ones happy, so I spend at least a couple of days a week in the city networking and following up on potential leads,” David says. “Certain people will only deal with me, so while the personal managers handle all the leads, I do still deal with some of the enquiries. No two enquiries, and no two days, are ever the same.” Another thing to put the personal travel managers under pressure? The average booking window for Winged Boots is only three months! Ox explains: “Winged Boots’ personal travel managers live and breathe the brand and give blood, sweat and tears to every booking. They’re looking after high net worth, demanding clients so these guys have to be on it 24/7. Our job is a lifestyle choice.” The calendar seems to expand at a quicker rate than places on your travel bucket list, with upcoming holidays and events in the interest of the company’s clients constantly being announced, so the personal travel managers must have their eye on the travel ball continuously. “The team have been busy organising all the flights for the recently announced Anthony Joshua fight in New York on the 1st June so there’s been lots of chopping and changing in the office of late,” David explains. Last minute bookings are how the team here roll. Along with a September wedding in Lake Como, business trips to South Africa and Orlando, and Christmas enquiries already trickling in, being a personal travel manager requires expert knowledge and a lot of juggling. However, it’s Winged Boots’ pledge of ‘going the extra mile’, which is what Ox says he is most proud of: “We’re willing to do what other agencies are not.
Whether it’s picking up the phone at 10pm on a Friday night to book a flight that departs at 9am the next day or trying to get complimentary upgrades or refunds where they’re due, we work around the clock fighting our clients’ corner.” You could be wondering by now how you haven’t come across Winged Boots before. Traditional advertising is a no-no here, and all the team’s efforts are drilled into the brand’s original concept lifestyle brochure magazine and events programme, which gives customers a little something extra. “We offer our clients tickets to shows at the O2 arena and host private dinners in London. We organised our first golf day in summer 2018 which was a massive success, so we’re constantly inviting our clients to interesting new events and networking with them,” Ox says. The final question is what are the rewards of the job? “I think it’s 70% enjoyable, 20% stressful and 10% completely unknown - but what job isn’t!” laughs Ox.

The Bluebell Wood B
erkhamsted Teaching Assistant Kelly Wright has written her first picture book entitled ‘The Bluebell Wood’. Kelly lives and works in Berkhamsted, working with children of a pre-school age and has put pen to paper to bring to life her own childhood memories, in the form of a beautiful book. The book is about a little girl who loves exploring, her favourite place to go is in the bluebell wood. She has many friends there, a Badger, a Hedgehog, a Mole and a Robin. She plays and explores with them in the wood, such as hide n seek, follow my leader and they listen to all the woodland sounds. It is a sweet and gentle story portraying simplicity and innocence through her love of exploring and friendship that she has with her animal friends. Kelly explains “It is based on a childhood memory that I had when I was a little girl where I played and explored in a bluebell wood.” Kelly did a 10 week course at The City University in London [Writing for children’s course] back in 2013 as she knew that she wanted to bring this memory to life in the form of a children’s picture book. “At the end of the course my tutor asked to see a draft sketch pad of my picture book, and encouraged me to get it published. It took almost 4 years to get it published, but I believed in my picture book, re-living my memories from playing in the bluebell wood. I knew I wanted to keep on trying to achieve what I believed was possible to do.” Kelly collaborated with an illustrator, Rosalind Lyons, to capture her memories onto paper and to create the animal characters that bring back fond memories for her. This included using the vivid colours of green, purple and blue that you will see throughout the book.

Kelly actually initially put this story to paper when she was just 7years old, so to see it come to life all these years later is a fantastic achievement. Her favourite page is where the little girl is playing hide n seek with her friends and the simplicity of the illustrations. The Bluebell Wood is a picture book for pre school aged children and for anyone who has a love of bluebells! It has been dedicated to Kelly’s much loved nieces and nephew. Available from The National Trust, the Ashridge visitors centre and other bluebell woods across the region, Kelly will also be doing a book signing at Ashridge end of April. “It gives me great pleasure to know that many children are reading or listening to my story ‘The Bluebell Wood’.”

Misuse of power (of attorney): how to avoid There has been a huge rise in challenges to decisions made by attorneys acting under a lasting power of attorney (LPA). Lucy Wood, partner and practice group leader of wills, trusts and probate at B P Collins, comments
A
n LPA allows you to appoint someone (an attorney) to make financial or welfare decisions on your behalf, when you are no longer able to do so. According to the Office of the Public Guardian, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of applications (759,956) for a family member or friend to be appointed as attorney in the year to April. Ten years ago, only 52,472 applications were made - less than 14 times the number being received now. Meanwhile, the number of people applying to the Court of Protection to challenge decisions made by those appointed under the LPA, on behalf of their vulnerable friend or family member, has also increased from 16,407 in 2008 to 38,945 in 2017.

7 ways an expert lawyer can help to avoid any misuse of position when appointing an attorney: • Although LPAs can be created without one, a lawyer can fully explain the pros and cons and what an LPA means for the donor to ensure they understand the extent of the power they are giving. • A lawyer will meet with the donor alone to discuss their instructions to limit any undue influence. • If the lawyer has concerns over the donor’s capacity to understand and give instructions they will involve a doctor to assess the donor’s capacity before proceeding any further. • Lawyers are a good sounding board when the client is deciding who to appoint and how they can act. We can also facilitate family discussions so any wishes, concerns or issues can be addressed early on, before the LPA is finalised. • A lawyer can talk the donor through the different types of instructions or guidance which they can include in the LPA to ensure their wishes are carried out should they lose capacity in the future. • Lawyers can even add an extra safeguard by storing the LPA until needed as it is a live document once registered with the Office of the Public Guardian. • Lawyers can be appointed as attorneys in more complex situations.

Post-Nups: What if? J
ust like the better known pre-nuptial agreement, a post-nuptial agreement sets out how a couple’s assets are to be distributed in the event of separation. The key difference is that this new agreement can be reached at any time after the couple have married or formed a civil partnership. As with pre-nuptial agreements, whether entering into such an arrangement will cause unnecessary emotional conflict is the age old question of “what if ?” Emma McMorrow from the Family Law team at Royds Withy King discusses the benefits of post-nuptial agreements and how they can help to protect significant matrimonial assets. The popularity of post-nuptial agreements is on the rise and the proposal may not always be one sided. Couples who earn on par with each other and are in a similar financial position may recognise the security provided by such an agreement. However, the post-nuptial agreement can also be used as a precursor to divorce and this is something that the party in a weaker financial position should be conscious of when considering whether or not to enter into such an arrangement. Many couples also choose to have a post-nuptial agreement when they are relocating to the UK. Wealthy individuals who relocate to London with their families are aware that the city has come to be known as the divorce capital of the world. English law takes a balanced approach when considering the needs of a partner who has not been the main

breadwinner as it recognises that contributions to the relationship and family life can be made in other ways. In light of this, certain wealthy individuals are turning to the post-nuptial agreement in an attempt to try and protect their assets. Like pre-nuptial agreements, post-nuptial agreements are not legally binding in English courts but they do carry weight, providing they have been signed by both parties without duress and alongside impartial and independent legal advice. For unmarried couples however, as in most of Family Law, their rights are very different. Weddings in the UK are in decline, the singles demographic is on the rise, inevitably leading to higher percentages of cohabiting couples who are not married. The law in relation to such couples is lagging behind the needs of society and the lack of automatic protection for cohabiting couples can often lead to lengthy and costly disputes. To avoid protracted litigation through the court system, unmarried couples can protect themselves via a cohabitation agreement. Such an agreement records the intentions of each party, coupled with a deed of trust (that sets out exactly who owns what in regards to property), which will help the court immensely when deciding a case. An Interview with Kuldip Chohan Judge on BBC1 ‘The Best House in Town’ H ave you ever wanted to snoop in on a neighbour’s house? The desire to want to obtain a glimpse into the lifestyle of others is almost primeval. Given the abundance of social media platforms providing ready and often instantaneous access into the lives of others, our collective inquisition on what goes on behind closed doors is insatiable. Last month saw the launch of a new BBC daytime show in which a group of individuals got to do exactly that. The series called ‘The Best House in Town’ aired on BBC1 and has raised an incredible amount of interest. Travelling around the country, each week sees a focus on one location and visits to proud home owners. Local representatives provide their verdict on which house they believe represents the best of the shortlisted properties. The series featured homes within and around St Albans, where we took the opportunity to meet one of the judges, Kuldip Chohan, and ask him about his experience on the show. How did you become involved? I was approached by the production company who asked me to audition for a position as a judge. I was naturally flattered but equally nervous and excited too. There was quite a demand on time as we filmed over a week, so it meant juggling commitments. I don’t believe any of us were prepared for what followed!
What qualifies you to be a judge? As the owner of Gallery Rouge, I have visited thousands of homes over the last decade, observing homes span the spectrum from poor to impeccable taste or layout. Whilst my expertise is in the arts, I have strong grounding around spatial planning, interior design and colour coordination. That holistic approach is often what my clients look for from me on a daily basis, and I suppose is where my point of view was desired to provide balance.

Not everything you saw would have been to your taste – how do you provide negative feedback? We were incredibly grateful for the homeowners allowing us in and were mindful that we didn’t have a full picture

of the home. For example, we didn’t get to meet the occupants beforehand so had no frame of reference as to their family makeup, the budget they had, or timeframe involved in turning their house into their home. I approached the process as I would with any client, or indeed artist – impartially and objectively. This wasn’t about ‘would I dress my home like this’. We had firm criteria from which to base our judgement, and I tried to stay true to those. I was conscious though that some of my comments may not be well received. In my profession I am used to providing critique – I tried to highlight areas that I felt could have benefited from a little more thought or addressed with minimal financial outlay. What did you learn? As in the appreciation of art, we don’t all like the same things and we don’t all have the same style. That’s what makes each of us unique and individual. I really admired those who had dared to be different, who had pushed the boundaries of convention and been bold in asserting their personality. This was never about right or wrong, and it was great to see so
much passion expended by homeowners in making a mark on their homes. Your house is probably the most costly asset you’ll ever own, and it reinforced my belief that you should invest in making it the best home it can possibly be. What’s your home like, and would you let people snoop around your house? I live in a modern town house, which I absolutely adore. Living over three levels means you must carefully plan how you wish to use each floor, and I feel we’ve got the balance right. Yes, it’s full of artwork as you’d probably expect, but the art is deliberately curated to create a different sense of style for each room. I’m proud of my home, and feel confident in sharing it with others, although my wife would be more reserved.

In his role at The Langley, Marco will work alongside the pre-opening team to develop the gastronomic concepts for Cedar, the Churchill Bar, the Drawing Room, Spa Lounge and the in-room dining options. Managing a team of talented chefs, Marco will oversee menu development and training for all gastronomic outlets, in addition to sourcing of local and seasonal ingredients and the creation of The Langley’s kitchen garden. ST ALBANS BASED WRITER TALKS ABOUT HIS CAREER IN CRIME
M
.J. Arlidge, the bestselling novelist and screenwriter is a relative newcomer to writing. After working in television production for nearly two decades, he decided to try his hand at writing. ‘I had always wanted to write’ Arlidge explains ‘but took years to pluck up the courage. Then, as I was approaching my 40th birthday, I decided that it was now or never. Eeny Meeny was the result, and screenwriting followed soon after’ adds Matt. Eeny Meany was in fact the biggest crime debut of 2014 and selected for the Richard & Judy Book Club. It was the first instalment of the bestselling Helen Grace series, which has now sold over one million copies and one of the most successful crime series to be launched in the last decade. Arlidge’s screenwriting career has been every bit as successful. After a spell on BBC’s Silent Witness he wrote and produced Innocent for ITV, an original screenplay starring Hermione Norris and Lee Ingleby. ‘Writing for established shows like Silent Witness was great fun, but it did feel strange servicing characters that someone else had created. Innocent was a wonderful experience’ says Matt. ‘I made it with three close friends and every minute was a blast. There are few things more exhilarating than watching an idea you had a couple of years before, take shape and finally make it onto the nation’s screens’ he adds. This spring sees the launch of new novel for the crime writer. A Gift for Dying is Arlidge’s first standalone novel which is already receiving plaudits from reviewers. how you will die. ‘It’s an epic serial killer thriller set in modern-day Chicago’ says Matt ‘I’m hugely proud of it.’ he added smiling. The novel is a departure from both the Helen Grace series and the more familiar UK setting for his books, but one he obviously enjoyed undertaking. ‘Chicago is a vibrant, modern pioneering city that is also riven with social tension and violence - it’s homicide rate is higher than that of NYC and LA combined’ Matt explains. ‘So, what better place to set a crime novel in?’ The violence of Chicago is a far cry from Arlidge’s home in St Albans. The novelist, who originally hails from London, moved to Hertfordshire when he and his wife started a family. ‘We were living in a top floor flat in North London but didn’t fancy lugging a buggy up and down the stairs’ Matt recalls. ‘So we visited St Albans and we fell in love with the place. It’s such a friendly, vibrant community that we felt instantly at home.’ Their move to the area proved fruitful and occasionally provides inspiration for the novelist, who often retreats to his local Waterstones to write. ‘I like people-watching. I have my headphones on, my laptop open, but all around me, life goes on, different characters passing by. I often wonder who they are, what makes them tick. Occasionally they even make it in to my book, if they are particularly striking looking!’. So will his home town feature in a future book? ‘No specific plans as yet’ Matt responds. ‘But I know it’s going to happen sometime. St Albans is such a striking city and has a history rich in bloodshed, conquest and espionage that it would be foolish not to use it at some point.’ A Gift for Dying by M.J. pring is now upon us with the hope of sunny days, as well as the joy of succulent new produce. The first spring bulbs are coming through and with them fresh sorrel and morels are beginning to spurt as well as wild garlic- to be found in its full glory! Also known as ramson, wood garlic or bear’s garlic it is a wild relative of chives. Wild garlic leaves can be used as a salad leaf, spice, boiled as a vegetable, or as an ingredient for pesto as an alternative to basil. The flavour is slightly milder to domestic garlic
and the bulbs and pretty white flowers can also be eaten. You can find your leaves in hedgerows, damp shaded woodlands and near streams, but we are lucky enough to have a delightful couple who are guests of the restaurant who keep us in good supply from a patch in their garden just down the High Street in Old Amersham. The leaves look similar to those of the Lily of the Valley, its smell being the ultimate clarification. This delicious, vibrant risotto marks the first taste of spring and perfect for a light lunch or a starter for dinner.
RECIPE: Wild Garlic Risotto with Young Spring Vegetables, Morels and Manchengo Cheese Ingredients Serves 4 • 250g Carnaroli risotto rice • 2 banana Shallot (finely diced) • 100ml dry white wine • 750 to 1 litre chicken or vegetable stock • 90g butter • 50 g aged manchengo cheese or Lancashire bomb • 100 g morel mushrooms or girolles lightly brushed • 1 bunch of young carrots washed and trimmed • 1 bunch of young leeks washed and sliced • 100 mil very lightly whipped double cream
Garlic Puree 1. Blanch the garlic leaves in boiling salted water for 15 seconds and then refresh in iced cold water. Drain off excess water and then puree half the leaves in the blender with the olive oil until smooth and then add the other half of the drained garlic leaves and continue to puree until smooth. 2. Blanch the baby vegetables in boiling salted water until just cooked retaining colour and crisp texture place to one side in iced water. 3. Sauté the wild mushrooms in a little butter season and put to one side Risotto 1. Start by heating your chicken stock.

There was an official launch from 1pm to 3pm on February 2. “The CGS chose Bucks County Museum in Aylesbury as the venue to display glass art work from artists based in the Midlands, surroundings counties and Greater London,” explains Sue Purser Hope, Chair of the Contemporary Glass Society. “The exhibition features work by members at any stage of their career and is unselected. All work is for sale. “The aim of the Glorious Glass exhibition is to demonstrate how utterly glorious and amazing contemporary glass is so that everyone can appreciate and enjoy its magical colours, textures, use of light and variety of techniques and also discover their own local glass artists. The work displayed will feature as wide a range of techniques as possible. here is no other country in the world, besides my own, whose way of life I like so much. I love English traditions, English politeness, English architecture. I even love English cooking.” Christian Dior (1905–57) The V&A has opened the largest exhibition ever staged in the UK on the House of Dior – the museum’s biggest fashion exhibition since Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty in 2015. From 1947 to the present day, Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams traces the history and impact of one of the 20th century’s most influential couturiers, and the six artistic directors who have succeeded him, to explore the enduring influence of the fashion house. Based on the major exhibition Christian Dior: Couturier du Rêve, organised by the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, the exhibition is reimagined for the V&A. A brand-new section explores, for the first time, the designer’s fascination with British culture. Dior admired the grandeur of the great houses and gardens of Britain, as well as Britishdesigned ocean liners, including the Queen Mary. He also had a preference for Savile Row suits. His first UK fashion show took place at London’s Savoy Hotel, and in 1952 he established Christian Dior London. The exhibition investigates Dior’s creative collaborations with British manufacturer, also
focusing on his most notable early British clients, from author Nancy Mitford to ballet dancer Margot Fonteyn. A highlight will be the Christian Dior dress worn by Princess Margaret for her 21st birthday celebrations, generously on loan from the Museum of London following conservation work. The exhibition also brings to life Dior’s spectacular fashion shows staged in the UK’s most luxurious stately homes, including Blenheim Palace in 1954, of which several ensembles are now in the V&A’s collection. Drawn from the extensive Dior Archives, the exhibition presents over 500 objects, with over 200 rare Haute Couture garments shown alongside accessories, fashion photography, film, vintage perfume, original make-up, illustrations, magazines, and Christian Dior’s personal possessions. It also showcases highlights from the V&A’s world-class Couture collections, including the iconic Bar Suit, gifted to the museum by the House of Dior in 1960 with the help of Cecil Beaton. The exhibition highlights Dior’s total design vision, encompassing garments, accessories and fragrances, revealing the sources of inspiration that defined the House of Dior’s aesthetic. From the daring designs of Yves Saint Laurent to the rational style of Marc Bohan, the flamboyance of Gianfranco Ferré, the exuberance of John Galliano, the minimalism of Raf Simons, and Maria Grazia Chiuri’s feminist vision of fashion, the exhibition shows how each successive artistic director has stayed true to Dior’s vision of Haute Couture, while bringing their own creative sensibilities to the House. Designers for Dior also spotlights the work of the subsequent six key artistic directors since Christian Dior’s death in 1957.

Giggling Squid, Henley On Thames
H
enley-on-Thames has been the home of a Giggling Squid for a number of years now. What looks like a fairly small restaurant from the street is surprisingly large, yet intimate, once you are inside. Cleverly they have created a space that is perfect for dining in a small group or, at the rear of the restaurant, space that caters superbly for groups. The restaurant again has the feel of being an independent. If you had not been to a Giggling Squid before you would really get the feel of it being an independent restaurant. The décor is stylish, unique and interesting yet not overpowering. We were seated at the front of the restaurant in a little alcove by the window – a perfect position that felt quite private with a view to the lovely wide street outside. Having been to Giggling Squid previously, we both have our favourites however the plan tonight was to go for something different. That is quite tough to do when you know how much you love another dish yet, as we suspected, we were not disappointed. For starters we chose a couple of dishes and shared them, allowing us to enjoy our absolute favourite of Salt & Pepper squid along with a new one, Lime & Chilli Beef. The Beef had a

nice kick to it, quite spicy which was good. So after savouring the delights of the starters we moved on to the mains. Pork Ribs in a homemade, three flavour sauce. Served with Morning Glory and Tenderstem broccoli the flavour was well spiced, not too hot, but with a kick. A prawn Massaman Curry certainly packed a punch, with the flavours of the sauce simply oozing out. An abundance of delightful seafood this dish really hit the spot! There were a number of delectable desserts to choose from, the Molten Chocolate Dessert won hands down twice (between us – we were so full!). Chocolate heaven to finish off a perfectly lovely meal. Throughout the meal the staff were attentive without being overbearing, advisory on the menu, friendly and welcoming. A great atmosphere, interesting surroundings – no wonder Giggling Squid are a growing chain. If you’ve not been, be sure to try them out. www.gigglingsquid.com. 01491 41044

LOCAL CAMERA CLUB MOUNTS SHOWCASE EXHIBITION Tring & District Camera Club is mounting a major exhibition in March called ‘Captured Light’

his free exhibition will be on display from Tuesday March 19th to Saturday March 30th 2019 at: The Upstairs Gallery, 268 High Street (above the Post Office), Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire HP4 1AQ. The gallery is open 10-4pm Monday to Saturday (Sat 30th until 1pm) This is the first exhibition for many years that the club has mounted to share the work and art of the members with the public. Suzanne Graff, the organiser, described this as “An important step forward for the club, in displaying the high quality of images that members have produced”. Excitingly it gives club members the opportunity to gain pride in their work by sharing with friends, family and the public. The club draws members from a wide area and although based in Tring, about one third of the members are from Berkhamsted. The club has become very popular in the past few years since adopting the goal: “to have fun, learning about creative photography”. Many members have seen their skills grow and widen as they become more adventurous with their photography projects, as can been seen by the high quality and variety of the exhibition entries. Both knees replaced at the same time with two surgeons!

r Henry Bourke and Mr Rakesh Kucheria, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons at Spire Thames Valley Hospital in Wexham, together offer a procedure, known as the bilateral simultaneous knee replacement, where they perform surgery on a patient’s knees, at the same time, one on each knee. Mr Bourke explains: “Double knee replacements are usually done on different days and months apart. So, the patient must go through major surgery and recovery twice. Alternatively, the replacements are performed one after the other, in a long operation. By operating at the same time for 60 to 90 minutes, Mr Kucheria and I can replace both knees in one go which means the patient takes less time to recover.” He adds: “We are a left-hand and right-hand combination of surgeons which means we don’t tend to get in each other’s way.” The most common reason for a double knee replacement is severe arthritis that is causing pain and stiffness in both knees. This typically interferes with activities of daily living and significantly reduces the sufferer’s quality of life. Bernie Irwin, age 66, was one of the first patients to have a bilateral simultaneous knee replacement at Spire Thames Valley Hospital. Both Bernie’s knees had started to deteriorate five years ago and over time, were starting to get worse. Bernie explains: “I was in constant pain whether I was lying in bed or getting in and out of the bath. Walking and working was so restrictive. My passion

is golf and I was not able to play very often. I realised I had to do something drastic.” He continues: “Having both knees done at the same time was so scary but so worthwhile, as the recovery time is the same as having one knee replaced. Mr Bourke was amazing. He explained everything to me beforehand and the care I received from Mr Bourke both before and after surgery has been superb. Having both knees replaced has made such a difference to my life. I am back to normal activities, I am pain free and after three months I am back playing nine holes of golf.” The recovery period for a bilateral knee replacement is between six to twelve weeks. Most of the time is spent at home, although in the latter few weeks, patients can get out of the house and do a little a bit of gentle walking. Unfortunately, patients cannot drive a car in the first six weeks and are not allowed to fly in this period due to the increased risk of deep vein thrombosis. However, most patients are mobile by six weeks, walking independently or just with a single stick. A return to gentle sporting activities such as golf usually is possible by three months. The initial appointment lasts about an hour to allow a thorough breast evaluation. This includes seeing a specialist Consultant Onco Plastic Breast Surgeon who will take a detailed history about your concerns as well as your past medical history and will then examine you. A breast care nurse will be present during all examinations. Following this, you will then undergo a breast ultrasound and, if you are over 35, a mammogram as well. If during your clinical examination or breast imaging, an abnormality is noted, your Consultant may recommend obtaining a biopsy. This is frequently in the form of a specialized needle to sample a very small piece of breast tissue. Local anaesthetic is used to make the area numb before the biopsy is taken. A small cut is then made in the breast and the biopsy needle inserted to take samples. The tissue is sent away for examination and takes 1 or 2 days for the result to be available. Once you have undergone your imaging (and biopsy if required), you will then again meet with the Consultant, who will explain the findings to you. You will also have an opportunity to ask further questions. If needed, a follow up appointment will be arranged. 70 MARCH 2019

Transparent bags If the primary purpose of your handbag is to haul around all manner of junk, look away now: The seethrough bags on show at Versace, Mary Katrantzou and Brandon Maxwell leave nothing to the imagination, so you’re going to need to do some serious decluttering if you want to wear one. The high street versions are far more forgiving, however. Perspex totes often come with a draw string insert, to hide your possessions from prying eyes.
Natural bags One of spring’s overarching fashion themes is a return to nature, with crochet, raffia, macrame and other natural materials offering an alternative to leather at Isabel Marant, Loewe and Jacquemus. Early diagnosis is key to successful treatment of arthritis
A
rthritis is common worldwide and is associated with significantly impaired quality of life and disability. So far, 207 types of arthritides have been identified highlighting the diagnostic challenge for patients and health care professionals. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is one of the most common types of arthritis affecting 1% of the population. The condition affects approximately three times more women than men and its onset is generally in the 5th and 6th decades however it may occur at any age. Uncontrolled RA leads to significantly reduced quality of life and premature mortality primarily as a consequence of increased cardiovascular disease. However, the outlook for patients has altered dramatically over the past few years with disease remission now the therapeutic goal. This is dependent on a number of critical interventions and the role of our patients is pivotal in the process. There is a ‘window of opportunity’ for people diagnosed with RA. Those diagnosed and started on optimal treatment within 12-weeks stand a much better chance of achieving remission. However we know that many people with RA are not being diagnosed and treated in time. Poor public awareness and a lack of timely referral are causing significant delays. Research

shows that people with symptoms of RA usually wait a number of months before first going to see their GP and then visit their GP several more times before being referred on to a specialist for diagnosis. Following presentation to primary care, patients with symptoms and signs of an inflammatory arthritis should be referred to a rheumatologist. This imperative has been highlighted in the NICE guideline on the treatment of RA. The guideline suggests urgent referral if any of the following apply: • the small joints of the hands or feet are affected • >1 joint is affected • there has been a delay of >3 months between onset of symptoms and seeking medical advice. The basis for this advice lies in the observation that early disease is more amenable to intervention. A window of opportunity exists whereby early treatment results in a greater chance of inducing remission. Ideally, this should be within six weeks of symptom onset. As a proportion of patients who develop severe persistent inflammatory arthritis will have normal investigations at disease onset (e.g. rheumatoid factor, anti- CCP antibodies, ESR, CRP and X-rays) they should be referred regardless. Similarly the referral should not be delayed pending investigations.

The Art of Chinoiserie T
he Asian-influenced decorative style of chinoiserie first flourished in Europe in the 17th century and has gone on to become a staple, striking feature in art and interior design ever since. The name ‘chinoiserie’ itself comes from a French tongue-in-cheek term meaning ‘a little Chinese’ or ‘Chinese-ish’, denoting the fact thatdespite its clear Asian inspiration- chinoiserie did not originate in China but in France, around the time that Europe first began to trade with the Far East. With its whimsical, Orient-inspired depictions and French roots, chinoiserie is a design style which is truly unique. Throughout the Regency period, the homes of royal and aristocratic families of France, Great Britain, Spain and Italy were adorned with mock-Chinese and Japanese artefacts, lavish items of chinoiserie and oriental silk upholstery. Chinoiserie was a significant feature in the designs of the palaces of King Louis XV of France and King George IV of England. Today, flip through an interior design magazine or scroll through social media to admire high-end properties and you’re highly likely to come across elements of chinoiserie. Some recognisable motifs and features include foo dogs, dragons, nature scenes, traditional Chinese architecture and more. Tell a texture story If you want to give a scheme some ‘wow’ factor, look no further than texture. Layering a mixture of soft fabrics - from fluffy sheepskin cushions and chunky wool throws to cowhide rugs - will not only draw the eye, which is essential in a muted scheme decorated in neutrals that could otherwise look bland, but also add cosiness. Adding texture is all about layering, so have a few key pieces, like a statement rug, a velvet chair, or a leather sofa, and then add smaller accessories and soft furnishings until the room feels complete. Don’t forget that your scheme need never be ‘set in stone’. Moving or replacing a few texture-rich accessories is an easy way to re-energise and refresh the whole balance of a scheme.

Pay a floral tribute Nature’s finding its way into more and more interiors, and flowers, potted plants and succulents - both real and faux - are an easy way to bring natural appeal to rooms. he launch of the Netflix show ‘Tidying Up with Marie Kondo’ has brought much-needed inspiration on how to declutter and organise the home - namely with the popular Konmari method. Based on advice from the show’s star, Marie Kondo, Rebecca Snowden, Interior Style Advisor at Furniture Choice shares tips and tricks on how to spark joy in the most relaxing room of the house the bedroom.
Tackle clutter by category Created by Marie Kondo, the KonMari method breaks clutter into five categories - clothing, books, documents, miscellaneous and sentimental items. Putting everything into one big pile makes it easier to get organised, as it allows people to see how much they really have. “Tackling clutter based on the KonMari method helps to maintain order and prevents having to purge again,” Rebecca advises. “This also helps on a psychological level, as it reminds us to think about what we need to buy instead of fixating on what we want.”
Keep objects that spark joy Practicing gratitude is an important part of Kondo’s ethos and that comes through in how she suggests working through each category. Her approach is to pick each item up to see if it sparks joy - if it does, keep it, and if not, it’s time to let it go. “So to know if something sparks joy, hold it in both hands and see how the body responds. You will feel a certain thrill if something sparks joy, and a sense of heaviness if it doesn’t. This is a chance to ‘thank’ an item for its service before moving on, and highlights how to tackle clutter in an organised and cheerful way.”

can be tricky so it is important to keep things in order and easy to identify. Kondo’s method of folding clothing in thirds and then standing them up, takes up less space, so it works equally well in wardrobes as well as smaller spaces such as bedside tables and chests of drawers. “This method may take some getting used to, but makes it simple to visually keep track of the clothes you have. On top of that, if you wanted to colour code your wardrobe, the uniform look and size of each item means that turning your wardrobe into an Instagram-friendly dream is easily achievable,” Rebecca explains. “The ‘fold and stand’ method is also perfect for beds with built-in storage - a part of the room that can be easily overlooked. Ottoman beds have ample room for essentials like bedding and towels, and attached drawers that will benefit from this KonMari trick. This can help to create a sense of peace whenever a drawer or cabinet is opened to reveal a tidy and organised space.”
Make use of small boxes Using small boxes for clothing and other essentials is a particularly useful storage tip for the bedroom. The compact size of the boxes easily fit into drawers and wardrobes and are perfect for clothing or miscellaneous items. This is especially useful for stray items that tend to go missing easily - rings, watches, glasses - and makes getting ready in a hurry a lot easier. “A good thing to use here might be old gift or shoe boxes - they’re often a great size, and upcycling them is a wonderful way to make use of something that might otherwise be discarded ,” Rebecca says. “It also allows people to get creative, giving them a chance to DIY the boxes to match the decor or complement their aesthetic. This can be another way to spark joy - bringing together elements of decorating and tidying.”And bonus: it’s also easier to clean and move things around while still keeping everything tidy.”
