New collection of homes unveiled in Rickmansworth St William releases a collection of apartments at Elmswater, with its first phase Crane Lodge

n Saturday 3rd February Elmswater, in Rickmansworth, formally launched its first phase, Crane Lodge. Elmswater is the latest project from landscapeled developer St William, part of Berkeley Group. Comprising 48 two- and three-bedroom apartments, the project offers a rare opportunity to find a new-build home in idyllic surroundings, yet within easy reach of rail hubs, road routes and airports. Aptly named after Elms Lake, which it neighbours, Elmswater is positioned within the Three Rivers District of Hertfordshire. Look who’s coming to Chesham For those who are yet to discover Neptune, theirs is a world of beautifully made furniture, textiles and accessories for the home and garden. Design wise, they’re perhaps most known for kitchens with their heirloom-worthy dressers not far behind. But it’s their approach to design that also helps to set them apart from the rest.
E
very Neptune product tells the tale of incredible thought and detail, because they want them to be better than you ever expected. It’s not all about looks. It’s just as much about the way a product works; things that you may never see, but which elevate a design into that special something that you just couldn’t ever be without. And they’re certainly most respected for their commitment to craft and quality. Never will you find chipboard in a Neptune piece, nor will you see MDF, ever. Put simply, they make things they’re proud of, and want you to be too. Founded in 1996, the Wiltshire-based brand has grown and grown and now has just shy of 30 stores across the UK and Europe. And when we say stores, that doesn’t really do them justice. Neptune approaches the build and design of its stores as a long-term investment, transforming often old, unloved buildings into spaces that feel like a home. Its furniture is presented in room scenarios, so you wander from living room into kitchen into bathroom and in many of its stores, out into a garden or terrace. It’s a way to understand how the furniture translates to real rooms, but also how effortlessly they all come together. Each Neptune store may have been designed with the same approach, but no two are ever quite the same. Some are restorations of historic buildings, while others are conversations of former public houses. Neptune Chesham however, was built, from scratch, to resemble three miniature homes. It’s technically a new-build, but its architecture and the materials used on its exterior, such as flint and timber, were chosen to be inkeeping with the local vernacular. It blends in so

ith the arrival of spring just around the corner it time to make the most of blood oranges, kale and purple sprouting before they disappear. Moving into March the cold waters
make for great fish including sardines, mackerel and shellfish this month are particularly good so why not try this simple recipe using rope grown mussels which are not only delicious sustainable and readily available from good fishmongers.
RECIPE: Mussels with a Cream and White Wine Sabayon
Serves 4
Ingredients: • 1.75 kg mussels - cleaned • ½ onion • 1 small bay leaf • 150 ml dry white wine • 3 medium egg yolks
• 150 ml double cream • 100 g unsalted butter • Squeeze fresh lemon juice Seasoning • 2 tblsp chopped parsley
Method: 1. Slice the onion, and place with the bay leaf and white wine into a large saucepan. 2. Bring up to the boil and leave to simmer for 5 minutes. 3. Add the mussels to the pan cover and cook over a high heat for 3-4 minutes until the mussels have opened. 4. Place the mussels into a large serving bowl, cover and keep hot 5. Whisk the egg yolks and cream together in a large bowl. 6. Strain the mussel cooking liquor into the bowl. 7. Rest the bowl over a bain marie and continue to whisk briskly until the mixture is light and frothy 8. Whisk in the butter a small piece at a time. 9. Remove the bowl from the heat and season to taste with the lemon juice and seasoning 10. Pour the sauce over the mussels, sprinkle with the chopped parsley to finish

he first ever Pub in the Park festival took place in the beautiful town of Marlow in May 2017. Parental alienation P
arental alienation is a common occurrence in the UK. According to CAFCASS (Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service), it exists in a considerable number of the 125,000 cases it deals with every year. Parental alienation is when one parent actively attempts to distance their child from the other parent, by, for example, badmouthing or belittling the other or persuading the child that the other parent doesn’t love them, to, at its most serious, seeking to persuade the child to permanently exclude the other parent from their life. Anthony Douglas, Chief Executive of CAFCASS, has commented that parental alienation is a type of adult behavior which causes adverse childhood experiences and has suggested it is a form of child abuse. CAFCASS is attempting to combat this serious issue through a pilot scheme that will initially give parents the opportunity to change their behaviour through counselling and therapy. Ultimately, in the most serious of cases, if the parental alienation continues, the child or children may no longer be allowed to live with the alienating parent or indeed have contact with them. It must, of course, be recognised that some parents may have genuine reasons for not wanting their child to have contact with the other parent. Parents with legitimate concerns are not who the scheme is aimed at. This scheme is intended to help families where there are cases involving high conflict, including (but not limited to) parental alienation. It is hoped that when the pilot scheme comes to an end, a full programme will commence in the spring of this year. At B P Collins, we have sadly seen the impact that the alienation of one parent can have on a child and that, in some cases, the alienation begins even

prior to the parents’ separation. It can be extremely damaging not only at the time it starts to occur but as the child continues into adulthood. In some cases one parent may not see their child for months or even years because the child believes everything the parent who they are living with is saying; or may not want to offend or be ‘disloyal’ to them, and on this basis chooses not to see their other parent. We believe that this is a positive move from CAFCASS, but of course it remains to be seen how the scheme will work. We are, however, in support of what it is trying to achieve and of the recognition that where there is genuine parental alienation, this can be damaging and action needs to be taken. We also support its recommendation of counsellor intervention, which B P Collins often suggests, as the practical advice imparted can really help both parents and the child address this issue before the child feels permanently estranged from one parent. This is a highly complex issue and if a parent considers that their relationship with their child is deteriorating or their child starts to want to spend an increasingly reduced amount of time with them, then advice should be sought from a specialist family lawyer. The earlier this issue is detected and addressed the better, and hence a new scheme directed at early intervention must be welcomed. Silent Pool Distillery to open new distillery extension
W
ith the drive to expand their presence both nationally and internationally, Silent Pool Distillers, producers of the multiaward winning Silent Pool Gin, are due to open their new distillery in April this year, just three years after they first started back in 2015. The new distillery extension will contain an 1800L, custom made copper still, 5 times the size of their original still Juliet, allowing the company to keep up with the current and increasing global demand. Unlike many other distilleries, Silent Pool Distillers proudly bottle their spirits onsite ensuring that each product is entirely crafted within the four walls of the distillery. It was of great importance to the company that even with increased production, their ethos of personally overseeing every stage of production remained. With the aid of an EU grant the distillery will also unveil a new bottling line built in Italy which will enable the company to hold true to overseeing each stage onsite but also to meet the

fast growing demand. The expansion has been driven in large part by exports, Silent Pool Gin is now available in over 24 countries including most of mainland Europe, Japan and America; this has resulted in more jobs for local people and local trades who supply the business. The efficiency of the larger still will allow the innovative distillers to dedicate more time to product development within gin but also whiskey and brandy. Part of what makes the distillation process so authentic is the method they use to power their hand made still. Similar to Juliet, the new still will be heated by steam from a reclaimed, vintage boiler that’s fired on local hardwood. Originally designed to power a steamboat in a 1980’s film, this classically British, McEwen boiler has been reformed and adopted by the distillers at Silent Pool and is now an essential part to the production of their handcrafted spirits. Becoming a ‘greener distillery’ was integral in the planning stages of the expansion and with over 40 solar panels covering every square inch of the new roof, the distillery extension will now generate enough electricity across the year to be completely carbon neutral, Silent Pool Gin really will be made by sunshine! Millionaires’ Ex-Wives Club Is divorcing really that harsh in reality?
A
s a family lawyer, I tend to avoid television programmes about divorce. Dealing with it on a day to day basis can be stressful enough without thinking about it my spare time and I find that it is so often depicted in a completely unrealistic way. However, I was intrigued enough to watch the recent BBC Two documentary “Millionaires’ Ex-Wives Club” after a friend mentioned she had watched it and was, in her words, “terrified” by it. I have to say after watching it myself, I could see why. The programme followed two high-profile divorcees sharing their experiences of divorce in Central London. There was Michelle Young, haunted by 10 years of her life spent in contentious litigation (including over 60 Court hearings) and spending £17m on legal fees only for her husband to fall to his death in mysterious circumstances and for her to not see a penny of her £26m divorce settlement. “Where is the justice?!” she exclaimed. Whilst she may have a point, it was difficult to feel sympathy when her husband had allegedly offered her £30m just a few days before his death only for her to turn this offer down, convinced her husband was hiding pots of gold offshore. She was left bankrupt with only £300,000 to her name from her husband’s life insurance policy. We then saw Lisa Tchenguiz, wealthy in her own right before she met and married Vivian Imerman, “The Man from Del Monte”. Seeking 50% of her husband’s fortune after a 9 year marriage, Lisa sought £150m; her husband offered her £2m. After a 4 year battle (and only possible as she had money in her own name to afford her legal representation), Lisa finally had enough and settled at £15m so she could get on with her life. 40 MARCH 2018
What concerned me about this programme and why I considered it frightening to the “average Joe” is that the vast majority of divorces do not involve years of litigation, sky high legal fees, hidden assets and deception. Since the first ever London Marathon on 29th March 1981, the race has grown in size, stature and popularity ever since. Now established among the major events in the sporting calendar, the London Marathon is shown on television in more than 150 countries around the world.
A
s a fundraising event, there is no race in the world that comes close to the London Marathon. Thousands of runners pound the streets of London with sheer determination, to raise money for charity, many in fancy dress, hoping to stand out from the crowds. More than three quarters of competitors now run for a good cause and a third of all entry places are offered by charitable organisations. The 2018 Virgin Money London Marathon will celebrate the unique spirit of the world’s greatest marathon, showcasing the extraordinary stories of its runners, champions, volunteers, supporters and spectators through the new Spirit of London campaign. Runners in 2018 include: • Sunday 22 April is the 25th anniversary of the murder of Stephen Lawrence. Stephen was a keen runner who took part in the Mini Marathon in 1988. His mother, Baroness Lawrence, is the nonrunning captain of a team of ten runners who 46 MARCH 2018
will be raising funds for the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust. • Charlie Guenigault, the off-duty police officer who was seriously injured in the London Bridge terrorist attack when he went to help victims, is raising funds for Kings College Hospital Charity, the hospital that saved his life. • Two teams of nine firefighters, one from Paddington and one from North Kensington fire stations, who were among the first responders to the Grenfell Tower fire, are running to raise money for Grenfell associated causes. The three greatest distance runners of their generation will race this year - Sir Mo Farah, Eliud Kipchoge and Ethiopian legend Kenenisa Bekele have a combined total of eight Olympic gold medals and 12 World Championship golds between them. Farah, 34, is the most decorated with four Olympic gold medals and six World Championship victories over 5,000m and 10,000m, David Weir aims to win his eighth men’s wheelchair title with a record £17,000 on offer to the winner. Weir became the London Marathon’s most successful champion in 2017 when he clinched a seventh victory. With increased awards for the first 10 finishers in each race, it’s no surprise that the 2018 wheelchair fields are two of the largest in London Marathon history and competition for the coveted titles will be hotter than ever. Celebrity runners include Gordon Ramsay MBE, newsreader Sophie Raworth, actor Stephen Mangan, Casualty’s Jaye Griffiths, Lee Mack, DJ Scott Mills and Katie Price. atched by thousands along the banks of the River Thames and by millions more on TV around the world, The Cancer Research UK Boat Race is the world’s most famous rowing race, and one of the biggest free sporting events in London. The annual contest between two rowing crews from Oxford and Cambridge universities, is now one of the oldest sporting rivalries, following a challenge between old school friends. The first ever race took place in 1829 in Henley on Thames and since the second race in 1836 the contest has taken place in London. April 2018 will see the running of the 164th Men’s Boat Race and 73rd Women’s Boat Race, both now taking place on the Championship Course.

Race course, known as the Championship Course is 4 miles, 374 yards or 6.8 Km long, stretching between Putney and Mortlake. The start of the race is marked by the University stone, a few hundred yards upstream from Putney Road Bridge and for the first quarter of a mile, as the crews pass the historic boathouses of Putney Embankment. The Finish Line is just a few yards downstream from Chiswick Road bridge and here the crowds on Race Day are as densely packed as those near the Start. What those crowds witness as the crews cross the Line is the ecstasy of the victors and the despair of the losing crew. On Race Day up to 250,000 spectators crowd the banks of the Thames to witness the action. Remember, all the riverside pubs will be heaving, with the crowds spilling out onto the towpaths. If you’re planning to watch from a pub, arrive early! There are large screens at Bishops Park, Fulham and Furnival Gardens, Hammersmith which mean you will be able to watch the whole Race before and after the crews have passed. The parks will also feature food outlets, beer stands and merchandising stalls.

here is some speggtacular Easter Family Fun at Brooklands this April with an Easter Egg Trail that will keep visitors entertained every day from 30th March – 15th April. During this period visitors will be able to collect their free Trails on arrival, head off around the Museum to solve the hidden clues, and then back to the Shop to claim their FREE chocolate prize. And there are loads of other Easter attractions at the Museum to keep visitors absorbed for the rest of their visit once they’ve solved the Trail clues. The Museum’s long-established and hugely popular rides in vintage-style cars and on London Bus Museum’s iconic double-decker buses will also be operating during weekdays from 3rd – 13th April. Car rides take in the challenging summit of Test Hill and the Members’ Banking, the steepest part of the original Race Track, as long as it’s not too wet or slippery. Or, for a more relaxed journey, hop on board a real double-decker bus for a bus trip through the surrounding streets. Car and bus rides will run in the mornings and afternoons with a short break for lunch and are subject to crew and vehicle availability. The Concorde Experience is a half-hour virtual supersonic ‘flight’ on the Brooklands Concorde and runs every day, but on each weekday from 3rd – 20th April, special Kids Tours will be running twice a day. And don’t forget to look out for the Museum’s larger than life mascot, Bertie Bear, who will be roaming the site looking for fans to have his photograph taken with weekdays 3rd - 13th April. The Brooklands Learning Team will be running two FREE drop-in workshops for youngsters: from 3rd – 6th April they can test how much cargo a paper plane can take while from 9th – 13th April they can have a go at painting their own Pompom Easter Egg to take home. All of the Museum’s regular displays and activities will be open to help families have a lively and absorbing visit,
including the new Brooklands Aircraft Factory and Flight Shed. Inside the newly restored Bellman hangar, visitors will be able to clock in and don factory workcoats as they begin their ‘Brooklands Apprenticeship’. A series of workshops and interactives explore some of the skills used over the 80-year history of aircraft manufacture at Brooklands. On a new mezzanine level, the story of design at Brooklands is told and visitors can design their own military and civilian aircraft from different eras of aviation including those of the future. Leaving the Factory and entering the new Flight Shed visitors will see some of the Museum’s collection of complete aircraft, including opportunities to sit in the cockpits of the Hawker Hunter and Harrier, as well as displays on radar, ground-to-air radio and pioneering pilots. The Sunbeam Café is the ideal place for refuelling and add to this a visit to the Museum Shop to pick up a souvenir and you have the recipe for a perfect day out come rain or shine.

NEW FIGURES SHOW MORE DIE FROM PROSTATE CANCER THAN BREAST CANCER
T
he number of men dying from prostate cancer has overtaken female deaths from breast cancer for the first time in the UK, new government figures have this week
revealed. The latest figures – taken from 2015 and announced at the end of January – show that there were 11,819 deaths from prostate cancer compared with 11,442 from breast cancer. Now, as part of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, which runs throughout March, Mr Aza Mohammed a Consultant Urologist at Spire Harpenden Hospital, wants to see a big rise in the number of men over 45-years-old visiting their GP for an examination that could save their life. He explained: “The most common test usually involves a ‘digital examination’. That means the doctor feeling inside the man’s back passage. It is common practice for the doctor, usually takes less than a minute, is relatively painless and could save your life!” The causes of prostate cancer, which is responsible for more than 10,000 UK deaths each year, are largely unknown but what is certain is that chances of developing it increase in men over 50 years of age. Although it is more common in men of African-Caribbean or African descent it is actually less common in men of Asian descent. Men whose father or brother has been affected by prostate cancer are also at higher risk of being

affected themselves. Mr Mohammed said: “A blood test known as a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test can be the first step to checking for cancer but this can only supply an indicator. “The problem with the PSA test is that levels can be raised by non-cancerous growths or urinary infections of the prostate. But it is better to be safe than sorry and, if necessary, a follow-up test will then allow doctors to be much more exact in their diagnosis.

he offer of complementary therapy is sometimes greeted by hospice patients with quizzical looks and cries of: “It’s not for me.” But as soon as they experience the treatment, they simply cannot get enough of it after realising its many benefits, says beauty therapist Nicky Boughton. Nicky, a mother-of-two from Hazlemere with her own thriving business, has volunteered at the hospice for around seven years, coming in once a month to give free beauty treatment to patients. Several other therapists – offering treatments such as reflexology, reiki and acupuncture – also help out at Butterfly House. “There are some patients who initially say they don’t think complementary therapy is for them or that they won’t be able to relax while having it,” said Nicky. “They normally end up really enjoying the treatment. Often, they fall asleep during the therapy and it amazes them how much better they feel.” Nicky sees six to eight people a day and their conditions include cancer, brain tumours, Parkinson’s Disease and MS. She said: “It’s called complementary therapy

So, they tend to find the massages very relaxing and sleep better that evening because their stress levels have been brought down. “For the ladies, the manicures and pedicures are really beneficial. They love it because their nails can suffer quite a bit through treatment. Just to have a manicure and have their nails painted can make all the difference to their day, especially if they are feeling quite low.” Nicky first decided to volunteer after helping her mother-in-law who was in a hospice suffering from cancer. “She didn’t live around here but I found out she was going to her local hospice and there were no treatments on offer, so when I visited her, I did hand and arm massages for her, and she enjoyed it. It made me think I would like to offer something to people where I live.” Perhaps her most memorable moment at The South Bucks Community Hospice came when she treated a breast cancer patient. “She loved her massages but was going through chemotherapy and had lost her hair and eyebrows and was feeling very low. So, I said ‘why don’t you bring your make-up and we will have a makeup lesson?’ I showed her how to pencil on her eye-brows, did her make-up, painted her nails and she had a massage. Her face lit up at the end of it and she felt amazing. That is probably my fondest memory at the hospice.” The list of alternative treatments offered at Butterfly House by Nicky and colleagues includes: acupuncture, aromatherapy, Swedish massage, Thai hand & foot massage, Indian head massage, reflexology, reiki, mindfulness, facials, manicure/ pedicure and hairdressing. “We could accommodate more patients and it would be great to have more volunteers,” said Nicky. “To the doubters, I will say complementary therapy is really worth it. Just try it once and you may be shocked at the difference it will make to you.” Hospice Chief Executive Officer Jo Woolf said: “We know from first-hand experience that this therapy really does work wonders. W
ith the rise of boutique studios, at-home workouts and a number of A-list celebrity fans, boxing is quickly becoming the number one workout for honing a strong and toned fighter’s physique. Victoria’s Secret models swear by it, Tom Hardy uses it to bulk up ahead of his films and singer Ellie Goulding even says the sport helped her overcome anxiety and panic attacks. As an added bonus, you don’t have to worry about getting a black eye in the process, as many studios and classes are now geared towards non-contact fitness. Thinking of throwing some punches this winter? We spoke to some of the UK’s top boxing experts to find some pretty convincing reasons why you should strap on some gloves and step into the ring.
It can strengthen your core If you’re looking to tone your abdominal muscles, crouching in a fighting stance is a fast and furious way to target your midsection and whittle away body fat. “Having a strong core is definitely one of the benefits of building up your punch power,” says Olu Adepitan, head of fitness at BXR London. “Your core muscles are a vital link between the lower body and upper body and help transfer force during the punching actions.” The good news is you don’t have to reach Mohammad Ali levels of greatness to reap the benefits, either. “Even beginner level boxers will get amazing core strength gain,” says Adepitan. “This is simply through having good punch technique and engaging the core muscles correctly.”
It’s a full-body workout Whether you’re looking to drop a dress size, get bigger arms or achieve Action Man-levels of abdominal definition, boxing is one of the best forms of cardio to target the entire body and see results, fast. Popular HIIT-style boxing classes get you working to 60 and 90% of your maximum heart rate, and studies have shown this sweet spot can help burn fat more quickly and increase endurance. “I don’t think any muscle escapes,” says Anthony Fletcher, a boxing trainer at KXU. “It’s one of those workouts where there’s no isolation; when you throw a punch, you’re using your toes as much as you are your hips and your shoulders, so it’s impossible for your muscles not to work.”
It’s great for mindfulness If you struggle with racing thoughts after a day firefighting a busy inbox, boxing is great way to switch off the mind and knock out stress. “When you box, you’re aware of your own body because you have to get into a position that’s alien to you all day. If someone tells you to stand with one foot forward, 68 MARCH 2018
one foot backwards and put your hands up, you’re suddenly forced to be very mindful of where your body is - how it looks and how it feels,” says Fletcher. Punching away at a heavy bag is also a great way to get a feel-good rush of endorphins. “There’s lots of scientific evidence that training the cardio respiratory system is one of the most effective ways to improve your mental health,” agrees Adepitan. “Regular boxing can have a profoundly positive impact on issues like depression and anxiety, and it also relieves stress, improves memory, helps you sleep better and boosts overall mood.”
It’s empowering Forget running or Pilates - boxing has the edge over its competitors because it’s considered one of the most effective forms of fitness for real life self-defence situations. “We’re not teaching our clients to go out and bash people’s heads in,” says Fletcher, “but a lot of my my female clients say they want to take up boxing to improve their self-confidence in situations where they might feel vulnerable or threatened.” He believes it’s also great for getting ahead in the workplace. “I have one client who owns three companies, and finds that her assertiveness in the boardroom when dealing with difficult characters and customers at work, is totally transformed after a morning of combat sports.”
It’s inexpensive One of the best things about boxing is that it can be a much cheaper (yet just as effective and demanding) alternative to other heart-pounding hobbies. “A pair of gloves can be as cheap as £20 and a pair of wraps can be £5,” says Fletcher, adding that many gym classes will often provide the equipment too. “Obviously there are more expensive gloves and collector items out there, but when you’re just starting out, it can be very inexpensive.”

Experts say we should be putting vitamin C on our faces, not just eating it. Katie Wright finds out why.
W
e all know vitamins are good for our health, and that we need a varied diet rich in colourful fruit and veg if we want to reap its antioxidant and immune-boosting properties. But did you know ascorbic acid - aka victamin C - can work wonders when applied to your skin too? “Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant and its properties are vital for skin health,” says plastic surgeon Dr Marc Ronert, director of Image Skincare. “With its incredibly beneficial effects on skin cells, it can help create firmer-looking and feeling skin by improving collagen synthesis, while fighting against uneven skin tone and frustrating dark spots on your face and body.” “Collagen is a tough, fibrous protein that is relatively inflexible and very strong. It supplies the basic framework that gives your skin its form, firmness, and strength, while elastin provides flexibility,” explains renowned dermatologist Dr Gary Goldfaden. “Overall, the amount of new collagen your 72 MARCH 2018

t the beginning of every year, Pantone declares its Colour of the Year, and we start to wonder how we can incorporate the chosen hue into our beauty routines. Finding the balance...
When it comes to finding the balance between old and new, an interior design scheme can prove to be challenging for most of us. We spoke to Tobias Oliver Interiors, to seek some professional advice on one of their recent projects.
What were the requirements for this project? Our Client required a totally new design for their master bedroom suite. They requested a luxurious bedroom and en-suite with a calming effect to reflect their own stylistic preferences and tastes. Fortunately for us, these were very unique and elegant, making the process thoroughly enjoyable. With a keen interest in the history of this period home, together with a mutual appreciation for the homes natural setting – we were asked that the character of the rooms reflected high quality within the design scheme, with a touch of Tobias Oliver Interiors glamour! It looks like a period property, what’s the secret to working in a home like this? The property is a 17th Century thatched period home located near Berkhamsted. The old wattle and daub walls, exposed oak beams, uneven floors and pitched roof gave us more than a few challenges to work with. We adopt an openminded and versatile approach and are not precious about our ideas and suggestions – after all, there’s always an alternative solution to a problem. Creating a sense of collaboration and sharing a vision is vital to the success of each project.

We opted to keep the existing movement in the old wattle and daub walls, which helped to retain the charming character of the room. We also installed new built in wardrobes and bespoke cabinetry to allow for the best use of space. With no straight or level walls, floors, ceilings and chimney-breast – achieving even lines was no easy challenge! To achieve this we worked closely with our local master craftsmen to keep all the furniture and cabinetry completely level. Where do you source your suppliers, artisans and craftsmen? Often these contacts now approach us directly. With a reputation shared amongst suppliers, gradually word spreads that we have an outlet for their extraordinary work. Over the years we have developed a strong network of trusted suppliers, artisans and craftsmen both locally and internationally. We travel to design shows in London, Paris and Milan to keep at the forefront of the interior design arena – enabling us to offer our Clients’ the best quality of design possible. With this particular project an international approach was required. The antique bronze and brushed brass leaf wall-light fitting was sourced in Paris, we wanted to simulate a gust of leaves across the wall – this together with the ‘bark’ like antique bronze handles to all the furniture helped to bring that feeling of nature into the room in a subtle way. The antique bronzed handles were forged at our foundry in France. The crystal ‘Laurel’ ceiling chandelier was shipped from Los Angeles and certainly adds to the glamour factor! We introduced some elegance by way of a beautifully shaped dressing table chair, made in London by an upcoming furniture designer. A delicately applied intricate beading detail and diamanté’s are added to a smart splayed pleat arrangement at the base of the chair – this resulted in a beautiful and interesting feature the client loved. We used a mixture of fabrics and trims across all pieces of furniture and table lamps to create a unique design that continues through every element of the room. The fabrics and trims were all sourced at Design Centre Chelsea Harbour. We often take our Clients to the Design Centre at the outset of each project, as this proves very helpful in demonstrating the infinite possibilities available to us as professional designers.
The furniture looks stunning! Can you explain how you achieved these designs? We have used pieces from our new Marcia Collection of furniture in this project. When designing interiors and furniture we endeavour to avoid ‘trends’ as these can quickly expire, thus innovation for us is something less obvious - it’s a twist or a subtle detail, or a collection of details which slowly imbue. Bespoke furniture designed by Tobias Oliver Interiors is totally unique in it’s style. Handmade to the highest quality using the best materials by local British master craftsmen. Proportion, composition of materials and functionality are carefully considered during the design process. The Marcia furniture collection has preselected finish combinations to allow the furniture to be custom-built to any home or design scheme. Favourite element to this scheme? The dreamy stepped winged headboard with antique studding! Ultimately luxurious - with a gorgeous arrangement of fabrics and trims throughout the headboard, cushions and bed throw.

What are your plans for the year ahead? We are currently working on a handful of local projects which we look forward to signing off in the coming months. We also have two international projects beginning later this summer. Finally, we are expanding to Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire! Due to the growing success of Tobias Oliver Interiors, we will be opening a new luxury lifestyle showroom and interior design studio on Berkhamsted High Street in Autumn/Winter 2018. ocated in the centre of Radlett this exclusive area has generous house plots with generally substantial houses. Our site previously housed a single bungalow of no historical or architectural note. Our clients brief was to demolish the existing house and replace this with 2 generous houses, one of which to become their new house, the other to sell on. Each house is some 600m2 spread over 3 floors, which negotiate the changing levels of the site. As such the first floor from the front approach leads you through to the rear garden level. The highly contemporary properties respond to the surroundings utilising white render, but in simple modernist forms with timber cladding and elegant glazing systems, which create a delicate blend of privacy and views. The Greystone houses were shortlisted for the Hertfordshire Building Futures Awards 2011. The judges commented: “the Greystones houses are a perfect example of how sustainable design can be intertwined effectively with modern amenities in a domestic setting.” www.nicolastyearchitects.co.uk

tips for improving your bathroom
Redoing your bathroom can be a great opportunity to improve the layout, but there are lots of things to consider...

1. If you’re happy with the layout of your bathroom, replacing the suite should be straightforward and relatively inexpensive, but if you want to change the layout, expect it to be more complicated and costly. Unless you’re a very experienced and competent DIYer, get a good plumber to do the work. They should be able to offer advice about changing the layout and what is and isn’t possible or advisable, as should a good bathroom/interior designer. A professional may think of things you haven’t, such as what you can and can’t do with the wastes, which could affect the layout and the products you choose. 2. If you’re not using a designer and rejigging the layout is proving tricky, try drawing the bathroom on graph paper. Draw the room’s features, such as the window, door, airing cupboard, etc, on one piece of graph paper and the fittings you want on another, using the same scale. Then draw different layouts on different pieces of graph paper and lay them over the first plan to see how they work, or make life simple and do all this on a computer or tablet! 3. Once you have a layout you’re happy with, it’s a good idea to make life-size templates of the fittings in cardboard to try in the room. Having an above-bath shower will restrict where you put the bath, for example, and you may come across other problems when placing your templates. Better still, try the actual loo, basin, bath, etc, when the room’s empty to see how they work together and in the space you have. If returning them isn’t a problem, you could try different loos, basins and baths if you’re unsure about which will work best. 4. Don’t forget to work out how much space is needed to comfortably use the loo and basin and to dry off after having a shower or bath. Pack in too much and you’ll find that your bathroom isn’t particularly easy, practical or pleasurable to use. It’s important to choose a suite that’s in proportion to
the size of the room. Straight baths, for example, come in different widths and lengths, but if you’ve got a really small or awkward space, a tapered bath may be ideal. If there’s more space, a shower bath, which is roomier at the shower end, can be a good choice. 5. Freestanding baths and separate shower cubicles need room to breathe, so squeezing them into a small space isn’t advisable. If your heart’s set on a freestanding bath, but you don’t have room, a freestanding-style shower bath is a good compromise. This looks like a freestanding bath, but the tap end and one side is flat so it sits flush against two walls, meaning you can have a shower above without water leaking down the sides onto the floor.

As the charity Butterfly Conservation celebrates its 50th anniversary, its garden expert Natalie Ngo explains how to help the beautiful insects thrive.
G
ardeners nationwide are being encouraged to do their bit for butterflies by taking part in a national Day of Conservation Action on March 10, to mark the 50th anniversary of the charity Butterfly Conservation. Planting the right material to help butterflies on their way is vital, says the charity. The insects love nectar-rich plants like buddleia and lavender - but they must also have the right types of breeding grounds. The charity’s garden expert Natalie Ngo explains: “Creating a haven for butterflies isn’t all about nectar. A lot of them use grasses, including skippers, marbled whites, meadow brown and gatekeeper.” Most butterflies lay their eggs on plants which will be eaten by the caterpillars when they hatch. The eggs are generally laid on the underside of leaves and each caterpillar type likes only certain kinds of leaves.

Create an area of long grass and wildflowers Let an area of grass grow long and meadow brown butterflies should breed in it. But it’s not generally lawn grass or ornamental grasses which are used. Among the best are some of the bents (agrostis), cocksfoot, false brome, fescues and meadow grasses. They are wild grasses, not ornamental. “Lawns are slightly different grasses. Rye grass isn’t quite right for butterflies,” Ngo explains. “Buy a packet of wild grass seed and find a patch.” If you have room, sow wildflower seeds. The flowers and grasses provide nectar for butterflies and moths, along with food and shelter for their caterpillars. Even a tiny meadow area in a rural garden or a tub of colourful wildflowers in the city could provide a wonderful refuge for pollinators. “I had wildflower seeds in a pot which lasted for years. I’ve also got grasses in a pot and I found a caterpillar on the grass. They will find it.”
Use colourful additions Silver-studded blue will lay their eggs in heather, while honeysuckle provides an ideal spot for white admiral, and violets attract fritillaries to their leaves. Some caterpillars will feast on nasturtiums, which can act as a deterrent to them eating your cabbages. If you want your planting to remain relatively neat, plant buckthorn within your hedging to attract brimstones, and holly as a hedge, which attracts holly blue butterflies.
Keep clumps of nettles Many common garden butterflies, such as the red admiral, comma and small tortoiseshell, lay eggs on stinging nettles. The colourful nymphalid butterflies will lay their eggs on the nettle leaves, which will provide food for the caterpillars. Look out for eggs laid singly
by the red admiral and comma or in batches by the small tortoiseshell and peacock. The eggs of all four butterflies will hatch in one to three weeks, depending on temperature.
Make the rest of your garden a magnet for butterflies Choose sunny, sheltered spots when planting nectar-rich plants, as butterflies like warmth. Put in a variety of plants to attract different types of butterflies and plant the same varieties in blocks. Make sure you plant to cover all seasons, taking into account the importance of spring flowers when butterflies are coming out of hibernation, to autumn blooms which will help them build up their reserves for winter. Keep flowers going by deadheading regularly, watering well and mulching with organic matter, to boost nectar supplies. For more information, go to the Butterfly Conservation website

OFFICE A calm and stylish space can boost productivity and look good, as entrepreneur Liz Earle tells Gabrielle Fagan.
M
illions of us now spending some, if not all, of our time working from home. And one of the joys of working in your own space is that you’re the boss when it comes to design and ambience - so you can escape dull desks and bland decor and kit out your own personalised sanctuary to suit your taste. Entrepreneur and beauty and wellbeing expert, Liz Earle, has teamed up with blinds and curtain specialist Hillarys (hillarys.co.uk), to reveal her own home office and simple but effective tips to help you conjure a stylish work area of your own, where you can be happy as well as productive. “It’s a quick and easy strategy for creating the perfect space, or could be used for an existing office makeover, which could be just what you need to reinvigorate your home-working life,” enthuses mother-of-five Earle, 54, who lives on a farm in the West Country. “There’s undoubtedly a whole host of benefits to home-working, particularly from a health and wellbeing perspective, whether that’s because you’re escaping the daily commute or because you’re able to spend more time with the family.”

Read on to discover Earle’s approach for creating a calm and stylish home office... Work with the light “Put your desk in front of a window; plenty of natural light is the holy grail, as it’s known to significantly help increase energy, creativity and productivity,” advises Earle. “Wood or faux wood Venetian blinds are perfect for home office windows as they filter light, which will minimise glare on a computer screen and the slats can be adjusted to control light levels when the sun moves round during the day. Go for function but don’t forget about style. Roman blinds soften the look, and a pretty botanical fabric brings a lovely feel of nature into the room.” Make an eco desk choice “Make your office more eco-friendly with a desk made from reclaimed scaffolding boards and simple trestle legs,” Earle suggests. “Scaffolding boards can be picked up cheaply from a salvage yard, and the beauty of doing this is that you can design your desk according to your space and needs. Make sure there’s room for a task light and desk accessories.” Invest in a great chair “As tempting as it sounds, dragging a chair from the dining room or a stool from the kitchen is a false economy,” Earle warns. “An ergonomically designed chair may not give you the designer feel you had in mind - but your back will thank you for it! You can always pretty it up with a cosy sheepskin or throw. Don’t hunch over a laptop - set up a computer monitor at eye level and use a separate keyboard, ergonomic mouse or track pad. Rest forearms on the desk while typing and invest in a simple foot rest to ensure you sit with legs at a comfortable 90-degree angle to the floor.” TIP: Try to do simple stretches and strength moves regularly throughout the day. You don’t necessarily need equipment - try out chair yoga which can be done while seated.
Get crafty with accessories “It needn’t cost the earth to decorate your office. Charity shops and car-boot sales are perfect hunting grounds for quirky, vintage pieces, or you could indulge in some DIY creativity,” says Earle. “Cover plain cardboard box files with wallpaper or fabric for a fabulous bespoke look. A pin-board, made from a wooden picture frame, foam and fabric, is a great way to display photos, to-do lists or other information you want to see at a glance.” TIP: Schedule things in your diary that make you happy, not just work tasks. Bring nature into your space “It’s been proven that plants in the workplace can reduce stress levels and increase productivity,” Earle points out. “Aside from these health benefits, plants are a cheap and cheerful way to add decoration and bring the outdoors in. I opt for green, leafy plants like ferns or ivy, avoiding cacti whose spikes can create the opposite of a relaxed feeling, or flowers with a strong scent, which can be distracting or irritating.” And if caring for real plants doesn’t quite work out for you, there are great faux options available these days, so you can still get that calming, leafy look. Conceal the clutter “But remember, the more stuff you add to your desk, the more your brain has to keep track of,” adds Earle. “Working in a crowded space can be mentally exhausting and distracting, even if you don’t realise it. Get creative with storage. I’ve used soft, floaty voile curtains to disguise a shelving unit.” Create an uplifting display Finally, treasured photos that spark joy, and meaningful sayings to keep motivation levels up, make an ideal finishing touch. “Pictures and photographs can be a great way to inspire creativity and a feeling of wellness,” says Earle. “Pick out three or four that are significant to you and make sure those are in your view.”
