TOP TIPS FROM

ASHRIDGE HOUSE W

ith many Ashridge House staff working from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we asked Ashridge House Events Sales & Marketing Manager Natalie HalliwellJennings how she has adapted to working from home… “Ashridge House is a former royal palace to Kings and Queens, a grade II listed stately home with 190 acres of beautiful historic gardens and I am lucky to have an office at Ashridge with incredible views to the front of the house, so it was always going to be a challenge adjusting from working in a royal palace to my kitchen in Tring! I have to admit my first two weeks in lockdown were not my finest, wearing athleisure wear instead of business attire and becoming a compulsive snacker in the process; I also found difficulty with switching off, as the lines became blurred with my laptop permanently stationed on the kitchen table. So as the lockdown looked set to continue in the weeks possibly months ahead, I created some top tips to help me adjust, and happily I have not only adapted to working from home but am now thriving!

Here are my top tips for working at home: • Find a workspace that is separate to your kitchen if possible. The kitchen is the heart of your home and where you relax and enjoy your meals. Surrounded by tempting snacks is too distracting and also not great for your waistline! • Make your new workspace as comfortable as possible, find the best chair available and support your back with cushions if required. I have now chosen a cosy corner in my lounge with lovely views 14

to the gardens. • Prepare a tea tray for your work station: a pot of tea, a cafetiere with some lovely coffee and water with some lemon slices. It’s important to stay hydrated! • Do not wear athleisure wear, or stay in your dressing gown - wear appropriate clothes even it’s just jeans and a shirt as this will help you stay focused. • Keep in touch with your colleagues; at Ashridge we start and end the day with a team zoom call, it’s so nice to see everyone and helps to stay connected and share ideas. • Have a routine and try to stick to your working hours and not let the lines become blurred. Take a lunch hour and regular breaks. Enjoy your lunch in the garden if you have one, take advantage of sunny weather to get some vitamin D and dine al fresco if possible. • If you are struggling to adjust or caught up in thoughts and emotions which aren’t helpful right now, try meditation, exercise or talking to someone. At Ashridge we are super lucky to have Professor Megan Reitz create mindfulness sessions for staff to virtually link up to, so I try and check in with these to help keep me centred. • Stay present, rather than wishing this time away. This is a moment in time, and soon life will begin to return to normal, where we can safely meet face-toface with friends and colleagues; so until that time comes, pop the kettle on, enjoy this time working from home and I look forward to welcoming you to Ashridge House very soon!”

“Keep in touch with your colleagues; at Ashridge we start and end the day with a team zoom call, it’s so nice to see everyone and helps to stay connected and share ideas”

Domestic abuse during coronavirus lockdown: what help is available? D uring this period of coronavirus lockdown, there has been a notable rise in levels of domestic abuse. MPs across the political parties have demanded that an action plan aimed at tackling these increased levels is implemented urgently, warning that without intervention, society will be dealing with the consequences for a generation. Support services have reported a surge in calls to helplines, while the Metropolitan Police said they had made 4,093 arrests for domestic abuse offences since 9 March. Domestic abuse is a term that covers a wide spectrum of behaviour. It does of course include physical violence but also controlling and threatening behaviour, financial, psychological and emotional abuse. If you suffering any such abuse at the hands of your partner or a family member, then there’s support available to you. There does however appear to be significant confusion with regards to which services remain available to victims of domestic abuse during this ongoing period of lockdown. The organisation, Refuge has issued advice on living as safely as possible with an abusive partner until the lockdown restrictions are lifted and the National Domestic Abuse Helpline is open 24 hours a day.

16

JUNE 2020

Beyond these support services, family solicitors are still available to offer advice and the family courts remain operational, with hearings being heard remotely. The courts are taking steps to protect any victim of domestic abuse and urgent cases will be heard and appropriate protective measures put into place. Such measures available to the family courts include non-molestation and occupation orders. A non-molestation order is designed to be used in circumstances where an individual is experiencing threatening behaviour or harassment. The court has the power to restrict how often one person contacts another and by what communication method, if contact is allowed at all. An occupation order regulates how a family home is used by the occupants. In many cases such an order requires someone, usually the abusive party, to leave the property. CAPTAIN TOM MOORE ON THE SECRET TO LIVING A

LONG AND HAPPY LIFE

Liz Connor speaks to the 100-year-old war veteran about how his love for walking and his eternal optimism have kept both his mind and spirit young.

W

hen Captain Tom Moore embarked on a personal challenge to complete 100 laps of the garden in his Bedfordshire home before his 100th birthday, he was hoping he might garner enough local support to raise a modest £1,000 for the NHS. What happened next, his daughter Hannah recalls, was ‘unimaginable’. Clutching his walking frame for support and proudly wearing his WW2 medals, the war veteran’s steely determination to keep lapping his garden, come rain or shine, quickly captured the hearts of well-wishers worldwide. Donations, tributes and national news interviews poured in. By the time his 100th birthday (marked with a Spitfire flyover and more than 120,000 cards from fans around the globe) came around, Captain Moore’s status as a national hero was cemented. His JustGiving page has raised an incredible £32 million in donations, while the charity single he released with Michael Ball made him the oldest artist to claim a UK No 1. “I had no idea it would be that popular,” says 18

JUNE 2020

“As I walk, I often think about the [lyrics to the song] Michael Ball and I released, ‘walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart’. As the kind people kept donating and donating, not just locally, but throughout the world, I kept going. It was the reason why I go on walking and enjoy every step.”

Captain Moore of his fundraising effort. “It was just [an idea] within the family initially - walking up and down for exercise - but then it just grew and grew.” “We’re just an ordinary family really. We knew we had a lovely story to share, and we shared it with the world willingly,” says Hannah, who initially put together a short press release about her father’s charity walk, which was in tribute to the NHS nurses who cared for him after he fractured his hip two years ago. “We thought that maybe local radio that would be interested and that it would be great to raise a thousand pounds. The extraordinary journey we’ve gone through the last five or six weeks could never have been imagined.” Despite being 100, and having battled various health issues over the years, Moore says there was “no real hardship” in reaching his extended goal of 200 laps. In fact, he very much enjoyed the challenge. “The first lap was the hardest, but after that I just got used to it,” he says, with his trademark good humour. “As I walk, I often think about the [lyrics to the song] Michael Ball and I released, ‘walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart’. As the kind people kept donating and donating, not just locally, but throughout the world, I kept going. It was the reason why I go on walking and enjoy every step.” When it comes to living a long and happy life, Moore says it’s all about having the right mindset. “I think you’ve got to be optimistic; to think that things will get better.” “I don’t think anyone really thinks about [getting to 100],” he adds. “When I was 50, I never would have imagined that I was half way through my life. Now that I’m 100 though, it doesn’t feel any different from 99. I’m very pleased that I’ve got to this age though and it’s just a case of seeing how much longer I can hang on.” Staying fit and healthy seemingly comes naturally to him too, as his unflappable zest for life has kept both his mind and body young. “I’ve never been someone that’s sat around. All my life, from being a boy, I’ve always been active and doing things. Before I had trouble with my leg, I spent so much time in the garden. I weigh the same now as I did when I was 21.” Moore, who was born in 1920 in Keighley, Yorkshire, embarked on an apprenticeship as a Civil Engineer as a young man, but paused his studying at the age of 20, when he was conscripted to fight in World War Two. Joining the 8th Battalion of The Duke of Wellington’s Regiment, the young soldier was stationed in Cornwall, where he helped to defend the coast from the threat of German invasion. Later, he was enlisted to India, taking a treacherous six week journey by sea, and he also served and fought on the Arakan in Burma, where he battled through jungle to reach the frontline by motorcycle, defending the British colony from the

Japanese. Did he ever fear for his life while fighting for his country? “I don’t think so,” he recalls. “When you’re in the army and you’re 20-years-old. you’re not thinking too much about being in danger. It’s part of the adventure of life. I don’t recall ever being frightened. Maybe I should have been! But we survived. “I look back on my service in the army as a very enjoyable time and I still think about it now. There was so much comradeship between us. If I was capable, I’d do the same thing all over again.” He continues to add: “I think things have changed considerably for young people. Before World War Two there was a certain degree of poverty and people were finding life very difficult. At the present time, people are still finding it difficult, but it’s not as hard now as it was then. We still need to continue this life with hope and think that tomorrow is going to be as good a day as possible. That’s always been my mantra.” Recently, Moore announced he will publish two books, one of which will be an autobiography, in support of his new charity, the Captain Tom Foundation. The second will be a children’s book. “I never thought anyone would be interested in my story and I certainly didn’t think it would ever go into print,” he chuckles. “I’m a bit frightened about telling all my secrets!” He continues: “I’m a very slow writer though, so maybe I need someone [to help] to speed [it] up a bit for me. “ I ask him what he thinks about the growing public petition for him to be awarded a knighthood for his valiant fundraising efforts. He laughs: “I think that’s an excellent idea, but I don’t think there’s the slightest chance that it’s going to happen. Sir Thomas Moore would sound very good, but don’t hold your breath!” As for his next goal? “I need to live a little bit longer, so I can read back all of these books I’m writing,” he jokes. Captain Tom Moore’s autobiography Tomorrow Will Be A Good Day and his children’s picture book are available to pre-order now (Michael Joseph, PRH) JUNE 2020 19

Creating Wills and LPAs during the pandemic

L

ockdown and social distancing rules are not coming to an end overnight. There will be a gradual relaxation over the next few weeks and months, as life very slowly adjusts to the ‘new normal.’ The coronavirus crisis is encouraging more people to think about their future, such as choosing a trusted friend or family member to act under a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) should they lose capacity and they need someone to look after their affairs. Others are wishing to create a will to protect their loved ones after they die. Anyone thinking about a Will or LPA is urged to seek bespoke, professional advice from a lawyer. It might be tempting to choose a do-it-yourself option during lockdown, but there is a much higher risk of your wishes becoming invalid as the legal processes may not have been followed and the intestacy rules could apply. As this is one of the most important decisions you’ll ever make, a lawyer will encourage you to think about options that you might not have thought about and enable your decisions to be as tax efficient as possible.

How can a B P Collins lawyer help?

• Although LPAs can be created without a Lawyer, we can fully explain the pros and cons and what an LPA means for the donor. • We can make sure that the client has capacity to understand the process and that there is no undue influence involved. • We can act as a sounding board when you are deciding who to appoint as an attorney or how to 20

JUNE 2020

deal with your estate under the terms of your Will. • We ensure there are no mistakes and that the documents are correctly executed, getting this wrong can invalidate the Will or LPA. • We make sure you get it right and that your wishes are accurately recorded. A home-made Will may not work in the way the testator expected, if the incorrect words or phrases have been used. • We look at the whole picture, establishing your overall aims and considering how best to achieve those while identifying any potential issues and tax considerations. • We can be appointed as attorneys, executor and trustees, in more complex situations. • We can add an extra safeguard by safely storing the Will or LPA for you.

Recording your wishes during lockdown with B P Collins

The recent social distancing measures introduced as a result of Covid-19 has changed the traditional approach of gaining legal advice. B P Collins’ solicitors are offering virtual or phone appointments to those wishing to make a Will or create an LPA. The meeting via video or phone will be used to take your instructions, ask questions and receive some options and inheritance tax advice if appropriate. Following that meeting, we will send a draft legal document for you to review. Once happy we can send out the document for signing with detailed instructions, which adhere to the most recent social distancing guidelines.

THE DETAILS B P Collins’ team of qualified wills, trusts and probate lawyers are both regulated and insured for the work we do. We have a duty to keep our legal knowledge up to date to give you peace of mind and to deal with any queries you may have. For further advice and information please contact Lucy Wood from our wills, trusts and probate team on 01753 889995 or email enquiries@bpcollins.co.uk.

LATEST PROPERTY ADVICE L

ocal property expert Phil Booth has 32 years’ experience selling homes in the Thames Valley and owns a boutique estate agency in Henley-on-Thames. Phil has experienced several economic downturns in his career and is well placed to answer questions about the current market.

Sellers Is now a good time to sell? I’ve not yet seen a significant dip in house prices, but that doesn’t mean that there won’t be a latent effect during the rest of this year. The market is currently active, and viewings are picking up. But over the next few months, as government support for businesses is reduced, employers may make cuts that impact household spending power. Best to act sooner rather than later. If you had planned on moving house this year then it may be worth resetting your previous expectations. You may need to be more flexible on pricing or timescales than you had hoped. What should you be looking for in an estate agent? Ideally you should have 3 agents providing market appraisals on your home. They should offer this service free of charge and with no obligation. Don’t reveal the appraisal values to each agent, as you should form a consensus from independent opinion. Invite agents with a good track-record in selling properties in the local area: both large agencies and well-experienced independents. Review the local newspaper or on the online portals to see who is actively advertising your type of property. Or seek recommendations from local social media groups, where bona fide customers will share their experiences. Don’t be tempted by an agent that gives you the highest value. It’s flattering, but it may not sell 22

JUNE 2020

your home. Some agents will inflate values to ‘win’ your business, only to encourage a price reduction in short order. Agents should provide you detailed evidence of their research, so you can feel confident that you are taking the right advice in setting an attractive and realistic price for your home. Don’t be tempted by the agent that offers the lowest commission fee. This is a false economy and as with many things, you get what you pay for; so choose the agent that is motivated to steer you through the end-to-end process, and who you feel is the most authentic and trustworthy. You will have to work closely together, so choose wisely. Should I accept a lower offer? Sometimes, you should. Was the price realistic, or inflated? How long has your property been on the market? Have there been any offers? Are you also buying a property? Sometimes a perceived loss on your sale can be offset by a discount on your purchase if you are selling and buying again in the same market. Don’t accept silly offers - there’s enough activity in the market that you shouldn’t have to. But you may need to make some concessions if your goal is to move home successfully. Your agent should help you to negotiate this.

“I’ve not yet seen a significant dip in house prices, but that doesn’t mean that there won’t be a latent effect during the rest of this year”

Buyers Should I worry about losing money on a property? Our part of the world is highly desirable, particularly with families looking to move out of London. There will always be an active market for our properties; but recently, people have forgotten to buy with their hearts, which has taken some of the joy out of house-buying. There is an expectation that buyers must make cunning investment decisions - and in some cases this has driven cheeky offers that my clients would never consider. The price you offer should always reflect the value you perceive in that home. To be honest, if you’re buying a home to live in because you love it and it works for you, then you’ll rarely be disappointed in your decision. If you are planning to live there for several years then the uncertainties of the current market will likely have disappeared before you’re looking to sell again. The average time that buyers spend in a home is now 10 years, so enjoy the home. You’re not trying to make a quick buck.

June recipe I

have been looking at a few simple recipes that you can recreate at home using available ingredients for this month, reflecting seasonality something that underpins Artichokes philosophy on cooking. Should you find yourselves with any possible shortcomings of ingredients adaptation will be king, this sea bass dish works equally as well with bream or cod and accompanying garnish can be exchanged for chickpeas for new potatoes and celery for fennel.

If you fancy elevating the dish to the next level simply add a few fresh unopened mussels or clams 5 minutes before removing from the oven. A perfect dish to have ready to go into the oven just before your walk or daily exercise! Helping Young People H

i, I am Carl Moreton and the founder of MyFutureSelf, the mentoring service working with young people across Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire. A recent national survey by YoungMinds found that just under 85% of young people self-report deteriorating mental health during this pandemic, including increased anxiety, problems with sleep, panic attacks or more frequent urges to self-harm. Whilst the NHS have also found that one in three young people experience bullying. Concerningly, the majority of mental health support for young people is provided by education settings. With most young people now learning from home, they are trying to cope alone. Yet, without guided support and mentoring, it can be hard for young people to process what they are experiencing, so I would like to start a conversation with you about your young person and their mental health. This pandemic is hard for everyone. Whilst some may not outwardly show it, not being around friends, missing school and spending a lot of time within the same four walls is always hard to cope with. It is important to acknowledge these emotions and understand that they are normal reactions to present circumstances, but please talk about them openly and transparently. Nobody wins from staying silent.

32

JUNE 2020

I have been working with young people throughout the pandemic to support them with their emotional wellbeing, relationship issues, confidence and self-esteem, in doing so I have observed the following issues: • Anxiety is on the rise. The impact from social distancing combined with worries about the future, education, health, not being able to take part in dayto-day activities and lack of control is increasing stress and anxiety. Coping mechanisms, support systems and routines are being disrupted by the measures to control the pandemic. • Increasing sense of loneliness. Without opportunities to socialise, learn and having access to their wider support network, young people are feeling lonelier. Autonomy and freedom has suddenly diminished and more time at home can lead to overthinking and use of negative coping strategies. • Compromised online safety. Being online is something most young people are doing right now, and it is helpful for many to stay connected. However, some young people have negative experiences online and it is estimated 90 cybercrimes are recorded every day against children, ranging from cyberbullying, viewing inappropriate content, grooming and sexual exploitation.

Here is some advice, based on my experiences working with young people and families as part of MyFutureSelf, to help you to support your child: • Routine. Create a daily planner with times on it, particularly if it’s a school day, with planned lessons, planned break times and planned exercise. Work with your children to develop their own plan and be prepared to compromise a little. This routine and structure will not only help their well-being but also make readjustment easier once schools/colleges return.

“Encourage them to tidy up their news feed by unfollowing or muting social media accounts that might foster negative feelings”

• Observe and discuss. Keep an eye on what your child is reading, watching and listening to. Encourage them to tidy up their news feed by unfollowing or muting social media accounts that might foster negative feelings. Discuss basic online safety including thinking about who they’re talking to and not sharing personal details. • Future-focussed. Engage your child in discussions about what they’re looking forward to doing once things return to normal. Remind them that this pandemic will pass and focus on what they would like to achieve during this time. Lastly, young people find it easier to talk while doing another activity, like cooking or drawing, and they may also prefer to write or draw their feelings down rather than verbalise them. I understand that these are challenging times and making time for these things can be difficult. After all, many of us are working from home. So at MyFutureSelf we find out what works for your young person and cater the support to them. If you feel your young person needs more support or you want to know more about what we do, please check out our website at: www.myfutureself.org.uk

Heart of Bucks is supporting local organisations responding to the coronavirus

H

eart of Bucks, the Community Foundation for Buckinghamshire, recently set up the Bucks Coronavirus Response Appeal to support charities in Buckinghamshire who are most affected and vulnerable at this time of crisis. In addition to the funds raised by this local appeal, Heart of Bucks have also received funding from the National Emergencies Trust (NET) Coronavirus Appeal to distribute locally. Both appeals and the funds generated from them are the result of generous donations from individuals and businesses wanting to make a difference at this uncertain and challenging time. Heart of Bucks have distributed over £200,000 so far in emergency funds to Buckinghamshirebased charities, organisations and community groups who are working to alleviate some of the negative impact that the coronavirus has had on the local community. Among the many local groups supported by these funds, Heart of Bucks have given grants to Aylesbury Foodbank to enable them to offer more help to disadvantaged people, Buckinghamshire Mind so they can offer online mental health support, and children’s charity Pace, so they can provide remote education and therapy to vulnerable disabled children. The Fremantle Trust used their funding to bring hope to their care home residents. They purchased a total of 41 tablets and 41 Google Chromecasts and staff have taught elderly residents how to use

ZSL London Zoo appeals for public support

Historic charity ZSL launches new fundraising campaign for its Zoo residents

B

eyond the closed gates of ZSL London Zoo, life goes on for its dedicated team of zookeepers - as the charity behind the zoo launches a new fundraiser to support the care of its 18,000 animals. Behind the scenes, devoted zookeepers - some now living on site in the Zoo’s Lion Lodge guest accommodation - observe social distancing while cleaning Penguin Beach, preparing food for the giraffes and caring for the meerkats, while the nearly 200-year-old charity appeals to the public for donations to help cover the costs. ZSL London Zoo’s Chief Operating Officer Kathryn England said: “Along with the rest of the country, we watched as this unprecedented situation unfolded around us and began making detailed plans in anticipation of having to do the previously unthinkable - close ZSL London Zoo to the public. “A core team of zookeepers, vets, security and grounds staff have stayed on site and are making each day as normal as possible for our muchloved residents, many of which are endangered species and part of important global breeding programmes.” An iconic London landmark, ZSL London Zoo closed to the public on Saturday 21 March for the first time since World War Two, immediately offering up its car park to NHS key workers and sending packages of perishable food from its Terrace Restaurant to nearby hospitals. Nestled in the heart of Regent’s Park, the Zoo opened to scientists in 1828 and to the public in 1847. Pre-dating the invention of the telephone, it’s had six reigning monarchs as its Royal Patron, and survived two world wars – closing only briefly during WWII upon instruction from the government, before being re-opened to boost the

morale of Londoners. ZSL London Zoo has been at the forefront of zoological care and learning ever since: they opened the world’s first Reptile House in 1849, the first public Aquarium in 1853, the first Insect House in 1881 and the first Children’s Zoo in 1938! Today, ZSL London Zoo is home to 582 species and is still considered a world leader in animal care and expertise, while working around the world to bring critically endangered animals back from the brink. Life has gone on behind the closed gates of the Zoo, where zookeepers have made sure to keep things as normal as possible for the Zoo’s 18,000 animals, some of which have been definitely missing the public. The affectionate pygmy goats have lined up by the gate to their home every morning since the Zoo closed, waiting patiently for the public to return. Luckily their devoted keepers have stepped up to give the pint-sized herd extra massages throughout the day instead. Over at Penguin Beach the Zoo’s colony of Humboldt penguins have been training on new scales, after zookeepers embraced the lockdown DIY trend sweeping the nation to design and build their own penguin weigh-bridges. Much like homeowners up and down the country who are using the extra time at home to get creative with their living spaces, zookeepers set about making new penguin weigh-bridges with inbuilt scales to help with the task of weighing the Zoo’s 76-strong colony of Humboldt penguins.

“ZSL needs your support to feed and care for its 18,000 animals - from majestic lions to tiny frogs”

The new scales, upcycled from materials salvaged from around the Zoo, were strategically placed at the entrance to the penguins’ coastal-inspired home, Penguin Beach, meaning that the flightless birds can be easily weighed as they waddle from the beach to breakfast each day.  And while the Zoo remained shut over Easter, the animals didn’t miss out on their eggy treats – as zookeepers put on an egg hunt for the meerkat mob. Painting fresh eggs in eye-catching colours, dedicated keepers hid the tasty treats for Frank, Dracula, Archie, Penelope, Timon, Aurora and Meko to find amongst the sand and rocks in their home.

gym for the gorillas! The area is also home to Diana monkeys, eastern black and white colobus, whitenaped mangabeys and crested black macaques.

Interactive and inspiring exhibits include:

Built on the site of the Zoo’s original Children’s Zoo - Animal Adventure retains its spirit of bringing children closer to nature through play and features open air playgrounds, a mini climbing wall and a very popular Splash Zone. Young animal adventurers can also meet the Zoo’s resident pygmy goats, kune kune pigs, llamas and donkeys as they set off on regular walks around the area, and learn about coatis, mongoose and porcupines and the unique ways they survive in their wild homes. Learning about the natural world has never been more important – ZSL can’t wait to welcome visitors back to its iconic ZSL London Zoo as soon as they are able.

Land of the Lions An Indian-themed enclosure for ZSL London Zoo’s pride of endangered Asiatic lions, designed to resemble the Gir Forest National Park in India, the last wild home of these magnificent animals. The exhibit is also home to Hanuman langurs and dwarf mongoose, demonstrating how the lions’ natural habitat overlaps with the local urban environment.

Tiger Territory London Zoo is home to critically endangered Sumatran tiger, Asim. The enclosure features a swimming pool for the water loving feline, high vantage spots for him to survey his territory, authentic Indonesian plant life and heated rocks for him to lie on in the cooler months. The area is also home to Reeves’s muntjacs, Northern whitecheeked gibbons and red river hogs.

Penguin Beach Home to a colony of lively Humboldt penguins. The 1200 sq metre pool is four times bigger and three times deeper than the Zoo’s old penguin pool. FEATURE

Calories don’t Count and Cholesterol is good for you! (Yes Really) A s a community pharmacist I’ve spent the last 35 years focused upon helping people to get the best from their medication, after all that’s what we spend all those years at university training to do. But over the last five years something dawned upon me. It seems like half the country is taking statins and the other half is taking anti-depressants (and of course many people take both!). In short we are medicating an entire society and, much as I make my living from it, it has never felt right. Now having worked a lifetime in the NHS I’m a huge supporter of it, but the trouble is we spend so little on prevention and so much on treatment. Why are we always locking the door after the horse has bolted? After all we’re not really curing anything: stop taking your statins or your blood pressure medication or your anti-diabetic medication and the problem simply comes back.... we are simply masking the symptoms. So I got to thinking what if there’s a single root cause that links many of our problems? Type2 diabetes, pre-diabetes, hypertension, dementia, cancer etc etc. After all we don’t see these problems on anything like the scale in the “primitive” hunter-gather tribes like the Hadza whose lifestyle hasn’t changed for 40,000 years. What if our problems are mainly lifestylerelated not genetically pre-determined after all? I was on a journey and a couple of years ago a couple of famous doctors, Aseem Malhotra and Robert Lustig, wrote a superb opinion piece in The Pharmaceutical Journal titled “ The Calorie and Cholesterol Hypotheses are both Dead”. You can find it at: www.tinyurl.com/rfp4ean It argued that we’ve been looking through the wrong end of the telescope, obsessing about cholesterol and how many calories we are eating (rather than the quality of our food) while the truth has been hiding in plain sight: a diet high in sugar, carbs and processed foods is driving all these illnesses. In fact I’ve recently published a response which might be of interest. You can find it at www.tinyurl.com/qwlobkg The food industry, which has conducted most of the research into diet obviously wants us to continue eating highly processed food because that’s where it makes most of its profit. And likewise the pharmaceutical industry relies on the multi-trillion-dollar statin market for a substantial part of its income. The food industry is never going to invest in trying to convince us to eat LESS food, anymore than the pharmaceutical industry is going to invest in getting us to take fewer drugs. And from all of this, over the course of five years, ProLongevity was born! www.prolongevity.co.uk

STYLE ICONS

WHO DEFINED

THE FASHION OF A DECADE

From Audrey Hepburn in the Fifties to Kim Kardashian in the 2010s, these are the women whose style summed up an era.

W

hether it’s the swinging Sixties or the minimalism of the Nineties, every decade has a distinctive style, each championed by certain

celebrities. Style icons help encapsulate everything that is fashionable from their time, while not necessarily being the celebrities who had the most out-there or unique style. Instead, they’re individuals who captured the feel and fashion of a specific era, set trends everyone wanted to follow, and are still today associated with the style of a particular decade. These are some of the most stand-out icons from the 1950s to today... 1950s: Audrey Hepburn With her sleek black Givenchy dresses, strings of pearls and big sunglasses, Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly in Breakfast At Tiffany’s is still one of the

44 JUNE 2020

“There’s no doubt Twiggy’s aesthetic sums up the 1960s: super slight, with a pixie crop and voluminous lashes”

most fashionable characters in film. By its release in 1961 though, Hepburn was already a style icon in her own right, known for sleek silhouettes with nipped in waists, strapless dresses and a love of preppy collars. It’s an aesthetic that has proved timeless, and endlessly inspiring. 1960s: Twiggy There’s no doubt Twiggy’s aesthetic sums up the 1960s: super slight, with a pixie crop and voluminous lashes. Twiggy - real name Lesley Lawson - was everything you’d want from a supermodel of the time, dressed head-to-toe in mod outfits from stripy dresses to the ever-present miniskirt (Mary Quant reigned supreme).

1990s: Kate Moss The fashion of the Seventies and Eighties was all about maximalism, but this all changed in the Nineties. Supermodel Kate Moss represented a more low-key, grungy kind of glamour, wearing a slew of jeans, spaghetti straps and barely-there slip dresses. This wasn’t an era of sparkles and sequins - instead, Moss become synonymous with the so-called ‘heroin chic’ trend: being super skinny and having that ‘just got out of bed’ look. 2000s: Rihanna Nowadays, we know Rihanna as a red carpet powerhouse, and as the creative director of Fenty, making her the first black woman to run a major luxury house under LVMH. Back in the 2000s, Rihanna was still a fashion icon, but in a very different way to today. Instead of forging her own path, she pretty much wore every trend of the decade. Red carpet events appeared to be an exercise in Noughties fashion box-checking, from low-rise jeans to babydoll dresses and lots of ruched satin. This was before Rihanna found her fashion ‘voice’, but in the Noughties, we were all copying her.

1970s: Bianca Jagger Bianca Jagger was a Seventies it-girl, known for her association with the New York club, Studio 54, which was frequented by the likes of Andy Warhol and Elton John. Jagger was often seen in perfectly tailored suits with flared trousers, showing suiting wasn’t just for men, but also played with sequins, feathers and excellent hats. Born in Nicaragua, she shot to fame after marrying Mick Jagger and was known for her glamorous, party-girl life. Arguably Jagger’s most iconic moment came in 1977, when she mounted a white horse in Studio 54 on her 34th birthday. She did so in classic style: with blown-out hair and a slinky, off-the-shoulder dress. 1980s: Diana Ross In all honesty, Diana Ross was a defining icon of the Sixties, Seventies and Eighties. She’s such a style chameleon she’s managed to adapt to each era, championing trends while keeping her own signature brand of glamour. Ross is arguably best known for her Eighties fashion though, which was full of shoulder pads, glitter and big hair.

“Back in the 2000s, Rihanna was still a fashion icon, but in a very different way to today”

2010s: Kim Kardashian Love her or hate her, you can’t deny the impact Kim Kardashian has had on fashion. There are so many trends we can thank the Kardashian/Jenner clan for, spearheaded by Kim. She helped bring bicycle shorts to the fore, along with fancy athleisure wear, skintight dresses and an obsession with neutral tones and colour blocking. Whatever she wears is watched by eagle-eyed fans and retailers - so much so, Kardashian won a lawsuit against fast fashion brand Missguided USA last year, arguing it was “notorious” for “knocking off ” the designer clothes she wore. We’re now in a new decade, which begs the question: is there space for a new style star to emerge and dominate the 2010s? Only time will tell. JUNE 2020 45

Obesity and Your Health 26.9% of men and 26.8% of women in the UK are now considered obese. 8% of annual deaths in Europe are now attributed to obesity, and recently much has been said about how COVID-19 is thought to cause more severe symptoms and complications in people living with obesity. In 2007 obesity was costing the NHS £4.2 billion a year, which is set to rise.

How can obesity affect your health? • Obesity could affect your fertility. Obesity stops men producing healthy sperm and could stop women falling pregnant. Being overweight in pregnancy can increase the risks of a miscarriage, high blood pressure, pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes and blood clots. • Obesity can increase your risk of a stroke. Being obese means there could be a build-up of atheroma or ‘plaque’ in your arteries. The plaque could eventually rupture which causes a blood clot to form in a vessel. A clot can block vessels to your heart, brain and a clot can also move along the vessels, reducing the level of oxygen getting to your organs causing damage. If this occurs in your brain, it will cause a stroke. • Obesity can increase the risks of certain types of cancer which includes colon, breast, endometrial and gallbladder cancers. • The World Health Organization (WHO) regards childhood obesity as one of the most serious global public health challenges for the 21st century. Obese 48 JUNE 2020

children and adolescents are at an increased risk of developing various health problems, and are also more likely to become obese adults.

WAYS YOU CAN TACKLE OBESITY: • Lifestyle changes tend to be far more effective than fad diets. Make small, realistic changes to your diet that you can stick to, and find enjoyable ways to exercise, perhaps building physical activity into family life or using your lunch break to take a brisk 30 min walk. • Slowly build up your levels of exercise having discussed this with your GP or a health professional first. This can start by just being more active in your daily lifestyle, for example by walking to the shops instead of driving, or climbing stairs instead of using a lift. • You can help stop your child becoming obese by managing portion sizes to ensure they are child size and encouraging regular physical activity. Children under five should be physically active indoors and outdoors every day for a least three hours. School age children should engage in at least one hour of aerobic activity a day. • If a good diet and regular exercise do not seem to be working for you. Bloods can be checked to ensure that your hormones and blood sugars are normal. Always consult a doctor before losing weight if you are obese. www.your-doctor.co.uk 0330 088 2020

Yoga for homeworkers Bad posture can wreak havoc on your spine.Yogi Meghan Shannen shows Liz Connor how to undo the damage of your makeshift home office set-up.

S

o you’ve recently become a home worker. Congratulations on finally ditching your commute and entering a new period of your life where it’s OK to wear sweatpants to the office. But for all the positives like setting your alarm later in the morning - there are some downsides too. Most notably, the backache that can come from sitting at a makeshift desk set-up for eight hours a day. Hunching over a laptop, using the sofa as desk chair, precariously balancing your screen on a pile of coffee table books... all of these actions can put pressure on your neck and spine, and there’s increasing evidence to suggest that sitting for long periods of time is bad for our overall health too. So what can be done? Well, we can start by trying to undo the damage with some anti-desk yoga; moves that can release shoulder tension and improve posture. Here, yoga instructor Meghan Shannen (@megshan.yoga) shares four key poses to try on your next lunch break.

1. Forward fold with clasped hands “This move helps to open your chest and shoulders, which counteracts the standard sitting posture we tend to hold at our desks. Start with your feet hipswidth apart and clasp your hands behind you. Pull your hands away from your lower back and focus on keeping your shoulders away from your ears. With bent knees, fold down, bringing your clasped hands overhead. Take five breaths, and then roll up slowly imagining you’re stacking your spine, piece by piece.”

2. Low lunge “Lunges are great for stretching and strengthening your hip muscles, which can help to alleviate lower back pain. To do this move, you’ll need to place your front leg at a 90-degree angle with your back knee on the mat and back toes untucked. I recommend using a yoga mat to protect your knees. Engage your glutes and actively push your the shin of your back leg against the mat. Your abs and rib muscles should also be activated to protect your back. Once you’ve found a solid foundation, lift your hands above your head, tucking your chin slightly to work the deep neck muscles. Take five deep breaths before switching legs.” 50 JUNE 2020

3. Triangle pose “This shoulder and chest opening pose is great for to stretching out your side body. Step your feet roughly three feet apart from one another. Make sure your left foot is at the front of the mat and facing forward. Line the arch of the right foot to the heel of the front foot, and raise your arms to shoulder height. From here, reach your left arm as far forward as you can, whilst pulling your right hip as far back as possible. Then drop your left hand to a comfortable position on the inside of the left leg, pushing against your shin. This should give you a nice spinal twist and chest opener. Don’t forget to switch sides afterwards.”

4. Reverse tabletop “This pose opens your shoulders and strengthens your glutes, wrists and back muscles. Start in a seated position, placing your hands behind your back, with your fingers facing towards you. Your feet should be hip-width apart. Lift to a tabletop position, making sure your shoulders are stacked directly above your wrists. You should feel like you’re pushing out of your shoulders, which strengthens the muscles. Your hips should be directly above your ankles and in line with your shoulders. Engage your abdominal muscles as you hold for five. Your neck can either be tucked or neutral, but only if you don’t have neck issues.”

Never have our homes been more important to us. But there is a distinct difference – comfort. A winter garden creates a bio-climatic environment - a natural space cooled in summer by air flow, shaded by stunning

Tap into Interiors Inspiration There are still lots of ways to get creative with your decor, as interior designer Penny Ann Johnson tells Sam Wylie-Harris.

T

he decor, pattern and colour we bring into our homes is often influenced by the things we see beyond our own four walls, when we’re out and about. Statement pieces that catch our eye, or simple style fixes like a new sofa or display cabinet to set the scene. It’s much easier to imagine how these things will sit and take shape when someone else has done the groundwork, and put all the bits and bobs together in a lovely showroom. So what does interiors inspiration look like during the #stayhomestaysafe era? Things may be very different right now, but tapping into our creative side can bring a host of benefits - for our wellbeing as well as breathing new life into our living spaces (where we’re spending a lot more time than usual!). And there’s still a realm of possibilities to explore, especially when you play around with existing household items, pick up a paintbrush, or

introduce a few key pieces available online. Here, interior designer Penny Ann Johnson of Penny Ann Interiors, who will be appearing at Grand Designs Live 2020, shows how to get creative with your interiors while in isolation... “What have you been doing with your time while we’re all confined to our own four walls? I’d imagine if you’re anything like me, you’re sat on your sofa staring at a bare wall wondering how to improve it, or thinking about how you can complete that spare bedroom you’ve been ignoring for a year,” says Johnson. “But lockdown, means limitations, things aren’t so readily available as retailers are abiding by government regulations. So here’s a few clever tips on how to have some fun with your interiors.”

Play with panelling “Panelling is a thing. It’s everywhere at the moment; Insta-worthy 3D wall panelling is a modern version of period architecture. At first it seems a little ‘off

the wall’ but in the right room, it can add great character without a lot of work. “Firstly play around with the width, pattern, orientation and height of the wall to come up with a design. Get yourself online to B&Q Homebase (use their click and car park collect service if available) and purchase some simple lengths of baton to help you create your masterpiece. “Measure your design out on the wall and secure the baton either with grab adhesive or screws. Once it’s secured, choose a beautiful colour to help emphasis the statement. Sit back and watch the shadows cast their shade and your wall come to life.” Check out angelarosehome.com for inspiration.

Create a picture wall “Picture walls are all the rage these days, a great way to fill that empty wall, show some self expression and make that space more homely. “Visit Amazon and search ‘Picture Gallery Frames’. There are some fab sets of 10-plus frames of varying sizes too, to help you create your picture wall. Have a think about what you’d like to put in your frames. “Pinterest is a great source for frame-able quotes, and these are a fab way to make the design feel more personal. Include some family photos - get them printed either via your home printer or a company like Snapfish, delivered to your door. Then get them hung, stand back and revel in the pride from seeing those important moments and people displayed beautifully in your home.” Check out posterstore.co.uk for inspiration.

Group decos and homewares “They say three is a crowd... not in the case of interior styling it’s not! Think about the styling around your home, and think odd numbers. There’s something about grouping things in threes that leads the eye to move around the display. “Some people do prefer a symmetrical look but this needs to be done expertly and with sharp precision. Where as designing with odd numbers in mind allows a little more freedom,” she adds. 62

“Think smart with some statement art. In this uncertain world we’re all living in at the moment, support the little independent companies. Check out Etsy and search ‘Prints’. There are some fantastic artists, illustrators and designers, who are still working away to help you make your homes beautiful,” she suggests. “Artwork can be one of the most important parts to a room. It’s a talking point, and offers both the purchaser and onlooker the opportunity to think and express creatively. Find something that speaks to you, and look forward to that little package arriving from the outside world.”

“Picture walls are all the rage these days, a great way to fill that empty wall, show some self expression and make that space more homely”

Consider wall murals “Get out the paint! We’re seeing a huge revival in wall murals. The idea offers such versatility to add character and personality to a room, you’d be mad not to devote at least one wall in your home to an idea,” says Johnson. “So while we’re all getting in touch with our creative sides, delve into your garage and see what old paint pots you have stashed away. Companies like Mylands can still send you sample pots of their fantastic paints (I’m a big fan) to add to your colour library, while you’re searching for inspiration. “Whether it’s a geometrical or floral design, an abstract creation or ombre fade, that wall can be anything you want it to be. Let loose and go wild, it could be the most liberating thing you do during lockdown.” Check out lilitartstore.com for inpiration.

Kutchenhaus High Wycombe:

The German Kitchen

T

he client: A couple with two boys and two dogs completely overhauled their 40-year-old home, set within the rolling countryside of Buckinghamshire which was in dire need of a modern update – 18 months later and the result is outstanding. Our designer Kayleigh, at Kutchenhaus High Wycombe worked closely with the client, shifting through pages of inspiration boards and product samples to create a raw, fresh and luxurious colour palette that is modern, but with a timeless rustic edge. The result is somewhat Scandinavian with a slight nod toward mid-century modern. In more depth, this design features our pale concrete grey doors for the tall units and sink run which has been accented with rustic wood effect cube shelves and soft sage wall units above for storage. The island is a statement alone in our unique textured stone art slate grey reproduction doors. The work surfaces are a sleek, slim 20mm white terrazzo Silestone quartz topped with an increasingly popular Bora downdraft induction hob. It can be unusual to mix more than 2 or 3 colours in one kitchen project as it can become cluttered and messy, but the large open plan kitchen diner has an abundance of soft light that floods in to the room which allowed for a more daring approach to the kitchen design. In terms of accessorising to complement their German kitchen, the entire kitchen is elegantly drawn together with bright gold accessories creating a harmonious balance between texture, tone and pattern. The customer had a lot of inherited belongings from family in Canada so we incorporated a statement open shelf system that beautifully exhibits these eclectic gems. Any kitchen design needs to be practical, but this had the added challenge of accommodating

68

for busy family life, so traffic flow management was crucial. It was essential the cooking facilities were quiet yet efficient due to the dining area being within a 2m proximity of the kitchen and located in such a position so as to avoid children crossing paths with hot oven and hob items. The customer has subsequently left us a 5-star rating on Trust Pilot and has said “Kayleigh took a great deal of time and care to design a kitchen that looks very high end, bang on trend, yet completely unique to us. The result is a kitchen that has a real wow factor but is incredibly practical. The after care was also excellent. Can’t recommend highly enough”. For many kitchen design projects, especially ones that undertake building work, at Kutchenhaus, we take pride in getting involved in the process as much as possible. We make a number of visits to ensure that the entire execution goes smoothly from design, delivery to installation. Wherever possible we love to recommend other Interior Design elements too, from soft furnishings, flooring, to ceiling pendants and bathroom tiles. Our design service is completely free, we use an incredibly high-quality design software with a realistic rendering ability so our clients can see their prospective space in high detail, not only in an image but in a 360 panorama too. Think Cranborne Chase, not Chevy Chase! BRAND Designs Ed Goldney discusses residential external lighting

S

pring provided such wonderful weather for us all during such a difficult time, and I did my best to enjoy garden time whenever possible. With the day’s tasks complete, a jumbled mix of work, cooking and home schooling, arrived a brief period of mindfulness, so no wonder it was the sunsets and evenings I appreciated most. One peaceful evening entailed spotting several satellites and two meteors which reminded me of a visit to Cranborne Chase, Dorset, earlier this year. An Area of Natural Beauty and the 14th listed International Dark Sky in the world where light pollution is low and the wonders of Stargazing can be truly enjoyed. Even with this fantastic accreditation however, they can still encounter poor residential lighting installations around the area, as can many other rural properties.

or 3000k. The blue spectrum of whiter light can also effect local wildlife’s nocturnal activities. If you are inclined to introduce colour, then this can be effective with water features and ponds. We also consider ‘dim to warm’ LED technology, put simply, the lower the light output the warmer the colour achieved.

So, here’s our fab five tips on how to achieve stunning external lighting with consideration for neighbouring wildlife, and humans alike! • Less is more…..#ChevyChaseVacation! Avoid floodlights or trying to light everything in your garden. Use darkness to provide a contrast which will enhance focal points such as entrances, water features, dining areas, steps and selected shrubs. Use dimmable fixtures to achieve the best effect as light goes a long way against the contrast of night. Security lighting can be achieved again without the need for harsh floodlights. Well placed, and controlled, lighting will still provide a deterrent whilst considering any CCTV requirements. • Layers of light – the bigger the mix, the better the effect! Create a warm welcoming environment by using variety of lighting fixtures, best suited to each task, across more lighting circuits. Consider lighting entrances, wall lights that graze down brickwork, lighting steps and feature walls. Miniature dimmable baffled uplighters close to focal points, or natural materials such as stone or oak works well as does silhouetting areas of interest for a creative flare. • The colour of light Use warm white for a homely feel, 2700k (Kelvin) 70

JUNE 2020

“Use darkness to provide a contrast which will enhance focal points” • Trees and Shrubs – Flexibility is key Growth, future planting and pruning may mean moving lighting sources to provide a better effect or reduce glare. Adjustable spike lights are therefore ideal for this. Up lighting trees is often popular but check for any planning conditions regarding uplighting. Use baffled or hooded fixtures to reduce glare and use dimmable light sources ideally with an element of smart control • Smart Control of light Manufacturers such as Lutron provide must have benefits for external lighting. Features includes holiday scheduling for security, astronomical clocks that dim and switch lighting on at dusk or other desired times. Programming to dim selected areas of your garden and the option to control your lighting from a smart phone, all from the comfort of your recliner! By using various layers of light across different lighting circuits you now have many scene options to enjoy, automated or at the press of a button. Create a ‘Dining’ or even ‘Mid-Summers Dream’ scene, where you select what lighting you want on and at what level – this really delivers the wow factor!

Tales of Morocco Warm tones can enhance a chilled-out vibe at home, says Sam Wylie-Harris

T

hese are challenging times for style hunters, especially if you’re in need of a far-flung fix and long to be somewhere else. In the new normal, souvenirs from souks, textiles and prints that draw on a mix of cultural influences, and decorative trimmings that reflect our eclectic tastes, feel as out of reach as a Moroccan riad - and wafting down a mosaic-tiled courtyard in a beaded kaftan. But while we’re social distancing, would-be globetrotters and those loving lockdown are perfectly placed to spice things up at home with warm tones of terracotta, a gleam of gold, and rich fabrics to capture a timeless, laid-back look inspired by the past, as we look forward to the future. Here’s how to introduce some sun-drenched stylish updates... “As spring creeps into summer, add touches of warmth to your scheme with terracotta reds, soft pinks and hints of gold,” says Emily Dunstan, home buyer at Heal’s. “Drawing inspiration from

the outdoors will create a comforting environment that’s gentle on the eye, perfect for a relaxing lounge area or bedroom; while blending rich, earthy tones with refined elements of brass and gold will evoke an exotic feel, bringing a sense of holiday heat into your home.”

It’s all in the detail

“Dunstan suggests weaving earthen tones into your existing palette with soft furnishings”

74

JUNE 2020

Dunstan suggests weaving earthen tones into your existing palette with soft furnishings, such as their Linie Design’s Monu Rug in rose. “Its elegant, abstract motif will add interest, whilst subtle golden detailing will catch the light and create a subtle shimmer.” For smaller finishing touches, try introducing a distinctive pattern, such as those seen on this Stones Cushion, which combines rich gold with an eyecatching print, to add a hint of nomadic luxe. And to mirror the ornate carved detailing and handmade pieces you might see in a souk, Amara’s version looks as authentic as one you might be tempted to try and stuff in your suitcase. To make a larger statement, a patterned sofa in warm hues will create a focal point within the room: “This season, One Nine Eight Five (Heal’s design studio) took inspiration from the curves of our Wallis sofa, creating an abstract design that echoes the shades of spring. and orange brush strokes alongside nude shades, this bold upholstery also includes a velvet ochre backing, drawing the eye from every angle,” explains Dunstan.

Beige and browns blend effortlessly together Bold without being overpowering, shades of spice, rust and terracotta are design staples that lend themselves to a multitude of decors, from Scandi to mid-century,” says Suzy McMahon, buying director for Sofology. “These are colours that work best when chosen to complement, rather than clash. Keep walls and furniture tonal and embrace the richness that comes from reddish oranges and rusty browns.” For a truly impactful scheme, she recommends pairing accents of saturated tones of green, black and navy. And you can enhance the look with darker metallics, such as gold and bronze, rather than silver or chrome. “Furnishing your space with upholstery in one of these versatile spiced hues will create a warm and cosy feel,” says McMahon, and the choice of material will really set the tone here. “Selecting a velvet will create an opulent, luxurious finish, whereas a linen or cotton will bring a sophisticated

yet relaxed atmosphere. Layer with throws and scatter cushions in similar shades and tactile textures, to bring added comfort and depth to your scheme.”

Make the switch to decorative lighting As Claire Hornby, head of creative at Barker & Stonehouse points out, lighting is an integral part of any Moroccan-inspired interior. As well as floor-standing lanterns with an artisan feel, and the flattering soft glow of candles, an array of rattan pendants hung at various heights will offer a nod to bazaar style, without compromising the calm vibe of the space.

Warm golds radiate warmth A cool palette of grey and deepest charcoal, backed by a wall painted in gold or mustard, offers an earthy contrast and works brilliantly in an entrance hall or fireplace surround. Team with monochrome travel prints for a glowing getaway feeling. “Terracotta and rust are colours found in nature and offer a connection to the outside world, creating a sense of calm,” says Helen Shaw, director of Benjamin Moore UK. “Incorporating rich, bold spice colours creates instant character, taking a small space from sterile to stylish.” And if you really want to luxe it up, what could be more wondrous on the wall than metallic feather wallpaper? “We may not be able to go on fabulous holidays right now, but that doesn’t stop us taking inspiration from the stunning aesthetics of Moroccan interiors,” says Alex Whitecroft, head of design at I Want Wallpaper. “The use of spicy, warm tones and pops of gold can bring a much needed heat, and create a sense of the exotic in any room. Try a splash of cobalt blue to really bring a room to life - as inspired by the incredible Jardin Majorelle in Marrakech.” 76
