COVER STORY

CREATING UNIQUE, LUXURY HOMES

E

AB Homes is an award-winning boutique development company, which builds exceptional, high-end residential properties in and around the Home Counties. For over 25 years the company has specialised in the design, development and building of bespoke, new family homes for individuals who appreciate the very best. With not one, but three International Property Awards now under their belts following a win for ‘Mulberry House’ this year, we catch up with the Directors Peter and Tonia Warren, and Jak Berridge, to talk about the finer details of their latest property, and to find out who really wears the trousers in this family business…

What was the inspiration behind the design of ‘Mulberry House’? TW: Each property’s individuality is firstly based on heritage, paying homage to the surroundings and history, whilst incorporating a nod to the future and a complimentary mix of materials. Mulberry House is a blend of contemporary and traditional styling, immediately obvious from the combination of old yellow stocks, crisp render and an on-trend grey palette. What is your favourite aspect of the front of the property? JB: Personally, the amount of glass, as it lets in so much light to the property. We also added a bespoke etched line detail to the glass in all of the window units to lift the look and feel of the house. What was your focal point when starting the interior design? TW: The heart of the home is the kitchen and every detail throughout the property stems from this design. Mulberry House is no different, and has to be my favourite kitchen to date! What are the highlights of this kitchen then? TW: Bearing in mind the aim to blend the traditional and contemporary, we paired hand-painted British shaker cabinetry with wrap-around stone worktops, and introduced contemporary Miele appliances, a Zip boiling/chilled tap, and oodles of wine storage! The unique double-island with interlocking timber breakfast bar supports not only the cooking experience, but modern family living. How do you choose who to collaborate with? JB: Our ethos is to maintain long-term relationships with suppliers. The core values we seek in any collaboration are integrity, innovation and good communication. We also love working with other family businesses and the opportunity to support other local and British brands where we can. Did you have a particular influence in mind for any of the rooms? PW: We love bringing colour into our homes, and really wanted to have some fun with this in the

2 0 J U LY 2 0 1 9

study! We decided to brighten this masculine space with dashes of yellow, and I even managed to sneak in a model of a McLaren F1 without anyone noticing! We hear we can charge our electric vehicles? PW: You certainly can, and we were very excited to be the first among the local luxury developers to install these. What’s more, we’ve also fitted solar driven Photovoltaic Panels to the property, so charging won’t cost the earth either. So there are lots of gadgets in the home then? JB: Yes, there are! There is a Savant Home Automation System installed, which can remotely control virtually any aspect of the property, from individual lighting and heating settings, to setting up entire scenes combining lighting, media, heating and security features, which bring the house to life at the touch of a button. The best thing is you can do this while away on holiday, or even on your way back from the shops! And who gets the final say on interiors?! PW: Tonia! JB: Tonia! TW: They know their place! What’s next for EAB Homes? PW: Our next development to hit the market is ‘Beechmont’ in Central Beaconsfield, it’s going to be quite special! ‘Mulberry House’ is available to view by appointment only, visit www.eabhomes.co.uk

uckinghamshire-based Firefly Events has a packed calendar, bringing wonderful films to beautiful surroundings to entertain guests on these gorgeous summer evenings. With its own unique events and also popping up at hire venues, the team is travelling around the country this summer, screening favourites such as The Greatest Showman, Bohemian Rhapsody and Top Gun, to name but a few. The venues are also just as diverse, from hotel grounds to vineyards, private Estates, golf courses and meadows.

The Walled Garden at Wormsley

One such event is being held at Wormsley Estate, near Stokenchurch in August. This intimate event, in the picturesque Walled Garden (which recently featured in the English Garden magazine), will include a champagne drinks reception with live instrumental music and a curated garden tour. The film will be screened on the croquet lawn with deckchair seating and luxury hamper included. Set in rolling countryside outside Stokenchurch in Buckinghamshire, Wormsley is a private 2,700 acre estate and has been home to the Getty Family since 1985. Wormsley is also the home of Garsington Opera, and is renowned across the world for its Library, Cricket Ground and winter Game Shoot, as well as for the natural beauty of its landscape, nestled in the Chiltern Hills.

Increasingly amongst Firefly’s customers are businesses who want to have their own private cinematic events. Co-Founder, Andrea O’Hagan explains “We have run some truly lovely events for businesses that want to bring the joy of cinema to their employees or customers. Some companies even extend the invitation to employee’s families. Movies are so emotive – often moving or funny – so it can bring people closer. I guess it’s a new slant on team-building.” Firefly Events started out as a specialist in pop-up cinema, predominantly screening outdoors, but now has just as many bookings for pop-up indoor venues. Andrea continues “We can bring our cinema to almost any venue with our wide range of equipment that suits locations of various types and sizes. Christmas is a really popular time of year for people to get together and watch the old classics like “It’s a Wonderful Life”, “Love Actually” and “Elf ”. Last year, we ran a series of Christmas films in the centre of Marlow. We sold out in record time because it was such a special treat for people to walk into town, sit in a comfy armchair, watch a film, be served drinks to their seats and eat delicious food. We intend to bring this offering to other towns in the winter months this year so watch this space.” For further information about hiring Firefly or attending a pop-up cinema event, please go to www.fireflyevents.co.uk or call 01628 302125.

Firefly Events can come to you, bringing their pop-up cinemas to private homes for parties and celebrations. Contact them for an intimate al fresco movie under the stars with friends and family in the comfort of your own house or garden. They can cater for audiences from 20-2,000. It’s not all about the film either. Firefly can provide a vast range of high quality equipment as well as the cinema, including Southesea deckchairs, bars, tents, beanbags, silent headsets and even popcorn machines to make your event truly magical.

July recipe & kitchen news

I

have taken inspiration for this month’s recipe from one of my most simplest and fondest taste memories, dashing off to the local trout farm down the road in Sheldon, Devon to bring back a fair sized rainbow trout which I cooked most simply on an ageing barbecue which we lit before setting off. With only a little olive oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper,

for me those moist, slightly smoky chunks of coral coloured flesh were heaven on earth. For this recipe I have enhanced the flavour of the trout with a little thyme and orange and paired it with a caper dressing and a simple nasturtium leaf and flower salad of which the peppery leaf works well and compliments its younger seed bud form the caper.

RECIPE: Barbecued Rainbow Trout with Orange and Thyme, Caper and Lime Dressing, Nasturtium Salad Ingredients Serves 4 • 4 medium sized rainbow trout cleaned and gutted • 2 large oranges zested • 1 bunch picked thyme • 150g soft butter • ½ bunch dill finely chopped

• 50g capers • ½ tsp Dijon mustard • 4 tbsp olive oil • 1½ tbsp white wine vinegar • 1 bunch nasturtium leaves • 1 bunch nasturtium flowers • 1 round lettuce roughly torn • Salt and pepper

Summer Lunch Tasting Offer Celebrate the arrival of Summer with Lunch at the Artichoke after some leisurely shopping in balmy Old Amersham - sample our Summer Lunch Tasting Menu, with a complimentary chilled glass of rose Lunch Tasting Offer is available from Tuesday to Friday lunchtime, until 16th August 2019 for just £38.00 per person - optional wine flight four tasting glasses @£26.00 (five tasting glasses @£30.00) **Please mention ‘Lunch Offer’ when making your reservation** (offer available for up to six guests) The Artichoke Restaurant 9 Market Square Old Amersham Tel: 01494 726611 www.artichokerestaurant.co.uk

Method 1. Begin by lighting the barbecue, always allow about 1 ½ hours or until the embers turn white before attempting to cook anything on it, anytime before this and the temperature will be too hot resulting in food burning on the outside and still being uncooked in the centre 2. Prepare the trout, trim the fins, wash and then dry, then make an orange and thyme butter simply by mixing the orange zest, butter and picked thyme, generously smear the cavity of the trout and fill with the remaining sliced orange, season well. 3. Transfer onto a piece of tin foil, approximately 20cm by 20cm and lightly oil, Place the trout in the centre and

4 0 J U LY 2 0 1 9

bring up the sides then scrunch the foil up to seal and form a parcel. 4. Place onto the barbecue and cook for approximately 15-20 minutes 5. Make a light dressing by mixing the Dijon mustard and vinegar then whisking in the olive oil, once emulsified add the capers, dill and season 6. Dress the round lettuce, nasturtium leaves and flowers To serve; Place the trout on a plate with a generous helping of salad and a glass of chilled white wine

#MentalHealthIsNotVisible Two Beaconsfield High students dance in thought-provoking film about mental health, choreographed by celebrated international choreographer, Brendon Hansford

I

zzy Swain (Year 11) and Yasmin Noble (Year 9) have been dancing since they were seven and 10 years old and joined the Brendon Hansford Youth Dance Company at Pineapple Studios, Covent Garden when they were 13. The girls were enormously proud to be part of the dance film ‘Therapy’ choreographed and directed by Brendon over a period of six months during the girls’ two-hour Saturday dance classes. The film was released on Brendon’s website and social media channels on Friday and 16-year-old Izzy dances the starring role as the school girl suffering the stigma and loneliness attributed to deteriorating mental health: “Brendon’s classes are fun and nurturing; every dancer knows it’s ok to make mistakes, in fact Brendon advocates them saying it’s the only way to learn! In September, I was incredibly proud to be chosen to play the main character in ‘Therapy’. I think the film really shows the isolation felt by those suffering with mental health issues and the school setting shows how commonplace these issues are. These issues are something we are all susceptible to.” 14-year-old Yasmin hopes the film will have the power to change people’s perception of mental health: “The rehearsals are very professional, and as dancers we are expected to behave like you would in the industry. I think ‘Therapy’ achieves two things: it shows the people who haven’t suffered from mental health issues how isolating it can be, and for those that do suffer, it‘s making the point that we need to talk more about mental health to erase the stigma attached to it.” ‘Therapy’ may have been an out-of-school project for Izzy and Yasmin, but Beaconsfield High Headteacher, Rachel Smith believes the film reflects the issues that many schools address on an ongoing basis and their Getting Life Ready (GLR) programme plays a key part in supporting her pupils: ‘The issue of mental health, particularly for young people is an extremely important one. As a school, our role is not only supporting our students, but also teaching them to ride the ups and downs

4 6 J U LY 2 0 1 9

that life throws at them. This is where the school’s GLR programme comes in; the programme gives students the core skills for surviving and thriving in the real world, including teamwork, commitment, resilience, risk taking and creativity. It is at the heart of the school’s daily operations, subtly interwoven into lessons, extra-curricular, assemblies and as part of its House competition. It is a key strategy in achieving our goal of nurturing happy, high achieving young adults.” Brendon Hansford is a celebrated international choreographer and movement specialist based in London. As well as starring in and directing the new documentary ‘Building a Dancer’, Brendon has been commissioned by many artists, events managers, theatres, creative directors, advertising giants and has worked with: Rod Stewart, Sam Smith, Rick Astley, Island Records, Renault, Panasonic, Sky, BBC, iTunes, Amazon, Google and Smirnoff to name a few. “The decision to make a film about mental health was twofold: I was chatting with the (Brendon Hansford Youth Dance) Company one day and the dancers were saying how some days they just feel rubbish but have no idea why. This led to us discussing how everyone has things that can affect their mental health, but there is a stigma attached to talking about it. We’re all happy to discuss physical ailments, but mental health is another matter entirely! Secondly, as a teen I suffered from M.E. which was physically debilitating but also isolating as I missed two years of school. When I rejoined my peers in Year 11, physically I had recovered but my mental health hadn’t caught up and I was incredibly shy, I just wasn’t used to being around people. It took until I was 18 and got the courage to take a dance class that my confidence soared! The dance film ‘Therapy’ was for me, a way of highlighting that mental health is something we are all affected by, we all have down days, but we are not alone. We just need to get better at talking about it.” You can watch Izzy and Yasmin perform in ‘Therapy’ here: www.youtube.com/ watch?v=MWOhJfDo1zs

Our designers are the single point of contact throughout the entire process from initial concept to finished installation. So, if there are any issues or questions from clients during any stage of the process, they only need to contact their designer and who will then deal with the situation and liaise with our installation team or third-party suppliers. We also work with a range of architects, interior designers and high-end developers, helping to create, high impact, visual spaces for our clients and their customers. Designed in a personal, customised

and unique way, no two designs are the same. The end result is a stunning installation which enhances the value of the property.

Our advice if you’re planning a new kitchen Researching the final look of the space you want to create is always a great way to start. Clients that bring in some imagery of a certain ‘look’ they like are really helpful in order for us to meet the brief quickly. It is also a really good idea to start early on, even though we have a relatively short lead-time of six weeks there are a lot of decisions that need to be made early on in order for the build team to complete preparatory works ahead of our installation. Appliance research is also particularly key, everyone’s needs and uses are so varied depending on lifestyle, cooking requirements and even for investment properties. Knowing which appliances you want helps us easily pinpoint locations in the design. www.john-lewis.co.uk

inspired by their early love of music and DJ culture - and genre-melting record labels such as James Lavelle’s Mo’Wax and his band UNKLE - and how this translates to the the creative world. For BEYOND THE ROAD, Nightingale and Dobbie seek to reinvent how people experience and interact with music, so it becomes an environment which visitors are free to explore. Lavelle’s UNKLE albums ‘The Road: Part I’ and ‘The Road: Part II / Lost Highway’ were richly layered and therefore ideal for Nightingale and Dobbie to deconstruct and rebuild spatially as a walk-through album experience for audiences. oon Festival, a week-long cultural extravaganza, makes its debut in the Royal Borough of Greenwich this month with an out-of-thisworld programme celebrating our relationship with the Moon. The festival, hosted in partnership with the Royal Borough of Greenwich, will showcase an eclectic programme of art, music, politics, astronomy and gastronomy – all seen through a lunar lens. The Festival celebrates people’s relationship with the Moon across time, cultures and subjects in coincidence with the 50th anniversary of the first Moon Landing. From astrophysics to mythology, politics to poetry, Moon Festival draws on humanity’s eternal curiosity for the Moon to bring Londoners together at night. Among the Moon-mad personalities appearing are: The Handmaid’s Tale author Margaret Atwood; space scientist, The Sky at Night presenter and self-confessed lunatic Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock; and London’s Night Czar Amy Lamé. Moon Festival creator Livia Filotico says she was inspired to produce the event after a vision of Londoners partying in the moonlight. “We come from different cultures, we have different ideals, different politics, but we all know what it feels like to raise our heads and look at a full Moon. The Moon allows us to use the Mayor’s words, remember that in London we don’t simply tolerate each other’s differences, we celebrate them.”

Moon Festival lands in London 19th - 26th July Events being held in honour of this celestial sphere include: 19th – 21st July: opening night and weekend The first night will consist of a Street Party (free entry until 10:30pm) and lunar market with Moonthemed music, street art, astronomy, spoken word and food – plus a once-in-a-lifetime art spectacle! Then the Midnight Moon Run (or walk) is a bespoke theatrical all-night tour of Woolwich. Don’t miss Moon in Poetry - a spoken word extravaganza and Maverick Women and the Moon, a fascinating talk headlined by Margaret Atwood.

23rd – 25th July Posh Club Late is a special night-time edition of the legendary cult cabaret for elegant elders, presented by Duckie and hosted by Amy Lamé (for over-60s – dress code Posh). Everyone’s welcome at Witches Worshipping the Moon for spellbinding memories and Wiccan history from practising witch and founder of the famed Treadwells Bookshop Christina Oakley Harrington. with Mr Ahid Abood, Consultant Plastic Surgeon

“There are so many things I enjoy about my job!

What made you want to be a plastic surgeon? I was fascinated with the broad range of techniques used by plastic surgeons and the ability to operate all over the body and treat a variety of conditions. Being able to carry out a complex reconstructive procedure and to make it look aesthetically pleasing is extremely satisfying. What do you enjoy most about your job? There are so many things! I find it incredibly rewarding making a positive change to people’s lives and I enjoy the technical challenges of surgery. I’m fortunate enough to be able to work both in the NHS and also to have my own private clinic. Each setting enables me to meet a wide range of people with very different issues. What are the most common cosmetic procedures? The most common procedures I carry out are breast enlargement, breast reduction and tummytuck surgery. This is probably a reflection of the most popular procedures in the UK in general. How should patients research their plastic surgeon? 7 0 J U LY 2 0 1 9

I’m frequently surprised by how little people have researched me before their initial consultation. If someone is considering cosmetic surgery then at the very least they should make sure that their surgeon is on the specialist register for plastic surgery which is held by the General Medical Council (GMC). In the UK, full members of BAPRAS have all had full specialist training (British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery). What do you think about the idea of going overseas for cosmetic surgery? Generally speaking, it’s a bad idea. There are some very well-trained plastic surgeons outside the UK but it can difficult to check. Other countries have different standards and systems which makes it difficult to find out if a surgeon overseas is fully trained. No procedure is free from risk and complications can occur whether your surgery is carried out in the UK or abroad. However, if you choose to have your surgery in the UK , the consultant plastic surgeon who undertook the surgery will provide you with any necessary aftercare. This kind of reassurance cannot easily be provided when travelling overseas. 0800 233 5088. referral@skinscarclinic.co.uk www.skinscarclinic.co.uk

New bed wetting clinic opens at Spire Thames Valley Hospital Ms Katy Parker,

D

id you know, around 12% of seven to nine year-olds regularly wet the bed? And for a small number (1.5-2%), the problem can continue into their teenage and adult years.* At Spire Thames Valley Hospital, we have opened an exciting project - a night-time bed wetting clinic for children. Known as “nocturnal enuresis,” this is when a child unconsciously wets the bed whilst they’re asleep. Our nocturnal enuresis service is a nurse-lead specialist clinic to help children and young people get dry at night time. Managed by Ms Katy Parker, our Children and Young People’s lead nurse, the service will be available for children aged five years and above. The nocturnal enuresis clinic will be held at Spire Thames Valley Hospital, where all appointments are available after school, so children do not have to take time off to attend. Three main reasons why children wet the bed: • Their bladders don’t stretch enough to hold all the wee they make at night. • They produce too much wee at night. • They don’t wake up when their bladder sends a signal that it’s full.

7 4 J U LY 2 0 1 9

Children and Young People’s lead nurse

There are many reasons why children are still wet at night-time, so we undertake a full assessment to design a tailored plan to suit them. We understand night-time bed wetting does not only affect the child; it affects the whole family. Bed wetting can be difficult and tiring to manage at home, so it’s important you can seek support from a specialist nurse - as parents this ensures you have all the relevant information and support to help you and your child become dry at night time. An appointment at our nurse-lead enuresis clinic will consist of a pre-assessment phone call, an information pack, an initial consultation and subsequent follow-up appointments for as long as you need them. Katy Parker is our leading Children and Young People’s Nurse with special interest in nighttime wetting here at Spire Thames Valley Hospital. As our Paediatric Lead, she is looking forward to welcoming children, young people and families into this clinic. If you would like book an appointment at our nocturnal enuresis clinic, simply call us on 01753 467616. *Data source: PCF Paediatric Continence Commissioning Guide

words: sj sandhu

in New York 2006 - the love that I have for him is beyond words. How do you balance home life with your demanding career? Like other single mothers - with difficulty! I try to give my absolute all to both, whilst not be too hard on myself when things go wrong! Where is your favourite place to be? Home in London is where the heart is - or New York! What does “you time” look like? An addictive box-set, face mask and a bar of chocolate! How would you describe your co-founder Georgia Fendley? Welsh, fierce, passionate, brilliant, and one-of-akind! What two beauty products can you not live without? • Lucas’ Papaw Balm • Maybelline Great Lash Mascara What do you tell yourself when things aren’t going so well? “Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken.” (Oscar Wilde)

mma Hill CBE is a British-born designer and is responsible for designing some of the most iconic bags in the world; Hill was accessories designer for Burberry before moving to New York, where she spent 13 years with Calvin Klein and Marc Jacobs. She became creative director for Mulberry in 2008 where Kate Moss took the prototype of her very first design. She and Georgia Fendley founded Hill and Friends in 2014 during a moment of ‘martini-fuelled madness’. The ethos of the brand is about great design, quality, ethical practice and honest price value. I had the pleasure of interviewing Emma to find out more about the woman behind the brand. Where do you draw inspiration? Anywhere and everywhere - I love people watching and have been known to run after strangers to secretly take a photo of their bag! I adore vintage, all things leopard, 70s graphics and cartoon characters like the Mr. Men or the Beano’s Minnie the Minx. What were the most memorable moments in your career and life? Being awarded a CBE, for services to British fashion by the Queen in 2012. The most memorable moment in my life was the birth of my son Hudson,

Do you have a mantra you live by? “Dream big and work bigger!” (Keith Hill - my late Father) What is the backbone of Hill and Friends? Our motto of “Fashion just got friendlier” is evident in our ‘Smiley’ logo. The bags are a fusion of quality, craftsmanship and luxury, with the appeal of a brand created for real people! We are female founded and deliberately named ourselves Hill & Friends as our bags are made with love, laughter and passion. We believe in creating cherished pieces that outlast seasonal trends. Our bags are made in England by the finest craftspeople, in a factory with a 150-year leather goods heritage, and that to me is priceless. What makes the perfect handbag? The ability to become your new BFF! What does luxury look like to you? Luxury to me is about how something is made and having something that makes you feel wonderful. Castle View Retirement Living ‘I

haven’t laughed as much in years’ exclaims a brand new resident at Castle View and that sums up the general atmosphere at Windsor’s latest retirement village. Castle View, is the brainchild of Robin Hughes, CEO and Founder of Castle Retirement Living. He is Windsor born and bred and has used his decades of experience in the retirement industry to bring to the Royal Borough the very latest in retirement living. It must be good because one of the first residents to move in was his Mum! Having visited every retirement village in the UK, Robin, also has taken many influences from New Zealand where retirement living is well established. Thousands of hours have been poured into every detail from the beautiful glass rooftop Sky Lounge to the exact positioning of the plentiful plug sockets Castle View has a 24 hour reception which provides a personal touch, care and security to residents. There is CCTV in all the communal areas including the underground car park. 1,2 & 3 bedroomed very thoughtfully arranged

7 8 J U LY 2 0 1 9

apartments are available. Details such as raised washing machines and tumble dryers, movement sensitive lighting and carousel shelving in the fully equipped kitchens make living at Castle View intuitive, invisibly aiding independence well into later years. General feedback on the wheelchair friendly apartments are ‘There is more living space than I had before’ and ‘The room sizes are the same as my house’. So what is the difference in retirement living to living in a private apartment? The key difference is being part of a like-minded, warm and friendly community. Castle View’s two bars, lounge, cafe and restaurant inspire meet ups, socialising and family and friend gatherings. No fuss, no bother everything laid on to be convenient and convivial. For it’s urban location, a 15 min walk from Windsor Town Centre and 20 mins from Heathrow by car, Castle View also has a surprising amount of garden area and outside space. Every apartment has either a large balcony for tables and chairs or patio areas on the ground floor. Pets are also welcome on the ground floor. Like everything else at Castle View the team running it have been handpicked providing a caring, friendly atmosphere with support and care on hand if required. The final comment has to be its’ name sake, the view of Windsor Castle. From the communal Sky Lounge residents can enjoy views right across Windsor and the surrounding areas and not least, the spectacular previously unseen views of Windsor Castle. It is also possible to savour these views from your apartment as the Sky Deck apartments have just been released. BEING BOLD WTH COLOUR

R

A bold two-piece suit is a must-have this season, says Katie Wright 8 0 J U LY 2 0 1 9

emember when the only people who wore suits to work were corporate career hustlers? Now though, the grey check blazer has become a style staple for women - everybody’s got at least one in their wardrobe - and suit jackets aren’t just for office workers any more. The tailoring boom continues for spring/ summer, but this time it comes with an explosion of colour too. On the SS19 catwalks, bright trouser suits in sunset shades were everywhere, from scarlet red at Balenciaga and tangerine at Roksanda, to salmon pink at Peter Pilotto and chartreuse at Emporio Armani. Saturated hues are what these two-piece ensembles all had in common, but suit cuts varied, with both single and double-breasted jackets teamed with slouchy and slim-cut trousers. There’s lots of variety on the high street too, from boxy blazers to cute cropped jackets, so you can find your new summer staple with ease. The sunny tailoring trend lends itself well to office life, of course - a hot pink suit is the definition of power dressing in 2019. But, like winter’s ubiquitous check blazer, a mustard or tangerine jacket can also come in very handy as a holiday cover-up. Equally, you can dress down a two-piece as well, by adding a vintage T-shirt and white Adidas Gazelles. It’s not just about daywear, either - take the tailoring trend into party mode by teaming a onebutton suit jacket with a lacy camisole, crop top, or (if you dare) nothing underneath at all.

For German manufacturer +VENOVO, Poggenpohl has done exactly that. As a testament to the innovation, the design has recently garnered two prestigious awards: the German Design Award 2019 and the ‘Best of Best’ ICONIC AWARD: Innovative Interior 2019. The design represents a genuine rethinking of the kitchen. Through detailed analysis, Poggenpohl identified the specific demands of the space, recognising different trends and adapting to the customer’s needs. With more people living in cities than ever before and flexibility characterising urban life, our dwellings are required to be fluid; almost the exact opposite of our past counterparts. In our careers, we frequently take on new challenges that involve relocation and lifestyle changes, so our homes need to empower this. SPACERS TILE AND WOOD FLOORING LTD

S

“When you choose to buy your tiles or flooring from Spacers you are assured that it is among some of the best available in the world…”

9 0 J U LY 2 0 1 9

pacers Tile and Wood Flooring have been supplying high quality Engineered Oak floors, Porcelain Wall and floor tiles, mosaics, glass and Natural Stone tiles to the retail and commercial sector for over 25 years. We have worked closely with our factories to produce a range of wood flooring and Porcelain Tiles that not only mirror current trends but is technically and environmentally the most advanced available. All our Engineered Oak is thoroughly tested, is EUTR compliant and SVLK certified. The top layer is genuine Western European Oak. None of it is Chinese or Siberian so you are assured of its source and quality. The ‘Core” (the important bit) is constructed of single species Plantation Hevea (Rubberwood). It doesn’t grow naturally in South East Asia so is farmed for this purpose. As the Hevea tree nears the end of its rubber producing life it is felled and immediately replaced with a younger sapling that not only uses up more harmful CO2 but also produces more rubber. The Hevea used for the core of all our wood flooring has a density similar to Oak giving our floors unsurpassed stability in all different climates and environments. Hevea will always outperform any plywood or softwood cored material found in so many cheaper alternative wood floors. The back layer construction is also a locally grown plantation pine species, which again adds to the already excellent stability of our flooring. The vast majority of our wood flooring has

undergone some degree of hand finishing ensuring a consistent high quality, high performance wood floor. This hand finishing gives each of our floors a ‘bespoke’ feel. Our ‘Antique’ finished floors all feature textures and surfaces produced entirely by hand rather than automation that gives each style a unique feel in terms of grain and colour. All of our Oak floors are treated with the specifically designed Extreme Matt Oil. Using German technology from Klump Coatings in Stuttgart these oils, as long as the floor is kept clean during installation and undergoes some form of regular basic domestic cleaning, will require no further applications throughout the floors life. Our own range of Porcelain is given the same level of commitment in its design and manufacture as our wood, reflecting our commitment to bringing our customers the best possible products available. But its not only Porcelain tiles and Wood flooring our showrooms can offer you…. We have vast displays of Natural Stone, Glass Tiles, Mosaics and wood effect tiles from most of the biggest names in the business. Not only that but we are also main dealers for Amtico and Karndean with the most up to date ‘studio design’ stands in house that display their products beautifully. When you choose to buy your tiles or flooring from Spacers you are assured that it is among some of the best available in the world….Our staff are helpful and vastly experienced and will assist you throughout the design and selection process in a modern friendly environment. PELARGONIUM POWER

Garden designer Claudia de Yong offers tips on how to make a statement with this colourful stalwart summer plant Award-winning garden designer Claudia de Yong says: “To create a low maintenance garden without compromising on colour and visual interest, look for plants like pelargoniums that can be grown with minimal aftercare, and still remain healthy and happy throughout the summer.”

She offers the following tips... Combine varieties: There are more than 500 varieties, from scented-leaf to trailing ivy specimens along with upright bushy regals. Combining different varieties together creates a beautiful, eyecatching range of colours and growth habits - even the foliage variations can be stunning. Use block colour: Choose a single colour theme and colour-block your pelargoniums to create a strong statement. Include them in borders: Pelargoniums aren’t just for pots and planters, they also grow beautifully in herbacious borders - combine with Nepeta (Catmint), Erigeron (Mexican fleabane), Erysimum ‘Bowles Mauve’ (Wallflower) or Salvia Caradonna (Balkan Clary) for bee-loving visual interest. Go vertical: Create a vertical ‘garden’ of pelargoniums by affixing pots to walls, fences or balconies - an effective way to create privacy. Take them indoors: Pelargoniums love being in a sunny spot indoors too - planting single varieties in simple terracotta pots for the kitchen table or work surface brings summer inside. Alternatively, use them as cut flowers - pelargoniums will last for up to three weeks in a vase.

A

re you looking for low-maintenance, high impact colour this summer with patio pots, beds and borders? For quick-fix glorious garden style, look no further than the pelargonium, which needs so little watering and should thrive in a sunny spot through summer and into autumn. A staggering 40 million are planted in UK gardens each year. Pelargoniums are commonly known as geraniums, but this is wrong as true geraniums are hardy, herbaceous plants which are often used as fillers in borders come June, when the perennial cranesbill geraniums act as terrific ground cover and provide great colour too. The naming problem occurred in the 17th century when the first pelargoniums were brought to Europe and were called geraniums, due to their similarity to the perennial plant, and so the name geranium stuck. Pelargoniums store water in their stems, which makes them highly versatile when it comes to planting, so be creative - disused drain pipes, chimney pots, even a wellington boot or two - these garden troopers will thrive. Planting pelargoniums into containers is among the quickest and most rewarding ways to fill a terrace, balcony or garden with vibrant colour, transforming even the plainest outside space into a feelgood oasis with a Mediterranean vibe. 9 2 J U LY 2 0 1 9

A MODERN OPEN PLAN KITCHEN TRANSFORMATION

M

r and Mrs Solomon visited our showroom after being recommended by a friend. Their project involved some building work and they were looking for a company that could

manage the complete project. “We had looked at a few other companies before we visited K&B Studios but we really wanted someone to take control and organise everything for us,” says Mr Solomon. “We took down a wall to create one big room and Sue was able to arrange this building work as well as all of the other trades involved in creating the new kitchen. Everything was managed really well, there was no wasted time and we had our lovely new kitchen within 5 weeks.” It was important for Mrs Solomon to see some real kitchens before deciding on the style of her new kitchen. She was delighted to find the Mackintosh in painted Limestone in the showroom and chose this without hesitation. The lovely calm neutral colour theme was continued with the addition of Silestone worktops in Eternal Staturario. Bringing together the two rooms meant the Solomon’s had enough space for a beautiful central island. This creates a focal point for the room, and acts as a meeting place to socialise. It also provides great functionality with an in built hob and plenty of storage. “We really love the new kitchen,” says Mr Solomon. “We get so much more use out of the space now that we have room for all the family to be in the kitchen, we can watch TV and talk as well as come together to eat. “The project was a considerable investment for us but it was well worth the money. K & B Studios did a great job, and we would be more than happy to recommend them to others.” www.kbstudios.co.uk
