Classic Ibiza with Ministry of sound AT HATFIELD HOUSE SET TO SELL-out

on’t miss this family friendly party at Hatfield House on Saturday 1st September. Following the resounding success of Classic Ibiza with Ministry of Sound in 2017, the high demand for tickets at this year’s concert at Hatfield House indicate that it will sell-out ahead of schedule. So, sign up now if you don’t want to miss The Urban Soul Orchestra, DJ Goldierocks and a host of live vocalists performing some of the biggest dance tracks from the last 20 years. The evening starts with a chill-out set where people can enjoy their picnics and a drink, or dance along as the sun fades. Then DJ Goldierocks will turn things up in the interval, getting the crowd into the mood before the USO and vocalists return to the stage to ramp things up into full, party mode. The second set last year started with Fat Boy Slim’s “Right Here Right Now” and Insomnia’s “Faithless”. The euphoric crowd responded by getting on their feet and dancing, while the accompanying lasers turned the setting into a magical, alfresco nightclub. One classic dance track followed another and the atmosphere was electric. This year’s set list will include a number of new tracks that are sure to thrill the crowd. To add to the excitement, at Easter concertgoers will be able to suggest their favourite dance anthems to be included in the programme on social media. More details of this will follow. Because of the increased capacity at this year’s concert, giant screens will be positioned around the stage to ensure that everyone can soak in

2 2 J U LY 2 0 1 8

the atmosphere. In addition to the amazing artists, what really sets Classic Ibiza apart is that it is a concert for all the family. Set in the delightful outdoor setting of Hatfield House, with easy access to transport links, concert goers can bring their own food and drink, or take advantage of numerous stalls selling high-quality street-food and refreshments. Car-parking is free (both for coaches and cars), so whether you are six or 60 you are assured of having a fantastic evening in a safe and family-friendly environment. Lisa Ward of Revival Productions commented: “We carefully plan every aspect of Classic Ibiza to ensure that everyone that attends the concert is assured of having a truly unforgettable evening. We’ve worked with the fantastic Urban Soul Orchestra for a number of years and can guarantee that they will put on an amazing show. My team’s job is to enhance people’s experience so that they want to come back for more. Hatfield has been selected this year because of its easy access to transport links, with Hatfield station being located opposite the pedestrian entrance to the grounds. In addition, we ensure that people can get on and off the site easily, can enjoy themselves in a safe environment and don’t have to queue for ages to use the toilet! Considering the amount of repeat bookings that we have received, our approach appears to be working. So, if you are coming and want to bring your family and friends along too, it’s advisable to book your tickets now.”

Pre nuptial agreements Are couples setting their relationships up for failure? Fran Hipperson from B P Collins believes not at all. While couples can be completely and utterly in love, there’s still room for pragmatism.

P

lanning your wedding is a time of great excitement. There is so much to think about – the venue, the ceremony, the dress and the honeymoon. But how many couples think about the prenuptial agreement? Understandably those two words could stop many a happy couple in their tracks before they get anywhere close to exchanging rings. Yet the reality is that more couples are considering them as a wise precaution. A prenuptial agreement should be an agreement between future spouses or civil partners, and not one person imposing what they want on the other. It can help to reduce or prevent expensive court proceedings if the relationship comes to an end. Typically, couples may decide on a prenuptial agreement where one brings more wealth into a marriage and wants to protect it in the event of divorce. Or it may be that one party already has children and wants to preserve property or monies

2 4 J U LY 2 0 1 8

for them. Having a prenuptial agreement won’t give you a cast iron guarantee on the outcome, but it can certainly affect the way the Judge applies his or her discretion when making the final award and that has to be worthwhile. More importantly prenups are more likely to help couples resolve matters amicably because they have already addressed matters before they got married. Both parties should take separate, independent legal advice to ensure fairness and that there is no duress or chance of misrepresentation. Each side must be open and honest with the other, so that if one party is giving up future rights or entitlements, they make an informed decision with all relevant information. If you decide a prenuptial agreement is for you then the time to start planning this is as soon as you decide to get married. If you wait until a couple of months before the big day, the emotion and the stress can put you both under huge pressure. And then, once it’s done, you can get back to planning for one of the biggest days of your life. www.bpcollins.co.uk. 01753 889995. enquiries@bpcollins.co.uk

Twilight Years, Trusts & Fitbits

W

ith my birthday on the horizon, and a slight twinge in my back, I have come to the realisation that time waits for no one. Gone are the days of youthful exuberance and infectious enthusiasm. These have been replaced with copious amounts of private pension material and life insurance literature. It’s as if the world is trying to tell me, through the medium of glossy A5 pamphlets, that it’s time to prepare for my twilight years. This leads me to the topic of Life Interest Trusts. One of their benefits being the safeguarding of assets from dreaded care home fees. Taking an example of a married couple with adult children would be the simplest way to explain their ‘black magic’. We will need to assume that the couple jointly own a mortgage-free property. If the husband died, the property would pass to the surviving wife. If she entered a care home and was unable to pay the care home fees, a charge could be placed on the property. Upon her death, the charge would enable the care home to claim a proportion of the sale proceeds to recoup their fees. But don’t despair as there is a possible solution! The surviving spouse would be wise to transfer the property into one of these ‘magical’ trusts during her lifetime. If the property is valued over £325,000 then an Inheritance Tax Charge of 20% would be immediately payable on the amount above this threshold. The children would be named as the 2 8 J U LY 2 0 1 8

Trustees. It is important that there are a minimum of two Trustees. They would be responsible for the Trust and named as the legal owners of the property at the Land Registry. It is possible to place a restriction at the Land Registry to ensure that the Trustees seek the parent’s permission prior to any dealings with the property. The parent would be classed as a Life Interest Beneficiary under the terms of the Trust. This enables her to remain in the property for her lifetime despite no longer owning the home. The children would be classed as the Remaindermen. The care home would not be able to place a charge on the property as the wife no longer owns it. Is that the sound of you falling off your chair? Well, kindly pick yourself up and dust yourself down as the pièce de resistance still needs to be delivered. Upon the wife’s death, the property would pass to the children without the need of a costly Grant of Probate. I had intended to treat myself to a Fitbit for my birthday to combat the slowing down of my metabolism. However, setting up a Life Interest Trust may be gift that keeps on giving! Nasturtium flowers and leaves add the addition of a radish like heat and a cooling passion fruit dressing and fresh basil finishes the dish. The skill lies in the sourcing of the best flavoured tomatoes. A heritage (or heirloom) tomato is generally considered to be a tomato variety that has been passed down through several generations, which means the seeds are pure and untouched of chemicals. Hence, the

tomatoes provide a superior flavour. The Isle of Wight has become renowned for its Heritage tomatoes – grown on organic soil, the earlier summer sunshine sweetens the fruit and brings out the fragrant flavour. There are many different varieties all shapes and sizes and colours from tones of red, green to orange, yellow and striped which make for a delightfully looking plate. Look out for these special tomatoes at farm shops and a lot of the foodie supermarkets now have them on their shelves. If the Isle of Wight variety are not available the English are now mid-season just as good. Enjoy this light summer dish with a glass of crisp white wine on your patio or balcony and take advantage of these balmy summer days.

How do you split luxury assets in divorce? Dividing personal possessions in a divorce can often cause conflict, and hobbies and luxury assets can be more complicated to split amicably. Family lawyers at Royds Withy King highlight issues that need to be considered when going through a divorce.

I

n the large majority of cases, a divorce is settled reasonably amicably by agreement. The house, the dog, any savings, and the responsibility for raising children can be agreed without having to resort to the courts. But when considerable amounts of money are involved, a divorce naturally becomes more complicated. If you or your partner have a passionate hobby, perhaps keeping horses or a valued collection such as wine or classic cars or luxury items such as yachts and planes, divorce can lead to bitter arguments when both parties want to keep those assets. When negotiating a financial settlement as part of a divorce, the parties should give full disclosure of all assets over £500. This will include clothes, jewellery, and of course, collections, hobbies and luxury items. All assets are put into a pot to be shared. There are many ways to divide belongings and luxury assets. Couples can pick and choose items that they wish to take with them, or the pot can be equally divided. Often, couples will create a wish list of things that they would particularly like to keep hoping that their partner will agree. When they cannot agree, it is the courts’ unenviable task to

decide who gets what. Where substantial amounts of cash or investments are involved, that decision may be a little easier as those assets are far more straightforward to divide. The husband with a treasured Ferrari or Lamborghini, for example, may be able to keep the car with his estranged wife taking a cash equivalent. And then there will be assets where it makes little sense to divide equally. Take, for example, a wife who enjoys riding and keeping horses, an interest not shared by her husband. A divorce settlement may quite sensibly leave the wife with the horses. The courts will also look at the lifestyle maintained during a marriage and the divorce settlement may, if sufficient assets are available, include an ongoing maintenance grant to allow that lifestyle to be maintained. It may well be that as a result of dividing assets, there is not enough left in the pot to allow one party to maintain a stable of horses or sports cars. Then, the courts will be asked to decide, taking into account other family expenditure and income, whether there is enough left to keep these luxuries. It is wise to take advice if you are unsure as to how assets could be divided with your spouse if you are contemplating a divorce. Cost effective, pragmatic and expert help could save you significant amounts on contested financial proceedings and may help you achieve an agreement without the need for court. Top tips for choosing your perfect wedding venue

Choosing your wedding venue is one of the first, and one of the most important, decisions you’ll make when it comes to planning your wedding, so you want to get it right. Audrey, of Sapphire Weddings and Events, a High Wycombebased wedding and events planners, offers her advice on the factors to consider before making that all important booking.

Location

Timings

You don’t have to get married in the area where you live but do take into account how easy it will be for your guests to get to the venue and stay onsite, or at least nearby. If you have a lot of international guests, the venue’s proximity to an airport is important. Will you want your ceremony, reception and evening party to take place in one place? If not, how do you plan on transferring guests between venues?

If you have to get married on a specific date at a specific time then you may have to book way in advance, especially if you’re hoping for a peak, summer season date. It’s not unusual for couples to book their venue a year or 18 months before their wedding day in order to get their chosen date. Unless you’re willing and able to be flexible, you will need to take this into account.

Budget

Whether it’s the first or fifth venue that you see which steals your heart, when you find ‘the one’ always visit it again – more than once. On the second (or even third) visit, ensure you’ve still got that ‘feeling’; talk to as many staff members as possible and ask all those questions you forgot to ask on the first visit. If the venue is hosting a wedding fair, try to go along and see it all dressed up and full of people. You’ll also get a sense of how pleasant the staff team is with guests. If you’re still hooked, now’s the time to start discussing deals! Visit www.sapphireweddingsandevents.co.uk to find out more about Audrey’s wedding planning services.

Set your venue budget early on to help narrow down your choice. It’s a good idea to call your long list of venues and ask about costs so you only view those in your price range. Your guest list will impact on your budget - the more people you invite, the higher your costs will be. Clarify any hidden costs before you sign any contracts. If you know you’re going to have a lot of guests or your favourite venue is edging towards the higher end of your budget, it’s worth asking about off-season or weekday rates.

Theme Do you prefer a rustic country-garden or more of a modern marquee? Your chosen venue will directly influence the theme of your wedding so if you’re into vintage charm more than contemporary glamour, shortlist your venues accordingly. What type of cuisine would you like to serve and is the venue able to accommodate this? Can you choose and use your own suppliers? Are you able to have your favourite live band play? You may love the idea of bringing the day to a close with fireworks but does the venue allow this? A lot goes into setting the theme of your big day and the venue plays an important role in this – be sure to ask a lot of questions! 3 4 J U LY 2 0 1 8

EQUINE LIFESTYLE from PENN ROAD STUDIO

J

acqueline Ferguson of Penn Road Studio has now moved into Equine photography. “I am really excited about my latest work. This year I have spent a considerable amount of time in the New Forest developing my existing family portrait photoshoots to incorporate the beauty of equine elegance.” Her reputation precedes her and she is now widely known for her original, creative, and beautifully composed photographs of families, both with & without their animals. Her passion for photography and the equine world makes her capable of capturing emotional and dynamic photographs of horses. As a professional photographer offering photography for both individuals and equine professionals she captures the unique bond between humans and their equine partners to create memories that will last a lifetime, creating outstanding portfolios for equine professionals including breeders, vets, and trainers. Jacqueline is keen to publicise, to all horse and pony owners that this is a new, innovative style of photography that includes not only a portrait of your horse, but also the emotional connection between horse, owner and their whole family. Included in the service, Jacqueline visits your stables, yard or livery, acquaints herself with the environments and people, before investing time introducing herself to the horse, with a view to drawing the best out of them all during the shoot itself. She then concentrates absolutely on the art of her skill. The images are created with a promise of quality and the words of her clients are very encouraging: “One of the best horsey days we have spent together as mother, daughter and grandmother. We

are so excited by the photos and the portfolio box is a coffee table favourite.” “Jacqueline is incredible, I would recommend her absolutely as it makes such a difference when your photographer understands the equine breed, their flattering positions and the emotional connection shared between the owner and their horse. Previously “Jed” was so uninterested yet Jacqueline managed to get his attention, capturing sumptuous photos of him! She is patient, friendly and really so much fun to be with. It was a great experience and we were right to choose her.” These endorsements make her even more determined to achieve her ambition of photographing the Queen on horseback in Windsor Great Park, having photographed her previously at a private commission within the exclusive Cavalry and Guards Club. Here Come the Girls R

WORDS: Michelle Benato

umour has it that British children are less active than ever before, but take a stroll down to Beaconsfield Cricket Club on a Friday evening or a Sunday morning and you’ll witness a scene that belies the national trend. Particularly impressive is the number of girls in evidence, a five-fold increase since last season, the result of concerted efforts by the club to ensure that cricket is seen as an option for everyone. With around 80 girls now joining in the fun, Beaconsfield are bucking a national trend that shows girls shunning traditionally ‘male’ sports due to lack of confidence. Despite the increasing numbers, girls’ cricket coach, Gary Partridge, insists there is more to be done. “With England women winning last year’s World Cup, girls are beginning to accept cricket as a game they can get involved with”, says Partridge. “We’re working hard to make sure the local community knows that we have a strong girls’ section and that we’re happy to welcome all levels, from complete beginners to county players.” Beaconsfield CC, a not-for-profit club run by volunteers, enjoys a close relationship with local community groups, making annual donations of £3,000 to schools in the area from the proceeds of their fireworks display, the largest event in the

4 4 J U LY 2 0 1 8

town’s calendar. This year saw club Chairman, Graham Daniel, present cheques in a number of school assemblies, enabling him to talk to pupils about the game and what the club has to offer. One girls’ school has even used the donations to engage cricket coaches to run cricket sessions in PE lessons, enabling them to offer the sport for the first time. With almost 400 colts and girls, youth membership is the largest the Beaconsfield Cricket Club has seen in its 193 year history. We asked the club, what makes it such an attractive proposition for children and their families? “Take a look around” says Graham Daniel, “there’s a fantastic atmosphere, the children are having fun and there’s absolutely no pressure. Meanwhile, the parents are relaxing at the clubhouse with friends and the BBQ is sizzling, whole families are enjoying time together.” The scene is certainly far from reminiscent of the cold, rainy evenings that many parents encounter at the side of a netball court or a rugby pitch in the winter months, this is a far more civilised experience altogether. Whether playing or watching, Beaconsfield Cricket Club is a delightful place to spend long summer evenings and sunny weekends. For more information visit @beaconsfieldcc on Facebook

H Re Invention Allow me to “Re-Introduce” myself, I’m a local Mum with a background in fashion publishing and music. Now I’m embarking on a new adventure, my Interior and design business. I have grown up in Gerrards Cross and seen our area change over the last 30 years. I’ve also had the privilege of reading and watching Life Magazines grow into established local go-to magazines for our area, now I am honoured to be able to write for them too. ere I am again, wondering which way to go? Crossroads, can I go back? Can I have the life I used to have? If I go back back will I cope? Or will they look at me as if to say “she can’t keep up, look at her!” Frozen in a world of nowhere and everywhere, watching the rest of the world pass me by and feeling like I have no connection to it anymore! How life can change in 9 months! Yes, becoming a Mum turned my world upside down and inside out and three children later, I was even more lost and confused than I was first time around! As time went on I lost a little more of myself/ confidence/ esteem/ power/ faith (in me). I became a shell, running on empty keeping the routine going because that’s all I knew, a hollow existence. I remember speaking to my girlfriends and saying “I need to do something; I’m going to start my label”, who was I kidding. Every time I picked up my design book and pen, my mind went blank. Designing, something I could do with my eyes closed, became my enemy, I’d lost my best friend, me. So I took a long hard look at myself and decided things “need” to change. “Ok you, what needs to stop, get that sorted out first, close that door”, done. When I closed the door that was causing me so much frustration and self loathing my world “filled” with so much light and opportunity that I was so overwhelmed. I took back my power day by day and I’ve not looked back since. Step by step I started to piece myself back together. I understood what was important to me now. Being a Mum, getting my head back in order and doing it for myself. Doing it for myself means that I get a creative outlet which feeds my soul from within, gives me the space and time to allow me to breath. This in turn started giving me the knowledge and power to “know I’ve still got it”. My whole persona started to change, the more I opened up my heart and mind to new adventures, and experiences the more I wanted it, I was “hungry”. Being a Mum is amazing and I love my children, but I love myself more. Oh if I could see the look on your face! The more I got lost in being a Mum and the monotonous routine of it all the more I wanted to escape. Having my own outlet to do what “I want” has

given me my sanity back, calmed me down, allowed me to enjoy being a Mum again, and made me a better wife again. And now. I’ve got a chance to start my own business in Interiors, to write for two different publications, an opportunity to do some fashion work too. I’m a little kid in a candy shop! I’m having a blast, meeting all these wonderful, talented people that see me and can connect with me and me with them. But, the biggest part of my “Re-Invention” has been this. Writing. Never in a million years did I think this was how my self re-invention would start. To be honest I’ve found writing to you and sharing my life experience(s) with you mind blowing in so many ways, and the doors it’s opened for me and is still opening for me is phenomenal. All I know is fashion, what do I know about writing; nothing! But something deep down inside me told me that this was the way forward and would eventually join all the dots together for me. Ladies don’t think this journey of re-invention happened overnight, its taken me the best part of 10 years to truly realise what works and what doesn’t work for me. Yes, fashion was and still is a part of my life but with all that life is now, I know I couldn’t go back to my old life of photo shoots, parties, fashion weeks, travelling and working all the hours God sent. I loved it, every minute and I won’t forget how it has shaped me and all the experiences it gave me. But, Re-Inventing myself has also been “mind blowing”, and has made me realise that I can have a little bit of everything. I can’t wait for everything that’s going to happen, as long as I keep myself true to myself I know I’m going to be “amazing”, and who knows where all of this is going to take me. I just want you to know its okay to mix it up, its ok to doubt yourself, to be frozen and hollow and unsure of yourself and completely scared. In some crazy way it means that you’re going to fight for yourself and become a heightened version of you, and what can be wrong about that? STOP, BREATH, LOOK. Until next time Ladies, thank you for allowing me to share. Sj x All images Copyright Sharanjeet Sandhu

n an age of internet shopping and “click and collect”, is the expectation of customer service lower than it ever has been? Its seems today when walking into a shop you are expected to know your size, the exact item you are looking for, where it is in the store and if it will fit when you get the chance to try it on. Then if they don’t have your size more often than not you are told to “look on the website”. Don’t lose hope there are still places that treat customer service as a priority, but what should you expect? Customer service is the experience that the customer has during the entire event of shopping in store, from the moment they arrive to the moment they leave. Being offered tea or coffee, to getting the correct advice on size, fit, colour and style. It doesn’t have to be something so obvious but offering alterations, free postage or ordering in an item that’s not in stock at the time that helps make the shopping experience as effortless as possible. So to answer the question “Are you being served?” It really does depend where you go but you can still find places that will make your shopping experience a pleasure. Is vasectomy the right move for you?

D

on’t know where to start? A vasectomy is an important decision and it’s advised that you carefully consider the procedure by doing your homework and discussing it with others who may be involved in the decision. That’s where we come in, we’re here to provide you with some key information and support you through the procedure, if you decide it’s for you. What is a vasectomy? A vasectomy, also known as male sterilisation, is a surgical procedure resulting in a permanent form of contraception for men which is more than 99% effective. It’s a relatively quick and painless procedure, usually performed under local anaesthetic and in most cases you’ll be able to return home on the same day. Does a vasectomy protect me from sexually transmitted infections/disease? The long and short of that question is no. Although it’s a form of contraception, a vasectomy doesn’t protect you from contracting or passing on sexually transmitted infections/diseases. Will it affect my sex life? It doesn’t affect your ability to enjoy sex nor your sex drive. You’ll still have erections and ejaculate, but your semen will no longer contain sperm. Sex can resume as soon as it is comfortable for you to do so. However, another form of contraception must be used for at least 9-12 weeks after the procedure to allow full clearing of any remaining sperm in your tubes.

5 4 J U LY 2 0 1 8

Is it possible to reverse the procedure? Although a vasectomy reversal is possible, if this is a burning question in your mind it’s unlikely that you should go ahead with the procedure. You should only have a vasectomy if you’re certain you don’t want any more children or don’t want children at all. Some men choose to freeze their sperm before treatment and this could be an option for you. Is this solely a personal decision? Of course, it’s your body and the ultimate decision lies with you. However, it is hugely important that if you’re in a relationship, you make this decision together. The consultant shouldn’t be the first person you talk to about this procedure. It is advised that you take time to think this decision through before visiting an urologist. I feel a little embarrassed – is the procedure awkward? Although it’s cliché, and you hear it often, it’s true – urologists see this day in, day out so there is no need to feel overly embarrassed or awkward. It is a short, 15 minute procedure, and although you shouldn’t feel any pain due to the anaesthetic, the consultant won’t be focusing on your rosy cheeks so there really is nothing to worry about. Once the deed is done Although mild discomfort, swelling and bruising of your scrotum is expected for a few days after a vasectomy, recovery is often swift and many return to work within a day or two.

Are You Considering DERMAL FILLERS? DERMAL FILLERS: The what, where, how, when and why?

D

ermal fillers are a non-permanent cosmetic injectable treatment which can effectively treat some of the deeper underlying signs of ageing, such as lines, wrinkles, loss of volume, jawline sagging and under-eye bags. The most commonly used fillers today are largely composed of hyaluronic acid (HA), a sugar molecule which occurs naturally in the body. HA is found in abundance in our skin, cartilage, joints and the fluid in our eyes and is the most water-loving molecule known to man. Around 1/3rd of our total HA is made and broken down daily, and as we age our bodies’ natural ability to regenerate HA slowly decreases. With our advanced understanding of your facial anatomy and the ageing process, we take a full-face approach to your treatment, rather than the old-fashioned method of merely ‘chasing lines’. Our patients receive compliments on how well they look, rather than being asked if they have had ‘work done’.

THE DETAILS To find out how you could benefit from treatment, please contact S-Thetics on 01494 670990 or info@sthetics.co.uk S-Thetics Medical Aesthetic Clinic, Marlborough House, 45 Wycombe End, Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, HP9 1LZ P. 01494 670 990 E. info@sthetics.co.uk www.sthetics.co.uk

Here are 8 steps to help you on your facial filler journey: 1. The reason: Consider WHY you want to have a facial filler treatment – how is it going to benefit you? 2. Research: Do your research before booking a consultation. There is lots of information online, but if you can contact someone who has previously undergone treatment, even better! Visit www.this-isme.com to read more about real life experiences. 3. Location: An important yet regularly dismissed aspect. A clinical setting is crucial for proper lighting - do not let someone inject you in a sitting room. 4. Qualified practitioner: Finding a qualified practitioner is vital to ensuring a safe treatment. Ask your practitioner about their qualifications, and preferably only continue treatment with a qualified doctor, nurse or surgeon. 5. In-depth consultation: Ideally, this should be at least half an hour, and your practitioner should record your medical history, any known allergies and discuss any safety concerns associated with treatment. 6. Clinical assessment: A good practitioner will undertake a detailed facial assessment before

starting any treatment. They will advise on the best areas to treat and give you an idea of a realistic finishing result. 7. Treatment planning: You should receive a personalised treatment plan to reach your goals, because, after all, no one size fits all. At S-Thetics we use a full-face approach, done gradually so that all areas are gently addressed to create refreshed and natural-looking results. 8. Aftercare support: Prior to treatment, ensure you will have access to aftercare support. This will allow you a more relaxed treatment journey, with your practitioner on hand to address any queries or issues that you may have. Following these eight simple steps will help to ensure you have a safe and stress-free treatment journey. Miss Balaratnam, medical director of S-Thetics, is a fully qualified surgeon and cosmetic doctor and holds the prestigious title of “Local Country Ambassador” (LCA) for Allergan, the manufacturers of BOTOX® and the Juvederm® Vycross and the latest Juvederm® Volite range of fillers. Whether your goal is to improve your skin health, reduce fines lines and wrinkles, sculpt your body by removing stubborn pockets of fat, or simply to look less tired, our multi-award winning, surgeon-led clinic has a customised treatment plan for you. We believe the fundamental basis of a successful aesthetic procedure or skincare treatment is a good quality consultation with a skilled, qualified practitioner who fully understands your needs, and looks at your treatment as a journey, not a one-off event.

During your in-depth consultation, you have the opportunity to highlight any areas concerning you, whether these are skin conditions such as acne, pigmentation or rosacea, or worries about signs of ageing and a desire to rejuvenate your skin. Your skin will then be analysed by a state-of-the-art 3D digital skin imaging system called the VISIA, which takes surface and sub-surface images of your skin and develops a detailed complexion analysis.

Then we tailor a treatment plan designed around your needs, goals and lifestyle.

Feeling Flushed? Rosacea - the skin condition that affects over 415 million people around the world. With many people still unaware they might be effected by the condition, Skin Specialist Petrina Nugawela gives us the down-low on what to look out for and what to do if you’re suffering with rosacea.

R

osacea is a chronic skin condition, primarily affecting the facial area. It is commonly characterised by skin flushing and redness. Rosacea tends to be more common in people with fairer complexions, particularly those who are prone to blushing, and it’s also found to be more common in women although men who have the condition tend to suffer from more severe cases. The cause of rosacea is still not fully understood, some believe that the defect lies in the blood vessels which dilate too easily and whilst it does tend to run in families, there is no real evidence that the condition is hereditary. There are various factors that seem to make rosacea worse, although they vary from person to person, for instance alcohol, strenuous exercise, stress, sunlight and even spicy food. There are no official lab tests required for rosacea, it is simply diagnosed by looking at the skin making it increasingly important to know what signs to look out for. Petrina explains “Early diagnosis and prompt treatment will give the best results and can even halt the progress of the condition. Rosacea starts with a tendency to blush and flush easily, if it progresses the face will start to maintain this redness and the skin will have a constant and

AFTER

deeper flush. As it progresses further, small blood vessels (telangiectasia) and small red coloured bumps (papules) begin to appear. In more severe cases, the condition can result in swelling and start to have an effect on the eyes”. The flushing that rosacea brings can make this a particularly difficult condition to live with, causing a bright red colour on the face which can be embarrassing for some. Whilst make up can go some way to help it is not a long-term solution and doesn’t provide relief from other symptoms, so what are the go-to solutions for this condition? Laser and IPL treatments have been found to be extremely effective in combating rosacea. “By treating the broken capillaries and veins we can successfully reduce redness and keep the condition under control. We use the industry-leading M22 Laser and IPL system which successfully treats rosacea along with many other skin conditions”. There are also topical treatment options which can help to soothe the skin, reduce redness and restore and strengthen your skin’s protective barrier. “We have highly effective skincare options for all skin types, our favourite ranges for rosacea include Obaji, Zo, Jan Marini and Kleresca®. “Treatment plans differ between patients and so a course of action is determined during consultation, a typical treatment plan would be a minimum of 3 laser treatments 5 weeks apart (5 treatments for more severe cases) and skincare products for maintenance with top up treatments when needed. Early treatment of this condition is highly recommended and so we strongly advise anyone who feels they may suffer from rosacea to have their skin assessed, particularly if you are suffering from redness on the cheeks, nose, chin or forehead with small visible blood vessels or bumps on the face”.

A perfect smile Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign not only controls the amount of movement per aligner, but also the timing of the movement. So, at each stage, only certain teeth are allowed to move, as per the Invisalign treatment plan for that particular stage. This results in an efficient force delivery syste that moves teeth into the desired prescribed position. What are aligners made of and what do they look like? The virtually invisible aligners are made of strong medical grade thermoplastic material, uniquely developed for the Invisalign System. The aligners are custom-made for you and t snugly over your teeth.

Hello Life Readers, Sorry it’s been a while since I have done this Q&A column but work and kids take over your life and time slips by :) This month I thought I would talk about Invisalign orthodontics which is becoming very popular with teens and adults. What is Invisalign? Invisalign is the virtually invisible way to straighten your teeth and achieve the smile you’ve always dreamed of. Using advanced 3D computer-imaging technology, Invisalign depicts your complete treatment plan based on your Invisalign Provider’s prescription, from the initial position of your teeth to the final desired position. Then a series of clear aligners are custom-made for your teeth – and your teeth only – to move them little by little. Each aligner is worn for 1-2 weeks before being replaced by the next in the series, gradually moving towards the projected final position. Your Invisalign treatment time will be determined by your Invisalign Provider, based on your specific needs. What are the benefits of Invisalign? Invisalign aligners are nearly invisible. No one may even notice that you’re wearing these virtually invisible aligners, making Invisalign a seamless fit with your lifestyle and day-to-day interactions with others. Invisalign aligners are removable giving you the flexibility to eat and drink what you want during treatment by simply removing the aligners. And you can also remove the aligners to brush and floss as you normally would for fresh breath and to maintain good oral hygiene. Unlike traditional fixed braces, there are no metal brackets or wires. This means that in most cases less time is spent in your Invisalign Provider’s practice for adjustments. And finally, Invisalign allows you to view your 6 6 J U LY 2 0 1 8

virtual results and treatment plan before you even begin treatment so you can see how your teeth are expected to look when your treatment is complete. Is this a new way to straighten teeth? Dentists or orthodontists have, in the past, successfully used removable appliances for years. But with the application of Align Technology’s 3D computer technology and mass-customisation, the Invisalign System can be used to treat a wide range of patients who wants straighter teeth. The unique ClinCheck® software allows patients to see their treatment plan from beginning to end even before the start of treatment. How many patients are being treated with Invisalign? More than 4 million patients worldwide have been treated with Invisalign. The number of Invisalign smiles grows daily. How much does Invisalign cost? As with other types of orthodontic treatment, the cost of Invisalign is dependent on the complexity of your issue and your course of treatment. As a general rule the cost is comparable to traditional fixed braces. And, although only an Invisalign Provider is able to fully determine your cost, prices for Invisalign treatment are generally between £2,500 -£4,500. However, if only minor tooth movement is required, prices could start from £1,500. How do I get started with Invisalign? Make an appointment with Rosebank Dental for an initial consultation. How does Invisalign work? Invisalign aligners move teeth with an appropriate placement of controlled movement on the teeth.

What is the minimum age of a patient that a doctor can treat with Invisalign? With experience, an Invisalign Provider can use Invisalign to treat malocclusion for a majority of adults and adolescents who want a better smile. For teenagers, talk to your Invisalign Provider to see if Invisalign Teen may be the right treatment option for your child. How long does the Invisalign treatment take? The total duration of treatment depends on the complexity of the treatment and is generally comparable to that of traditional braces. Typically treatment can last between 3 and 18 months. During your consultation, your Invisalign Provider can provide you with more detailed information. Is the Invisalign treatment painful? Some people may experience temporary, minor discomfort for a few days, at the beginning of each new stage of treatment when they insert a new aligner. This is normal and is typically described as a feeling of pressure. It is a sign that the aligners are working – moving your teeth gradually, helping you to achieve the final results. This discomfort typically goes away in a couple of days. Are there certain dental conditions that automatically exclude someone from being an eligible patient? Only your Invisalign Provider can determine if you are a good candidate for Invisalign treatment. Can Invisalign close gaps? Yes. Spaces between teeth are generally easy to close with Invisalign. Consult an Invisalign Provider to determine whether Invisalign is suitable for you. Please call us if you would like a free consult to see if Invisalign treatment is suitable for you and mention Life Magazines when calling. But if you’re looking for a traditional armoire to command attention, the Wooden Vintage Wardrobe is a fine example of an original colonial wardrobe made by expert craftsmen from solid teak. So, whether you are aiming to create a rustic farmhouse feel, or add an antique touch to an industrial space, you are sure to find something special to make a striking statement at Scaramanga. Scaramanga’s old, vintage, retro and antique wooden storage cabinets and cupboards are not new or made to look old. They may have small marks and scratches on them, which are consistent with their age and original use, which adds to their unique character and appeal. www.scaramangashop.co.uk

fabulous storage solutions

Storage is key to a clean uncluttered kitchen. K&B Studios designer Sue offers her advice on her favourite storage options for your new kitchen.

O

ne of the most common requests from homeowners when we start to design their new kitchens is, ‘more storage please’. Clever, practical storage is key to a sleek, un-cluttered space and luckily there is a wealth of fantastic products to keep everything in the kitchen organised and easy to access. Our Mackintosh kitchens offer quality storage solutions from leading supplier Kessebohmer. Kessebohmer storage solutions provide stylish, practical and functional solutions. In addition to brilliant functionality, Kessebohmer storage solutions offer exclusive design and a high quality finish. Internal cabinet space is used more efficiently than conventional systems, helping you get the most out of your Mackintosh kitchen. Take this Tandem solo for example. A superb pull out larder that stores masses of items and everything is on view for easy access. It is a simplified solution with the characteristic opening experience of all Kessebohmer fittings where all elements are linked in a smooth flowing movement. The tandem solo mechanism is available across all Mackintosh ranges on 600mm wide larder unit heights in both 2117mm and 2297mm heights. Or why not consider a pantry? Pantry cabinets are back in fashion and are a great way to keep lots of kitchen essentials to hand. There is usually shelf space for juicers, blenders, coffee machines and other small kitchen appliances. Drawers can be used to store different things depending on which insert is chosen, pans, spices or even fruit and vegetables. Shelving on the inside of the doors provides an ideal space for spices and condiments as they are all on display, no more taking everything out of the cupboard to find what you are looking for! With dedicated spaces for wine bottles and plates, this pantry is a practical and functional addition to your kitchen. These are just a couple of my favourite products. At K&B Studios we have a wide selection of storage options for both modern and traditional kitchens, why not call into the showroom and discuss your own kitchen storage solutions soon. 43/45 Mayflower Way, Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, HP9 1UG 01494 677727. sales@kbstudios.co.uk www.kbstudios.co.uk

Light-up your outdoor space

H OUSE & GARDEN

When you spend time outdoors, entertaining your family and friends, you’ll need adequate lighting to illuminate your outside space

W

hether you’re sitting outside on your patio area, or you wish to place a spotlight on specific areas of your garden, outdoor lighting can serve these purposes. You have a variety of options to suit your individual tastes, the size of your outdoor space, and its purpose. It’s important to consider what you need and how you will use the lighting, and with so many benefits to outdoor lighting, you can add beauty, function and safety to your outdoor areas.

Primary points to deciding on your outside lighting are: 1.SAFETY Use a combination of uplights as well as lights installed on outdoor structures to illuminate your seating areas effectively. Outdoor lighting can add safety in a variety of ways. Light pathways to ensure that people navigate these areas safely. Use zone lighting to illuminate areas of your garden and landscape for night-time use. Zone lighting can be effective for lighting your patio, swimming pool or outdoor seating area. Illuminate driveways, garages and entryways to keep your outdoor space safe after dark. The more lights, the safer your outdoor areas will be.

2. SECURITY A well-lit driveway and garden presents a feeling of security and maintenance. When you keep your outdoor areas illuminated, you present a feeling of care and involvement. Install lights with motion detectors so they illuminate when motion activates them. A dark garden can be splashed with bright lights when someone walks through – this can be helpful to deter would-be criminals from trespassing

on your property.

3. COMFORT Extend your living area into your garden, particularly if you entertain outdoors on a regular basis. If you have a patio with seating, add comfortable and attractive lighting to enable you to use these areas after dark. The ambience of outdoor seating can be pleasant and inviting, especially when you feature attractive outdoor lighting that adds to your outdoor decor. Use a combination of lights installed on outdoor structures to illuminate your seating areas effectively.

4. DECOR Showcase and highlight specific areas with decorative lighting. By installing lights around your garden in various spots, you pull the eye to these areas and display them attractively. Lighting can be a wonderful way to display planting areas or flower gardens. Install mood lighting along outdoor buildings to add pleasant splashes of light. You can even add low-voltage exterior lights to trees and shrubs outdoors to illuminate planting areas and add beautiful accents to your exterior areas.

5. KERB APPEAL A well-lit home presents a cared-for impression to your neighbours and visitors. Your house will appear warm and inviting, and in contrast to a dark and drab home, your illuminated home will draw people in and offer a warm refuge for family and friends. Regardless of the purpose of your outdoor lighting, the benefits are all positive. From increasing safety and security to creating a warm and inviting environment, adding outdoor lighting will enhance and beautify your home.
