THE SONGS. THE SOUND. THE STORY. Motown the Musical Celebrates 60 Years of Motown!

“Motown the Musical tells the thrilling tale of the man who broke barriers and fought against the odds to define the sound of a generation”

S

ixty years ago – on 12 January 1959 - a man with an unstoppable dream invented a sound that would be remembered forever. Motown the Musical follows the legendary career of Berry Gordy and the creation of his musical empire, Motown Records. The story begins with the young Berry dreaming big, hoping one day to make people as happy and proud. After a few years on Detroit’s automobile assembly line he sets his sights on bringing a socially charged, racially divided country together with music. With an $800 loan from his family, Berry founds a music making factory. Motown is born! Berry not only had a great eye and ear for talent,

20 JANUARY 2019

but he was also able to nurture that talent, helping to create an incredible array of superstars - from Diana Ross and the Supremes, to Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, and many more. But with the Vietnam War looming and America at a cultural turning point, Berry realised the time had come to push for something bigger than he ever dreamed of: to make music that could get the whole world moving to the same beat. Motown the Musical tells the thrilling tale of the man who broke barriers and fought against the odds to define the sound of a generation – complete with the ups and downs of the personal relationships, the professional struggles, and – of course – the music that made history. Discover the story behind the beat that changed minds, touched lives and took the world by storm. Motown the Musical shows how one label and its roster of legendary artists created the soundtrack that transformed America and gave the world a new musical vocabulary – the Motown Sound. With over 40 classic songs such as “My Girl”, “Stop! In The Name of Love”, “Dancing in the Street”, “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” played by a 15-piece orchestra, this explosive event is the next chapter of Motown’s incredible 60-year history. An experience you’ll never forget, celebrate Motown’s phenomenal anniversary before the final performance in London’s glittering West End this Spring. Shaftesbury Theatre. New Year, new start: How to divorce amicably

32 JANUARY 2019

J

anuary is regarded as a time for fresh beginnings and new resolutions. Many people take stock to think about what they want to change or how they can improve their life and sometimes, this can mean wanting to start a new chapter without their spouse or partner. In fact, the first working Monday in January has become known by some as “Divorce Day” because lawyers frequently report a spike in initial calls from people wishing to take advice about separating from their partner on this day. This may be because the decision to separate has been made after a couple have spent a lot of time together over the festive period with the additional pressure of Christmas or the result of a new year resolution to finally do something about an unhappy relationship. Claire Filer, a partner in B P Collins’ family team, offers advice. One of the mistakes that couples may make when they’re heading for a separation is that one or both of them may not be emotionally ready, and they soon find that they’re heading rapidly into the process without thinking all the elements through. That could be the person seeking to end the relationship or the other party. In either case, it could affect the whole course of the proceedings and therefore it’s important, in the right circumstances, to consider counselling first, whether together with a view to reconciliation or to come to terms with the end of a relationship. Of course, this is not always appropriate in every case. Your lawyer should be happy to discuss this with you and to provide you with details of professional services that may be able to assist. If separating is the only option, careful consideration must always be given to the choices available to you. For example, if you do separate, will you both stay in the family home whilst matters

are resolved or is there an alternative? If you have children, how will they divide their time between your two homes? How will assets, including the family home, be fairly divided? Is it appropriate for spousal or child maintenance to be paid? A ‘good’ divorce can only happen if there’s respect, trust and honesty – sometimes a difficult combination to achieve when there’s animosity, anger or sadness on one or both sides. If you can’t trust each other on any level the process can get nasty and hugely protracted so it’s an obvious but important point that you need to choose your solicitor carefully. Find someone you have rapport with, who will fight your corner but will also manage expectations sensibly and deal with your partner’s lawyer in a professional and respectful way. Otherwise costs can rise as both parties become entrenched. Your lawyer should take time to listen to you, understand your position and what it is that you wish to achieve and provide you with pragmatic and strategic advice from the outset. There are many options available to you and court proceedings should be seen as the very last resort. If you’d like to have an initial conversation with B P Collins’ family team, please call 01753 279067 or email familylaw@bpcollins.co.uk. B P Collins’ family lawyers are members of Resolution which is an organisation committed to the constructive resolution of family disputes in a non-confrontational way. The team has also been awarded the highest ranking by independent legal directories Chambers UK and Legal 500 for 2019 and are known for their supportive and empathetic approach. Our advice and service is tailored to our individual clients and our clients are able to make important decisions, which impact upon the rest of their lives, with confidence. www.bpcollins.co.uk

Vienna Festival Ballet presents

Giselle Monday 4 March to Saturday 9 March

C

lassical ballet takes centre stage again from Monday 4 March to Saturday 9 March when the highly acclaimed Vienna Festival Ballet returns to the Theatre Royal Windsor with their stunning production of Giselle. The ultimate romantic ballet, Giselle is a tale of innocence, love, betrayal and madness. With music by one of the 19th century’s best composers, Adolphe Adam, and choreography by the late Nicholas Beriosoff, Vienna Festival Ballet’s traditional staging of this 1841 masterpiece moves from the sunny optimism of Giselle’s idyllic village life to a ghostly, moonlit world of mystery and menace. Giselle, a young peasant girl, has fallen in love with the handsome Count Albrecht, who has told her he is a villager named Loys. When she discovers that he has deceived her the heartbroken Giselle is driven to madness and death. Vengeful spirits of abandoned brides led by Queen Myrtha, Queen of the Wilis force Albrecht to dance to his death. Giselle was first performed in Paris in 1841, with choreography by Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot. Productions seen today were originally choregraphed by Marius Pepita for the Imperial Russian Ballet. In 1984 Vienna Festival Ballet’s production was choreographed by the late Nicholas Beriosoff (1906-1996), a Lithuanian baller master of Russian descent who emigrated to England. It was indeed a great honour to have Beriosoff often known in the ballet world as Papa Beriosoff, choreograph and coach the company in one of the greatest ballets of all time.

How will divorce shape your financial future?

I

t goes without saying that separating from a spouse or partner is often a stressful and emotional time. Worrying about how to split the matrimonial assets so that each party has financial security in the future is difficult and many people overlook their pensions and that of their partner. Emma McMorrow and Vandana Chitroda from the Family Law team at Royds Withy King discuss some of the main points they would advise clients to consider when negotiating the division of their financial assets, including pensions. “During our marriage, I’ve worked part-time while looking after our children so my pension savings are much smaller than my partner’s. I’ve heard that women are entitled to a share of their husband’s pension on divorce. Is this true?” Recent research* reveals that only 71% of divorced people discussed pensions during the process. Such assets should never be overlooked because often the pension is more valuable than anything else in the marriage, particularly if it has been accumulated over a long period of time. This oversight means that women in the UK are losing out on £5 billion of pension savings on divorce every year, simply by not pursuing their claim.

Make sure you are well represented It is essential to ensure that your advisers are suitably qualified in this area of work because there are many potential pitfalls to include. These can include not adequately valuing the pension, failing to obtain full disclosure of all relevant information, dissolving your marriage before a pension sharing order has been made and even overlooking state pension provision. 40 JANUARY 2019

If correct action is not taken at the right time, there may be serious financial consequences. The Family team at Royds Withy King work closely with suitably qualified chartered financial planners and pension actuaries to ensure that you don’t experience any of these problems. Full consideration is given to how best address any disparity in the pension provisions for each party to the marriage.

We work collaboratively to get what you deserve Our Family Law solicitors recommend that where appropriate, our clients use mediation or a collaborative approach in their divorce without going to court as court proceedings should be a last resort. This allows issues like pension savings and balancing out the contributions that were made by both parties during the marriage to be discussed and agreed, rather than the court making the ultimate decision. If you are unsure about pension arrangements that you are entitled to, taking professional advice at the time of separation from a Family Law solicitor can help take away some of the uncertainty and ensure that your future is protected. Royds Withy King is a City law firm with a local presence. Our Family team is based in Buckinghamshire and the Home Counties as are many of our clients. January recipe & kitchen news

N

ow that the festivities of Christmas are over it is time to start the New Year with a bang and inject colour to a grey month with dazzling seasonal dishes. January’s star ingredients are Seville and blood oranges, kale, salsify, wild game, vibrant radicchio, swede and pomegranate. Shellfish is a great catch and it is time to make good use of mussels, cockles, winkles as well as oysters for a wow factor. Hand dived scallops from

the Isle of Skye are at their very best at the moment. The combination of the pickled vegetables with a hint of spice from the curry and coriander gives a zing to this dish. The roasted Jerusalem artichokes add texture and a nutty rich taste. These unusual tuber vegetable (our namesake) which are related to the sun flower and grow well in our cold climate are high in iron and fructose as well as having great flavour.

RECIPE: Lightly Curried, Isle of Skye Scallops, Pickled Carrot and Coriander, Artichoke Purée and Toasted Coconut Ingredients Serves 4 • 12 large fresh scallops, orange roe removed • 1 fresh coconut • 1 tablespoon water • 200 g jerusalem artichokes – scrubbed to remove any soil • 200 ml milk

• 200 ml double cream • 2 tbsp of olive oil • 1/3 teaspoon of curry powder • Micro cress coriander to finish • Seasoning • 1 medium carrot peeled

Method 1. Cut the artichokes in to even pieces, place equal quantities of milk and cream, into a saucepan add the artichoke pieces and cook until tender for approx 25 mins then strain and liquidised, pass through a fine sieve and season. 2. Split open the fresh coconut take one half and grate some of the flesh, and then peel the remainder of the half with a vegetable peeler to make shards, then brown under a hot grill 3. Peel the carrot into ribbons with a vegetable peeler – cook in boiling salted water for 20 seconds and then refresh in iced water 4. Make the pickling liquor –place the water with the spices, peppercorns, vinegar and sugar into a pan and bring to the simmer and leave to infuse for a few minutes and then pass through a sieve. Dip the blanched carrot ribbons for a few seconds into the liquor and then remove and shake off excess, then roll the ribbons around your index finger to form a loose cylinder - place to one side. 5. Pan fry the scallops in a hot pan with a little olive oil until golden brown on both sides. They can be popped into a hot oven to warm the centre 6. To make the curry oil blend warm olive oil with curry powder and cook out for a few minutes in a small pan on a low heat – then pass through a piece of paper towel

48 JANUARY 2019

Pickling Liquor: • 200 ml cider vinegar • ½ tea spoon caster sugar • 2 black pepper corns • 1 pinch of dried cumin seed • 1 pinch of dried coriander seed

To serve 1. Dab off the scallops 2. Place swirls of artichoke puree on a warm plate – add the scallops 3 per person 3. Add the ribbons of pickled carrot and a drizzle of curry oil 4. Sprinkle with toasted coconut grated and shards and sprigs of coriander micro cress

New bed wetting clinic opens at Spire Thames Valley Hospital Ms Katy Parker,

D

id you know, around 12% of seven to nine year-olds regularly wet the bed? And for a small number (1.5-2%), the problem can continue into their teenage and adult years.* At Spire Thames Valley Hospital, we have opened an exciting project - a night-time bed wetting clinic for children. Known as “nocturnal enuresis,” this is when a child unconsciously wets the bed whilst they’re asleep. Our nocturnal enuresis service is a nurse-lead specialist clinic to help children and young people get dry at night time. Managed by Ms Katy Parker, our Children and Young People’s lead nurse, the service will be available for children aged five years and above. The nocturnal enuresis clinic will be held at Spire Thames Valley Hospital, where all appointments are available after school, so children do not have to take time off to attend. Three main reasons why children wet the bed: • Their bladders don’t stretch enough to hold all the wee they make at night. • They produce too much wee at night. • They don’t wake up when their bladder sends a signal that it’s full.

52 JANUARY 2019

Children and Young People’s lead nurse

There are many reasons why children are still wet at night-time, so we undertake a full assessment to design a tailored plan to suit them. We understand night-time bed wetting does not only affect the child; it affects the whole family. Bed wetting can be difficult and tiring to manage at home, so it’s important you can seek support from a specialist nurse - as parents this ensures you have all the relevant information and support to help you and your child become dry at night time. An appointment at our nurse-lead enuresis clinic will consist of a pre-assessment phone call, an information pack, an initial consultation and subsequent follow-up appointments for as long as you need them. Katy Parker is our leading Children and Young People’s Nurse with special interest in nighttime wetting here at Spire Thames Valley Hospital. As our Paediatric Lead, she is looking forward to welcoming children, young people and families into this clinic. If you would like book an appointment at our nocturnal enuresis clinic, simply call us on 01753 467616. *Data source: PCF Paediatric Continence Commissioning Guide

Detect the early warning signs Checking moles can save lives

N

o matter how safe you’ve been all summer with protecting your skin, it’s still important to continue being vigilant the rest of the year. It is advised that you check your skin at least one a month, from head to toe, looking for any suspicious lesions or moles. Recognising the early signs of melanoma is vital as the earlier the diagnosis, the better the prognosis and melanoma treated early has a five year survival rate of over 98 percent. Here we describe the best methods used to identify suspicious moles: A common acronym used by dermatologists is ABCDE: Asymmetry - If you draw a line through the middle of your mole and the halves don’t match, this asymmetry may be a sign of melanoma. Border - Ragged, notched, blurred or irregular edges are all warning signs. Colour – Look out for moles that contain several different shades of brown, tan or black, or they may be red, white or blue. Diameter – Malignant moles are bigger in diameter, if it’s larger than 6 millimetres across, get it checked. Evolving – Changes in size, shape, colour, elevation or other characteristics are another warning sign. However not all melanomas fit neatly into these categories so there are a few other factors to take note of, if any occur see a doctor immediately. • A sore that does not heal

58 JANUARY 2019

• Redness or new swelling • Spread of pigment • If it becomes itchy, tender or painful • If there is a change in the surface: oozing, bleeding, appearance of a bump or lump

Searching for Ugly Ducklings If the ABCDE acronym seems complicated, there is a simpler way to identify a suspicious mole: ask yourself whether it’s an ‘ugly duckling’ that looks different from all the other moles around it. It may be a small red mole surrounded by bigger brown moles, or it may be larger and darker than the others. For someone who has few moles, any change in a spot or growth makes an ugly duckling and a trip to the doctors. Take note of how your skin normally looks as this will make it easier when it comes to noticing changes. Remember, checking your moles could save your life. If you have any concerns we have a team of dermatologists here at Spire Harpenden Hospital who are on hand to help you. Give us a call today to book an appointment: 01582 714 420.

Q. Will not drinking alcohol in dry January actually make a difference to my health? A. Taking part in dry January can be massively beneficial to your health both mentally and physically. We should drink less than 14 units of alcohol a week and we should have days in the week where we don’t drink alcohol at all. There are lots of health benefits involved in cutting down your alcohol consumption including you may feel more energetic and lose weight, your skin may look better, you may sleep better, your mood could improve plus drinking can affect your judgment and behaviour. Too much alcohol consumption is also associated with many medical problems from heart failure, cancer, stroke and diabetes to having a weakened immune system meaning you can catch more infectious diseases. Dry January is a great idea. Q. What is the single most important piece of health advice you would give for 2019? A. Be proactive about your health and don’t wait to get ill. Proactive healthcare begins with us ensuring we take the time to look after ourselves. The four pillars of health are having a healthy diet, exercising enough, sleeping well and reducing our stress levels. If you are ticking all these boxes then you are likely to be leading a relatively proactive healthy lifestyle and will be reducing your risk of disease and medical concerns. If you’re worried about anything do visit your GP to discuss all your healthcare concerns. Pro-active healthcare is easier when you build a strong, open relationship with your doctor so you can talk about your concerns. Q. I have had a terrible year in 2018, how can I feel better emotionally and start the year anew? A. Make sure that you are looking after yourself this coming new year. Taking time to relax and recharge can be hugely beneficial to your mental and physical health. Find time at least once a week to do things 62 JANUARY 2019

which makes you feel happy, like going for a walk, yoga, meeting with friends or painting. Also, pay attention to the positives in your life. Although 2018 wasn’t the best year for you, going into 2019 with a strong positive mindset will make all the difference to your start to the new year. Q. How much exercise do I need to do to stay super healthy in 2019? A. Enjoy regular exercise and aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day, whether that be a long walk, weight training or going for a swim. Also incorporate exercise into your daily routine by getting off the bus two stops too early or walking up the stairs at work. Cardiovascular disease has been named Britain’s biggest killer, with 160,000 heart and circulatory related deaths taking place in the UK every year which could be prevented through weight loss and regular exercise. If you are looking to lose weight, focus on more cardiobased workouts, like running, cycling, rowing or tennis. Weight training is really good for your bone strength. By the way children and teenagers (5-18 yrs.) should engage in a total of 60 minutes of exercise a day. Q. What is the best diet to follow in 2019? A. There have been many new diets coming to light in recent years from the Ketogenic Diet which is a low-carb, high-fat diet, to the Mediterranean Diet which involves eating lots of fruit and veg, grains, fish and olive oil and using herbs and spices instead of salt as flavouring. Veganism has grown hugely in popularity in the last two years but ultimately, the best diet for you to follow in 2019 is one which is balanced and filled with lots of fruits and vegetables, high in fibre and good protein, whilst giving a wide berth to sugar, highly processed foods and too much salt. www.your-doctor.co.uk. 0330 088 2020.

The Best of Bathroom Trends for 2019

T

urn your attention to the biggest trends expected to hit your homes in 2019. Bathroom experts, Ripples have searched the sphere for key insight from designers and specialists - their round-up includes a whole host of colour in unexpected places, sophisticated finishes and textured tiles.

Black and Gold Say hello to pure indulgence. Black and gold are the glam combination on the interiors scene but think deco, not disco. Transformative textures and finishes such as brushed and polished gold are key to this striking look. Take this trend to the next level and accessorise with a pop of greenery and daringly dark floor tiles.

Back to Basin Forest green is reigning in interiors but it’s time to champion this colour in the bathroom with a stunning basin! Create a statement look with this piece by opting for brushed copper brassware - a must-have touch of luxe.

Colour Craze Colour finish baths are set to lead the way this year. Accent colours were the focus of walls and radiators in 2018 but now, look to throw a splash of paint on the tub! Take it a step further with a glaze finish, utterly luxurious and an added element of elegance when bath-time calls.

Tap into Texture Breaking through the sea of patterns are our six-sided friends, the hexagon. It’s a strong look for shower feature walls, putting a spin on the 76 JANUARY 2019

Mastering the Arts C

lassic works of art by the old masters have never gone out of style and today, traditional fine art is seeing a significant resurgence. This revival of styles such as Renaissance, Romanticism and Neoclassicism has introduced a burgeoning trend; reproduction painting. Brights of Nettlebed have commissioned many hand-painted duplicates of fine art masterpieces, allowing customers to admire their favourite paintings in their own homes. One example of a classic reproduction the company has available is The House of Commons 1833. Based on a 19th century painting by Sir George Hayter, this is considered one of the most important representations of the Reform Act of 1832, an event which changed the political landscape of Britain. The original, which covers 170-square feet of canvas and took over 10 years to complete, depicts the opening of the first Reformed Parliament in the House of Commons. Some 375 identifiable figures are captured in this portrait, including MPs, Whigs and tory peers. Today, it hangs in the National Portrait Gallery where it holds the title of ‘portrait with the most identifiable sitters.’ Brights of Nettlebed’s near-identical reproduction is displayed in a handmade English swept frame. Another example of a fine art reproduction at Brights is the portrait of Horatio Nelson. In this duplicate of a 1798 portrait by Guy Head, Nelson appears with a young midshipman moments after victory at the Battle of the Nile. Two battlescarred ships can be seen flying white ensigns in the background as Nelson’s companion hands him a sword wrapped in a captured flag. This reproduction has been stretched and mounted in reeded moulding. These are just two of the museum-quality commissioned pieces that Brights of Nettlebed

have in stock, which are replicas of important works dating as far back as the 15th century. The company is associated with a small studio of highly accomplished artists, each of whom has been specially selected for their technical skills and for their ability to faithfully replicate originals. Brights calls upon these artists for their bespoke ordering service, allowing customers to commission the oil painting of their choosing. Whether customers would like their own oil-painting reproduction of a classic masterpiece, photograph or personal family portrait, they are welcome to visit Brights of Nettlebed at their showrooms in Nettlebed, near Henley-on-Thames – where all of the existing paintings can be viewed in classically furnished rooms. Alternatively, call on 01491641115 or email enquiries@brightsofnettlebed.co.uk.
