Classical ballet takes centre stage again from Monday 5 March to Saturday 10 March when the highly acclaimed Vienna Festival Ballet returns to the Theatre Royal Windsor with their stunning production of Cinderella.

What to expect when you’re expecting … to divorce

The New Year can bring significant change for a lot of people. Some might decide that they want to change jobs, move house, or perhaps embark on a new hobby. For others, their thoughts may be more life changing; as research has regularly shown that after the Christmas holidays, a lot of people decide that their marriage is no longer working and think about divorce and separation.

aturally many people will feel apprehensive about the journey ahead and what their life will be like after their decree absolute comes through. Sue Andrews, partner with B P Collins who has over 35 years’ experience, advises on what can happen when you contact a specialist divorce lawyer, who should be able to provide reassurance to those thinking about taking such a step. At a first meeting the solicitor will obtain factual information such as length of your relationship, details about your children, your income and other resources. But – they should also take time to find out about your anxieties and goals as well as what has brought you to your decision. This will establish whether the marriage has broken down irretrievably and if divorce is what you really want. On the basis of that information your lawyer should be able to advise you about the way forward and likely outcome applying relevant legislation, judicial precedents and guidance to your circumstances. Good judgement, empathy and the ability to think strategically and ‘fight your corner’, are the key attributes of a good divorce lawyer. Depending on the circumstances, your lawyer may suggest counselling. It can help a couple identify whether the difficulties in the marriage are irreparable or not. Communication is key so even if the final decision is to end the marriage it is more likely to mean that the “formal bits” can be dealt with amicably. Your solicitor can only assess the situation realistically, if you are completely honest from the outset. If you hold something back it could delay resolution and hike up legal fees. The costs to obtain the decree absolute are likely to be in the region of £1,000 to £2,000 plus VAT and fees to the court of currently £550. However, if the resolution involves going to court involving a number of hearings, possibly
also with experts, then your costs will be high and will reflect the complexity of the issues and the work that needs to be done. This could be avoided through a negotiated settlement where you and your spouse are in control. Telling children about your decision to separate is never going to be easy but try to tell them together and reassure them that although they may not see both of you each day, they will continue to have a relationship with you both. It is often thought that mothers have an automatic right to have the children live with them, however that is not correct. Both parents have equal status, however this should not be about either of you but about the children and their right to have a relationship with you both. Circumstances such as where the parents work and live or the flexibility of each parent will of course come into play, but your aim should be to achieve a fair agreement and one that works for your children. If a child wants to stay with a particular parent and is able to make rational and informed decisions, then those feelings will be taken into account. The older the child is, the greater emphasis their views will be given, and if they are 15 years or over it is extremely unlikely that if there was a dispute, a court would make a decision against their wishes unless, of course, it is very clearly not in their best interests. Sue concludes: “Even though your Christmas holidays may have been stressful, the divorce process doesn’t have to be. he short daylight hours and long nights call for a bowl of pure comfort. This mussel chowder will obviously work with clams, however, when our shores are icy cold, usually between October and March, mussels tend to be plump and juicy.
To add further depth of flavour to your chowder, lightly smoking your shelled mussels will enhance the flavour further. Many easy to use smoking devices are readily available online these days. In my opinion, chowder is best served with very crusty and well buttered bread, enjoy!
RECIPE: Mussel Chowder
Serves 4-6
Ingredients • 1½ kg mussels’ • 50g butter • 150g unsmoked bacon • Lardons, cubed pancetta or chopped streaky bacon • 1 onion, finely chopped • Sprig of thyme
• 1 bay leaf • 1 tbsp. plain flour • 150ml milk • 150ml double cream • 2 medium potatoes – about 250 grams, cut into cubes • Chopped parsley and crusty bread to serve
Method 1. Rinse the mussels in several changes of cold water and drain well. Tip the mussels into a large pan with 500ml of water. Cover, bring to the boil and simmer for 2 mins until the mussels have just opened. Tip the contents of the pan into a colander over a bowl to catch the mussels stock. When cool enough to handle, remove the mussels from their shells – reserving a handful of empty shells for presentation if you want. Strain the mussels stock into a jug, leaving any grit in the bottom of the bowl. You should have around 800ml stock. 2. Heat the butter in the same pan and sizzle the bacon for 3-4 mins until it starts to brown. Stir in the onion, thyme and bay and cook everything gently for 10 mins until the onion is soft and golden. Scatter over the flour and stir in to make a sandy paste, cook for 2 mins more, and then gradually stir in the mussels stock then the milk and the cream. 3. Throw in the potatoes, bring everything to a simmer and leave to bubble away gently for 10 mins or until the potatoes are cooked. Use a fork to crush a few of the potato chunks against the side of the pan to help thicken – you still want lots of defined chunks though. Stir through the mussels’ meat and the few clam shells, if you’ve gone down that route, and simmer for a minute to reheat. Season with plenty of black pepper and a little salt, if needed, then stir through the parsley.

Snowdrop walk Families are invited to flock to an idyllic Snowdrop Sunday stroll around picturesque West Wycombe Park in aid of The South Bucks Community Hospice.

he event, to be held on February 18, 2018, has become one of the most popular Sunday afternoons out in the annual calendar in Bucks, with visitors enjoying a walk around the beautiful park and the opportunity to plant a snowdrop bulb in celebration of Spring or remembrance of a loved one. In addition to the traditional planting, this year’s event will offer indoor and outdoor activities as well as entertainment from local groups. Ben O’Keefe, Community Fundraiser for the hospice, based at Butterfly House in High Wycombe, said: “Snowdrop Sunday is a wonderful day out for everyone. Last year, hundreds attended the event and it was a huge success. The location is
incredible, and some may even recognise the park as part of the set for blockbusters such as Pride and Prejudice and Downton Abbey. “This year we’ll be at the village hall selling hot drinks, cakes and savoury snacks to refresh the walkers, and a variety of stalls will offer visitors the chance to buy a souvenir or have a go on the ever popular tombola. Children will be entertained with a choice of activities and crafts to take part in including a butterfly-themed treasure hunt taking place around the grounds.” Ben added: “Everyone is welcome, and we think this would appeal especially to families as a great day out, while helping to raise money for patients with life-limiting conditions at our hospice.” Entrance is £2.50 for adults and £1.50 for under 16s (under 3s go free) – please note, only assistance dogs are allowed on the estate for the event. Q. What is the single best thing I can do for my health in 2018? Be proactive with your health and don’t wait for things to go wrong. Exercise, eat healthily, try to avoid stress where possible, sleep well and get things checked out by your GP if you are worried about anything at all. Exercise allows for muscles and the heart to get a good workout. Eating a variety of different green vegetables such as spinach, collards, kale, peas, mustard greens will benefit your health immensely, increasing vitamins and minerals and helping reduce inflammation, as well as helping improving immunity and blood sugar levels.

Q. Is it a good idea to do detox food diets? Q. What is Dry January and will I really benefit? Alcohol misuse is the UK’s biggest risk factor for death, ill-health and disability for people aged 15-49. Dry January is the annual movement through where people give up alcohol for the month of January to take control of their alcohol intake and drive conversation about alcohol and the harm it can cause. Dry January is a great thing to do because not only will it aid your health, it can help your waistline and skin, enable you to save money, mean you sleep better and show you that you don’t need alcohol in perhaps the way you think you do. Q. Why is your BMI so important? Your body mass index (BMI) is an important calculation using your weight and height to calculate your body fat composition which allows doctors to determine your potential health risks including you developing chronic diseases. If you’re relatively healthy, your body mass should fall between 18.5 and 24.9. It is one of a number of possible calculations to determine how your health is doing.
Q Should I be taking vitamin D throughout the year in this country? Getting out regularly for a short walk will help you get sunlight exposure to increase levels of vitamin D which reduces the risk of seasonal affective disorder, osteomalacia and rickets. The Government currently recommends that only pregnant women, children up to the age of five, those over 65 and people with darker skin, as well as those who do not expose their skin to sunlight on a regular basis, should take regular vitamin D supplements. It is hoped hundreds of participants will power through the streets of Hillingdon for one sensational night in aid of a very special Hospice, which has been providing first class palliative care to patients and their families facing life-limiting illness for over forty years, across Hillingdon, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire.
The challenge – if you choose to accept Take on a 5.5 or NEW 10-mile route (day glo accessories and carnival headwear at the ready), setting off from the grounds of Mount Vernon Hospital in Northwood and heading off into the moonlight towards Northwood, Harefield, Moor Park, Rickmansworth and Ruislip. Making a change I
t’s that time of year when everything is focused on making changes whether these are lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise or career changes i.e. looking for a new job or completing a professional qualification. Whatever the change it is widely believed that if you start off the year making a change you will be able to follow through for the rest of the year…right? Wrong. Did you know most people give up on their New Year changes within about 3 weeks of starting them? In fact, there are only a small percentage of us that actually keep their New Year resolutions for the entire year. However just because your changes don’t last longer than a month does not mean failure. There are many reasons why people can’t keep up with their goals more often it is because the goals they have set are too unrealistic – aiming to lose half a stone in a week, or cutting out sugar from your diet without making any changes to diet. Rather than setting yourself the big goals start why not start on the smaller scale; initially they may not feel as powerful but they have a greater chance of creating real change and they will last longer. Setting smaller goals doesn’t mean comprising on them it’s about being realistic.

Tips to follow to set manageable goals:
Start small – Make resolutions you can actually keep, for example, if you wish to be more physically active schedule in gym sessions two-three times a week instead of all seven days. Change one behaviour at a time – rather than changing everything all at once i.e. physical activity and changing jobs - work towards one change at a time. Set yourself timelines to work towards. Talk about it – share your experiences with friends and family; fortunately as we live in a world that’s always ‘online’ this has never been easier; there are various social media platforms to share your changes and experiences and discuss with others. Documenting lifestyle changes are a huge influence on social media platforms and some have reported them to also be a motivating factor. Don’t be too hard on yourself – minor hurdles in achieving your goals are completely normal and OK. Don’t give up completely because you ate a cookie or skipped the gym for a few days, everyone is busy and life tends to get in the way. As long as your persevere with the goal and continue to work towards it – effort counts for everything. Ask for support – talk to your friends and family and ask for help and support when you feel you are not reaching your goals. Alternatively if you feel overwhelmed or unable to meet your goals on your own, consider seeking professional help. Psychologists are uniquely trained to understand the connection between the mind and body. They can offer strategies as to how to adjust your goals so that they are attainable, as well as help you change unhealthy behaviours and address emotional issues. hen husband and wife Nigel and Belinda Taylor moved to Amersham 4 years ago, they set down roots with their family and moved their successful travel management company (Business First Partnership) to local premises. Spire Harpenden helped me climb Mount Kilimanjaro
I
t was set to be a father and daughter challenge of a lifetime for Annabel Richardson and her dad Paul as they planned to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. But when 57-year-old Paul broke his collarbone while touring in Italy with the Harpenden Raiders Cycling Club it looked like their climbing adventure might have to be put on hold. “We had booked a family holiday to Mexico for just five days after the accident and I didn’t want to let Annabel or my wife Nadini down so I put off any treatment hoping the bones might knit together naturally – they didn’t,” said Paul.

So with the Kilimanjaro date of October 21 ‘set in stone’ Paul, a non-executive director, realised he needed an successful operation followed by a superquick recovery if peace was to be maintained in the Richardson’s Harpenden home! Following an MRI scan at Spire Harpenden Hospital Paul met with Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Mr Tony Corner who told him that the collarbone was broken in three places and there were two other fractures near the shoulder joint. Mr Tony Corner explained that, ‘Mr Richardson had sustained a major injury to his shoulder. Although my general principle is to only consider surgery as a last resort it was clear Mr Richardson needed to undergo a reconstruction to optimise the long term outcome of his shoulder and to also win the race against time to help him climb Kilimanjaro. Fifteen-year-old Annabel, a student at Queenswood School in Hatfield, said: “I have to admit I was a bit cross with my dad when I first heard about the injury but I was determined to help him get through it all so I was right behind him as he worked hard to get back to fitness. “He only had ten weeks from leaving hospital until we started the climb so I was really proud of him when the doctor gave him to okay to climb just
a week before we were due to set off!” Sixteen-year-old Annabel, who raised £1,600 for the War Child charity, loved the climb although walking up to 14 hours a day in the freezing cold did test her limits – but it was all worth it when they reached the summit. “Sometimes we actually had to start climbing at midnight – in the pitch dark – and I did suffer a bit from being at high altitude but it was a case of slowly does it and eventually we reached the top,” she said. “It was a fantastic feeling, especially as we had built up such a great friendship with our fellow climbers. Everyone was smiling and hugging each other and although we were all exhausted we were all very happy.” As for Paul, he was full of praise for Mr Corner and the physiotherapy team at Spire Harpenden. He said: “It was hard work getting fit enough to start the climb and I admit I didn’t mention my injury to the team leader in case they tried to stop me taking part but the physio team gave me all the help I needed. “In the end I am so pleased we did the climb – it really was an unforgettable experience and I was so proud of the way Annabel handled the whole experience.” www.spireharpenden.com

exploring the benefits of underfloor heating You have a steaming hot shower or a relaxing soak in the bath… the last thing you want is to step out onto a cold floor.
H
igh comfort levels, together with low running cost and environmental benefits, have resulted in a growing demand for underfloor heating systems. Underfloor heating is the most comfortable form of heating because it is largely radiant, and completely unobtrusive Some people estimate that this gives an average of 15% more usable space in a room. It is completely safe and more hygienic than radiators. And more energy efficient.
Energy efficiency Most new buildings can be kept warm with heating power in the range 35 to 75W/m2, which can be achieved with floor-surface temperatures of just 24 to 27°C. The maximum floor temperature should not normally exceed 29°C, although up to 34°C is acceptable for bathrooms. An underfloor heating system uses water at a much lower temperature than that required by radiators, making it ideal to be fuelled by alternative energy sources such as solar or geothermal energy. Depending on the conductivity of the floor, the water needs to be between 40 and 60°C to reach the design floor temperature. By contrast, radiators generally require the water to be at 70 to 80°C.

Screed Before the screed is laid, edge insulation should be set all round the periphery of the room to allow for thermal movement in the screed during the year. The heating pipe is fixed to the top of the insulation, just before the screed is laid. The pipe should generally be set at 200 mm spacing. This is close enough to guarantee best heating performance and minimises the length of pipe needed. The pipe can be stapled to firm insulation and fixed with screw clips to soft insulation. Another option is system plates. These vacuumformed plastic panels have moulded pipe grippers to hold the pipe securely and at regular spacing.
Timber floors (floating) Panels of insulation are used to support a timber floor deck. This is normally formed from tonguedand-grooved panels of chipboard or plywood. Floating-floor panels with pre-cut pipe channels and factory-fitted aluminium heat diffusers are available to be used instead of plain insulation panels to support a fully floating deck. These purpose-build panels have a higher conductivity and help minimise downward heat loss.

Timber battens, joists and I-beams
If the boiler cannot supply the water at the required temperature, it is necessary to add a water-mixing control unit to reduce the water temperature before it enters the underfloor heating system. There are forms of underfloor heating to fit every type of floor construction (screeds, fully floating timber floors, battened and joisted floors), as well as floor constructions that incorporate acoustic components required to

Softwood joists are commonly used in intermediate floors, although manufactured I-beams are often used because they can be stronger and are more stable dimensionally. apanese is a language with an innate lyricism and rhythm. It is the mother tongue of the Haiku, a tiny poem that in just 17 syllables promises to break your heart or instill some powerful universal truth. And just as the Haiku is soulful and sweet, so are the Japanese philosophies that are captivating the imaginations of designers and homeowners in 2018. Split into several distinct parts, Japanese aesthetics can be best understood through the creations of contemporary designers. While verbal translations can often lead to slippages in meaning, design manages to distill what words cannot, offering us an artistic way in to these elusive Eastern ideas. First up is the principle of Fukinsei, captured effortlessly by B&B Italia’s Tobi Ishi Dining Table. Fukinsei highlights the flawed, asymmetric beauty of the natural world, which is full of harmonious relationships that are contrasted yet balanced. The asymmetric proportions of this stylish dining table establish an arresting focal point, a moment of synchrony in a hectic, modern world. Its calming appearance inspires us to get back to the dining table with family and connect in whatever way we can, putting an end to dinners spent in front of the TV. It could be argued that we’re all artists, snapping away with our mobiles and generally enjoying a more visual world, but all too often our ‘work’ ends up unseen

hotographs of family, friends and holidays are commonly left lingering on laptops and phones, instead of being out on display. What could be easier than dressing your walls with personal photos and artwork for an instant injection of personality? Traditionally, the walls of ancestral homes were hung with elaborate paintings of family members, and now, the modern, affordable equivalent is photographic family portraits. There are lots of ways to display photographic wall art. Individual shots can be blown up into high-impact images and displayed as a focal point. Another successful approach is for each family member to be shot separately rather than as a group - which captures the perso nality of the various individuals, then each can be framed and the prints grouped together on a wall. Create a gallery in a hallway or corridor - use matching frames in the same size and hang them in rows to draw your eye along the space. The great thing about adding art to your home is that it can be done on practically any budget. Whether it’s investing in a painted piece of furniture or framing old postcards or vintage prints, creating a cool, cohesive look is simple, effective and a great way to bring a home to life. Wall murals, once so naff, have won back their

style credentials. There is a huge range online of foreign landscapes, feature shots and famous views from the Pyramids to the Eiffel Tower. Alternatively, opt for a gentle, bucolic effect with a watercolour landscape. Kicking convention out the window and displaying images you really love will result in walls that speak volumes about your taste and way of life. A vibrant or quirky piece of artwork adds a splash of personality in an instant. If hanging prints isn’t quite your thing, consider utilising shelving space and carefully display framed artwork on it, or simply put prints on the floor and lean against a wall. For an inexpensive, imaginative touch, use your children’s artwork - the more abstract and playful the pictures, the more striking the display will be. Don’t be afraid to put a larger picture next to a smaller one, but perhaps balance it by having two or three small pictures taking up the same space as the larger one. A series of different sized pieces can look striking when carefully spaced and hung at the same mid-point, but allow each one enough room to breathe. Don’t be tempted to hang paintings or prints too close together.” Art now comes in all shapes, styles and sizes, giving the opportunity to use your creative flair and illustrate your interests and personality in your own home.
