But why? “Turkey has a reasonable flight time (approximately four hours direct from London), boasts a beautiful coastline that’s lapped by the turquoise water of the Mediterranean Sea, and offers a fantastic choice of luxury all-inclusive hotels,” Ox says. “Let’s be honest, there isn’t a lot more you need for a summer holiday.” Belek is known for its sandy beaches and shimmering sea, so be sure to pack your best swimwear. Best for: Adrenaline junkies Across the pond, Orlando, Florida shouldn’t be overlooked for your summer 2019 getaway. The Canary Islands are an ideal summer 2019 destination, especially for ‘3G’ getaways. “Tenerife has a minimal flight time which is usually appreciated by the very young as well as older members of the party,” Ox says. “Plus, the destination offers great weather, plenty of hotels, lovely beaches and throngs of bars, restaurants and cafes.” Here you won’t struggle to find a restaurant that serves Paella as well as chicken nuggets, or somewhere that has a great ocean view but also has football on in the background. A well-rounded destination for all, be sure to visit Siam Park for a day of splashing fun and water flumes.
Croatia
Best for: Unimpressed teenagers You know the drill. Your perfect little darlings are at that ‘difficult’ stage where nothing you do is ‘cool’ enough – we get it, and we know it makes booking a family holiday a little tricky. Enter Croatia. Largest ever conservation project in the Chilterns is awarded National Lottery funding • Uncovering the biodiversity in the headwaters of the Chilterns – The Central Chilterns features a number of important small streams and ponds and the scheme will identify and map their biodiversity. • Revealing the history of the Chilterns’ chair Bodgers – The scheme will uncover the lives of historic woodland wood-turners known as ‘Bodgers’, and allow people to reconnect with their craft heritage through events and demonstrations.
A
project to restore and enhance habitats, landscapes and the heritage of the Central Chilterns has been awarded a National Lottery grant of £2 million. The Chalk, Cherries & Chairs Landscape Partnership Scheme, spearheaded by the Chilterns Conservation Board will also work to educate communities to become protectors of their heritage and landscapes. The five-year scheme will encourage people to connect to the wildlife and cultural heritage of the Central Chilterns through a number of interconnecting projects across three themes: Wildlife & Landscape, Heritage & Landscape and People, Communities & Landscape.
Key aims of the scheme: • Protecting declining wildlife – Wildlife within the Central Chilterns has declined severely over the last 20 years. Chalk, Cherries and Chairs will support habitat management to protect the areas that species rely on. • Reinvigorating Chilterns Orchards – Our once common cherry orchards have all but disappeared, but will be rejuvenated and revived through the scheme. • Solving the Mystery of Grim’s Ditch – Presumed to be an ancient routeway, Grim’s Ditch is a real mystery, which further research will help resolve. 22 FEBRUARY 2019
Supported through the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), High Speed Two Ltd through the Community Environment Fund (CEF) and Wycombe District Council through the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL), the project will leave a legacy of improved conservation and land management, partnerships, skills, volunteers, and engaged communities caring for the future of wildlife and their heritage. Ros Kerslake, Chief Executive of HLF said: “The Central Chilterns has a wealth of heritage stories dating as far back as the Neanderthal huntergatherers of the Paleolithic era…We are thrilled that with money from the National Lottery we are able to fund Chalk, Cherries and Chairs to preserve this important natural heritage for future generations.” Commenting on the award, Kath Daly, Countryside Officer said: “Over the last two years a strong partnership of organisations, ranging from UK-wide charities to local community groups, has united to help plan Chalk, Cherries and Chairs… This major partnership will provide opportunities for people to get involved and volunteer; to increase and improve wildlife spaces; and for communities to learn, create and take action for heritage.” Recruitment of project staff has now started and work will commence in early summer. The hotel’s interior design carefully balances the history of the building with contemporary luxury while creating a number of distinct and bespoke design features. Debts in divorce: Who is responsible?

hen resolving financial issues on divorce or separation, there is often a real issue about who is going to take responsibility for debts that still need to be settled. Emma McMorrow and Vandana Chitroda from the Family Law team at Royds Withy King discuss some of the main points they would advise clients to consider when splitting financial assets during divorce.
Whose debts are they anyway? If the debts are in your joint names then you are jointly and severally liable for them. In other words, you are liable as a couple but you’re also liable as individuals. Debts in the sole name of one party can however lead to dispute, particularly if they are substantial. The starting point is that the person who incurred the debt is the person who is liable. It may be that everyone accepts that but in many cases the debt has been incurred by one party for the benefit of the family as a whole (in their view). Unsurprisingly therefore, they are unhappy that they should be solely responsible for it. Whilst it is inevitable these days that most couples will carry some level of debt in addition to their mortgage, there is no doubt that for many married couples, their relationship starts with debt as a consequence of the trend for extravagant wedding ceremonies. It is increasingly common for a large portion of the debt that needs to be dealt with upon divorce to be sums still outstanding from the wedding celebrations! 28 FEBRUARY 2019
Practical measures to record your debt If you are building up a necessary debt, try to keep a clear record of what the money was spent on. When transferring credit card balances to take advantage of interest free credit, keep a record of how the original debt arose. If there is an argument as to whether a particular debt should be considered as family debt, a question will always be asked as to what the funds were spent on. Do not forget that if one of you has a credit card account with the other as an additional card holder, it is only the original account holder who is liable to the credit card provider. Loans from family members are increasingly common. If the money is intended as a loan, make sure you have evidence of that (a handwritten and signed agreement is better than nothing). Unsurprisingly, family members who have given money to a couple are likely to be uncomfortable with the idea that their relative’s former partner should benefit from that money when they separate. This often means that when a couple divorce, relatives will try and argue that a loan exists even if there is nothing to prove that. Unless there is clear evidence that there really was a loan, it is likely that the money will be viewed as a gift by the court. Reinvigorating Your Space
T
he start of a new year is a time of reflection for many, but instead of turning your attention to what you want to change or what you want to achieve this year, think about this – how do I want to feel? Your environment plays a huge role in shaping your mood (you’ll know this if you’ve ever felt the glare of office lights for too long) and there’s arguably no environment more important to your wellbeing than your home. New Year, New Me I
f you feel as though the cracks in your marriage have become too hard to ignore over the festive period, then you are not alone. In September 2018, the Office for National Statistics released the following information: • There were 101,669 divorces of opposite-sex couples in England and Wales in 2017. • There were 338 divorces of same-sex couples in 2017, more than three times the number in 2016; three-quarters of same-sex couples divorcing in 2017 were female. • In 2017, there were 8.4 divorces of opposite-sex couples per 1,000 married men and women aged 16 years and over. • The divorce rate for opposite-sex couples was highest among men aged 45 to 49 years and women aged 40 to 44 years. • The average duration of marriage at the time of divorce was just over 12 years for opposite-sex couples. Unreasonable behaviour was the most common reason for opposite-sex couples divorcing, with 52% of wives and 37% of husbands petitioning on these grounds; it was also the most common reason for same-sex couples divorcing, accounting for 83% of divorces among women and 73% among men. Further statistics reveal that the estimated percentage of marriages that end in divorce is 42% with around half of these divorces occurring in the first 10 years of marriage. In a nutshell, the cumulative percentages of marriages that end in divorce increase more rapidly in the first 10 years of marriage than the 10 years after that. Furthermore, once the 20th wedding anniversary is reached, the cumulative percentages increase less rapidly. Relationship troubles - including difficulties with money, trust, fidelity, controlling behaviour and lack of communication - are more common in marriages

than many would wish to admit. Marital issues such as these coupled with the pressure over Christmas and the New Year to “hold it together” for the sake of the family can be too much to bear after spending more time than usual with a spouse that you no longer feel a real connection with. ranee, the story goes that yourself and your husband created your first Thai Tapas menu in the basement of a fisherman’s cottage in Brighton back in 2002. With that building then becoming your Brighton restaurant; Giggling Squid has certainly come a long way. Tell us what inspired you to start off in the restaurant business. It’s funny because the things that inspired me to open a restaurant was not just the food itself but creating a Thai experience, with subtle décor less intense that what we’ve seen with other Thai restaurant offerings, and to make the surroundings stand out as much as the food Where does your inspiration come from for the dishes that you serve? My mum and the travels we made in Thailand. Some are from coastal towns and others are inspired by the night markets What is your favourite dish on the menu? I have so many favourite dishes dependent on how hungry I am. When I am very hungry I would go for beef rib and coconut sauce. If I’m looking for something light then it would have to be the be Pamelo and Jicama salad. Why did you decide Henley needed a makeover and what can we expect? I feel any restaurant should move with time and trends. I cannot resist the new and uplifting colours from fabrics, wallpapers and flowers which can transform the same building into something totally different feels which I find amazing. For someone who has never tried Thai before, how would you describe the menu? The menu is designed to suit the whole family. We’ve got the classic Thai dishes of course and we’ve got some adventurous dishes too using unusual Thai ingredients and creating dishes we hope our customers will love. Where did the name come from? It’s the nickname of one of our three children! Last December marked the 30th restaurant of Giggling Squid. That’s really impressive! What do you look for in a town and building when starting the plans to open new site? A town that has its own charm and vibrancy within a great community - somewhere we can make a difference to the dining scene. We really do love Oxfordshire and the surrounding areas; we look forward to spreading our tentacles further in the future.

Thinking about getting married? Let your heart… and head… lead the way
I
t is very exciting when you and your partner decide to get married or enter a civil partnership. But it is important to think carefully about the legal implications of this decision. While your enthusiasm shouldn’t be curbed, it is important that you take legal advice before the big day as Claire Filer, family partner at B P Collins, explains. Prenuptial agreements are entered into by a couple who are planning to marry with the intention of setting out what should happen if the relationship breaks down. The agreement deals with financial arrangements and usually sets out what should happen to property owned before the marriage, property acquired during the marriage, gifted or inherited property or whether maintenance or capital provision should be paid by one party to the other. However, it can be more detailed and could, for example, deal with specific assets such as shares in a business.
Marrying in later life? Prenuptial agreements can be particularly important for a couple who have been divorced before or for someone who might expect to inherit money during the course of the marriage. They may have children from a previous relationship for whom they wish to safeguard their assets. Whilst the agreement cannot prevent either spouse making a claim to the court in the event of the breakdown of the marriage, the court will take the agreement into account provided certain requirements are met. It is also likely to uphold it if the decision does not leave one party in a predicament of real need and there are no vitiating factors, such as undue influence or duress.
Post nuptial agreements Post nuptial agreements are similar to prenuptial agreements, however they are entered into after a marriage – either shortly afterwards to take the place of a prenuptial agreement because, for example, it was contemplated too close to the marriage and the proximity would have been a potential vitiating factor, or later in the marriage. A trigger for a post nuptial agreement is often the expectation of a gift or inheritance from parents.
What to consider
Both parties should take independent legal advice from a specialist family lawyer well in advance of signing an agreement. In the case of a prenuptial agreement, it is better to start talking about it as soon as a date is set for the wedding and preferably at least six months before the big day. which are signed too close to the date of the wedding are more likely to be open to challenge, unless they have been contemplated and discussed some time in advance. A frank discussion should take place about what you want the agreement to do, prior to taking that advice. The provisions must be fair and guidance should be sought about what ‘fair’ means in the context of your relationship. The agreement should also include, if relevant, a requirement that it should be reviewed when certain things happen, such as the birth of children or one party being unable to work. A key condition of the agreement is that it should be signed with the benefit of a full and frank disclosure of each other’s capital and income resources.
Getting past the emotional barrier Marriage and civil partnership confer a unique status and impose obligations of mutual commitment and support on each spouse or civil partner. It is often difficult for people to get past the emotional barrier of discussing what should happen if their relationship breaks down when they are happy. Although nuptial agreements can be considered unromantic, such agreements can actually be a buttress to a relationship, as couples find that they’re able to talk openly and honestly about potentially difficult and challenging topics. There are 365 days of the year, not just the 14th February, so why do we show a little extra affection on just one day in the year, when there is nothing more exciting than an impromptu or unexpected romantic gesture? Who said that Valentines is only for people that are married or dating, isn’t love for everybody and everyday of the year?
I
was at friends over the Christmas period and one of the husbands had brought his wife flowers. Several women asked, “What did he do?” I queried, “Why does he have to have done something, why can’t it be.... just because?” Have we created a society that questions outward signs of affection on all but one day? Just for the record boys, I’ve got your back! My feelings are that no matter how strong a person is, a little tenderness from loved ones is always appreciated. My children will jump on me, kiss me and we all wish each other a Happy Valentines day. But I also tell them that I love them every day. Spending time with loved ones has a profound effect on your mental state and well-being. Being needed is integral to being human: it builds selfesteem and increases your self-confidence. Being thanked for your efforts makes it all worthwhile. Making time for one another throughout the year is important. My husband and I have a weekly date night. Even if we stay at home, we’ll get a take-out, open a bottle of wine and watch a movie, or just chat about everything and anything. However, I do have a rule that we don’t talk about our children when it’s our time. I love my girlfriends. We tell each other all the time how much we love and appreciate each other and carve time out of our busy schedules for one another. Love is precious, exciting, meaningful, forgiving and unconditional, but love can also leave you in a heart beat. I lost a phenomenal girlfriend, mother of two beautiful boys and a loving wife, three years ago this February. One minute she was here and the next gone…. leaving everything behind. No longer will we see her beautiful smile, hear her contagious laugh, feel her love and warm embrace. But we carry her in our hearts and know that she loved us. Love is wherever you want it to be, in the sky in your children, your family, friends, work, you, laughter, in a beautiful glass of wine, in a jumper, in a smell. Wherever it may be for you embrace it every second of every day, do what makes your heart smile. A very dear old friend recently contacted me and I never realised how much I had missed her being a part of my world. She re-opened a door that I had
closed and didn’t know how to open again. Don’t put things off - reach out and why not contact someone you love from your past? Love comes in so many different forms and ways and I am so grateful for what I have. My biggest love is my husband. He’s championed me from the start and still continues to do so. He puts up with my crazy insaneness. Knows when I need a hug and time to breathe and doesn’t ask for anything in return, just to keep on smiling and be happy. Oh, we’ve had our ups and downs like every normal couple. We ride the rough with the smooth. And in those times we realise how fortunate we are to have somebody to share it all with. So ignore the world that is so often unrealistically portrayed on social media and embrace what you actually have. Love is a gift that we all have within us and can find in the smallest things and places. So no matter what your status is this Valentines Day - Have an AMAZING one Love is…whatever you want it to be, so grab it with both hands, hold onto it tight but be warned it may hurt you and that is ok too, for you are loved in more ways than one. So to my very special husband, THANK YOU for your unconditional, patient love that grows stronger and stronger day by day for me, us and our children. I love you, we love you. lassical ballet takes centre stage again from Monday 4 March to Saturday 9 March when the highly acclaimed Vienna Festival Ballet returns to the Theatre Royal Windsor with their stunning production of Giselle. The ultimate romantic ballet, Giselle is a tale of innocence, love, betrayal and madness. With music by one of the 19th century’s best composers, Adolphe Adam, and choreography by the late Nicholas Beriosoff, Vienna Festival Ballet’s traditional staging of this 1841 masterpiece moves from the sunny optimism of Giselle’s idyllic village life to a ghostly, moonlit world of mystery and menace. Giselle, a young peasant girl, has fallen in love with the handsome Count Albrecht, who has told her he is a villager named Loys. When she discovers that he has deceived her the heartbroken Giselle is driven to madness and death. Vengeful spirits of abandoned brides led by Queen Myrtha, Queen of the Wilis force Albrecht to dance to his death. Giselle was first performed in Paris in 1841, with choreography by Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot. Productions seen today were originally choregraphed by Marius Pepita for the Imperial Russian Ballet. In 1984 Vienna Festival Ballet’s production was choreographed by the late Nicholas Beriosoff (1906-1996), a Lithuanian baller master of Russian descent who emigrated to England. It was indeed a great honour to have Beriosoff often known in the ballet world as Papa Beriosoff, choreograph and coach the company in one of the greatest ballets of all time.

nspired by a recent skiing trip to the snowy Alps, this month I thought it would be a nice idea to revive an old recipe which was once at the centre of home entertaining throughout the 70 s! I am of course talking about
the traditional cheese fondue. This time white wine, grappa or kirsch have been replaced by a hoppy lager beer and a little whiskey to give the fondue a real depth of flavour – perfect for a cosy supper in!
RECIPE: Cheese Fondue with Beer Ingredients
Valentine’s at The Artichoke - a Celebration of Romance and Love on Thursday 14th February
Serves 4 • 1 fat garlic clove halved • 2tsp cornflour • 400 ml hoppy lager • 800 g grated mixed Swiss or French alpine cheese such as gruyere comte, vacherin, Emmenthal or beaufort, a mix of three is best • 2 tsp whiskey • 1 slightly stale large country white loaf cut into medium size cubes • Gherkins, pickles and good quality charcuterie to serve 1. Rub the garlic over the inside of the fondue pot. 2. Mix a little of the beer with the cornflower to make a smooth paste then add this and the rest of the beer to the pot. 3. Put over a low heat and gradually add the cheese a little at a time till melted and steaming but not boiling Add the whiskey and more beer if the consistency is too thick 4. Transfer your pot onto the fondue stand and light the burner. 5. The bread can be dipped into the pot on your fondue forks and eaten with lots of vegetable pickles and charcuterie.

There is much debate about when is the right age to start being taught, but here at Westbrook Hay we feel that it is obvious; it is when the child is ready. Children can come to us in the term in which they turn 3, some will come from nurseries, other straight from home, while some will choose to remain at the local nursery and join us in Reception, when full time school begins. In our purpose-built Lower School, children benefit from a secure setting, with its own playgrounds, and advantageous teacher: pupil ratios. The aim is to provide a gentle start to life here, building on children’s existing skills. Five minutes with Thorpe House School sports scholar, Sam Sports scholarships at Gerrards Cross boys’ school, Thorpe House are awarded to pupils who are considered to be outstanding sportsmen.Year 9 sports scholar, Sam certainly fits the bill and talks here about his love of all things sport. What is sport like at Thorpe House? It’s brilliant! We play rugby, cricket, football, Futsal, athletics, table tennis, handball, swimming, tennis and golf, so there’s lots of opportunity to find out what you’re good at. There are always plenty of fixtures organised against other schools too, which I really enjoy. The teachers make games lessons fun and all of them play for sports teams outside of school so they really know what they are talking about when they coach us. The facilities are also excellent; our playing fields are two minutes from the main school and include two full size rugby pitches, three football pitches, a cricket pitch and great athletics facilities in the summer. There also a pavilion where amazing match teas are served and a swimming pool. The pool has just been renovated and covered which means we can swim all year round and won’t have to endure cold swimming sessions ever again! Who is your favourite sports teacher at Thorpe? Mr Brawn coaches me for rugby and I really like the way he teaches. He’s always really positive, makes training fun and as a team, he has worked hard to improve our tackling confidence. He plays for Slough RFC, so he definitely knows his stuff! What is your biggest sporting achievement? It has to be last season when I was invited to the Wasps U13s rugby trials. I was really excited to be chosen as you are only selected if they think you are a really promising player. I got through the first two rounds, however just before the third round I got injured during training and couldn’t continue the selection process. I was devastated, but at the same time really proud to have got that far. I hope to try out again next season. 58 FEBRUARY 2019
Who is your sporting role model? My granddad, Lt. Commander Derry who played fly half for the Royal Navy rugby team. He died two years ago, but when he was alive we talked a lot about rugby and he always had great tips on how to improve my game. Is your child ready to become a Machine Personality Designer? It’s time to get creative. Jeremy Lewis, Head

W
hat will today’s children become when they enter the workplace? With society and the advancement of new technologies moving so fast, it’s hard to predict. The World Economic Forum estimates that six in ten children today will have careers that as yet simply don’t exist. Recently, IT firm, Cognizant, created a list suggesting 21 possible ‘jobs of the future’. These included some thought -provoking job titles including Cyber Attack Agent, Algorithm Bias Auditor, and Head of Machine Personality Design. While we rather take for granted that new jobs will be created primarily in IT and technical industries, what really struck me was how many of these ‘new jobs’ also alluded to a high degree of creativity, suggesting perhaps that only by following a broad and well-rounded curriculum will our students emerge best prepared for these new and challenging roles. At ACS, we believe in the STEAM approach. This is STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths), with the addition of the arts. While an education focussed on STEM is widely acknowledged to prepare students for scientific fields, studying the arts is clearly increasingly important and relevant in industries that rely on innovators and creative minds to generate new ways of thinking about the world. truly synthesise ideas and come up with new and exciting options who will be headhunted as the next Cyber Attack Agent or Virtual Identity Defender. Take Gwen Musial, an ACS alumna and now a PhD candidate in biomedical engineering at the University of Houston. Gwen says: “In research and development, creativity is a useful tool for thinking of unique solutions to difficult problems. By having a balanced and well-rounded background, a student has a broad base of experience to draw upon when faced with challenges.” So it’s clear to me that by encouraging students in drama, music or the visual arts as much as we do in tradition STEM subjects, we can help them develop the imagination needed for the pioneering industries of the twenty-first century. This approach at ACS is underpinned by the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme. Offered at ACS Egham, the IBDP allows students to select a wide range of topics to study across the sciences, arts and languages. This means they graduate with a mix of skills rather that the comparatively narrow subject areas they would have to choose at A Level. All four of the IB programmes on offer at ACS Egham are about promoting creativity, inquiry, action and independence. The IB opens rather than restricts university choices, and better equips students for a world of new and exciting possibilities. The Mathnasium Method can achieve better results than one-on-one tuition Maths seems to induce more stress than any other subject, leading to anxiety which can have a huge impact on a child’s overall learning. Little surprise then that when looking to support their child’s learning - perhaps leading up to a school entry exam or the 11-plus - many parents opt for a private tutor. However, experts agree that small group tuition, with children working alongside their peers, often works better than one-to-one tuition.

However, whatever form of exercise you take, build up slowly to prevent you overwhelming yourself which is likely to result in giving up. Finally, it’s important that you don’t ignore your stress levels. This is just as important as the exercise and eating well. Meditation or yoga may do the trick for you, or even listening to your favourite artist or reading a good book. Keep your heart healthy. Sleeping pills should be taken as a last resort for most, and only for short term relief of insomnia, so it is important to educate yourself about their potential side effects such as causing constipation, diarrhoea, daytime drowsiness and/or dizziness. There are alternative ways to help stop insomnia, so seek advice from a GP and never buy sleeping pills online or from an unreliable source. They should always be prescribed by a doctor. Most sleep disturbance is anxiety driven. Q. I dream a lot, what does that mean and is it good or bad? A. Generally, dreams aren’t bad for you. They are thoughts, stories and images that occur in your mind whilst you’re asleep. The content and meaning of dreams are not fully understood but repeated bad dreams, or nightmares, can be linked to stress or trauma and it is important to see a GP if you feel these kinds of dreams are affecting your sleep and day-to day life. Dreams happen most often during REM (rapid eye moment) sleep, which is the deepest stage of sleep. It is thought that each dream lasts between five and 20 minutes. Q. What are the best ways to naturally help me get enough sleep? A. Try to have a relatively regular sleeping pattern so you feel yourself getting tired, going to bed and waking up naturally at a similar time every day. It is also important to avoid screens and technology before bed, this prevents your brain from having time to ‘switch off ’, so give yourself half an hour or so before bed to unwind – without your phone!

Equally having too much sleep is now known to not be good for your health. However, we are all different. If you feel refreshed when you wake up, then you may well be getting enough sleep. Quality of sleep is as important as quantity to feel healthy and fresh for the day ahead but aiming for seven to eight hours a night is generally a good rule of thumb. Q. What is a circadian sleep rhythm? A. The circadian sleep rhythm is basically a 24-hour internal clock working in tandem with your brain and body cycles to make you feel drowsy at certain times of the day and energised at other times. It’s also known as your sleep/wake cycle and is controlled by a part of your hypothalamus. To get a better understanding, most adults tend to wake up around the same time of day, feel a bit drowsy just after lunch and go to sleep at a similar time. There are of course exceptions to the rule! Q. I sleep 12 hours most nights, does that mean I am super healthy? A. Not necessarily. Just like sleeping too little (insomnia), sleeping too much is also considered a sign of disordered sleep and is called hypersomnia. Hypersomnia is also when you are excessively tired during the day. Hypersomnia is linked to depression and can be dangerous because you could fall asleep at any point including when you drive. You should see a GP if you feel sleepiness is affecting your life or if you find yourself often falling asleep during the day.

TIME FOR A CHANGE? We asked Interior Designer Sasha Willox if she had any tips for readers who are looking to redesign a room and she explains to us the 5 key elements to look out for…
TEXTURE Texture adds depth and interest to a space. Think about adding both Visual Textures (those that can be seen ie an interesting mirror) and Touch Textures (those that can be seen and felt ie cushions, throws etc). Whilst there should be a dominant texture to define a mood, try to find a contrasting texture to help avoid monotony.
COLOUR Colour can influence our moods and perceptions and is crucial in any room design. It can add depth to a space and can even trick the eye into thinking a room is wider or larger than it might be. Accent colour on a far wall is still a great way to draw the eye and will give an illusion of more depth. If you are unsure about which colours go together then a Colour Wheel is a fail-safe way of working out colour combinations. Most importantly don’t be afraid of using pops of colour here and there and have some fun.
PATTERN Patterns add interest and life to a room and can lift a scheme from ’nice’ to ‘amazing’! Abstract and florals are particularly on trend for 2019.
SPACE Where smaller spaces are concerned, focus on making the room feel as light and open as possible. To do this try and create the illusion of more space by opting for furniture with clean lines and open legs. Floating shelves or units are a great way to trick the mind into thinking a space is larger. In large or long rooms, subdivide different areas with a rug or slightly different wall colour to give definition to each part of the room. And in smaller areas using the same flooring material for adjoining rooms creates an uninterrupted flow and the illusion of space.
LIGHT Light is essential in interior design. It can be natural or man-made and can influence the mood and ambience of a living space. When creating a room think about the 3 main types – task, accent and mood lighting. An amazing lighting feature can create a really great focal point. 90 FEBRUARY 2019

he guest bedroom - or ‘spare’ - isn’t necessarily the most well-kept room of the house. If you’re lucky enough to have one, it’s probably either a dumping ground or used as extra storage space most of the year - meaning a mad dash to clear the clutter when visitors are booked in. (Relax, we’ve all got our guilty spare room secrets!) Hosting overnight guests? Transform a neglected spare room into a space that’s inviting and stylish. Give it a little TLC, splurge on new bedding and perhaps a few fun - or luxury - little extras here and there, and you’ll have it looking (almost) as fabulous as a boutique hotel room, but with homely touches too. Follow these simple steps to styling the spare...
Turn up the heat
Sleep like a log “Many people have no idea how comfortable their spare bed is, so I always suggest you ‘road test’ it to discover any lumps or bumps or comfort issues,” says Helen Johnson, from The Fine Bedding Company (finebedding.co.uk), which sells a washable Spundown range, including pillows and duvets.. “A new mattress enhancer or topper may be all that’s needed, which is cheaper than replacing a mattress but can mimic a new bed feel. Next, check care labels on filled duvets and pillows to see if they can be machine-washed at home. Feather and down duvets and those without guidance labels need to be professionally cleaned. Finally, give pillows and duvets a good shake before dressing the bed,” she adds, “to even out the filling and return their plumpness.”
Introduce hotel chic It’s the little things in life that count, and kitting out a room with a few practical items - like a mirror, a side table, or an extra chair - can make all the difference. Guests will feel comfortable and cared for, almost like being at a hotel. “A pile of clean towels (preferably that have been given 10 minutes in the tumble dryer on the day guests arrive, so they’re fluffed up and fresh) tied up with ribbon will help create an inviting atmosphere,” advises Johnson. “Fill a ‘just in case’ basket with essentials, like mini-toiletries, a toothbrush, hairbrush, shower cap - things that are all to easy to forget in the rush of packing presents and clothes. Provide a spare mobile phone charger and your home Wi-Fi code written on a postcard as well.”
Wow with wallpaper “Adding a feature wall is an affordable and easy update that will certainly deliver a boutique feel,” says Alex Whitecroft from iwantwallpaper.co.uk. “Wallpapering just one wall is often easier and quicker than people think - it can definitely be done in a day, and there’s no need to worry about patterns not lining up at corners. Less paper also means less money. Guest rooms need to make people feel welcome and appeal to varied tastes, so choosing wallpapers that won’t overpower an overall design scheme is good advice. “Under-bed storage allows for lots of extra space in a bedroom, and a storage pouffe is another solution. Make sure they contain spare blankets or extra throws, as people can feel colder in other people’s homes, and don’t forget spare pillows,” says Sue Brodie, head of creative design at holiday homes specialists Willerby (willerby.com), who also advises checking that the room’s windows can open and testing radiators to ensure they work. “All rooms, no matter what size, should have a focal point, as this anchors the space - normally the bed in a spare room,” she adds. “Use colour or pattern behind the bed, so that it’s not distracting or sleep disturbing, and minimise the clutter for a serene and balanced space.”
Spoil the spare “If a room isn’t regularly used make sure it’s well aired and add a room fragrance candle or diffuser,” advises Johnson.“A new lamp, cushion or rug can be all that’s needed to give a room a lift and provide a touch of luxury. It’s all about making people feel they have a sanctuary where they can retreat and relax as well as sleep.”
