Key Stage 2 applicants will be using the letters of the word LAUGHTER to make up an acrostic and Key Stage 3/4 applicants will be tasked with writing a short story of approximately 200 words. This story can be on any topic but somewhere must contain the phrase “the sound of laughter”. Taking the next big step in your relationship?

f you’re planning to get married or move in together, it’s easy to become caught up in the excitement of the moment. But it is important to think carefully about the legal implications of such decisions. While your enthusiasm shouldn’t be curbed, it is important that you take legal advice before signing on the dotted line, as Sue Andrews, family partner at B P Collins, explains. One of the most common misconceptions people make is to think that if they move into a partner’s home and contribute to the mortgage and the household bills, it confers an interest in that property. The reality, however, is that if you aren’t married then you don’t have the same rights as those who are married or in a civil partnership. If you are planning to move in together, think about having an agreement setting out each of your rights and responsibilities in relation to the property. If you are planning to buy a house with a partner then you should consider how that property is owned. For instance, if you are contributing more in terms of the deposit or mortgage repayments and are to be entitled to a greater share, you need to ensure that the documentation reflects this, because if not, you may find the property is owned equally. If parents are providing monies to help with the purchase then unless those funds are a gift to both

parties, consideration needs to be given to how the legal title is held and whether a loan agreement or other agreement needs to be prepared. This actually applies whether you are married, in a civil partnership or living together. For those planning to marry or enter a civil partnership, you might want to think about a prenuptial agreement and if so, you should discuss this as early as possible. Such agreements are especially valued by people not marrying for the first time and who want to safeguard their assets to pass on to their children, or where one or both parties have significant assets that they want to protect. People often say a pre-nup isn’t romantic or that seeking one implies a lack of trust. But the opposite is true. A pre-nup should spark a discussion about what you both want to achieve and what would be a fair and realistic way of dealing with matters in the event of separation. It’s important to note the emphasis on the word “agreement”, since it’s not about one party imposing terms on another. An open, honest and frank discussion at the outset is a great basis for a marriage. his month I have chosen a recipe for spiced ginger cake also known as pain d’épices and paired it with forced Yorkshire rhubarb. Forced rhubarb available from late January until March. The rhubarb
is lifted from the soil late in the year and grown on inside warm dark sheds lit by candlelight. This tart vegetable is a great contrast to the sweet spicy ginger cake and goes beautifully with a spoon full of cremé fraiche or vanilla ice cream.
RECIPE: Spiced Ginger Cake with Forced Yorkshire Rhubarb
Valentine’s at The Artichoke - a Celebration of Romance and Love on Wednesday 14th February
Makes 1 loaf
Ingredients: Ginger Cake • 450g/1lb plain flour • 50g/2oz rye flour • 2 tsp baking powder • 1tsp ground ginger • 1½½ nutmeg, grated • 1 tsp black pepper, freshly ground • Seeds from 6 cardamom pods, ground • 1 tsp ground cinnamon • 1 tsp caraway seeds, roughly ground • ¼ tsp ground cloves • ½ tsp salt
• 60g/2 ½ oz butter, at room temperature • 1 egg, at room temperature • 300g/10½ oz. honey • Zest of 1 orange • Zest of 1 lemon
Ingredients: Forced Yorkshire Rhubarb • 8 Stems of forced rhubarb • A little bit of apple or orange juice • Caster sugar to taste
Method: Ginger Cake 1. Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4. 2. Grease a 23cm (2lb) loaf tin and dust with a little flour. 3. Sift together the flours and baking powder and stir in the spices and salt into a bowl. 4. Using an electric whisk or by hand, beat together the egg and butter (it’s essential that they’re both at room temperature) and the honey and zests. 5. Add half the dry ingredients, followed by 125ml cold water, then the remaining dry ingredients and another 125ml water. Mix until smooth and well incorporated. 6. Pour into the loaf tin and place in the middle of the oven for 60-75 minutes, until an inserted skewer comes out clean. 7. Leave to cool on the tin.
Method: Forced Yorkshire Rhubarb 1. Trim the stems into equal sized batons. 2. Gently simmer in a little bit of apple or orange juice for 20-25 min. Add a little caster sugar to taste if necessary.
To Serve 1. Gently warm a slice of the ginger cake. 2. Add a generous spoon of the rhubarb and its cooking liquor. Finish with a spoonful of crème fraiche or vanilla ice cream.

HIDDEN TREASURES W
ithout doubt, there are many thousands of valuable and sought-after stamps hidden half forgotten in homes around Britain. Whether they are in albums, on postcards or even on old envelopes, now is the time to rediscover them and find out what they are truly worth. Paul Mathews, a trusted valuer and describer with over 40 years experience working for famous dealers Stanley Gibbons (Great Britain Specialist Department and Managing their General Buying Department) and world-renown auctioneers Spink (General Valuer and Describer), is offering free assessments and advice on readers’ stamp collections. From his years in the business, Paul knows that many people put off getting a valuation because they are uncertain about the best way forward or are worried about possible fees. This apprehension is often what leads to beautiful albums being boxed up in a garage or outbuilding at potential risk to their condition and value. Another reason why treasures are sadly neglected is that a large number of stamp owners have inherited collections and are unsure whether their relatives simply had an interesting hobby or were making a shrewd investment. Paul comes from a long line of collectors and will often view the cherished childhood albums with as much enthusiasm as the specialised properties. The increasing popularity of postal history means that anyone who has kept old

correspondence, especially if envelopes have their original letters perhaps with unusual contents or signatures, may have something a collector would be keen to buy. Postcards, both used and unused, from the late 19th or early 20th century can command high sums with the more popular examples at the moment being real photographic and topographical. Valuing requires an extensive knowledge and there is no substitute for years of scrutinising collections and undertaking research on values and understanding condition. Paul’s specialism is Great Britain and Empire but he has a strong overall knowledge and puts it to good use. He is delighted when he spots a hidden gem to put a smile on a clients’ face. It’s one of the nicest parts of a valuer’s job. Paul is a member of the Royal Philatelic Society of London (RPSL) and attends many of their meetings. Over the years he has travelled extensively around the country running valuation days and has attended exhibitions in the UK and overseas. I
have been privileged to mingle with royalty, celebrities and dignitaries while representing both my town and my council as first citizen and civic head. All of these were wonderful and unforgettable experiences over a long period of time. But in terms of job satisfaction, I have actually found something that perhaps compares to these fabulous roles. My role as an unpaid volunteer, helping charities and community organisations, is a source of huge pleasure because I know what a difference this work makes to people in need of help. I started volunteering when I was 12-years-old and the fun, enjoyment and sense of fulfilment are such that I almost feel selfish doing it! I am so honoured to now be a patron of The South Bucks Community Hospice, based at Butterfly House. As an ambassador for volunteering, my role is to encourage others to volunteer, and I do that with all my heart, in the

sincere knowledge of how meaningful the work can be. The charity gives help and hope to patients with life-limiting conditions. It is a non-bedded hospice and vital to this area – and yet only a very small part of its funding comes from the Government. The rest has to be raised by the charity itself, so that’s why it relies heavily on the work of its fantastic volunteers. If you have never volunteered before or are looking for another role, and would like to see what it is all about, what a great place to start. Not only are you surrounded by an amazing team of staff to support you, but there are so many roles you could volunteer for - from running reception, to helping in one of the shops, tending the garden, working in the kitchen, driving patients back and forth or getting involved in one-off events. If you only have a couple of hours to spare, that’s fine. Those hours will be incredibly valuable if, for instance, they are spent greeting people as they come through the door at what can be an incredibly stressful time. No special skills are needed – just enthusiasm, commitment and perhaps a love of chatting and spending time with others, although there are plenty of behind-the-scenes roles too. We welcome applications from a wide range of people and we would love to hear from your readers who may have time on their hands and want to give something back. Last month, I spent some time working in the hospice shops at Bourne End and Hazlemere, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. There is such a wide variety of work to do there, and it’s so fulfilling to know you are making a difference to others. My heart literally lifts when I work with an organisation such as Butterfly House, especially when I can see the impact my work is having and how many people are benefiting from my tiny contribution. Concluding financial claims I t may come as a surprise to many that completing a divorce does not automatically bring financial claims between spouses to an end. The divorce itself is capable of dissolving one’s marriage such that the parties are both able to go on and get re-married if they wish. However, the conclusion of the divorce does not, by itself, bring to an end the financial claims which the parties have against each other by virtue of their marriage. For background, the financial claims available to spouses as a result of their marriage include claims against: 1. Property and capital, including savings and investments 2. Pensions 3. Incomes 4. Claims against the other’s estate on death. Often, spouses who have separated or have agreed to separate will come to an informal arrangement regarding the division of their financial assets and, occasionally, their incomes. The difficulty, however, is that if these arrangements remain informal then they are unlikely to be enforceable through the Court or binding on either party. That is unless the terms of such an agreement are recorded in a formal document which, as part of a divorce, can be considered and approved by the Court to make it final. It should also be noted that it is only a Court approved agreement or final order of the Court which will allow for pension assets to be divided between the parties. For those who are about to embark on, or perhaps have already concluded, a divorce, it is almost always advisable for financial claims to be settled (and this can be done long after the divorce has been concluded). Such financial claims can be settled so that they become fully effective and enforceable by doing one of the following: Reaching an agreement with your (ex-)wife or husband which is then recorded in writing (in a 30 FEBRUARY 2018

Consent Order) and approved by the Court; Obtaining a final order from the Court, which is made after a financial application has been submitted to, and dealt with by, the Court. If no Consent Order or final financial order exists at the conclusion of a divorce, then it is highly likely that financial claims between the spouses remain live, even many years after the divorce is completed. As a result, this could mean that either party is able to pursue financial claims against their former spouse many years into the future and they may also be able to pursue claims against the other party’s estate on death. In order to avoid this scenario, it is only a Consent Order approved by the Court or a final order of the Court that can fully dismiss these financial claims in life and in death so as to offer certainty to the parties for the future. ast year was quite remarkable for our Year 8 boys. Not only had they gelled to be a very effective group of prefects, but they also returned an incredible haul of scholarships, with some gaining places and offers of awards at multiple schools. What makes the success even sweeter is the memory of when they were in Year 6, where their academic potential was less obvious. They proved, beyond any doubt, that the journey we take our senior boys on is a rewarding and exciting one; where they blossom at the top of the school and leave us in the best possible shape, ready for the challenge of senior school.

orest Schools are the ‘in thing’ at the moment, but what are they and how are Thorpe House School in Gerrards Cross using the concept to enrich the education of Nursery to Year 2 boys? Natasha Doran, Head of Thorpe House Pre-Prep and a Forest School Practitioner explains…. Isn’t Forest School just about playing and having fun in the woods? It’s so much more than that! The Forest School initiative began in Scandinavia in the 1950s and the philosophy behind it is ‘to encourage and inspire individuals of any age through positive outdoor experiences’.* So yes, the children should be having fun, but Forest School is also an opportunity to learn new skills outside the confines of the traditional classroom. Why did Thorpe decide to embrace the Forest School initiative? As a boys’ school, we know that boys work in very different ways to their female counterparts. Learning comes more easily through movement and visual experience, the more interactive and participative the better. So, this September we decided to introduce Thorpe Explorer Forest School sessions for every boy in our Pre-Prep Department. Come rain or shine and led by myself and a group of parent helpers, each year group spends two hours per week on Austenwood Common, the woods situated behind Thorpe House. So, what are the benefits? The pure joy demonstrated by each and every Thorpe Explorer (the name given to our boys when they are in Forest School) is immense, as are the benefits of spending significant time outside the confines of the classroom:

I’ve been known to shed a tear of happiness when a boy who never had been - became the leader. • New practical skills such as whittling, den building and fire building are experienced. • Physical development sees huge benefits, as boys climb trees, negotiate steep clay pits and walk along fallen branches and generally build up their fitness levels in the fresh air. • Being outside in the forest environment benefits their mental well-bring; it seems impossible to feel any pressure or stress amidst such beauty! • The little altercations which are so normal in the playground aren’t present here; instead language and communication thrive and the children learn to negotiate and to respect each other’s points of view. WHY SHOULDER REPLACEMENT SURGERY IS ON THE INCREASE Anatomic Shoulder Replacement & Reverse Shoulder Replacement
S
houlder joint replacement was first carried out in the United Stated back in the 1950s but has never been as common as hip or knee replacements However, in the past few years techniques have progressed and the procedure is becoming much more common. Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Mr Adam Rumian explains what shoulder replacement surgery entails and how it has developed in recent years. Q: What is a shoulder replacement? A: The shoulder is a ‘ball and socket’ joint like the hip joint– the ‘ball’ at the end of your upper arm bone fitting into a ‘socket’ in the shoulder blade. A replacement means a metal ball is fitted to your upper arm and a plastic cup-like device inside the socket. This is called an anatomic shoulder replacement because it reproduces the normal shoulder anatomy but it does rely on having intact tendons around the shoulder to move the joint. Q: Why has it taken so long for shoulder replacements to become a bigger part of orthopaedic surgery? A: Osteoarthritis of the shoulder is far less common than in the hip or the knee as it is not a weight bearing joint. Over the last twenty years we have a better understanding of shoulder disease and pathology and this has led more successful shoulder replacement surgery that we can offer patients. Q: How have the surgery techniques and equipment progressed over the past ten years? A: Techniques and instruments have improved to provide good exposure of the socket for accurate placement of the prosthesis. The socket and ball designs have improved to reflect patients’ variable anatomy. Q: What would make you consider a shoulder replacement? A: One of the most common reasons why people

need shoulder replacement surgery is osteoarthritis, a condition that makes joints stiff and painful, and impairs movement. However a traumatic injury such as a fracture of the shoulder joint may require a shoulder replacement. Q: What is a Reverse Shoulder Replacement? A: Standard shoulder replacement is an anatomic shoulder replacement as mentioned above. A reverse shoulder replacement puts the ball where the socket should be and the socket where the ball should be. This allows the shoulder joint to be moved by a single muscle the deltoid muscle. The reverse shoulder replacement is used for patients who have a painful shoulder and limited movement due to badly torn rotator cuff tendons or an arthritic shoulder with torn tendons.
Q: What sort of results can patients expect after surgery? A: Most patients can expect excellent pain relief and improved range of movement of their shoulder. Some patients may achieve almost full movement but the final movement also depends on the range of movement patients have prior to surgery.
Mr Rumian studied medicine at Cambridge University and Imperial College School of Medicine before specialist training in Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery on the highly regarded North-West Thames rotation in London. He has published many research papers, presented work at numerous national and international conferences and has been awarded a MD Higher Research degree from the University of London. Mr Rumian is also responsible for teaching higher surgical trainees surgery for trauma and shoulder and elbow disorders and is a faculty member and lecturer on courses held to teach advanced surgical techniques.
Q: How long would you expect a shoulder replacement to last – is it on a par with hip or knee replacements? A: Most studies record 90 to 95% of shoulder replacements lasting 10 years so they are approaching the same outcomes as hip and knee replacements. www.spireharpenden.com

Q: Is there a ‘typical’ age of a patient needing a replacement or is it something that covers all age groups? A: The common age group of patients who have shoulder replacements are mid-sixties to midseventies. However there are patients in all age groups who may benefit from shoulder replacement when other treatment options have failed.

National Heart Month February is national heart month. In the UK, 435 people lose their lives to heart disease every single day. More than 110 of these people will be under the age of 75, a very small number might even be children. Heart disease is a condition which can affect anyone, so we asked Dr Peter Petrie from Your Doctor all about this vital muscle.
Q. What are the best things I can do to protect my heart from heart disease? Smoking is one of the main causes of coronary heart disease so quit now to reduce your risk of having a heart attack which as a non-smoker is about half that of a smoker. Do about 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise every week to reduce your risk of heart disease - just 30 minutes of exercise, five days a week. Regular or high alcohol intake can lead to heart disease called cardiomyopathy so drink less alcohol. Maintain a healthy weight and reduce your stress levels. Q. How bad is stress for your heart? Excessive stress over a long period of time can cause heart attacks so it’s important that you do not overwork or overload yourself to protect yourself from the potential of developing heart disease. Q. How important is what you eat for your heart? Stick to a diet low in fats, flour and sugars and cut out processed foods which are high in calories and bad fats. We need cholesterol to be healthy but an imbalance of bad cholesterol in your blood can lead to heart attack or stroke. Oily fish such as salmon and sardines containing omega-3 fats, and 30g of fibre a day from foods like wholemeal bread, bran, oats, potato skins, fruit and vegetables can reduce the risk of developing heart disease. Cut down the salt in your diet (particularly sodium salts) as it can increase your risk of heart disease. Eating five portions of fruit and vegetables every day helps protect your body from heart disease.

Q. How do you know if you are having a heart attack?
A heart attack is when your heart is starved of oxygen-rich blood and it can cause damage to your heart muscle and is life threatening. Phone immediately for an ambulance if you think you or anyone else is having a heart attack. Symptoms you should look out for include chest pain, or pain in the arms, neck, jaw, back or stomach (severe or uncomfortable), shortness of breath and feeling light-headed. Sit and rest whilst you wait for an ambulance to arrive and ask someone to fetch you a 300mg aspirin unless you are allergic to it. Q. What is a good blood pressure result and what does it mean? Your blood pressure is represented by a top number (systolic) which refers to the pressure in your arteries during contraction of your heart muscle and the bottom number (diastolic) which looks at the pressure between heart beats. Blood pressure can change according to many factors on the day including how stressed you are, your posture and if you recently did a lot of exercise to name a few. Ideally adults should have blood pressure that is less than 120/80 mm Hg but allowances are made for individuals especially as we get older. Having a healthy lifestyle and weight, and taking regular exercise can help maintain good blood pressure. If your blood pressure is too high, then your heart is working too hard to pump blood to the rest of your body. Q. Is it true that pregnancy issues can tell you something about the health of your heart? Women who develop preeclampsia have increased risk of heart attack and stroke later in life and women who get gestational diabetes have a higher risk of heart disease.

What is Tooth wear? Tooth wear is the loss of the outer tooth surface as a result of chemical or mechanical activity in the mouth (as opposed to tooth decay and gum disease which are caused by the action of bacteria in the mouth) Tooth wear has three main causes, although in the vast majority of patients these occur in combination: Erosion refers to the progressive loss of tooth substance by chemical or acid dissolution. Abrasion is commonly seen alongside erosion. It is tooth wear caused by excessive rubbing away of enamel and dentine. Attrition is caused by the contact between the teeth over and above normal use. Why do we see more of it these days? This is becoming an increasingly common dental problem, with the most recent Adult Dental Health Survey suggesting that over three quarters of the UK population have some form of tooth wear (tooth decay and gum disease appear to be on the decrease whilst tooth wear is on the increase). We are seeing a paradigm shift. Teeth are being challenged in a host of new ways. People are living longer and people are retaining teeth longer. But the biggest factor is our changing diets and lifestylesarguably not for the good of our teeth. The acid source can be from the diet- an increasing problem with people adopting healthier diets high in fruits, as well as the army of carbonated drinks so readily available. The source can also be from stomach- Pregnant women suffering from severe morning sickness, or people suffering from gastrooesophageal reflux disease (GORD) or hiatus hernia may show signs of dental erosion. It is also a problem in individuals who suffer from certain eating disorders (e.g., anorexia, bulimia) Examples causing abrasion include vigorous tooth brushing, using too much toothpaste, or
adopting a coarse diet. It is due to the harmful effects of the combination of erosion and abrasion that we advise you to wait at least an hour before brushing your teeth; if an acidic substance such as orange juice has come into contact with the teeth, this softened outer layer of the tooth can be easily removed by toothbrushing. Waiting an hour allows saliva to act, buffering the mouth and encouraging this softened outer layer to remineralise (and harden). Unfortunately, attrition is becoming increasingly common, with more and more individuals finding they grind or clench their teeth, linked to the fast pace and intensity, and for many the stress, of today’s lifestyles. In combination with erosion and abrasion, quite severe damage to teeth may result. When do you realise it is a problem? Teeth can become short and unattractive as well as feeling sharp, rough or sensitive. Even speaking or chewing can become a problem and some people also experience jaw and muscle discomfort. How are we able to help you? We cannot stress enough the importance of early diagnosis. Most importantly this enables us to identify your risk factors, implement preventative advice and monitor it. The Art of Grieving L
oss can be scary in any form. However, the loss of a loved one is often the hardest forms of grief that many of us experience at some point in our life. Each individual grieves in their own way; and adjusts to the changes of loss in their own time. Often times I am asked, “ Is it normal for me to still feel so sad after 6 months?” The only truthful and reliable answer is, “yes.” Grief is subjective and dependent of each individual’s life situation and circumstances. What is “normal” in regards to loss is entirely up to the person that has experienced the loss. For example, a mother who has lost her child will grieve differently; than a granddaughter who lost her grandmother who raised her. There is however a flip side to this. As clinicians we understand that sadness related to loss can take place for months if not years. One can feel the sentiments and absence from their loss for as long as it takes them to heal from it. However, adjustment to loss becomes a problem with a substantial time has passed and the loss has started impacting your mental, emotional, physical and social state. For example after a few weeks or months: • You cannot leave your house to get groceries • You are having panic attacks that happen at any time of the day, limiting your ability to work. • You start self-harming. • You feel suicidal or homicidal These are just a few things that may be of concern related to adjustment and grieving after a loss. Depression after loss again is subjective to the person going through it. Each of us heals at very

different levels; therefore, clinicians take this into consideration when working with someone in sessions. The NHS uses these guidelines to help one see the signs of grief: • Shock and numbness – this is usually the first reaction to the death, and people often speak of being in a daze • Overwhelming sadness, with lots of crying • Tiredness or exhaustion • Anger – for example, towards the person who died, their illness, or God • Guilt – for example, guilt about feeling angry, about something you said or didn’t say, or about not being able to stop your loved one dying
