he end of every year tends to be a time for reflecting on the past 12 months and preparing for the new year ahead. Sustainable Christmas with Stubbings

uestions are often raised regarding sustainability when buying a cut Christmas tree. After all, cutting down trees appears to be the very antithesis of sustainability in a world battling with deforestation and climate change. Artificial trees are not the answer. Such trees must be reused at least 10 times before their carbon footprint becomes less than buying equivalent fresh cut trees. This year Stubbings are addressing concerns of sustainability with a new relationship with ‘One Tree Planted’. One Tree Planted is a US based charity with a mission to help global reforestation efforts. For each Christmas tree sold at Stubbings, one tree will be planted in the Amazon region by One Tree Planted. In addition Stubbings sell UK grown trees (where possible) and ensure they are sustainably sourced. For each tree cut another is replanted in its place.

ecember will be a time to gather our thoughts and loved ones for well overdue celebration all be it under restrictive measures. In times of need a little comfort in food goes a long way and this chocolate delice recipe should bring a smile to your face and cheer the soul. Made a day in advance this would be a great
dessert to pull out when family are gathered. A generous spoon of creme fraiche will sit nicely with this and perhaps a little citrus salad of fresh orange and grapefruit segments dressed in a teaspoon of olive oil, picked fresh mint , and the excess citrus juices adjusted to taste with a pinch of sugar or for that ultimate festive finish just a touch of luxurious gold leaf!
RECIPE: DARK CHOCOLATE MOUSSE DELICE Ingredients Serves 8 • Chocolate Mousse • 110g dark chocolate 70% • 3 egg yolk • 45g caster sugar • 120ml milk • 1.5 sheets gelatine
Method Genoise Sponge 1. Whisk the eggs and caster sugar for 5 minutes until it is ribbon then add the vanilla pod seeds. 2. Sieve flour thoroughly and fold into the mixture 3. Spread on to trays and cover the sponge with silicon paper. 4. Bake at 170 degrees in the fan oven for 8 minutes. 5. After the sponge has cooled down, cut it and fit the base on to a pop up bottom 8 inch tray lined with silicone paper. Chocolate Mousse 1. Soak the gelatin leaves in some cold water for about 5 minutes until soft. 2. Whisk the caster sugar and egg yolks until it is ribbon. 3. Heat the milk to 55 degrees and add the gelatin. Pass the liquid through a sieve to avoid lumps. 4. Pour the combined milk

• 160ml double cream • Genoise Sponge • 125g plain flour • 125g caster sugar • 3 eggs • 1 vanilla pod • Small sheet of gold leave to decorate and gelatine over the sugar and egg yolks mixture and whisk thoroughly. 5. Bring the mixture slowly up to 83 degrees whilst whisking it continuously and then pour it over the dark chocolate. Mix well. 6. Leave chocolate mix to cool for 5 minutes. 7. Whisk double cream until semi whipped and combine with the chocolate mix. 8. Pour the chocolate mousse over the Genoise Sponge and place in the fridge to chill and allow it to set for at least 2 hours. 9. Pop it out of the tray and place it on a board. Pull the silicone paper away from the sides and slice into 8 tranches finish with a small piece of gold leaf and cut with a wet knife and serve To serve 1. The delice can be served just on its own with crème fraiche or works really well with grapefruit segments and a citrus sorbet to give contrasting sharp flavours with the lusciousness of the chocolate.

AVOIDING THE CHRISTMAS FEUD – CO-PARENTING TIPS
A
s a family lawyer I often see separated families struggle to agree arrangements for Christmas holidays. Christmas is the ultimate family time and it can be heartbreaking for parents to accept their children may not spend time with them. Here are my top tips to help reduce Christmas tension: • Those all-important school dates - the last day of term or Christmas play - make sure you both have information as early as possible. • Discuss arrangements well in advance so that you, and the children, know what is happening. Consider recording agreed dates in writing - less chance for a misunderstanding! • Generally, Christmas Day is alternated annually between separated parents, although some do manage to share the day. A popular alternating arrangement is Christmas Day/Boxing Day with one parent and New Year’s Eve/ Day with the other parent. Work out a fair arrangement based on how the Christmas holiday falls. • Consider video and telephone calls – getting the children to call the other parent on the big day if possible. 38 DECEMBER 2020
• Talk about present buying – make sure it isn’t a competition, and maybe even consider buying gifts from the children to the other parent, which can be positive. • Try to respect the other parent’s religious beliefs and traditions. • Small gestures go a long way - packing the child’s bag, getting them to bed early the night before they return to the other parent. • Consider the longer term – if children are young, there will be many years ahead as coparents. Make communication easy for you both – perhaps use a specific email address, contact diary or shared electronic diary, or make use of parenting apps (eg. OurFamilyWizard or Cozi). • Keep “grown-up talk” out of ear shot of children, try not to criticise the other parent. • Consider third party support - mediation or family therapy are both useful for agreeing parenting principles. • The Child and Family Court Advisory Service (CAFCASS) has produced a template parenting plan - a written document worked out between parents setting down what each parent expects of the other when the child is in their care. Pianist Clare Hammond opens the Festival in Princes Risborough with a solo programme inspired by her work in prisons, featuring Brahms and Rachmaninov. Parental Alienation
P
arental alienation is a term that can often be used by parents without much thought as to the impact making such a claim can have. But whilst it is a term that is thrown into disputes when issues arise regarding arrangements for a separating couple’s children, there are times when genuine alienation causes real harm to both children and families. What is parental alienation? Parental alienation is the estrangement of a child, or children, from one of their parents as a result of the actions and manipulation of the other parent. The process of alienation, which is most often undertaken by the parent who has the more frequent care duties, has a number of manifestations which can include disrespectful behaviour, hostility and sometimes fear towards one parent. The issue of parental alienation is of growing concern within the family courts and it is viewed by many as a form of child abuse. Under the laws of England and Wales, all children have the right to know and have a relationship with both their parents and where there are no welfare concerns, contact should be supported by both parents. The impact on children When relationships break down, children can often become the ‘weapon’ and find themselves dragged into the middle of parental conflict, with one parent alienating the children from the other. In the case of Re A (Children) (Parental alienation) the mother’s campaign of alienation was described by the Judge as “demonising” and “alienating”, leaving the children suffering “significant and long-term emotional harm”. The psychological effects of alienation on children can be extremely severe and long lasting. In the case of Re H (parental alienation), the Judge stated that if the mother continued to alienate the child from his father than this would “impede his [the child’s] ability to form meaningful and positive relationships now and in the future. It may cause him to suffer depression in later life”. He spoke of the damage that would have been done to the child’s emotional and mental wellbeing, such as identity crises and poor self-esteem.

Recognising alienation Legal practitioners need to be alert to the issue of parental alienation, and the repercussions it can have on a child if it isn’t detected and addressed. However, identifying parental alienation is not always easy, particularly at the early stages of proceedings; damage to the emotional wellbeing of the child can be done before the underlying cause of this damage is identified. Legal advisers will need to consider the particular circumstances of a case where parental alienation may be occurring, and gather, from an appropriate expert, the expert opinion as to why issues in a parent/ child relationship are occurring. If these steps are taken early enough and obstruction of contact is dealt with effectively, then any further damage to the wellbeing of the child may be avoided.

It offers a look behind the many brands of Christmas gifts, interiors, plants, crafts, food and wine, whilst encouraging shoppers to spend their money locally. Brainchild of local businesswoman, Jan Foo, The Vendary is a professionally-filmed daily live show streamed across the social media platforms of Facebook and Instagram. Local retailers across the towns of St Albans, Berkhamsted and Tring can book a half hour slot, completely free of charge, to demonstrate, talk about, show off, and display what they do. Think online shopping channel, like QVC. However, there is nothing hard sell about The Vendary which instead, aims to share the person behind the business and to offer a ‘sneak peek’ behind the brand. Independent shops, restaurants and cafes will have to change how they attract new customers and build customer loyalty by looking for new creative opportunities. One way of doing this is to take their bricks and mortar businesses online and to leverage the power of social media. However, this can be expensive, time consuming and challenging, as not everyone knows where to start. ‘Collaboration is how we work as a human race, so the concept of a collective business platform made good sense to me, and The Vendary was born,’ said Jan Foo. ‘Turning to the social media networks to boost sales, we wanted to create a visual platform that was unique, entertaining and creative. ‘We’re asking everyone to watch the shows on

here can be few better ways to blow away the cobwebs than with a good walk on a Cornish beach, perhaps with a faithful hound at your side. Such was the experience of Sandy Wallis of Perranporth with her very obedient Rhodesian Ridgeback,
Roscoe. Sandy was keen to have the right footwear for the job: durable, comfortable and waterproof. Thwarted in her quest to find the perfect dog walking footwear she decided to create her own dream pair of boots. “We walk every day in all weathers” says Sandy but I just could not find a pair of boots that were comfy and would keep my feet warm and dry. Hiking boots didn’t cope well with those deep muddy puddles and wellies are not really suitable for a 5 mile hike”. Having rummaged around in her cupboard, Sandy found an old pair of “riggers” which are safety boots originally designed for the North Sea Oil riggers. “I started wearing them to walk the dog and they were amazing. I thought it would be good to design my own ‘off rig’ version that were lighter and with an excellent hiking sole. The result is a very stylish, practical boot suitable for both men and women. WHY HANDWASHING IS SO IMPORTANT
R
ight now, during the COVID-19 pandemic, regular handwashing is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of the virus and avoid yourself and others getting ill. The way you wash your hands is especially important, scrubbing the palms, back of hands, in-between fingers and underneath the fingernails and jewellery gets to all the places where germs can get missed. Be sure to lather with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or more – the equivalent of singing ‘Happy Birthday’ twice - and dry your hands with a clean towel or air dry them. Washing your hands just with water is a good way of removing dirt and is better than not washing them at all, but washing with soap and water is generally the best way to get rid of germs. Whether you are at home, work, or out-and-about in the community, there are usually ample opportunities for handwashing, but if facilities are not readily available then use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser which you can carry with you. Make sure it contains at least 60% alcohol though, and remember, sanitisers don’t

get rid of all types of germs so choose soap and water when you can
Here’s why handwashing is effective: • Washing hands prevents illnesses and the spread of infection to others when touching other objects or preparing food and drink • Germs enter the body through the eyes, mouth and nose, so keeping hands clean and reducing the amount of times you touch your face will help reduce infection • Cleaning hands with soap and water removes multiple types of germs • Handwashing helps battle the rise in antibiotic resistance by keeping infection rates down Looking after the skin on your hands is also important. You may find that increasing hand washing makes the skin drier and even slightly irritated. Be sure to apply a water-based absorbent hand cream 3 or 4 times daily to keep skin moisturised. Consult a doctor if skin irritation develops or continues. Washing your hands is a simple but very effective way to protect you and your family.

Symptoms of gallstones not to ignore during the pandemic
O
ne of the hardest problems we face during the current crisis is when to call the doctor. There is a duty we all share not to overburden a stress health system, but also one we owe to ourselves and our family to look after ourselves. It is generally true that most surgical conditions are best treated before the symptoms become severe or complicated by such things as sepsis (infection), obstruction (blockage) or dissemination (spread to other tissues). This article is a guide to avoiding these in one common abdominal condition. A common condition I treat is gallstones. Gallstones are crystal of bile that form within the gallbladder. They can cause chronic symptoms of upper abdominal pain, nausea, heartburn, acid reflux and/or bloating. The symptoms are typically intermittent and worsened by fatty food but a small proportion of patients can be continuous and severe and triggered by almost any food. Atypical symptoms of gallstones can be abdominal cramps, chest pain of a non-cardiac origin, palpitations, diarrhoea, early fullness after meals (early satiety) and left sided abdominal pain.
“If a stone jams in the neck of the gallbladder it can cause a more acute pain (biliary colic) or lead to infection (acute cholecystitis): Gallstones are do not usually need treatment unless they cause patient symptoms. However, these can build (crescendo) as the stones grow over time, from almost insignificant to very severe. As an analogy, if you break your arm the loss of function is immediately noticed. If things build up gradually as gallstone symptoms can, we often we put the symptoms down to ‘getting old’ or ‘being less able to cope with things than I used to’. Like unassuming people, we often work round these manageable symptoms using symptomatic treatments or avoiding things that provoke attacks. If a stone jams in the neck of the gallbladder it can cause a more acute pain (biliary colic) or lead to infection (acute cholecystitis). These are relative 74 DECEMBER 2020
indications for cholecystectomy (removal of the gallbladder, usually by keyhole surgery). In this case surgery is an option to prevent further attacks. Further migration of stones in to the bile ducts can cause yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice) or severe back pain and vomiting due to pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas). These are often absolute indications for removal of the gallbladder as a way of preventing potentially serious or life-threatening complications. Surgery is a highly successful treatment for gallstones and its complications. All surgery has risks but these can be minimized by performing an operation in a controlled or elective setting where risk factors are optimized. This may include a special diet to help shrink the liver so surgery is safer in obese patients. In many cases surgery is a day-case procedure and full recovery to normal activity in 1-3 weeks. Where emergency surgery is performed complications such as infections and slower recovery are more common. It is not uncommon for people to report after gallbladder removal for gallstones how long they had put up with symptoms that they thought they were stuck with and an improvement in general health. It is a very satisfying condition for a surgeon to treat.

usannah Weiland Collections produces handcrafted designs for luxury interiors. Susannah is a hand embroidery artist and a keen wild life photographer. She studied Graphic Design at university and has spent 20 years working in the fashion industry as a freelance textile print designer. Keen to learn new skills and try different creative mediums she had taken many evening and weekend courses in everything from oil painting and life drawing to perspex jewellery making and tapestry. Her grandmother first introduced her to hand embroidery as a child, and after taking a short course years later she was hooked! ‘Chinese Feng Shui’ for the New Year

otterell & Co. have gone back to their roots to over 65 years ago in lampshade manufacture. We are now reinventing bespoke lighting by utilizing innovative techniques, new materials, in-house design and long-standing relationships. The result is exclusivity combined with endless variety, successfully tapping into the zeitgeist for all things bespoke. If you are looking to add some Chinese Inspired Lighting and Home Decor in time to celebrate the Chinese New Year, here at Cotterell & Co we have some bespoke hand made products that will add those warm inviting touches to your home just in time. One of our Interior Designers picked out a collection of products featuring Rustic Oranges, Reds, Florals and much more. The meaning on ‘Feng Shui’ actually comes from ancient Chinese beliefs, that the way your home or house is built or the way that you arrange objects affects your success, health and happiness. This term was the inspiration for our small collection. Here we have added our Giraffe Lamp with an Orange Shade. This inspired us from history going as far back as 1414. A Giraffe - a unknown creature at the time in china- was presented to an Emperor who immediately associated it with the qilin, an auspicious mythical creature. Next, we have our Moooi Menagerie of Extinct Animals Bespoke Shade. The print celebrates extinct animals. The creatures are nestled amongst the outsize foliage picked out in stunningly vibrant colours. Our inspiration for the next lamp was the Traditional Asian Rice Hat. Our bespoke tapered shade is shaped in a similar way.

Get In Bed With Great British Design With more time at home becoming the norm, interiors across the UK are getting more than their fair share of attention and none more so than the bedroom.
I
n recent years, the bedroom has gained popularity as the place to retreat, relax and escape from the rat race. And, these days, we need that more than ever. If a change would help you to rest better, then a luxurious, new upholstered bed has to be this years’ remedy for a boring bedroom … The feature bed is back! What’s more, the current economic situation has been challenging manufacturers and creative minds to work together and breathe new life into our interiors, promoting a spirit of teamwork and great British pluck. Exciting collaborations between innovative designers and makers are, currently serving up the best of British design in the face of uncertainty. One notable recent creative partnership is that of The Headboard Workshop with fabric designer, Charlotte Gaisford. The power pair set about designing the new Puffin Bed over the summer, exchanging ideas, sketches and designs. The outcome? A gloriously cheerful upholstered bed in a beautiful colour palette with feminine curves and modern lines. “The bed really has become the place in the

bedroom to stamp your style” says Laura KelwayBamber, creative director at The Headboard Workshop. “There are so many amazing materials on the market now that the sky is the limit. We make more than 18 styles of bed in over 150 plain fabrics or people can send us their own … which is how our relationship with Charlotte Gaisford first came to our attention”. Laura adds that with the trend for upholstered beds and headboards on the climb in recent years, they have received so many beautiful fabrics from Charlotte Gaisford’s stunning collections for upholstery, that it was high time the two of them got together to do something spectacular. The result of which is the new Puffin Bed in Sharanshar Green. Piped in a lively co-ordinating coral colour, the Sharanshar Green pattern is eye catching and pretty, making an exceptionally beautiful bed, its beauty, only outshined by its elevated level of comfort when paired with the Sark Mattress.
