Sole trader or limited company?

Boss your own business Starting your own venture can be hugely exciting – but it’s important to consider the challenges you might face. B P Collins law firm in Gerrards Cross offers some key advice.

14 DECEMBER 2018

It’s important to recognise that if you are a sole trader then everything you own will be at risk, should you have a dispute with a client or supplier, whereas trading through a limited company should protect personal assets. It’s also important to limit your liability in any contract under which you will provide your services.

Payment terms Money can be tight when running your own business. Make sure that you set out your payment terms in your contract with clients so you know when you will be paid. It is also absolutely vital to be aware of the tax implications of being self-employed. You will have to retain money to meet tax, as this may not deducted from what is paid to you.

Working with friends or family Choosing the right colleague is key as, for every success story, there are many more great ideas and partnerships which fall by the wayside. Going into business with someone you know is in many ways similar to entering into marriage – you both need to ask yourself serious questions about your relationship, aims and objectives before working together. Some key questions for potential new business partners are: • Do you trust each other and respect each other’s decisions? • Is your relationship strong enough to handle the low points as well as the highs? • Have you sought professional advice on legal and business issues? It is also advisable to decide on who will be the key decision-maker, where the finance will come from and what will happen if the investment isn’t successful from the outset. Sitting down together

and having these discussions can focus the mind on what you each want to achieve from the business and help to avoid any potential disputes.

Protecting your family If you’re acting as a sole trader, there is usually no formal business structure in place. So if you become incapacitated, it is unlikely that your business will continue to be able to operate because the assets of that business will become inaccessible by third parties. The way around this is to have a lasting power of attorney (LPA) in place. You might wish to appoint your spouse or, if it’s a more complex business, a trusted colleague who is familiar with the business to take over as your attorney. If you’re trading through a limited company, you would need to ensure that your Articles of Association contain appropriate provisions to deal with succession to running the company, as the role of director cannot be delegated through the LPA. If you leave a will, then you can make clear who should inherit your business on your death, otherwise the intestacy rules may result in ownership passing in a way which was not intended. If a self-employed person becomes incapacitated, the name on the business bank account will determine how it can be accessed by a family member. If it’s in an individual’s name, acting as a sole trader, an attorney under an LPA can normally have access to the account. If it’s in the company’s name, then a new director would need to be appointed. Planning ahead and asking yourself some difficult questions at the start are vital. A new way for business owners to manage their wealth and legacy

I

n a world where technology is rapidly changing, and wealth and assets are becoming increasingly fragmented, managing your legacy and understanding the value of your family’s assets is not simple. Experts from Royds Withy King look at some of the issues their clients encounter. Gone are the days where the family home and a few investments in the latest pharmaceutical company are the sum of a family’s wealth. Legacy planning now has to accommodate information about your business interests, intellectual property, social media, betting and credit accounts, online investments, cryptocurrencies, blogs, domain names, online books and other original works, increasingly complicated inheritance tax laws, capital gains tax and strict landlord obligations on property portfolios. Deanna Hurst, partner in the Private Client team at Royds Withy King, says, “Bereaved families I advise often have to deal with a fragmented estate where the executors are not clear on where or what assets there are and what their value is. Digital assets, investment in unusual collectables and online investments all contribute to a very complicated pot. This is where Life Safe comes in.” Life Safe® - a unique portal for your life and your legacy Life Safe is a secure portal to store all your important documents available exclusively to Royds Withy King clients. You can consolidate all

Business owners can also use Life Safe to store documents relating to their business interests such as share certificates, loan note certificates, service contracts and shareholders’ agreements. Deanna says, “Life Safe helps our clients with complex wealth structures gain a complete wealth overview and to manage their legacy. They can leave detailed notes and visual records of their assets to make sure their affairs are left in good order for beneficiaries and use Life Safe as an invaluable hub to store important information for their family. For example, if copies of passports are needed urgently or details about the mortgage are required, my clients and their partners will know exactly where to find these important documents. They can even do so on the move with mobile access.”

Christmas

It’s all jolly, isn’t it? M

any of us will now be looking forward to the festive period with the buildup beforehand and the festive days themselves. However, for many others, the Christmas period is not such a happy time, particularly if a relationship or marriage has come to an end or if it looks like it might do so. For those with children, there are also often issues regarding the arrangements for the children over Christmas which need to be discussed and agreed with the former spouse or partner. Indeed, the festive period generally can put additional strain on many people when making arrangements to spend time with family and friends but this can be even more testing if the whereabouts of children during those times has yet to be agreed between parents. I therefore set out some tips below which may be useful when trying to agree the Christmas arrangements for your children.

Communication during Christmas

There is often a temptation to use Christmas (particularly the first one after a separation) to make a point to your former partner or spouse about how well you and the children are doing following the separation. However, this is only likely to increase animosity between you and it is almost certain that it will not benefit the children. Therefore, my tip for communication during this period is to keep it to a minimum, potentially with messages limited to dealing with the children’s arrangements only. Also, a simple message to the other parent when you have the children over Christmas about the children having a nice time should be fine but there is no need for the message to dwell on any other point or for it to imply that you or the children are not missing the other parent.

Arrangements for children at Christmas

For any parents thinking about the arrangements for their children over Christmas, it is understandable if this feels difficult to address with your former spouse or partner. My first tip for dealing with the children’s arrangements over the festive period and, 26 DECEMBER 2018

in particular, for the festive days themselves is to bear in mind that Christmas for the children can usually be enjoyed over several days rather than on Christmas Day alone. Therefore, if you are the parent who may not be spending Christmas Day with the children this year, then try not to worry about this. Instead, try to make the most of your time with the children on the day(s) you will be spending with them which may include a full repeat of Christmas Day or at least a repeat of some of the activities from Christmas Day. Certainly, it would be hard to imagine any children being disappointed by the prospect of having more than one Christmas Day.

Compromise

Another tip is to be prepared to compromise on some aspects of the arrangements in order to reach an agreement with the other parent. It is after all the season of goodwill and compromise is often the key to reaching an agreement. Legal advice Finally, if you are concerned about being able to reach an agreement with your former partner or spouse about the arrangements for the children over Christmas or if discussions have not yet led to an agreement, then you may wish to consider taking legal advice about this. As solicitors, we are used to advising on arrangements for children over Christmas and will be able to assist you with this. Your solicitor will also be able to consider with you the methods by which you may be able to negotiate a settlement with the other parent, including through solicitors, at mediation or, if necessary, by way of a Court application. We are always happy to assist with such matters. The key, however, is that the earlier you seek legal advice, the more useful it is likely to be. This joyous new musical shares the incredible real-life story of the 7,000 air passengers from all over the world who were grounded in Canada during the wake of 9/11, and the small Newfoundland community that invited these ‘come from aways’ into their lives. Based on interviews with the real people who were in Gander during this time, Come From Away creators David Hein and Irene Sankoff tell over 16,000 stories over the course of 5 days in 100 minutes using 12 actors. First Christmas post-separation? Our recipe for a peaceful family life

Emma McMorrow

C

hristmas is a time for families to spend together but what if you have recently separated or divorced? Sadly, it can become a difficult time with all the usual stresses of Christmas amplified and the added worry of keeping the children happy. Emma McMorrow and Vandana Chitroda from the Family Law team at Royds Withy King provide five tips to help you manage the festive period.

3. Don’t forget the wider family You may no longer be on good terms with your ex-partner’s family but that does not mean that your children shouldn’t have a good relationship with them. Be as considerate as you can about making arrangements so that your children can see grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins too. That may well mean that you factor in travelling time if families live some way away.

1. Your children really do want time with each of you Try and put the acrimony on hold and make sure that arrangements are made so that your children’s time over the Christmas and New Year period is divided between you. Perhaps a move mid-way through Christmas Day, or Christmas Day with one parent and New Year celebrations with the other. If you’re doing it that way consider alternating so that you have Christmas one year and New Year the next.

4. It’s not a competition Try and find a way of communicating in advance so that you agree who is going to buy what for the children. If you don’t and they get two of the thing they most wanted then you have paved the way for an argument about which toy gets returned after Boxing Day. Don’t try and be the one who gives the greatest number of presents. Again, that’s likely only to lead to a dispute particularly if money is tight.

2. Make arrangements early on and be ready to compromise Trying to agree arrangements just before the end of the Christmas term puts unnecessary pressure on both parents. The earlier you think about it, the more likely it is that you’ll be able to come to an agreement that each of you is comfortable with. Remember, if your children spend most of their time with you, do not work on the basis that you can simply dictate what is going to happen over the Christmas period. Be ready to compromise. 30 DECEMBER 2018

5. Be sensitive about new relationships Be sensitive about introducing new partners to your children and consider your timing carefully. If only one of you has a new partner, Christmas is probably about the worst time you could think of to introduce your partner to your children for the first time, especially if your ex-partner knows nothing about it. If the children head off to see one parent and suddenly talk about the other’s new partner, this could be a recipe for disaster. If you are going through a divorce or separation, taking professional advice from a Family Law solicitor can help alleviate uncertainty and help you make arrangements for your children.

Santa Baby…

It’s that time old question that we all get asked at this time of the year, “What would you like for Christmas?” This year I’m going to explore and see what makes my heart smile from padded rooms to books, coats to diamonds and everything else in between…

Dancing feet

I’m Absolutely Fine! This book had me laughing out loud. Soak up the true and humorous way “Midulthood” is addressed. A must-have for girls aged 35-55. Authors Annabel Rivkin and Emilie McMeekan write a Midult column in the Saturday Telegraph Magazine. I asked them what they would ask Santa for. Annabel: A portable vortex to howl into and some proper earrings. I’m thinking hoops from Cult Gaia or something diamond-y from Jessica McCormack. Emilie: Mmmm, a phone cover that gives me a (mild) electric shock when I touch it, and a velvet suit from Bella Freud. I’m Absolutely Fine!: A Manual for Imperfect Women by Annabel Rivkin & Emilie McMeekan. £16.99; Available from all good bookshops. Podcast – I’m Absolutely Fine! Is available on iTunes www.themidult.com

It is the Christmas season and every girl needs a pair of exceptional shoes to make her feel on her A game. British fashion designer Paul Andrew has fifteen years of designing alongside other iconic designers such as, Alexander McQueen, Donna Karen and Calvin Klein. Paul debuted his Spring/ Summer 2013 collection in New York, and has gone from strength to strength. He truly has put us women at the forefront of his designs. I mean, how many designers do you know that have the insoles lined with industrial memory foam, so us ladies can dance into the early hours of the morning and still be floating on air? So look no further Ladies for Paul Andrew has answered all of our prayers! These beautifully crafted Italian Rose Gold distressed metallic calf leather Rhea sling backs with a 105mm heel, are sheer heaven and look out of this world. The Ballinrobe luxury wool winter coat, modelled here by The Countess of Lucan, in my opinion is a true investment. It has an elegant silhouette with fabulous details; including deep bellow pockets (for losing your phone in or in my case keeping my hands warm), beautiful buttons and a stunning champagne-pink lining. Lucan is definitely a designer brand to watch out for, with everything from cashmere scarves to shooting attire. A wonderful blend of country living meets uptown girl! Ballinrobe Coat; £1795. Pink Cashmere roll neck; £285. Matching beret £75. www.houseoflucan.com

I hope I’ve given you a little inspiration for this festive season.

Little piece of art I came across Solange Azagury-Partridge while playing on my Insta, and I knew I had to have a piece of her work. It’s a mini, portable, piece of art. Solange started her journey from designing her own engagement ring back in 1987. She has won numerous awards and prizes, and has been honoured with the highest prize, The Talent d’Or at the du Luxe et de la Création at the 2017 award gala. So how is a girl to choose, Scribbles or HOTLIPS from one of the hottest jewellers in town? Pink & White Band; £12,800. Diamond and lacquer ring set in 18ct white gold www.solange.co.uk. HOTLIPS in Juicy Red; £180. Sterling silver and lacquer ring www.solange.co.uk

Hunts Woman or Uptown Girl?

And Breathe… With the party season in full swing your beautiful eyes and mind will only thank you for a little tender loving care. These are a must-have for everybody this season. You get 5 individually wrapped masks, tear open and pop the loops over your ears, and breathe in the beautiful light scent of jasmine, as it gently warms up. They last around 15-20mins, but be warned, you might just fall asleep, I did! Why not treat your friends to a little down time too? £15; for a box of 5 plus p&p Available at spacemasks.com

Just one more thing, TIME, is the only thing that I would like to give to my closet friends as I feel life is so busy these days, and their TIME in return is the only thing I would like. For my sister from another Mother, THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for always being there for me, you keep me going. To my Mentor, thank you for still thinking I’m out of this world and for having kept my light going after all these years. I could thank a million people but I shan’t as you all know who you are and thank you for all teaching me something new and giving me your time, I’m truly blessed. So all that is left to say is, HAPPY CHRISTMAS everybody. I hope you all get what your heart desires. Thank you for allowing me to share. STOP, LOOK and BREATHE Until next time Ladies and Gents, have a great one! SJ x My Instagram - sksandhu79

Happy Families at Christmas? Katherine Rayden, Senior Partner Rayden Solicitors

C

hristmas is often quite the opposite, particularly if a relationship has or is about to come to an end. Perhaps it is the pressure of advertising, the work involved in the Christmas preparations or simply having everyone together, who knows? The fact remains that most family lawyers have an influx of new enquiries in January after the Christmas period. In some ways, this is a demonstration of a family working together for the sake of the children in order that they can have a happy memory of one last Christmas together; in other cases it is because there has been a crisis at Christmas that requires urgent assistance. Here are a few tips to help you this Christmas time. I have not provided detailed legal advice as Christmas is an ideal time to put the abiding legal concept of “acting in the best interests of the child” into practice.

36 DECEMBER 2018

Presents Ideally, both of you would have discussed the presents that each are buying. If not, it will soon become clear whether your child’s hint for the latest Lego was in fact made to both of you and they are now the proud owner of 2 star wars space ships. If this is the case, try not to score a perceived tactical advantage in opening yours first - be practical • Would 2 toys be a good idea? Sometimes it is, as they can play with each one in each parent’s house without worrying about packing it up • Keep the receipt!

The Big FC Mothers will often say that the children need to be at her home to wake up on Christmas day and receive their stockings. This is more of an emotional reaction to the idea of them not being there with the children that thinking of it in terms of what the children would like. It is often the case that Santa can visit both houses and leaves a stocking for the children to open when they arrive.

If you are not having the children on Christmas day and don’t feel like being with friends and family, do something else – volunteer at a hospital, go to a hotel and postpone ‘Christmas Day’ until you see the children.

Festive facebook It is not unusual for someone to leave a message on a Facebook page, or answer phone, or a mobile (particularly if alcohol is involved) but, if you are in the throes of a relationship breakdown, DON’T! If you are using solicitors or are about to ask for assistance from the Courts and/or lawyers, don’t underestimate the way in which a “witty” comment about your relationship or partner will be misconstrued.

Legal assistance

Christmas Day

Finally, if the Christmas period makes it clear that you are going to need to seek legal advice, you have two options: • Have a general discussion with your partner and see what common ground can be reached • Keep the temperature down and leave the discussions until the New Year

Children do not measure Christmas by dates and are more than happy to have more than one celebration. Don’t feel that just because you didn’t see the children on Christmas Day, you can’t make a Christmas memory a few days before or later.

Hopefully, by focussing on giving the children a happy Christmas, some part of the Christmas magic can rub off on you both. www.raydensolicitors.co.uk

VICTORIA BECKHAM & PETER PILOTTO

TAKE TO THE CAKE-WALK T he Autumn/Winter 2018 Prêt-à-Portea collection at The Berkeley is set to wow with couture cakes and boot biscuits inspired by this season’s runway highlights. A favourite with fashionistas, Prêt-àPortea adds an innovative twist to the traditional English afternoon tea bringing the latest catwalk trends to the cake-walks. This season animal print, polka dots and neon colours took the catwalk by storm. First up on the cakewalk is British fashion queen Victoria Beckham, celebrating her 10th anniversary with her signature shopping bag, legs akimbo, interpreted as, what else, but a Victoria sponge and shares a plate with royal wedding dress designer Peter Pilotto’s ubiquitous pink satin blazer biscuit straight from Beyoncé’s ‘On the Run’ tour. Tom Ford’s leopard print sequinned two-piece suit is transformed into a mint cake with chocolate bavarois and, embracing their playful side this season, Prada’s print canvas tote complete with dinosaur is reimagined as a chocolate walnut brownie and decorated with, none other than, a white chocolate stegosaurus. From dinosaurs to polka dots, Ada Kokosar’s polka dot midnight shoe is transformed into a lemon and poppy cheesecake adorned with a delicate sugar frill and Mulberry’s chic winter look becomes a pecan madeleine cake with oversized buttons and sugar pearls. A touch of colour is Valentino’s extravagant orange dress gracing the cakewalk as an orange Charlotte with citrus marmalade. Fashion favourite Erdem’s Zelena dress is interpreted as a pink lady apple mousse cake with edible silver glitter and sugar florals. And of course, taking a fashionable step forward, Fendi’s Cutwalk cowboy boots top the cakestand as a chocolate biscuit with baby blue icing.

A Price Butchers of Holtspur Parade, Beaconsfield, occupied the shop from 1957 through to 2016. Deciding that the time had come to focus on other areas of his business, including the catering, BBQ and Hog Roasts, Derek decided back in 2016 that the time had come to close the shop. With the disappointment from loyal customers and the fact that actually, he still had time on his hands Derek chose to still run a butchers but rather than the traditional retails shop that we all recognise, more of a personalised service. Derek has been running the butchers this way, predominantly over social media and word of mouth ever since. Offering high quality products at heavily reduced prices due to minimal overheads Derek is bringing the locals of Beaconsfield the standards of meat that they have always enjoyed, at amazing prices. Derek’s years of experience mean that he knows the best places to source the meat products and the marinades that he uses. Selling traditional joints, aged English beef, English lamb and English pork as standard you can expect you can expect only the best. So, how about when you want that little variation to the norm? A variety of options are available for his clients, marinated lemon chicken, teriyaki chicken, hand-made pork skewers for the BBQ, handmade sausages and other seasonal

What to get the man who already has everything?

66 DECEMBER 2018

T

he festive season is upon us and Christmas is fast approaching, so too is the annual dilemma ‘what to get the man who already has everything? ‘. Buying a gift for your nearest and dearest is even more challenging if you haven’t been given any helpful hints. So where to start… Practical items are usually a safe bet, shirts, ties, scarfs, fragrance or the ubiquitous socks are always useful. For that ‘someone special’ however, something special might be especially appreciated. The finest Scottish cashmere, Dubarry boots, for example, or maybe a Kronaby hybrid smart watch. Gifts that they may not think to get for themselves, we have plenty of great gift that any man would be delighted to find under the tree this year. In the unlikely event that things aren’t quite right, then returning or exchanging them to us is as easy as pie, or perhaps pudding. We are also happy to gift wrap your purchases for you, saving you another job at this busy time of year. So that’s Christmas all wrapped up in Wendover. Getting ready for hospital T

he news that your child requires an admission to hospital for a procedure or operation can be an anxious time for any parent. The amount and type of information you might want to give them to prepare them for their visit will, most likely, be dictated by your child’s age and their ability to take in what you’re are telling them. However, it is important to remember that every child is an individual and each is liable to react in a different way. One thing to point out is that although it is only natural for you to be anxious you must try not to transfer your own anxiety to your child. Even quite young children can cope remarkably well with hospital admissions.

70 DECEMBER 2018

Hospital can be a daunting place to visit for adults, let alone children. Here, Spire Thames Valley Hospital’s Children and Young Peoples lead Katy Parker gives some useful advice to parents preparing to take their children into hospital:

Once a date has been booked you will often be contacted by the hospital. Many, like Spire Thames Valley Hospital, provide a pre-admission visit which is a useful way to introduce the child or young person to the hospital environment and meet some of the staff who will care for them. Our visits always take place at weekends, so no time out of school is required, and the hospital is quiet. If this isn’t feasible, then there are many other ways of introducing your child to what they might expect when they are in hospital. These can include story books and videos of characters your children may well know from the CBBC channel visiting a hospital. A video available on YouTube called ‘A Little Deep Sleep,’ tells of a child’s visit to hospital through a cartoon character. This is aimed at children of primary school age. Young people aged 11-17 often find hospital admission more worrying and it may be beneficial to discourage them from over-using the internet as a source of information. It may also be helpful to explain that hospital stories told to them by friends may be “slightly exaggerated” to say the least. As a parent, you would be fully involved in all aspects of your child’s care, and be required to consent to any procedures. At 16 years of age, young people are deemed to be able to consent legally, but consent verbally should be obtained from children of all ages where possible. You will meet many different staff depending on the procedure planned and all should be identifiable by identity or name badges. They should be able to answer questions from both you or your child so if there is something on your mind ask them about it. You will remain with

your child as much as is practicable, so if the visit includes an operation you will be there until they are asleep and will also be at their bedside when they wake in the recovery unit. When thinking about what to bring to hospital, look for something your child finds comforting – for younger children their favourite cuddly toy is always a winner. For older children a phone or tablet which allows them onto the internet is a good way to keep their minds occupied. Of course, traditional things such as books – either to read or to colour in – are still very popular choices. Make sure night clothes are light and comfortable and slippers and a dressing gown are often useful. At Spire Thames Valley Hospital, we see children of all ages in our outpatients department but only undertake procedures on those over the age of three years old and above. Our consultants specialise in a variety of conditions including paediatric surgery and orthopaedic conditions in our centre of clinical excellence, but ear, nose and throat cases such as the insertion of grommets and tonsillectomies are probably the most common procedures. As parents, it’s important you have all your questions answered to ensure you can prepare properly for your child’s admission to hospital. Therefore, having time with your paediatric nurse is important and is something we strive to ensure all parents have at Spire Thames Valley Hospital. Katy Parker is our leading Children and Young Peoples Nurse here at Spire Thames Valley Hospital. If you would like book an appointment to see a paediatrician, simply call us on 01753 665 404.

Whether your goal is to improve your skin health, reduce fines lines and wrinkles, sculpt your body by removing stubborn pockets of fat, or simply to look less tired, our multi-award winning, surgeon-led clinic has a customised treatment plan for you. We believe the fundamental basis of a successful aesthetic procedure or skincare treatment is a good quality consultation with a skilled, qualified practitioner who fully understands your needs, and looks at your treatment as a journey, not a one-off event.

Then we tailor a treatment plan designed around your needs, goals and lifestyle. During your in-depth consultation, you have the opportunity to highlight any areas concerning you, whether these are skin conditions such as acne, pigmentation or rosacea, or worries about signs of ageing and a desire to rejuvenate your skin. Your skin will then be analysed by a state-of-the-art 3D digital skin imaging system called the VISIA, which takes surface and sub-surface images of your skin and develops a detailed complexion analysis.

STAY HEALTHY THIS DECEMBER! By Riccardo di Cuffa, founder and GP at Your Doctor

Q. Everyone overeats at Christmas but is it really that bad or should I go ahead with a clear conscience and just enjoy myself ? A. “The average British person eats 6,000 calories on Christmas Day which can put a huge strain on the intestine and even potentially your heart, not to mention your waistline! It is a day to relax and enjoy yourself with friends and family but having a little of everything rather than stockpiling your plate is a good way to make sure you don’t miss out but don’t pile on the pounds at the same time. A good way to think is you will only have to work out harder to lose the extra weight again!” Q. I hate Christmas because it’s actually so stressful. How can I make it easier? A. “The Christmas period is supposed to be stress free and time for friends and family, but sometimes hosting can feel less like good tidings and more like exhausting stress. We are not Christmas elves and can’t be endlessly busy without getting burnt out. Share the hosting and make sure you take some time out to just rejuvenate and destress. Be conscious of people who might be feeling lonely at this time.” Q. I drink a lot of alcohol in December. Is it bad to have lots of hangovers in one month? A. “We all like to feel jolly during the Christmas period, however lashings of mulled wine and cranberry-based cocktails may seem like a good idea until we get a gigantic hangover, overburden

74 DECEMBER 2018

our immune system with lack of sleep and feel run down. It is estimated that young adults drink the equivalent of an average of 30 glasses of wine in the run-up to Christmas. Think about how much alcohol you are drinking on nights out, or in for that matter, and have some water in-between alcoholic drinks. Also have alcohol free days. Your liver and waistline will thank you!” Q. Can you really catch a cold from not dressing warmly enough in the winter? A. “You can’t catch a cold unless you have been exposed to one of over 200 viruses that can cause the common cold; cold weather won’t make any difference. However, your mum was right when she told you to wear your coat outside, even if it is covering up your gorgeous Christmas party outfit. Underdressing can lead to frostbite and hypothermia.” Q. There is too much going on, can I take a break from exercising in December,? A. “Exercising isn’t many people’s choice of activity amongst the Christmas celebrations and eat-allyou-can winter buffets but try to keep up your exercising regime, no matter what the weather as it boosts your immune system and keeps you fit and healthy. Knowing you are going to have to go to the gym might help you limit over-eating as more food means you need to exercise more! Plan lots of lovely winter walks over the festive season.” www.your-doctor.co.uk. 0330 088 2020

Sugar-coated surrealism in Sketch-style interiors A

dd instant Insta-kudos with Cult Furniture’s latest collection, which combines the heady surrealism of oversized shapes, a PeptoBismol palette and glam metallic accents. The collection echoes the iconic interior ethos of Sketch Gallery and Restaurant, Mayfair - often described as one of the most ‘grammable eateries in town. The star of the showcase collection is the plush Evelyn Accent Chair. Standing glamorously on four black legs, the art deco style chair is upholstered in blossom pink velvet. A beautifully scalloped cocoon of a seat, the Evelyn bears more than a passing likeness to the dining chairs at Sketch, which were specifically designed to resemble a French sponge finger dessert! This occasional chair is the perfect place to relax with a glass of wine, or if you’re feeling fancier (and you will be), a sparkling champagne. The Evelyn Accent Chair ticks all the boxes if you’re looking to add a boudoir feel to your bedroom, living room, or even to complement your existing hotel lobby furniture. Available in a range of colours from pink to teal and with the choice of black or brass leg finish, this show stopping chair will emit glamour wherever it’s placed. While the walls of Sketch are famously filled with Shrigley sketches, Cult ramps up the cinematic surrealism with the greyscale Cult Living Desert Cactus Art Print Framed Poster. The muted grey hues will add a drama to your décor, reminiscent of old school Westerns, while the contrasting gold frame will put a contemporary spin on the piece. Create an industrial lighting statement with the Vega Oversized Metal Pendant Light in copper. The warm metallic façade

with a retro twinge is perfect for capturing the 40’s brasserie feel. With cable and ceiling fixture included, you can group a few together or select one for a stand out look. With its large domed shape, the Vega will accentuate features in your home with its concentrated flow of light from its domed shade. An ideal choice for hanging over dining tables and cosy reading chairs. The Cloud Modern Clock exudes style and adds an air of cool sophistication to any room it’s placed in. In fact, it’s so cool it doesn’t even need numbers. The minimalist design is a beautiful composition of copper and light grey, which chimes perfectly with the Sketch aesthetic while letting the character pieces do the talking. Details are the key to acing avant-garde Sketch flamboyance, so bling up your table-setting with the Home Features Gold Cutlery. The chic and stylish Gold set of 4 cutlery pieces is so elegant that you’ll feel like royalty using it at the dining table. Cast from solid stainless steel with a gold finish, this four-piece cutlery set includes a dinner fork, a knife, a soup spoon and a tea spoon. The Present Time Fruit Bowl Wired Metal Copper is an architectural take on an everyday storage item. Its fluted shape echoes the scalloped back of the Evelyn Chair, curving up to give you more room for treats, while looking like a work of art on your dining table or kitchen worktop. Add another art deco accent to your living space with the lush Viserra Low Stool, finely upholstered in Blossom Pink velvet. The low stool, which has an extra touch of class thanks to its circular gold band making this the perfect option for adding a touch of luxury to your living room. Combining the best of Scandinavian simplicity with the timeless look of luxury, the Baltimore Footstool is as stylish as it is versatile. Wrapped in pink velvet, the round stool can be used as a sofa foot rest or as extra seating around a small table. It’s four supportive brass legs ensure durability, giving you a place to rest your feet for years to come. www.cultfurniture.com

uild atmosphere and drama throughout your home with Urban Avenue’s stunning selection of pendant lights. Available in a mix of styles and materials, each with an ability to create texture and interest, add ambience and facilitate conversation. Industrial-style lights and architectural pendants are great for adding edginess and a sense of instant cool to a room. The statement Pylon Suspension Light Duo would look great in an airy warehouse style space and has a contemporary, architectural design with functional appeal in spades. The pair of pendants are suspended from a single ceiling rose, each featuring a pulley mechanism that allows for flexible positioning on the ceiling and easily adjustable height. Offered in black or white, the metal structure has a feel of industrial elegance. The Industrial Pendant Trio is a modern take on classic industrial lamps designed by Kaschkasch for Dreizehngrad. The clear anthracite crystal glass shade is supported by a solid oak cone, which also houses the LED bulb and technical components. The hand-blown glass naturally has slight variations - signs of the traditional glass blowing process that give unique character to each piece. In this Trio, three variations of the pendant lights hang from a single ceiling rose, creating a chic cluster. Add a playful touch to your children’s room with the pink Done by Deer pendant. With a classic, vintage-inspired form, the metal pendant light

offers a vibrant spin on industrial style. The elegant Funk pendant is minimalist in design, allowing the beauty of the natural woodgrain to shine. The fine veneer shade, in either maple or walnut, provides a warm translucency when lit, giving it an element of Norse forest mysticism. Each of these shades are handcrafted to the highest standards. Handmade in Italy by design studio ILIDE, the warming Africa pendant light is composed of two overlapping ceramic bodies. The white glazed inner element emerges from the angular opening of the grey, matt shell that surrounds it. The impeccably finished light emits a directional glow, providing a warm atmosphere and timeless elegance to its surroundings. The cool twisted glass Gala pendant light is hand-blown in Italy using traditional glass making techniques. Gala Rigata has an emerald green stem and a diagonal ribbed texture, lending it an elegant antique feel. VALUE ADDED 6 Home improvements that will add value to your property - according to a professional

Prefer to stay put and renovate than move? Lisa Salmon seeks some expert tips for the projects that promise the best returns.

I

ncreasing numbers of homeowners are avoiding the expense - plus the physical and emotional upheaval - of moving house, by staying put and renovating instead. In fact, the number of people choosing to do this has risen fivefold since 2013, according to a recent report by Hiscox Insurance - increasing from 3% of households to 15%, representing more than four million homes in the UK. Supporting the notion that we’re becoming a nation of home-improvers, figures from Halifax show that planning applications have risen by a quarter over the last five years. Meanwhile, Hiscox found the average budget for home renovations was around £16,100 for each project, although 18% of the householders surveyed expected to spend more than £25,000. So what improvements are they making? According to the research, homeowners are most likely to either renovate a bathroom or add a new one, followed by kitchen improvements, installing a new boiler or central heating system, or creating more living space. However, not every home-improvement project will automatically add value to a property. “Cheap is cheap - nothing kills the value of a

property more than doing cheap work in it. Estate agents have told me they’ve seen sellers with tears in their eyes, when they find out that construction work worth thousands of pounds hasn’t added a single penny to their home,” says Ash Chawla, chief executive of the design/build company Duke of Design (dukeofdesign.co.uk). “We live in a world which has become very aware and knowledgeable. There are no shortcuts to creating value to your home.” So, what does Duke of Design recommend? Here are six home improvements Chawla says could be a wise investment...

Conservatories The simplest home addition is a conservatory, which Virgin Money research says can raise the value of your home by as much as 15% if it’s included as part of an extension, or by 5% if it’s just a simple conservatory. Chawla says choosing the right materials can help conservatories blend well with modern and period properties. “The key is to use materials other than the commonly seen white UPVC,” he says. “A muted, more sophisticated palette of taupe and grey-painted wooden frames camouflages itself in a natural setting, and the reflective properties of glass help it blend into the outside space more easily.”

Extensions Estate agents surveyed by Hiscox believe the best way of spending money on your home is by

having way of spending money on your home is by having an extension built, saying the addition of a new bedroom could boost the average home’s value by 11.2%. They reckon a new kitchen, meanwhile, will typically increase a home’s value by 5.5% (or £12,400 based on an average UK house price of £226,071), although 28% think a new kitchen can lift a home’s value by as much as 10%. A single storey extension can be built in as little as three weeks once planning permission is granted, says Chawla, who suggests an average sized £30,000 single-storey rear kitchen extension on a £500,000 home can lead to a profit of £30,000-£35,000. “Aside from a rise in property value, you also benefit from a stunning home environment with added usable space,” Chawla adds.

Remodelling Remodelling an existing kitchen - by adding high quality units and flooring, purpose lighting and redecorating - could increase a property’s value by as much as 4%, according to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors - although Chawla warns that expensive purchases, such as kitchen units and flooring, should be kept in proportion to the value of the property. “The most successful kitchen extensions consider the whole home,” he explains. “By removing internal walls, you can connect the kitchen to the dining room, creating a functional space for entertaining.” Alternatively, you may also choose to link the kitchen to the garden by using large windows or patio doors.

Garden landscaping “Often overlooked, the garden can become the hub of home life and can work seamlessly with your home, as if brick and foliage were the most natural partners in the world,” says Chawla. For family-sized homes, ensure the outdoor space is suitable for the growing needs of a family with low-maintenance planting and landscaping, while a small courtyard garden at a city apartment may appeal to younger working couples. The cost of landscaping a garden can be as little as £2,000, but Chawla says spending a little more can lead to a potential return of £40,000 on a £500,000 house.

Parking Most towns and cities have a parking problem, 84 DECEMBER 2018

Chawla points out. “By providing viable parking facilities, you can increase your property price dramatically,” he promises. You could either convert land at the front or side of your property to add a driveway or parking space, or add a garage - possibly by converting an existing outside building, if there’s suitable access, or by building a garage extension. Full garage conversions commonly add up to 8-10% to your property value, says Chawla, particularly in areas where parking is a premium.

Loft and basement conversions The Hiscox report says loft extensions are the most popular planning request, and Chawla says loft conversions are usually less troublesome than basement conversions. They don’t always require planning permission, although they do need to meet building regulations to be classed as a room. The Nationwide Building Society says the average cost to convert an attic is around £20,000, which rises to approximately £35,000-£45,000 if you’re creating a dormer loft with double bedroom and bathroom. Just boarding out the loft for storage is unlikely to make much impact on the price of your property, and Chawla stresses: “If financial gain is your goal, converting the loft into a usable room is the way to go. The benefits of adding an additional bedroom to your property can be huge - loft conversions can add as much as £65,000-£75,000 to your property value.” An alternative is to add a basement conversion if space allows, but Chawla says this is a complicated procedure and potential problems, such as water ingress and foundation issues, can be major concerns.

“Remodelling an existing kitchen - by adding high quality units and flooring, purpose lighting and redecorating - could increase a property’s value by as much as 4%”

DULUX COLOUR OF THE YEAR FOR 2019

SPICED HONEY Whether spread across rooms or dipped into on borders and accents, Marianne Shillingford talks to Gabrielle Fagan about Dulux’s sweet new hue

A

sweet, new look is coming to our homes thanks to Dulux, who’ve revealed Spiced Honey as its Colour of the Year for 2019. An earthy, caramel hue, according to the experts at the paint brand, it’s versatile enough to introduce into a wide range of home interiors - because it can be “calming and nourishing” or “stimulating and energising”, depending on the palettes and light surrounding it. “Spiced Honey is a warm caramel with notes of amber, that perfectly reflects our new sense of optimism and resilience for 2019,” says Marianne Shillingford, Dulux’s UK creative director. “While 2018 was seen as unsettled and unpredictable and saw us retreating and hiding behind our sofas, next year is one where we’re ready to ‘let in the light’,” she adds. Here, Shillingford shares her guide to using the colour to create successful settings...

What is Spiced Honey? “Spiced Honey has a raw, natural quality that works like a warm neutral, which makes it so adaptable to pairing with different materials and styles of decoration,” she enthuses. “It looks especially good when teamed with whites and off-whites in furniture and furnishings, which gives it a contemporary feel.” 88 DECEMBER 2018

What can it do for rooms? “Its rich caramel tones visually turn up the thermostat a few degrees, and so it’s perfect for creating a relaxed, cosy atmosphere in places where we like to think, dream, love and act,” Shillingford notes. “Its the colour of warm woods, and while there’s something reassuringly familiar about it, which may pay a nod to Seventies retro, this is a new colour with a fresh, modern spin. Paired with off-whites and a dollop of deepest inky Cobalt Night, Spiced Honey offers a room a fresh contemporary bite, but introduce soft warm greys and muted pinks like Angora Blanket and Soft Stone, and you achieve a look that is as sweet and delicious as honey on hot buttered toast.” DECOR TIP: For a sophisticated living area, use the shade as a backdrop and add touches of soft pink, intense burgundy and sophisticated deep blue. Polished woods, mid-century furniture, graphic rugs and textiles will emphasis will enhance this look.

How can this shade be used in rooms? “It’s a colour that’s happy to play the supporting role rather than being a full immersion shade on all the walls, but it could be a wrap-around colour in a small room where you want an intimate atmosphere. Otherwise, feature it in bands and blocks, as well as on interior woodwork or for painted furniture,” Shillingford adds. “Be guided by when you most use a room, as well as the light levels it enjoys. If it’s mostly used during the day and there’s little light, its bronze tones will be more pronounced and it will be more dominating. If, however, your room is northfacing with large windows and ample light, you could decorate a larger area. Light has such a lovely effect on this shade - which is in fact predominantly yellow in its make-up, so in full sunshine it has an invigorating, uplifting feel. As the light fades and it’s seen in lamplight, it takes on a gorgeous cocooning, soothing, almost textile finish. “ DECOR TIP: For an energising atmosphere, partner Spiced Honey with richly pigmented shades, including deep forest green, bold teal and

intense terracotta red. With wooden furniture and botanical prints, the effect will be a cosy but lively space.

Where could you use it? “I’m loving the idea of using this colour on a ceiling, possibly in my bedroom. It’s such a liberating way of decorating because the ceiling is the most uninterrupted space in a room,” says Shillingford. “Focusing the colour overhead allows you to be much more more creative with walls, so you can hang more art and other decoration. Interior designers are starting to call the ceiling the fifth wall!” DECOR TIP: To create a serene space, pair the shade with romantic powder pinks and blues. Plain pale woods, simple hand-thrown vessels and pretty fabrics will add to the contemplative, centred feel.

What other ways are there to feature the shade? “Think of this Spiced Honey as flavour for a room. There’s no need to overdose on it, just as you wouldn’t if it was a spice in cooking. It works equally well in small doses. Using it that way is the ideal starting point if you want to experiment and see if it’s to your taste,” suggests Shillingford. “Paint a shelf, create a painted border around a door frame, or feature it as a low band of colour at dado height on a wall to ground a space. Alternatively, pick up on it with accessories.” DECOR TIP: Be playful with Spiced Honey and enliven it with pops of vivid red and green among pale pinks, blues and crisp greys and whites. Partner with reclaimed, personalised furniture and bold graphic shapes for an on-trend eclectic look.

TILES, LAMINATE OR LUXURY VINYL:

WHICH KITCHEN FLOORING OPTION’S BEST FOR YOUR HOME? WORDS: Abi Jackson, Press Association

F

rom durability and cost to easy maintenance - industry insiders talk to Abi Jackson about the things to consider when researching your choice. In need of a new kitchen floor, but unsure what material to opt for? There are lots of options, but a few important things to consider too. “Fitting out a kitchen is very exciting, but often you forget to think about the flooring, which is likely to be one of the largest surfaces in the room, so its selection deserves careful attention,” says Jordan Reuben, from Canadian reality series, The Property Brothers. First and foremost, there’s your budget to consider, but keep in mind that it’s not necessarily just a question of how much the floor will initially cost to buy and fit - some types of flooring will require more specialist cleaning, for example, or may be prone to damage and wear and tear, meaning further costs down the line to replace or repair. Your choice will need to be a practical fit with your lifestyle too and, of course, you need to like it! As Sian O’Neill, head of marketing at Topps Tiles (toppstiles.co.uk), notes: “As the hub of the home, kitchen design is of the utmost importance to homeowners, so it’s important to select flooring that is not only beautiful and hard-wearing but will stand the test of time.”

Here’s a look at three key options... Tiles “Tiles are an excellent choice, as they are durable, design-led and able to stand up to the demanding conditions of kitchen spaces, with high traffic, potential spills and food mess,” says O’Neill. “Natural stone tiles provide a cosy and timeless look, especially for those living in an old country-style house. It’s worth keeping in mind that due to their porous surfaces, these types of tiles will need additional care before and after laying, to ensure they are sealed enough to last in humid areas, and to keep their finish in top condition. As long as you’re happy to maintain and look after them correctly, then the final result is luxurious and 96 DECEMBER 2018

for that authentic wood look without the drawbacks. Easy to install and maintain, homeowners can enjoy an affordable, stylish floor that will stand the test of time. More and more are now water resistant, adding to their appeal, and are suitable with underfloor heating.” Reuben notes that long laminate boards “can make any room feel bigger, whether it be dark or light flooring”, plus, “laminate is supplied in planks that are generally easy to fit, even for the novice!”

Luxury vinyl homely.” Reuben adds: “Stone flooring is available in a wide range of colours, sizes and textures, but you must ensure the stone is sealed to keep it in top condition. Remember, limestone is porous, so it will naturally suffer wear and tear. If you’re looking for a hard-wearing and totally hassle-free option, porcelain tiles are great. It can be made to replicate the look of wood or concrete. The tiles are often highly durable and fit well in a high-traffic environment.” If you’re lusting over a gorgeous slate or marble floor - but your budget doesn’t stretch to the real thing, there are lots of lookalike tiles out there. “If natural stone isn’t the right fit for your home, there are plenty of additional options that offer the same aesthetic, but without the associated maintenance. Consider stone-effect tiles as these are waterproof, which means they’re easier to maintain and, thanks to modern technology, can now be made to look identical to the real thing,” says O’Neill. Wood-effect tiles can also offer a far cheaper alternative to real wood flooring (easier to lay and clean, too).

Laminate Want the look of real wooden boards, but that’s not a realistic option budget-wise? There’s good reason why laminate flooring is a trend that’s stuck around. “Laminate wood floor is as popular as ever,” says Reuben. “It’s very modern and looks fantastic. As long as the product is factory sealed, those wine stains will just wipe away.” Josh Ashby, of UK Flooring Direct (ukflooringdirect.co.uk), adds: “Good quality laminates make a great floor for the kitchen, allowing

“Modern vinyl is becoming increasingly popular as a cost-effective option to tiles and laminate. It comes in all different patterns, and good-quality vinyl can be very hard-wearing,” says Reuben. Sophie Hautekeete, of Quick-Step (quick-step. co.uk), agrees: “Luxury vinyl is undoubtedly the floor of the moment, offering that perfect blend of good looks, durability and ease of maintenance. Our vinyl planks have an embossed surface, which means the texture on the top surface matches the design, to create fantastic interpretations of the real floor it imitates.” A big part of the appeal is the scope of designs available. “Cushion, or sheet vinyl, has enjoyed a significant rise in popularity over the past five years, as modern methods of construction mean that wood and tile-effect designs look and feel like the real thing, with knots and grouts adding texture and interest,” says Stuart Reeves, Avenue Floors (avenuefloors.co.uk). “Design choice is almost unlimited, which means this type is often the go-to kitchen floor for those looking for performance, style and value.”
