Faces by Cally Trench A unique exhibition of portraits by artist, Cally Trench, opens at Bucks County Museum on 15 July. Cally Trench’s Faces are an ever-growing collection of life-size ink drawings of the faces of her friends and family. The drawings are based on photographs taken of each person, lying on their back and looking directly at the camera. The resulting disembodied heads stare coolly at the viewer as if from their bed of sickness or death; gravity pulls back their flesh, and they look as if they were flying off the paper into the wind. From a distance, these faces seem to observe the viewer and wait for an approach. Close to, the individual ink marks, dots, lines, squiggles and cross hatching become obvious. Cally perceives her task of translating photographs into ink drawings as similar to the challenges met by engravers in the 18th and 19th century in translating oil paintings into engravings. his summer families visiting the River & Rowing Museum in Henley on Thames will be in for a real treat, as Peter Rabbit and his friends take over the Museum! Bunnies will be bouncing all over the museum, as Peter Rabbit hops, skips and jumps right off the page in an interactive exhibition about Beatrix Potter’s most famous creation. Generations of children have grown up with Peter Rabbit, from reading the original tales to watching the current TV animation. This exhibition looks at Peter across the ages, and includes original artworks, first editions and early Peter Rabbit merchandise. The exhibition spreads throughout the building, and in the family gallery on the first floor of the Museum, visitors will be able to help Mrs. TiggyWinkle hang up the laundry or visit Mrs. Rabbit in her burrow! Children can dress up as Peter, curl up with a book in the story corner or enjoy planting carrots in Mr. McGregor’s garden. Families can explore the outside space with a special trail and venture into Mr McGregor’s Garden for sand and water play!

he line-up of the annual Chorleywood Literary Festival is always rather spectacular and 2017 is no different. But we’re particularly excited that starting things off this year are three especially big names. Children and adults alike won’t want to miss spending an afternoon with master storyteller Michael Morpurgo. The former Children’s Laureate will be delighting us with extracts from his charming and uplifting new book Toto: The Dog-Gone Amazing Story of the Wizard of Oz. Beautifully illustrated by the award-winning Emma Chichester Clark, Toto is an unforgettable telling of a classic story and is an absolute must for every bookshelf. Michael Morpurgo will be at St Clement Danes School, Chorleywood on Sunday 10th September at 3pm. If mouth-watering food is more your thing, acclaimed chefs Yotam Ottolenghi and Helen Goh will be celebrating the release of their new cookbook, Sweet, which embraces indulgence, abundance and extravagance. Be inspired by recipes for cakes, cookies, tarts, pies, puddings and confectionery, drawn from a wide variety of culinary traditions. The book contains something for everyone: there are simple sweets parents can make with the kids alongside recipes that will inspire the most accomplished of bakers. Sweet! The Chorleywood Literary Festival prides itself on offering something for everyone, and this tradition continues with the inclusion this year of comedian James Acaster and novelist John Connolly. Stand-up James has been nominated for the Edinburgh Comedy Award five times and has appeared on primetime shows like Mock the Week, Live at the Apollo and Russell Howard’s Stand Up Central. In his first book, he recounts tales of a man perpetually getting into trouble, whether it’s disappointing a skydiving instructor mid-flight, annoying the Kettering Board Games Club or hiding from thugs in a bush wearing a bright red dress. James Acaster will be at Chorleywood Memorial Hall, Chorleywood on Wednesday 30th August at 7.30pm. Author John Connolly recreates the golden age of Hollywood in his new novel, He, about comedy legend Stan Laurel, for an evening presented by Chorleywood Bookshop and Chorleywood Film Club. A
s the summer mood turns to August it time to make the most of this month’s seasonal ingredients. Highlights incudes English watercress, apricots, beetroot, globe artichokes, radishes and kohlrabi. Runner beans, courgettes and swiss chard are still flowing from the raised beds. Shellfish is still at its best
so why not try your hand at a refreshing chilled consommé. This is a stock that has been clarified to leave a full flavoured base to add your favourite summer ingredients. It should be made in advance and served in large flat bowls to showcase your lobster, sweetly scented with marjoram and garnished with pretty edible flowers and fresh garden peas.
RECIPE: Chilled Lobster Consommé with Marjoram and Fresh Garden Peas
Summer Lunch Tasting Menu Offer
Serves 4
Ingredients Consommé • 1 stick of celery finely chopped • 1 shallot finely chopped • 1 small carrot finely chopped • 2 sprigs of marjoram • 150g lean chicken minced • 3 egg whites • 3 litres lobster stock • 200ml sweet Madeira • Sea salt and cracked white
pepper • 50g of fresh garden peas lightly blanched • Marjoram leaves, nasturtium and borage flowers to garnish Lobster Stock • 4 medium cooked lobster • 1 large chopped onion • 1 chopped carrot
• 2 celery sticks • 4 parsley stalks • 1 sprig thyme • 1 bay leaf • 2 chopped tomatoes • 1tbsp tom puree • 4 pepper corns • 300 ml wine • 2 litres fish stock • 1 litre veal or chicken stock
Method Lobster stock 1. Prep the lobster and set aside claw, and body meat 2. Chop head claw and body shell sweat with vegetables 3. Add wine and reduce by three quarters and then add the stocks 4. Bring to the simmer for 40 mins and then pass through a chinoise For the consommé 1. Mix the celery, shallot, carrot, marjoram and minced chicken and egg whites together 2. Whisk until the egg whites have started to froth. Gently mix this into the cold stock and Madeira in a thick based saucepan. 3. Bring to the boil stirring gently with a spatula and scraping the bottom of the pan 4. As soon as the liquid starts to bubble turn down the heat so it barely simmers and stop stirring 5. A crust of egg white will form on the surface 6. Make a hole in the centre of this to allow the stock clarify properly 7. Simmer very gently for 20 mins then remove from the heat and check the seasoning. 8. Using a ladle gently pass the liquid through a muslin lined strainer that has the cracked peppercorns in it. Chill for at least 2 hours or overnight 9. Serve in soup plates with pieces of cooked lobster, the blanched garden peas, marjoram leaves, nasturtium and borage flowers 24 AUGUST 2017

Whose fault is it?
When couples reach the end of their marriage and they feel they have no other option left but to divorce, the usual questions arise: 1. When can I get divorced? 2. Who will start the divorce process? In England and Wales, couples can only get divorced if they have been married for at least 1 year. To start the divorce process one party needs to prepare a divorce petition and issue this at court. Either spouse can start to petition against the other irrespective of who has caused the breakdown of the marriage. Therefore, for example, if one has formed a new relationship with a third party, they can still petition against the other despite the fact they may have caused the final breakdown of the marriage. If the marriage has broken down irretrievably, the law provides the following grounds for divorce: • Unreasonable behaviour; • Adultery; • 2 year separation; • 5 year separation; and • Desertion. 3. It was not my fault, so why am I being blamed in the petition? The most commonly used reason for a divorce is the other party’s ‘unreasonable behaviour’. In the absence of adultery, a petition based upon 44 AUGUST 2017
unreasonable behaviour is the only way to avoid a minimum 2 year separation period until a divorce can be pursued. There is a requirement to prove fault. But such a petition does enable the parties to pursue an immediate divorce. The Petitioner (who applies for the petition) has to put the blame on their spouse, the Respondent. There is no way to avoid this. When the Respondent receives the petition, they will read the short statement in which the Petitioner is blaming them. It is no surprise then this is usually unwelcome and an already fragile separation can turn into an acrimonious one. 4. Why would anyone need to blame the other? Isn’t it enough to just say, we no longer get on? The answer is ‘no’, it is not enough. This is unfortunate. A number of family law solicitors, as members of an organisation called Resolution, support a change to the law to achieve a no-fault based divorce system. Resolution members believe in a constructive, non-confrontational approach to family law matters. However, whist this campaign for improvement continues, divorcing parties just have to get over this initial hurdle of requiring blame should they wish to petition against each other, avoid a minimum 2 year separation period and start an immediate divorce. Epic challenge
for Bucks breast cancer survivor A breast cancer survivor is cycling almost 1,000 miles to raise money for patients with life-limiting conditions.
M
other-of-two Jenny Phillips, 53, from Downley, only took up cycling three years ago. But, on September 9, she will embark on an epic 969-mile bike ride from Land’s End to John O’Groats in aid of The South Bucks Community Hospice. “I am doing this in recognition of all the many people who are life limited and that’s why I want to support the hospice,” said nutritionist Jenny, who is a member of Marlow Riders. “Although the training is extreme, I feel that this challenge is within my grasp. I was diagnosed with cancer in my 30s and I am fitter and healthier now than I was all those years ago.” She added: “Health is something that I no longer take for granted, so not a day goes by that I don’t feel glad to be alive and on this planet. I am so delighted that I am able to undertake such a massive event as this. “But so many people are facing difficult health conditions that really limit their ability to participate in a full life. I am supporting the hospice because it can really help in providing services to these people.” Jenny hopes to raise at least £2,000 for the hospice. She will be part of 800 riders who will spend nine days on the journey. The event, called the Deloitte Ride Across Britain, is run annually and Jenny used her own funds to buy a place. She will be accompanied by her friend Andy May, from Weston Turville, who is raising funds for Cancer Research, and the contingent of cyclists will stop at camp sites

along the way. The prospect of the ride both excites and scares her. “The first day in Cornwall involves 8,500 feet of climbing which is huge and I’m really terrified about that,” she said. “On one of the days alone, we will be riding 127 miles.” Jenny has been free of cancer for 14 years. She said: “I had breast cancer and took six months to beat it. At the time, our children were very small - five and six years old. I went through all the treatment but felt I needed to do more to increase my chances of success. I read extensively and made big shifts in my diet and lifestyle, and consequently I have much better health now than when I was younger which is really cool. It’s quite a privilege to be fit and well enough to do this ride.” Jenny, who has a background in science and a chemistry degree, began looking at what cancer was and started to build up a picture of how she could help herself. As a result of her experience, she made a career switch in 2005 and retrained as a nutritionist. She is convinced her diet helped her successful recovery, and she went on to write a book called “Eat to Outsmart Cancer”. “Clearly what we put in our bodies matters a lot,” she said. “I really cut down on processed foods like pasta and bread, and ate more vegetables and natural food. I then found a lot of niggly health
problems, such as asthma that I’d had since childhood – and which I hadn’t considered were related - just went away.” Jenny chose to back The South Bucks Community Hospice after meeting its Chief Executive Officer Jo Woolf, and visiting the new hospice building Butterfly House, a stunning new palliative day centre in Totteridge, High Wycombe. “I was really impressed with the work Jo Woolf was doing to bring an improved quality of life to people who need it. I was very impressed by her plans. Walk the MS Mile is Back! W
alk the MS Mile is the Chilterns MS Centre’s largest annual awareness and fundraising event. Since its inception in September 2015, it has raised £91,500 for the independent, Wendover-based charity and doubled the number of referrals received from people affected by multiple sclerosis (MS). John Allen will be taking part in Walk the MS Mile in Beaconsfield on Saturday 16th September. John says “I was diagnosed with MS in 1995, I had little information about MS at the time but I discovered the Chilterns MS Centre and it changed everything. I received help and advice from the most amazing team of physios and just talking to other people going through the same experience is a great help”. Ally Rumble is taking part in her local mile in Berkhamsted “The Centre has become my lifeblood, as well as having treatment I am a member of the art group and I volunteer on the Reception. I now have an enormous group of friends at the Centre and they lift my spirits”. The hundreds of people that have walked a mile for the charity have helped it deliver over 2,600 hours of treatment to individuals like John and Ally who rely on the Centre. Although it costs the charity £1m to meet the needs of people with MS 48 AUGUST 2017
in the local community, it receives less than 10% of its funding from the NHS. MS is an unpredictable, often disabling disease that causes a wide range of symptoms including difficulties with mobility, balance, impaired vision and bladder problems. Living with MS can be tough; although we don’t know the cause and we know no cure, we can treat many symptoms with physio, hydro, oxygen, complementary and occupational therapies. The Centre helps its members gain greater control over their MS, empowering them to lead happy and healthy lives and supporting their carers. This type of regular and long term support is not available on the NHS. Many people with MS are unable to take part in physical sponsored challenges. Internationally renowned artist Bernar Venet exhibits sculptures at the National Trust’s Cliveden this summer
T
he National Trust is delighted to announce a new contemporary art exhibition at Cliveden in Buckinghamshire featuring large-scale steel sculptures of 9 metres high, by the internationally acclaimed conceptual artist Bernar Venet. The series of ten sculptures, by the artist considered the world’s greatest living French sculptor, is being exhibited in the historic grade 1 listed gardens until mid-October. This significant installation marks the first outdoor exhibition of Venet’s work in the UK since 1976, and the unveiling of a brand new piece for 2017; Seven Leaning Straight Lines. Venet has an insatiable curiosity and desire to push both his own limits and the frontiers of art. Mathematical investigations of chance and chaos provide the starting point for his distinctive outdoor steel sculptures that explore variations on the simple line. The project is part of the National Trust’s ‘Trust New Art Programme’, an initiative established in 2009 to bring contemporary art to the places in the Trust’s care. The National Trust is working in partnership with international gallery Blain|Southern to bring these impressive works of art to Cliveden. Venet’s large scale sculptures are afforded the space they need to be appreciated in Cliveden’s designed landscape. There’s a dynamic tension between the angular geometry of the formal

gardens and the soaring arcs and bars of the solid steel structures. Cliveden’s Head Gardener, Andrew Mudge, is interested in how the sculptures will reconnect Cliveden’s visitors with some key viewpoints in the landscape and the existing sculpture collection. Oonagh Kennedy, Cliveden Curator said: “Cliveden’s owners have all been great patrons of the arts. All have embraced the new in the pursuit of edifying the setting of Cliveden. From the Duke of Buckingham’s theatrical setting for his mansion house and the Duchess of Sutherland’s pioneering carpet bedding, to William Waldorf Astor’s extravagant Waldo Story sculpture, Cliveden’s owners have viewed themselves at the forefront of contemporary taste. They operated at an international level and we are continuing this work.” Running alongside the new contemporary art exhibition is ‘The Shock of the New’, 19th century style. This is a short, self-led tour exploring some of Cliveden’s most controversial sculptures. Lord Astor was an avid collector of relics and brought many interesting sculptures to Cliveden, such as The Shell Fountain, also known as The Fountain of Love. He put this impressive piece at the end of the Grand Avenue, prime position to greet visitors as they arrived. The works of Bernar Venet are available to view until mid-October 2017. The exhibition is included within Cliveden’s normal admission price. The ‘Summer of Bernar Venet’ includes a retrospective exhibition of Bernar’s work at Blain|Southern’s gallery in London in June along with the unveiling of a brand new sculpture in Regent’s Park. he Rotary Clubs of Marlow today announce that the 13th Santa’s Fun Run will take place on Sunday December 3rd starting at 9.30 am. They again promise a sea of red running through the streets of Marlow. As always this 5 kilometre run appeals to a wide range of participants – some serious but mostly not - and in doing so raises serious money for good causes. Participating Santas can raise money for their own personal charities – or they can raise it for Rotary. In 2016 around £35,000 was distributed to mainly local charities and other deserving causes, with a target of £40,000 this year. There will be two lead charities for the 2017 event – Scannappeal and Compassionate Friends. Scannappeal is of course a very well-known local charity, and most of us at the very least know of someone who will have benefited from this great cause. Compassionate Friends (also called Alliance of Hope) provides support for those who have lost someone through suicide, and more details of this much respected charity can be found on www. allianceofhope.org. Additionally, a host of other mainly local - charities benefit every year from this great event. The Rotary Clubs of Marlow are also delighted to confirm that Sytner BMW High Wycombe are the lead sponsors for the third year running The entry website will open for entries on September 1st, and potential participants should sign up quickly and then start raising sponsorship funds as early as possible. Those interested will need to book early to avoid disappointment (last year Rotary had to close to entries well before the event date). I
n August 2015, Sam Wright was recruiting for her maternity cover as Head of Finance at a national sales agency. Fast forward two years and Sam is in the home of 84 year old Joan helping her get ready for bed. Joan is not an elderly relative of Sam but one of the first clients of her new Home Care business, Right at Home. So why the career change? A few months after giving birth to her son Felix, unexpectedly on Christmas day 2015, Sam read an article about dementia that lead to a moment of realization “if Felix were to develop dementia in later life I will not be around to care for him, so who will?” This got Sam thinking about the job she’d had as a teenager working weekends and school holidays at a residential care home. Eat right for good sight A
balanced diet is not only good for general health, but can also be helpful in maintaining good eyesight. Green, leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale and broccoli, nuts, oily fish and eggs can contain vitamins A, C and E and/or lutein and zeaxanthin. These act as ‘antioxidants’ and help to protect the eye, particularly the retina from ageing conditions such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
Advice AMD is a painless eye condition which can cause you to gradually lose central vision, which is what you see when focusing straight ahead of you. As vision becomes blurred, reading can become difficult and colours may start to dull. AMD affects over 600,000 people in the UK and is the biggest cause of loss of eyesight, which is why it is important to take care of your eyes, and not to ignore any signs of visual discomfort and visit your GP or optometrist. It is advisable for everyone to eat a rich and varied diet, particularly containing the foods rich in antioxidants, mentioned above. In people who have already developed AMD, they may benefit from taking additional supplements which potentially can reduce the risk of progression of AMD by 25%. It is advisable to be examined by an Ophthalmologist beforehand to determine whether you are likely to benefit from supplements. Some patients with AMD will develop the ‘wet’ form, which causes sudden reduced vision and distortion. Fortunately, there are now very effective AntiVEGF therapies which are able to preserve and restore vision, which would otherwise be lost - with the key being early diagnosis and treatment. In patients with advanced AMD requiring the use of a handheld magnifier, there are surgical options including the insertion of a lens implant to help with reading vision. Cataract surgery can also be an option for patients with AMD which can potentially improve vision and brighten colours they see. It is important to be assessed by a suitably qualified Ophthalmologist to determine whether you would be a good candidate for any of these procedures. By eating a healthy and balanced diet, including plenty of fruit, vegetables and water, as well as moderating your alcohol consumption, you can reduce your risk of developing AMD.

The truth about the current temporary relaxation of the planning laws in relation to Conservatories and Extensions
W
hilst homeowners can in theory have larger extensions at present, the temporary rules are not a blank cheque and there are still plenty of legalities that need to be adhered to, so before adding an extension make sure you have understood what you can and cannot do before having something built that may end up being a mistake. According to the PlanningPortal.gov.uk website an extension or addition to your house in England is considered to be permitted development, not requiring an application for planning permission, subject to the following limits and conditions (for a full list of all the rules, visit the planning portal itself): 1) No more than half the area of land around the “original house� would be covered by additions 86 AUGUST 2017
or other buildings. 2) No extension forward of the principal elevation or side elevation fronting a highway. No extension to be higher than the highest part of the roof. 3) Single-storey rear extension must not extend beyond the rear wall of the original house by more than three metres if an attached house or by four metres if a detached house. 4) In addition, outside Article 2(3) designated land and Sites of Special Scientific Interest the limit is increased to 6m if an attached house and 8m if a detached house until 30 May 2019. 5) These temporary increased limits (between 3m and 6m for terraced and semi-detached houses and between 4m and 8m for detached houses respectively) are subject to the prior notification of the proposal to the Local Planning Authority
and the implementation of a neighbour consultation scheme. If objections are received, the proposal might not be allowed. 6) Maximum height of a single-storey rear extension of four metres. 7) Maximum eaves height of an extension within two metres of the boundary of three metres. 8) Maximum eaves and ridge height of extension no higher than existing house. 9) Side extensions to be single storey with maximum height of four metres and width no more than half that of the original house. 10) Materials to be similar in appearance to the existing house. 11) No verandas, balconies or raised platforms. The above government guidance reflects temporary increases to the size limits for singlestorey rear extensions (which commenced in May 2013) that must be fully completed by 30 May 2019, under the temporary relaxation permitted under the associated Neighbourhood Consultation Scheme. Before any homeowner gets too excited, the extra temporary increased extension size limits for conservatories etc. are still subject to planning law, and in practice only going to be permitted if not a single neighbour objects, and your local council agree that your written submission and the professionally drawn plans of your proposals that they require comply with both planning law and the Building Regulations. A downside of the Neighbours Consultation Scheme is that you have to wait 8 weeks for a determination. Plus, if any neighbour objects, your local council is probably only going to allow development if it falls within the limits of Permitted Development (i.e. a maximum of 3m projection from the back of the original rear wall for attached houses and 4m for detached houses). They will then advise you that should you want to have a larger development considered, you will need to submit a full planning application. Consequently, the smart way to go in the first place is to apply for full planning permission should you want to have an extension greater than these sizes, as this immediately saves you 8 weeks, and if done in consultation with your local councils

and planning professionals, you’ll stand a far better chance of gaining an approval. The new temporary increases don’t apply to “designated land”, Conservation Areas, Listed Buildings or Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. If your property is part of a relatively new development, your local council may have withdrawn your PD Rights, which would mean you’d need to submit a planning application, even if it was say only wanting to add a 3m x 3m conservatory onto the original rear elevation. So before you embark on any extension it is always worth checking your property has sufficient PD Rights still intact to carry out the project you are looking to have done. “It’s easy to take color for granted. Painting walls a deep blue will give you a sense of summer all year round, and you can add warmth with natural objects and colors,” he enthuses. “Denim blue, greyish blue, duck-egg blue, shades of blue that veer towards green, and anything in between are all favourites of mine. There’s nothing more comfortable to wear than denim, and it’s just as comfortable to live in a moody blue interior. Shades of denim can range from the deepest indigo to the palest, soft grey-blue.” DIP INTO BLUES: Anything goes with deep moody blues - light or dark, muted tones or bright clear, spring-like shades. In an interior, dark blue works as a neutral and looks brilliant either covering walls or used as a grounding accent in the form of textiles and decorative objects. every other hue sits so well against them, especially the bright green of spring leaves,” he says. “While you may be reluctant to repaint a room pitch black, I’m sure you would be pleasantly surprised if you did, as it’s such a chic, comfortable colour to live with. I wish I had more dark colours in my home. A dark backdrop can have such an impact and create a sense of drama, yet at the same time give a very calm and cocooning feeling. It also makes any other colour stand out beautifully, whether it’s a single flower, a branch of spring blossoms, or a piece of furniture.” DIP INTO GREYS AND BLACKS: If painting a whole room seems too much, start with one wall or ceiling. Create a tonal wall by painting one solid colour of matt paint in a dark colour and then, using a sponge, apply a wash of diluted lighter paint over it. Repeat until you get the desired effect. WASHED, BLEACHED & WEATHERED Natural colour schemes have a depth and softness to them, says Blomquist, and feel so unmanufactured and true in their shades that they’ll always bring a sense of integrity to your home and make it feel warm, inviting and relaxed. “I’m always collecting pieces of wood from the beach and the forest. I use some to light the fire, but the sculptural pieces usually end up on display and inspire me in my choice of colours,” he explains. There’s nothing like the faded colours of smooth driftwood, washed vintage French linen, or antique grey painted furniture. I love everything about these soft, warm tones. I like to mix vintage and new, textural wood playing off shiny porcelain, and if you feel the whole is too bland, introduce some greenery - a single leaf or a pot plant can be the last extra touch needed.” DIP INTO PALE SHADES: If you have plain white walls, add layers of texture and introduce different shades of soft white to make a room more inviting. Layer textiles in different weaves or colours, hang a panel of vintage fabric as a work of art. STORMY DAYS Towards the end of summer vivid hues begin to fade and moodier colours appear along with dark stormy days and autumnal earthy colours; this is a palette Blomquist recommends for atmospheric rooms. “Even though I don’t like rainy days, I love it when dark, thundery rain clouds roll in because their deep tones are astoundingly beautiful, and 94 AUGUST 2017

Enhancing the Home with an Indoor Pool Paul Green and his wife had always wanted an indoor pool, a dream that was made possible when they moved to a new home and had the space to extend.

Paul contacted Origin and arranged a meeting. “It was really good to see the owner of the business taking a personal interest. He said all the right things and the advice he gave was great. They organised an onsite visit for us so that we could get a feel for the work they had previously done. This really solidified our decision to choose them”. Paul also had a local contact who lived in the area and had experience with Origin. He gave the company a glowing recommendation.

the house. It was essential it didn’t stand out but internally, they wanted a high quality, modern and contemporary style. Paul adds: “We drew a lot of inspiration from pictures of other high end pools and I used these to demonstrate to Origin and the architect what we wanted.” The couple wanted a bright and spacious area. Colour changing lighting and iridescent tiling which reflects the light perfectly, both provide the feel of luxury. In addition to creating a relaxing space with a spa pool, it was also important to Paul that he could use the pool to maintain his fitness. The space to build an Olympic sized pool wasn’t available, so Paul decided to install swim jets that create resistance as he swims, providing a more challenging exercise regime.
Brilliant Builders During the project, the couple were kept up to date with progress. The Origin team were available to chat through the project whenever they wanted, including regular meetings to discuss finishes and make other important decisions as they went along. Paul was extremely impressed with the construction team. Despite undertaking a huge build project, they kept disruption to a minimum and didn’t knock through into the Green’s property until it was essential. This helped to keep the property secure throughout. “The team were great, they kept the site as clean as they could and they were all extremely friendly. Once you get over the mental hurdle that your property is going to be a bit chaotic for a few months, this is a really exciting part of the project as you begin to see your pool take shape”.
Paul and his family couldn’t be happier with the space they have created: “I’ve always used swimming as a form of exercise. I used to visit a local hotel three times a week before we had our pool installed and this proved difficult if I was working late. Now, I use the pool five times a week and when the rest of the family visit, they have a fantastic space for leisure and relaxation. Especially our granddaughter, she’s three years old and just loves splashing around when she visits.” Paul looks at it as more than a pool though; it’s an extension of his home: “The good thing about the space is that it’s a room in its own right. Although my wife and I may have slightly different agendas when it comes to the pool – I primarily use it for fitness and she will use it for leisure. It’s also a very pleasant space to, relax and do things such as have a drink or read a book. Our friends are amazed by the complexity of the design!” So, would the Green’s recommend Origin? “Absolutely, they were honest, realistic and clearly experienced – they had the whole package.” Origin has over 35 years’ experience building award-winning swimming pools.
