Berkshire Born Hollywood actress, Victoria Summer finds her Missing Ingredient

rom having colleagues such as Tom Hanks and Mark Wahlberg to finding her true love in lockdown, Berkshire’s own Victoria Summer, star of ‘Saving Mr Banks’, ‘Game of Aces’ and ‘Transformers’, announces her engagement to Italian born, Michelin star chef and hubby-tobe, Fabrizio Vaccaro! This lockdown love story plays out just like the movies. Picture this; a quiet coffee shop nestled in the East Grinstead countryside, the air ripe with the scent of freshly ground coffee beans. Our leading lady, Victoria, sits locked in conversation

with a close friend, as our devilishly handsome heartthrob Fabrizio enters the scene. A hush seems to fall over the café as their eyes meet, and their love for each other begins. Sounds like a fairytale doesn’t it? Well, this encounter with destiny would be no more than fiction had it not been for Covid-19! Fabrizio would have been landing in his current home of Rome if it weren’t for the cancellation of his flight, which instead set the master-chef ’s course toward the UK for an impromptu visit to see friends, and an even more “impromptu” (actually totally accidental) meeting with his soul mate, Victoria! Los Angeles resident Victoria had been spending time away from the city of angels since last Christmas to care for her father, extending her stay only to refurbish his home. Perhaps Victoria had been preparing for a role as an interior decorator at some point in her impressive career, as she completed the work with little to no help, making plans to celebrate her grand refurbishment finale at a coffee shop with a close friend… sound familiar?

After the coffee shop sparks flew, the two love birds went on a peppering of dates together, including a visit to Victoria’s home of Ascot. Then with lockdown in full swing, Victoria and Fabrizio decided to make the best of a bad situation, renting a flat in East Grinstead and spending their lockdown falling deeper and deeper in love with one another. If you could choose to get locked down with anyone, a Michelin star chef would probably be near the top of the list! Fabrizio wasted no time in serving Victoria her first of many meals most of us could only dream of indulging in, a thought made somewhat harder to swallow knowing that Bentley, Victoria’s rescue Pomeranian, also gets to chow down on restaurant quality dinners served straight to his bowl after Fabrizio swore that tinned dog food would be a thing of the past for the pampered pooch! Once lockdown eased, Fabrizio whisked Victoria away to his hometown of Paola to meet his family and to officially ask her to marry him. The two had already spoken about their desire to spend their lives together during their stay in East

14 SEPTEMBER 2020

Grinstead, however, Fabrizio wanted Victoria to meet his family (who instantly adored and welcomed her) before he officially placed a ring on her finger, which he did on the 2nd of July when Victoria answered ‘yes!’ to his proposal outside of the Santuario di San Francesco, a location very dear to Fabrizio’s heart, as he frequented this monastery with his late mother who passed away when he was just 18. Now our perfectly paired couple are cooking up plans for their big day, with a castle in Italy as the set for their 2021 blockbuster wedding! Although preparations are in full swing, the show must go on! Victoria is heading to Madrid to dig into filming period drama Glow & Darkness with her new Bond girl co-stars Denise Richards and Jane Seymour, leaving her new fiancé in Rome in the safe paws of Bentley. Since starting her career in West End theatre, Victoria’s undeniable talent and faultless work ethic has lead her down an incredible, star studded path, and now, that path has brought her to her true love. Princess Beatrice marries in vintage:

How to choose the perfect pre-loved wedding dress

P

The royal wore an upcycled gown lent to her by the Queen.

rincess Beatrice has married Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi in a surprise ceremony, but what’s more unexpected was her choice of wedding dress. Instead of enlisting a top designer to make a gown from scratch like so many royal brides before her, Beatrice opted for a customised vintage dress. For her big day, she dipped into the Queen’s archives and found a Peau De Soie ivory taffeta dress by Norman Hartnell, trimmed with duchess satin and encrusted with diamantes. The Queen wore the gown to the premier of Lawrence Of Arabia at the Odeon Leicester Square in December 1962, and again to the State Opening of Parliament in 1966. Beatrice had the Queen’s senior dresser Angela Kelly and designer Stewart Parvin remodel the dress to make it appropriate for her wedding day, adding delicate capped sleeves. She topped off the outfit with another loan from the Queen – the Queen Mary diamond fringe tiara, which Elizabeth II also wore on her wedding day in 1947. Over the last decade we’ve seen royals get married in pieces by top designers from Alexander McQueen to Givenchy, so Beatrice’s vintage choice is quite unique. The outfit was well received on social media, with one Twitter user writing: “Adorable couple and could not have picked a more perfect wedding dress for her than that elegant/whimsical, yet very vintage, sentimental ensemble she wore.” Beatrice has also been praised for choosing a more sustainable option for her big day. Not only is re or upcycling an existing dress eco-friendly, but people often turn to pre-loved wedding dresses as they can offer something a little different to more modern designs. “Princess Beatrice’s choice of wedding dress marks a point in the royal family’s iconic fashion choices, taking steps towards mindful consumption even on such an important day,” says Victoria Prew from rental platform HURR

Collective (hurrcollective.com). So if you’re looking to wear a vintage outfit on your wedding day, these top tips may help you find the perfect outfit…

Be open-minded and set aside plenty of time You might have your heart set on a particular designer from a certain era, but Prew warns against this. “Try not to be too focused on the designer; there are incredible options out there without the labels,” she says. Head of pre-loved at eBay (ebay.co.uk) Emma Grant recommends you commit a fair amount of time to the hunt, saying: “The nature of vintage clothing is that you’ll need to have a good scroll

feature

before that one-of-a-kind gown catches your eye.”

Be targeted in your search “Try and find the best vintage sellers online, starting with Etsy or 1stdibs,” advises Prew. To make life a bit easier for yourself, Grant says: “If you’re looking for a particular cut, style or era, be specific in your search. Naming brands or eras that are associated with the style you’re looking to emulate will help you narrow down the search to the most relevant items.”

Plan in advance Vintage wedding dresses tend to be one-of-a-kind, so it’s unlikely you’ll find a dress that fits you like a glove. This doesn’t mean you can’t wear it on your big day, but you’ll have to be a bit smart with planning. “Make sure there’s enough time to have your perfect piece altered,” says Prew. “Get the dress, then get it altered to perfection.” Grant also says you should be flexible with sizing: “As it’s pre-loved, it might have also been altered at the time of buying to fit the owner, so you may have to size up or down to get the fit that works for you. Always get in touch with the seller to check the specific measurements.” As well as tailoring the outfit to fit, Grant recommends shortening hemlines or streamlining waists to give your vintage look a modern touch.

Search for accessories You might not have the Queen’s tiara handy for your wedding, that doesn’t mean you can’t take inspiration from Beatrice and hunt for vintage accessories to go with your dress. “Vintage is also great for crowns and earrings,” says Prew. “Going vintage means you can guarantee your choice will be ‘timeless’ rather than ‘trendy’ – it’s your day, so make a statement.”

Consider its condition “While a few buttons or sequins missing shouldn’t put you off investing in a great quality, pre-owned wedding dress, more significant signs of wear and tear require further thought,” Grant says. “Don’t risk your money on items that are fraying, holed and stained as, chances are, trying to repair a gown and get a good colour match will be trickier to get away with. If the dress hasn’t been professionally cleaned by the seller, consider getting this done yourself.” 18 SEPTEMBER 2020

“Make sure there’s enough time to have your perfect piece altered,” says Prew. “Get the dress, then get it altered to perfection””

The History of Guildford Cathedral

G

uildford Cathedral is a modern Cathedral with a truly remarkable story. Building work on the Cathedral started in 1936, to a design by Sir Edward Maufe. But work was stopped by the Second World War and its devastating aftermath. Despite enormous setbacks, regular services were held in the Crypt Chapel (the current Choir practice room) from 1947. When building restrictions were lifted and materials were available again, there was a renewed sense of determination in the local community to complete the Cathedral. But there were very limited funds. Eventually, through the Buy a Brick fundraising campaign, work re-started again in 1954. More than 200,000 ordinary people became brick-givers. Their generosity helped ensure the completion of what they thought of as “their Cathedral”. It was an extraordinary act of public support, a demonstration of modern community spirit. With a resilient and make do and mend approach, the inside of the Cathedral was

furnished. Again, much of this was done with the assistance of local people. For example hand making the 1500 kneelers, which remain in place today. The Cathedral - The People’s Cathedral - was consecrated on 17th May 1961 by Bishop George Reindorp in the presence of HM The Queen, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, the Archbishop of Canterbury and a packed congregation from all parts of the diocese. T

he National Trust has come a long way since it was founded by Octavia Hill, Sir Robert Hunter and Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley in 1895. The founders believed that nature, beauty and history are for everyone and so set up the Trust to look after the nation’s coastline, historic sites, countryside and green spaces. Octavia Hill, a radical social reformer and cultural philanthropist, saw the preservation of open spaces as crucial to improving the lives of the urban poor. Their aim was not only to save important sites, but to look after them for everyone to enjoy in the years to come. From this trio of environmental pioneers, the National Trust was created. Initially, one hundred people paid 10 shillings each to get the ball rolling forming the National Trust into an independent Charity. And their original values are still at the heart of everything the charity does 125 years later. The National Trust welcomed more than 27.9million visitors over 2018/19. Vast coastlines, land, historic houses , castles, ancient monuments, 250 gardens and parks and nature reserves – with 9 lighthouses, 56 villages, a gold mine and 39 pubs including the George Inn in Southwark, featured in Dickens’ Little Dorrit. The National Trust’s first house was Alfriston Clergy House in East Sussex, a dilapidated medieval meeting house, acquired in 1896. The National Trust’s historic houses and stunning landscapes have also provided backdrops to some unforgettable moments on the small and silver screen from Harry Potter to Poldark and from Tarzan to Wolf Hall, via Game of Thrones.

It also happens to be my 25th year as President of this great British institution which, with your valuable support, continues to play a vital role in our national life. When our three founders established their new organisation it would surely have seemed impossible to them, or indeed anyone else, that a membership of millions of people would one day own and support 250,000 hectares of farmland, 780 miles of coastline and more than 500 historic properties, together with glorious gardens and spectacular Nature reserves. “We owe a huge debt of gratitude to those pioneers and to everyone whose support over the years. generations and as a direct impact it has of course, necessitated the temporary closure of the National Trust’s properties, parks and gardens too. While this was undoubtedly a great shame, I know the anniversary will not be overlooked and I shall do whatever I can to play my part in celebrating this important milestone – however remotely. I can only say how enormously privileged I am to have watched this remarkable institution grow over the last 25 years and hope you will look forward, as much as I do, to seeing the next chapter unfold” The National Trust reopened more than 130 gardens and parklands last month.. To ensure the safety of their visitors, staff, volunteers and local communities, they have reduced the number of people they can welcome at one time and you’ll need to book your visit in advance. Last year over 65,000 volunteers devoted in excess of 4.8 million hours of their time to support The National Trust and thanks to the generosity of their supporters they received almost £97.8 million in fundraised income during 2018/19.

WORK HARD, DO GOOD AND ENGAGE

beyond school. Respect, responsibility, resilience and reflection are learnt through the programme, and students also learn how to communicate with each other as part of a team and in leading a team. These activities also help them to become accurate decision-makers - another important asset for later life. Benefits from the more physical activities help improve students’ health, wellbeing and fitness levels in order to maintain a balanced lifestyle.

Education is about much more than achieving the right grades. Nick Creed, Deputy Head of Co-curricular at Hurst College explains why as much value is placed on what goes on outside of the classroom as inside.

Why does Hurst use the term co-curricular rather than extra-curricular? We regard co-curricular activities as being key to the all-round education of every individual student, and use the term co-curricular because we believe that activities should run alongside the academic curriculum as part of the weekly timetable. Skills that are learnt through cocurricular activities can be transferred to the classroom. Sport and games are compulsory throughout the week and the service afternoon is compulsory for students in years 10/11, whilst the majority of Sixth Formers continue to be part of the service programme. Dance and drama are compulsory for Year 9s and have protected slots as part of the weekly timetable; music activities such as choir and orchestra also have protected slots. Specialist sports during games sessions include archery, climbing, rowing, sailing and mountain-biking. Through these activities students will not only develop a range of qualities and gain certain skills but they might also be introduced to a pastime or hobby which they can enjoy throughout their lives. Why are co-curricular opportunities so important in a child’s education? The range of activities provide many opportunities for students to try new ventures, confront risks and learn from experience – all crucial aspects in developing skills for life. The aim of the programme is to equip students with the skills and experience to make a success of their lives

44 SEPTEMBER 2020

Which co-curricular events are most popular? We encourage students to engage in as much of the programme as possible – as members of dance companies or sports teams, performing in drama or music productions or taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh award. There are highly qualified staff to deliver the activities and to bring out the best in each student. Some discover talents they didn’t realise they had first team rugby players have also taken lead roles in the Dance Showcase. By the time students leave us, the majority will have performed in a sports team, on the stage, as well as having marched with the CCF and been involved with an environmental activity. Do you actively encourage girls to take part in activities traditionally favoured by boys and vice versa? The programme is not focused on gender and therefore activities are not gender-specific. Boys are equally involved in dance as girls; and in sport, some teams consist of boys and girls – particularly cricket and hockey. How did you deal with co-curricular activities during remote learning? One of the most interesting challenges was to redesign the school day to adapt to the new way of learning. Some creative timetabling allowed for an earlier finish each day without losing any of the co-curricular provision. This last point proved critical: by continuing to offer a programme of assemblies, sports sessions, choir and orchestra practices, drama rehearsals, activities sessions and CCF, the regular rhythms of school life continued – and the students stayed fit, healthy and active. hppc.co.uk

PREPARE YOUR CHILD (AND YOU!) FOR STARTING SCHOOL Making the transition to primary school is a huge milestone in children’s lives - here’s how to make it a smooth one. By Lisa Salmon. written down, it’ll help them take responsibility for their own belongings - otherwise you risk a lot of lost possessions over the next school year. She suggests playing games, ordering the letters in their name, making labels for their book bag, creating a bedroom sign for their door, or moulding it with play dough.

S

tarting primary school for the first time involves more planning than just buying a new uniform (if their school has one) and pencil case. Getting a four or fiveyear-old ready for the huge transition from home, childminder or nursery to ‘Big School’ needs plenty of preparation and support. This is something early years specialist Claire Russell and nursery teacher Suzanne Roberts know all about. As Russell, founder of playHOORAY! (playhooray.co.uk), which provides play ideas and prompts for young children, says: “When it comes to preparing your child for school it’s not all academic, it’s about supporting and preparing them from a social, emotional and general wellbeing perspective too. “Parents shouldn’t panic or put any pressure on themselves or their young children,” she adds. “Don’t forget children will pick up on your own anxieties about them starting school, so it can be really beneficial to prepare together for the new chapter in both of your lives.” Russell and Roberts have compiled these 14 tips to help parents and children navigate the transition and sail through starting primary school... Recognising their name It’s not necessarily about children being able to write their own name, says Russell, but about them recognising their name, as it will be on their belongings. If they can recognise their name

Counting Counting doesn’t mean reading, writing and ordering numbers one to 10, as that involves a lot of skill for a preschooler. Instead, practise counting through songs and stories, and try playing with numbers and noticing them when out and about - on doors, buses and price tags, etc. Practise wearing the uniform Suzanne Roberts, teacher and manager at Burgess Hill Girls Nursery in Sussex, says children should practise wearing their uniform and PE kit, and just generally dressing themselves. “Lots of parents forget this and then expect their child to be comfortable on their first day,” she says. “Uniforms can be very different to what your child is used to wearing. Children of this age can be sensitive to change.”

No laces Roberts suggests parents should avoid buying new school shoes with laces. “Your child has to become more independent, so help them as much as possible by either buying shoes with Velcro straps or slip-on trainers or plimsolls.” Toileting independently Ensure that when going to the toilet, your child is able to undo his or her trousers, wipe their bottom and wash their hands. Tidy tots Help them become more independent by encouraging your child to hang up their own coat and bag on arrival at nursery or at home. Ask them to do some little chores at home, too. Prepare them by teaching them to put their shoes together at home, or putting some of their own belongings away. “By helping them to be more independent, you’re helping them to feel confident and selfassured,” explains Roberts. Eating independently “Don’t expect miracles, but do encourage your child to use their cutlery correctly, eat independently, and try clearing their plate away when finished,” suggests Russell. Read school information If you haven’t already done so, it may be too late to visit the school, but make sure you read any information the school has sent. Practise the school run Practise taking the journey to school, so it’s not so alien. Use it as an opportunity to talk about any anxieties your child may have. Play taking turns games A lot of children in one space means they’re going to have to learn to share and take turns. Russell advises that parents help children practise by playing lots of games together as a family or with friends, to help them learn to wait for their go. Read bedtime stories Most schools will send home books or even homework, so it’s a good idea, if you don’t already, to build books and reading into the bedtime routine now. Try books like Topsy And Tim Start 48 SEPTEMBER 2020

School by Jean Adamson, Starting School by Allan and Janet Ahlberg, or Harry And The Dinosaurs Go To School by Ian Whybrow. No comforters Leave special toys - comforters, blankets, or teddies - at home. Don’t linger Explain to your child that they’re going to have the best time ever - implanting this idea is very powerful, stresses Roberts - and that you’ll see them later. If you forget to tell the staff something, don’t go back into the room; pop to the reception desk and they’ll pass on a message.

Hide your emotions Starting ‘Big School’ can be a very emotional time for parents, but don’t show your child you’re upset on their first day. “If they see you upset, they’ll think they should be upset too, and this is very unsettling,” explains Roberts.

Ensuring a solid education during troubled times S t John’s Beaumont Preparatory Day & Boarding School for 3-13 year old boys, like every school across the country, finds itself in unprecedented times. The school is doing everything possible to provide pupils and their families with the academic and personal support necessary to thrive in the coming months. From September 2020, the school is running a full live academic and creative arts curriculum and modified activities programme for all boys who are able to attend school. In addition, St John’s is supporting boys and their families who are required to self-isolate in the coming months by continuing to deliver an online programme, ‘SJB Reach’, which during lock-down, proved highly successful. Whilst COVID-19 presents undeniable challenges to the well-established wider cocurricular (Activities) programme, it also offers valuable opportunities for innovation. St John’s will continue to demonstrate to pupils, through its actions, how to thrive in this new environment and make the very most of the time, skills and facilities available. Daily morning assemblies and collective worship remain central to the well-being programme of the school and these will continue both in small groups and online for the whole school. Music concerts will continue to run online and the ‘Magis’ enrichment programme will remain central to the wider curriculum. St John’s Beaumont School welcomes boys

of all backgrounds whose parents recognise in the Jesuit Roman Catholic values and approach to education something they desire and wish to support for their own children. The school aims to encourage well-rounded young men who can develop the confidence and open-mindedness to make the most of every opportunity and challenge that life will offer to them: these abilities and attributes are more important than ever as we find ourselves in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is important that boys demonstrate the same commitment to a challenge as they do to areas that naturally interest them. The Jesuit education St John’s boys’ experience is both a first-class academic education and a consistent formation of character. This is why boys leave St John’s with impressive achievements and scholarships academically, in sport and the creative and performing arts, to some of the country’s most coveted senior schools including Eton, Harrow, Charterhouse, Winchester and Wellington.

Welcome back

Dr Peter Forrester and Ms Helen McEvoy are pleased to announce the reopening of their Esher clinic following the relaxation of the Covid-19 lockdown. Dr Peter Forrester and Ms Helen McEvoy continue to offer the option of combining Profhilo with INTRAcel, our proven and long-established radio-frequency micro-needling treatment. Together they are an unbeatable combination.

T

hey are pleased to welcome back their patients and assure them that new strict guidelines will be followed to ensure patient safety and protection.

INTRAcel Dr Peter Forrester has been using INTRAcel skin rejuvenation for over 5 years. During this time he has witnessed the introduction of many other non-surgical skin-tightening treatments. Usually well publicised, celebrity endorsed and very expensive. They are promoted with before and after photographs showing results that are rarely achievable in practice. Dr Forrester continues to be impressed with the results of INTRAcel and believes that it offers a better and more cost effective

result than most of the new ‘trendy’ techniques. INTRAcel cleverly combines the two established techniques of micro-needling and radio-frequency (RF) skin tightening. INTRAcel delivers short bursts of RF energy into the deeper layers of the skin. Recovery from an INTRAcel treatment is usually quick; at the end of the treatment the skin will be red like a sunburn sensation for a few hours, this will diminish after 1-2 days. A toned and tightened effect will be immediately noticeable after a treatment but the full effect will develop over the subsequent weeks. There will be improvement after the first treatment, however a course of 3 at 4-6 week intervals is recommended. Following this improvements will continue for up to 6 months as healthy collagen develops.

INTRAcel can: • Improve and tone the texture of the skin • Reduce wrinkles and fine lines • Tighten the jowls and neck • Improve acne scars • Improve acne

Profhilo Profhilo is an exciting and unique rejuvenation product for the face, neck and décolletage, being unlike any other skin treatment on the market. Dr Peter Forrester always looks critically at new treatments and never jumps on the bandwagon of new treatments until he has had time to evaluate the exaggerated claims made by some manufacturers and occasionally other practitioners. He has regularly used Profhilo since Summer 2017 and hence has

It will not add excessive volume and hence there is no risk that a Profhilo treatment will result in an obviously filled or ‘pillow face’ look. It is manufactured by IBSA, a longestablished and highly reputable Swiss company and was first launched in Italy in 2015 and subsequently in the UK in January 2016. Since launch there have been an increasing number of positive reviews and opinions in the media. A Profhilo treatment is quick and easy. Just 5 small injections of Profhilo are administered to each side of the face. Discomfort is minimal and other than the possibility for a small bruise there is no downtime. There will be an initial increase in hydration, but the main effects will build over the following weeks. A second treatment must be given 4 weeks later to maximise the beneficial effects.

5 reasons why your lockdown love-handles may be lingering And what you can do about it

L

osing weight can be a simple exercise for a lucky few, but for many people, weight loss is far more complex. Weight loss is influenced by multiple factors and understanding some of these can help you win what sometimes feels like a losing battle. Dr Kim Prescott discusses a few reasons you may be struggling to get rid of those last few pounds.

You’re eating too much Just because something is healthy, doesn’t mean you can eat it excessively. Avocados, nuts, fruit and olive oil are essential components of a healthy lifestyle, but when eaten out of balance with the rest of your diet, they will contribute to weight gain. 58 SEPTEMBER 2020

It’s good to include healthy oils and fats in your diet but watch the calories if you’re not on a strict keto programme.

You’re not eating enough On the other hand, eating too little can also make it harder to shift those extra pounds. Your body is finely tuned to protect itself, and when it feels deprived of nutrients, it goes into starvation mode. Your metabolism slows and your body will hoard anything you eat as fat. If this goes on for a while, the body will make every effort to slow down your weight loss in order to conserve energy. Your body functions most efficiently with all the required nutrients and minerals on board, so make sure you follow a balanced nutrition programme, even when you’re cutting calories. Low calorie programmes can be highly effective for weight

loss, but should be carefully managed in order to avoid metabolic slow-down and weight re-gain.

certain programmes are better than others - but need to be appropriate for you as an individual.

You’re not getting enough sleep

Your hormones have gone awry

It seems to make sense to wake up early for a workout, but only do this if you are getting to bed early the night before. A lack of sleep not only minimises the benefits of exercise, but endurance is reduced as is your capacity for recovery after a hard workout. Over time, you will start to exhibit the signs of stress with prolonged increases in cortisol, a powerful appetite stimulant, and inflammatory changes in the brain that result in memory loss and decreased mental acuity. When you have a period of poor sleep, you get increased ghrelin, the hormone that tells the brain you need to eat, and decreased leptin, the hormone that signals you when you are feeling full. This results in a voracious appetite that is made worse by cravings and a slowing of your metabolism. Place a particular emphasis on ways to manage your stress and make sure you make an effort to get enough sleep!

Growing older, belly fat, nutritional deficiencies, genetics and ill-health can all lead to a decline in the effectiveness of your hormones, contributing to an inability to lose weight. When you do succeed in losing weight, however, your body is quick to respond to changes that it perceives as harmful through a series of “metabolic adaptations”. Your thyroid hormones decline causing your resting metabolic rate to slow down. Testosterone decreases, and your stress hormones – particularly cortisol – are increased leading your body to store fat. Just to add to this, you end up with a constant feeling of hunger due to a number of mechanisms mentioned earlier. This cascade of events is exactly what you don’t want for successful long term weight loss, and needs to be avoided by including researched dietary principles like intermittent fasting and calorie cycling to help prevent weight loss plateaus and rapid weight re-gain.

You have insulin resistance One of the most common reasons for difficulty losing weight is insulin resistance. Your cells essentially become less responsive to insulin, the hormone that enables the body to convert the food you eat into the fuel you need for energy. Excess glucose builds up in the blood and your body quickly stores this as fat. Some of the implications of insulin resistance are: • you feel sluggish and low in energy so you find it difficult to exercise • your body receives the message that you need more food so you feel hungry all the time – even after eating a meal • Your brain doesn’t function as efficiently with high blood sugar so you experience “brain fog” You are at higher risk for diabetes and other chronic health conditions if your waist circumference is greater than 37 inches (94 cm) for men, or 31.5 inches (80 cm) for women. If this is you, speak to your doctor about the best ways to prevent diabetes and future ill-health Eating plans for insulin resistance should be customised as

“When you have a period of poor sleep, you get increased ghrelin, the hormone that tells the brain you need to eat”

How can a Medical Weight Loss programme help you? Studies have shown that the majority of people who do successfully shed pounds will regain around 60% of that weight within 12 months. A specialist can help design a programme that is tailored to your individual needs, and that incorporates lifestyle changes and scientific principles to help you to lose the weight and to keep it off. There are a number of drugs that are licensed for weight loss in the UK, and in some cases, your doctor may consider it appropriate to prescribe one of these alongside your diet and lifestyle programme in order to improve your outcome and overall health. Drugs for weight loss should never be used without medical oversight.

A brief history of the cardigan, from The Queen to Taylor Swift

T

The humble cardi is becoming cool again. By Katie Wright

o mark the release of her new album Folklore and first single Cardigan, Taylor Swift took the unusual step of selling an actual cardigan alongside more traditional merchandise, like hoodies and T-shirts. A replica of the one Swift wears in her Cardigan video – a thick cable knit V-neck sweater in cream with black stripe edging, that has three stars on each sleeve – has already sold out on the singer’s online store. Famous fans including actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Kobe Bryant’s daughter Natalia have

64 SEPTEMBER 2020

posted photos on Instagram wearing the cardigans, they’d been gifted by the singer. It’s surprising to see such a wintry garment gaining popularity in summer, but the cardigan has a way of popping back into fashion just when it seems to have gone for good. From its earliest origins to the present day, here some of the faces who have helped make the cardigan famous…

7th Earl of Cardigan The knitted sweater takes its name from the 7th Earl of Cardigan, James Thomas Brudenell,

a lieutenant general in the British army. Lord Cardigan, famous for leading the Charge of the Light Brigade during the Crimean War, was known for wearing a short, woollen sleeveless waistcoat to keep warm during the failed offensive in the 1800s. It is thought to have been trimmed in fur. After the war, the practical knitwear item reportedly became rather popular outside the military, and cardigans began to be widely produced.

dresses for formal occasions, when it comes to off-duty style, Her Majesty is all about cardigans. Usually teaming a blouse and pleated skirt with a loose, open cardigan in a muted hue, the Queen has been pictured in button-down sweaters for decades, most recently when the monarch met her newest great grandchild, Archie.

Kurt Cobain

Coco Chanel Credited with popularising cardigans for women in the 1920s, it’s said that French fashion designer Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel preferred a button-down sweater because she didn’t like the way traditional pullovers messed up her hair when she put them on. Inspired by the legendary designer’s early work, cardigans and knitted jackets are still seen on the Chanel catwalk and in boutiques today.

“The Queen has been pictured in buttondown sweaters for decades”

At the other end of the style spectrum, rock icon Kurt Cobain introduced a whole new generation to the cardigan in the Nineties. The Nirvana frontman took an item of clothing usually seen on grannies and grandpas and made it cool, wearing moth-eaten chunky knits with band T-shirts and battered jeans. One of the singer’s most famous cardigans, worn for the band’s 1993 MTV Unplugged gig, sold at auction for $334,000 (£260,000).

Michelle Obama

Preppy, fine-knit cardigans from brands like J. Crew were a mainstay in Michelle Obama’s wardrobe as First Lady, reportedly leading to a spike in sales as fans sought to emulate her elegant style. On the night Barack Obama was elected as President in 2008, the First Lady wore a black cardigan over her red and black Narciso Rodriguez dress.

Taylor Swift Now, with the release of Folklore, Taylor Swift has put the cardigan back on the map once more. Given the pop star’s huge reach (she has 137.5 million followers on Instagram) we predict we’ll be seeing more cosy cardis in the shops once autumn rolls round.

BRING THE CINEMA HOME I n discussion with Nic Black, Managing Director from the Pyramid Group, we wanted to focus on the use of home entertainment systems and the increased use of these during these uncertain times. As award-winning audio-visual integrators specialising in smart homes and private cinemas, we have seen a marked increase from customers wishing to improve or create home entertainment systems whilst they are spending so much time at home. Now more than ever, the demand being placed on our home networks is exacerbated, with home working using video calls, increased streaming of content as children are filling their social time and all the while relying on poor network infrastructure that is invariably not fit for purpose. Looking into the future, as social distancing and access to public environments will be limited, the opportunity to take the family out for visits to the cinema or to a sports event will not be the same. As cinemas and film studios across the world are feeling one of the largest impacts of this pandemic, the opportunities to view the latest content being released on a pay per view basis is only going to increase. Adapting to this

unprecedented situation, many studios have now scrapped scheduled cinema releases, in favour of home-entertainment releases. The recent release of Trolls on Sky Q was a huge success. With content now being delivered to our homes via so many platforms, service providers are competing hard for this space. Home entertainment systems such as family media rooms or dedicated cinemas are hugely appealing, and the quality that can be experienced will outstrip any commercial cinema visit. The recent European launch of Disney+ showed a huge appetite for their content, and alongside Netflix, Amazon Prime and even curated independent content from the likes of MUBI, mean that the choices available to stream content into your home in 4K UHD quality are enormous. If you couple this online feast with your own movie libraries using high specification products such as Kaleidescape, you will have the best of all worlds. So, why not consider upgrading your home entertainment systems in order to maximise the quality and enjoyment this opportunity brings? Systems can be designed to ensure the highest quality of video and audio using immersive formats, such as Dolby Atmos, are accessible and can be designed to blend into your interiors or designed to create your very own unique dedicated cinema room, guaranteed to bring smiles to all! If you would like to discuss the opportunity to bring the cinema home, then please do get in touch with our Sales Manager, Phillip Roe on 07919 411176.

How does a recession sit alongside a property boom?

E

veryone will now be aware of the great exodus from London into the homecounties and beyond. This is creating a mini housing boom that none of us could have predicted just a few months ago. It’s a pleasant side effect of what has otherwise been a terrible year. We will also be very conscious of the recession headlines and impending very difficult times ahead, not just the UK but globally. So how does a recession sit alongside a housing boom? The short answer is it is unlikely to. But whilst we are all uncertain how long this frenzied market will last for sales, the outlook appears clearer for lettings. Currently many of those selling in London and moving out are opting to rent instead of buy immediately. This gives them an opportunity to try out an area before they fully commit to it. It also means they can cut down on tricky chain situations and put themselves in a stronger position for a forward purchase. Should the sales market slow down this won’t dampen the bigger picture to leave the capital and therefore renting becomes the natural option. Right now the home counties are experiencing a great shortage in family homes to rent. We are

80 SEPTEMBER 2020

letting houses on the first viewing and without marketing. This is unusual for August which is a traditionally slower point in the season. The need for good quality rental stock, correctly priced is immediate and we remain confident that it will last through this year and into next year, regardless of what the economy or mother nature throws at us. More companies will start to allow people to work from home (or ‘live at work’ which may be more apt!) and this will continue the conversations within families about whether they need to live in the metropolis anymore. Renting makes this decision quicker and easier to facilitate in the short term. If the sales market does slow down then people will often look at renting their home if they can’t sell it so this should help fuel the demand. Predicting the market has been incredibly tricky this year and therefore now is the time, more than ever when you need real and honest advice backed up with expertise and knowledge. A good agent will always be happy to take the time and chat to you about the market and now is when that experience is essential. martinandwheatley.com
