The Future of Luxury Living in the Heart of Surrey
MacConnal-Mason Gallery has been established for
over one hundred and twenty years spanning four generations. Based in London, although with roots in the north of England, MacConnal-Mason have two galleries in Duke Street, St. James’s, the heart of London’s Art and Antique district and moments from the Ritz, St. James’s Palace and the renowned Clubs, Boodles, Whites, The Athenaeum and the Carlton Club. MacConnal-Mason present the finest paintings and sculptures of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries over six floors of exhibition space. From Pre-Raphaelite and High Victorian paintings, through Impressionist paintings, represented by Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Eugène Boudin to Modern British works by Laurence Stephen Lowry, Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth, and Marine paintings by Montague Dawson, the gallery’s exhibit a continually changing collection of works.
MacConnal-Mason have been instrumental in forming some of the most important collections of Fine Art in the United Kingdom and abroad. Being at the forefront of the Art Market for many decades, the gallery has dealt with many of the most important Nineteenth Century European paintings to appear on the market, including the record breaking “The Finding of Moses” by Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, that subsequently sold for a sum approaching thirty-six million dollars.
The ethos of the gallery has always been, and remains the case today, to source the finest paintings and sculptures, be they by artists of the Nineteenth or Twentieth Century and to make them available to the gallery’s clients and museums. The most important and principal reason for acquiring a painting or sculpture should be that it resonates with the viewer, causes an emotional reaction and one that will last. Ideally the acquisition will prove to be a form of wealth management, but it is the desire to own and enjoy a painting that is paramount, again, ideally one will be living with this for a long period of time. As previously mentioned, MacConnal-Mason have six floors of exhibition space in St. James’s but in addition, have always been delighted to show paintings at the home of clients and potential clients. In the present circumstances, this has also included gardens, garages and greenhouses! The process serves a useful purpose, it can be difficult to visualise a painting ‘in situ’ when seen hanging on a gallery wall several miles or several hundred miles away from home. To hang the painting ‘in situ’, at no obligation of course, is a means of facilitating the whole decision making process.
Lighting is a further matter on which the gallery is more than happy to advise, all paintings need light, whether it be natural light, spotlights or frame mounted picture lights, circumstances and position dictate the solution and the gallery has vast experience in such matters. As one of the foremost galleries in the United Kingdom, MacConnal-Mason exhibit widely, at prestigious art fairs in London, and abroad at the world renowned The European Fine Art Fair in Maastricht, perhaps the largest and finest Art and Antiques Fair worldwide. In New York, along with London, the centre of the Art Market, and home to a myriad of collectors, the gallery exhibits at the Seventh Regiment Armory, a spectacular and iconic building on Park Avenue. The gallery frequently produce catalogues of recent acquisitions to accompany the fairs.
MacConnal-Mason also organise exhibitions inhouse, one of the most significant such exhibitions being what was described as the finest exhibition of works by L. S. Lowry in the past twenty years, this in the same year as the major Lowry retrospective at Tate Britain in 2013, for which the gallery organised the loan of one of the principal works, which was also included in the Macconnal Mason exhibition.
The gallery has a wealth of experience under the Chairman, David L. Mason, O.B.E., along with Directors, David M. Mason, Marcus Halliwell, Sue Palmer and Gallery Manager, Richard Pikesley. They can muster approaching two hundred years of art market experience, connoisseurship, and present day market intelligence, and above all have a true passion for their subject.

Sir Alfred Munnings KCVO, PPRA
20 ½ x 27 ¼ in
Lord Astor’s High Stakes with Sir Gordon Richards up at Newmarket Sir Alfred Munnings (1878-1959) was perhaps the foremost painter of equine subjects since the eighteenth century painter, George Stubbs. The present work, High Stakes, is the most important in a series of paintings of The Start on which Munnings embarked in the early 1940’s, and continued until his death. Here the beautiful setting is Newmarket, and unlike the majority of the series, the horse, jockey and owner are all named. High Stakes was by Lord Derby’s 1933 Derby winner, Hyperion, out of the 1929 Oaks winner Pennycomequick. Sir Gordon Richards was one of the finest ever jockeys, and along with A.P. McCoy, the only jockey to be knighted; he was flat racing champion twenty six times. Lord Astor was a renowned owner and a great patron of Munnings. Edward Seago (1910-1974) was a keen sailor, and a friend of the Duke of Edinburgh, himself no mean sailor, he accompanied him on trips to Hong Kong and Antarctica on board The Royal Yacht, Britannia. Seago’s first boat Endeavour, served as a floating studio, his second, Capricorn is the green hulled vessel in the above work. Seago sailed frequently to the Continent, often painting the Port at which he moored. Seago was an extremely popular painter in his lifetime; lengthy queues would form at the gallery opening of an exhibition such that tickets would be issued to prospective buyers, who would be limited to one painting each. Laurence Stephen Lowry RA, RBA, LG, NS Three Figures
L.S. Lowry (1887-1976) was undoubtedly one of the great observers of humanity. The present family group is well dressed suggesting relative affluence and their slight stoop indicates they are in something of a hurry. By layering paint Lowry almost carves the outline of his figures, embedding them in their surroundings, thus imbuing comparatively simple works such as this with complexity and impact. As he concluded, “You don't need brains to be a painter, just feelings”. Museums: London, Tate Britain; New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art; Manchester, Nottingham

Walter Richard Sickert ARA Barnet Fair
Barnet Fair first took place in 1588, and was for centuries a horse, cattle and livestock Fair. By the time Walter Richard Sickert (1860-1942) portrayed the Fair, here circa 1928-30, it had increasingly become a Fair of traditional fairground entertainment, with horse trading taking a minor role, and referred to in the painting by the horses grazing beneath the trees. This an uplifting painting, a tented children’s theatre awaiting the arrival of the crowds streaming through the distant gates, by an artist regarded as one of the founders of the Modern British Movement. Henry Moret
Le Guilly, Port de Pêche
Born in Cherbourg and a disciple of Gaugin and the Pont Aven School, Henry Moret (1856-1913) spent much of his career painting the coast, fields and forest of Brittany, but it was above all the coast and fishing communities that were the focus of his work. Gradually, Moret’s style evolved to become, as in this composition, more impressionistic with the silvery light and flecks of colour and smaller more delicate brushstrokes. Royal associations Windsor Great Park has witnessed countless events throughout history, dating back to preSaxon times, each of which has left its own distinctive mark on this impressive landscape. Although it wasn’t until the 13th Century that the areas making up Windsor Great Park were properly defined, creating an incredible variety of landscapes across the 4,800 acres that have grown and been developed over time. There is a fascinating Royal heritage at Windsor Great Park that’s just waiting to be discovered. When you wander through the Great Park you’ll encounter Royal residences, formal gardens and trees that have stood for over 1,000 years - with each twisting pathway promising a journey through England’s history. From William I using the landscape as a hunting ground a thousand years ago, to the original planting of the Long Walk by Charles II, to Queen Victoria entertaining on the shores of Virginia Water - and even today our Royal connections continue to be as strong as ever under the stewardship of HRH the Duke of Edinburgh, the Ranger of Windsor Great Park. The exotic displays and National Collections will impress even the most seasoned gardener, and also provide an abundance of subject material for photographers of all levels. You can’t help but be amazed by the stunning Autumn Colour for which Windsor Great Park is famous – especially the maples and cherries in The Savill Garden and The Valley Gardens. At this time of year the fungi displays are also outstanding, but please remember not to pick them! And do keep watch when in the Deer Park, as it’s rutting season, which can be very exciting when our stags lock antlers.

Revealing Rowhurst V
isitors to Leatherhead’s Fire & Iron Gallery often ask about the enigmatic house tucked behind shrubbery just metres away. ‘Rowhurst’ is a Grade II* Listed Building, and with its noisy neighbour the M25, it recently featured in BBC4’s ‘The Hidden Wilds of the Motorway’. Scenes in the 1960s film ‘Twinky’ were filmed here, and a photograph shows Susan George and Trevor Howard dancing by the fireplace. An episode of ‘Last of the Summer Wine’ features the adjacent forge, and numerous documentaries have been made at the property. Owner of Fire & Iron Lucy Quinnell is an expert in modern ironwork, but she is just as enthusiastic about her ancient home. After researching its history for decades fleshing out the bones of what was thought to be a Jacobean hunting lodge - Lucy commissioned dendrochronology, which dated the timbers of half of the building to an earlier 1346, and half to 1632. This left the anomalous semi-basement, built from flint and older than the structures above it. Rowhurst’s unusual terraced garden fascinated Lucy, too, with views right across Leatherhead to the Mole Gap. Having assembled archives of medieval documents, maps and incredible photographs from the 1890s onwards, Lucy realised she could go no further without archaeological investigation to explore her ideas. Her desk-based research revealed links between this immediate landscape and King Alfred, Piers Gaveston and Dick Whittington. Once there was an Anglo-Saxon minster church, a pre-conquest manor house, a major rabbit warren, a prison, a courthouse, a dovecote and a gatehouse. Was Rowhurst’s semibasement one of these, or none of these – or all of these? 3 0 O C TO B E R 2 0 2 0
Surrey Archaeological Society came to help in 2019, and found Late Bronze Age, Early Iron Age, Roman, Late Saxon and medieval pottery under the lawn. A possible post-hole was identified, with a sherd of chunky Roman amphora from Baetica in Spain at its base. The digs were run as community outreach events, with local families and schoolchildren learning about Surrey’s past. The archaeologists plan to excavate more ground at Rowhurst over the next few years. Anyone coming to see the modern metalwork will glimpse the outside of Rowhurst. Open days enable closer inspection and participation. Everywhere, contemporary metal art sits comfortably with the old buildings, and there was one major surprise for Lucy last year. The archaeologists found foundry slag and iron ore across the whole site, and not from the Quinnell family’s 88 years of blacksmithing here. This is not the first time the site has hosted ironworking… Fire & Iron Gallery, Rowhurst Forge, Oxshott Road, Leatherhead, Surrey KT22 0EN Open Tuesday to Saturday 10-5 fireandiron.co.uk Fire & Iron Gallery

Heathland Artworks returns to Farnham Heath this Autumn
H
eathland Artworks is a FREE outdoor art exhibition and a wonderful opportunity to explore Farnham Heath this autumn. From 1-30 October come and discover delightful artworks all created by local emerging artists studying Craft, Fine Art and Textiles at the University for the Creative Arts in Farnham. The students took inspiration from the natural beauty of the heath, exploring the wildlife, geology and history to develop a series of temporary artworks which form part of a circular art trail. This year the trail includes artworks made from clay bricks, glass, felt, ceramic and natural materials. Glass MA Student Pratibha Mistry is interested in the unseen root architecture beneath our feet on the heath. She visualises these important underground foundations on glass panels mounted on tree trunks. Ana Maria Lopes creates simple ceramic bird forms that seem to

flock and hover over the heather. For the first time an MA Contemporary Jewellery student, Yume Tanaka, has taken part and focused on the unexplainable feelings she experienced on her walks around the heath creating tiny 3D printed forms which she then felted. Heathland Artworks provides a new way to view and learn about the heath and forms part of Farnham Craft Month, a month-long celebration of craft showcasing new talent and local craft businesses across Farnham and the surrounding area.
“This year the trail includes artworks made from clay bricks, glass, felt, ceramic and natural materials”
Ali Clarke, Programme Coordinator for Surrey Hills Arts comments; “It is always a joy seeing how students use different crafts to respond to the heathland. This year feels an even more important time to be able to experience art outdoors, to celebrate our treasured landscapes and be part of Craft Month as Farnham is declared a World Craft City.” Heathland Artworks is free of charge and open to visitors from 1st-30th October. Parking is available at the Rural Life Centre, Tilford, during opening hours.

Making Change in Victorian Britain 17 November 2020 – 21 March 2021. Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village W A Atkinson, The First Public Drinking Fountain, oil on canvas, 1859-60. The Museum of the Home, London.

an art change the future? In the midto late-nineteenth century, Victorian artists, viewers and critics increasingly believed it could. Opening at Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village on 17 November, Art & Action: Making Change in Victorian Britain will be the first exhibition to focus on the Victorian roots of art activism. From the 1840s, as issues of poverty, hunger and disease all became increasingly urgent in industrial Britain, a number of artists began to question how their art could benefit society. Art & Action: Making Change in Victorian Britain explores how artists sought not only to comment on social problems but to use their art to actively help solve them. The exhibition features key works by Sir Luke Fildes, Thomas Kennington and William Morris, which will be exhibited alongside G F Watts’s radical series of early social realist works (Found Drowned, Under a Dry Arch, Song of the Shirt, all 1847, Watts Gallery Trust). Art & Action: Making Change in Victorian Britain reveals how, in the Victorian era, art came to be recognised as a powerful tool that could enact social change, improve lives and ultimately shape the future. Often working in conjunction with social

movements, Victorian artists were at the frontline of reform efforts. From harrowing scenes of deprivation to idealised, sympathy-inducing images of suffering, artists believed in the power of art, which they hoped would have direct emotional effects on their viewers and ultimately lead to policy changes. Such stark contemporary scenes were painted and exhibited on an unprecedented scale in British art of the period. The exhibition includes Sir Luke Fildes’s Applicants for Admission to a Casual Ward (1874, Royal Holloway, University of London) one of the most celebrated works by one of the foremost social-realist artists in Victorian Britain. While many praised the painting, recognising it as a significant call to arms, some took offence at this panoramic portrayal of destitute families queueing for overnight accommodation in a workhouse. One critic from the Saturday Review deemed it ‘too revolting for an art which should be to please, refine and elevate’. The exhibition culminates with Watts Gallery’s founders, G F and Mary Watts. This artist-couple were united in their shared belief that art had the power to create significant social change. wattsgallery.org.uk @WattsGallery Facebook/wattsgalleryartistsvillage

However, it has also been designed as a nature reserve and is thoughtfully managed by a professional team who are experts in conservation and arboriculture. Their aim is to create an ideal and protected habitat for indigenous flora and fauna to flourish which local people will be able to enjoy for future generations to come. As a cemetery Clandon Wood provides a peaceful and natural environment to be laid to rest and a place those left behind will feel welcome and at ease visiting for contemplation and remembrance. If planning ahead plots can be purchased in advance of being needed as well of course at the time of bereavement, located anywhere one chooses within the grounds which could be amongst the flowers and grasses of the meadows, between the trees or near one of the two lakes. During more normal times the attractive modern glass pavilion within the grounds is used for funeral services which is also used for gatherings or wakes after a committal. And there is an on-site office open and staffed by Clandon Wood’s friendly team seven days a week. However, under the restrictions resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic all funeral services are now conducted outside which in the beautiful and natural surroundings have proved very popular, with up to 30 mourners being allowed to attend.
4 0 O C TO B E R 2 0 2 0
And for those not able to be present the live outdoor webcast service has been widely used, with one recent service attracting over 80 invited viewers. It is hoped to open the pavilion for funeral services again as the days become cooler and to allow for a similar number of mourners in attendance. Christina Lawson, who manages the on-site team says: “We work hard to provide a warm and welcoming environment for any visitor be they bereaved, someone who is planning ahead and thinking about securing a plot or if just to visit us as a nature reserve.” The only way to really appreciate what Clandon Wood has to offer is to come and see it first hand. And in Christina’s words: “you will always be very welcome”. And on a final note Clandon Wood is delighted that it has just received the Natural Burial Ground of the Year 2020 Gold Award for the second year running. clandonwood.com

Silverback spotted in Surrey!?
New decade, new digs for design agency
D
eep in the undergrowth of Surrey, a troop of design specialists have nested in a recently converted barn. Silverback® – as in the gorilla – is the name of Malcolm Gilbertson’s team of designers and marketeers, who have roamed just over the border from Sussex to Surrey in their 10th year of trading. They are marking the move with a distinctive new identity to celebrate what they do best: powerful, intelligent design. Mal founded Silverback® when his observation and personal experience of design agencies was that some of them fell short of his ethical standards of doing things properly, for the right reason, and treating staff well. Silverbacks are distinctive, inquisitive and loyal, the qualities Mal wanted in his company and creative output – hence the name. Silverback® specialise in brand strategy and visual identity, offering a full range of services including branding, creative, digital and copy. The troop hasn’t changed much over the decade, just grown. The culture has always been based on the following principles: be bold, be genuine, be instinctive, be playful and work in collaboration – just like the gorilla! A big part of the Silverback® ethos is working collaboratively, as the creative partner to their clients. This has earned trust and loyalty, with several client relationships as old as the company. When a male gorilla comes of age around 10-12 it matures from blackback to the distinctive ‘silverback’ colouring. As Silverback® create distinctive identities for their clients, they felt they should demonstrate this by updating their own. The move to their stylish new offices seemed like the perfect opportunity to do this – it’s a way of showing potential clients that Silverback® have earned their stripes and are ready for the next chapter.

PARKSIDE: More than just an Education
P
arkside School is a wonderful environment where children’s curiosity is awakened. Their journey is one of discovery; where talents and passions are nurtured and developed, and pupils are encouraged to take responsibility for their learning. At Parkside, pupils develop the courage to rise to each challenge, persevere when the going gets tough and face their fears with confidence. The positive message of ‘make it happen’ underpins the whole approach to the learning journey and is at the forefront of all the pupils’ minds. They are supported to take risks and persist with any obstacles they may encounter on their journey. The belief is that taking risks ensures complete development, resulting in a sense of pride and determination coupled with an unrivalled work ethic; invaluable in gaining success for their future. Inspired teaching, passionate and dedicated staff, together with excellent facilities, set in 45 acres, ensure delivery of a dynamic and innovative curriculum. Knowing the pupils individually is what makes time at Parkside more than just an education. Academic excellence, outstanding sporting achievements, dynamic technological enterprise and exciting performing arts are all underpinned by exceptional pastoral care, which assists the boys in achieving the best academic results. Parkside has been selected as one of five finalists in the UK as Best Independent Boys’ School 2020. This has been largely accredited, not only to the values, aims and ethos mentioned, but also to its colossal efforts in providing a continued outstanding education during the Covid 19 crisis. During lockdown, live lessons, including Forest

A dedicated YouTube channel was set up and added humour to the home school day, with teachers illustrating cricket skills dressed as hot dogs together with outtakes from videos created. Weekly, personalised work packs were collected at the drive thru collection point, to provide nonscreen based activities, such as the photography challenge, and ensured pupils spent time away from their desk. Frequent, honest and calm communication continued, together with the fortnightly newsletters, and kept the Parkside family updated as well as welding the community closer than ever during a time when isolation was a huge risk. Parkside’s admissions are flourishing and September 2020 saw a multitude of new starters paying testament to its successes.

Tighten your skin, reduce sagging, wrinkles and fine lines! Dr Peter Forrester and Ms Helen McEnvoy offer the option of combining Profhilo with INTRAcel, our proven and long-established radio-frequency micro-needling treatment. Together they are an unbeatable combination. INTRAcel
Profhilo
Dr Peter Forrester and Ms Helen McEnvoy have been using INTRAcel skin rejuvenation for over 5 years. During this time they have witnessed the introduction of many other non-surgical skintightening treatments. Usually well publicised, celebrity endorsed and very expensive. They are promoted with before and after photographs showing results that are rarely achievable in practice. Dr Forrester and Ms McEnvoy continue to be impressed with the results of INTRAcel and believe that it offers a better and more cost effective result than most of the new ‘trendy’ techniques. INTRAcel cleverly combines the two established techniques of micro-needling and radio-frequency (RF) skin tightening. INTRAcel delivers short bursts of RF energy into the deeper layers of the skin. Recovery from an INTRAcel treatment is usually quick; at the end of the treatment the skin will be red like a sunburn sensation for a few hours, this will diminish after 1-2 days. A toned and tightened effect will be immediately noticeable after a treatment but the full effect will develop over the subsequent weeks. There will be improvement after the first treatment, however a course of 3 at 4-6 week intervals is recommended. Following this improvements will continue for up to 6 months as healthy collagen develops.
Profhilo is an exciting and unique rejuvenation product for the face, neck and décolletage, being unlike any other skin treatment on the market. Dr Forrester and Ms McEnvoy always look critically at new treatments and never jump on the bandwagon until they have had time to evaluate the exaggerated claims made by some manufacturers and occasionally other practitioners. They have regularly used Profhilo since Summer 2017 and hence have had a good opportunity to evaluate its effects. They are now convinced Profhilo is a safe, effective and innovative product. Profhilo is designed to improve skin laxity, texture and lines by stimulating collagen and elastin production. This effect combined with increased hydration will produce a subtle lifting and tightening effect. Although Profhilo is composed of Hyaluronic

Acid (HA) it is not a filler and is aimed at achieving a very different effect from all the currently available HA fillers such as Restylane, Juvederm or Belotero. It will not add excessive volume and hence there is no risk that a Profhilo treatment will result in an obviously filled or ‘pillow face’ look. It is manufactured by IBSA, a long-established and highly reputable Swiss company and was first launched in Italy in 2015 and subsequently in
the UK in January 2016. Since launch there have been an increasing number of positive reviews and opinions in the media. A Profhilo treatment is quick and easy. Just 5 small injections of Profhilo are administered to each side of the face. Discomfort is minimal and other than the possibility for a small bruise there is no downtime. There will be an initial increase in hydration, but the main effects will build over the following weeks. A second treatment must be given 4 weeks later to maximise the beneficial effects.
Profhilo can: • Improve overall skin quality • Increase skin firmness • Increase hydration and elasticity of the skin

for its skin rejuvenation and scar reducing results. The treatment delivers significant results on all skin types and across a wide range of conditions such as: stretch marks, scars (surgical or acne scars), deep wrinkles, fine lines, pigmentation, and age spots which can all be treated very effectively. Not only will the Laser remove these unwanted skin conditions and signs of ageing, quickly and efficiently, but also, kicks start the process of developing new collagen and stimulates cell repair, helping the skin condition to be a thing of the past and leaving you with transformed new skin. As seen in Daily Mail, Ok! Magazine, ITV, working alongside ITV’s Dr Hilary Jones, The Harley Street Journal and Johnson & Johnson.
“The clinic offers an array of industry leading safe, non-invasive technologies which Lisa uses to create her notorious Signature Skin Treatments” As we age communication between the cells diminishes within the skin, resulting in decreased collagen production and accumulation of degraded elastin fibres. Lisa’s treatments function as a natural trigger to help accelerate newer cells to the surface, allowing the epidermis and dermis to communicate more efficiently. The clinic is one of only a handful in the UK to offer the Cool Laser, which has been made famous in Beverly Hills and is loved by the Kardashians 5 4 O C TO B E R 2 0 2 0

Jenny Green founded Finesse Facial Aesthetics as a result of her own mission to find a solution to a skin problem. Suffering for years with rosacea, a condition that causes bright red skin and spots that never seemed to heal up, she was too embarrassed to leave the house without a thick layer of foundation. Her discovery of medical grade skin care was the key to her recovery and the transformation of her skin to the absolute best it’s ever been. Jenny knew she had to help others in a similar situation. She trained in the same skin care that helped her so much, and now offers this to her patients with great success. At Finesse Facial Aesthetics she provides valuable education along with solutions to skin concerns such as ageing, acne, rosacea and hyperpigmentation, through ethical, natural, science backed products and services. Laser and light to your rescue
S
kin ageing is characterised by dryness, thinning, loss of elasticity, wrinkles, pigmentation and broken tiny blood vessels called telangiectasia. A study of ageing skin shows thinning of the top layer of the skin, a reduction of collagen, elastin fibers and hyaluronic acid all of which are responsible for skins thickness, elasticity and hydration. Rejuvenation involves the use of various methods including chemical peels, microdermabrasion, skin boosters, micro needling, lasers and light therapies. The many laser devices available today can be confusing. Lasers have been used for skin rejuvenation since 1980. Early laser treatments were aggressive and were associated with long social downtime. The use of lower power lasers and better understanding of laser skin interactions, as well as healing, resulted in shorter downtime without compromising efficacy. Lasers are classed as ablative or non-ablative. Ablative lasers deliver heat to the superficial layers of the skin and vaporise it. This is used to treat scars, pigmentation, and severe wrinkles. Ablative procedures are generally associated with longer recovery compared with non-ablative treatments. Non-ablative lasers penetrate the skin and target pigment or hemoglobin without heating superficial layers and are used for skin rejuvenation, permanent hair reduction, removal of veins and pigmentation as well as skin tightening. They are less aggressive and have shorter recovery time. The efficiency of non-ablative lasers is less compared with ablative lasers making them suitable for less severe photoaging. Both ablative and non-ablative lasers have modes which penetrate the skin in a fractionated pattern leaving columns of intact tissue, facilitating faster healing particularly when combined with growth factors and antioxidants.

Exercise Safely to Boost Covid Immunity
C
ovid-19 has changed the way we have been able to exercise. With gym closures, many people have taken up new exercises to lose weight and keep fit. Studies have shown that regular exercise boosts your immune system, which is particularly crucial in the fight against covid-19. With many people turning to running and online exercise classes which they may not be used to, physiotherapists and osteopaths around the country have found a significant increase in exercise related injuries. The most common are inflammation or irritation of a tendon as a result of over-use or strain on a joint which causes pain and tenderness just outside the joint and lower back pain. Reduced daily physical activity during lockdown has led to loss of fitness. Evidence shows that the capacity to perform aerobic activities is reduced after 2-4 weeks of inactivity, as the heart has less ability to push blood. To avoid injuries, it is fundamental to follow the right progressive path when returning to sport. The best way to avoid injuries includes strength training and easing back into exercise slowly. Physiotherapists and Osteopaths can diagnose and provide hands-on treatment for any current injuries you may have, as well as advise you on a

safe return to sports, exercises and activities. Your therapist should have easy access to diagnostic imaging if required as well as being able to offer treatment modalities such as ESWT and Laser therapy. Increasingly they are working within a multidisciplinary team such as at RRMG to allow support from Consultants in Orthopaedic Medicine (Sports Doctors) should the injury not respond to treatment.

Homes for changing times S
Aspire Luxury Properties
taying indoors has made us value our homes more than ever. Especially our kitchens which remain the beating heart of the home. As a new way of living is thrust upon us, we have been reimagining how our rooms could better suite us as individuals and families. During this time at home we have become weekend bakers, aspiring chefs, dine-in pros, home workers, teachers, crafters. Most importantly we have become stronger as families and we have now been given more opportunity to cook and dine together. The future of kitchen and cabinetry design will inevitably change and become more multifunctional going forward, better use of the space we have and a growing necessity for more storage for dry goods, refrigerated and frozen food. Hygiene too, will play an important consideration in the design process, so larger easy clean worksurfaces will now be a must. Every room will need to become more versatile adapting to the need for a quiet workspace during the day whilst acting as beautiful backdrop for our zoom calls, to evening home learning for our little ones while preparing a family dinner. These changing trends will call for more creative and bespoke cabinetry that will make the most of your space. Perfectly Bespoke is exactly that, cabinetry designed and built entirely from

scratch. We are all individual and have different needs, visions, and opinions of the world, so why shouldn’t our homes be individual to? What works for the Jones’s next door won’t necessarily work for you. Using a truly bespoke, made to measure company to design your kitchen and custom cabinetry throughout your home, would seem like a great idea. Find a company who really listens to how you live, work, and play in your home. A company who is not bound by pre-made specifications, and can maximise every millimetre to its fullest potential. Cabinetry can be and should be for life. By choosing hand painted furniture, when your tastes change or you just need to refresh your home, all it will take is a fresh coat of paint and new handles to create a completely different stunning look which is truly timeless. Turner and Foye treat everyone as unique and start every project getting to know you. From the moment you walk into their Esher showroom, right through to final fitting and beyond, they are with you every step of the way.

How a VIRTUAL bathroom design can become your own bathroom REALITY…
I
n recent years, the process of selecting and installing a new bathroom has become much less daunting a task for the consumer. There have been numerous developments in bathroom design software which have enabled the Bathe & Beyond bathroom showroom to accurately create a rendition of the proposed scheme for the consumer to become familiar with, easily make amendments to, and confirm that they are happy with, prior to ordering and installation. Where once drawings and sketches were the norm, 3D imagery has become the standard. This has enormous visual advantage, of that there is no doubt, but often the client has difficulty with the lengthy verbal explanations that go with the design in front of them. Bathe & Beyond has gone one step further, introducing a 4D bathroom design immersive experience where consumers can gain confidence in their choices by really “feeling” the new bathroom before their purchase, and the sense of getting lost during the verbal explanation of the 3D version is eradicated. Commonly, people have issues with spatial awareness and are therefore not highly tuned in to the issues of spacing between chosen pieces and thus they are not always aware if the bathroom would actually be comfortable to use. It’s the balance between beautiful to look at and comfortable to use that is often not fully achieved. Bathe & Beyond’s 4D experience tackles this issue literally “head on” as, when wearing the futuristic 4D headset to view a design, you are transported into your very own new bathroom and are able to open furniture drawers, stand inside shower enclosures, reach for taps and so forth. Instead of looking from the outside in to your design, you are

in the design. The advantages to both client and Bathe & Beyond are various and numerous. Having experienced your new bathroom prior to purchasing it, you are much less likely to suffer what’s known as “buyers’ remorse”. Having tried out the drawers, the lights, the taps etc, viewed different colour combinations and eradicated dislikes from the scheme, you are much more likely to have understood and retained the mass of information that is supplied to your during the selection process. It’s a quick and easy process to substitute pieces, move things around, and judge what benefits and drawbacks those changes bring. Silly mistakes are eradicated, customer confidence is increased, and the bathroom designer can be assured that a correct interpretation of the customer’s brief has been produced. nspired by original encaustic floor tile designs, Harvey Maria’s Northmore Collection blends unique decorative pattern, heritage colour pigment and authentic patina. Six colourways have been carefully developed to form a beautifully natural palette, to enhance both traditional and more contemporary interiors. Throughout the mid-19th century encaustic floor tiles became increasingly fashionable. Individual coloured clays were pressed and fired
into the tile to create these remarkably robust and beautiful floors. Celebrated pottery company, Mintons, is recognised as the pioneer. Today, these designs form the inspiration behind Northmore. Harvey Maria has reinterpreted these iconic Victorian floor tiles to create a collection that stands up to the demands of modern home life - form, function, warmth and acoustics. The range includes three earth-grey neutrals – Pembroke Slate, Soapstone and Mortar – along with Waterhouse Blue, Sable Black - and Fired Terracotta to follow. “Many original encaustics, that were covered up in the 60’s and 70’s, have been rediscovered and lovingly restored. Our own Northmore designs celebrate these stylish and durable tiles, capturing their essence for modern living,” explained Harvey Maria’s Founder, Mark Findlay. Harvey Maria has been creating luxury vinyl tiles since 1995. Its floors are incredibly durable and easy to maintain. They are completely waterproof, slip resistant and compatible with underfloor heating - and this makes Northmore perfect for kitchens and pantries, bathrooms, utility rooms and conservatories. The resilient floor finish is easy to care for by sweeping or mopping with a neutral detergent; no harmful chemicals needed. To find out more, visit harveymaria.com

Home Technology: The what, why, where, how and current trends
S
martcomm offers a full audio visual and home automation design, installation and support service. We spoke with Guy Murray, a Smartcomm Home Automation Specialist, to find out how home technology can improve our homes and what the current trends are. “Every home we work on, requires detailed thinking and extreme care. When we present our concept design of all areas, we prepare 3D-models. When planning layouts, we work hard to ensure the integrity of the interior design is maintained or even enhanced. We look at delivering a flow that allows the family to transition seamlessly between downtime, work and play. Millions have switched to a new working model and we see this impacting client briefs for home working. Now our projects encompass the latest technologies for wider collaboration with colleagues and clients. These include unified communications, incorporating Microsoft Teams and Zoom, plus stable Wi-Fi distribution and Network security. This makes working from home more secure and delivers the professional experience, look, and feel our clients expect. Converting a garage or a spare room into a stunning home cinema or media room is very popular and perfect for home entertainment. We have seen vast evolution in home automation systems over the 20 years we have been in business. This has allowed us to offer a greater depth of personalisation with a wider range of intelligent functionality, via user-friendly devices such as voice control, iPads, phones, and touch-panels. We are skilled in taking technically advanced systems and turning them into easy,

intuitive, adaptable solutions for day-to-day life. From security features, intelligent shading, sound zoning, scene setting, and holiday mode, each home automation solution is uniquely developed and programmed to the client’s needs. Sustainability is another key trend; and we look at ways technology can help such as intelligent lighting which turns itself off, blinds and curtains that open and close to control the temperature within the home, thus reducing energy usage. At the moment we are seeing minimal design to finishes. Less is more when selecting high quality finishes such as simple, sleek face plates for wall panels. We are known for transforming tired rooms into spectacular spaces, though what really sets us apart from other suppliers, is our breadth of service and our stringent quality assurance system. We offer the whole range, from design, supply, project management and installation to follow on service and support. We are manufacturer agnostic, choosing only the best solutions for our clients and we use our purchasing power to generate savings for them too. We pride ourselves on delivering systems and solutions for a wide range of budgets, which complement, and are sympathetic to, the lifestyles of our clients and the fabric of their homes.

Autumn Wall Decor Colours I
ntroducing an original marbled range of wallpapers and prints made in the traditional Japanese Art of Suminagashi, meaning ‘floating ink’. Each piece is unique and colours are chosen for individual interiors and seasons. For Autumn 2020 colours are chosen in burnt orange, luxe blues and warm metallics such as bronze & gold. The process of Suminagashi involves colours being placed on the water surface, which then begin to expand on the water. They are only encouraged to move by air, nothing else disturbs the surface. The colours move in an organic way when a dynamic pattern has been shaped, Natascha makes a print by placing and moving the paper on the water. Both wallpaper making & paper marbling have been listed as an endangered craft by the Heritage Crafts Association. Driven to preserve these crafts, Natascha brings them alive on larger pieces, as abstract paintings. Therefore making them contemporary and accessible. natmaks.com
