Mandira owns and runs Mandira’s Kitchen, which produces artisan Indian freezer meals – she was picked from hundreds of applicants competing for a life changing contract to stock Aldi stores nationwide. his autumn, Japan House London, located at the heart of Kensington High Street, presents The Carpenters’ Line: Woodworking Heritage in Hida Takayama. This brand new exhibition explores the art of master carpentry, from Japan’s wellknown woodworking region. The exhibition celebrates the essence of Japanese craftsmanship through the story of an enduring woodworking heritage cultivated in the densely forested Hida region of Gifu Prefecture in central Japan. From the raw materials of the Hida forests and the tools developed to work them, to the involvement of Hida craftsmanship in global furniture design of today, visitors to the exhibition will be immersed in extraordinary craftworking legacy. The city of Takayama in Gifu Prefecture has maintained a vibrant woodworking tradition for over 1,300 years, developing in that time an international reputation for its highly skilled carpenters. First recorded in the eighth century CE, the woodworking skills of these craftspeople were provided to the imperial capital in place of taxation, such was the importance placed upon the carpentry techniques originating in Hida. It was the extraordinary skill of these Hida craftspeople that built many of the famous shrines and temples still seen in the ancient capitals of Nara and Kyoto today. Today, the practice of woodworking still thrives in Hida, with internationally renowned workshops well known for their collaborations with international designers, the results of which can be seen in museum collections across the globe. Visitors to The Carpenters’ Line encounter a series of installations demonstrating the legacy of skill and innovation that runs as a continuous strand through Hida’s woodworking history, focussing on woodcraft techniques and materials, technology and innovation, and products. The Carpenters’ Line runs until Sunday 29 January 2023 at Japan House London, 101 – 111 Kensington High Street. Mandira’s Kitchen Competes In Channel 4 Series

urrey business owner Mandira Sarkar, recently appeared on Channel 4’s ‘Aldi’s Next Big Thing’. Mandira owns and runs Mandira’s Kitchen, which produces artisan Indian freezer meals – she was picked from hundreds of applicants competing for a life changing contract to stock Aldi stores nationwide. Hosted by Anita Rani, of Countryfile and BBC Radio 4 and Chris Bavin, of Britain’s Best Home Cook and Eat Well for Less, the six-part series sees suppliers compete in categories such as dinners, baked goods, treats and store cupboard essentials. Products are presented to Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi UK, who deliberates on factors such as price, packaging, shopper demand, and the ability to scale up, before whittling contestants down to just two. The finalists are then given four weeks to address any feedback, before presenting improved products to Julie who decides which product will appear as a Specialbuy in over 970 stores. Mandira, who started the business as a supper club in her kitchen and now employs 16 women, says: “Food is a very emotive thing and we cook all

our meals with a lot of love. Everything is made from scratch, with fresh ingredients – no cans or jars. “I think it’s high time that people in the UK can easily enjoy authentic Indian food at home, and a contract with Aldi would help us to realise this ambition.” The multi-category competition is part of Aldi’s ongoing commitment to locally sourced products. Aldi has pledged to prioritise homegrown suppliers as it works towards spending an additional £3.5 billion a year with British businesses by the end of 2025.

London to Brighton Veteran Car Run 2022 All fired up for

n true tradition, the Royal Automobile Club, in partnership with RM Sotheby’s, will be staging the remarkable event on the first Sunday in November. Crowds can expect a magnificent spectacle with the rare opportunity to watch more than 350+ owners of prized pre-1905 horseless carriages embark upon a 60-mile journey from Hyde Park to Madeira Drive on Brighton’s Last year’s very special 125th anniversary edition of the world’s longest running motoring event was widely acclaimed as one of the best ever. The Veteran Car Run commemorates the Emancipation Run of 14 November 1896, which celebrated the passing into law of the Locomotives on the Highway Act. It was this Act that raised the speed limit for ‘light locomotives’ from 4 mph to 14 mph and abolished the requirement for these

vehicles to be preceded by a man on foot waving a red flag. A group of intrepid early motorists set off from London for the Sussex coast to mark the life-changing moment when motorists were finally given the freedom of the open road and the arrival of a new era of mechanical horsepower. On leaving Hyde Park at the break of dawn at 7am, the veteran cars will pass many iconic landmarks including Buckingham Palace, Horseguards and Big Ben before crossing Westminster Bridge. Participants then leave London via two routes to avoid congestion - one via Clapham Common, Balham, Tooting and Mitcham and the other via Brixton and Streatham Common. Uniting just north of Croydon, the route continues past Sutton on the A217 to Banstead, Tadworth, Reigate and Redhill. From there it takes the A23 to Horley and Crawley where the route heads to Brighton via Pease Pottage, Staplefield, Cuckfield, Ansty, Burgess Hill, Hassocks and Clayton where it joins the A23 for the run into the finish at Madeira Drive. The route ensures there are plenty of fabulous viewing spots for the many thousands of spectators who line the streets to wave the veterans on their way. Indeed, the estimated 720,000 cars that can be plugged in for everyday use in the UK are dwarfed by over 2 million classics aged 20 years and older. he Berkeley has unveiled its Autumn/ Winter 2022 Prêt-à-Portea collection – a playful and stylish selection of couture cakes inspired by designers from Dolce & Gabbana to Jean Paul Gaultier. A firm favourite with fashionistas with a sweet tooth, Prêt-à-Portea gives a contemporary twist to afternoon tea with a collection of bold catwalkinspired creations. This season’s collection opens with Christopher Kane – a striking floral gown with black accents crafted with cheesecake, set on a vanilla crémeux and a crunchy sable biscuit. This is topped with wafer thin Opalys chocolate. Ralph Lauren’s hero coat has been created as a Black Forest gateau: Pain de Gênes sponge with a sour cherry jelly, dark chocolate supreme and vanilla Chantilly, all topped with an oversized chocolate button.

Jean Paul Gaultier’s denim couture gown has been reimagined in Cassis bavarois with a blackcurrant filling, set on a feuilletine base and finished with chocolate shards. Meanwhile, Prada’s camel coat will feature on the cakewalk made from chocolate biscuit, with intricate royal icing including pink statement fur sleeves. Dolce & Gabbana’s fun fur coat and hat combo is immortalised as chequered light sponge in four, bold colours, wrapped in a rainbow of marzipan and topped with a meringue hat. Self Portrait’s bow handbag combines Victoria sponge and orange marmalade, glazed in white icing and encased with Ivoire chocolate. The trademark golden bow is the final flourish. duo of landmark Lamborghinis, a 1969 Miura P400 S Coupe, and a 1981 Countach LP400 S Coupé, both offered from long-term ownership by the same family, will bring a little ‘dolce vita’ to the Bonhams Bond Street Sale, the finale of their Collector Car Calendar in London. Leading the charge is the Miura, Lamborghini’s distinctive first mid-engine sports model which put the Italian firm on the map as a luxury sports car maker. This matching numbers, right-hand drive car with striking red and gold livery, has covered 14,500 miles from new. It is offered from long-term ownership, having been acquired by a respected Sheffield-based classic car dealer in 1995. It has an estimate of £900,000 - £1.2million with No Reserve.

Its successor Countach is the essence of a 1970s supercar, its flamboyant wedge-shape with the instantly recognisable scissor doors, also designed by the Miura’s creator Gandini, appealing to owners such as rock star Rod Stewart. This left-hand drive 1981 ‘S’ version is powered by the Miura’s 4.0-litre engine, with the optional V-shape spoiler and ‘telephone dial’ wheels. Owned by the same late custodian as the Miura since 1985, it has an estimate of £280,000-£340,000, also at No Reserve. Another powerful pair are two flagship supercars from the Mercedes-Benz stable: a 2007 SLR McLaren 722 Edition Coupé, estimate £200,000-300,000, and its soft-top sibling, a 2009 SLR McLaren 722 S Roadster (estimate £250,000-£350,000). Showcasing the combined engineering excellence of Mercedes-Benz and its then Formula 1 partner McLaren, the sportier 722 variants were an homage to Stirling Moss’ 300 SLR in which he won the 1955 Mille Miglia with start number ‘722’. Cédric Grolet Unveils A New Afternoon Tea At The Berkeley The menu evolves and changes with the seasons but for Autumn, Grolet features the chef ’s iconic vanilla flower, a Paris Brest, a pistachio cookie and, for a purist English nod, a scone with cream and jam. The sweet piece de resistance is a glistening trompe-l’œil green apple which, inside, features fresh apple and dill. The savoury goodies are Grolet’s highly intricate take on avocado on toast and a trompe-l’œil burrata which reveals tomato gel and basil pesto when cut open. The Fable adventure began at a vintage fair, where a delicate printed bee scarf dated from the 1940’s was discovered by our founder, crafted from off-cut fabric used for the RAF pilots in World War II. The beautiful bee print symbolised flight, determination and courage. This sparked the idea of telling a tale through prints and delicate hand-painted jewellery. Each represents positivity and inspires kindness to uplift the human spirit, bringing joy to all who possess the Fable charm. Like every story there’s a beginning, and this was ours. Can Exercise help Arthritis?
I
t’s known that exercise is beneficial for our health, but for people with painful joints it could feel like exercising is not possible. Arthritis is a common condition that causes inflammation and pain in the joints. In the UK alone, it is thought more than 10 million people have arthritis or other, similar conditions. While there is no cure for arthritis there are a number of treatments and lifestyle changes that can help ease symptoms. Dr John Outhwaite, Rheumatologist at King Edward VII’s Hospital, explains how not exercising is actually worse for the joints. “If you suffer with the pain and discomfort of arthritis, then exercise may be far from your mind. However, regular exercise can help arthritis sufferers to increase strength and flexibility, improve range of movement and mobility of joints and reduce stiffness. Being physically active can also preserve the density of your bones. All these factors can help to reduce the amount of pain you experience and may help to prevent your discomfort from getting worse.

It’s easy to become locked in the ‘deconditioning cycle’ if you have arthritis. This cycle starts with painful joints, which leads to being less active. This then means that the muscles become weaker, leading to unstable joints and more joint pain when you do move, completing the cycle.” Dr Outhwaite advises that Arthritis sufferers should work out for 30 minutes, at least five times a week. It’s better to choose low impact exercise that puts less pressure on the joints such as walking, swimming and cycling. But you can still push yourself whilst doing these exercises if you wish to, as having arthritis doesn’t mean that you can’t carry out low impact exercises vigorously – you just need to be careful to stay within your limits. Strengthening exercises such as Pilates and yoga are also important to help strengthen your muscles and support your joints. If you’re experiencing a flare up and your joints feel inflamed, hot and swollen, avoid strengthening exercise until your flare up has passed.

A
s we move into Winter, the mood this year is all about comfort. What we’re currently seeking from our homes is to feel calm, relaxed and cosy. They are our personal sanctuaries, designed for no one but those that live within them, and they’ve become spaces where we want to express our unique tastes, personalities and histories. The contemporary home says ‘come on in,’ ‘snuggle into this,’ ‘remember this?’ or ‘have a look at that.’ Combined with our ongoing love-affair with all things natural, the décor emerging for A/W 2022 is soothing, serene and simple, either touched by the organic or with the highly personal embedded into it. These interiors inspire peaceful nights in, thoughtful conversations, happy memories and the occasional wry smile. Here’s the Chapins’ edit of the best.

A NATURAL EMBRACE / GREEN UPHOLSTERY As well as the colours and physical reminder of nature we are bringing into our homes this season, it’s also a representation of how all things natural make us feel. The welcoming embrace of the great outdoors is represented interiors-wise by sumptuous upholstery, tempting textures and cosy sink-into-me cushions, which combined with verdant shades instantly switches the mind into unwinding mode. Sofas and chairs emulate nature in the simplest, clearest of ways, with grounded, unexaggerated tones touched by the forest spanning moss, sage, fern and firs. Their designs also nod to the bucolic, prompting memories of being outside while welcoming you into their cosy, calming arms to ponder the joys of it all. The refreshed take on Arflex’s classic 1970-designed Marenco sofa by Mario Marenco has not only natural colouring, but its plump cushions channel the comforting envelopment that being immersed in greenery can bring. GamFratesi’s Beetle Chair in 3D Veneer, a new wood-wrapped take on the iconic shell-shaped design, sees its rich velvet upholstery take on the characteristics of moss growing across timber. The organic-esque fabric on Giorgetti’s Montgomery chair by Dainelli Studio lures in the eye like a patterned plant, the grassy shade spreading from the seat onto the upper ash wood arms to extend the verdant feel, and simultaneously hard yet soft,

LINE OF SIGHT / LINEAR PENDANT LIGHTS As the nights draw in and the curtains close, it’s time to think about lighting. The designs shepherding us through these darker days are based around simplicity. Not exaggerated. Not attention grabbing. Leading A/W 2022 are linear pendants made from elegant, slimline forms that range from the calligraphic, twisting and turning mid-air, to the steadfastly straightened. Such considered minimalism creates a soothing, easygoing space, one where the eye is pulled upward only momentarily and illumination appears as if from thin air. Decidedly minimalist, the Oneline by artist Kasper Friis Kjeldgaard for Fritz Hansen is a sleek slash of brightness which rotates 360 degrees to cast light in any direction. Moooi’s Gravity Chandelier by Paul Cocksedge is composed of elegant flexible arms which fall naturally in flowing curves, the shapes defined by where its glass shades are positioned. A pair of ultra-delicate rings, Lodes’s Elara pendant by Nika Zupanc is an understated representation of astral motion, its loops silently interacting with and orbiting each other. A suspended arc, Cattelan Italia’s Nahun
lamp by Studio Kronos feels almost typographical, as if drawn in the air with the sweep of a brush, the outer LED strip casting a diffused glow.
ON DISPLAY / GLASS DISPLAY CABINETS 2022 is the time to break those much-loved mementoes and treasured trinkets out of hiding. As part of crafting a home imbued with meaning and personality, we’re ready to put ourselves on display with the bevy of newly launched glassfronted storage pieces and curate our very own cabinets of curiosities. Transparent doors keep items safe and protected yet give them undeniable presence in the room, framing them and presenting collections to passers-by, declaring who you are and telling your story. The blink-and-you’ll-miss-it Audrey cabinet by Pocci&Dondoli for Bontempi is composed almost entirely of extra-transparent glass, diverting all attention onto the objects placed within it. Gallotti&Radice’s Soda cabinet by Draga & Aurel adds to the display’s personality with its playful rounded shape and gold-toned glass, items on shelves interacting with its circular frame. ‘Like a small stage, rich in attention and details, Shibusa tells the story of personal passions’ confirms designer Mauro Lipparini, his cabinet an elegant combination of glass and ash.
A BIGGER SPLASH / TEXTURED GLASS When there is no need for glass to be transparent, designers are taking the opportunity to make it decorative and experimental. Transporting us straight to the shores of the sea, the foot of a waterfall or the reflections in a pond, this there’s a new vogue for textured glass ¬– steeped once again in our desire to be close to nature. Embracing the hypnotic yet soothing traits of water, pieces of glass are rippled and warped like sheets of water blown by the wind, expressions of deft craft skills as well as our collective need to bring the outside in. The surface of Cassina’s Esosoft table by Antonio Citterio feels like an angular slice of gentle river, its thick textured glass taking on the appearance of water softly brushed by a breeze. Bontempi’s aptly named H20 Coffee Table by Studio F+B Design forms a lonely puddle disturbed by undulating concentric rings, as if a stone has just been dropped into it, and Bonaldo’s blown glass Acquerelli Table Lamp by Marco Zito imitates a range of watery expressions, from icy frozen milk white to ripples full of intriguing movement.

Get your protractors out – angles are back. After years of yearning for circles, roundness and eschewing corners, sharpness and straight lines in the home, we’ve started to revolt. These aren’t your usual right-angled tables, it’s a whole lot more creative than that, with designers experimenting with balance, illusion and juxtaposition in materials soft and hard. Oh, and you can forget about the rules of gravity, too. Cassina merges precision and comfort with its Flutz chair by Michael Anastassiades, its sharp parallel aluminium sides sheltering a soft seat within. Unsurprisingly, Bonaldo’s Pisa coffee tables by Mauro Lipparini lean diagonally to the side, balancing themselves with an off-kilter surface or standing thin and tower-like. Square by Jonathan Olivares for Moroso blurs the boundaries between soft and hard, forming cushioned right angles and perfect lines in precise upholstery, while with its new Abat-Jour shade throwing more geometry into the mix, Vitra’s Potence wall lamp by Jean Prouvé shoots sharply upward, mixing the aesthetic of a wall and pendant light. chaplins.co.uk

It is also very important to carefully think through the aspects of wellness. This topic has been very important to our clients who are familiar with Feng Shui and Vastu.
