ne of the most celebrated seasons within the vineyard and winery is harvest. With the 2019 harvest now underway at Denbies, our winery and vineyard team are busy measuring grape sugars, harvesting grapes and transporting them into the winery for their first pressing. With more varied weather conditions during 2019 compared with 2018 and a later start to the growing season, the quality of the fruit is excellent, offering a harvest of great potential. As predicted, Solaris, was the first varietal to ripen, with these full, ripe golden berries hand-harvested from the Dell in the early autumn sunshine. The constant activity in the winery and vineyard captures the excitement and anticipation of the forthcoming vintage. New Surrey Home for Burwood Western Janet Burwood from Burwood Western talks about her journey…

T

he love of horses began very early and grew jnto a passion rapidly as time passed. In a family of petrolheads where the horsepower was connected to 2 or 4 wheels, an affinity with horses was somewhat unexpected.. Learning to ride began around the age of nine making weekly or fortnightly visits to a local riding school in Godstone, Surrey. Sadly this no longer exists and had been given over to residential use, the fate unfortunately of the vast majority of local riding establishments, making riding schools a somewhat scarce resource. These early riding experiences called for crack of dawn starts, long cycle rides, many hours working in all weathers, caring for horses and ponies of various types, large and small, extrovert and grumpy but all with something valuable to teach us. Riding lessons and hacking out over Farthing Downs sparked an interest in going to compete in local shows, and as confidence and ability improved forays into local jumping, Hunter trials, Dressage and latterly Endurance rides followed. A chance encounter at Windsor horse trials changed all that... Whilst watching a Western riding demonstration a lady rider entered the arena on a stunning Quarter

horse in full bling show attire wearing a Stetson, chaps and spurs, proceeding to gallop down the longside of the arena. Impressive, and yes it was, but even more impressive was when she softly said “Whoa” and the horse melted into a graceful stop standing completely still until his rider gave him the next instruction. That is where the Western Journey began in the 1990’s, starting at the bottom as finances could only stretch to the purchase of a yearling colt to bring on and show through in-hand, and then ridden classes learning together as progress was made. Classes were won, Novice then up to Amateur, changes of horse culminating in All-Around trophies, an attic full of beautiful rosettes and World Show qualifications and UK All-Around Champion in 2004. Then came a need for speed. So the step up to Reining, the really fast and technical classes which include the spins, roll-backs and the adrenaline fuelled sliding stops. Asking half a ton of horse to stop from a full gallop produces the biggest rush! The switch up from being an amateur hobbyist to a Professional Coach was really by chance and also being in the right place at the right time. The British Horse Society was moving to ensure that all coaches whatever their sport had the same coaching ability and knowledge of coaching methods and practices, this was so the public would know the standard they could expect within each specific sport along with the added benefit that all coaches would have passed CRB checks, child protection, first-aid and would be insured. As a result the individual sport governing bodies were tasked with asking a cross-section of their members ie; established trainers through to Amateur hobbyist to take part in the first UKCC Coaching certificates. This resulted in a Level 3 Coaching certificate which launched Burwood Western in 2009. The business began part-time initially and when demand grew it blossomed into a full-time job. Freelance coaching involves thousands of miles driving all over the South of England and further on occasion, to coach, advise, cajole and support a variety of clients. The newest development for Burwood Western is to now be resident at Smallfield Riding School in Surrey. Smallfield Riding School is now able to offer Western lessons on a couple of school horses who have had training in western and also tuition on clients own horses in Western which will add to and enhance their already existing range of varied riding experiences. Military Vehicles Day Sunday 17th November 2019, Brooklands Museum

V

isit Brooklands Museum on Sunday 17th November and you will see the historic site in Weybridge welcoming displays of troop carriers, armoured cars, ambulances and a whole host of military vehicles and apparatus used during the last 100 years. Re-enactor and Living History Groups will also be attending representing many conflicts from around the world and the organisers are expecting Willys Jeeps, Land Rovers and personnel carriers. Previous years have seen battalions ‘square bashing’ and parading in the Paddock area in front of the iconic Clubhouse alongside earlier WWI vehicles, trucks, lorries and bomb disposal units. Visitors will also be able to see inside the awardwinning Brooklands Aircraft Factory exhibition housed in the Bellman Hangar which was originally built in December 1940 for the final assembly of Vickers Wellington bombers. The Aircraft Factory and associated displays in the adjoining new Flight Shed tell the story of the ingenuity and skill of the men and women who designed, built and flew aircraft at Brooklands from the early pioneering

days in 1908, through two World Wars and ultimately to the development of supersonic flight. The gates open to the public at 10am and at 11am a bugler will herald in a two-minute silence across the site as a mark of respect for those who have been involved in conflicts across the globe. At noon, a bus courtesy of the on-site London Bus Museum will then take groups of spectators to a viewing area alongside the off-road course at neighbouring Mercedes-Benz World, where some of the lighter military vehicles will be put through their paces on the tricky terrain. A further selection of the lighter military vehicles will line up to tackle ascents of Test Hill at 2.45pm. The Museum’s collections of cars, motorcycles and aircraft will be open as usual with the Concorde Experience and 4D Theatre (featuring three dynamic simulator rides) running all day. The Museum Shop will be packed with games, toys, books, DVDs and other memorabilia and the Sunbeam Café and outside catering will also be open all day. www.brooklandsmuseum.com

his Christmas, Eccleston Yards – the hub for independent retail, wellbeing and coworking developed by Grosvenor Britain & Ireland (‘Grosvenor’) – will illuminate its courtyard with a multi-sensory light installation, titled ‘Wave’. The installation will debut at the London destination from 28 November - 11 January this year, and has been created by internationally renowned artists, Squidsoup. ‘Wave’ will offer visitors an interactive light and voice experience that explores the wonders of colourful illuminations, taking inspiration from the ancient healing concept of Chromotherapy: the science of using the powers of light and colour to balance energy in the body and mind. With 500 individually suspended orbs, each with a unique voice, ‘Wave’ is an all-encompassing, immersive experience that will light up Eccleston Yards and contribute to a calming energy balance for the visitor – synonymous with the wellbeing ethos of Eccleston Yards. Visitors will find themselves entranced as they walk through the installation, listening to evolving hypnotic harmonies created by the orbs. Season in an effort to raise much needed funds for Kids for Kids, virtually the only organisation helping the forgotten children in the rural villages of Darfur, Sudan. This year, our concert is raising funds to plant trees in Darfur, a region at the forefront of Global Warming. The desert is creeping south at a rate of three miles a year. By planting trees, we can reforest and stabilise the Desert, give fruit to hungry children and provide shade from the hot desert sun. Any aid we give will be lost unless we address global warming, which we have been doing for the past decade. To date, Kids for Kids has adopted 100 villages, transforming the lives of over 550,000 people. By introducing an integrated package of sustainable grassroots projects identified by the villagers themselves as things they are in need of most, we are helping people out of poverty long term. Projects range from our key project, a goat loan scheme, to training midwives and first aid workers, planting sustainable forests and fruit trees, to installing water pumps in villages so they have clean, fresh water, to building kindergartens.

magine for a moment…taking a peaceful summer ramble through the Hurtwood, enjoying the typical sounds and sights of a woodland walk, only to have the peace interrupted by the sound of the ‘great guns’ spreading into southern England and resonating around the Surrey Hills. You had thought the only airborne sound was that heard further north, where the skies over Brooklands are filled with Surreymade aircraft being tested before heading off to the Western Front. The large area of deserted common land near your village is now a sea of bell-tents, housing enemy aliens and prisoners of war. At the farm down the road, elephants are now pulling the ploughs and, as if their trunks were purposegrown for the task, bundling hay onto carts. Wheat now sways in the breeze on the course where you enjoyed a round of golf. The conkers your children collect are no longer for entertainment, but to be sent to King’s Lynn for the extraction of acetone for the manufacture of explosive cordite. Your children also love to help collect eggs for the newlyopened Red Cross Hospital at the nearby manor house, at which your eldest daughter is proudly wearing her uniform as a volunteer nurse. Your wife, meanwhile, works for the local women patrol ensuring young soldiers and munitions workers behave in the back rows of the cinema. Your local rector, who speaks fluent German, has aroused suspicion amongst both parishioners and authorities as having pro-German sympathies. On your recent trip to Richmond you have found to your

surprise an array of Belgian shops: a patisserie, a tobacconist, a toymaker and cafes, serving the large number of Belgian refugees now residing there. With the traditional strong focus on the impact of large numbers of local men going off to war and the consequent devastating losses, it may have been hard to imagine the variety of other ways in which the First World War touched life in Surrey, but these and hundreds of other fascinating stories of the War’s impact on the home front have been uncovered by Surrey Heritage over the four-year centenary of the First World War through its National Heritage Lottery Fund-supported project Surrey in the Great War: A County Remembers. More than one hundred volunteers have been researching their localities and contributing information and stories to the project’s website, www.surreyinthegreatwar.org.uk. The discoveries made have now been captured in an engaging and beautifully-illustrated book, In the Shadow of the Great War: Surrey 1914-1922, which, drawing on the rich archives at Surrey History Centre, explores the experiences of those living and working in Surrey at that time. olesden Lacey, the National Trust property nestled within the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, was the weekend party house of Edwardian socialite, Dame Margaret Greville. Mrs Greville was a great collector. When she left Polesden Lacey to the National Trust, her vast collection included fine art, furniture and ceramics, as well as Fabergé, Cartier and even a diamond encrusted bookmark. As you’d expect, Mrs Greville’s epicurean tendencies included jewellery. As well as collecting unset gemstones on her world travels, Mrs Greville was a frequent patron of Boucheron and Cartier; asking them to make and remake pieces from her own collection as well as commissioning new pieces. When Mrs Greville passed away in 1942, she bequeathed “with my loving thoughts” all of her ‘real’ jewellery to the Queen Mother. Some of Mrs Greville’s pieces of jewellery are still worn by the Royal Family today. This Christmas, for the first time, the team at Polesden Lacey are working with contemporary artists Neon to re-imagine rooms in the house. ife Magazines had the privilege of attending an all-female shooting master class at the prestigious Royal Berkshire Shooting School with Michelin star chef Sally Abé, TV cook Clodagh Mckenna, champion England clay pigeon shooter Anita North and food writers with an appetite for learning more about game and to celebrate The Eat Game Awards 2019. The Eat Game Awards (EGAs) were established in 2018 by three dedicated game advocates – James Horne, Chairman of Purdey and founder of Guns on Pegs, Annette Woolcock of Taste of Game and Ranald Macdonald, founder of award-winning Scottish restaurant group, Boisdale. The trip began with a fantastic masterclass in the Berkshire countryside, where we got our eye in shooting clays from expert instructors – a lot of fun and we did ourselves proud! Following classes out in the gorgeous school grounds, we had the pleasure of tasting various delicious game recipes created by Head Chef of London’s only Michelin-starred gastro pub The Harwood Arms, Sally Abé. Sally cooked her signature Faggot dish (see recipe) for our starter, followed by tender wood pigeon with sweet corn and girolles for our main. We also got to try a beautiful game terrine starter and grouse with a

The informative and fun event was to celebrate the launch of the Eat Game Awards, which are an important way to rally the nation to support and champion the innovators, creators and revolutionaries in the game world. The Royal Berkshire Shooting School – the finest in the country - was a fitting backdrop. Celebrate Christmas with Tramp

ondon’s Tramp members club has enjoyed a year of celebrations in preparation for its official, 50th anniversary party on December 17 - but for those hoping to squeeze in a last toast, the iconic venue is offering members a luxurious tasting menu to help see in the new year. The club on Jermyn Street has seen in more new years than any of its competitors and just as its first members celebrated the turn of the decade in 1970, corks will pop and champagne will flow around the tables of the venue’s restaurant and discotheque. The evening will begin with Louis Roederer Brut Premier as guests are invited to take their tables for a seven course menu incorporating Turbot fillet with butter poached langoustines; Beef Wellington served with sauce Périgourdine and Champagne granita. But Tramp’s reputation was not built on fine food alone, and as the final Macaroons are polished off and guests begin to edge towards the dancefloor, it will be the club’s legendary party atmosphere that sweeps the crowd into the year 2020. It is a momentous occasion for the club, not just because it marks the end of their 50th anniversary celebrations, but because the team have been busy ensuring the next half decade is as successful as the last. ummer may have been and gone, but the culinary scene in Esher is hotting up. The standout restaurant for us though is Seven Bluebirds, who are celebrating their 1st birthday and continue to deliver consistently excellent food and service. Their ethos since opening has been to deliver fresh, well cooked food made from scratch, served in a comfortable environment with attentive, but not overbearing service. Their Dinner menu still changes seasonally, with a few tweaks here and there mid season and currently features, amongst many other things, a house smoked and grilled pork chop with pineapple and jalapeño salsa. Also a fantastic starter is the Harissa Cream Cheese stuffed and Tempura battered Courgette flower. On the dessert front, the one that caught our attention, and delivered a truly theatrical piece of culinary craftsmanship, was their “Campfire S’mores”. Truly a sensory masterpiece that comes to the table still smoking and really did make one feel that you were sitting around a campfire toasting marshmallows. Their weekend brunch menu is really quite unique for the area with Chicken & Waffles featuring high up on the “must have” list as well as their very special burger, made in house of course, and so popular that they are considering making it available on Deliveroo! Our favorite though has to be the Bluebird Benny, their riff on Eggs Benedict which substitutes the ham for smashed avocado and fried halloumi. Thankfully its not only on the weekend brunch menu, but also on the breakfast menu, which is served all day Tuesday to Sunday. For those that can’t always make it out to Seven Bluebirds for dinner, we’re told that they will

Christmas at Kew 2019 Brand new trail to illuminate the magnificent Treetop Walkway and Temperate House 20 November 2019 –5 January 2020 In another mirroring of nature, Australian studio Mandylights brings Vines to the trail. A 30-metrelong promenade of LED vines that visitors can walk through, touch and interact with, each vine houses up to 8,000 individual colour-changing pixels, making for an otherworldly immersive experience. Throughout the trail, Kew’s own natural splendours will feature prominently, highlighting the beauty of nature, and the importance of plants in all our lives. Trees along the route will be illuminated from different angles, allowing visitors to admire their striking winter forms. Branches will be wrapped with tiny blossom shaped lights to create a sparkling cherry tree walkway.

his winter, more twinkling and fantastical than ever before, Christmas at Kew returns, inviting visitors to experience the night time beauty of a new trail, illuminated by over one million lights. The route will include some incredible showstoppers, such as the recently restored Temperate House – the largest surviving Victorian glasshouse in the world – which will form the canvas for a kaleidoscopic laser show. Visitors can expect bursts of colour and enchanting optics with a feast of art, light and music at every turn.

Myths and magic… French creative Studio Pitaya is bringing Bifröst to Christmas at Kew, drawing inspiration from the bridge of light in Norse mythology. Set at the beginning of the trail, visitors can wander through a tunnel of 20 light arcades, the hypnotic animations bringing them through to the magical landscape beyond. Australian studio Mandylights returns with Will o’ the Wisps. The installation sees thousands of pixel mapped ‘wisp’ forms perform in different ways to reflect their diverse origins - from devilish displays of red mischief, to soft glowing orbs, to explosions of vibrant colour. Visitors can also meander through a Fire Garden with enchanted ruby and emerald flames, as pyrotechnic artist Mike Jones brings his spellbinding work to Kew.

A tumbling waterfall and forest of vines… The centrepiece of this year’s event, Brighton-based ITHACA will bring Waterfalls to Kew’s arboretum. With four spiralling columns of light cascading from the Treetop Walkway in the canopy above, the mesmerising display will captivate visitors with dazzling reflections and a ‘Sea of Light’ at their feet.

The renowned Palm House finale will feature festive projections playing across a giant screen of water in the centre of the lake, and across the iconic glasshouse itself.

CHELSEA PENSIONERS INSPECT THE RANKS OF BRITAIN’S FRESHEST CHRISTMAS TREES

A

group of Chelsea Pensioners – the retired army veterans who live at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, famous for their scarlet uniforms – had a surprise tour of duty at Yattendon Estates in Berkshire for the Christmas trees that will soon be raising money for the historic institution.. The trip was organised by Capital Christmas Trees, who will be providing freshly harvested trees directly from the estate to be sold in the Royal Hospital’s elegant South Grounds. Home of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show on the Embankment, The Royal Hospital will offer a superb selection of fresh trees giving London families the chance to pick out their own special tree and know that it’s as fresh as if they had travelled to Yattendon Estates themselves. This is the first time that the Royal Hospital has sold Christmas trees, and a commission on every sale will help to raise funds for the Grade I listed buildings, which was commissioned by Charles II and designed by Sir Christopher Wren as a permanent home for old soldiers. The Chelsea Pensioners spent the day as guests of Lord Iliffe, who lives and works at Yattendon Estates. He was a pioneer of the UK Christmas tree industry in the 1970s and has seen the farm operation expand to harvest more than 50,000 trees each year. Allan McLaren, Acting Head of Fundraising at the Royal Hospital, said: “We would like to thank Capital Christmas Trees and Lord Iliffe for offering our retired soldiers a great day out and a chance to get into the Christmas spirit a little earlier than usual! We are really looking forward to selling these lovely trees and we are sure they will be very popular in Chelsea. isit Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village, Guildford in Surrey, to discover an exhibition dedicated to exploring the life and art of the Victorian Orientalist artist John Frederick Lewis (1804-1876) – Until 3rd November 2019 Between 1827 and 1840 Lewis made numerous trips to Europe, travelling through Spain and Italy. From 1840, he travelled to Constantinople and on to Cairo in 1841 where he remained, detached from the London art scene, for a decade. Of all of the European artists to make the Eastern pilgrimage in the nineteenth century, Lewis is unique in staying for such a prolonged period. He settled in the Islamic quarters of Cairo where he lived in a traditional upper-class house, which would provide the backdrop for many compositions. During this period, Lewis created an array of detailed and vivid sketches that convey his fascination in the architecture, light and exoticism of the region. When Lewis returned to London in 1851 he brought with him a substantial body of work that would provide a wealth of inspiration for the rest of his artistic career. This exhibition will be underpinned by an exploration of Lewis’s evolving and experimental self-fashioning. While living in Cairo, he was famously described as a ‘languid Lotus-eater’ leading a ‘dreamy, hazy, lazy, tobaccofied life’ by his close friend William Makepeace Thackeray. Despite being absent from the London art world for a decade, on his return he was received with critical acclaim assimilating straight into the heart of the establishment. INTRODUCING REZUM What is it?

Rezūm is a novel steam or water vapour treatment for BPH (benign prostate hypertrophy). Steam energy is used to ablate (or remove) the particular part of the prostate that enlarges and causes symptoms due to BPH. The procedure is done as a day case and is an option for men who fail or cannot tolerate medical treatment for their obstructive urinary symptoms. Longer lasting Autumn Colour Redhead or brunette? Claire Spreadbury reveals how to make your colour last longer this season.

O

h, how we love autumn. The hues of the season are so stylish, and they suit almost everybody. Much like the colours on the catwalk, hair is becoming warmer and more lustrous, too. But if you opt for a full head of gorgeously-rich red or deep chocolate, how can you ensure your colour lasts? We asked the experts for their top tips...

Shampoo with care “When your hair is freshly coloured, avoid shampooing for 72 hours to allow the cuticle to recover, as this will prevent initial fading,” says celebrity stylist and colourist Edward James. “If you have a very oily scalp, consider using a cowash and ditch the shampoo at least a couple of times a week. Shampoos cleanse hair more and result in colour molecules being cleansed away. You could also consider getting a water softener, as this will prevent a build up of minerals from dulling your hair. And avoid very hot water, as this will speed up colour fade.”

Go ionic “In the colder autumn months, we tend to blast our hair dry more frequently than letting it air dry, which will increase colour fade; brunettes will tend to go more brassy; blondes more yellow and reds and coppers more dull,” continues James. 78 NOVEMBER 2019

“Try investing in an ionic hairdryer, which emits negatively-charged ions that break down water molecules faster, and allow your hair to more easily absorb moisture. The ions also flatten the hair cuticle which adds shine, but also prevents your colour from fading over time.”

Banish sulphates “Use a sulphate-free colour shampoo and conditioner,” advises colour specialist Christel Lundqvist, founder and director of Stil Salon. “It seems like a simple aftercare tip, but it’s crucial to be able to prolong vibrant coloured hair, as every time you wash your hair, colour will fade. The gentle shampoo will cleanse the hair with a minimum fade effect and the conditioner will seal the cuticle locking pigments in.” Try Smith England Guardian Colour Shield Shampoo and Conditioner, £8 each, Sainsbury’s.

Refresh more and dryshampoo less “Lengthen times between shampooing to keep your hair looking vivid for longer,” says James. “Although dry shampoo is still a massive life saver for many, it tends to have the downside of making hair feel drier, as it essentially absorbs oil and creates more friction between hair strands - with the result being ‘fresher’ looking hair that is also more dehydrated. Using a scalp and hair reviver,

rather than a dry shampoo, is the way to go, particularly if you want to reduce how much you wash your hair to prevent colour fade. A hair and scalp refresher revives and refreshes second-day styles and also reduces frizz. “Aveda Rinseless Refresh, £24, is a new product which helps tame frizz. Micellar technology refreshes the scalp and it’s very lightweight, so perfect for finer hair. Oribe also has Cote d’Azur Hair Refresher, which is designed to refresh second-day hair by neutralising odour and adding condition (£22, SpaceNK.com).”

Give your colour a boost Keeping hair vibrant when it may be damaged from summer sun can be a challenge says Tom Smith, colour director at Billi Currie: “The condition of the hair must be restored in order for the colour molecules to remain stable. A great way of keeping your autumnal tones ‘salon fresh’ while conditioning your hair at the same time, is a custom-mixed pigmented conditioner. Overcome dehydration from central heating “Just like our skin, hair becomes dehydrated and this is made worse with artificial central heating,” notes James. “To overcome the drying effects, it’s worth using a weekly hair treatment on your hair. I’m a huge fan of Philip Kingsley Hair Elasticizer Treatment.” (Try the new Elasticizer Therapies Balancing Rose & Lychee Deep Conditioning Treatment, £21.50.) James adds: “In addition to treatments, make sure you seal your hair in the autumn. Use a couple of drops of hair oil or a leave-in moisture treatment. Q4 2019 Property Market Report - Surrey

A

s a property agent the question I get asked on a daily basis is “how is the market?” After nearly 30 years in the business and having seen numerous recessions and booms I’m normally able to accurately forecast where we are going, up, down or sideways. I doubt however there is many property experts currently that would want to take a bet on what is going to happen, these are unprecedented times for everyone, buyers, sellers, agents, investors and tenants. What we can do is to look at the facts and try to individually make the best informed decisions we can. Naturally one of the main stumbling blocks in the market is uncertainty over Brexit. Once we leave (and lets all hope this is resolved imminently) then there is no doubt there will be pent up demand waiting to move. But will this be the tidal wave that many predict? I’m not so sure but it will relieve some of the pressure and create some fluidity again. For some Brexit will be positive and for others not and that will translate back into the property market. We may see less people entering the country and more people leaving. This could free up housing stock at all levels whether its studio flats or large family homes and that will keep the market soft, we’re already seeing clear evidence of this. That said, there any many people waiting to move, first time buyers, downsizers, side shifters so more stock and reasonable pricing will be welcomed by them. These 2 things colliding I hope will mean a slower and more progressive growth in the market than we’ve seen in previous decades. The private rental sector has been kicked to death by the government recently and this is already resulting in lower stock levels. I do not see this changing in the short to medium term and so without doubt, rents will rise for the next 5+ years. That’s not good for renters but it is good for the hardened landlords who have braved the recent storms. I’d say it’s certainly a good 110 NOVEMBER 2019

time to be sniffing out some investment bargains for the long term growth. Aside from Brexit, what will really make a difference to all sections of the market is Stamp Duty. If this is reformed correctly then we really will see a change in the property climate and there could be that tidal wave that many long for. Hopefully this is done on a gradual basis so that we see a steady and sustainable return of the market, for everyone’s sake.
