What has become known as “The Sandbanks Weekend” or “The Sandbanks Festival in the sporting and social calendar of the South Coast of England continues to attract the crowds year after year. Curiosity brought people to watch high quality beach polo at Sandbanks for the first few years but since then the parties, hospitality, fashion shows and now a beach rugby element, not to mention the Sandfest music festival on the Sunday, has kept the audience guessing and wanting more. The heavily watered beach arena provides a firm playing surface, and when surrounded by elaborate marquees, staging and grandstands The British Beach Polo Championships, otherwise known as 28 JUNE 2019

This gives polo, over the 2-day event, exposure to a wide variety of people and business platforms. The polo, played under the authority of the Hurlingham Polo Association, attracts 4 competitive medium goal teams of 3 players. Each team plays on both days with a further exhibition game on the Saturday. International teams are welcome and bring an interesting dimension. The event has welcomed Australian, South African, Argentinian, Irish and Welsh teams amongst others. Starting with a champagne reception guests enjoy a delicious 3 course lunch followed by afternoon tea and VIP access to the afterparties. VIP tickets are also extremely popular providing exclusive bars, loos and luxury seating overlooking the polo arena. Standard Sandpolo tickets still provide the level of service that most other events would class as VIP. The seating, beach food concessions, bars and all day and night entertainment amounts to a fantastic chic but relaxed event experience with something for everyone. Ty Temel and TML Events have recently teamed up with Sandpolo to run the event says ‘I am thrilled to be part of this unique venture. The location is priceless and the event format is sound. We have added some extra pizzazz this year that I know everyone will enjoy. Guests come along for many reasons whether it is the polo, the socialising, the parties, to see and/or be seen. Having been to the event for the last few years the one thing everyone has in common is that they all have a smile on their faces.’ Johnny Wheeler, the founder, is extremely grateful for the support Sandpolo receives from the
council, local residents and suppliers ‘it is a pleasure to work alongside the newly formed BCP Council. The events team are extremely helpful and see the value that we can bring to the area’. Generous sponsorship from established brands such as Sunseeker, Barclays Wealth, Audi and Oakley has ensured the quality of the event remains high and guests are treated to the highest level of service. Five Reasons to hunt for the Aurora this Autumn Here are five reasons why you should travel in autumn:
30 JUNE 2019
The Aurora Zone has been built on years of passion, scientific research, expert knowledge and first-hand experience, resulting in an unparalleled collection of Northern Lights holidays.

T
he magnificent Aurora Borealis is primarily associated with a snow-white Lapland in the depths of winter, but we’re going to share a little secret - the Northern Lights season actually starts much earlier. In fact, Aurora Travel Experts, The Aurora Zone, believe autumn is one of the best times to tick them off your bucket list!
1. NASA scientists found that the months around the autumn equinox are almost twice as likely as solstices to have geomagnetic disturbances, meaning greater Aurora-spotting chances. 2. Lapland’s lakes are yet to freeze over, which often means that you can see the Northern Lights reflected in the still, inky waters. Imagine witnessing a beautiful double Aurora! 3. Autumn leaf colour, known locally as “Ruska”, is a spectacular sight, painting the landscapes in deep earthy hues, making it a prime destination for leaf peeping! 4. Unsurprisingly, it’s pretty cold in the Arctic during winter. Autumn offers milder temperatures and is known for less ‘Aurora-obscuring’ cloud cover! 5. Autumn offers the opportunity to take part in a whole host of experiences from hiking, foraging for berries, and taking a local cookery course, to searching for the Aurora on horseback.

Stressbusting Surrey garden collaboration wins coveted silver-gilt medal at RHS Chelsea Flower Show
C
elebrating success at the UK’s most anticipated horticultural event of the year, the Silent Pool Gin Garden wins a prestigious silver-gilt medal at the Royal Horticultural Society’s world-famous Chelsea Flower Show 2019, where innovative design and horticultural expertise combine to showcase some of the country’s most exciting and inventive gardening feats. Blending the passion and expertise of David Neale of Neale Richards Garden Design and University of Surrey academics Professor Tony Myatt and Professor Richard Murphy, the Silent Pool Gin Garden takes inspiration from plant technologies and the greening of inner city spaces. Born from the vision to create a space that absorbs stress through scent, sound and sight, the garden also invites you to consider the making of gin, the inventive use of recycled materials and the power of plants to create energy. Many of the botanicals used in the making of gin are represented in the planting and symbolised by a single juniper bonsai tree given its own floating shelf on the garden wall, while a striking hanging seat gives a nod to the distillery’s copper stills. A Perspex teal water wall etched with Silent Pool’s signature botanicals forms part of the garden’s feature aqueduct. Director of the Centre for Environment and Sustainability Professor Richard Murphy said: “After

careful planning and exploring of new sustainable technologies, we are very excited to present our united efforts at RHS Chelsea Flower Show this week. “With the help of engineering students from SurreyEARS (the electronics and amateur radio student society), intricately installed sensors orchestrate Tony Myatt’s natural soundscape, triggering sounds of birds and insects in response to environmental changes in humidity, light, temperature and wind. This, coupled with live electricity generation from the plant microbial fuel cells, has been a brilliant way to engage, inform and intrigue visitors, encouraging an appreciation for plants and the significant role they can play in wellbeing and sustainability.” Ian McCulloch, Founder and Director of Silent Pool Distillers said: “By collaborating with NRGD and the University of Surrey, we were able to create a garden that truly engaged, informed and intrigued visitors in appreciating the critical role of plants to their own well-being, as well as the futures of others. This has been a truly exciting project and we are absolutely thrilled with the outcome.” Elements of the garden will now be donated to Silent Pool Distillers’ chosen charity, Cherry Trees, which provides home-from-home respite care for children and young adults with complex disabilities in East Clandon. www.silentpoolgin.com
The inspiration for the garden came after spending time in the Surrey Hills, a place of unrivalled tranquillity. We wanted to find a way of using plants and technology to allow everyone to enjoy that sense of calm, no matter their location.” – David Neale

Step into the most exciting school in England “We have had four children through the public school system and I think that Hurtwood House is the only one which has really delivered what it promised”
A
lthough it has all the facilities of a typical public school, Hurtwood House specialises exclusively in the sixth form and the age range 16-18. Changing schools at 16 opens up a whole new world of fresh experiences and challenges and provides the perfect steppingstone between school and university. Hurtwood House is young, exciting and dynamic and, most importantly of all, it is exceptionally creative with drama, media, art, textiles, dance, music and singing to die for. Famous former students include Oscar-winner Hans Zimmer (music for Gladiator, Rain Main, Lion King) and Golden Globe winner Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada, Gideon’s Daughter) and watch out for Hollywood hot-tip Jack Huston (Factory Girl). Zara Brownless (winner of the first Young Apprentice). But marvellous as the performing and creative arts are, this school is definitely not a one-trick pony. It also caters for the budding entrepreneur, doctor, lawyer, architect, etc etc etc with a range of subjects which, though less eyecatching, are no less successful and inspirational. Small wonder, then, that the world is beating a path to Hurtwood’s door, and one of the first things to strike visitors is that it has a completely different “campus” feel about it – not like school at all. That’s because there are no juniors – everybody here is 16+ and they all join after they have taken their GCSE’s. In many ways, it defies definition - more public school than sixth form college, but smaller and less institutional – more boutique than department store. At the moment it’s in a class of its own but one suspects that one day soon there will be more schools like this, because five years is a long time 44 JUNE 2019
to be in one public school, and so many boys and girls are now ready at 16 for a fresh challenge and a more stimulating life. A lot of parents agree wholeheartedly. As one satisfied customer puts it: “We have had four children through the public school system and I think that Hurtwood House is the only one which has really delivered what it promised.” Indeed, Hurtwood has a file of letters as thick as your arm from grateful parents, and clearly what they appreciate most is that Hurtwood has given their children the confidence to cope with anything in life and has fired up their enthusiasm. “Her mind was turned on,” says one, “and her appetite for learning is voracious. I want you to know that you lit the fuse.” Who could ask for anything more?

nspired by evidence that children are no longer using words like ‘dandelion’ and ‘kingfisher’, award-winning author Robert Macfarlane and illustrator Jackie Morris, have created The Lost Words. Gatton Park is supporting Lost Words for Surrey, a campaign to have a copy of the book in every primary school in the county. www.lostwordsforsurrey.co.uk
About The Lost Words In 2007 a well-known children’s dictionary, using established algorithms, found that children were no longer using words such as ‘acorn’, ‘conker’ and ‘otter’, instead words such as chatroom and blog were becoming increasingly popular. Reflecting this usage, and with a finite amount of space in the dictionary, these nature-based words were taken out to make space for those more commonly used words. Children were no longer talking about nature. By way of an answer to this, award winning author Robert Macfarlane and award winning author and illustrator Jackie Morris, got together to create a book celebrating these missing words. The book explores twenty words including ‘kingfisher’, ‘heather’ and ‘newt’, each word has its own magicalacrostic spell and beautiful illustration. The hope is that The Lost Words will recapture children’s imaginations and stir in them a love and appreciation of wild places, plants and animals. In a 2008 National Trust survey, only a third of 8-11 year olds could name a magpie, and in a paper published in Science magazine, a group of 11 year olds had 80% accuracy at identifying Pokemon

characters, and only 50% accuracy at identifying common species of British plants and animals. With evidence of an increasing disconnect between children and nature, it is more important than ever that they know and understand these words. If children do not feel connected to the natural world, they won’t feel concerned about it. If we can inspire a love of nature at a young age, it will last a lifetime! There have been several crowd-funding campaigns up and down the UK to raise enough money to get The Lost Words into schools. There is an illustrated map showing the areas where this has been successfully achieved. We would love to make Surrey part of this amazing movement. As well as the book, each school will receive a copy of ‘An Explorer’s Guide to the Lost Words’, a teaching resource which overlaps with the National Curriculum. Want to tighten your skin, reduce sagging, wrinkles and fine lines? Dr Peter Forrester now offers the option of combining Profhilo with INTRAcel, our proven and long-established radio-frequency microneedling treatment. Together they are an unbeatable combination. INTRAcel Dr Peter Forrester has been using INTRAcel skin rejuvenation for over 5 years. During this time he has witnessed the introduction of many other non-surgical skintightening treatments. Usually well publicised, celebrity endorsed and very expensive. They are promoted with before and after photographs showing results that are rarely achievable in practice. Dr Forrester continues to be impressed with the results of INTRAcel and believes that it offers a better and more cost effective result than most of the new ‘trendy’ techniques. INTRAcel cleverly combines the two established techniques of micro-needling and radio-frequency (RF) skin tightening. INTRAcel delivers short bursts of RF energy into the deeper layers of the skin. Recovery from an INTRAcel treatment is usually quick; at the end of the treatment the skin will be red like a sunburn sensation for a few hours, this will diminish after 1-2 days. A toned and tightened effect will be immediately noticeable after a treatment but the full effect will develop over the subsequent weeks. There will be improvement after the first treatment, however a course of 3 at 4-6 week intervals is recommended. Following this improvements will continue for up to 6 months as healthy collagen develops.
Profhilo
Profhilo is an exciting and unique rejuvenation product for the face, neck and décolletage, being unlike any other skin treatment on the market. Dr Peter Forrester always looks critically at new treatments and never jumps on the bandwagon of new treatments until he has had time to evaluate the

exaggerated claims made by some manufacturers and occasionally other practitioners. He has regularly used Profhilo since Summer 2017 and hence has had a good opportunity to evaluate its effects. He is now convinced Profhilo is a safe, effective and innovative product. Profhilo is designed to improve skin laxity, texture and lines by stimulating collagen and elastin production. This effect combined with increased
hydration will produce a subtle lifting and tightening effect. Although Profhilo is composed of Hyaluronic Acid (HA) it is not a filler and is aimed at achieving a very different effect from all the currently available HA fillers such as Restylane, Juvederm or Belotero. It will not add excessive volume and hence there is no risk that a Profhilo treatment will result in an obviously filled or ‘pillow face’ look. It is manufactured by IBSA, a long-established and highly reputable Swiss company and was first launched in Italy in 2015 and subsequently in the UK in January 2016. Since launch there have been an increasing number of positive reviews and opinions in the media. A Profhilo treatment is quick and easy. Just 5 small injections of Profhilo are administered to each side of the face. Discomfort is minimal and other than the possibility for a small bruise there is no downtime. There will be an initial increase in hydration, but the main effects will build over the following weeks. A second treatment must be given 4 weeks later to maximise the beneficial effects.

The joy of a cast iron bath
Bathroom retailer Aston Matthews shares top tips on choosing the best cast iron bath for your home
“If the bath is to be centrally located you will also need to talk to your plumber about routing the waste and the hot and cold water pipes under the floor”
A
cast iron bath makes a handsome focal point in your bathroom and these generously proportioned tubs invite you to lie back and enjoy a long, relaxing soak. Perennially popular since they first appeared in Victorian bathrooms, investing in a cast iron bath will give you many years of enjoyment and add value to your property. There are two main styles to choose from: floor mounted, such as our popular Brunel bath, or on ornate or claw feet such as our Rimini design. Twin ended cast iron baths tend to be generously proportioned measuring up to 1780mm long. However, if space is limited, we also offer Verona, a reduced length roll top measuring just 1540mm in length. All Aston Matthews cast iron baths are supplied with a high-quality white enamel interior and a smoothed and primed exterior allowing you to paint the bath at home to match your décor.
Quality assured Aston Matthews stocks the largest collection of new 84 JUNE 2019
Clockwise from top: Rimini cast iron bath on claw feet; Brunel cast iron bath from Aston Matthews; The traditional Slipper bath
cast iron baths in the UK. When you buy your cast iron bath from us you are investing in the highest quality product at the best possible price and all models are usually in stock for immediate delivery Unfortunately, not all cast iron baths on the market are of the same quality. There are many cheap imports available which do not have the same smoothed and primed exterior and have an inferior enamel which will scratch and stain with use.
Before you buy If you are positioning your bath as a freestanding focal point in the middle of the bathroom it may help to map out the space it will occupy using sheets of newspaper. This will help you visualise the impact it will have in the room and ensure there is sufficient space to move around the bath. If the bath is to be centrally located you will also need to talk to your plumber about routing the waste and the hot and cold water pipes under the floor. And finally, make sure you can physically get the bath into your house or flat by checking the width and height of the doors and the stairs.
Dispelling the myths It is sometimes implied that cast iron baths are not suitable for older houses. In Victorian times all baths were cast iron as it was the only material available and there is no record of one of these baths ever having fallen through the floor. It is a myth that the floor in the bathroom needs to be reinforced to accommodate a cast iron bath. A bath full of water and a bather is only the equivalent weight to four people. If you are happy for four people to stand in your bathroom without worrying that they will crash through the floor to the room below, then you can have a cast iron bath. Cast iron baths have a high-quality enamel interior which is far more resistant to scratching and staining than any acrylic or composite bath. You can view a wide range of cast iron baths at Aston Matthews’ Guildford showroom tel: 01483 478826 or astonmatthews.co.uk

hoosing the right tiles for your bathroom needs some careful consideration. With so many varieties on the market, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by the choice on offer. Choose from ceramic, slate, glass and metal tiles, plain or patterned, large and small, smooth or textured. The options are seemingly endless. So, to help you through the decision process, we’ve put together some practical tips, making finding the perfect tiles for you bathroom, a breeze
CERAMIC OR NATURAL STONE TILES? Ceramic tiles are the most popular by a long way. They’re durable, their glazed surface makes them highly resistant to harbouring germs, they’re usually very easy to keep clean, and come in styles to suit every taste. If you opt for ceramics, the most important thing to be aware of is that they do tend to vary from lot to lot, so make sure all the boxes you buy are stamped with the same lot number. But if you’d rather try something different... Glazed terracotta tiles are hugely popular right now with the trend for Mediterranean style bathrooms. Good quality terracotta is not only gorgeously rustic, it’ll last virtually forever, but can be hard to find. So the cheapest option might not be the best. Natural stone tiles like granite, slate, marble and even terrazzo (composed of marble chips imbedded in concrete and polished smooth) are beautiful, distinctive, and luxurious. They’ll cost you though. And these materials tend to be porous, so you may need to apply a seal to stop the tiles absorbing water. Make sure you discuss this with the supplier before you buy. Glass, metal, and porcelain tiles look brilliant if installed properly – but that’s easier said than done. Unless you’re really a dab hand at DIY you might want to leave the fitting of these to the experts.
ADD TEXTURE AND INTEREST WITH BATHROOM TILES With the majority of bathroom suites being sleek and white, tiles are a great way to add texture and
interest into a room that can otherwise, look fairly clinical. If you’re talking floor tiles, texture is a must. It sounds like common sense, but many buyers are still seduced by lovely shiny tiles and then end up skidding all over the place every time the floor’s wet. Generally, the rougher the texture, the less slippery the tile when wet. When it comes to wall tiles, shiny tiles look chic and sleek and reflect light, making them a good option when in small or dark spaces. On the other hand, embossed tiles can be a smart way of adding interest to your walls and reducing starkness, especially if your tiles are in only one or two colours.
CONSIDER COLOURFUL OR PATTERNED BATHROOM TILES It goes without saying that white is by far the most popular colour choice for bathroom tiles. White tiles are fresh-looking, classic, and reflect light to give the illusion of a more spacious, lighter room. If you’re worried about the room looking too stark add dark or patterned towels and other accessories to introduce splashes of colour while retaining the clean minimalist look. Colourful or patterned tiles can be used to add detail here and there, or make a bold statement when used to cover the entire wall. They tend to look best contrasted with simpler bathroom fixtures.
SMALLER BATHROOMS LOOK BETTER WITH SMALLER TILES Generally, the more compact the bathroom the smaller the tiles should be, especially if there’s not much space between your sink, toilet, and tub. Smaller tiles will also require less cutting to fit around objects and make for a more flowing feel. If you’re lucky enough to have a big bathroom, large tiles give a sleek look with less exposed grouting in between. Borders or panels of smaller tiles can look fantastic in complimentary or contrasting colours.
Colourful Crackle Tiles Introducing the Craquelure Collection
W
alls and Floors have just released their colourful Craquelure Collection. It’s a selection of brick shaped ceramic wall tiles with a characterful crackled glaze, which gives a wonderful vintage appearance. The collection consists of 7 colours - ranging from cool whites and greys through to pinks and blues. There’s even a Living Coral Tile, which fits in with Pantone’s Colour of the Year 2019. The tiles have a glossy finish, which really highlights the crackling. The brick shaped design of these tiles opens them up to a variety of layouts. They can be used in a traditional brickbond format, stacked in straight linear columns, arranged in a herringbone pattern, or ‘boxed’ which is where two tiles are fixed vertically beside two that are fixed horizontally. As always, full size samples of any of the Craquelure Tiles can be ordered online with Free Delivery. The cost of the sample tiles will be refunded if a full order over £99 is later placed. Walls and Floors is the UK’s largest independent tile retailer. The company, which was established in 1987, delivers nationwide with Free Delivery over £99. With 3,600 tiles, they have the largest online tile selection in the UK. They offer full size refundable sample tiles and have 0% finance options available. The company’s latest campaign, ‘Unlock Your Dream Home,’ is all about introducing homeowners to the idea that tiles are no longer limited to the kitchen or bathroom. With designs that cover all the latest decor trends including marbles, wood effects, natural stones, stone effects, marbles, patterns, metallics, and hexagons - tiles can be used throughout the home and garden. www.wallsandfloors.co.uk JUNE 2019 89

Brighten up your bathroom
Create a tropical paradise Following on from one of last year’s key interior trends, we’re set to continue welcoming an oasis of plants into our homes. However, for those of us who do not withhold green fingers, this isn’t a trend we’ve all been able to embrace, until now. So far, 2019 has seen the introduction of bold, leafy prints into interior décor and, thanks to Original Style’s Eden range, homeowners are now able to bring nature into bathrooms through the use of tiles. Original Style’s Eden range contains a variety of lush and leafy designs for a tropical paradise, from the soft and delicate Pergola, through to the more dramatic Hothouse and Glade. Pergola displays trailing fronds, Hothouse is a riot of palm leaves and Glade is a delicate bouquet of ferns. Designed and printed in-house at Original Style’s production site in Exeter, Devon; Eden’s designs provide a sensation of calm and are the epitome of the botanical trend. These tiles also feature a large format (600 x 300mm) to provide an almost seamless look for an appearance that mimics wallpaper but with all the advantages of tile. www.originalstyle.com 90 JUNE 2019

Be bold with a variety of bathroom wall lights from Besselink & Jones. Sometimes ceiling lights don’t give off the light that is desired in a bathroom, so adding wall lights not only makes for a brighter bathroom, it also adds a touch of sophisticated style. Brass lamps are vivid and luxurious which will make your bathroom radiant. With brass and gold being a traditional trend, this movement has carried on into the interior world today because of the sense of warmth it brings to any living space. Opt for the Large Horizontal Bathroom Light with Pineapple Finials or the Swivel Bathroom Light in Distressed Brass to achieve this glossy glow-up. For a more subtle and modern look, choose the Double Swivel Bathroom Light in Brushed Nickel or the Double Curved Arm Bathroom Light in Polished Chrome. Adding these subtle beams will complete this look with a glistening finish. www.besselink.com

Relax, and let Bridgman take the hard work
R
ecent trends have seen us viewing the garden as an extra room of the home, ripe for relaxing and entertaining opportunities – as such, we now expect the same level of comfort and sociability as we would in a lounge or a dining area, and if we can also wow our friends with a statement piece at the same time, then even better! Instant inspiration for your perfect garden oasis can be found at our Walton on Thames Showroom, where you are able to browse not just our luxury garden furniture, but also bespoke interior furniture and distinguished accessories for both the home and garden. As a family-run luxury furniture specialist with over 40 years of experience, Bridgman place distinct emphasis on quality, style and durability, meaning that you can trust us for reliable, luxurious comfort both indoors and out. And it is this level of trust that brings customers to us time and time again to discuss their own plans for a patio paradise and help make them a reality, choosing from an unparalleled selection of dining and lounging furniture. Frequently we find ourselves being asked for outdoor furniture that not only offers comfort, but also practicality, and something that is eye-catching and on-trend – being used as a focal point for sociable gatherings with friends and family as well as offering a ‘social-media moment’ that can be shared and fondly recalled with just a few swipes – and with that in mind we are happy to offer helpful advice and attractive entertaining solutions. In addition to traditional Dining Sets available in all weather materials such as Rattan, Teak, Resin and Aluminium, Bridgman have noted a rising demand for a far more casual approach to spending time in the garden when the sun decides to shine, and now offer not just Lounge Armchairs and Sofas with matching Coffee Tables, but also versatile modular seating options across 8 collections in a variety of colours, shapes and styles. The ever-popular L-shaped sofa is great for chatting or selfishly lounging, can be extended as far as your space allows, or transformed into an intimate (or even an expansive) U-shape encouraging conversation as guests sit across from each other. We often find that these modular sofa sets with straight edges work well when tucked away into cosy corners, or look spectacular when brought into open spaces to dramatically divide an area. One concern that customers often come to us with is how best to look after garden furniture when rain is inevitably forecast, thankfully with our exclusive fully waterproof and virtually stainproof cushions, socialising in the sun can remain carefree with the peace of mind that spills won’t be a problem, and unexpected downpours that are typical of English Summers need not be a worry either! The low-maintenance furniture materials we use have also been expertly designed and rigorously tested, so that we know it will withstand the best and worst natural elements and still look great year

after year. In what is a new and exciting venture for Bridgman, we are extremely proud to be working in collaboration with the National Trust to deliver a new garden furniture collection for 2019, suitable for the most discerning customer. Taking inspiration from the many breath-taking locales the National Trust has to offer, we worked together to design and craft a stunning modular collection that recalls both the circular arched windows of Cliveden House in Buckinghamshire, and the shape and the flow of the impressive maze formed from over 1000 yew trees that sits within the glorious gardens overlooking the River Thames. Utilising our long heritage of producing quality furniture and featuring our exclusive fully waterproof cushion technology, the Cliveden Modular Collection heralds another landmark in Bridgman’s proud history, as we become the sole manufacturer producing garden furniture that bears the National Trust name. Ongoing fundraising and conservation are an important part of the work the National Trust carries out for over 500 special places enjoyed by members and the public alike, and through the sale of products in the Cliveden Collection, this year alone we will donate a minimum of £15,000 to the National Trust charity to ensure their essential conservation work continues. And in what is shaping up to be a very exciting year for us, we have recently begun work on a plan to move our existing Walton on Thames showroom to brand new premises – and although it is still early days yet, there are a handful of details that we can reveal to you, such as where we are moving to. Those of you that are already familiar with our Showroom on New Zealand Avenue won’t have to look very far, as we are literally moving across the road – to a much larger premises where we will be able to display even more of our exquisite furniture, offering an even greater hands-on selection for our distinguished customers. Since we hold impressive stock levels in the UK,

Outdoor Living Inspiration For Every Home
A
s the temperatures start to climb, the hottest venue in town is just a couple of feet away. So whether it’s a patio, courtyard or rolling paddock, it’s time to start cultivating your Eden. Ranging from lush urban terraces to stunning alfresco kitchens, we’ve rounded up the finest outdoor rooms to reveal how you can get the most out of your space this season.
Inner City Edens For apartment dwellers, that small balcony or rooftop courtyard is your very own inner-city escape. Make the most of it this year with smart foldable furniture and plenty of designer planters. For those short on space, Ligne Roset’s Backpack or Moroso’s Banjooli collections provide a colourful injection of life. A little lighting can also go a long way with Contardi’s Muse Outdoor Lantern as the ultimate day-to-night lighting solution.
Sun Seekers With the Met Office predicting a scorching summer ahead, give crowded parks a pass and recline in style with your very own sun lounger. For lovers of Danish design, we recommend taking a look at Carl Hansen & Son’s BK14 Sunbed that can be transformed into a stunning indoor bench for use during the cooler months. Meanwhile, Bauhaus buffs will delight in Gandia Blasco’s new Timeless Chaise Lounge, a distinctive lounger inspired by the architectural language of one of the 20th century’s most influential design movements.
Alfresco Dining For many people, there’s nothing more romantic than a meal in the open air. Our outdoor dining collections are here to help you rediscover that pleasure with an array of practical yet stylish solutions. From booster grills that heat up fully in just six minutes to stunning indoor/outdoor design, alfresco living shouldn’t be just for summer. We recommend kicking things off with a classic teak dining set from Gandia or Gloster before creating your own personalised kitchen with Röshults. All smooth lines and Scandinavian rhythms, they bring barbecues into the 21st century with full grill 110 JUNE 2019
control and fuss-free cleaning. The only thing you need to worry about is the topping up the drinks.
Delightful Decking No matter where you are in your home, comfort should always be the first priority. In 2019, we’re taking a gentler approach and inviting poufs, sofas and rugs out onto the decking. Stunning natural fibres and weaves will have a welcome softening effect (see B&B Italia’s Ray Natural Collection) while complementary teak dining or lounge sets will emphasize the richness of wood. For those looking for something a little softer still, Paola Lenti’s collection of high-tech woven chairs are an ideal starting point.
Luminous Landscapes Lighting is one of the important aspects for an enchanting outdoor space, yet it’s often overlooked. This summer, search for lanterns, pendants and illuminated planters — all of which will help transition a summer garden party into a sophisticated evening soiree. Ones to watch include Pablo Lighting’s UMA Bluetooth Sound Lantern (8 hours of high fidelity sound paired with warm-dim light technology) and Foscarini’s new Twiggy Grid Outdoor Collection. At Chaplins, we believe in alfresco living all year long. All it takes is a little bit of design thinking. Visit us online or in-store this summer to discover Europe’s finest luxury brands all under one roof.

are closer than you’d think T he magic of a Neville Johnson interior is that it is truly bespoke. Whether you’re thinking about a home office, bedroom, library or even a staircase renovation everything is impeccably designed to fit your space and suit your lifestyle. Homes with character often have quirky alcoves, sloping ceilings, twists, turns or oddly-shaped ante-rooms that can frustrate their otherwise proud owners. Conversely, many homes use spare bedrooms or dining rooms as studies or places where essential paperwork or ‘stuff ’ is stored out of sight. Neville Johnson are masters of creating ‘amazing’ out of seemingly impossible spaces and a fabulous example of just what can be achieved can be seen inside their Guildford showroom. The under stairs study in Bardolino Oak with arctic white painted casings and cabinetry is simply stunning. It’s based around a client’s request for a home study under the stairs. The staircase itself is a Neville Johnson renovation in solid oak with glass panels. It’s a breath-taking piece of architecture with characterful turns – no problem for the skilled craftsmen who use expert techniques to achieve a millimetre perfect fit. Using redundant space under the stairs frees other parts of the home from paperwork, clutter and technology, meaning more space for family life. Alcoves were re-invented as bespoke bookshelves and display centres for prized possessions. A curved desk on two levels was designed to mirror the flow of the staircase and it was positioned to give the owner maximum room to move around. The combination of Bardolino Oak and arctic white maximises a sense of space in the room. When you think about it, it makes sense to make the most of every inch of your home, and as Neville Johnson’s clients have discovered to their personal delight, it could bring some surprising benefits: You can work from home more easily. You can avoid the commute or catch-up on work emails in a dedicated space, keeping the rest of your home free for relaxation. It’s a great way to declutter your home. With extra shelves and cupboards you gain more storage giving your personal and professional paperwork a hiding place and it’s somewhere to keep everyday

items you don’t want to have on show. Display areas are a beautiful way to transform ‘dead spaces’ into works of art. Under stairs spaces can become real conversation starters and seeing your beautiful pieces on display will reinforce your sense of well-being. The study is a stunning feature. If you were to commission your own stunning home study such as this one, you can choose from a selection of over 70 exclusive paint colours each of which can be combined with a selection of high quality timber finishes to complement your existing decor. If you’re looking for a little design inspiration, why not pay a visit to Neville Johnson’s inspirational showroom at 242 High Street, Guildford.
