Colorado Rockies from where the CBD is sourced, it’s a sublimely complex gin suffused with natural therapeutic properties to deliver a deeply enjoyable sense of balance, calm and wellbeing with every sip. The premium quality CBD oil used in Colorado High is sourced from hemp grown in the clean air and rich, fertile soil of the Rockies in Colorado, USA. The altitude in Colorado is about a mile higher than sea level, which is why the state’s capital Denver, has earned the moniker the Mile High City. This altitude combined with the sunny climate and water from the mountains, creates the perfect growing conditions for Hemp which is why it is classed as the best in the world! Managing Director, Ian McCulloch, said “We set out to create a CBD gin without compromise that goes above and beyond in terms of user experience and benefit. That’s why each bottle contains a generous 200mg of the finest quality Coloradan CBD - sufficient to produce a noticeable therapeutic effect with every serve. This sets it apart from other CBD spirits that typically include a much lower, and thus far less effective, quantity. Our expert distillers have capitalised on the citrus notes of CBD, which are similar to grapefruit, to handcraft a truly refreshing and delicious gin”. The high concentration of CBD is evidenced in the liquid’s cloudy appearance. As a result, just one double measure in a G&T is sufficient to deliver the ultimate chill-out gin drinking experience. To serve: Combine 50ml Silent Pool Colorado High Gin, 200ml Indian Fever-Tree Tonic and ice, and garnish with a slice of grapefruit. Or, THE SURREY SOUTHSIDE Shake together a double measure of Colorado High CBD Gin with 25ml freshly squeezed lime juice, 7 fresh mint leaves and 15ml sugar cane syrup. HOW DOES CBD WORK? Hemp is a type of cannabis plant and it is brimming with CBD, also known as Cannabidiol. Our bodies also produce cannabinoids as a result of our natural endo-cannabinoid system (ECS), a network of chemicals and receptors that influence and maintain our general health and wellbeing. This includes the body’s pain responses, mood, appetite, sleep, recovery from inflammation and exertion, energy levels and much more. The ECS seems to exist solely for the purpose of helping the body’s various systems achieve homeostasis: that is, optimal balance and performance. Cannabinoids like CBD bind to the endocannabinoid receptors, activating and promoting their effects upon the body and effectively encouraging your ECS to promote, support and maintain a multitude of functions that have a tangible impact upon our wellbeing. In short, CBD can promote better sleep, balanced emotions, a sense of calm, and ultimate relaxation.
WILL IT MAKE ME HIGH? Both hemp and marijuana are cannabis plants. Marijuana is rich in THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the psychoactive compound known for getting the user ‘high’. Hemp contains cannabidiol which does not affect the user cognitively in any way but does offer many other benefits including a deep sense of relaxation and well being. Our CBD is completely free of THC - so it cannot make you high, but it can make you feel very, very good indeed. Due to the high concentration of CBD in each bottle, separation may occur. For this reason we recommend giving the bottle a good shake before serving.

ART FOR ALL SEASON AT WATTS GALLERY – ARTISTS’ VILLAGE Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village (WGAV) has launched a series of activities to celebrate its Art for All Community learning programme.
I
nspired by the charity’s founders – the great Victorian artist George Frederic Watts OM RA (1817-1904) and his wife, the artist and designer Mary Watts (1849 -1938) – who believed that access to art could improve people’s lives, the Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village Art for All Community learning programme delivers artist-led workshops to socially excluded and vulnerable groups, enabling the development of new and transferable skills in order to build self-confidence and contribute to rehabilitation. The Art for All Community learning programme is ordinarily celebrated with an annual exhibition, through which participants are able to sell their work. As Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village is currently closed in response to the Government’s guidance on COVID-19, this year the celebration moves online and includes: • A showcase of artwork created by Art for All Community participants over the past year, with an opportunity to hear from some of the participants who have taken part. Through artistled workshops, Watts Gallery Trust creates access to the transformative powers of art for diverse groups, including women prisoners, young offenders, young people with a learning disability and families living in challenging circumstances; • The launch of The Limner Collection, a brand new range of products featuring designs by Art for All Community participants available to buy through the Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village online shop. Taking its name from Limnerslease, the artists’ house, all profits raised through the sale of Limner Collection pieces will go back to the participants and will help towards the on-going costs of delivering the Art for All Community

learning programme*; • A series of online workshops and activities inspired by the Art for All Community learning programme and available for everyone at home to enjoy. Although the Artists’ Village is currently closed, the Art for All Community learning programme has been continuing remotely, through virtual workshops and the provision of artists’ materials to enable participation. Taking the art and ideas of GF and Mary Watts as its starting point, over recent weeks the programme has explored GF Watts’s iconic painting Hope (1886) as an enduring source of inspiration, with participants creating their own responses to what hope means at the current time. Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village closed its doors temporarily on 19 March in response to the developing situation with Coronavirus (COVID-19) and public health guidance. The loss of income from visitor admissions, group tours, the shop, Tea Shop, commercial gallery and events as a result of this closure is anticipated to result in a deficit of at least £300,000 this year. The charity has launched a fundraising appeal, Hope 2020, and is seeking support: www.wattsgallery.org.uk/hope2020 The Art for All season is available at www.wattsgallery.org.uk and can be followed through the Trust’s social media channels: @WattsGallery facebook/thewattsgallery Once reopened, prints, paintings and ceramics made by Art for All Community learning programme participants will be displayed at Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village in a series of spotlight displays over the coming year.

Raphael: Prince Albert’s Passion 3 October 2020 – 31 January 2021 2020 marked the 500th anniversary of the death of Raphael and to commemorate this significant event, exhibitions were scheduled around the world to celebrate Raphael’s achievement as one of the greatest artists of the Italian Renaissance. The Lightbox is the only gallery in the UK to be mounting an exhibition about Raphael in 2020. Originally due to open in May 2020, the upcoming exhibition has been rescheduled (3 October 2020 – 31 January 2021) thanks to the kind discretion of the lenders. The exhibition relays the fascinating story of Prince Albert’s passion for Raphael and his creation of the Raphael Collection at Windsor Castle. It reveals how Raphael caught the imagination of the Prince Consort, who embarked on a pioneering research-based project into the work of the Renaissance master, making copies of his work using the newest technologies available. The exhibition explores the making of copies after Raphael and reveals 500 years of reproductive techniques, not only in photography, but also in a

variety of mediums including engravings, original wood-block printing, and lithography. The Prince Consort’s Raphael Collection, started in 1853, includes over 5,000 prints and photographs, recording almost every work by Raphael. The Prince began to assemble all available reproductions of Raphael’s work, and he and his wife, Queen Victoria, spent many happy hours together in the Print Room at Windsor Castle occupied by this task. The exhibition also shows how Queen Victoria and Prince Albert’s own personal art collection reflected their shared, intense interest in Raphael. Included in the show are several of the Raphael-inspired artworks the couple purchased or commissioned and gifted to each other as either birthday or Christmas presents. The Raphael drawings in the Royal Collection are at the heart of the exhibition and several of them will be shown in a specially designed space. Most of the drawings included in the display were made in preparation for major commissions, but they are important as individual works of art and reveal the artist’s working methods. Prince Albert was also inspired by the Raphael cartoons in the Royal Collection and like the drawings, had them photographed. The exhibition includes a rare 17th century tapestry version of one of the cartoons, made at the Mortlake tapestry works under the patronage of Charles II, whose father, Charles I, had originally brought the Raphael cartoons to England. Raphael: Prince Albert’s Passion will be on show at The Lightbox in Woking, Surrey, from 3 October 2020 – 31 January 2021. The exhibition will be accompanied by a selection of engaging talks, tours, and creative workshops. For further information please visit thelightbox.org.uk.

Monaco Yacht Show 2020 A Superyacht Industry Support Show. September 23 – 26, 2020, Port Hercule, Monaco
T
he Principality of Monaco and Informa have announced a secure, not-for-profit event in 2020 They have confirmed they are working together to deliver an intimate, not-for-profit Monaco Yacht Show in Port Hercule in September 2020, with full details to be announced in the coming weeks. The proposed event will employ the highest standards of hygiene and cleanliness and be dedicated to supporting the speedy recovery of the industry post COVID-19, providing an invaluable platform for designers, brokers, shipyards and other key players within the yachting industry to connect with their customers and share ideas in a safe environment.
Return & Recovery post the COVID-19 Pandemic Like most industries, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a marked impact on the international yachting community, with many businesses temporarily closed and staff furloughed, and the usual annual cycle of industry activity severely disrupted. As countries and locations around the world gradually relax lockdown restrictions and ease control measures, it is imperative that the superyacht community is supported in every way possible to help the industry return and recover safely and quickly.
The 30th Monaco Yacht Show in September 2020 With this in mind, The Monaco Yacht Show has been working closely with the Principality of Monaco to determine how best to support the industry in 2020. This year’s Monaco Yacht Show is scheduled from 23 to 26 September. With control measures steadily being relaxed in Monaco, around Europe and internationally, on current course and speed, this should allow for a carefully staged event to still take place this year. Therefore, it is our intention to retain these dates for the 2020 Monaco Yacht Show and work with
2 6 J U LY 2 0 2 0
suppliers and local authorities over the coming weeks to confirm full details of the event. In the spirit of the history and position of the event within the superyacht industry, the 30th Monaco Yacht Show will be run on a not-for-profit basis, recognizing the challenges facing everyone post the COVID-19 pandemic and, therefore, providing direct support to all attendees and exhibitors from across the market. Whilst the intimate nature of the 2020 event will prioritize the safety of participants, both Informa and the Monaco Principality are committed to ensuring the quality of the event and show experience is maintained for everyone. Charlie McCurdy, Chief Executive, Informa Markets (organiser of the Monaco Yacht Show) said, “The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on all industries, not least the international yachting community. As we move to the other side of the pandemic, all parts of the industry need to work collaboratively to ensure a speedy return and recovery. We are playing our part by hosting a notfor-profit Monaco Yacht Show in 2020, providing an opportunity for the community to come together, share ideas, meet with customers and start to rebuild positive momentum.” www.monacoyachtshow.com

WEST HORSLEY PLACE JOINS THE GLADRAGS PROJECT W
est Horsley Place is inviting members of the local community to help create an artwork that explores ‘what makes us glad right now’. Devised by local artist Diana Burch in response to the coronavirus pandemic, the GladRags project asks local residents – including children - to create a small patchwork square that captures ‘what makes you feel glad’. Everyone is invited to take part, making use of what can be found at home, from rags to remnants. Once the current lockdown has been lifted, these patchwork squares will be collected by West Horsley Place and will be brought together to make a large artwork that will be a record of how the local community came through this extraordinary time. Launched in Haslemere in partnership with Haslemere Museum, the GladRags project is now being rolled out across the county. West Horsley Place is delighted to be helping residents of Guildford and the surrounding area to take part. Commenting, Diana Burch said: “Coronavirus is a huge event in human history. The GladRags project wants to step in as history is made and provide a community record of how we came through isolation and learned to value the little things, the things that make us glad right now.” “Creativity is a wonderful way to relax, focus and build self-esteem – and is very much needed at the current time. Every square will be welcomed – regardless of classic needlework skills!” “I want to thank the cultural hubs and museums
2 8 J U LY 2 0 2 0
that are enabling this project to take place. When this is all over, we can all get together to celebrate creativity and community spirit once more.” Clare Clinton, Operations Manager at West Horsley Place, adds: “We are delighted to be taking part in the GladRags project with our local community. By reflecting on what makes us glad despite this difficult time we will create a patchwork that will be a celebration of our community’s resilience.”
“Our charity remains committed to creating here a welcoming space for the community to share and enjoy with arts, culture, community, history and nature at its heart” “We were so looking forward to opening the doors of West Horsley Place this spring. Although this has been delayed as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, our charity remains committed to creating here a welcoming space for the community to share and enjoy with arts, culture, community, history and nature at its heart.” “Until we can be together, we look forward to seeing pictures of your wonderful patchworks which we will share for everyone to enjoy.”
How to Take Part This is for everyone. All ages and all abilities. Participants are asked to create a 15cm square, with a small extra allowance for a border so that the patchworks can be stitched together, using any material available. This might be a remnant, an odd sock – or a rag. Decorate the square to reflect WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL GLAD using thread, glue, buttons and bits and bobs accessible at this time. For participants who would like to share their patchworks now, please email a photograph to info@westhorsleyplace.org Photos will be shared on the West Horsley Place website and through the charity’s social media channels. Exclusive gin from Painshill Historic landscaped gardens Painshill in Cobham is offering ginthusiasts a very special tipple.
P
ainshill Kitchen Garden Gin is a small batch bottle – only 300 ever made – that uses botanicals all grown at the park and distilled locally at the Gin Kitchen in Dorking. The gin is described as being a refreshing mix of lemon balm, lovage and a hint of shredded rhubarb and is available for delivery by volunteers within certain postcodes around Kingston upon Thames and Guildford. The 158-acre Painshill has been closed for last few months due to the pandemic and it is hoped that sales of the gin will help the independently-run park and gardens to survive.
“It is hoped that sales of the gin will help the independently-run park and gardens to survive” One of the finest of its kind in the world, Painshill was developed by the Honourable Charles Hamilton and is filled with fantastic follies – where you’d least expect them. The remarkable replicas include a sparkling crystal grotto on an island in the lake, a Roman temple, a gothic tower, a quaint thatched hermitage – and even an exotic Turkish tent. Painshill Director Paul Griffiths said: “Our Kitchen Garden gin is very special and ideal for those gin lovers who like to try the smaller3 4 J U LY 2 0 2 0
batch bottles. “We need the support of the public more than ever during this difficult time and hope that people will buy our gin to help us survive being closed for so long. “We hope that we will soon be open again for people to come and enjoy our beautiful grounds – socially-distanced of course.” Painshill Kitchen Garden gin costs £45 and because it hand delivered by volunteers is only available for delivery at the following postcodes: KT8-15, KT19, 23 and 24 and GU22 and 23.

LOCAL AWARD WINNERS British furniture and homeware brand Loaf win ‘store of the year – small format’ in the Retail Week Awards 2020 or their Guildford Showroom
L
oaf ’s Guildford Shack has been crowned Best Small Store of the Year at the prestigious Retail Week Awards 2020 beating Matalan, Tile Giant, Pandora and the Co-op. The Loaf Guildford team accepting their award Opened in March 2018, the Guildford Shack was the Brit-brand’s fourth showroom and was their first space outside of London. Situated in the Tunsgate Quarter, Guildford’s brilliant shopping destination right in the heart of the high street, the 5,000 square foot emporium has all the essentials for laid-back living. Loafers can take five in the mattress testing area, sit back on squishy sofas and ogle their loafingly lovely wares. As well as retro arcade games, a colouring station and a football table, there is also an old school-style ice cream parlour for big and little Loafers to enjoy. Loaf ’s Shack model is based on the brand’s laid-back culture. The Loaf team pride themselves on delivering outstanding customer experience and avoiding hard sell tactics. To see them perform so well on in-store sales is a real testament to the brilliant relationships that the Loafers build with customers who could otherwise easily order online. Judges praised the Guildford Shack’s innovation as a small space furniture retailer, saying “They are also proof that ‘online to physical’ can be done well. It’s not an easy thing to do, because you are not necessarily a good physical retailer if you are a good online retailer. Loaf is a good role model in this space because they have displayed fabulous human customer service.” They went on to say “Loaf really think about their customer journey – for example they offer ice cream to kids. They’ve thought about their customers and know them well, they realise that customers will stay there for a while if their kids are happy. It’s very simple but it can make all the difference.” Founded in 2008, Loaf has been one of the UK’s fastest growing furniture companies, reaching a turnover of £48m in 2018/2019, and qualifying for the ‘Virgin Fast Track 100’ four years in a row. Despite challenging economic headwinds Loaf continues to deliver strong growth and is on track to see a double digit rise in profits when their financial year comes to a close in March 2020.

AVOIDing bronzer mistakes
Make-up artists share their top tips for a naturally sun-kissed look. Katie Wright gets her glow on.
W
ith holidays to sunny, farflung destinations pretty much impossible right now, if you want a tan this summer, the old ‘fake it till you make it’ adage is more relevant than ever. Bronzer is the easiest option if you want to get a gorgeous glow in no time, but it’s still possible to go 4 4 J U LY 2 0 2 0
overboard, pick the wrong shade or end up with uneven patches. That’s why we’ve enlisted a pair of pro make-up artists to school us on how to create a subtle, sun-kissed look with either cream or powder formulas. Here are five common mistakes - and how to avoid them, plus our pick of the best bronzing products.
1. Not prepping skin properly “Skincare is a tool to make your skin beautiful and healthy and glowing,” says Julia Carta, celebrity make-up artist on behalf of Cetraben. “Using skincare the right way, you’re going to get a beautiful canvas.” She recommends moisturising with Cetraben Natural Oatmeal Moisturising Cream (£6.99 - was £8.99, Boots), which will create a smooth, hydrated base, whether you’re using cream or powder bronzer.
2. Choosing the wrong shade “Making sure you get the right bronzer for your skin tone is so important, because getting the wrong one can either make you look orange, ashy or like there’s no make-up on you,” says Bobbi Brown make-up artist Zara Findlay. How do you find the perfect shade? “Your bronzer should be the same undertone as your skin - cool, warm, olive, or neutral - and should be the natural colour your skin tans,” Findlay says. “The easiest way to see if it is the perfect colour for you, is to place the bronzer against your chest and see if the bronzer lifts and compliments your skin tone.”
“Making sure you get the right bronzer for your skin tone is so important”
3. Incorrect placement “After you prep properly, then you can start to look where your placement goes,” says Carta. “With bronzer, it’s across the cheekbones and across the bridge of the nose where the sun would hit you naturally.” You can also use matte bronzer to gently contour your face. “So if you’ve got a wide face, you want to slim it down by putting bronzer in certain areas,” Carta says. “Use the same placements that you would do with contouring technique, which is a ‘C’ shape around the temples.”
4. Only using one type of bronzer Bronzers usually fall into one of two camps: matte or shimmer. Carta recommends combining the two to create a three-dimensional look. “Use the matte where you put your contouring powder, then where you want your highlights, use the the shimmery one. “That’s a clever way of doing it - it’s what I do a lot when I’m working on celebrities, because it gives them that beautiful subtle glow.”
5. Forgetting your neck The cheekbones are the most important area for bronzer, but it’s important to finish off with a light dusting of colour over the rest of the face to even out your skin tone. “Always bring the bronzer down to your neck you don’t want to look like two separate people!” Carta warns. “To define the jawline and get rid of a double chin, you should blend it in - and don’t forget your ears as well.”

If you’re struggling to nail a satisfactory haircare regime at home, use complementary products from the same range, rather than adopting a mix and match approach. It’s vital to use the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair type, if you’re unsure as to what you should be using, then ask a professional. – Sarah Biss, Salon Manager Esher When blow-drying always use a heat protector. Apply to towel dried hair before you blast away. My salon picks are Kerastase Genesis Defense Thermique; Alterna Bamboo Anti-Breakage Spray and Balmain Argan Moisturizing Elixir. When blow-drying, prevent the nozzle from touching the hair and don’t stay on the same section for too long as this can scorch your hair and lead to damage. Angle the drier down towards the floor to create a smoother finish. Rough dry the hair 80% and comb through with a Tangle Teezer. I always have one to hand as I absolutely love them. DARK LIPS
FOR THE SUMMER
asks a make-up artist how to get the vampy look.
Prudence Wade
A
s summer approaches, we tend to put our winter clothes away and bring out our warm weather outfits. The same ethos is often applied to our beauty bags: when the sun comes out, we pack up our dark lipsticks and eyeshadows in favour of brighter colours. However, this doesn’t always have to be the case. While you might associate berry lipsticks with autumn and winter, designers like MaxMara and Rick Owens made a strong case for darker pouts this season. It’s a surprising choice for the spring and summer months, but still totally wearable. It’s a way of experimenting with make-up without having to draw anything wacky on your face, or even learn any new techniques. Admittedly, you don’t want to look like Morticia Addams did your make-up in the middle of summer, which is why we asked Stila’s lead make-up artist Sascha Jackson for her top tips...
4 8 J U LY 2 0 2 0
Preparation
dry skin,” advises Jackson. It’s not like you need fancy new products to get soft, smooth lips, because there are plenty of home remedies which work just as well. The make-up artist has a few favourite DIY methods of her own, saying: “You can use some lip balm and an old toothbrush and gently scrub your lips until super smooth. Or, my personal favourite is making my own home-made lip scrub using coconut oil and brown sugar (if you only have white then that’s fine too). Mix them together in a small pot and work into the lips for a minute or two, then wipe away. Your lips will be super-smooth and soft.” For super-hydrated lips, you might be tempted to use lip balm or oils before applying lipstick, but Jackson warns against this as they “may hinder the performance of your lipstick - so make sure you wipe away any excess product”.
With any type of make-up, it’s important to prep your skin properly so the products glide on seamlessly. The same logic applies to your lips - and priming them is even more important when you’re wearing a bold, statement colour. “First, exfoliate your lips to get rid of any excess
Luckily, applying lipstick is one of the easiest things you can do in the world of make-up - all you need to do is draw the colour onto the shape of your pout.
Application

Burt’s Bees Lipstick in Russet River, £9.99, Holland & Barrett
However, Jackson says: “The bolder colour, the more precise you will need the finish to be” - so you might want to try something different than just swiping on lipstick. She suggests using a lip brush or a small, dense eyeshadow brush: “Load up the brush, then start by lining your lips, as you would a lip liner. Lining first makes sure you have crisp, neat edges. Then, you can then fill in the middle and any gaps - making sure your lips are evenly coated with product.”
Illamasqua Antimatter Lipstick in Turntable, £10 (was £20)
Finishing off the look Jackson calls this trend for darker lips a “welcome change from the usual summery shades of corals and pinks. But wearing a darker, bold lip in the summer months needs adapting from how you would perhaps wear it in the winter season, to make sure it keeps within the summer vibe.” This means you need to think about how your dark lip pairs with the rest of your make-up. Instead of going for a smokey eye, Jackson says: “I love pairing a dark berry lip with a contrasting pop of colour on the eyes. Nothing bold or crazy - just a bright eyeliner or a wash of a pastel shade will do. Think of wearing a dark berry lip with a yellow eyeliner, or pairing a deep burgundy brown lip with a wash of turquoise shadow.” She also recommends using bright and summery make-up for your skin. “Keep everything light and glowy,” Jackson suggests. “Try using an illuminating primer under your foundation, use highlighter on the cheekbones and high points of the face, and try to keep textures to a cream formula, as opposed to matte powder. This will make sure it sets off against the darker lip and ties in nicely with summer fashion and trends.”

5 ways to get the best results from your Pyramid FaceLift BEFORE
AFTER
M
any of you have written with questions about the Pyramid FaceLift, so this month Dr Kim discusses how you can ensure the best possible outcome from your treatments. The non-surgical Pyramid FaceLift is a 3-tier skin rejuvenation treatment that has exploded in popularity over the past year thanks to its celebrity fan base. 3 different treatments are delivered in a single session, working on every tissue layer in the face, to achieve skin tightening and resurfacing, volumising and plumping, and muscle toning for a facial lift. You can undergo a single Pyramid FaceLift for a skin boosting facial treatment, but for the full FaceLift effect, a course of at least 3 sessions is recommended. For management of acne scarring, 6 treatments over a longer period of time is usually recommended. The Pyramid treatments are also highly effective as part of a customised skin programme, the Pyramid MD Programme, that includes skin analysis, skincare products selected for your particular skin concerns, and adjunctive treatments like LED phototherapy or PRP in some cases. Programmes will be conducted over at least 6 months for optimal collagen boosting results. In order to maximise the outcome of advanced rejuvenation treatments of this kind, here are 5 things you can do to ensure the best possible outcome:
5 2 J U LY 2 0 2 0
Reduce excess sugar in your diet A process called glycation is one of the leading causes of skin ageing. Excess glucose combines with collagen and elastin fibres, and a chemical reaction results in formation of destructive molecules called Advanced Glycation End Products. These molecules harden and build up in the dermis over time, resulting in skin that loses its radiance, and a loss of elasticity.
Boost your intake of vitamin C and zinc One of the most important components of the Pyramid FaceLift is the fact that it not only helps to repair and reorganise damaged collagen, but also stimulates production of new collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. In order to do this, the body needs to have adequate stores of both vitamin C and zinc, the building blocks required for the synthesis of hyaluronic acid and collagen. Pack in the salad and seafood for brighter, firmer skin.

“If there is one skin care ingredient that is guaranteed to turn back time in the skin, it is retinol” for maximising results of all skin rejuvenation treatments. L-ascorbic acid is 100% bioavailable, unlike many of the other preparations, and worth the investment. If possible, use a high quality L-ascorbic acid for at least 14 days in advance of your treatments, and for at least 3 months after the end of your treatment course. This will help reduce redness and downtime, and clinical studies conducted by SkinCeuticals at Duke University demonstrated significant improvements in results – up to 20% difference - when advanced treatments are combined with CE Ferulic (which also contains vitamin E and ferulic acid). You can revert back to your usual night cream 3 days after your treatment, and preparations that are rich in regenerative peptides and niacinamide are ideal.
Post-Procedure Cream Not everyone has redness straight after a treatment, but you can certainly experience some sensitivity and dryness. Be sure to use products that are specifically designed for use post-procedure to avoid reactions as well as soothe and protect the skin.
Glycolic Acid Your skin can feel a little rough for a few days after a treatment. After 4 to 5 days, using a glycolic acid wash or overnight cream can restore softer, smoother skin.
Your body will produce its own growth factors in response to the RF microneedling, but increasingly, doctors are using topical preparations of growth factors – either your own activated growth factors in PRP, or ready formulated preparations – as part of your procedure to speed up your healing time. The science and understanding of how we can use growth factors to enhance results of advanced cosmetic procedures is increasing, and at a recent international cosmetic surgery conference, this was definitely the hot topic of discussion. Many techniques and preparations are used, although only a few come with well-conducted clinical trials. Your doctor will be able to provide more information about particular growth factor preparations during your consultation.
Sun protection This almost goes without saying. Wear a hat when you are outside, and ensure that you apply your SPF 50 daily, carrying it with you for re-application during the day. Your doctor will be able to recommend medical grade SPF preparations that are suitable to use immediately after your treatment.

Retinol If there is one skin care ingredient that is guaranteed to turn back time in the skin, it is retinol, a derivative of vitamin A. It comes in many forms, as well as different price points, so the majority of people are able to find a retinol that works for them. If you have particularly sensitive skin, introducing retinol slowly (once or twice a week), or using a slow-release or liposomal formulation can help. Retinol can make the skin more reactive during a course of treatments, so, depending on the retinol J U LY 2 0 2 0 5 3

MARVELLOUS MARBLE
Introducing original marbled wallpaper prints made in the traditional Japanese Art of Suminagashi, meaning ‘floating ink’ The process of Suminagashi involves colours being placed on the water surface, which then begin to expand on the water. They are only encouraged to move by air, nothing else disturbs the surface. The colours move in an organic way - when a dynamic pattern has been shaped, Natascha makes a print by placing and moving the paper on the water. Each piece is unique. Colour combinations are inspired by paintings such as Klimt, Monet and Van Gogh’s Starry Night, marbled in blues, yellow and gold. Contemporary pieces are created with bolder colours including neons. www.natmaks.com

Top considerations for an indoor pool need planning permission. Origin have a wealth of experience in gaining planning approval for indoor pools and they also manage the whole process for you so, no need to panic! Do you start with an architect? No, Origin do it all, providing initial design sketches and budgetary proposals free of charge in their feasibility studies. Architects are extremely well versed with domestic construction details, but unfortunately an indoor pool is very different. An architect can provide an outline design for an indoor pool but this may be an unnecessary expense as many don’t have the knowledge or insurances needed to take that design further.
S
o, you’ve decided on an indoor swimming pool, what now? There are many decisions to be made along the way, attention to detail and precise planning is crucial when designing a successful swimming pool and pool house. For anyone wanting to begin the process, here are the answers to key questions to help with the decision making. Are you interested in a stand alone indoor pool house or a pool house extension to your home? This is the biggest decision you’ll need to make when it comes to your indoor swimming pool as placement and location play a crucial role in the success of a project. There are advantages and disadvantages to both options. You’ll need to think about main use for the swimming pool, do you want a place to escape to away from the home or do you want it attached to your home? Will it play a big part in your daily routine? Do you have a budget you’re working towards? Will you need planning permission? For a stand alone pool house that is freestanding, complies to the permitted development design criteria and doesn’t affect your permitted development rights, it’s likely you won’t need planning permission. However, a pool house extension to your home will

Which features have the biggest impact on cost? The most popular size for an indoor pool is between 8m to 12m as the bigger the pool, the bigger the cost. For avid swimmers, there are some excellent counter current swim devices available making the size of the pool less important. Buying a pool cover is one of the bigger investments you’ll make throughout the process but they’re worth it as an important part of the pool design. They retain heat, reduce running costs and provide a level of safety, making them a necessity rather than an option. When adding different features to your indoor swimming pool, it’s important to remember your original motivation. Did you want to create a place of relaxation? Your own fitness centre? A social hub for friends and family? Origin’s experts can discuss your requirements, guide you through the options and produce a fully costed proposal and design for you allowing you to undertake the ultimate home improvement so you can finally achieve the perfect work life balance. SIMPLE
WAYS TO FENG SHUI Finding calm and positive energy at home has never felt more important, says
a connection with nature,” says Rosheen Forbes, commercial activity & events leader at IKEA UK & Ireland. “Adding plants and greenery is an easy place to start, and depending on the ‘bagua’ (centre of energy), the colours you choose can increase the energy in certain areas. Calculating your bagua map is simple but needs approaching differently depending on your home,” Forbes adds. “If you live in an apartment, align the bottom of the bagua map with the front entrance wall. If you live in a house, use a compass and place the ‘career area’ (bottom middle on the bagua map) where your compass indicates the north. “So, when planning your garden, think about planting blue and purple flowers in your ‘wealth corner’ (south east), and pink, white and red flowers in the ‘relationship corner’ (south west) to increase the energy around love and partnerships. “Furthermore, outdoor mirrors can be used to attract abundance. With its curved shape and smooth flowing lines, an oval mirror can be used to reflect the light from the sun, making the space feel bigger and brighter. For smaller spaces, place two mirrors to face each other so the light bounces off, creating beautiful brightness.” Fancy giving your home some Feng Shui magic? Read on for more tips on how to go about it...
Sam Wylie-Harris.
W
ith a growing focus on finding comfort at home and turning our living spaces into calming sanctuaries, this year has reignited our interest in Feng Shui. The ancient Chinese practice is all about creating harmony in a space - but goes far beyond using colour and light to create the right ambience, for instance. Strategically placing furniture to promote wellness, using artwork and living plants to get the right vibes and keeping rooms clear of clutter all factor. Based on the belief there’s a continuous flow of ‘chi’ - or energy - between an individual and their surroundings, thinking about how to arrange our objects to promote good work-life balance has additional appeal right now, with so many more of us adapting to life without a commute. There’s plenty of scope for Feng Shui to feature in gardens and patios too, for an extra boost when you throw open the doors or look out the window. “The practice of Feng Shui aims to strike a balance between the self and the natural world. It can be applied to any room of the home, particularly outdoor spaces, where there’s already 6 8 J U LY 2 0 2 0
Think about muted tones and textures
“The ancient Chinese practice is all about creating harmony in a space”
“When introducing the tools of Feng Shui into the home you need to think about adding balance and drawing energy into the room,” says Wil Law, home design stylist for John Lewis. “You can start with colours - using muted tones mixed with natural materials and soft furnishing accessories immediately creates a calming effect. Try a natural wooden armchair (like our Croft Collection Frome Leather Armchair, £899, John Lewis), with muted colours on the walls and textured vases and ornaments with a soft rug or carpet underfoot,” says Law.
Keep colours positive if you’re not into neutral Of course, colour is subjective, and what’s positive and calming to one person may be undesirable to
another. Alex Whitecroft, head of design at I Want Wallpaper, suggests using colours that reflect your personal happiness - but try to avoid darker colours or too much black, as these can sap positive energy flows throughout the home. “Brighter colours will have an immediately uplifting effect, so this may be the perfect opportunity to create a feature wall. You might even want to go so far as using your ‘commanding position’ (the spot furthest from the door and not in direct line with it) wall as the accent - and earn yourself double Feng-Shui points while you’re at it.” If you’re not sure where to start, check out I Want Wallpaper’s Erismann Paradiso Tropical Leaves Pattern Wallpaper in Jungle Leaf Forest, £12.99 per roll. In Feng Shui, green is the colour of renewal, fresh energy and new beginnings and is believed to help relieve stress. If going green with walls isn’t possible, Whitecroft says to look for accessories to enhance good energy. Living plants, brightly coloured cushions or a wall decoration will brighten a room and tie the look together in one fell swoop.
and bobs will maximise your desk area, while taking up less room - and they can be rolled away when it’s time to log off. Ikea’s FJALLBO Laptop Table, £55, ticks all the right boxes - and can even double up as a drinks trolley in the garden.
Aim for minimal clutter
Try to separate work and relaxation Another key Feng Shui tip is to keep your work space separate from your relaxation area, to help balance your work and home life and enable you to properly ‘switch off ’ while working from home. Out of sight, out of mind can only be a positive move on many levels - signalling when it’s time to end those video conferencing calls, light a candle and chill out. And just in case you’re wondering, candles should be placed in the bagua of your home - as well as releasing daily stress, their glow brings fiery energy and will keep the ‘chi’ harmonious and happy. But back to the business of a work station: slim, movable tables, deep enough for a laptop and bits
“If you’re short on outdoor space, stress not. Think about bringing the outside in with some greenery”
The starting point for any positive environment is to keep kitchen work surfaces and table tops as clear as possible. This might mean having a good sortout, and investing in some suitable storage solutions. “Old magazines, dusty ornaments and general brica-brac once placed in haste and never removed will not contribute to a positive energy environment,” says Whitecroft. “If you find it hard to part with sentimental clutter, find a box to neatly pack it away. Do be cautious though - simply moving clutter from one spot to another won’t do much to aide your energy flow. Donate to charity shops or find a way to bid farewell to items in order to clear your space, and ultimately, your mind.”
Bring the outside in If you’re short on outdoor space, stress not. Think about bringing the outside in with some greenery. “Plants are a brilliant way to bring energy into the room, add colour and cleanse the air. They look great in natural baskets or ceramic vases and succulents are easy to care for,” says Law Last but not least, another important Feng Shui tool to build a soothing environment is to consider carved furniture with smooth edges, over angular and sharp designs. Sharp edges and corners, otherwise known as bad energy ‘sha’, could have a negative effect when you’re unwinding - and right now it’s all about maximising the feel-good factor where we can and letting positive vibes flow!

LUXURY LIGHTING:
A new collection from Nicola Schellander
L
uxury glassware and lighting designer and manufacturer Nicola Schellander has unveiled a new collection of bespoke hand-blown and hand-cast glass lighting and interior accessories. Nicola, a multi-award-winning designer, draws on her years of experience in both the glass and crystal industries to create her unique, elegant designs including lights and chandeliers. Inspired by a gap in the UK’s lighting market - which in the main relies on mass-produced imports - Nicola uses the finest craftsmanship to produce exquisite hand-sculpted designs which are customisable to the buyer’s own specifications. Nicola said: “Perhaps contrary to popular belief, you can do anything with glass, and I realised this was a real niche. “It’s a fascinating material. As part of my work I might mould it, cut it or curve it into shapes using a whole range of different implements. I can hand-sculpt and reheat it over and over to tease out different designs each time. The possibilities are endless.” She added: “With the vast majority of lights in the UK they appear the same from every angle. I create my designs, so they give a different perspective from different angles. Each one is handmade rather than manufactured from moulds, to give them their uniqueness.” Nicola counts interior designers and private buyers among her clients and says much of her enjoyment comes from demonstrating to them just how fluid glass can be. She said: “Sometimes the fluidity of glass can be a real revelation to customers. So, when they first come to me they might be limited in their idea of what they want from me. In general, the majority might have an idea for a moulded design as generally that is what they
7 2 J U LY 2 0 2 0
have always been used to seeing. “But when I talk to them about all the other techniques I can use and the styles I can create they get really excited. It’s a great part of the process as this is when the ideas between us come alive. They really can get involved in the design process – even if they don’t have any idea what they want we can start from scratch. We might use a mood board and work on a brief together before I put some ideas together for them to see.”
“The unique collection is available in 18 different colours, with 14 different flex colour options” Nicola’s lights are designed for kitchen counters, kitchen islands, dining tables and restaurants and are also ideal as a cascade in a stairwell or a hallway. She is also collaborating with a company to work on adapting the designs for bathrooms which is an emerging trend. The designs can then be made to IP45 bathroom lights standards. The unique collection is available in 18 different colours, with 14 different flex colour options, but Nicola said she can also mix and match colours and create new colours to order. Her creations are designed so that customers can choose to hang them on their own or in twos or threes or more. They can be mixed with different shapes, sizes or different colours, or can hang from different heights, for a more dramatic effect. “I find that more and more of my clients are looking for customisable goods,” Nicola said. “The majority of customers today want to know they’ve played a part in designing their home. I design my products so they can personalise them. They can stack and change, choose their own colours, there’s a lot they can do so whatever it is they decide to buy for their home they have a real input and can put their own stamp on the design.” www.nicolaschellander.com

In the new normal, souvenirs from souks, textiles and prints that draw on a mix of cultural influences, and decorative trimmings that reflect our eclectic tastes, feel as out of reach as a Moroccan riad - and wafting down a mosaic-tiled courtyard in a beaded kaftan. But while we’re social distancing, would-be globetrotters and those loving lockdown are perfectly placed to spice things up at home with warm tones of terracotta, a gleam of gold, and rich fabrics to capture a timeless, laid-back look inspired by the past, as we look forward to the future. Here’s how to introduce some sun-drenched stylish updates... “As spring creeps into summer, add touches of warmth to your scheme with terracotta reds, soft pinks and hints of gold,” says Emily Dunstan, home buyer at Heal’s. “Drawing inspiration from
the outdoors will create a comforting environment that’s gentle on the eye, perfect for a relaxing lounge area or bedroom; while blending rich, earthy tones with refined elements of brass and gold will evoke an exotic feel, bringing a sense of holiday heat into your home.”
It’s all in the detail
“Dunstan suggests weaving earthen tones into your existing palette with soft furnishings”

Dunstan suggests weaving earthen tones into your existing palette with soft furnishings, such as their Linie Design’s Monu Rug in rose. “Its elegant, abstract motif will add interest, whilst subtle golden detailing will catch the light and create a subtle shimmer.” For smaller finishing touches, try introducing a distinctive pattern, such as those seen on this Stones Cushion, which combines rich gold with an eyecatching print, to add a hint of nomadic luxe. And to mirror the ornate carved detailing and handmade pieces you might see in a souk, Amara’s version looks as authentic as one you might be tempted to try and stuff in your suitcase. To make a larger statement, a patterned sofa in warm hues will create a focal point within the room: “This season, One Nine Eight Five (Heal’s design studio) took inspiration from the curves of our Wallis sofa, creating an abstract design that echoes the shades of spring. Featuring deep red and orange brush strokes alongside nude shades,
this bold upholstery also includes a velvet ochre backing, drawing the eye from every angle,” explains Dunstan.
Beige and browns blend effortlessly together Bold without being overpowering, shades of spice, rust and terracotta are design staples that lend themselves to a multitude of decors, from Scandi to mid-century,” says Suzy McMahon, buying director for Sofology. “These are colours that work best when chosen to complement, rather than clash. Keep walls and furniture tonal and embrace the richness that comes from reddish oranges and rusty browns.” For a truly impactful scheme, she recommends pairing accents of saturated tones of green, black and navy. And you can enhance the look with darker metallics, such as gold and bronze, rather than silver or chrome. “Furnishing your space with upholstery in one of these versatile spiced hues will create a warm and cosy feel,” says McMahon, and the choice of material will really set the tone here. “Selecting a velvet will create an opulent, luxurious finish, whereas a linen or cotton will bring a sophisticated
yet relaxed atmosphere. Layer with throws and scatter cushions in similar shades and tactile textures, to bring added comfort and depth to your scheme.”
Make the switch to decorative lighting As Claire Hornby, head of creative at Barker & Stonehouse points out, lighting is an integral part of any Moroccan-inspired interior. As well as floor-standing lanterns with an artisan feel, and the flattering soft glow of candles, an array of rattan pendants hung at various heights will offer a nod to bazaar style, without compromising the calm vibe of the space.
Warm golds radiate warmth A cool palette of grey and deepest charcoal, backed by a wall painted in gold or mustard, offers an earthy contrast and works brilliantly in an entrance hall or fireplace surround. Team with monochrome travel prints for a glowing getaway feeling. “Terracotta and rust are colours found in nature and offer a connection to the outside world, creating a sense of calm,” says Helen Shaw, director of Benjamin Moore UK. “Incorporating rich, bold spice colours creates instant character, taking a small space from sterile to stylish.” And if you really want to luxe it up, what could be more wondrous on the wall than metallic feather wallpaper? “We may not be able to go on fabulous holidays right now, but that doesn’t stop us taking inspiration from the stunning aesthetics of Moroccan interiors,” says Alex Whitecroft, head of design at I Want Wallpaper. “The use of spicy, warm tones and pops of gold can bring a much needed heat, and create a sense of the exotic in any room. Try a splash of cobalt blue to really bring a room to life - as inspired by the incredible Jardin Majorelle in Marrakech.”

OUTDOOR LIVING OUTSIDE ILLUMINATIONS
To decorate your outside space, start with festoon lights, hang them as a single string or double up for added illumination, position them over outdoor seating to be enjoyed on warmer days. Then, it’s time to think about low-level lighting, place spotlights at ground level to illuminate shrubbery and trees, giving an instant wow-factor to the space. Finally add finishing touches such as wall lights near the door, which’ll be very practical once the sun has set and for an extra decorative touch place a pair of garden lanterns near the door. www.lights4fun.co.uk

Current Trends in Home Design T he team at Design Work Studios, your local architectural studio, have put their heads together to come up with 10 trends to watch out for over the next six months.
• Green credentials Increasing public concern for the state of the environment has given momentum to initiatives such as Passivhaus (for new builds) and EnerPHit (for existing buildings). Expect to also see the growth of green roofs, living walls, and biophilic design.
• Smart homes Gadgets can help by monitoring usage, and also automating fuctions, such as light, temperature and security. You can even check in to see what your dog is up to when you’re out at work!

• Vaulted ceilings If you don’t have existing beams worthy of exposing, no problem – you can just add new ones! • High gloss kitchens Expect to see forest greens and midnight blues abound, with brass replacing the copper accents popular in 2019, along with hidden handles and integrated appliances. • Lantern skylights Natural light is always on-trend, but lately we are seeing more people branching out from traditional flat skylights, opting instead for lantern models.
• Tech imaginings When doing a home renovation, it can be hard to visualise from drawings what the finished product will look like. Virtual Reality comes to the fore in allowing you to walk through your project before it even begins.
• Colours The Pantone 2020 colour of the year for 2020 is the elegant ‘19-4052 Classic Blue’, while Milan Design Week showcased bolder shades of lemon yellow, pumpkin red, fuschia, and sky blue.
• Open plan living The popularity of open plan living will continue this year, with even more emphasis on the ideal configuration for both entertaining and quiet, cosy time.
• Mid-century modern furniture There are many new offerings that take inspiration from this design era, and it is possible to get hold of unique second-hand pieces that provide great quality for a good price.
• Boot rooms These are becoming popular as a way of keeping utilities out of the main area, somewhere to leave your boots after a muddy walk, and even a dedicated space to shower off the dog!
Which of these trends gives you inspiration for a new project? Are you looking to extend or convert your property? Book a free consultation with Design Work Studios.

ORCHIDS
KEEP YOUR BLOOMING THROUGH SUMMER
Expert Mark Riley shares five hacks to stop your orchids from overheating.
S
truggling to stop your orchids from wilting? Direct sunlight and high temperatures can wreak havoc on our most popular indoor plant, and so a major orchid grower is advising flower fans to make some simple changes to their normal plant-care routine. Millions of phalaenopsis orchids, commonly known as moth orchids, are sold every year and normally require minimum upkeep, until summer temperatures can result in flopping flowers. But there are easy solutions. “Growing orchids in the summer heat is really easy as long as you make some simple tweaks,” says Mark Riley, an expert from specialist Love Orchids (loveorchids.co.uk). “Extra water, some plant food and a position away from direct sun is key. Orchids look beautiful, can flower for months and last for years. And there’s an orchid for everyone’s tastes.” Some hacks can be followed all year round. Don’t, for instance, leave your orchid next to your fruit bowl, as they’re sensitive to ethylene gas, which can be produced by ripening fruit. If you leave your orchid too close to your fruit, its flowers may drop. Other methods work well in summer. Riley offers five further hacks to keep plants blooming for weeks in the warmer weather...
Water twice a week instead of once “Orchids normally only need a weekly water, but in high temperatures, this should be increased. Run your orchid under a tap or let it soak in the sink for a few minutes. Well-watered roots have plump green roots. If they look silvery grey or shrivelled, pop the plant under the tap.” 8 0 J U LY 2 0 2 0
Use the ice cube trick “Add a few ice cubes to the surface of the bark instead of watering, avoiding the leaves. They will gradually melt and provide the required hydration. Make sure any surplus water is removed from beneath the orchid within an hour, as orchids don’t like sitting in water.”
Grab some gravel and give misting a miss “Orchids originate from warm, tropical Asia and prefer humid conditions, rather than dry. Increase humidity for your orchid by placing the pot on a layer of wet gravel, keeping the water level below the top of the stones. “Avoid using a water ‘mister’ as this can lead to spotting on the flowers and deposits on the leaves, as many water supplies are ‘hard’, containing limescale.”
Add feed “Orchids grow more actively during the summer, so add fertiliser to the water fortnightly. Their nutritional requirements are very minimal so only use orchid-specific ‘food’ and never exceed the recommended dose. During cooler weather, orchids can happily survive on water without additional feed.”
Don’t let it shine “Orchids love a bright window, but they’re not keen on direct sunlight, particularly in hot, dry weather. They also don’t like radiators. East or west-facing windows and bathrooms are best. “While some houseplants can be placed outside in summer, orchids are best grown inside. If you desperately want to put them outside, avoid bright sunlight and bring them inside if night temperatures are likely to dip to lower than 10C,” Riley advises.
“Orchids normally only need a weekly water, but in high temperatures, this should be increased. Run your orchid under a tap or let it soak in the sink for a few minutes”
