For the very first time, the UK will host an array of unique pieces from the mysterious political activist, satirist and artist, who has spent most of the last three decades anonymously tagging the streets of the world. This globally acclaimed showcase features original and authenticated works associated with, arguably, the most intriguing and talked-about artist in modern history. On display are prints, canvasses, screen prints, sculptures, unique works and limited-edition pieces mainly dated between the years 1997 to 2008, the period which resulted in Banksy’s most recognisable and well-known works. On loan from private collectors across the globe, the colossal collection includes authenticated and certified Banksy artworks rarely seen in public, alongside iconic favourites such as HMV Dog and Girl and Balloon. Infamous prints, sculptures and limited editions will be scattered across a vast 12,000 square foot space in the heart of Covent Garden. From Tel Aviv to Toronto, from Melbourne to Miami, the exhibition has welcomed over 750,000

visitors worldwide. Following Banksy’s Show me the Monet artwork collecting over £7.5m at auction, public intrigue around one of the most talked-about artists of the 21st century seems to only be increasing. Decades of rumours continue as to the identity of this world record-breaking artist. Although The Art of Banksy is not authorised or curated in collaboration with the artist himself, international specialist in the Street Art Genre, Chris Ford, successfully steps up as curator. Chris was instrumental in developing the commercial rise of Banksy’s artwork in the secondary market, successfully placing multi-million pound works into prestigious international collections. NEW OPENING: COPPA CLUB COMES TO COBHAM C oppa Club are pleased to announce they will open the doors to their Cobham village townhouse on Wednesday 9th December. Following their previous successful openings, the venue continues Coppa’s central premise to create a space for locals to make their own. ‘When we first opened Coppa five years ago we wanted to create a space that combined all the best elements of a café, bar, restaurant and lounge into one offering that provided something for everyone - a private members club experience, without the membership fees, with an informal, relaxed feel that ethos has never left us,’ says Founder, Hugh Osmond. With stylish and contemporary interiors designed by Fox & Church, the spacious venue spanning two floors is designed to be a homeaway-from-home. Daytimes at Coppa Cobham will see the open-plan ground floor flooded with natural light from the glass roof and play host to everyone from working professionals escaping both the commute and the confines of their ‘home office’ to families lunching by the fireplace. With multi-purpose spaces spread across both floors, guests are able to settle in for the day; from breakfast in the restaurant to meetings over coffee in the lounge or from dinner in the private dining room to finishing with cocktails at the central bar. Upstairs, the expansive rooftop terrace garden provides a welcoming space for mixed households to meet for a drink. Dotted across the rooftop will also be five of Coppa Club’s much-loved signature igloos complete with heated flooring, individual sound systems, blankets and foliage inspired by the vineyards of Champagne. Open early until last orders, an all-day menu takes guests from breakfast to dinner with a selection of seasonal European dishes including Devon crab linguine with capers & chilli, Loch Duart salmon on the plancha with braised puy lentils, garlic & rosemary roast lamb rump and sourdough pizzas. Elsewhere on the menu, sharing plates of seared garlic king prawns, sashimi grade tuna carpaccio with a yuzu dressing and truffle & smoked mozzarella arancini will embody the European focus on conviviality. For a lighter bite there are also bowls and salads including

the ‘buddha bowl’ filled with grains, tenderstem broccoli & rocket topped with a soft-boiled egg and drizzled with tahini dressing and the ‘super greens and seeds’ with broccoli, beetroot, quinoa and toasted seeds, ideal for those looking for sustenance post workout. Once the work day draws to a close, Coppa Cobham transforms as the lights dim and guests can head to the bar for drinks and a light bite of parmesan croquettes or pecorino truffle fries. The bar serves a list of classic cocktails with a Coppa twist including their Negroni made with locallysourced Brighton Gin from their Sussex-based restaurant alongside a range of wines and beers. At weekends, brunch-lovers can expect a similarly laidback affair with plates of buckwheat and rye pancakes topped with either fresh berries, coconut yoghurt and granola or served with bacon, maple syrup and Netherend Farm butter. The bar team will also be on hand to mix up a mean Bloody Mary or Mimosa.

We start by asking if private home cinemas are becoming a more popular request from homeowners? As specialists in the design and build of private cinemas, we have seen a huge uplift of enquiries from customers wishing to improve an existing cinema setup, or create their own home cinema room in their property as a result of spending so much time at home. What impact has the pandemic had on commercial cinemas? With commercial cinema operators and film

studios experiencing a huge impact from the global pandemic, we no longer have the same choice of taking the family to the movies. People are spending much more time at home, and this is not going to go back to previous patterns any time soon it seems. Our behaviour has changed and when eventually the commercial cinemas are back up and running, the entire film industry has 20 DECEMBER 2020

Art & Action: Making Change in Victorian Britain (2 December 2020 – 21 March 2021) is the first exhibition to focus on the Victorian roots of art activism. Featuring key works by Sir Luke Fildes, William Morris and G F Watts, the exhibition explores how, in the Victorian era, art came to be recognised as a powerful tool that could enact social change, improve lives and ultimately shape the future. In Watts Contemporary Gallery, their annual show In Print returns for its fourth year, featuring twice the usual number of printmakers in order to support more artists and makers during this challenging time. ne of Britain’s finest chefs, Tommy Banks, will be serving up a fine dining experience at Lord’s Cricket Ground in 2021 when he becomes the opening chef of the new Edrich restaurant in a three-year partnership with Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). The contemporary restaurant will open as part of the new Compton and Edrich stands, offering Debenture-Seat Holders dishes boasting the best of British flavours alongside the finest views on major international match days, especially curated by Tommy. Born and bred in a small North Yorkshire village, Tommy’s first passion was cricket, dreaming of becoming a professional cricketer. Life however took him in a different direction, with his natural culinary talents leading him to swap cricket whites for chef whites. From his family’s farming background and working in his parent’s pub kitchen at a young age, Tommy has become highly acclaimed, known for unique

flavours and dedication to sustainably sourced food, from his own farm in Oldstead. In 2013, he was awarded a Michelin star aged 24, and he owns and runs two thriving restaurants, as well as a premium food box delivery service Made In Oldstead. Historic gardens transformed into a magical winter wonderland Painshill was developed in the 18th century by the Honourable Charles Hamilton and is filled with fantastic follies, including an island in the lake, a Roman temple, a gothic tower, a quaint thatched hermitage – and even an exotic Turkish tent. Our products are only available in the month before Christmas so that makes it special, but also a challenge!

Award Winning Patisserie & Chocolaterie We talk to Chris Bachmann from Bachmann’s Patisserie Why is Christmas special at Bachmanns? I think it comes down to our products- we make such a variety of Christmas specialities that everyone who comes through the doors can find something special they like to give as a gift or treat themselves. Over the years we have built up an ever growing long fan base of a “Bachmanns Christmas”. Our regular customers always make a trip in December to see what my team have created, and the shop is always busy during Advent, when we the shops look so festive. What sells best at Christmas? That’s a difficult one! It changes from year to year if I’m honest. We make Stollen, Christmas Puddings, Christmas Cakes, Mince Pies, Christmas Petits fours, and a bewildering array of Chocolate Christmas products. If I had to pick out favourites, it would be difficult to be honest, but our Prune and Cognac Tart was previously named as the best Christmas Cake or dessert in the UK, and more recently, our Lebkuchen was named the best gingerbread, so I guess I’m particularly proud of those. “Tell us a little about the history of Bachmanns” My Dad started the business with my Mum in Thames Ditton in 1989. After training in Switzerland he’d enjoyed a stellar career in confectionary including stints as the executive pastry chef at the Dorchester and The Park Lane Intercontinental, and the Chief confectioner at the Swiss centre in Leicester Square. He wanted to create the kind of local shop that they have in Switzerland; a store that covers all aspects of chocolate and confectionary, at the highest of standards. Since it has started, Bachmanns Patisserie has gone on to win over 30 national awards, so I guess you can say he achieved that. I think that the real reason that we have been so successful over the years, and what I think sets us apart from many places, is the variety and sheer excellence of his recipes. Our products have a simplicity and clarity of flavour that is hard to match, and we do take care to never compromise on the quality of our ingredients. Across the year, we make over 450 different products, and change them through the seasons, so anyone will be able to find a favourite, and it keeps it exciting for our regular customers. I took over the business just over ten years ago, on his retirement, but he still provides my team with inspiration and guidance- in fact he’s in Thames Ditton right now making our German Lebkuchen (gingerbread)! A few years back we opened our second store in Weybridge, which was very exciting. It has allowed us to expand- we now have about twenty staff- and had the space to create a special separate chocolate room there, where we produce all our chocolates. The two sites both have their own pastry kitchen and they run in tandem, with each site specialising in certain areas, but all our products are hand finished every morning in both shops. It was a doubling of size and a huge investment for us. So far it has been a great success, and it’s been very satisfying – and a relief(!) to watch the business grow.

March was like no other month in our trading history with the Covid 19 pandemic taking us into a national lockdown. Staying physically well and mentally positive was crucial. Team chats online as part of a regular contact strategy kept confidence levels up. Keeping in contact with our elderly clients by telephone was a small gesture that made a big difference. We also launched a special makeover treat promotion for 20 nominated NHS workers as a thank you for their crucial role in the fight against Covid-19. The 20 recipients were revealed on social media the evening prior to reopening. We came back with a socially distanced bang on July 4th with extensive safety measures, shift work and extended opening hours, 7am – 10pm. In August, we celebrated 21 incredible years of trading, beginning with Academy, Hersham

in 1999. Our ethos of ‘Family Hairdressing, Individual Style’ has made our five Surrey based destination salons a magnet for a multigenerational demographic of clients. Closing our doors again on November 4th for Lockdown 2.0 created a sense of déjà vu. Naturally, we continued with our Lockdown 1.0 plan of action, and the activities we introduced at that time; placing even greater emphasis on keeping in regular contact with our team, our friends and clients as the winter months can be tough going. We held weekly Zoom meetings with each of our 5 Academy salons as they were good for morale and great for brain storming.

Winter and Joint Pain

s winter arrives many people with Osteoarthritis will tell you that they can ‘feel it in their bones and joints’. Osteoarthritis is the degenerative type of arthritis affecting the articular cartilage and underlying bones in our joints. The most common symptoms include pain, stiffness, swelling, lack of stability, and limited range of movement. Managing these symptoms is vital to maintaining and improving your well-being all year round, and especially during the winter months when for reasons unknown they seem to worsen. “KEEP IT MOVING!” When you stop moving your joints become stiff with decreased range of motion, and your muscles start to lose strength and muscle mass. This combination may result in decreased stability, support, increased stiffness, and pain around the joint. That is why it is crucial to stay active. The seemingly “vicious cycle” with arthritis makes us want to move less due to the pain we are experiencing, yet this lack of motion further increases our pain and decreases our mobility. To break this cycle, a regular exercise program, which can simply be walking regularly, may help decrease pain and medication use. Strength training the muscles around your sore joint will also help to improve joint pain and stability. Pilates is an effective exercise practice for loosening up stiff joints while decreasing pain and increasing range of motion. the pressure of the weight on your joints and while moving your limb. Symptoms of gallstones not to ignore during the pandemic

ne of the hardest problems we face during the current crisis is when to call the doctor. There is a duty we all share not to overburden a stress health system, but also one we owe to ourselves and our family to look after ourselves. It is generally true that most surgical conditions are best treated before the symptoms become severe or complicated by such things as sepsis (infection), obstruction (blockage) or dissemination (spread to other tissues). This article is a guide to avoiding these in one common abdominal condition. A common condition I treat is gallstones. Gallstones are crystal of bile that form within the gallbladder. They can cause chronic symptoms of upper abdominal pain, nausea, heartburn, acid reflux and/or bloating. The symptoms are typically intermittent and worsened by fatty food but a small proportion of patients can be continuous and severe and triggered by almost any food. Atypical symptoms of gallstones can be abdominal cramps, chest pain of a non-cardiac origin, palpitations, diarrhoea, early fullness after meals (early satiety) and left sided abdominal pain.

“If a stone jams in the neck of the gallbladder it can cause a more acute pain (biliary colic) or lead to infection (acute cholecystitis): Gallstones are do not usually need treatment unless they cause patient symptoms. However, these can build (crescendo) as the stones grow over time, from almost insignificant to very severe. As an analogy, if you break your arm the loss of function is immediately noticed. If things build up gradually as gallstone symptoms can, we often we put the symptoms down to ‘getting old’ or ‘being less able to cope with things than I used to’. Like unassuming people, we often work round these manageable symptoms using symptomatic treatments or avoiding things that provoke attacks. If a stone jams in the neck of the gallbladder it can cause a more acute pain (biliary colic) or lead to infection (acute cholecystitis). These are relative 66 DECEMBER 2020

indications for cholecystectomy (removal of the gallbladder, usually by keyhole surgery). In this case surgery is an option to prevent further attacks. Further migration of stones in to the bile ducts can cause yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice) or severe back pain and vomiting due to pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas). These are often absolute indications for removal of the gallbladder as a way of preventing potentially serious or life-threatening complications. Surgery is a highly successful treatment for gallstones and its complications. All surgery has risks but these can be minimized by performing an operation in a controlled or elective setting where risk factors are optimized. This may include a special diet to help shrink the liver so surgery is safer in obese patients. In many cases surgery is a day-case procedure and full recovery to normal activity in 1-3 weeks. Where emergency surgery is performed complications such as infections and slower recovery are more common. It is not uncommon for people to report after gallbladder removal for gallstones how long they had put up with symptoms that they thought they were stuck with and an improvement in general health. It is a very satisfying condition for a surgeon to treat.

She likens hormones to the musicians in an orchestra, with each having to listen to the others in order to play in harmony. “When hormones play too loud or soft, too fast or slow, and don’t co-ordinate with the others, the sound produced may be jarring to the system.” Hormone imbalances are common, and many people men and women – suffer with symptoms that can be quite nonspecific and perhaps not serious enough to seek out medical help. Others are diagnosed and treated for something else (commonly depression), and the root cause of the problem may be missed. It is important to address imbalances as there are long-term health consequences from hormone deficiencies in both women and men – including loss of bone mass and an increased risk for chronic diseases such as cardiac disease, dementia and diabetes.

HORMONE IMBALANCES AFFECT BOTH MEN AND WOMEN Men and women share most of the hormones in the body, including oestrogen and testosterone. What makes us different is that these hormones are in different proportions and our bodies react to the same hormones in different ways. The creatures are nestled amongst the outsize foliage picked out in stunningly vibrant colours. Our inspiration for the next lamp was the Traditional Asian Rice Hat. Black & White Botanicals with Susannah Weiland Collection

usannah Weiland Collections produces handcrafted designs for luxury interiors. Susannah is a hand embroidery artist and a keen wild life photographer. She studied Graphic Design at university and has spent 20 years working in the fashion industry as a freelance textile print designer. Keen to learn new skills and try different creative mediums she had taken many evening and weekend courses in everything from oil painting and life drawing to perspex jewellery making and tapestry. Her grandmother first introduced her to hand embroidery as a child, and after taking a short course years later she was hooked! After a lot of experimenting she developed her signature style combining her favourite mediums: tonal pencil drawing with delicate hand embroidery and beading. Susannah’s work is always influenced

by the wildlife in different locations, her first range “The Botanical Collection” was inspired by Kew Gardens. Susannah pencil draws onto paper. Get In Bed With Great British Design With more time at home becoming the norm, interiors across the UK are getting more than their fair share of attention and none more so than the bedroom.

n recent years, the bedroom has gained popularity as the place to retreat, relax and escape from the rat race. And, these days, we need that more than ever. If a change would help you to rest better, then a luxurious, new upholstered bed has to be this years’ remedy for a boring bedroom … The feature bed is back! What’s more, the current economic situation has been challenging manufacturers and creative minds to work together and breathe new life into our interiors, promoting a spirit of teamwork and great British pluck. Exciting collaborations between innovative designers and makers are, currently serving up the best of British design in the face of uncertainty. One notable recent creative partnership is that of The Headboard Workshop with fabric designer, Charlotte Gaisford. The power pair set about designing the new Puffin Bed over the summer, exchanging ideas, sketches and designs. The outcome? A gloriously cheerful upholstered bed in a beautiful colour palette with feminine curves and modern lines. “The bed really has become the place in the

bedroom to stamp your style” says Laura KelwayBamber, creative director at The Headboard Workshop. “There are so many amazing materials on the market now that the sky is the limit. We make more than 18 styles of bed in over 150 plain fabrics or people can send us their own … which is how our relationship with Charlotte Gaisford first came to our attention”. Laura adds that with the trend for upholstered beds and headboards on the climb in recent years, they have received so many beautiful fabrics from Charlotte Gaisford’s stunning collections for upholstery, that it was high time the two of them got together to do something spectacular. The result of which is the new Puffin Bed in Sharanshar Green. Piped in a lively co-ordinating coral colour, the Sharanshar Green pattern is eye catching and pretty, making an exceptionally beautiful bed, its beauty, only outshined by its elevated level of comfort when paired with the Sark Mattress.
