his September, Claremont Landscape Garden invites visitors to experience one of its most evocative landmarks as part of Heritage Open Days 2026. Perched above the landscape, the 18th-century tower was designed as much for spectacle as for views. Once a status symbol of aristocratic life, its elevated position offered commanding panoramas towards Windsor Castle and London. Now, thanks to the co-operation of Claremont Fan Court School, which owns the tower, visitors can once again climb its spiral staircase and take in views across the surrounding tree canopy. De Vere Horsley Estate has been awarded the 2026 Surrey Hills Gold Award, the highest accolade presented by Surrey Hills Enterprises (SHE), recognising businesses that exemplify collaboration, sustainability and a lasting commitment to the Surrey Hills community. The award celebrates organisations that go beyond commercial success to champion the region through meaningful partnerships, and over the past year De Vere Horsley Estate has become a standout example. By working closely with fellow SHE members, local producers, charities and industry partners, the historic estate has helped showcase the very best of Surrey.

Cobham: Surrey’s Refined Country Escape T
ucked into the Surrey countryside, Cobham effortlessly combines village charm with understated sophistication. Just a short journey from London, this affluent corner of Surrey has long attracted those seeking a more relaxed pace of life without sacrificing style, convenience or connection to the capital. At the heart of Cobham is its elegant High Street, where independent boutiques, polished cafés and restaurants sit alongside heritage buildings and leafy streets. The atmosphere is distinctly cosmopolitan yet reassuringly English: smart without being showy, and lively without losing its sense of tranquillity. Beyond the centre, Cobham reveals another side of its character. Winding country lanes, mature woodland and open green spaces create a feeling of rural seclusion, while grand properties and beautifully landscaped gardens add to the area’s sense of exclusivity. The nearby Painshill estate is a particular highlight, offering an extraordinary 18thcentury landscape of lakes, bridges, woodland and architectural follies. For food lovers, Cobham has developed a reputation for sophisticated dining, from contemporary restaurants to relaxed neighbourhood favourites. Its proximity to some of Surrey’s most celebrated countryside also makes it an appealing base for leisurely weekends of long

walks, country drives and lingering lunches. Lifestyle is perhaps Cobham’s greatest luxury. Residents can enjoy the best of both worlds: the cultural energy, shopping and business opportunities of London within easy reach, paired with the privacy, greenery and community spirit of a quintessential Surrey setting. It is this balance that gives Cobham its enduring appeal. More than simply a desirable commuter location, it offers a distinctive way of living—one where beautiful surroundings, excellent amenities and a sense of space come naturally. For those drawn to refined country living with a distinctly contemporary edge, Cobham remains one of Surrey’s most compelling addresses.

Beautiful Surrey Autumn Walks: T Golden Woodland, Glorious Views & Cosy Country Pubs
here are few better ways to experience the changing seasons than with a walk through the Surrey countryside in autumn. As summer fades, the landscape takes on a softer, richer character: ancient woodlands glow with copper and russet leaves, mist hangs gently over rolling hills, and the low autumn sun casts a golden light across the Surrey Hills. It is also the perfect season for combining a countryside stroll with one of Surrey’s welcoming country pubs. From spectacular hilltop views to peaceful lakeside paths, here are some of the most beautiful autumn walks to enjoy this year.

surrounding countryside, it offers an unforgettable combination of woodland, open downland and far-reaching views. Autumn brings an extra layer of magic. The beech trees turn brilliant shades of gold and bronze, while fallen leaves create a carpet beneath your feet. The famous Box Hill views are particularly beautiful on crisp, clear mornings, when the countryside seems to stretch endlessly into the distance. For a rewarding finish to your walk, make your way to The Running Horses in Mickleham. With its traditional country-pub character and welcoming atmosphere, it is an ideal place to enjoy a hearty meal or warming drink after a day exploring the hill.
Leith Hill: Golden Woodland and Panoramic Views If you love the romance of an autumn forest, Leith Hill should be high on your list. Winding woodland paths lead through some of the most atmospheric countryside in Surrey, with ancient trees, quiet tracks and glimpses of the surrounding hills. The walk towards Leith Hill Tower is especially rewarding. Once at the top, pause to take in the magnificent panorama before descending through the colourful woodland. Afterwards, continue to The Plough Inn at Coldharbour, where the traditional pub setting

Abinger & Holmbury St Mary: The Surrey Hills at Their Best For a quintessentially English countryside experience, explore the footpaths around Abinger and Holmbury St Mary. This is Surrey at its most charming: wooded hills, quiet lanes, open fields and pretty villages combine to create a landscape that feels wonderfully removed from everyday life. Autumn is arguably the finest time to explore this area. The woodland is ablaze with colour, the air is crisp and the paths are wonderfully peaceful. When it is time to warm up, stop at The Abinger Hatch or head towards The King’s Head in Holmbury St Mary. Both capture the welcoming spirit of the traditional Surrey village pub.
provides the perfect contrast to a day outdoors. Imagine muddy boots, a roaring fire, a comforting plate of food and a pint or hot drink while the autumn weather rolls across the hills outside. Newlands Corner & St Martha’s Hill: Views to Remember For those who enjoy a walk with a spectacular viewpoint, the route between Newlands Corner and St Martha’s Hill is difficult to beat. The landscape changes constantly as you move between woodland and open Surrey countryside. In autumn, the trees become a tapestry of amber, crimson and gold, while the elevated viewpoints provide wonderful views across the surrounding hills. St Martha’s Church, perched high above the landscape, is an especially atmospheric place to pause. Visit towards late afternoon and you may catch the warm autumn light illuminating the countryside below. Afterwards, head to The Onslow Arms in West Clandon. Its picturesque setting and classic country-pub atmosphere make it a lovely destination for a leisurely drink or dinner. Virginia Water: Autumn by the Lake For something more leisurely, Virginia Water offers one of the most picturesque autumn strolls in the county. The lake provides beautiful reflections of the surrounding trees, while winding paths take you through woodland and landscaped grounds. It is an ideal choice for a relaxed weekend walk, particularly if photography, wildlife and scenery are more important than a challenging hike. The colours around the water can be extraordinary in autumn, especially on a still morning when the trees are reflected perfectly on the lake. Round off the day at The Wheatsheaf in 20 SEPTEMBER 2026

The Perfect Autumn Day Perhaps the greatest pleasure of an autumn walk in Surrey is that the experience does not have to end when you reach the car park. Take your time. Walk beneath golden trees, pause at a hilltop viewpoint, breathe in the crisp country air and then retreat to a cosy pub as the afternoon light begins to fade. With beautiful landscapes on the doorstep and characterful country pubs waiting at the end of the trail, Surrey offers everything you could want from an autumn escape. So pull on your walking boots, wrap up warm and follow the golden leaves. The Surrey countryside is waiting.

THE ALLURE OF ASCOT
T
here are places that simply have an atmosphere of their own, and Ascot is undoubtedly one of them. Synonymous with elegance, heritage and a certain effortless sophistication, this charming Berkshire town offers far more than its famous racecourse. A Sporting Heritage Ascot’s name is forever associated with Ascot Racecourse, one of the world’s most celebrated sporting venues. While Royal Ascot remains the highlight of the social calendar, the racecourse hosts an exciting programme throughout the year, bringing together racing, fashion, fine dining and a distinctly British sense of occasion.
Elegant Surroundings Beyond the racecourse, Ascot is surrounded by beautiful countryside and some of Berkshire’s most desirable residential areas. Tree-lined avenues, substantial homes and open green spaces give the town a sense of space and tranquillity, while its proximity to Windsor Great Park provides endless opportunities for walking, cycling and enjoying the outdoors. A Taste of the Good Life Ascot has an appealing collection of restaurants, cafés, bars and independent businesses, making it easy to enjoy everything from a leisurely coffee to an elegant evening out. Nearby Sunningdale and Windsor add even more choice, creating a wonderfully varied lifestyle without the need to travel far. The Best of Both Worlds One of Ascot’s greatest attractions is its location. It offers the peace and character of a prestigious country setting while remaining remarkably well connected. London is within easy reach, as are Heathrow and the M3 and M25, making Ascot particularly attractive to those who value both a refined lifestyle and effortless connectivity. 22 SEPTEMBER 2026

A Place with Character Perhaps the real appeal of Ascot lies in its balance. It feels established without being stuffy, sophisticated without being showy, and peaceful without feeling remote. There is a strong sense of community alongside a cosmopolitan edge, with excellent schools, leisure facilities and beautiful surroundings adding to its appeal. From race days and country walks to long lunches and quiet Sunday mornings, Ascot has a way of making everyday life feel just a little more special. Elegant, well connected and unmistakably British, it is easy to see why Ascot continues to inspire such enduring affection.

hint of the Malibu beach buggy free-spirit era of the ‘60’s comes to Ascot Racecourse on Saturday, 12th September as Ascot-based Historics Auctioneers stages its major live autumn sale of 170 wonderful classic cars. The pair of beach buggies honour the late, great Bruce F. Meyers. One, an exact homage to the Meyers Manx ‘Goldie2’ buggy that raced the 1,000 mile USA Baja desert race in 2002, the other a genuine, super-rare RHD 1971 2+2 Manxter, both built and expertly crafted by Buggy Builders of Bosham, Sussex. Well and truly on the collector radar is a striking orange duo of 1971 Ford Escort Mexicos with exceptional and unique Formula 1 provenance one raced by Colin Chapman of Lotus fame, the other by Max Mosley, one of the founders of STP March F1 - in a memorable 1971 Brands Hatch race against other team bosses. The same desirability applies to a ‘brand new’ 1991 BMW Z1 that’s never been registered since being sold to the vendor 35 years ago. It’s one of nine stand-out BMWs on sale, including a rare, exquisite and very original 1983 BMW 628 CSi. TIME AND SPEED: REUNITED BREITLING AND ASTON MARTIN PRESENT Top Time Tribute to the iconic DB5
I
ntroduced in 1963, one of the world’s most iconic on-screen cars, the Aston Martin DB5, became synonymous with British culture, design, and innovation, firmly establishing Aston Martin as one of Britain’s most desirable luxury brands. Today, Aston Martin and Breitling proudly bring that shared legacy to the wrist with the Top Time B01 Chronograph 41 Tribute to Aston Martin DB5 - presented in three distinct limited editions. In the 1960s, the Top Time was Breitling’s unconventional chronograph, created for a new, youthful, speed-driven audience. When a Top Time ref. 2002 appeared on Sean Connery’s wrist in Thunderball (1965), worn alongside the Aston Martin DB5, two icons of the era shared a defining moment in design history. It marked the first Q-modified watch in the James Bond series, and a chapter where speed and style found a common language. That moment is reinterpreted here through material and form. Wood-inlayed details, handcoloured gradient leather straps, and refined dial executions echo the interiors of the Aston Martin DB5. The result is a watch that captures the feel of being behind the wheel of Aston Martin’s classic grand tourer. Every detail of the Top Time Tribute to Aston

Martin DB5 brings together two design legacies: the tactile richness of Aston Martin interiors and the modern-retro codes of the Top Time. The cushionshaped case, grooved corners, and mushroom pushers recall the distinctive profile of the 1960s chronograph, while the “squircle” subdials capture the look of classic car dashboard gauges. A wooden inner ring draws on the DB5’s steering wheel, and the hand-coloured gradient leather strap reflects the depth and tone of fine automotive upholstery. Together, these elements create a watch shaped with the same attention to detail. “This chronograph blends form with true function,” says Breitling’s Head of Product Design Pablo Widmer. “As with the Aston Martin DB5, its beauty lies in its lines, materials, and finishings.”

The collection is offered in three editions: Stainless steel with a silver dial, limited to 1,022 pieces, offers a balanced take that’s closest in spirit to the original Top Time ref. 2002. Steel and platinum with a black lacquered dial, limited to 315 pieces, introduces contrast and depth, with the platinum bezel adding weight and presence against the high-gloss black surface. 18k red gold with onyx dial, limited to 250 individually numbered pieces, brings an even more elevated expression. The dial is cut from natural onyx, the first use of the stone by Breitling, revealing a unique depth and lustre. Across all three, the design details translate the Aston Martin DB5’s interior craftsmanship into a contemporary chronograph. Manufacture performance The engine of the watch is the Breitling Manufacture Caliber 01, a COSC-certified chronograph movement designed for precision and reliability. Its column-wheel architecture and vertical clutch ensure smooth, accurate operation, while a 70-hour power reserve supports extended wear. Visible through the open sapphire-crystal caseback, the movement is finished with a dedicated Aston Martin–engraved rotor – rhodium-plated or 18k red gold, depending on 40 SEPTEMBER 2026
the version. Each edition pairs this performance with a design language rooted in one of the most recognisable cars ever made. Marek Reichman, Executive Vice President and Chief Creative Officer at Aston Martin says: “These editions represent something truly distinct from anything we’ve created before. The collaboration with Breitling brought together two brands with a shared appreciation for timeless design, craftsmanship, and innovation, allowing us to exchange ideas in a way that felt both natural and ambitious. Inspired by the enduring elegance of the Aston Martin DB5 and our shared heritage of iconic design, the watch captures a balance of beauty, precision, and performance. Every detail has been carefully considered to reflect the character and authenticity synonymous with both brands. The result is a watch that feels contemporary today, yet timeless for generations to come.” The Top Time Tribute to Aston Martin DB5 revisits a moment when two distinct approaches to design aligned. One shaped in performance and proportion, the other in precision and form. Together, they continue to be markers of style, that stand the test of time. astonmartin.com/en-gb breitling.com/gb-en

We hope visitors feel the spirit of Winkworth reflected in this space—welcoming, thoughtful and rooted in the landscape. A HISTORIC CLAREMONT LANDMARK REOPENS
T
his September, Claremont Landscape Garden invites visitors to experience one of its most evocative landmarks as part of Heritage Open Days 2026. The National Trust garden will open free of charge on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 September, with the historic Belvedere Tower welcoming visitors for the first time since before the pandemic. The self-guided experience begins at Belvedere Mount and the tower’s ground floor, where volunteers will be available to share stories and answer questions before visitors ascend to the summit. The tower is just one highlight of a weekend celebrating Claremont’s extraordinary 300-year history. The Grade I listed landscape garden will also be open to explore, encompassing its serpentine lake, atmospheric grotto, Regency terrace, distinctive grass amphitheatre and sweeping designed views.
44 SEPTEMBER 2026
On Saturday 19 September, a gate between Claremont Landscape Garden and Claremont Fan Court School will also open, creating a rare opportunity to wander between the two historic properties. Visitors will be able to enjoy a freeflow, self-guided tour of selected rooms within the mansion. Claremont’s story is inseparable from some of Britain’s greatest landscape and architectural designers, including Sir John Vanbrugh, Charles Bridgeman, William Kent and Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown. This year is particularly significant as it marks the 300th anniversary of Vanbrugh’s life, providing a fitting moment to rediscover one of his earliest surviving works. Once home to a Prime Minister, an East India Company commander and European royalty, the Claremont estate was divided in the 1930s. Today, the National Trust cares for its 49-acre landscape garden, while Claremont Fan Court School occupies the mansion and surrounding parkland. For a weekend, these historic spaces will come together once more, offering a rare glimpse into Claremont’s aristocratic past — and a tantalising first step towards plans for wider access to the Belvedere Tower in 2027. nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/surrey/claremontlandscape-garden

ROLLS-ROYCE GHOST SAVILE ROW: A CELEBRATION OF BESPOKE TAILORING AND PERSONAL STYLE
C
Rolls-Royce Motor Cars presents Ghost Savile Row: luxury inspired by the art and craft of tailoring.
onceived as a motor car dressed in elegant Savile Row suiting, the twotone Midnight Sapphire over English White exterior is influenced by the quintessential combination of a navy suit paired with a crisp white dress shirt. A unique Silver Featureline evokes the subtle jewellery elements worn by the well-tailored, such as cufflinks and a dress watch. The theme extends inside with Navy Blue and Arctic White leathers – subtly uplifted with embroideries and pinstriping – Open Pore White Wood, and a hidden-untilrevealed embroidery behind the rear armrest that recalls the quiet flourish of a colourful jacket lining.
ROLLS-ROYCE AND SAVILE ROW: A QUIET KINSHIP Rolls-Royce and Savile Row have long shared a commitment to Bespoke. The term itself is closely associated with Savile Row, where cloth was traditionally described as being ‘bespoken’, or spoken for, by an individual client. For RollsRoyce, alongside its design and engineering 46 SEPTEMBER 2026
disciplines, Bespoke is at the heart of the marque today – an art in which Rolls-Royce Motor Cars leads the world. The two institutions have been close from the marque’s earliest days: Rolls-Royce opened its first showroom in 1905 on Conduit Street,
“The two institutions have been close from the marque’s earliest days”
in the heart of Mayfair, just moments from ‘the Row’. The marque’s co-founder, Charles Rolls, who would accompany test drives in the capital, was also famous for his personal style. While he was affectionately nicknamed ‘Dirty Rolls’ for the engine oil that marked his clothes during his time at Cambridge University, he was also known to be immaculately dressed for formal occasions, down to the silver pocket watch in his waistcoat. With the showroom so close by, he would have been familiar with Savile Row and its traditions, as many of the marque’s clients still are today.
INTERIOR DETAILS: A HIDDEN FLOURISH Tailoring references are present throughout the interior, where the commission’s boldest flourish awaits discovery. Lowering the rear centre armrest reveals a Bespoke embroidery, hidden like the colourful lining of a tailored jacket. The design is a plan view of the square trees in the courtyard at the Home of Rolls-Royce at Goodwood, and the shadows they cast. The piece comprises seven colours, took nine hours to create and includes 250,000 stitches and nearly two kilometres – 1,830 metres – of thread.
INTERIOR: A TRIBUTE TO TAILORING Beyond the hidden embroidery, the language of tailoring is woven throughout the interior. The seats are finished in Navy Blue and Arctic White leather. The carpets, lambswool floor mats and seatbelts are rendered in Navy Blue, with seat and door piping, contrast stitching and embroidered RR monograms in Selby Grey. The seats feature a Bespoke vertical run-stitch in Selby Grey, inspired by the pinstripe of a tailored suit – the first time Rolls-Royce has applied a pinstripe stitch to its seats. As with the meticulous pattern-matching of a tailored garment, the stitch is aligned to the geometry of each seat and framed by Selby Grey piping. The centre seam of each seat back meets the vertical embroidery of the Arctic White insert above. Set against the Navy Blue leather, the insert evokes a pressed white pocket square tucked into the breast pocket of a jacket. Each of the four inserts incorporates more than 16,600 stitches, embroidered tone-on-tone in two directions, like the warp and weft of woven cloth. The fascia, steering-wheel spoke and door
uppers are dressed in tactile Open Pore White Wood veneer, complemented by Black Wood to the centre console lids.
TAILORED TO THE LAST DETAIL Bespoke Illuminated Treadplates that feature the same design as the hidden embroidery are fitted to all four door sills. Above them, stored within the motor car, are bespoke umbrellas with canopies in Navy Blue, beading in Selby Grey and handles in Arctic White, which complete Ghost Savile Row. A motor car tailored, quite literally, to measure. rolls-roycemotorcars.com/en_GB onsavilerow.com

THE FINEST SCHOOLS IN THE UK
EDUC ATION
FROM CLASSROOM TO CAREER:
A
Who Gets Ahead?
cross many of Britain’s leading professions, people educated in the private sector continue to be overrepresented in senior and decisionmaking roles. Recent research and ongoing public debate suggest that, despite progress in widening participation, educational background remains a powerful factor in shaping career trajectories across public life, business and the professions. This pattern is particularly visible in areas such as politics, the judiciary and the armed forces, where senior leadership roles are more commonly held by those who attended independent schools. Similar trends can be seen in medicine, the civil service and the media, where private and selective educational pathways continue to feature prominently among those at the top. In the corporate sector, many leaders of major British companies progressed through fee-paying schools and highly selective universities. The creative industries also reflect this imbalance, with a significant number of successful actors and performers having come through independent education, prompting wider discussion about access, representation and opportunity. Supporters of independent education argue that its influence extends beyond academic results. Greater emphasis on confidence, communication, leadership and extracurricular engagement can 60 SEPTEMBER 2026
“The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools”
play an important role in preparing young people for competitive environments. Strong networks and exposure to wider opportunities are also often cited as contributing factors. At the same time, educators and policymakers continue to question how these advantages can be more evenly distributed. Improving access to high-quality teaching, enrichment activities and personal development opportunities across all school types remains a central challenge for the education system. As conversations around social mobility and fairness continue, education remains at the heart of the debate. Understanding how different educational experiences shape outcomes is essential to creating a system that allows talent to flourish, regardless of background - and ensures that leadership across British society reflects the full breadth of ability within it.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT SCHOOL:
C
Look Beyond the Prospectus
hoosing a school is one of the biggest decisions a family will make, and with so many options available, it can be difficult to know where to begin. From independent day schools and traditional boarding schools to schools offering alternative approaches to learning, finding the right fit is about much more than league tables and glossy prospectuses. Every child is different, so the school that suits one pupil perfectly may not necessarily be right for another. Academic results are naturally important, but parents should also consider the wider school environment. Does the school offer a good balance between academic challenge, creativity, sport and pastoral care? Are there opportunities for pupils to discover interests outside the classroom? Visiting a school can be particularly valuable. Open days provide an opportunity to see the facilities, meet teachers and pupils, and get a feel for the atmosphere. Try to look beyond the polished presentation and consider whether the pupils seem happy, confident and engaged. For older children, involving them in visits can also help them develop a sense of ownership over the decision. For families considering boarding, there are
64 SEPTEMBER 2026
“Visiting a school can be particularly valuable. Open days provide an opportunity to see the facilities, meet teachers and pupils, and get a feel for the atmosphere”
additional factors to explore. Ask about the balance between boarding and day pupils, weekend activities, pastoral support and how often pupils can return home. A welcoming house environment and strong relationships between pupils and staff can make a significant difference to a child’s experience. Location and practicalities matter too. A school may seem ideal on paper, but a long daily journey could become tiring, while boarding may offer a practical alternative for some families. Consider transport arrangements, term dates, wraparound care and the overall cost, including extras such as trips, activities and equipment. Perhaps most importantly, think about your child rather than simply choosing the school with the strongest reputation. A highly competitive environment can be motivating for one pupil but overwhelming for another. Equally, a smaller school may provide the individual attention a child needs to thrive. The best school choice is ultimately one where a child feels supported, challenged and able to be themselves. Taking time to visit, ask questions and consider the whole experience – not just the headline results – can help families make a confident and informed decision.

More Than Just the Classroom The Benefits of a Private Education
W
ith choices ranging from traditional boarding schools to progressive alternative curricula, there is likely to be a private school to match almost every child’s needs and personality. Parents choose private education for a variety of reasons, from academic opportunities and specialist teaching to community values, and for many families it is considered a valuable longterm investment in their child’s education and development. Enhanced academic opportunities One of the key advantages associated with private schools is the opportunity to access a challenging and varied educational experience. Many schools offer advanced courses, internationally recognised programmes and a broad selection of extracurricular learning opportunities. These are designed not only to improve academic achievement but also to develop critical thinking, 68 SEPTEMBER 2026
creativity, confidence and independence. The depth and breadth of study can also help prepare pupils effectively for further education and future academic challenges. Smaller class sizes Private schools often place considerable importance on maintaining smaller class sizes. With fewer pupils in each classroom, teachers can provide more individual attention and identify areas where a student may need additional support. At the same time, pupils who are excelling can be encouraged to take their learning further. This more personalised approach can promote greater engagement, stronger understanding and a classroom environment that responds more closely to individual needs. Dedicated teachers Teachers at private schools are often highly qualified, experienced and passionate about their

subjects. Many bring specialist knowledge or additional training to their teaching, combined with a strong commitment to helping pupils achieve their potential. In smaller school communities, teachers may also be more accessible to students and can become important mentors and role models. Smaller classes provide further opportunities for teachers to offer additional guidance or introduce more challenging work when appropriate. Strong parental involvement Communication between families and schools is often an important part of private education. Parents may be encouraged to participate through regular meetings, school events, volunteering and other community initiatives. Being actively involved can help parents feel more connected to their child’s education and create a stronger partnership between home and school. This collaborative approach can also give families a clearer understanding of their child’s progress, interests and achievements. A supportive environment Private schools generally have clear expectations surrounding behaviour, respect and personal responsibility. Smaller staff-to-student ratios can make it easier for staff to monitor pupils, identify concerns and respond to problems at an early stage. A close-knit school community can also encourage positive relationships and mutual respect, helping to create an environment where students feel comfortable, supported and able to concentrate on their learning. Excellent resources Many private schools make significant investments in facilities and resources designed to enhance the educational experience. Well-equipped classrooms, libraries, science laboratories, sports facilities, art spaces and technology can give students opportunities to explore different subjects and interests. Access to these resources can help pupils discover their strengths, develop new skills and pursue activities that might not otherwise be available to them. Extracurricular activities Although academic achievement remains important, private schools frequently recognise 70 SEPTEMBER 2026

the value of providing a well-rounded education. Pupils may have opportunities to take part in sports, music, drama, visual arts, clubs and other activities. Beyond being enjoyable, these experiences can help develop teamwork, leadership, creativity, communication and social skills. They also provide a valuable balance to classroom-based learning and give students the chance to build confidence in different settings. Preparing students for the future Private schools can offer opportunities that extend beyond standard curriculum requirements, with specialist programmes in subjects such as mathematics, science, the arts and athletics. Their flexibility can allow them to respond to changes in technology, education and wider society, helping students prepare for a variety of future opportunities. Families may also choose private education because of the tailored support available for children with particular learning needs, with individual approaches designed to help each pupil make the most of their abilities.

WHAT DOCTOR-LED REALLY MEANS !
A
t The Cosmetic Doctors Company, the emphasis is firmly on clarity: patients should always understand who is assessing them, who is carrying out their treatment and who is responsible for their care. The term “doctor-led” is increasingly used across the aesthetics industry, often suggesting a higher level of medical oversight. Yet it is not a formally regulated description, and its meaning can vary considerably. A clinic described as doctor-led may be owned by a doctor, have medical oversight in the background, offer remote supervision, or have doctors carrying out every consultation and treatment. For patients, these distinctions matter. Aesthetic treatments are medical procedures, requiring an understanding of anatomy, careful assessment, clinical judgement and the ability to recognise and manage complications. The terminology used by a clinic does not necessarily tell patients who will actually perform their treatment or what their professional background is. 78 SEPTEMBER 2026
This is where The Cosmetic Doctors Company, based in Esher, has chosen a clear and consistent approach. Every consultation and every treatment is carried out by one of its experienced, medically qualified doctors. The doctor assesses each patient’s individual needs, discusses appropriate options and remains responsible for their care throughout. This continuity provides an important level of reassurance. Rather than relying solely on the phrase “doctor-led”, patients are encouraged to ask practical questions: Who will I see for my consultation? Who will perform my treatment? What are their qualifications and training? Who will be responsible for my care afterwards? Such questions can provide far greater clarity than terminology alone. As the world of aesthetic medicine continues to evolve, practitioners from a range of professional backgrounds now offer treatments, while terms such as “medical aesthetics” are widely used. For patients, understanding the person behind the treatment has therefore never been more important. The Cosmetic Doctors Company believes that transparency should be straightforward. Patients should know exactly who is treating them, understand the decisions being made about their care and feel confident that their treatment is being delivered by medically qualified professionals. Because when it comes to aesthetic medicine, clarity is more than reassuring—it is essential. The Cosmetic Doctors Company, 6 Esher Park Avenue, Esher, Surrey KT10 9NP. V&A & Burberry Announce
The Burberry Trench: Crafting an Icon 21 September 2026 – 3 January 2027 Prince Consort Gallery, V&A
V
&A and Burberry presents ‘The Burberry Trench: Crafting an Icon’ – a free display at V&A South Kensington celebrating a fashion staple that has adapted and endured through the decades, marking Burberry’s 170th anniversary. Bringing together rare material from the Burberry Archive and the V&A collection, the display traces the history of the Burberry trench from its origins as practical outerwear and military attire to a world-renowned icon of fashion, rooted in a contemporary British sensibility and celebrated globally. Located in the museum’s rarely seen Prince Consort Gallery, which once held fabrics from the textile collection in its mahogany cabinets, it offers a snapshot of the history of Burberry, a house that epitomises timeless British luxury. 80 SEPTEMBER 2026
Beginning with ‘Invention’, the display explores Thomas Burberry’s invention of cotton gabardine in 1879 and how its use in the Burberry trench established the coat as a sought-after piece of protective outerwear, combining function and style. It highlights the trench’s evolution into a design classic that has remained relevant for more than a century. Unpicking the carefully crafted elements that make up the Burberry trench, the focus on ‘Craft’ will highlight details such as the handfinished collar and distinctive House Check lining, the storm flap and detachable throat latch, all of which provide protection when the weather turns. The display concludes with ‘Creativity’, spotlighting 19 standout runway looks from the past two and a half decades, including designs by Chief Creative Officers Daniel Lee and

It will also trace the long standing relationship between Burberry and the V&A, two pillars of British fashion that share a commitment to ensuring their heritage and collections inspire the next generation of creatives. Oriole Cullen, Senior Curator, Fashion and Textiles at the V&A, said: ‘In advance of the V&A and Burberry partnership on the forthcoming Fashion Gallery, we are delighted to work with the Burberry Archive to showcase the history of the celebrated trench coat: a British fashion staple that has stood the test of time and continues to evolve over a century on.’ Carly Eck, Brand Curator, Burberry, said: ‘As we mark 170 years of the house, we are thrilled to partner with the V&A to celebrate the enduring legacy of the Burberry trench coat – a global design icon rooted in British craftsmanship and a symbol of innovation, creativity and timeless style. A myriad of objects from the brand’s Archive will be publicly exhibited for the first time – from early 20th-century catalogues to a Burberry trench coat

AMORÉ wasn’t born from a business plan. It was born during a season of life when Kaya Boyce, a Lithuanianborn makeup artist based in Leeds, barely recognised herself. After her son Harvey was born in November 2021, everything shifted. She was surviving on broken sleep, hormonal changes and a body that no longer felt like hers. For more than a decade she’d worked as a makeup artist on weddings, editorial shoots and photoshoots, helping women feel confident in their own skin. Yet every evening she reached for whatever felt comfortable and gradually stopped feeling like herself in what she wore at home. The pyjamas she owned had become an afterthought. Synthetic, oversized and uninspiring. She wanted something soft against the skin, elegant enough to feel put together on ordinary days, and breathable enough for the way her body ran hot at night. She couldn’t find it. So she took a pencil and started sketching.
86 SEPTEMBER 2026
After more than two years of fabric sourcing, sample development and fit refinement, HAMORÉ launched in 2026 with a carefully curated collection of bamboo nightwear and loungewear designed to move with the bodies women actually live in. Every piece is designed to be worn far beyond bedtime - from slow mornings at home to the school run, long-haul flights and summer holidays. Introducing the Collection The first HAMORÉ collection includes timeless bamboo sleepwear and loungewear in two versatile shades: Cannoli Cream and Cocoa Brown. Crafted from luxuriously soft 240 GSM OEKO-TEX® certified bamboo, each piece is designed to feel breathable, elegant and effortless to wear from morning to night. The collection includes a wrap robe, wide leg trousers, slim leg trousers, a V-neck top, a boat neck top and a relaxed dress. Every piece is designed to mix and match, creating a capsule wardrobe that moves effortlessly from slow mornings at home to weekends away and summer holidays. Why your matcha is only as good as your water Swedish water filtration brand Tappwater partners with premium matcha specialists Matcha Botanicals to highlight the importance of filtered water for a quality cup of matcha
M
atcha has become the wellness drink of choice for millions, loved for its earthy flavour, vibrant green colour and naturally occurring antioxidants. On TikTok alone, the #matcha hashtag has attracted more than five million posts, while thousands of users share tutorials on how to perfect the drink at home. But while many consumers invest in ceremonial-grade matcha and traditional bamboo whisks, experts say they’re often overlooking the ingredient that makes up more than 98% of every cup: water. According to Magnus Jern, co-founder and water researcher at Swedish filtration brand Tappwater, the quality of the water used to prepare matcha has a significant impact on its flavour, texture and appearance. “People spend £30 or £40 on premium ceremonial-grade matcha but prepare it with unfiltered tap water without realising how much influence the water has,” says Magnus. “Reducing chlorine and other unwanted contaminants while maintaining a balanced mineral profile allows matcha’s naturally sweet, creamy and umami characteristics to shine.” The mineral balance, chlorine content and overall composition of water all influence the finished drink. Chlorine and impurities can mask matcha’s delicate flavours, while hard water may dull its smooth, creamy texture. Cleaner, filtered water also

helps preserve matcha’s vibrant emerald colour and creates a less bitter, more balanced finish. To highlight the importance of water quality, Tappwater has partnered with premium tea specialists Matcha Botanicals. The collaboration showcases how filtered, mineral-balanced water can elevate the matcha-making experience. Tappwater’s Countertop Reverse Osmosis SMR™ filtration system removes more than 100 contaminants, including chlorine, heavy metals, PFAS and microplastics, before restoring essential minerals such as calcium, magnesium and potassium. Unlike conventional reverse osmosis systems, it is designed to improve both purity and taste, while adjustable water temperatures make it ideal for preparing matcha at its optimal brewing temperature. tappwater.co/en-gb

How to choose the perfect armchair or lounge chair Your friends are all tracking their Strava data, every other item on the shelf is packed with protein, and another Pilates studio has just opened up on the high street. We’re undoubtedly in an era where movement is more encouraged than ever for the benefit of both our physical and mental health. Great. But as we spend more of our time moving, the time we spend relaxing becomes ever more sacred. Let’s face it: at times, we have to get off our feet. You’re probably sitting reading this right now. So why not do it in the most comfortable, stylish way possible?
98 SEPTEMBER 2026
W
hat you need is a lounge chair ... or is it an armchair? Actually, what is the difference? What material should you go for? Will it be right for the job? All questions we’re taking on in our all-encompassing guide that has everything covered (or uncovered, depending on preference) when deciding on your future lounge or armchair. Kick back, relax and let us do the rest. Don’t forget to come and try them for yourself at our showroom when you’re done reading. What to prioritise? - Both armchairs and lounge chairs are high-use pieces of furniture; they’re often in the living room, which means they’re a favourite of residents and guests alike. So, yes, they have to look good, but few pieces in your house need to be for repeated use by people of all shapes and sizes. Habits and hobbies. Prioritise two main things. What it is made of and how it was made. The rest is a matter of individual needs. Let’s break it down. 1) Materials: Look for seating solutions that make a point of using the
finest ingredients. The most durable timbers, like oak or ash, if you’re going for a Scandi look. High-grade leather for that modern warmth. While it sounds like stating the obvious, the better the quality of the materials, the better the experience. Next up, 2) Manufacturing: History is the key to your future furniture. Buy from brands that have been doing what they do for decades, if not longer. With lifetimes of experience behind their manufacturing process and time-tested, durable joinery you can trust to last. What is its intended function? - What you’ll be using your new chair for will play a huge part in your decision. Functionality dictates material, size, shape, placement and features you’ll need. The way we see it, armchairs should be comfortable enough that you can do anything for hours, while lounge chairs are comfortable enough that you could fall asleep for hours without doing anything. So, if you want a piece for a reading nook, or for watching a whole season of your favourite series, you’ll want an armchair that keeps you
upright, elevated and on task. Durable in material like leather and compact in size to fit in with the rest of the room. Contrastingly, make sure your lounge chair is reclining, softly upholstered in wool or velvet and go big; make it the main event. Not forgetting those of you looking for an occasional chair, you want light, mobile and a finish that will blend with the surrounding space- nothing too bold or eye-catching. Size and spacing - While the possibilities are endless in terms of the upholstery and style, one of the few things you cannot change while picking out new lounge seating is the size of the actual lounge. Spatial planning is a key consideration when narrowing down your options. Spare no detail when it comes to dimensions. Figure the footprint, seat height, and even the backrest to make sure it is the perfect fit. Ensure it doesn’t overwhelm the space and fits the rest of the setting. It should create a physical pathway throughout the room that allows people to circulate freely between sofa and seating. Leave room for accompanying side tables and account for unique parts of the architectural structure. TOP TIP: As with any furniture purchase, the chair must get to its intended destination in one piece (or at least several undamaged ones). Does it fit through all door frames? Will you need specialist delivery to a high floor? It is the sort of thing that really cannot be left to guesswork, so if you have any doubts, best to speak to a specialist or, at the very least, measure to the millimetre and provide those details when purchasing, especially with made-to-order items that cannot be returned. Icons to know: Now, while your choice will be entirely down to personal preference, sometimes it
helps to know the legends of design; after all, they have achieved that status for a reason. A mixture of their pioneering style, brand heritage, and incredible build quality makes them, in our eyes, front-runners for your consideration. Throughout furniture history, lounge chairs have been something of a symbolic representation for each of their specific design styles. Scandi interiors have Arne Jacobsen’s acclaimed Egg Chair, and Mid-century has the instantly recognisable Eames Lounge Chair, the historic Bauhaus has its Wassily Chair, and of course Italian modern has gentle giants like the Soriana by Cassina or the Camaleonda by B&B Italia. Where to buy: There is no better research than sampling different furniture options for yourself. Being embraced by the richness and warmth of a leather lounge chair, witnessing the majesty of an authentic Eames lounge chair in person, really gives you a feel for the investment you’re about to make. Emotions aside, trying a piece for the first time is almost infinitely better for customer satisfaction. Being able to make a decision based on personal comfort and visual preference almost guarantees long-term satisfaction. It is why our 25,000 sq ft physical space has been our crowning contribution to design in London for the last 30 years. A place where you can sample designs from across the interior spectrum. Visiting our showroom allows you access to the rarest designs and the latest in luxury. You can also look to purchase your new lounge seating with us online through our extensive collection of armchairs and lounge chairs in countless finishes and upholsteries. chaplins.co.uk

45 Years of Crafting Creativity
F
or 45 years, I have been designing and creating beautiful objects. Thirteen of those years were spent in Italy, an extraordinary and deeply instructive period that expanded my skills and fundamentally transformed my approach to creativity. Over the years, I have brought together a number of disciplines. Alongside traditional woodworking, I have developed skills in steelwork and sand casting, and more recently embraced CNC technology. Combining these skills has opened up exciting possibilities, allowing me to create increasingly dynamic and individual designs. For me, creativity is a process of constant refinement and redefinition. Every commission begins with the client. I meet them, talk with them and, most importantly, listen. I look at their home, interiors and personal style, absorbing the character of the space. Then I step away and allow the idea to develop naturally. I believe creativity cannot be forced. The concept has to arrive — sometimes quite suddenly — in my mind’s eye, almost like an email appearing in your inbox. Once I can see the design clearly, however complex, I know I can find a way to create it. Collaboration with my clients is an important part of this process. Where they wish to be
100 SEPTEMBER 2026
involved, I encourage that interaction, with the aim of creating something they understand, connect with and, ultimately, love. My goal is always to deliver a piece that exceeds their expectations.
THE LIFE WITHIN THE CRAFT I firmly believe there is something special about an object that has been genuinely handcrafted and hand-finished. The involvement of a skilled craftsman gives a piece its own character and brings it to life in a way that machine production cannot replicate. When a piece leaves my workshop and enters a client’s home, it brings more than its physical presence. It introduces a new dynamic — an energy and individuality that can transform a space. After 45 years, I am still fascinated by that moment when an idea becomes something tangible. The combination of imagination, craftsmanship and modern technology continues to inspire me. For anyone looking to introduce something truly individual into their home, I would be delighted to meet and discuss a commission. Simple Lighting Updates to Transform Your Home James Kendall of KES Lighting & Home shares affordable ways to refresh your space, from swapping fixtures and bulbs to creating a more layered lighting scheme. Highlight a feature with accent lighting Accent lighting is a simple but highly effective way to add depth and interest to a room. Using directional or adjustable lights allows you to draw attention to specific features such as open shelving, a decorative splashback, architectural details or a favourite piece of artwork. This technique is often used by interior designers to give a space a more layered and curated appearance. Adding subtle lighting to highlight these elements can make the room feel more thoughtfully designed without requiring any major structural changes. Even small additions, such as under cabinet lighting in the kitchen or a spotlight positioned to illuminate a statement object, can make a noticeable difference. Switch out your fixtures One of the easiest ways to update a room is by upgrading your light fixtures. Over time, fittings can begin to look dated and swapping them for a more contemporary design can instantly modernise the space. Replacing an old pendant with a striking statement light above a dining table or kitchen island can dramatically change the character of the room and create a new focal point. Similarly, adding elegant wall lights can introduce an extra layer of lighting while also bringing a decorative element to the space. With so many styles available, from sleek modern finishes to classic designs in brass or glass, simply changing your fixtures can provide a quick yet impactful refresh. Change your bulbs Sometimes the smallest adjustments make the biggest difference. Switching to warm tone bulbs is one of the simplest ways to improve the atmosphere in your home. Many homes still use cooler white lighting, which can feel harsh and clinical, particularly in living spaces. Warm white bulbs create a softer, more welcoming glow that enhances natural materials and textures such as wood, stone and fabrics. This subtle change can instantly make living rooms, bedrooms and dining areas feel more comfortable and inviting, helping to create a relaxed environment that feels better suited to everyday living. 104 SEPTEMBER 2026
Add stylish table lamps Table lamps are another quick and affordable way to refresh a room while also improving its lighting balance. Layered lighting is key to creating a comfortable and flexible space, and table lamps provide softer pools of light that help break up overhead lighting. Symmetry can also play an important role in creating a sense of harmony within a room. A matching pair of table lamps placed on bedside tables, a console table or a sideboard instantly creates a polished and cohesive look. This approach works particularly well in bedrooms and living rooms, where softer lighting helps establish a calm and relaxed atmosphere. keslighting.co.uk

Full of Character Why Texture is the Key to Creating Characterful Interiors
C
olour has always played a defining role in how we decorate our homes, but today’s most stylish interiors are looking beyond colour alone. Homeowners and designers are increasingly using texture, tactility and layered fabrics to create homes brimming with personality. Rather than replacing colour, texture is changing the way we use it. Today’s most successful interiors are not necessarily built around matching shades, but around combinations of colour, pattern and fabric that tell a story. From richly woven fabrics and tactile velvets to embroidered details, heritageinspired patterns and layered textiles, texture is becoming one of the defining elements that brings an interior scheme together. The decorating conversation has shifted. Rather than simply asking, “What colour should I paint this room?”, homeowners are increasingly asking, “How do I want this room to feel?” Texture has become one of the most effective ways to answer that question, helping create everything from cosy, cocooning spaces and relaxed Scandinavianinspired interiors to richly layered, nostalgic schemes full of personality. This renewed appreciation for texture comes at a time when interiors are becoming increasingly

expressive. The popularity of ‘Granny Chic’, heritage-inspired decorating and the revival of 1980s influences all reflect a growing desire for homes that feel loved and full of character. After years of pared-back minimalism, homeowners are rediscovering the joy of decorating with rich colours, layered patterns, vintage influences and tactile fabrics. As Debbie Leigh, Design Manager at ILIV explains, “People are becoming much more confident in the way they decorate. They’re mixing colour with pattern, vintage finds with contemporary pieces, and layering different fabrics to give their rooms a sense of individuality. Texture helps bring all of those elements together and transforms a room from looking beautiful to feeling like home.” iliv.co.uk

ECLISSE ARCHITECTURAL DOOR FRAME SPECIALISTS
B
eautiful interiors are often defined by what you don’t see. Clean lines, considered proportions and clever use of space can transform the way a home looks and feels – and doors have an important part to play. ECLISSE designs door systems that allow architects, interior designers and homeowners to think beyond the traditional hinged door. Their pocket door systems slide neatly into the wall, removing the swing area of a door and freeing up floor and wall space. In compact London homes, that can create more flexible layouts, improve flow between rooms and make furniture placement far easier. For a more architectural finish, the ECLISSE Syntesis Flush Collection takes minimalism further. Flush pocket doors and concealed frame hinged doors are designed without visible jambs or architraves, allowing the door to sit seamlessly within the wall. Finished in the same colour or wallpaper as the surrounding surface, a door can

virtually disappear; alternatively, a contrasting finish can turn it into a striking design feature. The collection extends beyond doors. Syntesis Flush skirting creates a crisp, streamlined detail at floor level, while wiring-ready pocket door systems allow switches, sockets, thermostats and lighting controls to be positioned on the wall covering the pocket – helping designers achieve a practical layout without compromising the aesthetic. Glass pocket doors offer another way to shape an interior, bringing natural light deeper into a home while retaining the ability to divide spaces when needed. Single, double, telescopic and specialist systems provide solutions for everything from ensuites and utility rooms to open-plan living spaces, with fire-rated options also available where required. The result is more than a door. ECLISSE products become part of the architecture itself: helping spaces feel larger, calmer and more considered, while giving designers the freedom to make every line, surface and detail work harder.

GOING GREEN Green Becomes the Natural Choice for Calmer Homes
P
orcelain Superstore highlights rising interest in nature-led colours across kitchens, bathrooms and living spaces Grounding shades of green are emerging as one of the defining interiors trends of the moment, according to independent tile retailer Porcelain Superstore. Analysis of Pinterest search data by the familyrun tile specialist reveals growing interest in green-led decorating schemes, with searches for rooms inspired by the natural shade climbing over the past year. Leading the charge is ‘green living room’ searches, which are up by 200% over the last 12 months. Searches for the term ‘green tiled bathroom’ are up by 60% while ‘green kitchen ideas’ searches have climbed by 40%*. Abbas Youssefi, Founder of Porcelain Superstore, said: “Green has been building momentum in interiors for several years, but we are now seeing a clear shift towards earthier, more grounding shades. Homeowners are moving away from brighter, more energetic greens and embracing tones such as olive, moss, sage and
118 SEPTEMBER 2026
forest, which feel calmer, warmer and easier to live with. “These shades have a strong connection to nature, so they can make a room feel more settled and restorative. That is particularly appealing in busy homes, where people are increasingly looking for interiors that provide a sense of comfort and escape.” For those looking to commit to green, Abbas advises to start with a splashback, shower enclosure or feature wall. Using green in a contained area allows the colour to make an impact without overwhelming the room, while still bringing a calm, grounded feel to the space. What’s more, green pairs naturally with warm whites, timber and neutral finishes making it an easy colour to introduce into an existing interior scheme. For homeowners ready to fully embrace green, Abbas urges them to consider using it across a larger surface, such as a tiled floor or even an entire bathroom. Richer shades like forest, emerald and deep olive can create a cocooning, luxurious feel, particularly when paired with warm metals, natural wood and layered lighting. The key is to vary the tones and textures slightly, so the finished space feels considered and characterful rather than overly uniform. Abbas added: “Green has enough personality to make an impact, but its natural undertones mean it is unlikely to date quickly. The result feels characterful, calming and closely connected to the outdoors.” From porcelainsuperstore.co.uk

An Exclusive Gated Collection of New Homes

T
here is something particularly satisfying about giving an old building a new purpose. At The Courtyard in Wisley, a collection of former agricultural buildings has evolved once again, creating twelve individual homes while retaining the character and sense of place that have defined the site for generations. Originally a farmstead, The Courtyard was comprehensively refurbished around the turn of the century and converted into offices. For many years it became a familiar working environment in Wisley, with the National Trust among its principal occupiers. The buildings continued in office use until early 2024, when changing working patterns and reduced demand for rural office accommodation opened the possibility of another chapter in their history. In 2024, Igloo Developments acquired The Courtyard with a clear vision: to transform the existing barns and stable blocks into a small, distinctive residential community. Rather than sweeping away the past, the development has sought to work with the fabric and character of the buildings, adapting them sensitively for contemporary life. The result is an exclusive gated collection of

Private terraces, allocated parking and EV charging bring the practical requirements of modern living into this historic setting. For Igloo Developments, a well-established local developer, The Courtyard represents the kind of project where thoughtful development can make a genuine contribution to its surroundings. It is not simply about creating new homes, but about recognising the value already present in an existing building and finding a sustainable future for it. From farmstead to offices and now to homes, The Courtyard has continually adapted to the needs of its time. There’s Something Magical About
Queenbee Gardens There is a little magic in finding a place that feels like home.
S
ometimes it is there the moment you open the door. Sometimes it reveals itself slowly – in the way morning light fills a room, a beautifully considered detail, or the first glimpse of a garden beyond an open window. On 26th September, in a leafy corner of Weybridge, walking distance to shops and restaurants, the doors will open to three very special new homes. Each home is as individual as their names: Aster, Chamerion and Monarda – three flowers loved by bees and the inspiration behind the name, Queenbee Gardens. But the names are only the beginning of the story. Because at Queenbee Gardens, it is the little details that create the magic. Aster, the show home, is perhaps where that magic is most apparent, filled with thoughtful little details that make it feel truly enchanting. The garden designers were given a simple brief: create a garden that feels like an extension of the home rather than simply something beautiful to look at – a secret garden in which to while away the hours. Gardens in which to entertain, play and simply be. Summer lunches that linger into the evening. Friends around the table. Quiet Sunday mornings.
