Set within Discovery Land, a 40-acre Outdoor Adventure Play Trail on the Priory Farm Estate, in Nutfield, Surrey, the experience offers a unique outdoor setting where families can explore nature through play, storytelling and adventure. This Autumn, New Ashgate Gallery celebrates the richness of Surrey’s creative community with the return of Surrey Artist of the Year 2026, an award that has championed local artistic talent since 2009. Running from 12 September to 7 November, the exhibition showcases an inspiring shortlist of 18 finalists, inviting visitors to discover exceptional contemporary art before casting their vote for the county’s next Artist of the Year. Mayfield Lavender Farm, the stunning Surrey destination reopened last month with a host of new experiences as well as perennial favourites. Marking its 20th anniversary of opening to the public this year, Mayfield Lavender will feature activities inspired by the themes of renewal. BROOKLANDS GEARS UP FOR SUMMER FLY-IN

he skies above Brooklands Museum will come alive this summer as a spectacular gathering of helicopters as they swoop in for a special all-helicopter Fly-In. On Thursday 20 August, visitors will be able to watch the many varieties of helicopters arrive at the historic Brooklands site before getting the chance to see the aircraft up close on the ground. From the distinctive sound of rotor blades approaching overhead to the excitement of watching the helicopters touch down, the event promises a thrilling day for families, aviation enthusiasts and photographers alike. The action begins from 10am as helicopters arrive and land on the neighbouring airstrip at Mercedes-Benz World. Between 12noon and 2pm, visitors will be able to access the airstrip to view and photograph the aircraft at close quarters, before the helicopters take to the skies again from 2.30-3.30pm. Ranging from compact two-seat training helicopters to military, executive and highperformance types. Among the stars of the day will be two Gazelles - the distinctive light helicopter with a long military history - alongside an EC135 military helicopter and an Airbus H125 Squirrel, a powerful and versatile machine used around the world. Visitors will also be able to see a new Bell 505 and the famous Jet Ranger, one of the most recognisable helicopter designs of all time, as well as the MD500E and MD530F, both known as the

‘Ferrari’ of helicopters. It will be a rare opportunity to experience helicopters from a completely different perspective - not simply as distant shapes in the sky, but close enough to appreciate their scale, engineering and extraordinary design. Public Voting Opens at New Ashgate Gallery

his autumn, New Ashgate Gallery celebrates the richness of Surrey’s creative community with the return of Surrey Artist of the Year 2026, an award that has championed local artistic talent since 2009. Running from 12 September to 7 November, the exhibition showcases an inspiring shortlist of 18 finalists, inviting visitors to discover exceptional contemporary art before casting their vote for the county’s next Artist of the Year. Delivered in partnership with Surrey Artists Open Studios (SAOS), the award has become one of Surrey’s most significant visual arts initiatives, providing artists with valuable exposure, opportunities to connect with collectors and audiences, and professional development through exhibition and community engagement. Voting opens during the exhibition’s private view on Friday 11 September (6–8 pm) and continues at the gallery until Tuesday 13 October at 12 noon, giving visitors the opportunity to help choose this year’s winner. The successful artist will be announced at a public award ceremony on Friday 23 October (6.30–7.30 pm). The winner will receive a £2,000 bursary towards a solo exhibition at New Ashgate Gallery, alongside support for community workshop

urrey Craft Legacies is a heritage craft exhibition celebrating traditional and endangered craft skills in Farnham, England’s first World Craft Town. It brings together historic stained-glass windowmaking, silk weaving, rush work, brush-making, and encaustic tile-making with jewellery, woodturning, tapestry, studio glass, and other skilled contemporary crafts. Across the UK, traditional craft skills once central to daily life are quietly disappearing. Some now survive through only a small number of practitioners. Surrey Craft Legacies, led by New Ashgate Gallery, records these skills, shares them with new audiences and supports their continuation. The exhibition brings together work by skilled craftspeople from across the UK who have shared their knowledge in Farnham and Surrey. Their work is shown alongside oral history films and

handmade objects created through community workshops. The films will be on show in the Gallery during the exhibition. Featured makers include Adam Aaronson, Lydia Asscher, Jill Billings, Jane Browne, Caroline Egleston, Rosa Harradine, Sheila McDonald, Ella Merriman, Rachel Mulligan, Casandra Ponta, Fiona Rutherford, Martin Saban-Smith, Jessica Stroud, Jonathan Waights, Carolyn Wallis, Rae Weaver, Rosie Wesley and Anne Wolf. The heritage skills outreach workshops took place in spring with community partners including Farnham Library, Hale Community Centre, DAiSY (Disability Arts in Surrey) and Farnham Assist. Some of the work made by participants during Jane Browne’s community workshop at Farnham Library will be shown in the exhibition, bringing local learning into the public display. Together, the exhibition, films and workshop objects show how craft traditions are learned, adapted and passed on. They reveal the knowledge held in materials, tools and hand skills, and show heritage crafts as living practices shaped by makers and communities today. Dr Outi Remes, Director of New Ashgate Gallery, said: “These are highly skilled practices built over generations, yet some are now at serious risk. If they are not actively passed on, they will be lost. This project records that knowledge and makes it accessible, while giving new people the chance to learn directly from experienced makers. The response from participants already shows how much these skills matter. Why the Female Knee Deserves Its Own Science

woman’s knee is not merely a smaller version of a man’s. It has distinct anatomy, works differently, and deserves care based on its own biology. Those differences are significant. A wider pelvis changes the angle at which the thigh meets the knee, altering how force is distributed through the joint. The groove that houses the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)—the crucial stabiliser of the knee—is often narrower, while movement patterns during jumping, pivoting and landing place unique demands on the joint. Hormonal fluctuations throughout the menstrual cycle can also subtly influence ligament laxity. These are not weaknesses; they are characteristics of the female body. They do, however, help explain why women are considerably more likely to rupture the ACL than men, with some studies suggesting the risk may be up to eight times greater. Yet despite this disparity, much of the evidence guiding treatment has historically been based on male patients, with the assumption that the findings translate equally well to women. It is a gap that Mr Khalid Al-Hourani, a UK knee surgeon who completed advanced sports surgery training in Boston (USA), encounters regularly in his work with active women. Reviewing two decades of published research, he and his colleagues found remarkably few high-quality 66 AUGUST 2026

studies focused specifically on female patients. Those that did exist often used different measures of success, making meaningful comparison difficult. “The female knee deserves to be studied in its own right,” says Mr Al-Hourani. As more women embrace sport, fitness and active lifestyles well into later life, understanding the unique biomechanics of the female knee is no longer a niche concern—it’s an essential step towards more personalised care, better outcomes and a future where women’s orthopaedic health is shaped by evidence designed for women, not adapted from men.

Head Size, Arm Position & LED Spacing and Lensing: These 3 dynamics work together to gain the best coverage across the canvas. Using a small head will need long arms and correctly lensed LEDs. Using a larger head, the arms can be shorter with different LED lensing. Arm sizes must be calculated to give the correct elevation & projection for the head size. Swivel knuckles should be present to gain the desired head angle to remove any glare. Lighting Levels: Each picture light should be supplied with its own dedicated dimmer to ensure correct levels are achieved. Over lighting can be just as bad as under lighting, and a painting’s ideal light level will depend on its content, colours and brush strokes.
