New ‘All Inclusive’

Nursing Home Opens In Surrey A new private nursing home has opened in Mytchett that offers 24-hour resident nursing and respite care on an ‘all inclusive’ basis.

K

ingsmead House Care Home, in Mytchett Road, has been designed and built over three floors to an exceptionally high standard with large communal lounges and beautiful landscaped courtyard gardens. But unlike many other care homes in the UK, residents at Kingsmead House are able to access all the care home’s facilities without any additional charges. This means that meals, entertainment and activities are all covered by the weekly fees.

So whether it is a glass of wine with dinner, a shopping trip in our chauffeur driven car or a beauty treatment, it’s all included in our weekly costs Kingsmead House Care Home home manager Karen Temple, who has 34 years of experience in nursing, said: “We know that when embarking on the search for a new home, you need to plan for the future with all of the money facts in place which is why we provide our services on an all-inclusive basis. So whether it is a glass of wine with dinner, a shopping trip in our chauffeur driven car or a beauty treatment, it’s all included in our weekly costs. “We want all our residents to be able to access the facilities, activities and luxuries available at Kingsmead House equally, without fear of hidden costs. As well as providing our residents with equality, it also gives their family peace of mind that everything is covered.” Kingsmead House Care Home’s facilities include a hair salon, piano bar/café with Wifi, a putting green, a library and there is even a chauffeur-driven Mercedes available 22 AUGUST 2015

to take residents for shopping trips into town. There is an on-site chef, concierge, laundry services, daily newspapers provided and more. The care home has 40 bedroom suites with en-suite facilities and specialist equipment such as nurse call systems and temperature-controlled central heating. Rooms are spacious enough for residents to entertain guests and personalise. They can even bring in their own furniture, pictures and personal ornaments to make their room a home from home. Kingsmead House Care Home adopts an ‘open door’ policy at the home so friends and family can visit their loved ones at any time. The home is equipped to provide nursing support for elderly people living with multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, tracheostomy’s and end of life care. Mrs Temple, who has worked for the NHS and Bupa, added: “Our residents enjoy a very personal standard of care delivered by our dedicated members of staff. At Kingsmead House Care Home, we are ‘one family’ helping other families in their time of need and our mission is to deliver the finest personal resident care. “We work closely with the families of our residents so we can ensure their every need is catered for and they feel welcome and cared for from the moment they arrive.” THE DETAILS Kingsmead House Care Home Mytchett Road, Camberley, Surrey GU16 6AE ••••• www.kingsmeadhouse.com 01252 549 339. THE SPIRIT OF THE

SILENT POOL How do you bottle the spirit of a magical landscape? The alchemy involves chalk-filtered Silent Pool spring water, an inspired selection of botanicals and a glorious tangle of spiralling copper pipes and giant cauldrons

Denmark, Italy, Sweden, France, the Philippines and China. The Team are passionate about Silent Pool Gin and welcome visitors to the distillery every day from 10am4.30pm and are now taking bookings for their more intensive 90 minute deep dive Gin Experience. The creative spirit behind the gin is Master Distiller Cory Mason, who buzzes with new ideas: Albury Limited Release Alcoholic Cordials are already in production. The strawberry cordial, available locally and at farmer’s markets, tastes beautiful. Peach, rose, elderflower and cardamom are coming soon.

A

nd the result – a spirit that barely three months after its launch has taken on the world and created waves. Silent Pool Gin has just won its first Awards in the prestigious International Wine and Spirit Competitions, with Silver for Contemporary Gin, Gold for Gin and Tonic and Silver for Packaging. It was selected for the maiden voyage of the P & O Flagship and for tastings for first class Eurostar passengers and is on its way to securing a global market. Mysterious and timeless, the Silent Pool itself nestles like a silvery secret among overhanging trees beneath the North Downs at Albury. The atmosphere is magical, as if King John could any moment appear on the bank in his legendary pursuit of the chaste maiden. Capturing that spirit of place has been the inspiration behind the gin. Surrey’s premier artisan distillery occupies old farm buildings overlooking the pool. From the hewing of the logs to fuel the boiler, a 1970s Barford Invicta Major allegedly rescued from Liverpool Docks, to the selection of flowers, herbs, fruit and spices for the still, right through to bottling in stunning teal coloured glass embossed in copper, this is a totally hand-made spirit. Silent Pool Gin’s fame is spreading fast throughout Surrey since founder Ian McCulloch and resident distiller Tom Hutchings set up their stall in local farmer’s markets. On the international stage there is export interest from Holland,

Be Sensible

Fun in the sun is great but imagine what it’s doing to your skin. The more sun you get the deeper your wrinkles and more mottled your skin becomes. Therefore the very best in skincare is needed. Use products that are lightweight and give a breathable barrier to the skin. Look for ingredients like natural melanin, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide - all provide a broad spectrum of UVA/UVB protection. Also use overnight creams with retinol to encourage calming and repair to the skin.

Dr Forrester recommends:

“I

finds a fuller flutter with a product that bridges the gap between mascara and falsies

’m a huge fan of false eyelashes, but without the time and patience to have them applied professionally, I was tempted to try what’s been dubbed the next best thing. “A mascara and lash builder, Santhilea Magnetic Lash promises black velvet-like lashes in three steps. After curling, step one is to apply the mascara. Then, while still wet - this is the tricky bit, as you have to be quick - step two is to apply the lash builder.

“Using a small wand, packed with tiny fibres, it goes on a bit like candyfloss, the furry fibres clinging to the wet lashes. It’s tempting to keep applying more, but the trick is to hold back and apply carefully and evenly. While waiting for the lash builder to dry, which takes a couple of minutes, I used a cotton bud to gently wipe away any fibres that have fallen onto my skin. “The final step is to reapply a generous amount of mascara to seal the fibres - the results are

dramatic and my lashes are doubled in size. The effect lasts well through the day, too, and I’m impressed that my lashes don’t look clumpy when I top up with a fresh coat of mascara before heading out in the evening. “As for taking it all off, my usual make-up remover did the trick and, best of all, there’s none of the icky glue residue you get with falsies. I’m converted.” Santhilea Magnetic Lash Mascara is £25 (www.selfridges.com)

ProSkin Summer Body Blitz! It’s that time of year when the hemlines are shorter and more skin is on show. Whether you want to lose inches or tackle cellulite; 3D lipo could be the solution to all of your body contouring needs!

J

ust like the name suggests, 3D lipo takes a truly three dimensional approach to weight loss and body sculpting. The treatment encompasses a range of individual, but complementary technologies, which work together to permanently remove stubborn fat, reduce the appearance of cellulite and tighten the skin, without the need for exercise. The treatments can be taken alone, or in combination, but all of them are non-invasive and offer immediate, yet long-term, results.

Cellulite Reduction

Cellulite reduction treatment, known as ‘Dermology,’ involves two complementary treatments, which are available individually or as part of a wider treatment programme. 3D Dermology involves rolling the skin with special rollers. During treatment, a vacuum roller applies firm, but comfortable, pressure to the treated area to stimulate blood flow. Vacuum suction then removes depleted fat cells through the lymphatic system and radio frequency treatment tightens the skin. Increased blood flow also increases the oxygen supply to the treated area, stimulating the regeneration of healthy, smooth skin. This type of treatment can be particularly beneficial to patients with naturally sluggish lymphatic systems.

Inch Loss

ProSkin Clinics use two techniques, known as ultrasound Cavitation and Cryolipolysis, to help you lose weight

and inches quickly. As the name suggests, ultrasound cavitation uses ultrasonic waves to break down fat cells, allowing their contents to be naturally removed from the body. Cryolipolysis, on the other hand, uses low temperatures, or cryotherapy, to freeze a percentage of the cells in the treated area in a controlled way to achieve the same effect. Both treatments are highly effective at removing fat from problem areas, such as the affectionately named, but undesirable ‘bingo wings’, ‘love handles’ or ‘muffin top, in comfort and safety.

Skin Tightening

The exposure of the skin to radio frequency waves creates a heating effect, which causes the fibres of protein, known as collagen, to contract. The heating effect also stimulates the growth of new collagen fibres, so the result is an immediate tightening effect. Radio frequency treatment is ideal for improving the appearance of sagging skin on the face, arms, stomach or thighs. THE DETAILS ProSkin Esher offer a number of excellent 3D Lipo Packages which are all available to view at www. proskinclinics.com. Don’t underestimate your holiday itinerary when it comes to finding the holy grail of swimsuits. While body shape is key, it’s what you’re doing in it that really counts. On-the-go thrill-seeker or human sundial, pick a bikini or one-piece that fits with your vacation mantra. By Lisa Haynes, Press Association

T

pool party

his season there are more silhouette variations than ever when it comes to swimwear, including flesh-covering options that look genuinely as sexy as their skimpy counterparts. Dive into our swimsuit guide - because life’s a beach when you find your perfect match.

THE SUN WORSHIPPER

You are the human sundial of holidaymakers - and proud of it. Tan lines are your nemesis, so a strapless bikini or swimsuit will always be your best friend when it comes to maximum exposure. If you’re smaller busted, a bandeau style is ideal and detailing, like frills or embellishment, can add curves. Those who need extra bust support can look for a cupped, underwired style - some even come in bra sizes. Avoid swimsuits with cut-out details at all costs, for an enviable all-over tan. TRY: Midnight Grace by Figleaves Jasmine Underwired Bandeau Tummy Control Swimsuit, £40 (figleaves.com); or Topshop Shirred Lemon Bandeau Set bikini, £34 (topshop.com)

THE WATER BABY

Forget paddling your toes, you’re forever in and out of the hotel pool doing serious lengths. If you’re the type

of holidaymaker that packs her swimming goggles first, look for a swimsuit with an athletic aesthetic. But practical doesn’t have to mean boring. You have the option of cool scuba style two-pieces or a slinky racer-back one-piece. A snug fit is essential if you’re going to be putting it through its paces in the water, and opt for high-cut briefs for a super-flattering, aerodynamic silhouette. TRY: Figleaves Tuscany Stripe Tummy Control Swimsuit, £35 (figleaves.com); or Very Samantha Faiers Zip Front Bikini Top, £20, and matching Colour Block Briefs, £16 (very.co.uk)

THE COCKTAIL TASTER

Your happy place? Perching on a stool familiarising yourself with the cocktail list, and being on first name terms with the staff in the local beach bar. It’s likely you’ll be in the shade, so a little more coverage is required. Think of your swimsuit as an extension of your outfit - a longline bikini bra top you can wear with a floaty high-waisted skirt, or a swimsuit that masquerades as a bodysuit. Take a sarong or kaftan in your beach bag that you can throw on as a dress or cover-up. TRY: White Stuff Hawaii Floral Swimsuit, £35 (whitestuff.com); or Sea by Melissa Odabash Sarong, £22 (jdwilliams.co.uk)

TOP 3 swimwear buys

If you just can’t help being centre of attention, you have two swimsuit options: a statement detail or eye-catching pattern. Take inspiration from the catwalks, with could-bedesigner prints, and if you want to be really standout this season, go for long sleeves. Bikinis resemble daytime coord sets with zip-up tops or surfer girl cropped rash guards, that show off your tummy and back but keep your arms fully covered. Ideal for days when you’re feeling the burn. TRY: Next Zig Zag Tassel Flute Swimwear: Dual Sized Bikini Top, £26, and matching Side Tie Briefs, £15 (next. co.uk); or Debenhams Butterfly by Matthew Williamson Tropical Floral Rash Vest, £32, and matching Bikini Bottoms, £18 (Debenhams.com)

roin and hip pain can be a source of frustration for young adults wanting to maintain fitness or even manage day-to-day activities. Patients generally present with groin pain provoked by twisting, or impact sports, which begins to restrict their ability to run, and can progress to affect walking and even sleeping. Hip arthroscopy is a means of assessing and treating patients using a minimally invasive ‘keyhole’ technique that enables a more rapid recovery and return to work. Where open surgery left patients unable to work for six weeks or more, hip arthroscopy enables us to treat patients as a day case admission with the expectation of a return to work in less than two weeks. The most common cause of groin pain is a labral tear which can be explored and resected or repaired with this technique. But hip arthroscopy can also address hip pathology such as impingement, osteochondral defects, loose bodies, psoas tendonitis and bursitis. Seb Sturridge and Jonathan Hull have an established arthroscopic hip surgery practice based at Joint Reaction,

Spire Clare Park Hospital Orthopaedic Centre of Excellence. Jonathan started arthroscoping hips over eighteen years ago, and Seb during his fellowship training five years ago, and between them they now operate on over 250 cases per year. Jonathan is a faculty member of the Smith & Nephew School of Arthroscopy based in York. At Spire Clare Park Hospital your hip can be accurately imaged with an MRI Arthrogram, the results discussed with you and a management plan made at the same appointment. long-term kitchen investment, grey allows metals such as gold, steel and even the new trend for rose gold to truly stand out and is a great colour palette from which to accessorise with a variety of bolder colours and patterns. The cool grey tones look great with wood or stainless steel. Extra warmth can be added by combining hot colours such as electric blue or burnt orange.” So, which shade of grey is your favourite?

Is it worth paying the premium for aluminium double glazing?

N

owadays UK homeowners have the choice of energy rated aluminium, composite, steel, timber or UPVC replacement windows. The vast majority of customers choose UPVC simply because it does the job and costs the least. Aluminium replacement casement windows on the other hand can be powder coated in any RAL colour, so offer property owners the opportunity to have all sorts of dual colour effects, such as say a “Mock Tudor” exterior with black outer frames and white sashes (or vice-versa) and internal frames to match the decor of the room. UPVC

76 AUGUST 2015

windows can in theory be sprayed in any RAL colour, but the long term quality of the finish is highly questionable, as painted UPVC is nowhere near as durable as powder coated aluminium, and has been known to fade after a period of time. Whilst aluminium is still available in a silver anodised finish, the vast majority of aluminium windows fabricated in the UK nowadays have a high quality, highly durable powder coated finish instead, plus today’s modern aluminium frames have a polyamide “thermal break”, preventing the formation of condensation on the internal

frames, which sometimes occurred on non-thermally aluminium fenestration products of old. Powder coated aluminium will not fade and will last longer than UPVC over a lifetime. Aluminium is 100% recyclable, so is extremely environmentally friendly, plus being a metal it offers even more security, flexibility and strength than UPVC. Most UK manufacturers should be able to offer customers aluminium windows in a single or dual colour finish, along with matching front doors, back doors, in-line sliding patio doors, French doors, plus sliding and folding doors in any RAL colour in matching profiles. In the case of independent aluminium double glazing manufacturers and installers Hazlemere Windows, all their bespoke casement double glazed windows can be manufactured to be either A, B or C rated, depending on each customers design and thermal requirements., as each aluminium casement window is individually made to order from scratch, so tailor made to each aperture All side opening vents can have easy clean/fire escape

dog-bolts and toughened safety glass to BS6206. High security external glazing beads prevent removal of sealed units/panels from the outside by unwanted intruders. The 24mm wide aluminium double glazed unit is 4mm/16mm/4mm, a combination of low iron outer float or toughened clear or obscure safety glass, a black Swiss V warm edge spacer bar, 90% Argon filled, and an inner soft coat float or toughened glass pane. This glazing specification achieves a centre-pane U Value of 1.2 W/ m2K. The combined U-Value of Hazlemere’s A rated aluminium double glazed windows 1.64 W/m2K. The bottom line is that aluminium profiles offer slimmer sight lines than UPVC profiles, so consequently there is a greater glass area, which delivers more light, solar gain and affords better aesthetics and external views. Unlike UPVC aluminium does not need steel reinforcing so can deliver larger windows, greater openings and wider conservatory roof spans. Also lower quality UPVC products can be prone to fade, especially if in direct

Hazlemere’ s aluminium frames are made from the finest extrusions and feature mechanically jointed corners hinges fitted, which is a requirement under England and Wales Building Regulations for all habitable rooms, especially bedrooms. All opening vents have a lockable night vent facility to allow for the flow of air on warm days whilst keeping the property under lock and key. Hazlemere’ s aluminium frames are made from the finest extrusions and feature mechanically jointed corners, with a choice of a) an attractive sculptured frame appearance or b) square contemporary frame inside and out. Most aluminium manufacturers should be able to offer a choice of aluminium profiles, colour and bead options. Some aluminium profiles also offer “hidden” locking systems, which are much more aesthetically pleasing when vents are in an open position. Hazlemere aluminium casement windows have a 75mm deep (front to back) thermally broken frame by a polyamide strip and a high security multi-locking locking system as standard. All their aluminium doors come with high security

sunlight, whereas powder coated aluminium will not fade, plus expands and contracts far less than UPVC. UPVC windows, doors and conservatories simply cannot offer the range of colour choices as standard that aluminium can, although UPVC as a more mass market product is often less expensive. Aluminium is a superior material, but does cost slightly more, so as with most consumer decisions - the choice is yours!
