A Creative Garden for all Seasons: Autumn Edition

The Riverhill Pumpkin Festival 17th October - 1st November.

e like to end our season on a high, and our annual Pumpkin festival perfectly combines the things we hold most dear at Riverhill... A chance to show-off our lovely Gardens. They have many moments of perfection throughout the season (With Bluebells in April, Rhododendrons in May and allium and peony season in June being amongst the very best). But Autumn is a wonderful time to be outside, especially when you get those sunny, blue-sky days, with a little nip in the air. We love the Walled Garden at any time of year, but we highly recommend taking a hot coffee to the Himalayan Hut and enjoying the turning leaves of the vines, forming a picture frame, as you look out at the fountains and autumnal borders, with their tall grasses catching the low sunlight. Make sure you take a wander to the Wood Garden to enjoy the gold, amber and reds from the Acers, stopping to kick up some leaves on the way obviously. Encouraging our littlest visitors to enjoy the outside. Our Pumpkin Hunt is a great way to get everyone out and enjoying the autumn air. Have fun finding them all whilst soaking up the beauty of the gardens.

Being Creative and making something unique for our visitors to enjoy, whilst getting to be creative themselves. We absolutely LOVE designing our cosy Pumpkin Grotto. Ruth is an absolute crafting powerhouse and likes to mix things up each year to keep it fresh. Expect lots of quirky details and fun touches. There is always so much to take in! Inside the Pumpkin Grotto you can take your time carving your own Pumpkin. We have Ashley and Penny, our resident Pumpkin carving experts, to help you with ideas and technique. We have all the tools and buckets for the innards (Which we compost). You can either bring your own Pumpkin with you (You will find pumpkin parking by the Ticket Office, it’s a good idea to pop yours in a recognisable bag. Unmissable Autumn Events with the National Trust Adam Frost headlines Autumn Festival at Emmetts Garden, ‘We’re Going on a Ghost Hunt’ at Chartwell and ‘From Garden to Pantry’ at Quebec House

ward-winning garden designer and broadcaster Adam Frost headlines Emmetts Garden’s biggest ever Autumn Festival. The month-long celebration features a weekend of talks, a makers market, live music, photography workshops, Halloween crafting, a guided walk, a family activity trail and half term children’s fairground rides (9 October–1 November). Adam Frost will be joined by horticulturist, author and presenter Frances Tophill as well as garden designer and presenter Danny Clarke, ‘The Black Gardener’ along with a programme of speakers exploring folklore, astronomy, medicinal mushrooms, psychoactive fungi, plant conservation and naturebased wellness (16–18 October, pre-book tickets). The festival kicks off with the Autumn Fair Makers Market (9–11 October), featuring craftspeople and local food and drinks producers selling products inspired by the season. This year’s bigger marquee includes more stallholders, and it’s free with 18 SEPTEMBER 2026

admission. Enjoy live music from local concert bands and woodfired pizza on the weekend. Explore the garden and take part in family activities as part of the ‘Fun-Gus Saves the Forest’ trail (9 October–1 November, £3 +admission, includes prize). The children’s fairground returns for half term (23 October–1 November). A wristband for £10 allows access to the carousel, swing boats and teacup rides all day, and a combined £12 ticket includes the Fun-Gus trail and prize (normal admission applies). The Royal Engineers Museum T

he Royal Engineers Museum is the world’s foremost museum of military engineering. Housed in our striking Grade II listed building in Gillingham, Kent, our internationally significant collection is a testament to the ingenuity, creativity and determination that have shaped both military history and the modern world. Wars are not won by courage alone. Victory is achieved through planning, innovation, logistics, perseverance and adaptation. This spirit of innovation is brought vividly to life in the Museum’s current War Winning Engineering exhibition. Drawing on original plans, artefacts and archival material, the exhibition explores the extraordinary story of the Mulberry Harbours, the temporary floating ports developed to support the D-Day landings in Normandy. The exhibition highlights the immense challenge facing Allied planners during the Second World War; how to land and sustain a vast invasion force without control of a major French port. The solution was audacious. Engineers designed

and constructed two artificial harbours, incorporating pioneering components such as Phoenix caissons, Whale roadways, Beetle pontoons and Bombardon breakwaters. Mulberry Harbours A & B and these other essential constructions were then towed across the channel toward their pivotal debarkation points at Omaha and Gold beaches respectively. These remarkable structures enabled millions of troops, vehicles and tonnes of materiel to enter mainland Europe, playing a critical role in the success of the Allied campaign. Thanks to a National Lottery Heritage Fund grant, thousands of wartime blueprints, models and engineering records are being conserved and digitised, resulting in unprecedented public access to one of Britain’s greatest engineering achievements. In celebrating these achievements, the Royal Engineers Museum reminds us that engineering is often history’s hidden force. The War Winning Engineering exhibition is not simply a look back at wartime innovation. It is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when imagination, expertise and determination coalesce to overcome the greatest of challenges. It’s Never Too Late to Try: Climbing at 40, 50 and Beyond A Sport That Grows With You One Rhino Boulder regular had never climbed before her first visit with a friend. She kept coming. Then she had a baby, and kept coming anyway, arriving regularly on weekday mornings with the pram in tow just to stay active. She wasn’t a particularly active person before she found the gym. Now she has a sport she genuinely loves and a community she looks forward to seeing, built entirely around a decision to try something new. Siobhan, another member, put it best in a fivestar review after her first session: “It was my first time. I love this place. It was my nephew’s 16th. I went off and had fun on my own at aged 45 years! Got to be willing to try.”

You’ll find members in their forties, fifties and sixties, some who have climbed for years, and plenty who only just started because someone convinced them to give it a go. Bouldering has a quiet advantage over most sports: it doesn’t ask how old you are or how fit you were last year. Routes are set for all levels over deep safety mats to a relatively low height, with no ropes or harnesses, so there is no steep learning curve and no intimidating kit list. The Case for Starting Later Climbing builds strength, balance, coordination and flexibility, all without the joint impact of running or the repetition of a gym machine circuit. It also happens to be a genuinely effective way to tone up as pulling and pushing your own body weight around a wall works your arms, back and core in a way few gym machines manage. It’s also a rare kind of exercise that demands your full attention. Working out the next move on a route leaves little room to think about anything else, which is exactly why so many members describe an hour on the wall as more of a reset than a workout. There’s also no ladder to climb and no one to compare yourself against. Progress is entirely personal, which makes it one of the more forgiving ways to get back into exercise, or to try something active for the first time, whatever your age.

For more than 50 years, generations of families have made the railway’s Santa Specials part of their Christmas tradition. Alongside a memorable journey through the winter countryside, every family receives a personal visit from Santa, who delivers named gifts to children at their seats, assisted by his team of elves. Families enjoy festive refreshments, a souvenir photo and rides on the traditional Gallopers. Bronze, Silver and Gold packages offer a range of festive treats and exclusive experiences. Who Gets a Say in Your Child’s Life?

The Law on Parental Responsibility, Explained By Judge & Priestley

f you’re a parent, you probably make decisions for your child every day without a second thought: which school they attend, which doctor they see, how they’re raised. But did you know that, in the eyes of the law, not everyone automatically has the right to make these decisions? The rights and responsibilities to make these decisions are called parental responsibility, and understanding who has it, and who doesn’t, matters more than most people realise. Mothers automatically hold parental responsibility from birth. Biological fathers acquire it too, but only if they were married to the mother when the child was born, or if they’re named on the birth certificate. For others, a devoted grandparent, a step-parent, or a same-sex partner who isn’t biologically related, acquiring these rights means taking legal steps, such as a parental responsibility agreement or having to make an application to the court. Once granted, parental responsibility is remarkably difficult to remove. It typically only ends when a

28 SEPTEMBER 2026

child turns 18, when the holder dies, or through adoption. Beyond that, only a court order can strip someone of it, and only where there are serious welfare concerns. But a landmark Court of Appeal ruling has reshaped this picture. In Re J, Re M and Re P 2026], a case in which Maria Conesa Gonzalez and the team at Judge & Priestley represented the appellant in Re P, and which is now being widely discussed across the legal profession, the court drew a crucial distinction. Rather than asking whether parental responsibility should be removed, the question in some cases is whether it ever legally existed in the first place. Where a man is not, in law, a child’s biological father, the court confirmed, parental responsibility simply never arose, shifting the focus firmly back to biological truth. It’s a ruling with far-reaching implications for families across the country, and one that underlines just how complex, and how personal, these legal questions can be.

ergus Elias celebrates 12 years at Balfour Winery this year. His father, Owen, counts at least 34, perhaps 35. Working side by side at one of the U.K’s most awarded wineries the pair are emblematic of a changing English wine industry one that is not only growing up, but is also being passed on to the next generation. Where in other countries families have continued in their parents and grandparents footsteps, sometimes over many centuries, the U.K is still in its infancy of following suit. English wine is no longer a novelty, as the medals at international wine competitions continue to tumble in, not least for Balfour - winning best in show at Decanter Magazine’s World Wine Awards this year amongst countless others - but the idea of building a life-long family winemaking legacy is still far from de rigeur. There are a handful of second generation winemakers in the U.K, but for Balfour Winery, it is the relationship that the Elias’ have that stands out as something truly special. Fergus, who graduated from Liverpool University with a degree in Ancient History, was originally destined to join the Royal Air Force: “I hoped I’d eventually land in helicopters” he says, and was on track to do exactly that until a torn ligament on the Rugby pitch meant his place on the squadron was lost. Deciding he should become a lawyer instead he took a holiday job at Chapel Down where his father was Head Winemaker.

Owen began making wine in the early 1990s, largely because he wanted to, and his route there was also far from conventional. A former student of Chelsea Art School where he was recognised among the Turner Young Contemporaries, he then cycled to Lisbon to paint, only to return knowing he no longer wanted to be an artist. Instead, he founded a record label. Disc Afrique championed African music including the Bhundu Boys - a rock and roll band from Zimbabwe. “One of his bands opened for Madonna, while the late John Peel once described him as a ‘genius’ on stage,” says Fergus of his father. Eventually, after marrying Fergus’s mother, he closed the label, moved to the Lake District and spent the next 18 months converting a house they had bought there. It was then he decided he wanted to become a winemaker.

“Careers in English wine didn’t exist in the 90s” says Fergus. “Chapel Down in those days was the only place that was remotely serious [about making wine]. It was a great place to start because you could see the mentality shift between them and other vineyards in the U.K” Fergus says he began with some of the worst jobs on the winery - cleaning tanks and drains, and the disgorging line, which at one point, he estimates, he spent nine hours a day, five days a week on. “Dad was trying hard not to make me a winemaker” he says, “It did put me off quite a lot” but, he adds “I didn’t realise how fortunate I was.” And the fortune, he says, was largely his father. “He was, and still is, one of the best. He’s appallingly under-celebrated for what he’s done for English wine.” For 19 years, Owen Elias made every Balfour wine. In May 2014, Fergus joined Balfour, still intending to complete his law conversion course. The winery was producing around 60,000 bottles a year. Today, that figure is closer to 750,000. When Fergus eventually took over as Head Winemaker, what he’d learnt through his father’s experience became fundamental to defining the house style, whilst still being able to put his own stamp on the wines. “Bizarrely, our palates seem to veer away from each other, but more often than not we find ourselves on the same page.” New, innovative wines appear each year, while others remain deliberately unchanged. Balfour Brut Rosé, the first English sparkling wine to win a gold medal on an international stage is still made in the same way it was two decades ago. “These styles are your heritage,” says Fergus “Your DNA. That is ‘Genesis’ for this brand.”

During harvest, Fergus handles the day-to-day decisions, while Owen remains “an extra brain”. There is also a clear understanding of what each brings. “I’m better at these things than him because of him,” Fergus says. He simply entered wine at 21; his father started in his 30s. “I’ve got ten years more experience on him at that age.” The duo continue to make certain wines together at Balfour, a family estate in the heart of Kent’s countryside, owned by the Balfour-Lynns - their own children now involved in the day to day operations, not least by being named on the wines. The artistic side once held by Owen also prevails with Nannette Balfour-Lynn designing the labels for the winemaker’s collection - two wines crafted according to Fergus and Owen’s own idiosyncrasies, but remaining true to legacy in style. 44 SEPTEMBER 2026

Exceptional exam results crown a remarkable year for Eltham College This summer’s results days provided the perfect finale to another outstanding year at Eltham College, a leading independent day school in South London for boys and girls aged 7 to 18.

xceptional GCSE performance saw Grade 9 as the most common result, accounting for 60% of all grades and placing the school among the UK’s top three co-educational schools, according to The Times. More than a quarter of pupils achieved at least nine Grade 9s, with one student earning an impressive 13 top grades. Success continued at A Level, where 31% of grades were awarded A*, while 66% achieved the coveted A*/A benchmark. As a result, 85% of students secured places at prestigious Russell Group universities, including Oxbridge, Imperial, UCL, Warwick, Bristol, Exeter and Durham. Beyond academics, the College enjoyed an exceptional year of co-curricular achievement. Sporting highlights included Kent Cup victories for the U12 and U14 boys’ cricket teams, Kent

titles in netball, rugby and hockey, regional athletics success, and impressive performances in swimming, fencing, water polo and ski racing. Across the summer, no fewer than five Eltham students were selected for the England Hockey National Age Group assessment process. Music flourished with more than 70 performances throughout the year, from major orchestral and choral concerts to the first-ever Battle of the Bands and the new summer music festival, ‘Elthambury’, which brought students, staff and families together for a memorable day of entertainment. Drama students also excelled, with six pupils gaining places on the prestigious National Youth Theatre summer courses. Three students were shortlisted for the Sovereign Art Foundation Student Prize, while an Arkwright Engineering Scholarship, the National Scalextric4Schools Championship and the US Embassy’s Frankly Speaking Competition were among other notable successes. Community service remained central to school life, with students supporting charitable initiatives through events including an overnight athletics relay and a ‘peace relay’ from Berlin to the Hague, inspired by former pupil Eric Liddell (of ‘Chariots of Fire’ fame). What Should Sixth Form Be For?

hat should the final years of school be for? Examination preparation? Certainly. Securing a place at the university course of your choice? Undoubtedly. The Art of Giving A

s the year begins to draw in, I always find myself thinking a little more about giving. Not the hurried, last-minute kind, but the lovely part that comes before - thinking about the people you know well and that small thrill of finding something that feels completely them. It was with this in mind that I found myself back at KATA. I’ve always loved the feeling of this space. Beautiful jewellery glints from the cabinets, but your eye is just as easily drawn upwards to the artwork on the walls. Everything feels connected by the hands that made it. This season brings together artists Caroline Martin and Heidi Langridge, whose work could, at first glance, hardly be more different. Caroline’s abstract seascapes are full of movement. Sweeping blues, aquas and soft washes seem to ebb and flow across the canvas, punctuated by unexpected flashes of coral and metallic warmth. Inspired by music and nature, particularly water, there is something wonderfully immersive about them - the longer you look, the more you seem to find. Then there are Heidi’s birds. Still, characterful and beautifully observed, they perch against bold fields of pink, blue and green. There is a playfulness to them that makes you smile, but also a simplicity that allows each little subject to command the canvas.

And yet, together, the two artists feel completely at ease. Perhaps that is what makes the space so distinctive. The small, dark brown-to-black papules visible all across his face and neck are characteristic of this benign condition, which is particularly common in people with darker skin tones. DPN is considered a benign variant of seborrhoeic keratosis, with genetic predisposition and increasing age thought to be the significant factors. Seborrhoeic keratoses are benign epidermal growths associated primarily with ageing. They typically have a characteristic raised, rough and dark brown appearance. They may occur almost anywhere on the body, particularly the back, face and trunk. Their precise cause is not fully understood, although genetic and age-related factors are involved. Xanthelasma are benign yellowish plaques usually 1–3mm in diameter. They are characteristic around the upper and lower eyelids While sometimes associated with abnormal lipid levels, xanthelasma can also occur when blood cholesterol is normal. Skin tags are soft benign growths containing collagen fibres and blood vessels. They commonly develop where there is friction or skin-to-skin contact, including the neck, eyelids, underarms, beneath the breasts and groin. In 2020 lockdown Gillian revolutioned the beauty industry and developed 2 new purpose made probes for removing all these lesions, and won several Awards too, something which hadn’t changed in the Industry since 1980. eptember is World Alzheimer’s Month, an opportunity to raise awareness of dementia and challenge some of the fear and stigma surrounding it. This year’s theme is “The Earlier You Know, The More You Can Do: A Dementia Diagnosis Matters.” If you’re concerned about changes in your own memory or behaviour, or those of someone close to you, it can be tempting to put off seeking advice. But dementia is not an inevitable part of ageing, and getting an assessment can help you understand what is happening and what to do next.

Know what to look for Dementia affects everyone differently and is about more than forgetfulness. Early signs can include regularly forgetting recent events, struggling to concentrate or follow conversations, finding familiar tasks more difficult, becoming confused about time or place, or changes in mood. Sometimes the clues are practical. Someone who previously managed well may begin struggling with personal care, medication, cooking or household tasks. Unpaid bills may accumulate, their home may become unusually untidy, or they may rely on family more frequently. Look for patterns and changes from what is normal for that person, rather than worrying about an occasional forgotten name or misplaced item.

hile we all look out the window and see a beautiful sunny day, there is no escaping the “cold” realisation that winter is coming. As Englishman we can tell. The change in the seasons is as engrained in our psyche as the penny on the pint in the Budget. We don’t like it, but we know its on the way. Far more than previous decades, energy costs have spiralled and forced everyone to seriously consider our household running costs. With government grants of up to £9,000.00 available when you switch to a heat pump there’s no better time to make the move. Heat pumps offer a huge uplift in efficiency compared to traditional boilers so if the “Green” argument doesn’t float your boat the cost saving alone should.

There are many misconceptions that surround the technology, in my opinion mainly due to peoples propensity to exaggerate and the fact that a negative story gains more traction. The facts are far less exciting. If a system is properly designed its performance will be flawless and offer outstanding efficiency. Featuring the ability to incorporate “Air con style” active cooling is also a bonus. Not every property is suitable and sometimes the return on investment doesn’t stack up, but you cant answer those questions without our help.
