Celebrate the changing seasons with the National Trust this autumn
Bask in glowing colour and immerse yourself in history at Chartwell, Emmetts Garden and Quebec House.
Autumn is for irresistible views and invigorating walks as Chartwell’s woodland becomes an expanse of golden hues, dancing in lakeside reflections. In the Walled Garden, dahlias and lateflowering blooms demand attention, not to mention the pumpkins.
Chartwell’s colourful and quirky pumpkins are the half term family activity theme. Purchase a trail sheet from the Visitor Centre, go exploring then return to collect a prize.
Seek out more colourful beauty in Chartwell’s art collection. Book the ‘Churchill the Artist’ guided Highlights Tour before 15 of his paintings head to the Wallace Collection in London for next year’s exhibition.
Chartwell’s biggest September news is the reopening of the Uniform Room which follows a major conservation project, made possible by generous donations and supporters’ legacies. The space has been transformed to showcase Sir Winston
Churchill’s newly restored uniforms. Discover how Britain’s wartime Prime Minister became one of the most recognisable figures of the 20th century. Be quick! This part of the house closes for winter conservation from early November until March. Rest assured though, other parts of the house will be decorated and open during the Christmas season.
October brings the Autumn Festival to Emmetts Garden, starting 10 October with a three-day craft market and a weekend of live music. Find everything from jewellery and prints to sculptures, ceramics and more. There are even edible goodies including wood-fired pizza.
Get a head start on half term at Emmetts Garden with the family activity trail (10 October–2 November). Fun Gus and friends are back with a new adventure. Purchase a trail sheet and help the heroic fungi for a prize.
For creative fun, book the kids onto a graffiti workshop (25 October). For adults, there’s a halfday, expert-led photography workshop (15, 23 October). Pre-book now; last year’s event sold out fast.
Nearby Quebec House sees an autumn packed with events, detailed in last month’s magazine. From 18th century re-enactors, history walks, tastings and architecture talks in September to a wonderfully witchy Halloween takeover during the October halfterm, there’s something for everyone.
Autumn at the National Trust brings so much to explore. Repeat visits are a must to experience the ever-changing landscapes and special events.

Why choose EFG for your flight training?
Michael
Shaw, Student Pilot at EFG tells us more
EFG stuck out for several reasons, locality; it’s only a 30 minute drive from myself, with great local transport links. Its location is key being at Biggin Hill means that you learn how to speak to full ATC, with a tarmac runway, which gets you literate from the get go.
When I visited the school I was struck with the relaxed and friendly atmosphere. There is a mix of experienced instructors, from varied backgrounds, including current and ex airline pilots.
What did you find challenging?
Keeping motivated during changeable weather over winter! I used this time focus on the 9 theory exams, so that when the weather improved, I could concentrate on the flying.
The most testing aspect of my practical flight training was speaking to Gatwick whilst transiting their airspace. This is exceptionally busy airspace, so you must be on your game by being aware and present. Despite this you are rewarded with some fantastic views.
What was your favourite part?
The first solo, it is something that is engrained in your memory. My first solo was at Southend Airport, this is where the training comes together and you can appreciate the progress you have made.
What was your most memorable dual flight?
My most memorable dual flight was landing away at Goodwood. Landing in the middle of the race track you get an idea of how bizarre aviation can be. Also standing next to the Goodwood Motor Circuit where the Goodwood Revival takes place.
What advice would you give other students?
Listen to your instructors! They always know best. I recall panicking in my mock skills test, thinking that everything was going wrong. However, I ended up nailing the skills test with examiner Roger Patterson. Think about it, the instructor has hundreds of hours and even hundreds of students passed. They know what they are doing, you’re in good hands.
What are your next steps?
I am proud to have achieved my PPL in just under one year and 62 hours flying. My aspiration is to be a commercial pilot. My next steps include starting my ATPL theory and hour building, I require 25 hours PIC before I can commence the IR(R), which I look forward to completing at EFG.

Bruton Place, in the very heart of Mayfair, is fast becoming a London foodie hotspot. The mews street just off Berkeley Square is home to an evolving roster of distinctive restaurants, cafés, bars and shops – and Silva is a key culinary player. The name Silva is Latin for ‘forest’.
Opened in November 2024 and owned by entrepreneur Daria Grebenyuk, Silva focuses on contemporary Mediterranean menus from Polishborn head chef Slawomir Sawicki.
Designed by Atelier Wren with huge personal input from Daria, the two-level restaurant, bar and private dining room is a chic, intimate space, with elegant details of mixed woods, marble, and decorative foliage. With 90 seats overall, Silva is verdant and light-filled, from the ground-floor restaurant to the cosy 1st floor bar which is a new Mayfair secret cocktail destination, and the adjacent private dining room (for up to 14).
Awards, accolades and positive media coverage are highlighting the fine food, pretty interiors and great service. Michelin UK & Ireland have just listed the restaurant with very positive messaging, including “it’s the ideal neighbourhood restaurant”, and “the abiding principle is a stripped back focus on the ingredients”. And The Good Food Guide enthused that “…the boutique charms of this small, upbeat restaurant are a perfect fit
for Mayfair…and the cooking is as joyous as it is seasonal”.
The seasonal à la carte menu is a vibrant showcase of the finest seasonal ingredients. The ‘Raw’ and starters sections feature Seabass crudo with jalapeño, yuzu and ginger dressing; Heritage tomatoes with compressed watermelon and gazpacho; and Stracciatella with caramelised peach and hazelnuts. Main courses range from Steamed halibut with broccoli purée, samphire and sauce vierge, to Lamb cutlets with courgette and marjoram jus. The dessert selection is unbeatable with the Silva signature of Manuela’s Basque cheesecake (the Pastry Chef’s favourite); Chocolate fondant with ginger ice cream; and Strawberries, vanilla Fontainebleau and meringue.
The lunch set menu (£29 for two courses) is a quick option and great value – available TuesdayFriday, typical dishes include Crispy fried egg with girolles and Parmesan sauce, Corn-fed chicken breast with carrot and saffron purée, and Lemon risotto with ricotta and confit Datterini tomatoes.
Brunch is a hugely popular service at the weekend with regulars citing the Crab and Gruyère omelette; Steak tartare with potato waffle and cured egg yolk; and Shakshuka with feta and bruschetta among the favourite dishes.
The Silva wine list is designed to carefully complement the menu, focusing on wines with a lighter, brighter profile and minimal oak influence. There are more than 25 wines available by the glass (from £10), and bottles start at £40.

TBoundary Disputes with Neighbours
he saying “good fences make good neighbours” is often raised in the context of boundary disputes to reinforce the value of clear dividing lines between properties, but as Robert Frost hinted in his poem Mending Wall, fences also create division where none is needed.
Disputes usually start when one neighbour takes a firm view about where the dividing line lies. Whether it’s a hedge, fence or pathway, things can escalate quickly. Boundary issues are often complicated, expensive and damaging to relationships, so a calm, practical approach is usually best.
these approaches can save money and preserve goodwill which is important when you still have to see each other over the fence.
There are steps that you can take to prevent problems. Checking deeds, title plans and boundaries carefully when buying or selling a property can help avoid disputes later. If there are shared spaces or unclear dividing lines, a formal agreement or updated Land Registry plan may be wise. If you do end up in a dispute, you’ll need to declare it when selling your home. Failing to do so could lead to legal action by the buyer.
A recent case shows how easily things can spiral. A row over a brook between two gardens went all the way to the Court of Appeal, with total legal costs hitting £300,000. What began as a disagreement became a years-long battle. The lesson? Seek advice early and don’t rush into court proceedings. Mediation or other alternatives are often quicker, cheaper and less stressful. While not right for every situation,
Boundary disagreements can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to face them alone. At Clarkson Wright & Jakes our team of experienced lawyers can guide you through your options, whether that means pursuing a claim or finding a resolution through mediation.

The Inheritance Tax Trap: Why You Need to Act Now
By David Braithwaite, BBC Radio Kent’s Money Mentor and Managing Director of Citrus Financial
Inheritance Tax (IHT) used to be something only the very wealthy had to worry about. Not anymore.
With frozen tax thresholds and rising property prices, more families are finding themselves caught in the IHT net, often without realising it. And from April 2027, pension savings will be included in estates for IHT purposes, making it even more important to plan ahead.
The standard threshold for IHT is £325,000, and while there are additional allowances (like the residence nil-rate band), many estates still face a
40% tax bill on anything above these limits. It’s a tax that hits families at the worst possible time. However, in many cases, it’s avoidable.
Yet far too many people are doing nothing. They assume their estate won’t be big enough to be taxed, or they plan to deal with it “later.” But when it comes to IHT, later often becomes too late.
We’ll be sharing practical guidance at an upcoming client event this autumn. Karen Gorbutt, one of our financial advisers, and I will explain why Inheritance Tax is back in the spotlight and what it could mean for you and your family.
The good news is that there are useful strategies to help reduce the impact of IHT. These include making full use of allowances, understanding how different assets are treated, and putting the right structures in place to protect your legacy.
Taking action early gives you more options. Plus, greater peace of mind that what you’ve built will go to the people you care about.
For more information, or to register for the event, scan the QR code on the opposite page or visit citrusfinancial.co.uk/iht-tax-trap.

INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS GUIDE
Where girls learn without limits
For over 140 years, Bromley High School GDST has championed the power of girlsonly education, providing an exceptional learning environment for bright and talented girls aged 4 to 18 years old, where they can explore, grow and learn without limits.
Girls thrive in girls’ schools
Research shows that girls flourish in girls-only schools. Evidence shows they achieve higher academic results, enjoy a broader range of subjects (including sciences and maths) and develop greater self-confidence, resilience and leadership skills. Free from gender stereotypes, girls are more likely to take risks, innovate and express their individuality and leadership style.
Whatever a Bromley High School pupil puts her mind to, she can achieve. We design every aspect of school life - our learning spaces, curriculum and co-curricular activities – with girls in mind and nurture a culture where each pupil is empowered to reach her full potential.
Built for girls, designed for growth
Set within 25 acres of green space, our school offers room to breathe and space to grow.
Specialist facilities across both Junior and Senior Schools include science labs, digital hubs, art, design and food technology studios, performance spaces and a Forest School.
Girls across the school have access to the excellent sporting facilities on site – a 25-metre indoor pool, a fitness suite and a full-sized astroturf – supporting their physical wellbeing and teamwork. Every girl who wants to play in a sports team has the opportunity to do so, no matter their ability.
We are continuing to invest not just in our classrooms but the social and informal learning areas too. Recent investments reflect our commitment to creating inspiring environments for girls. These include a new Junior School playground, sensory and classroom gardens, a canopied courtyard connecting the Junior and Senior Schools and updated science labs. Our
Wellbeing Hub and our new Neurodiversity Hub further support diverse learning styles and emotional wellbeing. We want to continue to be a modern, collaborative, welcoming and inspiring place for learning.
Confidence, knowledge and skills for life
Our recently launched Middle School (for girls in Years 5 – 8) bridges the gap between Junior and Senior School and is tailored exclusively to support girls through a key developmental phase when their self-confidence can take a dip. With a bespoke curriculum and specialist teaching, this initiative builds independence, self-esteem and a love of learning. This is a genuinely distinctive offer that sets us apart as experts in providing a successful transition in a girls’ only environment.
Our curriculum and co-curriculum give girls the confidence, knowledge and skills they need to thrive, academically and socially. Girls are empowered to reject gender stereotyping, for example in sports, subjects and (future) career choices. We want to lead the way in preparing pupils for life beyond school – as a result pupils’ higher education destinations across STEM subjects, finance and languages are above the national average.
This year we launched a new initiative to educate and empower girls on the complexities of women’s health and help them advocate for their health and wellbeing now and into their future. With topics ranging from menopause to mammograms and PCOS to cervical screening, it seeks to raise the profile of women’s health in an age-appropriate way within a broad range of subjects, for example the importance of strength training in PE and period poverty in PSHE.
Alongside this, our rich and varied co-curricular programme offers over 90 clubs and societies each week. Every girl is encouraged to discover her passions – from debating and drama to coding and cricket.
A culture of belonging and sisterhood
Our school values – curiosity, compassion and courage – create a positive place for learning and a warm, inclusive community where girls lift each other up. From age 4, pupils are encouraged to ask questions, voice their opinions and embrace new challenges and different viewpoints. They are also given plenty of opportunities to engage
with female role models. A sense of belonging and sisterhood continues long after their school journey, with support from the GDST’s Alumnae network of over 100,000 influential and inspiring women.
Foundations for a bright future
Our dedicated teaching staff and broad curriculum enable each girl to reach her full potential. Pupils consistently achieve excellent results in GCSEs and A levels, across a range of subjects, before progressing to celebrated pathways including Russell Group universities and international institutions. A Bromley High School pupil will leave us not only with outstanding academic results, but with the confidence, skills and vision to shape a bright future.

People Centred Approach to Learning
“As Head of Hazelwood School, I’m committed to the formative years of education. These early years shape not only what children know but who they become. At Hazelwood, our mission goes beyond academic excellence; we nurture the whole child, focusing on empathy, adaptability, collaboration, creativity and curiosity. In a changing world, children need knowledge alongside essential human skills—listening, problem-solving, and applying learning creatively in ways that connect with others.
Hazelwood is a coeducational Nursery and Prep School for children aged 9 months to 13 years, set in 25 acres of woodland on the Surrey-Kent border. We pride ourselves on offering a dynamic curriculum, outstanding facilities, and a forward-thinking approach to teaching. Above all, we place children’s wellbeing and growth at the heart of every decision, ensuring that education remains a personal and meaningful journey.
A recent innovation is our Flexible Classroom scheme. First trialled on a small scale, it has
transformed the learning environment school-wide. Children now choose how they learn best—comfy seating, floor seating, standing desks, or quiet zones. Dedicated areas for independence, one-to-one support, or group collaboration reflect our belief that learning should adapt to the individual. This approach fosters ownership, engagement, and confidence. We’ve seen children thrive on wobble stools, lap desks, or standing desks—because they feel empowered to take charge of their learning.
We have also opened our Upper School Learning Centre for Years 7&8. Designed to encourage collaboration and independence, it feels more like a creative workspace than a traditional classroom. The space celebrates pupils’ voices and ideas, empowering them to take responsibility for their learning and develop skills that extend beyond academics.
The relocation of our Reception classes to the main Wolf’s Hill site has also been transformative. Our youngest children are now fully integrated into the school community, enjoying new play spaces including an all-weather awning, sandpit, and dedicated Forest School area. Here, relationships are nurtured alongside curiosity, helping 4- and 5-yearolds grow in joy, confidence, and belonging.
Wellbeing underpins everything we do. Our Wellbeing Hub, launched last year, provides a safe and caring space for children needing calm, reassurance, or extra help. Happy children learn best, and by prioritising relationships and support, we ensure each child feels seen and valued.
Hazelwood remains committed to innovation, excellence, and empowering every child to grow, explore, and flourish.”

Bickley Park launches its Pre-School
Bickley Park School, the leading Bromley based co-educational Prep School, is launching a Pre-School to enhance and strengthen its Early Years provision.
This unique ‘Pre-School’ offer, led by a fully qualified teacher, will provide the same warm and nurturing environment as the Bickley Park Nursery. Play-based learning will meet early academic preparation when its first cohort joins in September 2025. With an in-take of rising 4 year-olds, the Pre-School Early Years Curriculum is taught with engaging and inspiring topics to ease the transition from Nursery into the more formal Reception year, giving children the confidence, independence, and learning foundations that they need to thrive.
The specialist teaching in the Pre-School will focus on a number of areas:
• Qualified Early Years educators will concentrate on pre-reading and writing skills that develop children’s phonological awareness.
• Early mathematical understanding is developed through hands-on, practical learning guided by trained Early Years Maths specialists. Children explore subitising in order to develop number sense and understanding of number composition.
• Specialist language teachers introduce Spanish through songs, games, and immersive activities.
• Music and Art specialists lead Performing and Visual Arts lessons to develop creativity, listening, memory, and expressive confidence. From singing and instrument playing to creative movement and artistic expression children discover the joy of performing and visual arts, a key part of early cognitive and emotional development.
• A ‘Sports for All’ philosophy ensures that Games, Gymnastics and Movement take place on a weekly basis. Additionally, Forest School specialists lead regular sessions in a fully kittedout onsite Forest School area.
“Parents seeking more focused preparation, as the perfect stepping stone between Nursery and Reception, now have this new enhanced offer in our Pre-School” says Tom Quilter, Head at Bickley Park School.
“Many families feel that the jump from Nursery to Reception can be quite significant so our Pre-School will fill that gap, fostering emotional readiness, curiosity, as well as pre-literacy, numeracy and other subject specialist skills in a way that’s fun, gentle, and developmentally appropriate.
“This is an exciting time for our Early Years provision so do come and visit, we’d love to meet you.”

Following these historic results, 96% of students will progress to their preferred universities, with more than two-thirds securing places at institutions ranked in the Complete University Guide’s Top 25. This year’s destinations reflect our commitment to supporting students’ individual journeys at St Dunstan’s, with eight students reading engineering, four entering drama schools, two reading Medicine and two taking up places to study Law. Three students have also received offers from prestigious music conservatoires.
Alex Brewer, Head of Sixth Form, added: ‘This year’s leavers have been an exceptional group to work with - driven, supportive and eager to make the most of every opportunity. Their recordbreaking results are richly deserved and reflect the dedication they have shown both in and beyond the classroom. The success across such a wide range of subjects - from medicine and engineering to music and the arts - highlights the breadth and balance of a St Dunstan’s education. I am especially proud of the way they have supported one another and embraced all that our coeducational community offers. As they take their next steps, I have no doubt they will continue to live out the values of St Dunstan’s and make a positive impact in whatever paths they choose.”

St Christopher’s The Hall celebrates the opening of inspiring new outdoor play area
St Christopher’s The Hall, Beckenham, has officially opened its brand-new outdoor play area, marking an exciting milestone for the school community.
The opening ceremony took place on Wednesday 3 September 2025 in a wonderful event attended by pupils, parents and staff. The playground was officially opened by special guest Tim Allardyce, an alumnus of St Christopher’s and a successful entrepreneur who runs physiotherapy centres across south-east London. Tim has kindly supported the playground project, helping to make the exciting vision a reality.
The new outdoor space has been designed to inspire creativity, encourage teamwork, and
promote physical wellbeing among children. It features a range of play equipment and trim trails to challenge pupils physically, helping them build strength, balance, and coordination through active play. Alongside these, a dedicated sensory area provides opportunities for exploration and calm reflection, while creative surface markings encourage imaginative games and playful learning. A small amphitheatre and sheltered canopy mean the space can be enjoyed all year round, whether for quiet moments or group activities.
Speaking at the opening, Head Tom Carter said: ‘Outdoor play is such a vital part of a child’s development, it builds confidence, resilience, and social skills. It was wonderful to see our pupils enjoying the new space straight away. I would like to thank Tim Allardyce for his generous support and for being part of such a special day for our school community. This play area will enrich pupils’ daily lives, giving them even more opportunities to learn through play, develop friendships, and embrace the outdoors in every season.’
Nick Hewlett, CEO of St Dunstan’s Education Group, added: ‘We are delighted with this outstanding new outdoor space at St Christopher’s. It builds upon the school’s already excellent facilities and further enhances the learning experiences available to all children. This investment reflects our commitment to ensuring every pupil thrives both inside and outside the classroom.’
The opening follows a year of success for the prep school, often referred to as Beckenham’s best-kept

secret. In its most recent ISI inspection, conducted in March 2025 under the new and more rigorous framework, St Christopher’s was recognised for its exceptional leadership, inspiring curriculum, and outstanding pupil development. Most notably, the school was awarded the ISI’s highest possible commendation: a ‘significant strength’ for its leadership of teaching and learning and continuous improvement in the quality of education, a rare honour within the prep school sector.
St Christopher’s The Hall joined the award-winning St Dunstan’s Education Group in early 2025 and continues to grow as a thriving community rooted in excellence and innovation.

These results speak volumes about the high standards and supportive environment that is the Art Department.
The success continued at GCSE, where every single student passed, and a third achieved top grades of 9-8 (equivalent of an A*). An outstanding 72% of students were awarded grades 9-6, cementing the Department’s reputation for excellence across all levels. Students are supported and challenged equally; no matter their level or ability.

He always finds new ways to challenge me, encouraging me to push my abilities and think outside the box.” Cobham Hall are proud to share that Bardot received a Grade 9 (A*) in GCSE Art.
It’s no surprise that Mr Turner was awarded a Certificate of Excellence in the prestigious Pearson Teaching Awards, recognising him as a contender for Teacher of the Year. The Department was also named a finalist in the Education Choices Awards for its outstanding Opportunities in Art and Music, proudly standing alongside some of the biggest names in the independent sector.

ACTION-PACKED DAYS AT ELTHAM COLLEGE
Eltham College life is always packed with excitement, and both Junior and Senior school pupils certainly rounded off the summer with plenty of action.
Summer months give the Junior school (ages 7 to 11) the perfect opportunity to make use of the shared 70-acre grounds. Year 3 pupils enjoyed a charming petit déjeuner picnic, placing their breakfast orders in French before playing boules under the morning sun. Sports also profit from shared facilities and expertise: the U11 boys’ hockey team made school history, taking first place in the London Regional finals with a 100% winning record, while U11 girls came third. Talented players in both teams enjoyed the further challenge of training with Year 7 at the Senior school – a key benefit of this family-focused, allthrough independent school.
Similarly, Year 6 students took part in a creative workshop, led by the artist-in-residence of the College’s Gerald Moore Gallery, as part of their seamless transition (without examination) through to the Senior school; Year 6 student Yueci was pivotal to the Senior chess team who, as Kent champions, competed in the English National finals.
The pace of activity and success only picks up in the Senior school. Year 7 teams stole the
show in athletics, the girls winning June’s district championships by thirty points, while just two pipped the boys into second. Eltham girls took all three U12 podium places in the Kent County fencing championships, U15 boys’ cricketers won the London Ingham Cup final, and the U14 skiing team took bronze in the National Indoor Championships; Eltham students also graced national squads in netball, hockey, athletics and swimming.
In drama, summer term brought Treasure Island, The Hound of the Baskervilles, and The Comedy of Errors to the stage, while August takes a combined Eltham and Thomas More production to the Camden Fringe. Four Eltham pupils have secured places in the National Youth Theatre, while two were offered places at the esteemed Rose Bruford College.
Music – at Eltham’s heart – rounded off the term with an outstanding programme of outdoor concerts, from rock and jazz bands to a full symphony orchestra, as well as triple internationalprize-wins for its U14 string quartet.
Though offering a breadth of co-curricular opportunity, Eltham remains focused on the academic results which underpin future choice and success. This year, 92% of A Level grades were A*/A/B, while at GCSE, over 70% of grades were 9/8, equivalent to A* under the previous system, placing the school firmly among the most academically successful in the country.

Behind the Motto ‘Looking Forward with Confidence, Looking Back with Pride’
Alex Foreman, Principal of The Duke of York’s Royal Military School, shares how the school’s unique blend of tradition and innovation develops confident, capable young people ready for the future.
Our motto isn’t just a slogan—it reflects our core values. “Looking forward with confidence, looking back with pride” captures our commitment to honouring over 200 years of heritage while preparing students to lead in an ever-changing world.
With fees from £4,360 per term (or £7,400 for full/weekly boarding), we offer a rich academic and co-curricular experience that rivals the best in the country. Students enjoy outstanding facilities, including modern science labs, an Olympic-standard athletics track, and a professional-style theatre.
But our real strength lies in the personal approach we take. Every staff member is committed to truly knowing each student, our ‘Dukies’, not just academically, but as individuals. We work to understand what drives them, how they learn, and what they aspire to become. This helps unlock their full potential and fuels achievement.
Our results reflect this. At A Level, 85% of students achieve A*-C, with 95% progressing to university—40% of those to Oxbridge or Russell Group institutions. At GCSE, our students perform in the top 5% nationally for progress, surpassing the national average by two-thirds of a grade.
“Education here extends well beyond academics. With over 60 weekly clubs and societies, plus extensive opportunities in sport, performing arts, and leadership, students are encouraged to explore, lead, and grow”
Education here extends well beyond academics. With over 60 weekly clubs and societies, plus extensive opportunities in sport, performing arts, and leadership, students are encouraged to explore, lead, and grow. These aren’t extras— they’re an integral part of school life and included within the fees.
I warmly invite you to visit, meet our students and see for yourself what makes The Duke of York’s Royal Military School such a special place.

Opening the door to your child’s future
A guide to School Open Days
As we approach the new term, it is now when thoughts turn to Independent School Open Days - allowing you to get a genuine feel for the school and whether on first impressions it is right for your child.
TOP TIPS FOR GETTING THE MOST OUT OF A SCHOOL OPEN DAY…
•Check on the school website if you need to make an appointment prior to visiting
•It is vital that you are prepared so read their school brochures thoroughly
•Take your child with you – their opinion is the most important. Children will get an idea whether they feel comfortable there.
•Talk to as many people as you can: pupils, teachers and the headmaster ideally
•Take an independent walk around with your child and chat about any reservations you might both have.
QUESTIONS TO ASK AT A SCHOOL OPEN DAY….
Some questions will differ according to your child’s age and whether you are visiting a day or boarding school.
•How selective is the school academically and what is the current pass rate for the common entrance exam?
•Are there high expectations and high academic achievements?
•Is the curriculum broad and well balanced? (you want your child to be successful but not too
“Take your child with you – their opinion is the most important”
compelled in pressure)
•What are the classroom sizes?
•What is expected of my child with regard to homework?
•Is there a healthy balance of fun and academia?
•Is there a bullying policy?
•What lunchtime meals are available?
•What sports and music facilities are available?
•What after school clubs and trips are available?
•How many pupils branch out into further education?
After the tour, you may have the opportunity to meet other parents and children on a more informal footing whereby the teachers and the head can answer queries over coffee and biscuits.

PRIVATELY EDUCATED PEOPLE DOMINATE TOP BRITISH JOBS
The study, by the Sutton Trust education charity, shows that virtually every key profession is dominated by privately educated pupils grabbing the senior management/director positions
Their grip on power is most noticeable in the judiciary, where 74 per cent of leading judges (those in the High Court or Court of Appeal) were privately educated.
Figures in the report also show that one in three MPs (32 per cent) was privately educated –as were half the members of the Conservative Cabinet. Even in Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Cabinet, 13 per cent of members went to private school. Nationally, the figure is just 7 per cent.
The report, carried out by Dr Philip Kirby, goes on to show that 71 per cent of senior Army officers – two-star generals and above – went to private schools. Only 12 per cent attended comprehensives.
“The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools”
In medicine, 61 per cent of doctors were privately educated while 22 per cent went to selective state grammar schools and just 16 per cent to comprehensives. The list goes on – 48 per cent of civil servants were educated privately, 29 per cent went to selective grammar schools and 23 per cent to comprehensives.
The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools. And of those chief executives of FTSE 100 companies who were educated in the UK, 34 per cent were privately educated.
Nearly half the top actors – 42 per cent of Bafta Award winners – went to private schools, fuelling criticism that the profession is becoming more elitist.
“Our research shows that your chances of reaching the top in so many areas of British life are so much better if you went to an independent school,” said Sir Peter Lampl, the chairman of the Sutton Trust. “As well as academic achievement, an independent education tends to develop the essential skills such as confidence, articulacy and teamwork, which are vital to career success.
Managing Back To School With Whole Child Therapy
Providing meaningful child-led therapy that makes a difference to every child Whole Child Therapy – Empowering Joy
Returning to school after the summer or starting school for the first time can be a daunting experience for both children and parents. At Whole Child Therapy (WCT), we support children, their parents, and their schools in meeting a child’s unique needs, especially during stressful times like the transition back to school. Some techniques that can help include:
• Reducing the anxiety of the unknown - Research shows that anxiety is linked to not knowing the ‘what is going to happen’ moments in life - the fear of the unknown. Helping your child plan their school day and week can help lessen anxiety. Going through ‘what could we do’ scenarios allows a child to feel more prepared. You can use role-playing and stories to help your child think about school and plan ahead. Developing consistent routines or rituals that your child enjoys will help them feel organised and secure.
• A touchstone - Providing all children, especially teenagers, with a small token or item they can hold, fiddle with, or connect with at school - can be a useful anchoring tool. A small stone or a fidget toy can be effective. If your child tends to lose things or worries about
losing them, consider choosing a replaceable item, such as Blu-Tack, a pebble, or a small rubber ball. Just make the school aware that it’s part of a sensory strategy.
• Role Model Feelings and Experiences - All humans find the questions ‘what is wrong’ or ‘how do you feel’ challenging to answer. Instead, try talking to your child about your feelings and sensory experiences. Talk about the tools you use, or even ones you could use, like breathing, going for a run, or chewing your pen.

HOUSE & GARDEN
Designed for Life
This September marks an exciting new chapter for Royal Tunbridge Wells, as luxury fitted furniture specialist Neatsmith opens the doors to its seventh UK showroom, right in the heart of the High Street. Known for its impeccable craftsmanship, timeless design, and tailored approach, Neatsmith has been transforming homes for over 20 years. Now, for the first time, Kent homeowners can experience the brand’s signature craftsmanship firsthand
Neatsmith has become synonymous with bespoke design at the highest level. With six existing showrooms across London and the South East, including Hampstead, Brentwood, Hatch End, Guildford, Hampton Hill, and its flagship store on London’s King’s Road in Chelsea, Neatsmith has built a loyal following of clients who value quality, personal service, and the art of craftsmanship. The arrival of the Royal Tunbridge Wells showroom marks a long-planned expansion into a region the brand has admired for years.
Founded over two decades ago, in 2005 by Andrew Nagel and his two sons Philipp and Mathew, Neatsmith has earned a reputation for excellence in craftsmanship, innovative design, and an unwavering commitment to quality. Today, brothers Philipp and Mathew continue to drive the brand forward, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern innovation. Their hands-on approach and emphasis on service have helped Neatsmith earn its reputation as one of the UK’s leading names in luxury fitted furniture.
“We are thrilled to open our first showroom in Kent, a region we’ve long wanted to serve with a dedicated physical presence”
“We are thrilled to open our first showroom in Kent, a region we’ve long wanted to serve with a dedicated physical presence,” says Neatsmith Director, Philipp Nagel. “Tunbridge Wells, with its rich history and thriving high street, is the perfect location to introduce more customers to Neatsmith’s dedication to quality, craftsmanship, and bespoke design. We look forward to welcoming visitors into our showroom and helping them create beautifully designed spaces in their homes.”
At 3,000 square feet over three floors, Neatsmith’s new Tunbridge Wells location is far from a typical retail showroom. Situated in a prime position on the High Street, the store has been carefully designed to offer something completely unique: an immersive home-like experience where customers can see, touch, and imagine how Neatsmith’s furniture might transform their own spaces.
The upper floors have been created to resemble the rooms of a beautiful period home. Authentic “room sets” showcase wardrobes, walk-in dressing rooms, home offices, and entertainment units in a context that feels warm, lived-in, and aspirational.
Once inside, visitors are surrounded by meticulous detailing, beautifully designed fitted wardrobes with integrated lighting, clever
hidden storage, and finishes that range from timeless wood to contemporary lacquered panels. Every element reflects Neatsmith’s unwavering commitment to marrying form and function.
What sets Neatsmith apart is its dedication to truly personalised design. Each piece is bespoke, tailored not just to the dimensions of a space but to the way a client lives. A dressing room might feature a glass-topped island for jewellery and watches, lit like a boutique. A home office might conceal a cocktail cabinet behind fluted glass doors. A fitted wardrobe could incorporate every imaginable detail, maximising storage while creating something beautiful to use every day.
And it’s not just the furniture that’s bespoke. Neatsmith’s experienced in-house designers work closely with each client, offering one-to-one consultations in the showroom or at home. They guide the process from concept sketches to final installation, ensuring the finished result reflects the client’s tastes, lifestyle, and aspirations.
With its mix of historic architecture, independent shops, and vibrant cultural scene, Tunbridge Wells offers the perfect backdrop for Neatsmith’s arrival.
Whether you’re planning a full renovation, upgrading a single room, or simply curious to see what’s possible, the new showroom is designed to spark ideas and start conversations.
Neatsmith’s Tunbridge Wells showroom officially opens this month, and the team is ready to welcome visitors who are seeking inspiration, advice, or simply a beautiful space to browse. Whether you’re drawn to the elegance of a glassfronted wardrobe, the luxury of a walk-in dressing room, or the efficiency of a perfectly planned home office, you’ll find it here, along with the expert guidance to make it your own.
Neatsmith is located at: 33 High Street, Tunbridge Wells www.neatsmith.co.uk | IG @Neatsmith

6 DINING ICONS THAT EVERY DESIGN ENTHUSIAST SHOULD KNOW
Food is the universal language of the world, and the table we gather around is its place of translation. A dining space that allows for expression and carries its own story transforms a room from being simply a place to eat into the beating heart of the home. Memories are both made and recalled here, where plates, and passions, are shared. It embodies all the defining characteristics of what we call home.
TAKE YOUR SEAT AND EXPLORE THE VERY TOP OF TABLETOPS IN OUR DINING GUIDE:
Saarinen Dining Table, Knoll (above)
Like a great many things in that magical period of mid-century design, the Saarinen table was masterminded by the Finnish virtuoso Eero Saarinen. Why is it recognisable? Well, because the likelihood is, no matter your level of furniture knowledge, you have seen it before. It has appeared on both the big and small screen, in media old and new, making it a symbol that represents an entire era of design to millions. The piece has been under the stewardship of Knoll since its inception, founded by his longtime collaborator Florence.
Epic Dining Table:
Epic by name, epic by nature. A monumental mass of marble that wouldn’t be out of place in ancient Greek myth, Gubi’s monolithic masterpiece combines a stylish Scandi palette with geometric angles embodied in soulful Italian stone. Designed by GamFratesi, the dining table has proven so popular that it recently gained a debonair dark green outdoor iteration.

BM1160 Dining Table, Carl Hansen & Søn:
As you’re no doubt aware the 1950s were revolutionary for dining and design in general. Nowhere is this more evident than on the shores of Scandinavia. Danish designer Børge Mogensen’s Hunting Table emerged as one of the standout creations of this Northern European creative explosion. His masterful carpentry, paired with his ethos of making design accessible to all, gave rise to one of Carl Hansen & Søn’s most beloved dining tables: the BM1160 Hunting table.
Infinity Dining Table:
The Infinity table by Porada achieves something many find difficult: it takes materials synonymous with sturdiness and strength and sculpts them into sweeping lines and supple shapes, executed with such precision that they appear almost like a natural occurrence within the timber. It’s little wonder that this design has become Porada’s flagship dining solution and one of Stefano Bigi’s finest works.
Clay Dining Table, Desalto:
Harmony and balance are hard to achieve, especially in the home. Yet in our eyes the embodiment of a Feng Shui space can be found in the structural marvel that is the Clay table by Desalto, with a connecting point so finely poised it feels as though it defies the very laws of physics. Topped with a natural surface and true-to-name clay texturing, it is one of those rare visual dining delights. We aren’t the only ones that took a particular shine to this piece, upon its release it immediately became an award-winning design at multiple shows including ‘Iconic Design’ and the ‘Red Dot Awards.’
“It immediately became an awardwinning design at multiple shows including ‘Iconic Design’ and the ‘Red Dot Awards”
EM Dining Table, Vitra:
Another in a long line of mid-century masterpieces, Jean Prouvé’s EM Table is a versatile design that elevates any setting it graces. Subtle yet strong. Stylish yet striking. Just as at home in a contemporary Italian interior as it is in a Scandinavian one, it embodies the timeless adaptability found in so many of Vitra’s creations – the ultimate in multi-faceted design. chaplins.co.uk

Bespoke storage for awkward spaces
Sometimes the awkward and underused spaces in our homes are overlooked. But with a little vision, some inspiration and expert craftsmanship, these areas can become both a functional and beautiful space to use.
Storage that’s tailored to the exact proportions of your home – such as full-height cabinetry or alcove shelving – creates something that’s seamlessly integrated and uses every inch of available space.
From the understairs cupboard to narrow hallways and forgotten landings, bespoke cabinetry transforms what was once wasted space into an exceptional and unique design feature.
Understairs transformation
Under the stairs is a great example of where space can be used creatively. Even the smallest cupboard can be transformed into something innovative and useful.
Wine storage is an inventive use of under stairs space that’s also a real talking point. From wine fridges and conditioners to bespoke wine racks, every detail can be tailored to the space and your requirements.
Hidden gems
Bespoke pantries and bars can be seamlessly incorporated into kitchen cabinetry, providing storage that’s both practical and beautiful. They’re also ideal spots to hide away small appliances. Thoughtful design features, such as fully retractable ‘pocket’ doors, keep the space uncluttered and maintain a minimalist aesthetic.
Smart landings
Landings are often underused; and irregular ceiling heights can make finding off-the-shelf storage tricky.
Bespoke, floor-to-ceiling cabinetry uses every inch of space by perfectly tracing your wall and ceiling contours.
Wall potential
Narrow thoroughfares often mean wasted space. But with clever use of your walls, full-height dressers or cupboards can be designed to sit flush, offering generous storage without overwhelming the room or encroaching on the walkway.
Tidy hallways
Hallways can often feel cluttered with coats, shoes and bags.
Bespoke storage that’s perfectly designed and tailored to your family, such as benches, cubbies, hooks and built-in cupboards, keeps everything organised in a compact, stylish way.
Bespoke design for bespoke living
Whatever your space and whatever your storage needs – we’re here to inspire you. Great British Kitchens & Interiors, based in Sevenoaks, create beautiful, bespoke kitchens and interiors for homeowners across Kent and south London.

Storage Solutions for Everyone
Schmidt have a huge number of storage solutions for every wallet
3different types of larder, extra wide/deep and high base units (3D fit), floor to ceiling options, and up to 3 made-to-measure units (from certain ranges) at no extra cost. Larders: The open-shelf cabinet is a good, solid entry level cabinet with adjustable shelves, the Pantry cabinet gives easy access via shelving and door storage, while the Larder cabinet is the ultimate in storage – full extension, individual pull out drawers mean that everything is instantly accessible and visible, with no void necessary above the shelf to lift items out.
Evolution 130: Instead of the normal 5-drawer base unit, Schmidt have raised the height of their standard base unit to 78cm (usually 72cm) which has enabled them to fit an extra drawer into the unit. A 6-drawer format means it is much easier to create a streamlined kitchen as well: 1 deep drawer & 3 shallow; 3 medium; 1 deep, 1 medium and 1 shallow – the options are many, but the horizontal lines will flow in perfect symmetry with other units in the kitchen. The extra height unit also caters for the taller profile of most kitchen users today.
3D Fit: With plinth heights from 7cm to 20cm, Unit heights from 52cm to 91cm, 4 different depths,
and bespoke widths to the nearest millimetre, every single inch of available space in the kitchen can be utilised. Whether you are 5 foot nothing, or 6 foot 7 inches – the height can work for you! Schmidt’s standard 67.5cm base unit is joined by 3 other depths: 35, 62.5 and a jumbo 70cm unit – which can achieve up to 26% more storage, and of course more worktop space as well.
Pull out drawers mean no more scrabbling about on hands and knees for that seldom used item at the back of the cupboard. 3 x 600mm width Jumbo units, 780mm high and 700mm depth for extra storage.

Double Up
If you value security, warmth and a quiet life,
look at laminated double glazing
Though window frames may be your main concern, the glazing itself can make a big difference.
For too long, the only alternative to double glazing was triple— heavy, expensive and awkward to install. But innovations in materials give new, laminated double glazing units the power to make your home more secure, cheaper to heat and quieter.
What exactly is laminated double glazing?
Laminated glazing is similar to vehicle windscreens, where two or more layers of glass sandwich a micro film layer. But there’s more to this sandwich than the filling.
There are big advantages in security (it’s harder to break and doesn’t shatter), it improves on energy performance and acts as an enhanced acoustic and UV barrier.
Laminated v. triple glazing
Laminated double glazing offers higher performance for less:
Security—Laminated double glazing is tougher, more secure and safer.
What began as an automotive safety feature is now desirable for household security—a better choice for ground floor windows and doors than toughened or tempered glass.
Thermal efficiency—Thermal insulation used to be triple glazing’s big advantage, but laminated double glazing has caught up.
The target figure is a U-value of 1.0Wm2K which meets the requirements of the Future Homes Standard.
Noise reduction—Laminated double glazing is quieter.
Ryan Green, MD of Clayton Glass believes it’s worth spending a bit of time to understand the science, ‘the window, has two different thicknesses of glass and blocks out more sound because sound travels at various waves, and different thicknesses have different frequencies to the so the weighted decibel reduction is 35dB, which is really quiet.’
UV reduction–no more fading furniture
Where a typical double or triple glazed unit would let through around 10% of UV, the laminated glazing interlayer absorbs 99%.
What else should you look for when considering replacement windows today?
It’s always worth checking the specifications, which can affect performance.
Fineline fits laminated double glazed units made to order by Clayton Glass. Each unit is built up from a 6.8mm acoustic laminate pane (3mm glass, 0.8mm interlayer, 3mm glass), an 18mm warm edge spacer and 4mm HP Low Emissivity Eco Max pane.
It’s a high performing window on all the key metrics, but it goes further than that: EcoMax is the leading sustainable glass, made from 40% recycled material. It is also backed by an environmental commitment that ensures a tree is planted for every customer order.
For more information on how Fineline can help with laminated double glazing for your home, search fineline-windows.co.uk or visit your local showroom.
