Anne Boleyn’s Childhood Home
May is a pivotal time to delve into the life of Anne Boleyn, known as the Queen of a Thousand days, as the month is the anniversary of her execution.
T
he ill-fated day took place almost 500 years ago on 19th May 1536 at the Tower of London. This date marks the anniversary of her death and offers a moment to reflect on her legacy to those visiting her childhood home at Hever Castle in Kent. Kneeling at the block, her final prayer was: “To Jesus Christ I commend my soul; Lord Jesus receive my soul.” These words have become central to her legacy. They reflect her religious devotion and stoic acceptance, even after being found guilty of adultery, incest, and treason. During her lifetime, Anne Boleyn often returned to Hever Castle either to escape court scandal or recover her health. The Castle now holds a permanent exhibition of artefacts connected to Anne and the Boleyn family including portraits of Anne and her family, letters exchanged at court and two of Anne Boleyn’s personal prayer books (Books of Hours).
One of these Books of Hours is believed to have been taken with her to the Tower of London. It contains her inscription: “Remember me when you do pray that hope doth lead from day to day. Anne Boleyn. The other is even older, dated around 1450, with the words: “Le temps viendra, Je Anne Boleyn” (“The time will come, I Anne Boleyn”). These books are housed in the Castle’s Book of Hours Room. This year visitors to Hever Castle will discover the opulence of the Tudor court with a unique visiting exhibition of historically accurate costumes from the BBC’s adaptation of Hilary Mantel’s final novel Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light, on display until 2nd November 2025 (included in admission ticket). The costumes provide a tangible link to the historical period depicted in the series and compliments the Boleyn Apartment that opened in 2024 providing visitors the chance to walk in this famous family’s footsteps, offering a visual and sensory experience. A vintage agricultural machinery ring and a British Army village will add to the excitement. Tudor Rose Tearoom, Westerham
T
his month, I had the pleasure of visiting the Tudor Rose Tearoom in Westerham, situated in a picturesque location overlooking the green. I aimed to sample their afternoon tea selection, a delightful tradition that has experienced a significant resurgence across the UK and globally in recent years. The Tudor Rose Tearoom boasts a rich history, having originally opened as a bakery in the 1890s and transitioning to a tearoom in 1905 under the stewardship of Arthur Miler. The name “Tudor Rose” was adopted in 1979. Notably, Alice Hargreaves, née Liddell, who resided in the opposite house (The Breaches), served as the muse for Lewis Carroll and was the real-life inspiration for Alice in Wonderland. This connection has been beautifully integrated into the tearoom’s décor and theme, featuring Sanderson wallpaper, hand-painted murals, and themed teapots.
Food & Drinks The Tudor Rose Tearoom offers a daily selection of hearty cooked breakfasts and lunches, complemented by an extensive array of filled sandwiches, paninis, jacket potatoes, cakes, and sweet treats, all made fresh on-site. They also provide a commendable selection of vegetarian and gluten-free options, alongside a diverse range of coffees and teas, including Earl Grey and Assam. During my Alice in Wonderland-themed afternoon tea, I was delighted by a three-tiered presentation of indulgent offerings. The base tier featured a delectable assortment of “Shrink Me” savory rolls, including the “White Rabbit” (mature smoked cheddar and chutney), the “Cheshire Cat” (smoked salmon with cream cheese and chives), and the “March Hare” (chicken, pesto, and parmesan vol-au-vents). Each was delicious, complemented by refreshing shots of passion fruit and mango bubble tea that burst pleasantly on the palate. The next tier showcased a generous selection of sweet delights, including strawberry shortbread with popping candy, mini cakes, and fruity macarons. I made sure to save room for the renowned homemade scones, which I tried in both plain and fruit varieties, paired with traditional strawberry jam. Alternatively, options include raspberry, blueberry, or marmalade. The team is also happy to customize your afternoon tea to accommodate dietary requirements or to theme it around special occasions such as baby showers and birthdays. 2 2 M AY 2 0 2 5
Summary Having arrived with no prior experience of afternoon tea, I departed as a convert and eagerly anticipate the opportunity to sample their Savory Afternoon Tea when it launches later this year.

The RHS Botanical Art and Photography Show in partnership with Saatchi Gallery will feature a rich variety of subjects including stunning Japanese Cherry blossom, the unusual ‘Kangaroo paw’ plants of Australia, and plants used in traditional cosmetics by Korean Women. Portfolio photography features a diverse range of plants, gardens and natural habitats with subjects ranging from Tuscan olive trees to the Acacia cyclops of South Africa’s richly biodiverse Cape floral kingdom. A common theme in this year’s exhibit is plants that have been useful for humans, whether for beauty, clothing, medicine or fuel. All of the artworks submitted have undergone a meticulous reviewing process by an expert judging panel and assessed on aesthetic appeal, scientific accuracy and technical skill. Once on display, the artists compete for an RHS medal – Gold, SilverGilt, and Bronze, as well as a ‘best in show’ award, namely Best Botanical Artwork, Best Botanical Art Exhibit, Best Portfolio Photography Exhibit, Best

Single Image and Judges Special Award. The public will once again have the opportunity to vote in the People’s Choice award via the RHS website. The Show contributes to a long legacy of botanical art collecting and display by the RHS, and complements the work of the RHS Lindley Collections, which holds more than 30,000 botanical paintings and heritage photographs. Getting Married Abroad

verseas weddings are becoming more popular but, before making the decision to get married abroad, and choosing the relevant destination, it is essential to understand what formalities and documents are required. They may take some time to complete and will involve some expense. More often than not, some of the documents will need to be signed in front of or certified by a notary public. Typical documents are: • Full birth certificates, passports and proof of address. • Certified copies of a decree absolute if you are divorced, and a death certificate of your former spouse if you are widowed.
• Certified copies of your change of name deeds if you have changed your name since birth. • Certificate of no impediment (CNI) which confirms that there is no legal obstacle to your marriage. • Affidavit or statutory declaration – in countries where a CNI is not required, a sworn statement before a notary public may be needed to confirm eligibility for marriage. • Apostille – some countries require further legalisation after notarisation, such as an apostille from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) or consular legalisation, which we can arrange. We have plenty of experience to guide you through the documentation. Although we can help with any country in the world, the most popular destinations we deal with are Italy, Turkey, Malta and Cyprus. You do not need to (and, in fact, no longer can) register your overseas marriage in the UK. You can rely on your foreign marriage certificate but, if is not in English, you may need to have it professionally translated and certified. t Dunstan’s College is delighted to announce it has been shortlisted for Independent Senior School of the Year at the Tes Schools Awards 2025. The Tes Schools Awards, known as the Oscars of education, recognise the very best teachers and schools from UK state and independent schools, across early years settings, primary and secondary. Speaking about the news, Head of Senior School, Jade McLellan, explained: ‘We are all delighted with this news, especially as the nomination comes only three years after winning the same category. ‘St Dunstan’s is a school that has led educational thought ever since its foundation in 1888 and we are proud to continue this tradition now, pairing outstanding academic outcomes with a moral ambition that inspires staff and pupils alike. We truly are an independent school like no other with our

All these promote respect and understanding among the pupils for everyone in their own school and in the wider local community. This is a significant strength of the school.’ St Dunstan’s Education Group, CEO, Nick Hewlett added: ‘I am thrilled with this news and the shortlisting is an endorsement of the courageous and creative educational choices that have been made for the students in receipt of an education in the St Dunstan’s Senior School. green and leafy oasis in the heart of southeast London is home to one of the capital’s most exciting independent schools: Eltham College. Founded in 1842, Eltham enjoys a long and proud history. The last decade has been particularly transformative. Under Headmaster Guy Sanderson, Eltham College – formerly a boys’ school – has not only become fully co-educational but risen dramatically up all rankings thanks to outstanding academic results, in recognition of which the school received the coveted Sunday Times ‘London Independent School of the Year 2024’ award. wner, Gail Thomas, explains how she got involved in this thriving business based in Badlesmere, just a few miles from Lenham on the Ashford Road. Gail says: ‘I live at Eastwell Park, where my partner is the head keeper. Originally I was working for a national house builder selling houses but took voluntary redundancy. ‘ ‘Enjoying a brief period of being a lady of leisure, I popped into a local shop, the Kent Wool Growers, for a pair of Wellington boots. Whilst there trying on boots, I chatted to the assistant who told me he had just got himself a new job and
would be leaving. He then mentioned that they hadn’t filled the vacancy and that the job would be perfect for me! And so I ended up working for Kent Wool Growers for 7 years; a great place, very interesting and with great customers, fantastic characters and never a dull moment. This is where I learnt all about clothing, footwear and – most importantly – good customer service. Chatting to a friend whilst having lunch in my local, I mentioned that I might like to go it alone and open my own shop. She then told me about possible premises that were only a few miles from home! The very next morning I viewed and secured it straight away. So started the ‘In The Country’ venture here in Badlesmere. Over the years I have added to the stock and am proud to say, I offer a fantastic range of clothing, footwear and accessories for men, women and children – oh! And mustn’t forget the dogs! Sevenoaks Leisure Centre encourages young people to get active Sevenoaks Leisure Centre is helping young people kick-start their fitness journey with its Junior Gym Memberships, designed for 11 to 15-year-olds. 5kg. Functional training tools like BOSU balls, medicine balls, and battle ropes are also available. Supervised sessions ensure that juniors can use the equipment effectively while building strength, endurance, and confidence in a safe environment. Joanne Simons 15-year-old son is a junior gym member said: “My son Alex has been a member of the gym now for just over a year and in that time, I have really seen his overall health improve. He has become so much more active, and his confidence has increased. He now attends the gym at least 3 times a week and has started to build up his strength with using heavier weights which he seems to really enjoy. Overall, Alex very much enjoys attending the gym and keeping active is a big part of his life. Alex has also mentioned how polite and helpful all the staff are in the gym and if he has any questions, they will offer support and advice.”

I will always remember one project in a period property that was particularly challenging because every floor sloped, every wall leaned and every surface was uneven!

he design playground of the 2025 Salone del Mobile furniture and design fair, and the ever-growing Milan Design Week that blossoms around it, saw the city once more basking in interiors innovations, pioneering product design, and shifting perspectives on space. The ambiance was mindful, subdued, even tentative, chiming with the fair’s theme of ‘Thought for Humans,’ which honed in on the power of design to support wellness and bring people together. Neutrals and naturals reigned, with luxury design brands from around the world leaning into an organic palette and the materials of nature as well as carefully refining and extending their current collections, plus mixing in a few surprises along the way. Exploring Milan Design Week 2025, our eyes adjusted to a spectrum that’s been simmering in the background for a while but came into full bloom this year. Neutrals. Everywhere. From pale ivory, oat and cream to more mid-level camel, fawn and taupe, the design sphere has given itself over to earthy, grounded shades that hold onto enough lightness to energise a space to leave us feeling both elevated and serene. 2025’s defining trends emerged from a hush of calm and quiet confidence, with just enough offbeat character to keep us guessing. It was a sea of soothing shades, natural materials, soft tactility and grounded forms – designs that whispered rather than shouted. Prioritising sensory richness over visual noise, pieces tempting us to touch and invited interaction with alluring materials and irresistible surfaces. Shapes span the slick and sleek

to the enveloping, friendly, and at times strangely familiar … Rule-benders and category-dodgers emerged as ever, with styles, textures and materials on the fringes of the all-is-calm palette bringing range, dynamism, and the pleasingly unpredictable.

TEXTURED GLASS: It’s the time of misted and molten glass. Misted glass has a frosted or opaque finish, so light passing through it is diffused, creating a soft, less defined glow. Molten glass is filled with ripples and movement, like it’s not quite set yet (perhaps having oozed from the earth or poured forth from a volcano), most often transparent but distorting light that does pass through. Both approaches feel organic, yet toy with shadow, skewing it for a floaty, ethereal, am-I-awake effect.

LACQUERED LUXE: If you want even, uninterrupted, slickest of the slick surfaces, it’s lacquer you’ll be turning to this interiors season. Becoming more and more apparent on the decorative scene of late, it’s now glided right into the spotlight. Its silky finish negating the need for bold statement colour, the high-gloss finish itself is the main attraction as light bounces dramatically from its look-overhere polished coat. The contemporary lacquered pieces combine the traditional finish with clean, minimalist forms that hint at the sculptural with the simple shapes enhanced by impactful lustre.
SILVER LININGS: In need of the most brilliant shine and most uninterrupted sheen of them all? You’re in luck, as the metallic of 2025 is a silver-toned, chrome-y, mirror-like reflection. No longer just a throwback to retro futurism or a subtle accent, it’s now fully dominating the scene with its liquid silver-style surface turning furniture and beyond into statements that radiate high-voltage polish. Colour? We’ve all but forgotten what it is at this point as light zips across chrome’s surface, catching every curve, edge and angle with assertive precision that feels fresh, refined and fearless.
FOLDED FORMS: We’re welcoming into the fold pieces that exhibit textural tucks; those that show off how they’re artfully shaped and gathered into being. Furniture using its very construction and structure as decoration, and as a leading part of its personality. The move creates visual rhythm through pinches and pleats, and brings softness to hard materials. Such silhouette-led tactility turns each design into something almost garment-like – tailored, detailed and sensorially engaging.
MICHELIN MAGIC: While we’re talking of folds, the influence of the king of undulating layers echoed through time this year, making his presence known across a range of brands and designs. Remember… the Michelin man? You will soon, as his rounded, friendly and comfortable rolls left their imprint on the season’s standout pieces.
EXTERNAL ELEMENTS: When high-end materials and artisanal craftsmanship come together, it’s hard to resist adding just a little more. That’s why our next trend explores designs that whisper, “Just a little something extra.” A lounge chair wrapped in a second skin of leather, or a sofa calling for the warm embrace of its outer shell – these are the pieces that quietly insist on an extra layer of luxury.
WILDCARDS: There have to be some. Those designs that go against the grain, that don’t even bother looking up to see what the rest of the world is doing. T
his beautifully crafted pool is a perfect example of XL Pools’ expertise and bespoke design. It’s almost unbelievable that the same stone used outside the pool continues seamlessly into the pool interior. A bespoke IPE hardwood diving board adds an elegant touch and contrasts beautifully with the water’s colour and the powerful double-turbine swim jet is tailored to the client, offering varying levels of resistance for a customized swimming experience. Bespoke corner entry steps were designed not only to provide a lounging area but also to ensure practicality and safety, particularly in conjunction with the swim jet. The project began in January, which brought challenges due to weather conditions, slowing progress until conditions improved. Additionally, the pool’s location relative to the main access road complicated material delivery, requiring extra planning and manpower to transport materials to the site.
