Swathes of daffodils dancing in the breeze are a joyful sight in March

M

arch brings a blaze of golden colour to Kent as some of the county’s finest gardens open for the National Garden Scheme (NGS), offering visitors the chance to wander among glorious daffodils, enjoy delicious teas and welcome dogs too. With Mother’s Day falling on Sunday 15 March, these spring openings provide a perfect excuse for a memorable family outing.

Doddington Place opens on Mother’s Day and has the distinction of becoming an RHS Partner Garden in 2025. Visitors can enjoy carpets of daffodils and spring bulbs flowing into a beautiful woodland garden, alongside a restored Edwardian Rock Garden with pools and a newly built ‘Wobbly Tower’ offering far-reaching views.

Extensive lawns, clipped yew hedges and fine trees frame the gardens, while the popular tearoom serves a tempting selection of cakes and drinks.

Open Sunday 15 March, 11am–5pm. Adults £14, children £4. Dog friendly.

At Hever Castle & Gardens, an astonishing 250,000 daffodils announce the arrival of spring during its ‘Dazzling Daffodils’ week. Wednesday 18 March is set aside for NGS visitors, with guided tours of Anne Boleyn’s Orchard led by daffodil expert Johnny Walkers and head gardener Neil Miller. Carefully chosen varieties ensure blooms from December through to May, cementing Hever’s growing reputation as a daffodil destination. Open Wednesday 18 March, 10.30am–6pm. Dog friendly. Between Ashford and Canterbury lies Godmersham Park, once frequented by Jane Austen. Here, daffodils and spring bulbs brighten formal gardens, topiary, a walled kitchen garden and restored Italian and swimming pool gardens, alongside 24 acres of wilderness.

The house at Chartwell opens on 28 February and with it comes another chance to see the recently restored Uniform Room and the ‘Churchill: Image and Power’ exhibition featuring his iconic uniforms, siren suit and other special items that made Britain’s wartime prime minister one of the most recognisable figures of the 20th century.

Hellebores dot the borders at Chartwell while drifts of snowdrops lead the way at Emmetts Garden. Stroll along garden paths and woodland routes to take in the views across the Weald.

Winter wanders inspire winter warmers. The Landemare Café at Chartwell is a familiar favourite for National Trust drinks and snacks and features a large room for visitors bringing their dogs. Wonderful new gardens in Kent to visit in 2026 T

he garden visiting season begins in February with snowdrop and early spring openings, making now the perfect time to pick up the FREE National Garden Scheme 2026 Kent booklet.

Available from garden centres, local libraries, plant fairs and participating gardens, the booklet highlights over 100 gardens opening across the county.

“We have some wonderful new gardens opening in 2026 – large and small, urban and achingly rural – joining the many much-loved gardens which continue to open for us,” says Nic DenoonDuncan, National Garden Scheme Kent County Organiser. “We are incredibly lucky in Kent to be home to some of the finest private and public gardens in the UK.” The National Garden Scheme enjoyed another landmark year in 2025, raising a record £3,875,596 through garden openings nationwide.

These funds supported thousands of people living with cancer, Parkinson’s, poor mental health, or the pressures of unpaid caring, by funding nurses, health professionals and community case workers.

Support also extends to local initiatives through the Community Gardens Grant programme.

“This year I’ve had the pleasure of visiting allotment projects in Deal and Whitstable, a community kitchen garden, a developing garden space in Greenhithe, and the orchard at Rochester Cathedral,” says Nic Denoon-Duncan. “Each is a wonderful example of what can be achieved when

hino Boulder, Bromley’s climbing gym located in the town centre, has officially transitioned to a not for profit organisation, marking an important step in its commitment to people, community, and a modern, inclusive approach to climbing.

The move does not change how Rhino Boulder operates day to day, nor the experience climbers know and love. Instead, it formalises a shift from profit to purpose. All surplus revenue will now be reinvested directly back into the organisation, supporting staff, improving facilities, raising the quality of route setting, and growing community programmes.

Managing Director Thomas Broggi said, “Rhino Boulder has always been about more than

climbing. It is a social space, a place to challenge yourself, and somewhere people feel they belong.

Becoming a not for profit allows every pound spent here to go straight back into our community, our team, and the experience on the wall.”

ere at St Christopher’s The Hall, we recently launched a new initiative that is already making a powerful difference to our pupils, The Horizon Programme. It was created in response to something teachers and parents are noticing everywhere: children are growing up in an increasingly digital world, and many of the practical skills, social habits and deeper patterns of thinking that once developed naturally are becoming less familiar. The Horizon Programme is our way of bringing those essential experiences back into daily school life.

We see bright, capable children who can access information instantly, yet sometimes hesitate when faced with open-ended problems. Many find it challenging to maintain focus in a world full of digital distractions, and collaborative, faceto-face work can require more practice than it once did. Opportunities to build, create, explore and persevere, cornerstones of childhood, are becoming less frequent in a screen-led culture.

Horizon responds to this directly. Each week, pupils in Years 1–6 take part in purposeful, hands-on sessions built around four pillars: Character, Leadership, Sustainability and Life

Skills. These experiences help children rediscover the joy of working together, thinking deeply and developing the real-world confidence that cannot be learned through a screen.

The early impact has been remarkable. Pupils talk about Horizon sessions with genuine excitement. Teachers are observing stronger teamwork, improved perseverance and calmer, more intentional engagement. The programme has brought a renewed sense of curiosity, creativity and focus into the school week.

Already, pupils have explored themes such as sustainability, embracing practical challenges with maturity and ownership, a clear reminder of how much children flourish when given meaningful, real-world tasks. They have also taken part in activities designed to strengthen focus, practising how to slow down, tune out distractions and enjoy the satisfaction of deep, uninterrupted attention. These examples confirm that the skills we hoped to nurture were exactly the ones our pupils needed most.

And these are only the beginning. As the year continues, we will move into a range of practical Life Skills, the small but important tasks children once learned naturally but do not always encounter today. Pupils will learn how to change a bed, tie a tie, make a cup of tea safely, use simple tools, read basic instructions, plan a small budget, and even sew on a button. These may seem modest, yet they foster independence, confidence and a quiet sense of capability that stays with children for life. Parents often say, “I wish someone had taught me these things at school.”

Now, we are.

What makes The Horizon Project so powerful is both its warmth and its purpose. Q: Who does this work tend to resonate with most?

Often, it resonates with women who appear outwardly composed and successful.

Typically, they are in their late thirties through to their sixties. Many are navigating hormonal transition, recovering from childbirth, or re-entering intimacy after divorce or life change.

They have often tried creams, lubricants, or been told that what they are experiencing is “normal”. I always say that normal does not mean acceptable. If intimacy feels uncomfortable, or confidence has quietly shifted, that deserves proper medical attention.

Q: You are known for a highly medical, evidence-based approach. What distinguishes the way you practise intimate rejuvenation?

Medicine must lead everything I do. I trained at Guy’s and St Thomas’ School of Medicine, where anatomy, safety, and clinical governance were foundational. I later completed postgraduate training in women’s intimate health, advanced aesthetics and cosmetic dermatology, allowing me to combine medical precision with regenerative science.

I survived, and my daughter was born healthy. But the experience made me acutely aware of how women’s health, particularly intimate and hormonal health, is often minimised or overlooked. wner, Gail Thomas, explains how she got involved in this thriving business based in Badlesmere, just a few miles from Lenham on the Ashford Road.

Gail says: ‘I live at Eastwell Park, where my partner is the head keeper. Originally I was working for a national house builder selling houses but took voluntary redundancy. ‘ ‘Enjoying a brief period of being a lady of leisure, I popped into a local shop, the Kent Wool Growers, for a pair of Wellington boots. Whilst there trying on boots, I chatted to the assistant who told me he had just got himself a new job and

would be leaving. He then mentioned that they hadn’t filled the vacancy and that the job would be perfect for me!

And so I ended up working for Kent Wool Growers for 7 years; a great place, very interesting and with great customers, fantastic characters and never a dull moment. This is where I learnt all about clothing, footwear and – most importantly – good customer service.

Chatting to a friend whilst having lunch in my local, I mentioned that I might like to go it alone and open my own shop. She then told me about possible premises that were only a few miles from home! The very next morning I viewed and secured it straight away. So started the ‘In The Country’ venture here in Badlesmere. Over the years I have added to the stock and am proud to say, I offer a fantastic range of clothing, footwear and accessories for men, women and children – oh!

And mustn’t forget the dogs!

The shop has been open for nearly 9 years now and I can honestly say it was the best decision I have made and have never regretted it for a moment.’

ately, I’ve found myself thinking differently about what I buy. My wardrobe has been edited more times than I care to admit, trends have come and gone, and yet there are a handful of pieces I always return to.

Everyone Active, which operates Sevenoaks Leisure Centre in partnership with Sevenoaks District Council, has established itself as more than just a swimming school – it’s become a cornerstone of community fitness and youth development.

Long-term success stories are emerging from the programme. Adam Jaworski, a local parent, credits the centre’s approach for his son Shane’s remarkable journey. “From his first lessons at just 4 years old, Shane developed a genuine love for swimming,” Jaworski explained. “Now 18, his water confidence and technique are a direct result of the centre’s professional coaching.”

Choosing a care home is an important decision and one to be taken carefully. The best way to begin is by establishing your health and care requirements and preferences. You should also consider your budget. Then, you can start looking for care homes near you, viewing their available online information and requesting brochures.

Once you’ve made a shortlist of the best care homes, it’s essential to visit them in person.

1: Needs and Preferences This will vary from person to person, depending on care needs, lifestyle and priorities. Typically, you’ll be considering location, the type of care required, and medical conditions or impairments you need accommodated. Also the amenities and facilities, entertainment and activities, food and dining standards that are important to you.

Designed in partnership with Schmidt, the spaces reflect a seamless blend of minimalist form and thoughtful craftsmanship.

“We wanted something that felt cohesive with the rest of the home - modern, neutral, but with a real sense of character,” the homeowners explain. “The kitchen is now the centrepiece of family life. It is not just where we cook, it is where we gather.”

Central to the kitchen’s impact is the large island, with Bosca Stria doors. Their textured surface adds both visual depth and architectural flow.

To maintain an uncluttered aesthetic, the design intentionally omits wall units. Instead, Jumbo Line drawers and deep cabinetry offer discreet storage, while a generous walk-in pantry ensures everything has its place.
