And all Summer you can take part in a different craft activity each week in our Tipi. We are making cars that go (and launching them from ramps), we are building towers and towns and seeing how high we can go, we are designing and creating necklaces and making new friends from (very new, I promise) socks, and, finally, we will be making toad abodes from clay. Our Place, Your Past A celebration of local history and heritage at Quebec House

This September, Quebec House is taking part in Heritage Open Days, the annual celebration of heritage, community and history with free entry, talks, guided walks and family history research opportunities (Friday 11– 20 September (excluding Mondays and Tuesdays). © National Trust/Jen Reznick

It’s free to visit Quebec House during Heritage Open Days. Explore Wolfe’s childhood home as well as ‘The Story of the Westerham Foundlings’ exhibition in the Coach House. Meet ‘Mrs Wadham’ a costumed historic interpreter explaining the care of the children and the duties of the matron tasked with managing the Westerham branch of the Foundling Hospital in 1760 (12,13, 20 September). Supported by Findmypast, sponsor of this year’s ‘Everyday Histories’ theme, use interactive touchscreens in the Coach House to build your family tree and access billions of genealogy records. Art That Brings Gardens to Life S urrey Sculpture Society has been combining art & nature in beautiful outdoor settings for over 30 years. Its current exhibition at Riverhill Himalayan Gardens in Sevenoaks features a wide range of sculptures, all for sale and perfect for adding interest to any garden. But how do you choose the right one? Exhibition Manager, Caroline Wheaton, says: “We’re often asked how best to incorporate sculpture into ‘normal’ gardens. While there are a few things to consider, we believe every outdoor space can be enhanced by a well-chosen sculpture. They add character, interest and offer a year-round focal point. The most important thing is to buy something you love. Whether it’s the subject, the design or the craftsmanship, choose a piece you’ll enjoy for years to come. Size is an important practical consideration. You don’t want a sculpture to disappear among the plants or dominate the space. In smaller gardens or on balconies, compact works can create interest without overwhelming their surroundings. Amanda Randall’s Aldercone or one of Alison Catchlove’s bird sculptures are ideal choices.

A more substantial sculpture can become a striking focal point at the end of a path, beside a lawn or reflected in a pond. Leave enough space around it to appreciate it from different angles. Alex Smith’s Bound is a perfect example. Flower beds also benefit from sculptures that complement the planting. Delicate works such as Jane Henderson’s Stone Totems move gently in the breeze above grasses and shrubs adding structure throughout the year. Consider material too. Stone or wood might blend naturally into your surrounds like Julie Simpson’s Encircled Core installed neatly in the grass; metal might offer a more contemporary feel. Whatever the material, ensure it is durable enough for outdoor conditions just like all of the sculptures on display at Riverhill. Finally, think about light. Morning and evening sun can create beautiful shadows and reveal textures, while discreet lighting can make a sculpture equally dramatic after dark.” With thoughtful planning, the right sculpture can transform your outdoor space in every season. First Bite: The Piglet proves Locksbottom’s historic pub is in very safe hands

he Old Whyte Lion has entered an exciting new chapter. Reimagined as The Piglet, the historic Locksbottom coaching inn has been transformed into an ambitious food-led pub where exceptional British produce, warm hospitality and thoughtful cooking take centre stage. The refurbishment has been handled with a light touch. Original beams and period features have been retained, while warm earthy tones, elegant lighting and contemporary furnishings create a stylish yet relaxed setting that feels both fresh and reassuringly familiar. The menu celebrates seasonal British ingredients, and every dish we sampled demonstrated impressive confidence from the kitchen. The Scottish mackerel was beautifully fresh, its rich, oily flesh perfectly balanced with bright, vibrant accompaniments. The Pig’s Head Croquette was everything it should be, crisp on the outside, meltingly soft within and packed with deep, savoury flavour. Equally memorable was the BBQ Bromley Marsh lamb breast, slow-cooked until wonderfully tender with delicious smoky notes that lingered long after the final bite. The standard continued with the mains. The BBQ gilt-head black bream was expertly cooked, its delicate flesh complemented by subtle char and careful seasoning. The Romney Marsh lamb chop was outstanding, succulent, beautifully

pink and a superb showcase for the quality of the locally sourced meat. The beef sirloin was equally impressive, cooked precisely as requested, richly flavoured and accompanied by all the elements needed to let the exceptional beef speak for itself. Desserts rounded off the meal in equally impressive style. The Strawberries & Cream was a triumph: light, elegant and packed with the sweetness of perfectly ripe fruit, it captured the essence of British summer on a plate and was the standout dish of the afternoon. The indulgent Sticky Toffee Pudding delivered all the comforting richness you could hope for, while the silky Crème Brûlée cracked satisfyingly beneath its caramelised sugar topping to reveal a perfectly smooth vanilla custard. The Piglet succeeds because it combines serious cooking with the warmth and comfort of a neighbourhood pub. Beautifully restored, confidently run and serving food that consistently impresses, it has already established itself as one of the most exciting new restaurant openings in the area. www.thepiglet.pub

hen Hammond’s Wine Bar Oxted opened almost four years ago, the aim was simple: to create a welcoming space where people could relax, meet friends and enjoy great food and drink. Today, that original vision remains, but Hammond’s has evolved into far more than just a wine bar. Now firmly established as a dining destination, Hammond’s serves a popular set lunch Tuesday to Friday, a relaxed Saturday brunch, an all-day menu and what many regulars describe as “the best

Sunday roast ever.” Monthly gourmet evenings showcase five or eightcourse tasting menus with optional wine pairings. Head Chef Tommy Morriss leads the kitchen, creating modern British dishes inspired by classic French techniques. Every meal is freshly prepared using carefully sourced local ingredients, including fish from Chapmans of Sevenoaks and meat from Whitegate Farm in Kent, allowing quality produce to take centre stage. Wine remains at the heart of the Hammond’s experience. The carefully curated list features more than 100 wines, from classic French and Italian favourites to discoveries from Georgia, Bulgaria, Syria and Canada. What Should Sixth Form Be For?

hat should the final years of school be for? Examination preparation? Certainly. Securing a place at the university course of your choice? Undoubtedly. Yet at The King’s School Canterbury, the Sixth Form is built around a broader ambition: to give pupils the freedoms, responsibilities and intellectual opportunities that might not always be available elsewhere. The Problems with Dying Without a Will M

any people assume their estate will automatically pass to their loved ones when they die. However, if you die without a valid will (known as dying intestate), strict legal rules determine who inherits your assets. Rather than making matters simpler, dying without a will often creates unnecessary stress, delays, costs and disputes for those left behind. Your wishes may not be carried out Without a will, your estate is distributed according to the rules of intestacy rather than your personal wishes. These rules cannot reflect individual relationships or promises you may have made. As a result, unmarried partners, stepchildren, close friends and carers may receive nothing, regardless of the role they played in your life. Your family may not inherit as expected Many people are surprised to learn that intestacy rules do not always provide for loved ones as they expect. Although spouses and civil partners have legal rights, unmarried partners have no automatic entitlement to inherit. Where there is a surviving spouse and children, the estate may need to be shared between them, which can create financial difficulties and place pressure on the family home.
