Lights, Camera, Action!
On August 1st, 2024, Bromley’s beloved Picturehouse had to close its doors for good. With fewer customers and the rise of streaming services, it simply couldn’t keep up. But don’t worry—this isn’t the end of cinema in Bromley!
A group of us realised there was still a need for an alternative to the big, mainstream multiplex cinemas. And so, Social Cinema Bromley was born! Our mission? To bring people together through community screenings across Bromley— helping to combat loneliness and isolation, all while enjoying fantastic films together.
The response has been amazing! We’re incredibly proud to be sponsored by both the Bromley Borough Rotary and Chislehurst Rotary. Their support has helped us grow and strengthen our community connections. Plus, shoutout to Southey Brewing Co and the Wickham Theatre Centre—two incredible venues where the magic happens.
At our core, Social Cinema Bromley is all about kindness and community— creating spaces where people can connect and enjoy movies in a fresh, fun way. As how we watch films evolves, so does how we socialise. Every film we show is a chance for new connections, great conversations, and, of course, a quality cinema experience.
What’s next?
Big things are on the horizon for us this year! Think more films, new venues, and a focus on making cinema trips even more affordable. We’re building Bromley’s newest (and most exciting) cinema experience, and we couldn’t be more thrilled about the possibilities.
Let’s work together!
We’re always looking for ways to collaborate with local partners who share our passion for community and connection. Whether it’s new venues, sponsors, or creative ideas, we’re open to it all. And of course, we’re always on the lookout for enthusiastic volunteers to join the team and help us bring our vision to life.
Want to join us?
Head to our website: www.socialcinemabromley.co.uk to sign up for our newsletter or even volunteer with us. Come be a part of the story!

Celebrate the 80th Anniversary of VE Day at National Trust Chartwell
On 8 May 1945, Prime Minister Winston Churchill stood on a balcony overlooking Whitehall and declared “This is your victory”, but as the crowds cheered there seemed no doubt as to where their gratitude lay. Though the Second World War continued on other fronts, VE Day was a moment of collective celebration across the UK.
The 8th of May 2025 marks 80 years since the Allied victory in Europe over Nazi Germany in 1945. Celebrate VE Day 80 at Chartwell, the
family home of Britain’s wartime leader Sir Winston Churchill, with dedicated programming, new tours, exhibitions and special events throughout May.
On the Early May Bank Holiday weekend, living history characters present family-friendly demonstrations and hands-on activities, 3-5 May. Mark the anniversary on Thursday 8 May with live music in the grounds. Music and dance groups also perform on 10-11 May.
Extend the fun at an afterhours event. Saturday 3 May is outdoor cinema night. Book tickets for ‘Operation Mincemeat’, starring Colin Firth. Complete the experience with refreshments from the food and drink stalls. Secure your place at the champagne picnic on Saturday 10 May for a glass of Churchill’s favourite tipple and outdoor entertainment.
Throughout the month, pick up timed-entry tickets from the visitor centre (or pre-book online for an afternoon slot) to visit the house. See informative displays and special objects including VE Day gifts and first-hand accounts from Churchill’s secretaries and family members. Don’t miss the historic audio recordings. VE Day stories from the local community are displayed in the Exhibition room.
Book onto the ‘This is your victory’ VE Day guided Highlights Tour of the house to gain insights into Churchill’s defining role as Britain’s wartime leader. (Monday-Friday, excluding Bank Holidays, 28 April-27 June, additional fee).
The children’s trail in the garden lasts all month long, not just the May half term. Bring the family to find out about wartime life at Chartwell and VE Day celebrations (additional fee, includes a prize).
Don’t forget to visit the café for your favourite National Trust treats and stop by the gift shop for souvenirs.

Hever Castle & Gardens
Celebration of Spring
Hever Castle & Gardens is a ‘celebration of spring’ in three dimensions as colourful spring blooms bring the drama and flower-power this month.
Tens of thousands of later flowering daffodils join hands with thousands of tulips and spring flowering bulbs across the Estate in April to produce a mass of blooms in a rainbow of different colours.
The woodlands are home to more wilder spring display of daffodils and bluebells, and close to the Golden Staircase a long walk of rhododendrons and azaleas are getting ready to burst forth in a myriad of reds, pinks and whites. Close by on Two Sisters’ Lawn, tulips are planted in miniature rainbow designs, while over in the Italian Garden, created by William Waldorf Astor at the turn of the 20th century, block colour planting of tulips and spring bedding create stunning points of interest.
Neil Miller, head gardener for over 20 years at Hever Castle & Gardens says: “Project Spring has been something that myself and the team have been working on over the last decade. In celebration of Easter and all that is ‘spring’, we have boosted even further the numbers of camassias in Anne Boleyn’s Orchard, the tulips in the Italian Garden, trimmed the azaleas to perfection, planted thousands of later flowering daffodils with the help of daffodil expert Johnny Walkers, and Anne Boleyn’s Orchard is a marvel in spring with blossom galore.”
Visitors can enjoy self-guided tours from 31st March - 5th May and during the week of 22nd27th April the gardening team will be leading tours and providing a unique insight into the celebration of spring at Hever Castle.
With Hever Castle & Gardens Celebration of Spring running for an extended period this year from 31st March - 5th May, (and including Easter and the first Bank Holiday in May), there’s proof, if anyone needed it, that spring is perhaps the most important season of the gardening year.

Spring at Ightham Mote
Family Easter Adventures and Wartime Remembrance
As the days lengthen and the stunning gardens burst into bloom, a visit to Ightham Mote is the perfect way to embrace the joys of spring with familyfriendly Easter fun and a celebration of VE Day’s 80th anniversary.
Families can enjoy a fun outdoor experience over the school holiday with Easter Adventures at Ightham Mote until 21 April. The Chase the Chooks trail invites visitors to complete hen-themed activities and challenges around the house and garden. Endeavours are rewarded with a delicious chocolate egg!
May brings reflection and celebration as Ightham Mote marks VE Day 80 with two themed weekends over the bank holidays, starting with the opening of an Ightham at War exhibition on 2 May. This fascinating exhibition unveils the wartime experiences of Sir James ColyerFergusson and Helmut Ortner, two men whose lives were entwined with Ightham Mote during World War II. Through letters, photographs, and artifacts, their remarkable stories come to life in this specially curated display.
Over the Early May Bank Holiday, families can immerse themselves in Home Front history with hands-on sessions including make do and mend, food rationing, and air raids, as well as visit from an authentic Talbot ambulance used during The Blitz.
On 10 April, creative hands can turn ordinary clothes pegs into cute, but practical, keepsakes at free drop-in sessions, and local puppetry theatre company, Strangeface, will be running a chicken puppet workshop, learning how to make a quirky, feathery friend to take home, on 17 April.
For photography enthusiasts, a bluebell walk on 27 April offers the perfect opportunity to capture the breathtaking carpets of bluebells in Scathes Wood, guided by local photographer Mary Allwood.
On 24 and 25 May, Up and At ‘Em! returns with their inimitable fun and fascinating take on wartime Kent.
Rounding off the commemoration on Sunday 25 May, the Biggin Hill Band will provide a rousing soundtrack including some wartime classics to a picnic on the lawn.
With a season full of adventure and nostalgia, Ightham Mote is a must-visit destination this spring.
Visit the website for more details and see what else is happening at Ightham Mote.

Sittingbourne & Kemsley Light Railway
The Sittingbourne & Kemsley Light Railway is celebrating Railway 200, along with most other railways in the UK, which is a year-long celebration of the start of modern railways 200 years ago, but the Railway is also celebrating 120 years of steam locomotion as steam locomotives ‘Premier’ and ‘Leader’ took over train operations from Sittingbourne Paper Mill’s horses.
Trains run every Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday until the end of September, with a number of special events planned throughout the season (see our ad). Trains will be hauled by steam locomotive ‘Premier’ (yes, the original loco) until ‘Melior’ returns to service later this year.
The Railway operates between Sittingbourne Viaduct station (in Sittingbourne Retail Park)
“We have completely rebuilt the platform at Sittingbourne Viaduct station and are step-free from the street to the train”
and Kemsley Down (within the active Kemsley Paper Mill), the journey takes 15 minutes and is unapologetically industrial as the train crosses the kilometre-long, century-old concrete Milton Regis Viaduct before passing through Milton Creek Country Park and Church Marshes. You can travel back on a later train if you’d like. We have completely rebuilt the platform at Sittingbourne Viaduct station and are stepfree from the street to the train. This £50,000 investment in the station has come from a number of funding sources from Swale Borough Council, Government, Councillors and our own member donations. Local business also helped with reduced prices and a fantastic donation of concrete parts for the new platform from Ibstock.
Kemsley Down station is our main base, here you will find the Footplate Café, museum, shop and museum walk. See the different types of wagons alongside museum walk, visit the wildlife garden or sit outside whilst the kids play on the ride-on toys. Both stations have accessible toilets.
Return fares are £9 for adults, £8 for senior citizens, £4.50 for children aged 3-15, under 3s go free. We have a family ticket for two adults and up to four children for £24. Single and rover fares are also available – see the website for details.

Which location has the greatest charm? Coast vs Country
From stunning coastal scenery and bracing sea air to the rolling green serenity and background birdsong of the countryside, Kent is home to an abundance of beautiful places to buy a home. But which holds the most charm – coast or country? We’re putting two collections of new homes by Elivia Homes in the spotlight to find out…
Launching in April, Kingsgate Place in Broadstairs is a scenic coastal collection of 24 beautifully designed properties. Seaside homes in Kent are aplenty, but the impressive location of these new houses delivers unparalleled views that stretch across the greenery of North Foreland Golf Courses to the sea with many of the five and six bedroom homes enjoying a gorgeous sea view.
Situated north of the popular and historic seaside town of Broadstairs, Kingsgate Place offers all the benefits associated with coastal living. Joss Bay, which Kingsgate Place overlooks, has been home to a thriving surf school for more than 25 years, with stand-up paddle boarding also on offer. The local coast is popular with sea swimmers, whilst the restorative sea air and marvellous views provide an inspiring backdrop for runs and cycle rides.
Before you drop everything and move to the seaside, it’s important to note that countryside living also has enticing benefits.
Situated in the country village of Staple, Summerfield is home to 17 exquisitely crafted homes, including 11 impressive, four-bedroom detached houses. Generously sized gardens and a landscaped green with a pond mirror the abundance of nature surrounding the site.
Being part of a closeknit community and spending time outdoors are key attractions of countryside living. Staple firmly ticks both boxes, with villagers enjoying an active social life, the highlight of which is the annual Staple Country Fayre. Parent, toddler and youth groups meet regularly in the village, as does the Staple Short Mat Bowls Club.
The Kent countryside is also home to an array of pick-your-own farms, fruit juice producers, farm shops, cheese makers and bakeries, celebrating the best of local produce in the ‘garden of England’.
Torn between the temptations of the countryside and the charms of the coast? Why not book viewings at Kingsgate Place and Summerfield to find out more?
Prices at Summerfield start from £800,000. Prices start from £600,000 at Kingsgate Place. To find out more on both developments, visit www.eliviahomes.co.uk

Chislehurst Netball Club Celebrating 50 Years of Community and Success
Founded during the 1975-1976 season, Chislehurst Netball Club has come a long way from its beginnings. Initially starting with one team, the club played in various local leagues, fast forward to today, and the club has expanded significantly, now fielding four teams in divisions 2, 5, 6, and 9 of the North West Kent League, along with three teams in the Whiteoak League.
A key figure in the club’s history is Joan Mills, one of the founding members. Joan’s contributions to the sport have been extraordinary, and she currently serves as the President of England Netball. In 2016, Joan was awarded an MBE for her exceptional service to netball, a testament to her lifelong dedication to the game.
The continued success of Chislehurst Netball Club is due to the efforts of members like Joan and Maureen Martyn. Their vision in the club’s early days laid the foundation for the strong sense of community that remains at the club today. With over 56 player’s, the club continues to thrive.
Val Keable, the club’s long-standing captain, has been a part of Chislehurst Netball for 35 years. She witnessed the club’s expansion from one team, to now four. Val has played a key role as a player,

umpire, and organiser. Her contributions to both the club and Kent Netball earned her a Lifetime Membership to England Netball. On any Saturday, you can find Val at Bromley High, whether she’s umpiring, scoring, organising, or just watching the game she loves.
Marilyn, the club’s Secretary, is the driving force behind its organisation. Her planning of fixtures, team arrangements, and her warm welcome to all members ensure the smooth running of the club.
Chislehurst Netball Club is a close-knit group of women who not only enjoy playing netball but also socialising with regular social events the club continues a strong sense of camaraderie.

New Era of Elegant Dining
Chislehurst’s culinary scene has just received a dazzling upgrade with the relaunch of Fish Union. Following an extensive refurbishment, the beloved local seafood spot has transformed into a stunning restaurant and bar, ushering in a new era of elegant dining and laid-back luxury.
The revitalised space strikes a perfect balance between modern sophistication and warm, inviting design. Credit for the transformation goes to local designers Guthrie & Kirkwood, whose vision has brought a fresh energy to the venue, and to Saunters, who delivered the building works with exceptional craftsmanship. Both teams have done a terrific job and should be proud of their achievements.
The refurbishment hasn’t just refreshed the interiors—it’s redefined the entire experience.
A highlight of the relaunch is the thoughtfully curated menu, which features a selection of innovative and beautifully presented dishes. While Fish Union continues to honour its roots in fresh, sustainable seafood, the new additions include meats, sourced by Carnivore butchers. Perhaps most exciting of all is the addition of a sleek new bar, elevating Fish Union from neighbourhood gem to destination venue. An expertly crafted classic cocktail list now complements the menu, perfect for an aperitif or a nightcap.
This relaunch isn’t just a facelift—it’s a bold step forward. With its stylish new look, creative cuisine, and inviting atmosphere, Fish Union has reaffirmed its place at the heart of Chislehurst’s dining community. What is the role of a good Prep School?
Tom Quilter, Headmaster at Bickley Park School discusses how a modern-day Prep School can best prepare our children for a rapidly changing world
When considering the role of a Prep School, something that I often ask staff to reflect on is ‘How do we prepare our children for such a rapidly changing future?’ Thankfully, the rather old fashioned and clichéd view of a traditional Prep School is largely outdated. Stuffy classrooms, fliptop desks and rote learning are very much a thing of the past, as is the justification for a curriculum focused purely on preparation for exams. The modern-day Prep School must consider how best to prepare children for whatever their future may look like, in an ever-developing world whilst also retaining established yet relevant core values.
Outstanding Results
It has long been our aim to ensure our leavers are confident, articulate and well-rounded members of society, ready to take their place in an increasingly complex and interconnected world. Like many top schools, we have a long history of excellent exam results at both 11+ and 13+. Indeed, we have seen fantastic success for our leavers with children heading onto some of the UK’s top independent and Grammar Schools, with a total of 44 scholarships being awarded across the board over the past 2 years alone. However, we are determined that our ‘preparation’ goes well beyond results. By providing a truly broad and balanced curriculum that embraces
innovation, we seek to prepare our children for whatever future challenges they are faced with. We prepare them for life!
Broad and Balanced Learning
Our curriculum is based around what we call the Four Quadrants of Learning - the pillars of our curriculum in Academics, Arts, Sport and Outdoors and Community. It was this very approach that we were so proud to have commended as ‘coherent and holistic’ when we won the Independent Prep School of the Year award in 2021.
Some of the most recent and innovative developments within the Four Quadrants include ‘Adventure school’ - our exciting outdoor residential education programme for all our pupils in Years 3 –8 and, our Innovation, Computing & Engineering (I.C.E) curriculum.
Adventure school aims to foster teamwork and leadership skills, whilst developing independence and the ability to manage risk. The programme sees all children in Years 3 to 8 taking part in residential trips which focus on progressively demanding survival skills and challenges. From camping in the
“At Bickley Park, we aim to develop confidence, resilience and respect, so that our children are in the best position that they can be to pursue happy and successful lives, whatever they go on to do.”
THE DETAILS
Please come and visit. You can book on a tour or register for our next Nursery & Reception Open Morning on Saturday 17th May by contacting our Registrar on 0208 467 2195 or admissions@bickleyparkschool.co.uk or visiting our website at: bickleyparkschool.co.uk/ admissions/visit-us
Peak District and the South Downs to a Kayaking adventure along the Cornish Coast, the trips are fun, exciting and motivational. This neatly builds on to the regular Forest School sessions that our younger children in Nursery to Year 2 take part in, exploring local woodland or developing outdoor skills on site that foster an understanding and respect for the natural world.
Innovation, Computing and Engineering lessons aim to encourage critical thinking, with an emphasis on digital strategy incorporating the use of ipads to support learning across the board, including art and design as well as computing and robotics.
In addition, regular events such as our annual Spring Term production - this year an incredible staging of ‘Shrek the Musical’ - develops key skills of self-expression, confidence, performance and collaboration.
Core Values
Our ‘preparation’ shouldn’t stop there. In addition to developing resilient, curious and confident children, a good Prep School should also aim to foster kindness, inclusion and respect too. Here at Bickley Park, we pride ourselves in being a kind school that celebrates and embraces diversity, so we were thrilled to have this highlighted as a key strength in our most recent ‘Excellent’ ISI report when inspectors said, ‘Pupils embrace the diversity they experience within the school community and develop strong friendships irrespective of cultural differences.’ ISI March 2023.
So how do we best prepare our children for the challenges they are likely to face?
At Bickley Park, we aim to develop confidence, resilience and respect, so that our children are in the best position that they can be to pursue happy and successful lives, whatever they go on to do.
In short, we encourage them to live our values and ‘Be All You Can Be’.
Celebrating Our Sixth Form University Offers
At Bishop Challoner School, we take immense pride in the achievements of our Sixth Form students, who have once again secured outstanding university offers. This year, our students have received offers from some of the UK’s most prestigious institutions, including the University of Exeter, University of Southampton, University of Surrey, University of Sussex, Queen’s University Belfast, University of Warwick, University of Nottingham, and University of Reading.
first-choice universities, including highly competitive Russell Group institutions. This remarkable statistic highlights the strength of our academic and pastoral support, ensuring that students not only achieve their potential but also gain entry into their preferred destinations.
Our Sixth Form programme is designed to nurture independent thinkers and confident individuals, equipping them with the skills and knowledge to thrive in higher education and beyond. Accommodating Parental Needs
How schools can stay competitive and relevant in an ever-changing world
Education is constantly evolving, and schools must be able to adjust to new trends, technologies, and societal shifts. Five years on from the start of the pandemic, families’ work schedules, home locations, and personal circumstances have evolved: people in 2025 simply manage their time differently. By offering a range of provisions, schools can ensure that education remains accessible, effective and future-ready, that parental choice can be met, and that every pupil is able to find an environment in which they can thrive. Long recognised as one of the world’s finest boarding schools, The King’s School Canterbury is embracing this changing world and helping parents better balance their commitments with the introduction of flexi-boarding, the expansion of day provision, and the launch of a new school bus network this Autumn.
A fourth, new Day House will open at King’s in September, providing all the benefits of boarding
“Offering versatility in provision helps King’s families to choose the environment that best suits their individual needs”
(access to extracurricular activities, sports, and time with friends) while giving day pupils the opportunity of returning home to their families in the evening.
The introduction of flexi boarding will enhance this provision by offering these pupils the choice of boarding on specific nights of the week or during certain periods of the school term: a great middle-ground for families with irregular schedules or those who travel often.
To further support families, ease logistical challenges for parents, and widen accessibility, a new school bus network is also being launched for the first time to serve local areas.
Offering versatility in provision helps King’s families to choose the environment that best suits their individual needs, and ensures that every child feels uniquely supported, both academically and emotionally.

St Dunstan’s College celebrates historic girls’ football success
This March, St Dunstan’s College, Catford, London, was delighted to celebrate historic success in girls’ football with two senior teams reaching national finals and a junior squad winning their local tournament.
In the senior school, two teams have reached national finals marking a new chapter of sporting success for south London’s award-winning school.
St Dunstan’s year 9/10 girls’ team have reached the final of the U15 ISFA Shield, a prestigious national competition for independent schools. The journey for the girls started back in September. Along the way, St Dunstan’s have had to overcome tough competition with matches against Wellington College, Chigwell School, Colfe’s School and then
“Both our senior girls’ squads have had a fantastic season, and the cup runs have elevated the status of St Dunstan’s girls’ football on a national level.”
a semi-final in Southampton to take on the Gregg School. The semi final resulted in a fantastic 4-0 win for the girls earning them a place in the ISFA final, against Stephen Perse Foundation.
Meanwhile, the year 7/8 girls’ team have also had a great cup run which resulted in them reaching the final of the U13 Girls’ ISFA Cup. On route, St Dunstan’s girls have had to overcome City of London Girls School, Highgate School, Ardingly College and Wimbledon High School before beating favourites Surbiton High in the semi-final after a tense penalty shoot-out. Both teams are now preparing for their finals, which take place in the next few weeks.
St Dunstan’s Head of Football, Paul Palmer, said: ‘Both our senior girls’ squads have had a fantastic
season, and the cup runs have elevated the status of St Dunstan’s girls’ football on a national level.’
St Dunstan’s Junior School year 4 girls’ team have also been celebrating success on the pitch. Taking part in the local Girls’ Under 9 Tournament, the girls were victorious following a final with Alleyn’s School.
The football success comes just over a year after St Dunstan’s announced a groundbreaking partnership with Chelsea FC Foundation. As part of the partnership, Chelsea FC Foundation now have a full-time officer based at the school to develop the new programme working closely with the St Dunstan’s team and to reach out and build relationships across Lewisham.
Speaking at the time, St Dunstan’s Education Group’s CEO, Nick Hewlett said: ‘We are delighted to announce this new partnership with Chelsea FC Foundation. Sport at St Dunstan’s has been on an incredible journey in recent years, and this is the next exciting chapter in our history.
‘We are passionate about our local community, and I am particularly pleased that this new partnership will not only benefit our pupils, but young people across the whole borough. It really does have the potential to transform football across south-east London.’
St Dunstan’s Assistant Head, Co-curricular, Danny Gower, added: ‘Sport plays such a key role in supporting the development of character. Young people learn about themselves; how they respond to challenges and pressure, how they work with teammates and opponents and about the culture that they perform within.
‘Whilst developing individuals, sport is also uniquely placed to bring communities together. We are delighted to have found a partner in Chelsea FC Foundation who are as committed to delivering experiences that enrich the lives of people across this community.’
St Dunstan’s College, located in Catford, southeast London, is one of London’s leading independent schools, having been named Senior School of the Year at the 2022 Tes Schools Awards and Most Progressive School in South-East England at the 2024 Private Education Awards.

This partnership is full of exciting possibilities, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds.
This month, we speak to Head of St Christopher’s The Hall, Tom Carter, as the Beckenham prep school marks a new era as it joins St Dunstan’s Education Group.
What makes St Christopher’s The Hall such a special and unique place?
St Christopher’s The Hall is a special place where every child can truly shine. It’s a school filled with encouragement, fun, and a real sense of belonging. We work hard to ensure that every child feels happy, supported, and ready to take on challenges with confidence. What makes St Christopher’s unique is how we celebrate each child for who they are. Differences are embraced, talents are discovered, and everyone feels free to be themselves. Here, every day is an opportunity for children to grow into curious,
confident, and kind individuals. Whether they’re trying something new, working together, or simply enjoying the journey, we help them feel safe to believe in themselves, have fun learning, and feel ready for whatever comes next. It’s a place where anything feels possible, and that’s what makes it so special.
At St Christopher’s, we also believe in the power of working together with parents as partners in their child’s learning journey. We regularly invite parents to engage with the school community and take part in parent partnership events to give them a sense of our curriculum where they can experience first-hand how their children are learning. This collaboration strengthens the bond between home and school, ensuring that every child feels supported both in and out of the classroom. By fostering this sense of partnership and celebrating every child’s individuality,
St Christopher’s creates a nurturing environment where children can thrive and discover their full potential.
St Christopher’s recently announced it was joining St Dunstan’s Education Group, please can you tell us more about this and the benefits to the community?
St Christopher’s joining St Dunstan’s Education Group is such an exciting step for our school community. It’s not about needing to make a change—it’s about making a great school even better and planning for an even brighter future. Both schools share the same values and a commitment to putting children at the heart of everything we do, so this partnership feels like a natural fit. The benefits are huge. By working together, we’ll have access to more expertise, resources, and opportunities, which means an even richer experience for our pupils. This could include new extracurricular activities, enhanced support for every child, and even more investment in facilities and learning experiences. It’s not just about the here and now—it’s about making sure St Christopher’s stays strong and continues to thrive in a changing world. Both schools are in a great place, and teaming up like this means we can build on our strengths and offer even more to our children and families. However, the best part is it is all about helping every child here to grow, explore, and succeed. This partnership is full of exciting possibilities, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds!
How does St Christopher’s The Hall balance academic excellence and the students wellbeing?
Pastoral care is at the heart of everything we do, and we take great pride to have an environment where everyone is welcome, valued, and celebrated. We believe that no child is the same, but everyone is equal, and this underpins our commitment to creating a community where every child feels supported and confident to be themselves. By fostering a positive growth mind-set, we help children believe in their abilities and develop resilience. This approach
“Whether they’re trying something new, working together, or simply enjoying the journey, we help them feel safe to believe in themselves, have fun learning, and feel ready for whatever comes next”
encourages them to embrace challenges and see mistakes as part of the learning process. We also focus on teaching kindness, empathy, and how to build strong relationships, knowing that these life skills have a lasting impact on their character and their ability to thrive. This commitment to wellbeing directly supports academic excellence. When children feel happy, valued, and safe, they’re more likely to engage fully with their learning. We make sure every child is given the tools, encouragement, and support they need to achieve their potential and aim high. Through tailored teaching, a broad and exciting curriculum, and a nurturing environment, we create the conditions for every child to excel academically while developing as confident, well-rounded individuals. At St Christopher’s, we’re not simply solely focused on results—we’re focused on the whole child. By balancing academic ambition with exceptional pastoral care, we prepare our pupils not only for their next steps in education but for a happy and successful future.
What do you enjoy most about your role as Head of St Christopher’s?
Being Head of St Christopher’s is, without a doubt, the best job in the world! I’m lucky enough to spend my days surrounded by laughter, curiosity, and the boundless energy of young people. Every day is different, and there’s always something that makes me smile—it’s the best kind of medicine. What I love most is seeing children grow and blossom during their time here. Watching them discover new things, build their confidence, and develop into thoughtful, kind, and resilient individuals is incredibly rewarding. Being part of their journey and knowing that we’re helping them prepare for whatever the future holds is a privilege I don’t take lightly.

OIN THE COUNTRY
Your local store for all outdoor clothing for the whole family, plus shooting accessories, leather goods, dog training equipment, and much more.
wner, Gail Thomas, explains how she got involved in this thriving business based in Badlesmere, just a few miles from Lenham on the Ashford Road.
Gail says: ‘I live at Eastwell Park, where my partner is the head keeper. Originally I was working for a national house builder selling houses but took voluntary redundancy. ‘
‘Enjoying a brief period of being a lady of leisure, I popped into a local shop, the Kent Wool Growers, for a pair of Wellington boots. Whilst there trying on boots, I chatted to the assistant who told me he had just got himself a new job and
would be leaving. He then mentioned that they hadn’t filled the vacancy and that the job would be perfect for me!
And so I ended up working for Kent Wool Growers for 7 years; a great place, very interesting and with great customers, fantastic characters and never a dull moment. This is where I learnt all about clothing, footwear and – most importantly – good customer service.
Chatting to a friend whilst having lunch in my local, I mentioned that I might like to go it alone and open my own shop. She then told me about possible premises that were only a few miles from home! The very next morning I viewed and secured it straight away. So started the ‘In The Country’ venture here in Badlesmere. Over the years I have added to the stock and am proud to say, I offer a fantastic range of clothing, footwear and accessories for men, women and children – oh! And mustn’t forget the dogs!
The shop has been open for nearly 9 years now and I can honestly say it was the best decision I have made and have never regretted it for a moment.’

THE BEST WAYS TO STYLE STRIPES THIS SEASON
Tried-and-true outfit formulas to elevate stripes this spring… By Lara Owen
As the ‘fisherman aesthetic’ was predicted to be one of 2025’s biggest trends, styling stripes is set to take a new approach this season. With spring’s unpredictable weather, sticking to a tried-and-true formula becomes routine.
But having a formula doesn’t mean boring. Whether you’re sporting navy-and-white-striped Breton tees or taking inspiration from Gucci’s sorbet-coloured cardigans, fashion experts go through the best way to style stripes this season.
Invest in the staples
neck, barrel jeans and shades – or opt for a more preppy and polished look with a buttoned cardigan and pleated skirt.
Pair with denim
There’s no greater match than stripes and denim, but this doesn’t mean navy white and blue.
Colourful stripes with ecru jeans –or muted stripes with khaki denim are great ways to mix print and texture.
While some striped trends come and go, investing in staple stripes is essential for elevating your outfits year after year. The classic navy and white combo is sported time and again by the likes of Sienna Miller and the Princess of Wales. While a slim fit is timeless, more oversized styles are in this season, thanks to the ‘fisherman aesthetic’.
“This influence of ‘fisherman style’ means stripes are less polished and more effortless [this season], often paired with oversized silhouettes, half-tucked tops, and relaxed tailoring,” explains fashion expert and celebrity stylist Oriona Robb.
Go big with colour
This season, designers are experimenting with a more maximalist approach to stripes, combining juxtaposing yellows and blues to statement pieces.
“Colour-wise, it’s about playful combos,” says Robb. While nautical navy and whites are still in the mix, “powder blue and butter yellow are big this season” explains fashion expert Karine Laudort, “along with sage green and cream. Red and cream stripes are also having a major moment,” says Robb, “adding a Parisian-chic touch to any outfit.” You can channel this with a roll
If you’re looking for something lighter than denim, then linen and cream tones are a perfect pairing. “A striped top with cream linen trousers or a beige blazer brings a chic and polished touch,” says Laudort. “Otherwise for an edgier look, stripes contrast beautifully with the richness of a suede skirt or leather boots, balancing casual and luxe.”
Don’t dismiss accessories
Suede continues to be big this season, and a slouchy suede bag or boat shoes can elevate any striped tee and denim jean combo. If you’re wanting to lean into colourful stripes, swap your white trainers out for metallic pumps to make the look that much more interesting. If you’re keeping it really simple with a one-and-done stripe – don’t forget to play up the jewels with a chunky necklace and matching earrings.

Best-selling and accessible expertise for the home and more
One of the best-selling non-fiction books on Amazon is ‘The Let Them Theory’, by Mel Robbins, also known for The 5 Second Rule. Mel says this “is the secret to changing anything about your life.”
Many people love an expert and are guided by them. Other widelyfollowed figures include Steven Bartlett (business, The Diary Of A CEO) and Matthew Walker (health, Why We Sleep).
Quite clearly, then, experts are popular, because they can provide a route to success, improving life, health, finances, and more. That means that experts are needed, but are they accessible?
Well-known experts in the field of homes and property include interior designer Laurence Llewellyn-Bowen, architect George Clarke, presenter of George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces, and Kevin McCloud, lighting expert and presenter of Grand Designs.
“If I was going to write a book advising people how to run a property project successfully and had to sum it up in a few words, it would be, ’Get the team right at the start.’”
It might not be straightforward to gain advice directly from Laurence, George, or Kevin.
However, for property owners in the southeast of England looking to renovate their home or to build a new one, accessible expertise is available.
Tony Cheeseman, Kent-based Founder and Director of IQ Property Services, has been project managing new builds and renovations successfully for decades. Tony is an industry expert who has previously contributed to official initiatives in the construction industry. He is used to helping people navigate their way through the labyrinth of red tape, rules, misinformation, and mismanagement that can await the unwary property owner.
“There is usually a big cast of players in a project,” says Tony, “From architects to builders, numerous trades such as plumbers and electricians, interior designers, landscapers, and more. I love to pull them together for a client, set the scene, and plan out how things will go, monitor progress, and, when needed, step in to sort things out.”
“If I was going to write a book advising people how to run a property project successfully and had to sum it up in a few words, it would be, ’Get the team right at the start.’
“I am happy to talk to anyone who would like some advice.” Interested? You can give Tony a call on 01959 533788.

Using tiles to create the illusion of space
With a Ripples bathroom design specialist
Designing a small bathroom comes with its fair share of challenges, limited space, tight layouts, and the need to balance functionality with style. But with the right tile choices, you can completely transform the space and create the illusion of something much larger and more luxurious. Here, Jenna, Designer from Ripples Tunbridge Wells, talks through some clever strategies that really make a difference in how a small bathroom feels and functions.
Opt for Larger Format Tiles
brighter and more open. Placing these tiles on a feature wall or in the shower area can draw the eye upward, creating the illusion of height.
Lay Tiles Vertically to Add Height
It might seem counterintuitive, but using larger tiles can make a compact bathroom appear bigger. Fewer grout lines mean less visual clutter, creating a seamless and open look. Large tiles in neutral tones contribute to an elegant and uncluttered aesthetic.
Choose Light and Bright Colours
Light hues like soft whites, pale greys, and pastels reflect more light, enhancing the sense of openness. Combining these colours with strategic lighting can further amplify the spacious feel. Subtle patterns or textures add depth without overwhelming the space.
Utilise Glossy Finishes for Reflectivity
Glossy or high-shine tiles act like mirrors, reflecting light and making the bathroom feel
The orientation of tiles influences spatial perception. Vertical placement, especially with longer rectangular tiles like subway tiles, draws the eye upward, giving an impression of increased ceiling height. Pairing vertical tiling with tall mirrors or elongated fixtures can enhance this effect.
Consider Continuous Flooring
Extending the same tile from the bathroom floor into the shower area without interruption creates a continuous visual flow, making the space feel larger. This approach minimises visual barriers and enhances the sense of openness. By thoughtfully selecting and arranging tiles, you can transform a small bathroom into a space that feels both luxurious and spacious.

Spring into the Growing Season
There’s a special kind of magic in the air come spring – the days get longer, the sun feels warmer, and gardens everywhere begin to wake up. April is a turning point for UK gardeners – one of the most exciting months as the growing season kicks off. And we’re here to help you make the most of it. While spring flowers often steal the spotlight, the vegetable garden is quietly making a comeback. Whether you’ve got an allotment, a raised bed, or a few containers on your patio, there’s plenty you can start with. A little planning and the right setup will go a long way.
If you’ve got a greenhouse, polytunnel, or cold frame, you’re already ahead of the curve, sowing tender varieties early. Even without one, you can still sow a surprising range of vegetables outdoors as the soil warms. Choose a sunny, free-draining
spot – and if your soil is heavy or slow to warm, raised beds can make a huge difference. Short on space? Containers are perfect for growing close to home. Salad leaves, herbs, and radishes thrive in pots, making it easy to keep fresh produce at your fingertips.
So, where should you begin? Hardy crops like carrots, beetroot, lettuce, and peas can go straight into the ground. Warmer vegetables like courgettes, tomatoes, sweetcorn, and squash should be sown indoors or in a greenhouse, ready to move outside once the frost risk has passed. April is also the perfect time to plant potatoes, onion sets, shallots, garlic, and even Jerusalem artichokes. If fruit is on your mind, potted fruit trees and bushes, like apples, currants, gooseberries, figs, and citrus, can go in now too.
At Coblands, we’ve got everything you need to hit the ground growing. From vegetable plug plants and fruit trees to raised beds, compost, grow bags, seeds, and potting mediums – we’ve stocked up to help you stock your garden. We also carry the essential extras: tools, trellis, containers, twine, labels, and clever accessories to make gardening easier and more rewarding.
Whether you have a sprawling garden or a sunny windowsill, now’s the time to dig in, sow seeds, and grow something great. Visit Coblands Garden Centre – where spring begins, and your growing journey takes root.

The characteristics of shaker vs modern kitchens
Choosing the perfect style of kitchen for your home is incredibly personal.
A bespoke, handmade kitchen gives you complete freedom with the design – from layout, materials, and appliances, to the part that determines your kitchen’s personality: the style of cabinetry. Both shaker and modern style kitchens endure in popularity, and they continue to evolve in design, but what are their distinct characteristics?
Shaker – a timeless classic
Shaker cabinetry originated from the Shaker communities who were selfsufficient and crafted their own furniture, creating a design that reflected the simplicity of their lifestyle.
Features of a shaker kitchen:
• Symmetrical design.
• Simple, classic look of a central panel framed with horizontal ‘rails’ and vertical ‘styles’.
• Minimal detailing to evoke the original design.
• Versatile for both contemporary and traditional homes, built as ‘in frame’ with butt hinges, or as more contemporary soft-close ‘lay on’ with German-style hinges.
A traditional five-piece door using European oak highlights the wood’s natural vibrancy and character. Whereas, painted ash subtly reveals the wood grain. Alternatively, a stunning two-piece painted door using moistureresistant Finsa Hidrofugo Plus gives a flawless, contemporary finish. Clear, frosted, reeded, ribbed or mirrored glass can be inserted for a unique and personal twist.
Modern – sleek and uncluttered
Modern kitchen design is known for clean lines, uncluttered surfaces, and seamlessly incorporated appliances.
Flat panel or ‘slab’ doors bring the characteristic streamlined aesthetic. A frameless ‘lay-on’ construction, with concealed German-style hinges, gives a minimalist look.
Features of a modern kitchen:
• Minimalist aesthetics.
• Sleek surfaces with integrated appliances and smooth quartz.
• Handleless cabinets with hidden hardware.
• Natural wood and stone create texture and interest.
Solid acrylic doors with a high gloss or super matt finish create an ultramodern appearance, while natural timber or veneered panels allow the grain and natural features to shine.
For painted doors, we typically use veneered ash for a subtle wood grain detail, or moisture-resistant Finsa Hidrofugo Plus to create a smooth-as-silk finish.

Liveable Luxury
Luxury furniture that doesn’t sacrifice comfort
The idea of liveable luxury is reshaping our interiors, proving that elegance and everyday comfort are no longer at odds. We want it all – the fine materials, the best in design, the expertly crafted details, but we want it with a comfy, practical slant please. Now we need to feel relaxed around it, not like we should lock it away and ‘keep it for best.’
The latest direction? Thoughtfully mixing refined materials – wood and metal, glass and stone, soft upholstery and structured silhouettes –to create rooms that feel oh-so curated yet nestleinto-me inviting.
Where once luxury was defined by high-gloss perfection and matching sets, today’s vision is focused on day-to-day life and what designs are like to actually use after the photos are taken. We want exquisite, elegant, elevated spaces while
keeping them approachable and friendly, for homes that are for living in, not just admiring.
This means furniture with character and practicality – sculptural marble-topped coffee tables with anti-shin-bump rounded edges, plush armchairs with deep seats designed for lingering, and cabinetry that marries natural textures with sleek details. It’s about balancing opulence and a sense of ease.
“It’s about homes that are just as beautiful in real life as they are on screen – but infinitely more enjoyable to live in”
The result? Interiors that feel indulgent without being intimidating, sophisticated yet effortless. It’s about homes that are just as beautiful in real life as they are on screen – but infinitely more enjoyable to live in.

Stand Out From The Crowd
Embrace the elegance of wood with Schmidt’s new Bossa Nova collection in black lacquered oak veneer
French interior expert Schmidt has unveiled the perfect collection that blends the elegance of wood with their new Bossa Nova collection in black lacquered oak veneer. Both trends fit easily into contemporary and classic interiors.
The new Bossa Nova kitchen collection is made for socialising and entertaining with an extra-large island for food prep, cooking, chatting and casual dining. Big enough for all the family as well as friends dropping by for coffee, lunch or dinner, it’s also ideal for home working and homework, taking centre stage in this light, bright and inspirational space that’s full of charm and character.
Ideal for minimalist schemes and décors, Bossa Nova includes a variety of feature units and space-saving storage that make this kitchen design really stand out from the crowd. The glass-fronted display units for instance are right on trend and are more practical than open shelves, as they offer an elegant and ordered way to tidy away crockery, cookware, glasses and more, protecting them from dust and dirt while still allowing quick and easy access when needed.
The units also look stunning after dark, as they can be illuminated from within to make a feature out of the dinnerware, ceramics and accessories inside. Schmidt is also an expert in designing storage to
tailor for every culinary need. The tall larder unit for instance has strong and sturdy pull-outs that easily take the weight of heavy bottles, bags, jars and tins while drawers with wooden interior fittings keep cutlery, knives and utensils organised and within easy reach. Schmidt’s larder comes as an extra deep unit - 62.5cm – giving an exceptional 26% extra storage space over other larder solutions. Bossa Nova offers so many opportunities for customisation and a kitchen designed to suit every need. Glass-fronted units for instance can be added to a recess within a bank of cabinetry to create dresser-style storage while bi-fold doors can be used to conceal a coffee station or breakfast cupboard.
