TIM HASTILOW: GAME FACE T im Hastilow is a Hertfordshire-born artist whose second act has become his defining one. He studied art more than 40 years ago, then stepped away, only returning to drawing around eleven years ago after encouragement from his family. That return quickly turned serious. Tim is best known as a wildlife artist, and specifically as a long-running presence in the **Wildlife Artist of the Year** at the Mall Gallery in London. He is described as a ten-year finalist for the award, a veteran presence who is regularly shortlisted and highly commended. As his confidence grew as he entered the competition and has stayed in that conservationart circuit since. His practice is broader than one subject – his own bio notes work spanning from wildlife to punk rock portraits – but the visual language is consistent: stark black-and-white, dense chaotic cross-hatching, strong shapes and contrasting tones that create a big visual impact. He works primarily in ink. The signature motif is the eye. Recent works shared on his Instagram @timhastilow focus on isolated, almost confrontational close-ups – a raptor head rendered with an unblinking, intense eye and razor-sharp beak, where diagonal orientation and deep black against white create kinetic energy, a surreal bald ibis for #wildlifeartistoftheyear2026, and painted dogs, including his piece Game Face. Tim was invited to exhibit this by Emily Lamb at her exhibition The Art Of Survival, a private vernissage held at Ampney Park. The piece was shown on a small wooden easel, photographed as a meticulously lit framed ink sketch, and presented as work that rewards both distance and close inspection of its intricate

scribbles. The work was acquired with half of proceeds supporting the DSWF conservation fund – a model he repeats across his art-forconservation philanthropy. Locally, Tim is part of the Old Hatfield scene. This year his original black-and-white works have been on temporary display in Fore Street while the shop awaits new tenants, and he has been associated with numerous pictures of Hatfield House where he is a regular visitor. In person he presents quietly – purple paisley shirt, hands in pockets beside his own work – but the drawings do the shouting. Whether it’s a wild dog, a bird of prey, or a punk portrait, Tim’s ink work is about survival and stare: intense, detailed, and built to make you look back.

The Art of Possibility:
Henry Fraser’s Extraordinary Vision
I
n an age captivated by narratives of resilience, few stories resonate with the quiet power and authenticity of Henry Fraser’s. Yet to define Fraser solely through adversity would be to overlook the remarkable achievement at the heart of his work: art that transcends circumstance and speaks directly to the human spirit. Paralysed from the shoulders down following a life-changing diving accident in 2009, Fraser has transformed what many would regard as limitation into an extraordinary creative language. Teaching himself to draw and paint using a brush held in his mouth, he has built a body of work distinguished not by its method, but by its emotional depth, vibrant energy and technical confidence. His paintings are immediately recognisable. Bold wildlife portraits, luminous landscapes and expressive abstracts pulse with colour and movement, revealing an artist fascinated by beauty, optimism and the natural world. There is a striking absence of self-pity in Fraser’s visual vocabulary. Instead, his canvases celebrate possibility. Animals emerge with personality and presence; colours radiate with an almost joyful intensity. Each piece feels less like a statement about disability and more like an affirmation of life itself. What makes Fraser particularly compelling within today’s cultural landscape is his refusal to be confined by labels. Artist, author, speaker and

advocate, he inhabits each role with the same clarity of purpose. His bestselling books explore themes of acceptance, perspective and personal growth, while his public speaking engagements have inspired audiences worldwide. Yet art remains the purest expression of his philosophy: that creativity can flourish even in the most unexpected circumstances. There is also a refreshing honesty to Fraser’s work. The slight imperfections that naturally accompany mouth painting are not concealed but embraced, lending each piece a sense of humanity and authenticity. In a world increasingly polished by algorithms and digital perfection, that sincerity feels profoundly contemporary. Henry Fraser’s greatest achievement is not that he paints with his mouth. It is that he has created a distinctive artistic voice that compels us to look beyond limitation and toward possibility. His work reminds us that creativity is not determined by physical capability, but by imagination, courage and an unwavering commitment to seeing beauty where others might not. henryfraserart.com

Hertfordshire Husband-and-Wife Team Named SME National Business Awards Finalists
hat started as an idea between husband and wife has become one of Hertfordshire’s leading creative studios and now Hertford Studios is being recognised on a national stage. Hertford-based Robert and Charmaine Mills, founders of Hertford Studios, have been named finalists in the Best New Business category at the SME National Business Awards 2026. The 3,000 sq ft creative studio was created with a simple ambition: to give Hertfordshire businesses, brands, photographers and content creators access to a professional, high-end production space without always having to make the journey into London. Since opening its doors, Hertford Studios has grown into a creative hub for photography, video production, social content, podcasts and studio hire, welcoming everyone from established brands and agencies to local businesses and independent creators. For Charmaine and Rob, reaching the national finals is particularly meaningful because of the people who have helped them build the business along the way. “We genuinely couldn’t have got this far without the support of so many people,” says Charmaine. “That includes the clients who have booked the studio, people who have recommended us, creatives and businesses who have collaborated with us, and those who have simply encouraged us along the way. 24 AUGUST 2026
“Since opening its doors, Hertford Studios has grown into a creative hub for photography, video production, social content, podcasts and studio hire”
“And, of course, there are the people who have helped us clean, paint walls, move furniture and generally get stuck in when something needed doing! Building a business is definitely a team effort.” The couple are particularly proud that their studio is helping demonstrate what is possible within Hertfordshire’s creative community, offering a professional alternative to travelling into London while bringing businesses and creatives together locally. The winners will be announced at the SME National Business Awards ceremony at Leonardo Royal London Tower Bridge on Friday 6 November 2026. Whatever happens on the night, reaching the finals is already a milestone the couple are proud to celebrate. And with plenty more plans for Hertford Studios still in the pipeline, this husband-and-wife team are certainly not finished yet. hertfordstudios.co.uk

attlers Green Farm’s original eatery, The Bull Pen has undergone a contemporary update to its menu, interiors and branding. It reopened from Thursday 16th July 2026. Starting out as a small tearoom back in 1993, built in the original pen for the farm’s bull, The Bull Pen soon became a popular destination for locals and visitors to the area. Regularly at capacity, The Bull Pen extended in 2018, increasing covers from 40 to over 120. These changes mark the beginning of the next chapter in this local favourite’s ongoing evolution. Regulars will notice that best-selling dishes remain on the menu, with a reimagined and elevated flair to them. Dishes like the signature Welsh Rarebit, Full English and Jacket Potatoes. “…But it is also time for something new” Paul Haworth, Managing Director of The Bull Pen explains. “We looked at sales figures and customer feedback and have made decisions to our menu offering from there, coupled with the instinctive, modern direction we want to move in. It’s a real pleasure to be able to design a menu that speaks to both the location and story of the farm. The life of a timepiece
F
ew possessions accompany us through the years quite like a fine watch. Choosing a fine timepiece often marks the first step of a new chapter; a graduation, a new career or coming of age. A well-chosen watch can accompany you through life’s greatest milestones, quietly witnessing the moments that shape who we become. Over time, a watch evolves far beyond something simply worn on the wrist. It becomes part of your story. A fine timepiece is designed to last more than a lifetime. Its mechanical precision quietly tracks the passing of time, carrying memories, meaning and history from one generation to the next. While it may start as a purchase, its significance grows far beyond its practical purpose. At Baker Brothers, we’ve spent more than 180 years helping people choose their timepiece. As an independent family jeweller, we understand that choosing a watch is rarely just a transaction. It’s the unfolding of a relationship that may last for decades. Our experienced team takes the time to explain the inner workings, design and intricate details behind every piece, helping you find the watch that feels right for you. Selecting a watch, however, is only the beginning of ownership. A well-loved watch sees the world. It experiences every adventure alongside you. That’s part of its beauty, but it also brings the natural effects of time. Regular servicing preserves the precision, reliability and integrity of the mechanical movement, ensuring your watch continues to perform as beautifully as the day you first wore it. Through expert watch servicing, our Master Watchmaker and workshop team are here to support you at every stage of ownership.

Just as we change, so too do our collections. Some pieces become constant companions, while others make way for the next chapter. Whether you’re choosing your first luxury watch, caring for a treasured timepiece or thoughtfully evolving your collection, Baker Brothers is here to share in your story with expert guidance, personal service and a lasting commitment to craftsmanship, care and connection. Because the finest watches don’t simply tell the time, they become woven into the moments that matter most.

THE COUNTRYSIDE TAKES CENTRE STAGE: The Hatfield Rural Show returns to Hatfield Park this September
EVENT DETAILS
A
two-day celebration of tractors, working dogs and traditional country skills is heading back to Hatfield Park, as George’s Field prepares to host the Hatfield Rural Show this September. Returning on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th September, the Hatfield Rural Show is back for its second year with two days of vintage machinery, working animals and countryside fun. Running from 10am to 5pm, the show builds on the momentum of last year’s hugely popular debut, with an even bigger programme planned for visitors this time around. Designed as much as a chance to learn something new as a day out for the whole family, the show brings together rural traditions, skilled craftspeople and entertainment for all ages within the picturesque setting of Hatfield Park. The programme’s centrepiece is a spectacular arena display of vintage tractors, brought to life with live commentary from Heart Radio’s John Darin and The Rustic Rambler, who will share the history and most fascinating features of these beautifully restored machines. Elsewhere at the show, visitors can watch a live working steam sawmill in action, admire a collection of classic cars and vintage lorries, and be amazed by the skill and precision of working gun dogs in full display. The Sheep Show brings nine different breeds to the stage — complete with live shearing and, by all accounts, a spot of sheep dancing — while a rare Suffolk Punch talk offers a close-up introduction to one of the countryside’s most beautiful and critically endangered breeds. Younger visitors are especially well catered for. As well as a classic funfair with a Ferris wheel, merry-go-round and swinging boats, children can test their strength in a tug of war, take the wheel in the Pedal Tractor Area or the Mini Rovers off-road 44 AUGUST 2026
course, and get creative at the hands-on nature workshops, making bird feeders and bug hotels. Dog owners can enter the Bark in the Park show, with categories from Best in Show to Waggiest Tail — entry is £2 per class, with all proceeds going to Countryside Learning. Across the weekend there’s also a full calendar of talks and demonstrations covering farming, beekeeping, gardening and rural crafts, alongside stalls selling ceramics, candles, preserves and jewellery from local makers. Food and drink will come courtesy of Ragmarsh Farm and Sausage Co., with a selection of on-site bars keeping visitors refreshed throughout the day. The show’s return marks another entry in a growing calendar of activity across Hatfield Park this year, from the Old Hatfield Farmers Market in Salisbury Square to Food Truck Fridays on Palace Green — part of a broader ambition to give visitors more reasons to visit Hatfield Park, whatever the season. Tickets include full admission to Hatfield Park and Gardens, and visitors are encouraged to book ahead.

atmosphere that makes people feel looked after rather than overawed. It is the sort of place that suits a long overdue catch-up as much as an evening booked with purpose, which is perhaps why it is beginning to feel like one of Berkhamsted’s most enjoyable discoveries. Part of the pleasure of visiting Artemis is discovering its setting. The restaurant is part of The Denton, Elysian Residences’ beautifully designed Berkhamsted residence, where elegant interiors and landscaped gardens create a backdrop that feels luxurious without being showy. While The Denton has been created for home owners over 65, it is also becoming increasingly connected with the wider town, opening its doors through its restaurant and welcoming shared spaces. Berkhamsted is at its most charming in summer. The high street has long been loved for its independent businesses, while the nearby Chilterns offer an easy escape for those looking to make the most of a warm day. The Denton sits comfortably within that way of life, offering somewhere to meet friends, enjoy good food or spend time in beautiful surroundings close to the heart of the town. The summer calendar adds another reason to visit, with a programme of events planned to bring the wider community into The Denton throughout the season. Locals can keep an eye out for upcoming music nights, barbecues, wellness events and theatre productions, each designed to make the most of the elegant spaces and create relaxed opportunities to enjoy the atmosphere. There is also a gentle focus on wellbeing woven through The Denton, with space for private gatherings and activities such as yoga or Pilates. Its calm interiors lend themselves naturally to smaller events and local groups, while the restaurant makes it an attractive choice for breakfast meetings or celebrations that deserve somewhere more elegant than the usual local venue. This summer, Artemis may be the first reason to visit, but The Denton offers plenty more to discover once you arrive. With its growing connection to the local community, it brings a stylish new dimension to Berkhamsted life, offering a place that feels aspirational while still being genuinely welcoming. 01442 946032 thedentonberkhamstead.com 54 AUGUST 2026

WHO GETS AHEAD?
cross many of Britain’s leading professions, people educated in the private sector continue to be overrepresented in senior and decisionmaking roles. Recent research and ongoing public debate suggest that, despite progress in widening participation, educational background remains a powerful factor in shaping career trajectories across public life, business and the professions. This pattern is particularly visible in areas such as politics, the judiciary and the armed forces, where senior leadership roles are more commonly held by those who attended independent schools. Similar trends can be seen in medicine, the civil service and the media, where private and selective educational pathways continue to feature prominently among those at the top. In the corporate sector, many leaders of major British companies progressed through fee-paying schools and highly selective universities. The creative industries also reflect this imbalance, with a significant number of successful actors and performers having come through independent education, prompting wider discussion about access, representation and opportunity. Supporters of independent education argue that its influence extends beyond academic results. Greater emphasis on confidence, communication, leadership and extracurricular engagement can 62 AUGUST 2026

play an important role in preparing young people for competitive environments. Strong networks and exposure to wider opportunities are also often cited as contributing factors. At the same time, educators and policymakers continue to question how these advantages can be more evenly distributed. Improving access to high-quality teaching, enrichment activities and personal development opportunities across all school types remains a central challenge for the education system. As conversations around social mobility and fairness continue, education remains at the heart of the debate. Understanding how different educational experiences shape outcomes is essential to creating a system that allows talent to flourish, regardless of background – and ensures that leadership across British society reflects the full breadth of ability within it.

BENEFITS OF THE INDEPENDENT SCHOOL
W
ith options ranging from traditional boarding schools to modern alternative curricula, there is almost certainly a private school to suit every child. Parents choose private education for many reasons, from academic enrichment to community values, and for many families it represents a worthwhile long-term investment in their child’s development.
ENRICHED ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITIES One of the most widely recognized benefits of private schools is their ability to offer challenging and enriching educational experiences. Many provide advanced coursework, internationally recognized programs, and diverse extracurricular 66 AUGUST 2026
learning opportunities. These programs are often designed not only to strengthen academic performance but also to encourage critical thinking, creativity, and personal growth. Graduates of private schools are frequently well prepared for higher education due to the rigor and breadth of their studies.
CONTROLLED CLASS SIZES Private schools are known for placing a strong emphasis on smaller class sizes. Fewer students per classroom allows teachers to give more individualised attention, helping students strengthen weaker areas while further developing their strengths. This personalized approach supports deeper understanding, increased engagement, and a more responsive learning environment.

DEDICATED TEACHERS Teachers in private schools are often highly qualified and deeply invested in their subjects. Many bring advanced training or specialized expertise to the classroom, along with a strong commitment to their students’ success. In closeknit school communities, teachers are more accessible and often serve as mentors and role models. Smaller class sizes also allow educators to provide extra support or extend learning opportunities when needed.
PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT Open communication between parents and school staff is a cornerstone of private education. Schools often encourage parents to take an active role through regular meetings, community events, volunteer opportunities, and parent-led initiatives. This level of involvement helps families feel connected to the school community and supports stronger collaboration in a child’s education, which can positively influence parent–child relationships as well.
A SAFE ENVIRONMENT Private schools typically maintain clear expectations for behavior, respect, and accountability. Lower staff-to-student ratios make it easier to supervise students and address issues proactively. A strong sense of community can also discourage negative behaviors and promote mutual respect, contributing to a learning environment where students feel secure and supported.
AMPLE RESOURCES Many private schools invest heavily in resources that support learning across a wide range of disciplines. From well-equipped classrooms and libraries to sports facilities, art studios, and technology, these resources allow students to explore their interests and develop their talents more fully.
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES While academics are central, private schools often emphasize the importance of a well-rounded education. Students are encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities such as sports, music, visual arts, drama, or clubs. skills, while also providing balance and relief from academic pressures.
PREPARATION FOR TODAY’S AND TOMORROW’S WORLD Private schools often go beyond standard curriculum requirements by offering specialized programs in areas such as the arts, athletics, mathematics, and science. Their flexibility allows them to adapt to cultural, technological, and educational changes, preparing students for a wide range of future paths. Many families also seek out private education for children with specific learning needs, valuing the tailored support and individualized approaches these schools can provide.

flattering trends of the year. Texture is equally important. Cream and satinfinish shadows create a velvety appearance that catches light gently without looking metallic or glittery. Powder formulas remain popular, but are finely milled and blended to produce a cloud-like finish rather than obvious layers of colour. The overall effect is polished yet almost imperceptible. Definition comes through subtle contrast rather than harsh lines. Instead of bold black eyeliner, soft brown or charcoal pencils are gently smudged into the lash line, adding depth while maintaining the blurred aesthetic. Mascara remains lightweight, with separated lashes replacing thick, dramatic volume. Brows are brushed upwards and kept natural, framing the eyes without overpowering them. Cashmere Eyes also embrace versatility. During the day, a single wash of taupe or soft brown creates effortless definition, while evening looks can be deepened by layering richer cocoa or espresso tones through the outer corners.
Because the colours are muted rather than highly pigmented, they build beautifully without appearing heavy, making the trend easy to adapt for different occasions. The rest of the face remains intentionally understated. Fresh skin, softly sculpted cheeks and neutral lips allow the gentle eye makeup to remain the focal point without competing for attention. Rather than relying on contrast, the entire look feels harmonious, with every element working together to create quiet sophistication. Ultimately, Cashmere Eyes capture the mood of modern beauty: less about making a statement and more about creating lasting elegance. They prove that soft textures, thoughtful colour and expert blending can feel just as impactful as bold artistry. In a season where restraint has become the ultimate luxury, the most fashionable eye makeup is also the easiest to wear.

ST ALBANS’ FIRST OPEN POOL FLOATATION CENTRE b eing, the floatation, infrared sauna and massage centre on Bricket Road, St Albans opened in July. Most customers book two treatments in a single visit, pairing a float with an infrared sauna or a massage. Floatation involves lying in a private room on water carrying over 500kg of dissolved Epsom salts, which makes the body completely buoyant. Unlike the enclosed pods most people picture, being uses an open pool in a private room, with lighting the guest controls themselves. Each session runs 60 minutes, and the water is kept at skin temperature, so after a few minutes most people stop noticing the boundary between body and water. It sounds unusual, but there is research that shows the benefits of this type of wellness therapy. Floating has been studied for its effect on stress and sleep, and people living with chronic back pain, tension headaches or anxiety have used it alongside other treatments for years. St Albans, until now, has had nowhere local to try it. Will Wood, centre manager at being, said: “We have been overwhelmed by the warmth and support shown by the St Albans community since opening Being Wellness Centre at the start of July. It has been a real privilege for the team to welcome people through our doors and offer them a calm space to pause, reset and experience the benefits of floatation, infrared sauna and massage

A Healthier Home:
Interior design for better well-being
T
he human mind is an incredibly powerful, insightful and opulent component within our biological composition. Often neglected, its nurturing takes a back seat to the everyday distractions which misleadingly seem more important. Our mental state is a crucial factor in the mechanism of our movements, actions and the way in which we approach life’s obstacles. There are many ways in which our mental agility can be altered to determine conflicting outcomes of neutral situations. When our mind’s equilibrium is affected, so are our actions. It’s therefore within our best interest to invest the time into protecting and stimulating our brains at all times to ensure that they are healthy and elevated, regardless of the negativity that may surround us. Many factors contribute to our health, happiness and emotional well-being. From the types of food we consume, the amount of exercise we practice, to the types of people we choose to surround ourselves with. All of which contribute to our own personal journey of contentment. However, one of the fundamental and often
88 AUGUST 2026
underestimated factors is the environment we choose to situate ourselves in. Scientifically proven, our living space can influence our emotional state of mind in both a negative and positive manner. Interior design can have the power to systematically improve our moods through clever use of colours, fabrics and furniture feng shui. Tranquil shades, stimulating surface textures and resourceful organisational units can all contribute to the make-up of a healthier habitat, resulting in a happier and more positive you. Colour Co-Ordinated: When it comes to colour,
“Scientifically proven, our living space can influence our emotional state of mind in both a negative and positive manner”
choosing the correct kind is essential to achieving a positive ambience within a home. Colours visually stimulate us, causing brain cells to react and triggering a torrent of unleashed emotions. Not only do different colours impact our feelings, but the amount of exposure we have to certain shades can also affect the chemical imbalance within our brains. Incorporating colour into a living space should be done with precision and attention to detail. Avoid overindulgence of certain shades and misuse of garish tones, as they can hinder the potential of a prosperous space. Tranquillity can be achieved through clever use of soft serene shades. Incorporating pastel tones such as blues, greens and lilacs into a contemporary living space can result in a calmer and more relaxed environment. This clever colour scheme can be transitioned throughout the home, although it is particularly recommended within areas intended for recreational rest. Organised Interiors: In life, organisation gives us the ability to take control of situations in order to attain positive experiences. It can give us a clear direction and thought process of obstacles ahead, making life a more pleasurable journey. When it comes to our living space, organising physical objects can lead to clearer paths both in reality and within our minds. Structuring a household by decluttering and strategically tidying can help with stress reduction, productivity and emotional elevation. Stylish contemporary sideboards, offer an elegant way to keep living spaces organised and clutter-free. Visually striking on the outside and highly practical within, they provide valuable storage while contributing to a calmer, more
considered home. Let There Be Light: Another contributing factor that has a negative impact on our emotional state of mind is a lack of light. Dark and dingy spaces can psychologically affect our mood, causing it to go into a spiral and effectively weaken. Modern lighting can play a vital role when it comes to elevating interior ambience. Incorporating an array of lighting solutions within your home can effectively improve moods while visually enhancing interiors. Let magical designs guide you out of the darkness and into a more uplifting setting. As visually striking as it is functional, its reflective structure and multitude of light sources cast a warm, radiant glow, instantly brightening any living space. A Breath Of Fresh Air: While we’re exploring how improving things externally can help internally, let’s look beyond the four walls of our abodes. To truly turn a house into a home every inch must feel as if it were purpose-built... this includes the garden. Outdoor spaces are a place to breathe and enjoy nature’s natural calming properties, setting your exterior up to accommodate as much time spent in it as possible, while doing things usually reserved for inside is a bona fide way of improving your experience. chaplins.co.uk AUGUST 2026 89

NEW MEDITERRANEANINSPIRED TILE COLLECTION New tile launch from Porcelain Superstore channels sun-baked interiors
A
new tile collection from independent retailer Porcelain Superstore is bringing the charm of the Mediterranean to British homes. Capturing the gentle warmth of sun-baked clay, Parador Cotto brings a relaxed natural character to any space. Its large format size offers a contemporary look that works beautifully across both floors and walls, creating a calm, uninterrupted surface in living rooms and kitchens, while in bathrooms it brings comfort without feeling heavy. Abbas Youssefi, Managing Director of Porcelain Superstore, said: “Tiles have a huge influence on the way a room feels, and the new Parador Cotto collection has been designed to bring instant warmth, softness and character into the home. “The terracotta tones tap into that timeless Mediterranean look people love, but in a way that feels refined and easy to live with. It has the relaxed feel of a villa floor or a rustic coastal retreat, but with a cleaner, more contemporary finish that works beautifully in modern homes.” 90 AUGUST 2026
Finished in an earthy terracotta shade, each tile has soft variation to give that authentic Mediterranean character. But because it’s made from durable porcelain, it’s perfect for busy modern homes and requires little upkeep. Abbas added: “Warm, earthy tiles are brilliant for adding soul to a space and what makes this collection so appealing is that it delivers the charm of traditional terracotta without the maintenance.” While the tile was designed for indoor walls and floors, for those who want to carry the look into their outside space, Parador Cotto can also be used on exterior walls. Parador Cotto Tile Parador captures the gentle warmth of sun-baked clay, reinterpreted in a refined porcelain finish. Its soft terracotta tones bring a relaxed, natural character to a room, drawing inspiration from the calm simplicity of Japandi interiors and the easy elegance of Mediterranean homes. Understanding Your Home:
Why Damp, Heat Loss and External Ground Levels Should Be Considered Together
A
beautiful home is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a living structure that constantly responds to its surroundings, from changing seasons and weather conditions to the way it is heated, ventilated and used every day. When issues such as damp, cold rooms, excessive heat or deterioration begin to appear, the visible signs are often only part of a much bigger picture. Identifying the true cause behind these problems is essential to finding the right solution and ensuring

improvements deliver long term benefits. Eco Tiffin is a local, family run surveying and building company dedicated to helping property owners better understand the condition and performance of their buildings. Carrying out surveys and improvement projects throughout the local area, the team works across a wide range of properties including private homes, listed and period buildings, schools and other structures where careful assessment and specialist knowledge are essential. The company takes a whole building approach, recognising that the different elements of a property are closely connected. Damp, ventilation, insulation, external ground levels and the way a building is heated and occupied can all influence one another. A property that feels cold may not simply require additional heating, while signs of damp may not always be solved by treating the surface appearance alone. Understanding what is happening beneath the surface is the first step
towards making informed decisions. For example, high external ground levels can contribute to damp bridging, where moisture from surrounding areas affects the base of external walls. Poor ventilation can increase condensation, while inadequate insulation, cold bridging and draughts can lead to heat loss and increased energy consumption. These issues can impact not only the comfort of a home but also its long term condition and efficiency. Using professional thermal imaging equipment, Eco Tiffin can identify areas of heat loss, cold bridging, missing or defective insulation, draughts and potential moisture related concerns. This technology allows the team to gain a clearer understanding of how a building is performing and where improvements may be most beneficial. Thermal imaging is also increasingly valuable during warmer weather, helping to identify areas of excessive heat gain. As homes experience higher temperatures during summer months, understanding where unwanted heat enters a building can help improve comfort and reduce reliance on air conditioning and other cooling systems. By identifying where a property is losing or gaining heat, Eco Tiffin can recommend suitable improvements designed to reduce energy demand throughout the year. This considered approach is particularly important when working with older properties. Period and listed buildings often have unique construction methods and materials, meaning solutions must balance modern performance improvements with the need to preserve character and architectural integrity. One of Eco Tiffin’s innovative solutions is AirDrain, a patented system designed for properties affected by high external ground levels, damp bridging and restricted evaporation at the base of external walls. The system creates a ventilated space alongside the building, helping protect the wall from ground level moisture and rain splashback while allowing the base of the wall to breathe and dry naturally. For some properties, lowering surrounding ground levels, patios, paths or driveways may be disruptive, impractical or potentially damaging to the character of the building. AirDrain can provide an alternative approach and can be used on modern, period and listed properties, including buildings that do not have a conventional damp
“Eco Tiffin can recommend suitable improvements designed to reduce energy demand throughout the year”
proof course. Eco Tiffin’s expertise and innovative work have received industry recognition, with the company nominated for the Property Care Association’s Project of the Year Award for a project involving damp, energy efficiency and AirDrain improvements. AirDrain has also received a separate nomination for the Property Care Association’s Innovation and Sustainability Award. Alongside specialist building improvement projects, Eco Tiffin provides a comprehensive range of surveying and advisory services including damp, timber and building defect surveys, thermal heat loss and heat gain surveys, pre purchase damp and defect surveys, AirDrain surveys, ventilation and condensation assessments, together with advice and support with property insurance claims. Whether you are purchasing a property, improving an existing home or investigating concerns such as damp or energy efficiency, professional advice can help prevent costly mistakes and ensure solutions are appropriate for the building. By looking at a property as a complete system rather than focusing only on individual symptoms, Eco Tiffin helps homeowners make informed decisions that protect their investment, improve comfort and enhance energy performance. With certain qualifying installations of energy saving materials currently benefiting from 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, there is also an opportunity for homeowners to consider improvements that can create a more comfortable, efficient and resilient property for the future. ecotiffin.co.uk

Introducing Casa Paraíso Step into a world of sun-drenched escapism with Casa Paraíso. Lush, abstract tropics intertwine with rich fresco textures. Inspired by vibrant, faraway escapes, this collection captures the essence of warmth, colour, and effortless luxury. Each hand-painted mural offers a contemporary interpretation of globally inspired interiors, blending bold brushstrokes with tactile depth and thoughtfully crafted colour palettes. The result is a space that feels immersive, expressive, and irresistibly uplifting. Bursting with tropical and botanical influences, Casa Paraíso moves beyond the expected. Its abstract forms and organic shapes layer seamlessly, creating a sense of movement and harmony that elevates any interior into a refined sanctuary of creative escapism. “We envisioned a collection that feels energising yet understated, evoking escapism without being literal. By deconstructing and reassembling textured forms, we’ve created flowing compositions that invite light, warmth, and the feeling of sun-soaked air into your space.” Designed by our creatives Jess Lee and Alicia Everett. The full collection features over 25 murals, launching on 2nd July at Hovia. hovia.com

BOLD SHAPES, BRIGHT COLOURS and the return of expressive
G
eometric motifs are taking on a new role in interiors, as we see a growing desire for more expressive, optimistic spaces. Bold shapes and vibrant colours are being used to create impact, energy, and a renewed sense of personality at home. Across both private homes and professional spaces, there is a clear movement towards more immersive and character-driven interiors. Geometric designs, once seen as purely structured and graphic, are now being reinterpreted through a more playful and artistic lens, where colour, scale, and composition take center stage. “We’re seeing a growing interest in interiors that feel more expressive and uplifting. Geometric patterns bring both structure and creativity, making it easy to transform a space and create a completely new mood,” says Joanna Swanson, Chief Brand Officer at Photowall. At a time when many are looking for optimism and inspiration in their everyday surroundings, bold geometric motifs offer a powerful way to refresh a space. Whether used in a living room, workspace, or creative environment, these designs introduce movement, rhythm, and visual interest. Rather than replacing more neutral interiors, this trend works alongside them. Geometric designs can act as a focal point, adding contrast and personality while still maintaining a balanced overall look. photowall.com

easy to live with, where each element has been carefully considered without feeling overdesigned.”
The Firova Range - Textured, practical and easy for everyday use The brand new Firova vanity is designed for modern living, offering a bathroom that feels calm, considered and genuinely easy to use. At the heart of the collection is its distinctive fluted woodgrain detailing, embracing the rising trend for textured surfaces in modern bathrooms. The vertical pattern adds subtle depth and quiet rhythm, creating visual interest that feels purposeful rather than purely decorative. This detail elevates the vanity without overwhelming the space, making Firova equally suited to minimalist interiors or warmer, layered schemes. Available in Tortona Oak and Persian Walnut,
the finishes introduce natural warmth, helping a bathroom feel inviting while remaining firmly in line with flutings growing popularity. Firova’s wall-hung design is central to its modern appeal. Raised from the floor, it frees up space, making cleaning easier and creating a more open feel ideal for smaller bathrooms. Storage is intelligently arranged for everyday use, with soft-close drawers, precision-engineered hardware and premium materials ensuring smooth, quiet operation and lasting performance. Designed to integrate seamlessly within a coordinated bathroom, Firova pairs effortlessly with contemporary basins, mirrors and worktops, creating spaces that are functional, considered and inviting. New colours & textured finishes for popular ranges Building on its existing popular collections, Calypso has updated key furniture and finish options to support a more unified and cohesive bathroom design. Woodgrains remain central to creating spaces that feel grounded and livedin: Sienna Oak, a warm, mid-tone woodgrain, now features across the Brecon fitted furniture collection, while a lighter Nordic Oak has been added to Aurelia and Brenta vanities. New finishes have been extended across the collections, introducing subtle tones to the muchloved Chiltern and Chelworth ranges. Chiltern now features contour soft green, a light, muted tone, and contour porcelain, a warm, understated white. These finishes add depth while maintaining the calm, framed presence the collection is known for. Chelworth is joined by contour blue sage, a gentle grey green that brings softness, character, and balance to the collection.
contrast within lighter schemes or enhancing more dramatic interiors. Accessories to complete the space Calypso’s collection of mirrors, worktops and complementary accessories has been thoughtfully expanded, introducing new designs alongside refined additions to existing ranges. The Vittoria mirror brings a softly illuminated, arched form to the collection, defined by gentle curves and a quietly refined presence. Alongside this, the Farnese mirrored cabinet is now available in an additional 600mm size, offering greater flexibility when planning different layouts. Retaining its familiar proportions and balanced design, this new size allows Farnese to integrate more seamlessly across a broader range of furniture widths, supporting a consistent and considered look throughout the bathroom. The introduction of the Breccia Light Marble worktop brings a soft, stone-inspired surface to the range, with a clean, square-edged profile and subtle patterning that suits both contemporary and classic interiors. Additionally, a selection of basins has also been developed for use with wall-mounted taps, creating a more streamlined and simplified basin area. Designed without a tap hole, these options maintain balanced proportions and refined finishes, helping to create bathrooms that feel coordinated, functional and thoughtfully resolved. calypsobathrooms.co.uk

Coordinated brassware finishes Calypso has also expanded its brassware offering, with finishes designed to coordinate seamlessly across selected taps, handles and fittings. Reflecting a focus on thoughtful detail, these additions help bring consistency across key touchpoints, creating a more refined and cohesive bathroom scheme. Two new finishes, Brushed Bronze and Gunmetal, have been introduced, adding depth and versatility to the collection. Brushed Bronze offers a warmer, softer alternative to traditional metallics, bringing a sense of richness and understated elegance, while Gunmetal introduces a deeper, more contemporary tone, ideal for creating AUGUST 2026 103

The Builder Behind the Homes By Neil Groom, Director, NJG Building Solutions, Federation of Master Builders
F
or most people, a home is far more than bricks, timber and roof tiles. It is where birthdays are celebrated, children take their first steps, families gather around the kitchen table, and memories quietly accumulate over decades. That is why building work should never begin with concrete. It should begin with conversation. For more than twenty-five years I have been fortunate enough to help families across Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire and the surrounding counties transform the way they live. During that time I have built everything from structural
108 AUGUST 2026
alterations and contemporary kitchen extensions to complete home renovations. Yet one thing has remained remarkably consistent. People rarely begin by asking, “How much will it cost?” Instead they ask questions like: “Will this work for our family?” “Can we trust the people doing the work?” “Are we making the right decision?” Those questions deserve honest answers. Too often the construction industry focuses on selling square metres instead of understanding lifestyles. Every property is different. Every family has different routines, ambitions and budgets. A successful extension is never simply about making a house larger. It is about making life easier. Sometimes that means creating one beautiful open-plan living space where parents can cook while children complete homework nearby. Sometimes it means introducing more natural light, improving accessibility, or finally creating the entertaining space that has existed only as an idea for years. Good design changes how a home feels.
“I have been fortunate enough to help families across Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire and the surrounding counties transform the way they live”
One of the most rewarding parts of my role happens long before construction begins. I enjoy walking around a property with clients, asking questions that many builders never ask. How do you use your home today? What frustrates you? Where does everyone naturally gather? How do you imagine living here five or ten years from now? These conversations often reveal solutions that were never considered when the first sketches were drawn. My background is not simply building houses. It has evolved into understanding how homes work. Structural engineering coordination, construction sequencing, temporary works, drainage, planning, estimating and three-dimensional visualisation all play their part in ensuring a project is not only attractive but genuinely buildable. Technology has transformed the way we work. Using modern CAD modelling and estimating software, clients can often see their proposed extension before a single foundation is excavated. They gain clarity, confidence and the opportunity to refine ideas before significant costs are committed. That preparation saves time, reduces risk and avoids expensive surprises. People often assume that the most important decision is choosing the kitchen or selecting the bifold doors. In reality, the most important decision is choosing the team. Quality construction is rarely the result of one talented individual. It comes from architects, structural engineers, building control officers, skilled tradespeople and suppliers all working together with one shared objective. My role is bringing those specialists together into one coordinated process. As Director of NJG Building Solutions, I believe transparency matters just as much as craftsmanship. Clients deserve realistic budgets, straightforward communication and honest advice—even if that advice occasionally means recommending a different approach that saves them money. Trust is earned through consistency rather than promises. Every project begins with exactly the same question.
“What is the best solution for this family?” If we answer that correctly, everything else naturally follows. Over the coming months I will be taking readers behind the scenes of residential construction. We’ll explore planning permission, realistic budgets, design decisions, structural engineering, common mistakes, and the lessons I’ve learned from hundreds of projects throughout Hertfordshire. Whether you’re planning an extension next year or simply curious about how exceptional homes come together, I hope these articles provide practical insight and perhaps a different way of looking at the place you already call home. Because the best building projects are never really about constructing walls. They’re about creating a better way to live. njgbuildingsolutions@gmail.com njgbuildingsolutions.co.uk 07515 828916

MAKING A GREAT FIRST IMPRESSION C
hoosing door furniture for your Entrance Door can be quite daunting, particularly as it creates that all important, great first impression. A good starting place is to consider the size and design of your door and the space available to position the hardware. Then it is all about balance, proportion and of course functionality. “Helping people to furnish their front door is something I really enjoy. Working with the owner to create a look that marries the fabric of the property with their personality and style is really key and delivers beautiful results” Jayne says. Richard continues “The finish is also a key consideration, not just for how it looks aesthetically, but also for longevity. If your property is near the coast then choosing a finish that will stand up to the harsher environment is critical to the door furniture looking good years

CRAFTED IN CLAY: Four new Indigenous terracotta basin designs
N
ew for summer, four handcrafted designs join Indigenous’ Terracotta Basin Collection, combining sculptural forms with the warmth and character of terracotta. Individually crafted by hand, each basin has subtle variations in texture and finish that reflect its artisanal origins. Designed to sit on a countertop, the new basins are available in a bright white glaze and a soft, cream-toned glaze. Finished in a crisp white glaze, the shallow, oval Voramar has gently sloping sides, while the circular Roda flares softly towards a broad rim. Delicate undulations across the surface of each basin catch the light, enhancing the natural rustic character of the clay. In a cream-toned glaze, Arenal and Caleta bring a softer feel. Arenal combines a rounded base with clean, straight sides that rise to a generous rim, while Caleta’s tall-sided circular profile makes it ideal for smaller spaces.

The new basins join the existing Ahuir terracotta basin – a simple circular design with a rustic surface and cream glaze – completing a collection of handcrafted basins that bring timeless simplicity to contemporary bathrooms. “The new basins each have a quiet simplicity, and tactile appeal. They work beautifully when sited on a rustic wood countertop and pair with any tile design, from delicate shell mosaics to patterned, glazed tiles,” commented Indigenous’ Clare Thomas. CARA RANGE ARTISAN C TABLEWARE RANGE Casa by JJ is proud to unveil
“Each piece is designed in our Chelsea London design studio and based on Heritage patterns and designs”
114 AUGUST 2026
asa by JJ has added the Shell Cara collection to its artisan tableware edit – a range of hand-painted ceramics produced by skilled potters in Portugal. Each piece in the collection is decorated by hand, which means no two are identical. The shell motif runs across the range in soft, coastal tones: plates, bowls, and serving pieces that work individually or layered together at table. Founder Josephine Jenno has long sourced from artisan workshops across Europe and beyond, and the Portuguese ceramics tradition – one of the oldest on the continent – sits at the heart of this collection. The hand-painted finish gives each piece a quality that machine production simply can’t replicate. Each piece is designed in our Chelsea London design studio and based on Heritage patterns and designs. “There’s something about Portuguese handpainted ceramics that has always felt genuinely alive,” says Josephine Jenno. “Cara Shell range captures that energy. It’s a collection you’ll reach for again and again.” Shell Cara is available now at casabyjj.com.
