The Evolution of a Collection
W
ith each passing year, our tastes naturally change. Our lives move through different chapters, shaped by new experiences, ambitions and perspectives. Our tastes become more considered, our priorities shift and the things we value evolve alongside us. It is only natural, then, that our watch collections should do the same. A collection rarely begins with a grand plan. It might start with a first luxury timepiece to mark a milestone, followed years later by a watch discovered for a particular occasion, a change in taste or simply because its craftsmanship speaks to you. Over time, these individual pieces begin to form something more personal: a collection that reflects where you have been, where you are and, perhaps, where you are going. At Baker Brothers, we believe the most interesting collections are those that grow over time. As your interests develop, so too can the watches you choose. A preference for classic designs might give way to an appreciation for innovation. A versatile everyday watch may be joined by something more distinctive. But evolution is not always about finding something new. Sometimes, it is about looking differently at what you already own. Refining what
18 SEPTEMBER 2026
you own allows your collection to change naturally with you, whether preserving the pieces that still resonate, part exchanging a watch that no longer feels right, or making room for something new. For more than 180 years, Baker Brothers has helped clients choose, care for and develop their watch collections. Our specialists take the time to understand not only the watches themselves, but the person, preferences and purpose behind them. That relationship continues throughout ownership. Whether discovering your next watch, caring for a treasured timepiece through our workshop or gaining a clearer understanding of what you own through professional valuations, our team offers honest advice, technical expertise and personal care. Because evolving a collection is not about constantly adding to it. It is about creating something considered and meaningful, preserving the watches that hold significance while making space for those that reflect who you are today. Your collection, considered. From professional valuations and part exchange to finding your next watch, our specialists can help you consider what comes next. Visit us in the boutique to discover more. New Head Chef, New Menu, Refreshed Interiors. The Bull Pen, Battlers Green Farm
B
attlers Green Farm’s original eatery, The Bull Pen has undergone a contemporary update to its menu, interiors and branding. It reopened from Thursday 16th July 2026. Starting out as a small tearoom back in 1993, built in the original pen for the farm’s bull, The Bull Pen soon became a popular destination for locals and visitors to the area. Regularly at capacity, The Bull Pen extended in 2018, increasing covers from 40 to over 120. These changes mark the beginning of the next chapter in this local favourite’s ongoing evolution. Regulars will notice that best-selling dishes remain on the menu, with a reimagined and elevated flair to them. Dishes like the signature Welsh Rarebit, Full English and Jacket Potatoes. “…But it is also time for something new” Paul Haworth, Managing Director of The Bull Pen explains. “We looked at sales figures and customer feedback and have made decisions to our menu offering from there, coupled with the instinctive, modern direction we want to move in. The updates we’ve made are to help future-proof our beloved Bull Pen, ensuring we are across the modern trends and seasonal ingredients food-

We’re so thrilled to have a wonderful Head Chef in Abbie who is excited to bring some finesse to our menus.” Abbie Mallinson joins The Bull Pen as Head Chef after running kitchens at the likes of Apple Butter in London’s Covent Garden and The Clink in Brixton. “I cannot wait to launch the new menu at The Bull Pen” Abbie comments, “It’s a truly unique setting with such history. It’s a real pleasure to be able to design a menu that speaks to both the location and story of the farm. Elevated flavours, gorgeous plating, seasonality and working with local producers is going to feature a lot in the new dishes.” New menu items include a Smoothie Bowl, Buttermilk Pancakes, Mediterranean Flatbread, and Seasonal Farm Kitchen Salads, plus so much more. A separate Little Farmers menu aims to satisfy hungry young tummies, offering Little Pancake Stacks, a melt-in-the-mouth Toastie and a Sausage Brioche Bun. Alongside the Bull Pen’s most popular items, the drinks menu introduces new Bottled Beer by Hawkstone Brewery, cooling Iced Matchas (ceremonial grade), and Chai Lattes,

Working with local Interior Designer Nadia Rose, the internal feel of The Bull Pen has also been updated. “We wanted to create something cohesive between what has traditionally been two very distinct areas of the restaurant - the original tearoom and the extension. We’ve aimed to soften the feel and inject some personality and farm history into this beloved community hub.” Front-of-House Manager, Mary Lee is excited to speak to customers about the new items on the menu. “We’ve all been lucky enough, as a team, to sample each and every delicious dish on the menu to make sure everyone is ready for re-opening. Two hands, a piece of dough, and a local story My Authentic Pizza began in a tiny garage beside a pub garden. But for Vera, it was never simply a business. It is her creation, something deeply personal, made with her hands, her passion and the desire to make people feel something through food. For almost two years, that little garage was where the story quietly took shape. There was no glamorous restaurant and no big company behind it. There was an oven, dough, hard work and a belief that something simple, when made with care, could become something special.
34 SEPTEMBER 2026
P
eople came. They tasted the pizza. They came back. They told others. And for Vera, that became the greatest reward — not simply selling a pizza, but watching somebody enjoy something she had created. A smile after the first bite, a compliment, a familiar face returning again. Those small moments gave meaning to everything. The logo tells that story. At its centre, two hands hold a simple piece of dough. The hands represent the human touch behind every creation — work, patience, care and passion. And the dough represents possibility: something simple, waiting to be shaped into something that can bring pleasure to somebody else. Two words: SIMPLY CRAFT. Take something simple. Respect it. Give it time. Put something of yourself into it. Then give it to somebody else. Because food can be more than something we eat. It can carry an emotion
from the person who creates it to the person who receives it. Today, My Authentic Pizza has a new home inside the Cavendish Arms, Hatfield, only a few steps from where its story began. But the two remain separate identities. The Cavendish Arms is a Hatfield pub with its own history, character and future. My Authentic Pizza has its own story, identity and soul. Two different stories, simply walking together. The little garage may no longer be its home, but the meaning behind My Authentic Pizza has never changed. Two hands still hold the dough. Vera still creates. And somewhere on the other side, somebody takes that first bite and smiles. That moment is what makes it all worthwhile. Not simply to feed people. To make them feel something. A unique Silver Featureline evokes the subtle jewellery elements worn by the well-tailored, such as cufflinks and a dress watch. The theme extends inside with Navy Blue and Arctic White leathers – subtly uplifted with embroideries and pinstriping – Open Pore White Wood, and a hidden-untilrevealed embroidery behind the rear armrest that recalls the quiet flourish of a colourful jacket lining.
ROLLS-ROYCE AND SAVILE ROW: A QUIET KINSHIP Rolls-Royce and Savile Row have long shared a commitment to Bespoke. The term itself is closely associated with Savile Row, where cloth was traditionally described as being ‘bespoken’, or spoken for, by an individual client. For RollsRoyce, alongside its design and engineering 42 SEPTEMBER 2026

in the heart of Mayfair, just moments from ‘the Row’. The marque’s co-founder, Charles Rolls, who would accompany test drives in the capital, was also famous for his personal style. While he was affectionately nicknamed ‘Dirty Rolls’ for the engine oil that marked his clothes during his time at Cambridge University, he was also known to be immaculately dressed for formal occasions, down to the silver pocket watch in his waistcoat. With the showroom so close by, he would have been familiar with Savile Row and its traditions, as many of the marque’s clients still are today.
INTERIOR DETAILS: A HIDDEN FLOURISH Tailoring references are present throughout the interior, where the commission’s boldest flourish awaits discovery. Lowering the rear centre armrest reveals a Bespoke embroidery, hidden like the colourful lining of a tailored jacket. The design is a plan view of the square trees in the courtyard at the Home of Rolls-Royce at Goodwood, and the shadows they cast. The piece comprises seven colours, took nine hours to create and includes 250,000 stitches and nearly two kilometres – 1,830 metres – of thread.
INTERIOR: A TRIBUTE TO TAILORING Beyond the hidden embroidery, the language of tailoring is woven throughout the interior. The seats are finished in Navy Blue and Arctic White leather. The carpets, lambswool floor mats and seatbelts are rendered in Navy Blue, with seat and door piping, contrast stitching and embroidered RR monograms in Selby Grey. The seats feature a Bespoke vertical run-stitch in Selby Grey, inspired by the pinstripe of a tailored suit – the first time Rolls-Royce has applied a pinstripe stitch to its seats. As with the meticulous pattern-matching of a tailored garment, the stitch is aligned to the geometry of each seat and framed by Selby Grey piping. The centre seam of each seat back meets the vertical embroidery of the Arctic White insert above. Set against the Navy Blue leather, the insert evokes a pressed white pocket square tucked into the breast pocket of a jacket. Each of the four inserts incorporates more than 16,600 stitches, embroidered tone-on-tone in two directions, like the warp and weft of woven cloth. The fascia, steering-wheel spoke and door 44 SEPTEMBER 2026
uppers are dressed in tactile Open Pore White Wood veneer, complemented by Black Wood to the centre console lids.
TAILORED TO THE LAST DETAIL Bespoke Illuminated Treadplates that feature the same design as the hidden embroidery are fitted to all four door sills. Above them, stored within the motor car, are bespoke umbrellas with canopies in Navy Blue, beading in Selby Grey and handles in Arctic White, which complete Ghost Savile Row. TIME AND SPEED: REUNITED BREITLING AND ASTON MARTIN PRESENT Top Time Tribute to the iconic DB5
I
ntroduced in 1963, one of the world’s most iconic on-screen cars, the Aston Martin DB5, became synonymous with British culture, design, and innovation, firmly establishing Aston Martin as one of Britain’s most desirable luxury brands. Today, Aston Martin and Breitling proudly bring that shared legacy to the wrist with the Top Time B01 Chronograph 41 Tribute to Aston Martin DB5 - presented in three distinct limited editions. In the 1960s, the Top Time was Breitling’s unconventional chronograph, created for a new, youthful, speed-driven audience. When a Top Time ref. 2002 appeared on Sean Connery’s wrist in Thunderball (1965), worn alongside the Aston Martin DB5, two icons of the era shared a defining moment in design history. It marked the first Q-modified watch in the James Bond series, and a chapter where speed and style found a common language. That moment is reinterpreted here through material and form. Wood-inlayed details, handcoloured gradient leather straps, and refined dial executions echo the interiors of the Aston Martin DB5. The result is a watch that captures the feel of being behind the wheel of Aston Martin’s classic grand tourer. Every detail of the Top Time Tribute to Aston
46 SEPTEMBER 2026
Martin DB5 brings together two design legacies: the tactile richness of Aston Martin interiors and the modern-retro codes of the Top Time. The cushionshaped case, grooved corners, and mushroom pushers recall the distinctive profile of the 1960s chronograph, while the “squircle” subdials capture the look of classic car dashboard gauges. A wooden inner ring draws on the DB5’s steering wheel, and the hand-coloured gradient leather strap reflects the depth and tone of fine automotive upholstery. Together, these elements create a watch shaped with the same attention to detail. “This chronograph blends form with true function,” says Breitling’s Head of Product Design Pablo Widmer. “As with the Aston Martin DB5, its beauty lies in its lines, materials, and finishings.”
“A wooden inner ring draws on the DB5’s steering wheel, and the hand-coloured gradient leather strap reflects the depth and tone of fine automotive upholstery”
The collection is offered in three editions: Stainless steel with a silver dial, limited to 1,022 pieces, offers a balanced take that’s closest in spirit to the original Top Time ref. 2002. Steel and platinum with a black lacquered dial, limited to 315 pieces, introduces contrast and depth, with the platinum bezel adding weight and presence against the high-gloss black surface. 18k red gold with onyx dial, limited to 250 individually numbered pieces, brings an even more elevated expression. The dial is cut from natural onyx, the first use of the stone by Breitling, revealing a unique depth and lustre. Across all three, the design details translate the Aston Martin DB5’s interior craftsmanship into a contemporary chronograph. Manufacture performance The engine of the watch is the Breitling Manufacture Caliber 01, a COSC-certified chronograph movement designed for precision and reliability. Its column-wheel architecture and vertical clutch ensure smooth, accurate operation, while a 70-hour power reserve supports extended wear. Visible through the open sapphire-crystal caseback, the movement is finished with a dedicated Aston Martin–engraved rotor – rhodium-plated or 18k red gold, depending on
the version. Each edition pairs this performance with a design language rooted in one of the most recognisable cars ever made. Marek Reichman, Executive Vice President and Chief Creative Officer at Aston Martin says: “These editions represent something truly distinct from anything we’ve created before. The collaboration with Breitling brought together two brands with a shared appreciation for timeless design, craftsmanship, and innovation, allowing us to exchange ideas in a way that felt both natural and ambitious. Inspired by the enduring elegance of the Aston Martin DB5 and our shared heritage of iconic design, the watch captures a balance of beauty, precision, and performance. Every detail has been carefully considered to reflect the character and authenticity synonymous with both brands. The result is a watch that feels contemporary today, yet timeless for generations to come.” The Top Time Tribute to Aston Martin DB5 revisits a moment when two distinct approaches to design aligned. One shaped in performance and proportion, the other in precision and form. Together, they continue to be markers of style, that stand the test of time. astonmartin.com/en-gb breitling.com/gb-en

Celebrating Childhood, Inspiring Futures at
A
EDGE GROVE
t Edge Grove, we believe that childhood should be celebrated. It is a precious time filled with curiosity, discovery, laughter, friendship and endless possibilities. It is a time for children to ask questions, get muddy, perform on stage, discover a new talent and develop the confidence to try something they have never done before. Set within 45 acres of beautiful Hertfordshire countryside, Edge Grove provides children with the space, encouragement and opportunities to simply be children, while developing the confidence, independence and skills they need for whatever comes next. From the very beginning of their journey in Pre-School through to their final years in Year 8, every child at Edge Grove is known, valued and encouraged to discover where their individual talents and interests can take them. We recognise that no two children are the same, and our role is to nurture each child as an individual, celebrating their successes and supporting them through 62 SEPTEMBER 2026
challenges along the way. Our approach combines an ambitious and engaging curriculum with exceptional pastoral care and a wealth of opportunities beyond the classroom. Whether children are creating in the Art Room, performing on stage, exploring the natural world in Forest School, taking to the sports fields, swimming or solving problems in the classroom, they are encouraged to explore, imagine, create and discover.
Where Childhood Begins At Edge Grove, we understand just how important the earliest years of a child’s education are. The experiences children have during Pre-School and Reception help build the foundations not only for future learning but also for confidence, independence and a sense of belonging. Children learn through exploration, play, creativity and meaningful experiences, developing a genuine love of learning from the very start. There is laughter, imagination and plenty of opportunity to get outdoors and make the most of Edge Grove’s wonderful surroundings. Our experienced Early Years team works closely with families to ensure every child feels safe, happy and confident as they begin their school journey. Pre-School offers an educationally rich and nurturing environment in which children develop the skills they need for the years ahead. With access to the wider school and its exceptional facilities, our youngest pupils benefit from opportunities that allow them to explore far beyond the walls of their classroom. From specialist teaching and creative activities to outdoor learning and Forest School, every day brings new opportunities for discovery. The emphasis is always on developing the whole child, helping children grow socially, emotionally and academically while ensuring the magic and wonder of childhood remain at the heart of their experience. In Reception, children take the next exciting step on that journey. Through a carefully balanced combination of purposeful play, exploration and structured learning, they develop essential foundations in literacy and numeracy while building confidence and independence. We want children to arrive at school each morning excited about what the day might bring. Discovering Their Own Edge As children progress through Edge Grove, the opportunities available to them continue to grow. Our broad and ambitious curriculum is designed to challenge and inspire, while an extensive programme of sport, music, drama, art, outdoor education and enrichment ensures every child has the opportunity to discover something they love. We believe that education should open doors. A child may discover a love of performing in our theatre, a talent for art, a passion for competitive

sport or an enthusiasm for exploring the natural world. Others may thrive through academic challenge, leadership opportunities or the chance to work as part of a team. These experiences are just as important as the knowledge children gain in the classroom. Preparing for the Future As pupils approach the end of their Edge Grove journey, they begin to look ahead to the next stage of their education. We prepare them for this transition with the confidence, knowledge and independence they need to thrive at their chosen senior schools and beyond. We want our pupils to leave with strong academic foundations, but also as confident, curious and resilient young people who are ready to embrace the opportunities and challenges ahead. However, at Edge Grove, childhood is never rushed. For families, choosing a school is about much more than choosing where a child will be educated. It is about choosing the environment in which they will grow, the experiences that will shape them and the community that will support them through some of the most important years of their lives. At Edge Grove, we are proud to provide a place where children can discover their strengths, embrace new opportunities and enjoy the magic of being young. A place where childhood is celebrated. A place where futures are inspired. Come and discover where childhood is celebrated and futures are inspired at our Open Mornings on Saturday 3rd October and Tuesday 6th October. t the heart of our educational philosophy is the belief that a truly exceptional education extends far beyond the classroom. Our extensive enrichment programme encourages children to explore new passions, develop their talents, and gain a broader perspective on the world around them. In 2026, an incredible 68% of Year 8 leavers were awarded at least one scholarship to their senior school across music, art, sport, drama, design technology and academics, highlighting the depth of specialist teaching across the school and the success of our unique enrichment pathways. as accelerating their musical development and performance skills, these groups make rehearsing fun, promote teamwork and instil pride in contributing to the musical life of the school. The wide variety of clubs and activities we offer includes options such as robotics, sculpture, bushcraft, and even crochet. There really is something for everyone. Thanks to our longer school day, pupils have the time to pursue existing interests, discover hidden talents and learn new skills, without needing to look beyond school. Unusually for a prep school, our commitment to enrichment includes the chance for children to go on trips to the USA and Africa. Pupils in Years 7-8 on this year’s STEM trip to Florida saw the live launch of Artemis II! From NASA astronaut training at the Kennedy Space Center to learning about animal habitats in the Everglades, the trip is an extraordinary chance to explore science in the real world. This autumn, 33 pupils will be heading back to Zambia to meet our charity partners, participate in community projects and encounter some of Africa’s incredible wildlife. Pupils describe the trip as a life-changing experience that leaves a positive impact on their outlook for years to come. Heath Mount’s next Open Morning takes place on September 24th 2026. T
ucked away on 76 acres of Hertfordshire countryside between Hemel Hempstead and Kings Langley, Abbot’s Hill, a co-educational independent school and nursery for children aged 6 months to 16 years, offers something increasingly rare: space - both literally and figuratively- for children to grow into themselves. Named The Sunday Times Parent Power Independent 11–16 School of the Year for 2026, the school has built its reputation on a simple belief: academic ambition and a well-rounded childhood aren’t in competition, they depend on each other. That philosophy shows up in the results. Strong GCSE outcomes sit alongside a co-curricular programme spanning sport, the arts, Duke of Edinburgh and outdoor learning. Pupils are taught in small classes, where personalised support ensures everyone is encouraged to exceed their potential. Walk the grounds and you’ll find a school that refuses a one-size-fits-all approach. Wellbeing sits at the centre of everything, built on the understanding that pupils simply do better when they’re happy. With over 50 lunchtime and afterschool clubs on offer. there’s genuine room to explore passions beyond the classroom. Facilities include a Forest School, swimming pool, sports hall, science labs, and a theatre. Abbot’s Hill is also in the midst of an exciting

or over 40 years, the Gan has been a much-loved part of the local community, a place where generations of children have grown, learned and made lasting memories. Many members of our community today have their own childhood connections with the Gan, making it a truly special and historic setting. For me, taking over the Gan feels like coming full circle. After a busy career in sales and marketing, I found myself made redundant with a one-yearold child. Having only lived in Hertfordshire for a couple of years, I was looking for a new direction and a sense of community. I reached out to the Bushey Synagogue, where I had been attending the weekly crèche, and was welcomed with open arms. Someone recognised my natural connection with children and asked if I would like to work at the Gan. That moment changed the direction of my life. I fell in love with early years education and went on to build my career around nurturing and supporting young children, studying at night school alongside my work. Eventually, I opened my own preschool and nursery on Bushey Hall

Then, in January, fate brought me back to where it all began, when I was given the opportunity to take over the early years nursery at the Gan. Today, Bush-E-Babes at the Gan combines the heritage and community spirit of this much loved setting with a fresh, modern approach to early years education. Inclusion is at the heart of our ethos, reflecting the diverse and multicultural community around us. Merchant Taylors’ Pupils Excel in 2026 GCSE Results
T
here was much to celebrate at Merchant Taylors’ today as pupils received an exceptional set of GCSE results, with 45% of all grades awarded at grade 9 – the highest proportion recorded on Results Day since the return to examination-based assessment following the pandemic. Grade 9 was also the most commonly awarded grade across the year group. Overall, 72% of grades were awarded at grades 9–8 and 89% at grades 9–7, demonstrating the strength and consistency of achievement across the cohort. Ten pupils achieved the outstanding feat of a clean sweep of grade 9s across all ten of their GCSE subjects, while 43 pupils – more than a quarter of the year group – achieved exclusively grades 9 and 8. There were impressive results across a broad range of subjects, reflecting the diversity of the pupils’ interests and strengths. In Mathematics, more than 86% of grades were awarded at 9-8 and 98% at 9-7. The Sciences also enjoyed another strong year: 56% of Chemistry grades, 54% of Biology grades and 49% of Physics grades awarded at grade 9, with more than 78% of grades across all three Sciences awarded at 9 or 8. Elsewhere, 65% of German grades and 47% of English Language grades were awarded at grade 9, while 82% of Religious Studies grades achieved a 9 or 8. Results Day also marks the beginning of the

next stage of their academic journey at Taylors’. As they enter the Sixth Form, they will have the opportunity to focus more deeply on the subjects that excite and challenge them, while continuing to pursue their interests beyond the classroom. Head Master Sam Baldock said: “These are exceptional results and the boys should be enormously proud of what they have achieved. They reflect a great deal of hard work, but also the expertise and encouragement of the teachers who have supported them along the way. “I also want to recognise the support of our families. For many, this has been their first experience of navigating public examinations alongside their sons, with all the anticipation that brings. Their encouragement and support have mattered enormously, and today is a moment for them to celebrate too. “What excites me most is what these results make possible. GCSEs give each boy a strong academic foundation, but Sixth Form is an opportunity to go further: to explore the subjects that genuinely fascinate him, develop his own ideas and discover where his particular strengths might take him. I am very much looking forward to seeing this year group take that next step at Taylors’.” We congratulate all our GCSE pupils on their achievements and look forward to welcoming them back in September as they begin the next stage of their Merchant Taylors’ education.

At Haberdashers’ Elstree Schools, students benefit from an exceptional education that combines the strengths of single-sex learning with the opportunities of a co-educational environment, preparing young people to thrive in a rapidly changing world. Having been named Independent School of the Year 2025, alongside receiving the award for Outstanding Educational Partnerships, Habs continues to demonstrate a clear vision for modern education. The recognition reflected not only academic excellence, but also the schools’ commitment to creating meaningful opportunities beyond their own campus. At the heart of Habs’ success is its purpose: to empower young people to make a profound impact in the world. Through its award-winning Partnerships Programme with six local state schools, Habs delivers more than 52 hours of curriculum support and enrichment each week, reaching almost 2,000 students and involving over 500 Habs pupils and 56 members of staff. As well as developing leadership skills among Habs students, the programme has helped improve attendance among disadvantaged pupils by more than 10%. With a mission to remain at the forefront of education, Habs encourages independence, resilience and curiosity throughout school life.
78 SEPTEMBER 2026
Through the Habs Innovation Centre, students are encouraged to engage with emerging ideas and real-world challenges, from artificial intelligence and sustainability to entrepreneurship and digital innovation. Academic achievement remains a hallmark of a Habs education, but the schools are equally committed to developing well-rounded young people. A strong pastoral care programme supports students’ emotional, social and spiritual wellbeing, while an exceptional co-curricular offering enables them to discover passions beyond the classroom through sport, music, drama, debating, leadership and countless other opportunities. With world-class facilities, continued investment in the campus and a culture built on ambition and community, Haberdashers’ Elstree Schools continue to exemplify what modern independent education can achieve, nurturing young people who are not only academically accomplished, but prepared to make a meaningful impact in an increasingly complex world. More Than Just the Classroom The Benefits of a Private Education
W
ith choices ranging from traditional boarding schools to progressive alternative curricula, there is likely to be a private school to match almost every child’s needs and personality. Parents choose private education for a variety of reasons, from academic opportunities and specialist teaching to community values, and for many families it is considered a valuable longterm investment in their child’s education and development. Enhanced academic opportunities One of the key advantages associated with private schools is the opportunity to access a challenging and varied educational experience. Many schools offer advanced courses, internationally recognised programmes and a broad selection of extracurricular learning opportunities. These are designed not only to improve academic achievement but also to develop critical thinking, 80 SEPTEMBER 2026
creativity, confidence and independence. The depth and breadth of study can also help prepare pupils effectively for further education and future academic challenges. Smaller class sizes Private schools often place considerable importance on maintaining smaller class sizes. With fewer pupils in each classroom, teachers can provide more individual attention and identify areas where a student may need additional support. At the same time, pupils who are excelling can be encouraged to take their learning further. This more personalised approach can promote greater engagement, stronger understanding and a classroom environment that responds more closely to individual needs. Dedicated teachers Teachers at private schools are often highly qualified, experienced and passionate about their

subjects. Many bring specialist knowledge or additional training to their teaching, combined with a strong commitment to helping pupils achieve their potential. In smaller school communities, teachers may also be more accessible to students and can become important mentors and role models. Smaller classes provide further opportunities for teachers to offer additional guidance or introduce more challenging work when appropriate. Strong parental involvement Communication between families and schools is often an important part of private education. Parents may be encouraged to participate through regular meetings, school events, volunteering and other community initiatives. Being actively involved can help parents feel more connected to their child’s education and create a stronger partnership between home and school. This collaborative approach can also give families a clearer understanding of their child’s progress, interests and achievements. A supportive environment Private schools generally have clear expectations surrounding behaviour, respect and personal responsibility. Smaller staff-to-student ratios can make it easier for staff to monitor pupils, identify concerns and respond to problems at an early stage. A close-knit school community can also encourage positive relationships and mutual respect, helping to create an environment where students feel comfortable, supported and able to concentrate on their learning. Excellent resources Many private schools make significant investments in facilities and resources designed to enhance the educational experience. Well-equipped classrooms, libraries, science laboratories, sports facilities, art spaces and technology can give students opportunities to explore different subjects and interests. Access to these resources can help pupils discover their strengths, develop new skills and pursue activities that might not otherwise be available to them. Extracurricular activities Although academic achievement remains important, private schools frequently recognise 82 SEPTEMBER 2026

the value of providing a well-rounded education. Pupils may have opportunities to take part in sports, music, drama, visual arts, clubs and other activities. Beyond being enjoyable, these experiences can help develop teamwork, leadership, creativity, communication and social skills. They also provide a valuable balance to classroom-based learning and give students the chance to build confidence in different settings. Preparing students for the future Private schools can offer opportunities that extend beyond standard curriculum requirements, with specialist programmes in subjects such as mathematics, science, the arts and athletics. Their flexibility can allow them to respond to changes in technology, education and wider society, helping students prepare for a variety of future opportunities. Families may also choose private education because of the tailored support available for children with particular learning needs, with individual approaches designed to help each pupil make the most of their abilities.

SCIENCE
WITH SARAH
“H
aving spent more than a decade as a private Science Tutor (as well as tutoring in a school during the pandemic) I have seen classroom learning transform (the good and the bad) and the negative impacts of increased screen time from phones on behaviour and selfesteem. The most alarming change appears to be a drop in basic study skills, including research and critical thinking, revision planning, notetaking and organisation of homework tasks (exacerbated by the overreliance on AI tools). A concerning drop in girls’ GCSE results for the last few years is another new trend to consider. There are many useful online resources to assist learning, I regularly recommend Cognito videos available free on YouTube, as well as old favourites such as CGP revision guides. Students learn and revise differently, so a tailor-made approach is needed to help each achieve their best. As tutors we want our students to do their best in the subject we tutor, however I find my students come to me with questions about general learning,
86 SEPTEMBER 2026
study skills, interview practice, post-16 options and university application guidance, and requests for me to tutor them in additional subjects. Much of my time is also spent on confidence building and exam question understanding, rather than science content, when these skills improve the actual science becomes quite easy and much more interesting to them! I encourage my students to take on national and international competitions in science and essay writing, additional reading, debating and other extra-curricular activities such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Although I’m initially hired by parents to ‘plug’ learning gaps in science, I often become a source of additional pastoral support. The key to success is getting the right support in place as early as possible. My biggest reward from tutoring is seeing my students happy and confident and often developing a passion for science to closely match my own!” unscramblescience@gmail.com

Winning Isn’t the Only Lesson That Matters By Mr Fleet: Head of Maths, Sarum Hall School For many people, success in competition is measured by where you finish. If that were true, then our Year 6 team’s experience at the QuizClub National Maths Championship Grand Final might be seen as disappointing. I couldn’t disagree more.
88 SEPTEMBER 2026
R
eaching the Grand Final at the University of Oxford was, in itself, a remarkable achievement. More than 300 teams entered the competition, yet Sarum Hall School earned its place among the nation’s very best young mathematicians. That didn’t happen by chance. It came through commitment, resilience and a willingness to embrace challenge. What impressed me most was not simply the mathematical ability of our Year 6 team, but their determination to improve. Week after week, they attended practice sessions, tackled demanding homework and pushed themselves well beyond the Year 6 curriculum. Along the way, they explored topics such as surface area, polyhedrons, platonic solids and percentage change, while sharpening the teamwork and problem-solving skills that are just as valuable as mathematical knowledge. Competitions like this also show children that maths is exciting. Solving rapid-fire problems against the clock, working collaboratively and competing alongside the country’s strongest schools transforms maths from a classroom
subject into an exhilarating challenge. Whether answering questions in 30 seconds or discussing tactics on the train to Oxford, the team discovered that maths can be both demanding and enormous fun. None of this would have been possible without the support surrounding them. Their parents gave up time to encourage them, accompany them and cheer them on throughout the journey. At school, staff and classmates followed their progress with genuine excitement and pride. That sense of community reminds our pupils that their achievements matter to all of us. Although we did not return home with the championship trophy, we came back with something far more valuable: confidence, experience and the motivation to aim even higher. As one of the girls remarked afterwards, she would love the chance to compete again and improve. To me, that is the greatest success of all. Winning is wonderful, but inspiring children to love learning, embrace challenge and believe in themselves is an achievement that lasts far longer than any medal. sarumhallschool.co.uk

The Burberry Trench: Crafting an Icon 21 September 2026 – 3 January 2027 Prince Consort Gallery, V&A
V
&A and Burberry presents ‘The Burberry Trench: Crafting an Icon’ – a free display at V&A South Kensington celebrating a fashion staple that has adapted and endured through the decades, marking Burberry’s 170th anniversary. Bringing together rare material from the Burberry Archive and the V&A collection, the display traces the history of the Burberry trench from its origins as practical outerwear and military attire to a world-renowned icon of fashion, rooted in a contemporary British sensibility and celebrated globally. Located in the museum’s rarely seen Prince Consort Gallery, which once held fabrics from the textile collection in its mahogany cabinets, it offers a snapshot of the history of Burberry, a house that epitomises timeless British luxury. 106 SEPTEMBER 2026
Beginning with ‘Invention’, the display explores Thomas Burberry’s invention of cotton gabardine in 1879 and how its use in the Burberry trench established the coat as a sought-after piece of protective outerwear, combining function and style. It highlights the trench’s evolution into a design classic that has remained relevant for more than a century. Unpicking the carefully crafted elements that make up the Burberry trench, the focus on ‘Craft’ will highlight details such as the handfinished collar and distinctive House Check lining, the storm flap and detachable throat latch, all of which provide protection when the weather turns. The display concludes with ‘Creativity’, spotlighting 19 standout runway looks from the past two and a half decades, including designs by Chief Creative Officers Daniel Lee and

Christopher Bailey, celebrating the continued reinvention of the Burberry trench. It will also trace the long standing relationship between Burberry and the V&A, two pillars of British fashion that share a commitment to ensuring their heritage and collections inspire the next generation of creatives. Oriole Cullen, Senior Curator, Fashion and Textiles at the V&A, said: ‘In advance of the V&A and Burberry partnership on the forthcoming Fashion Gallery, we are delighted to work with the Burberry Archive to showcase the history of the celebrated trench coat: a British fashion staple that has stood the test of time and continues to evolve over a century on.’ Carly Eck, Brand Curator, Burberry, said: ‘As we mark 170 years of the house, we are thrilled to partner with the V&A to celebrate the enduring legacy of the Burberry trench coat – a global design icon rooted in British craftsmanship and a symbol of innovation, creativity and timeless style. A myriad of objects from the brand’s Archive will be publicly exhibited for the first time – from early 20th-century catalogues to a Burberry trench coat

A versatile, narrow scarf crafted from 100% British wool and organic cotton, the twilly is designed to bridge the gap between casual and formal elegance. “The ‘pussy bow’ style we have created with our tartan twilly is also known as a lavallière,” says cofounder Antonia. “Inspired by the Duchess of La Vallière and the 19th-century French intellectuals, it’s a look that brings a sense of history into a modern wardrobe.” While the block-printed twillies offer a soft, feminine feel, the tartan versions provide a more sculptural silhouette. “The structure and warmth of the wool plays perfectly to the heritage trend,” adds co-founder Susanna. “It’s about celebrating the slow, precise craft of both textiles.”
108 SEPTEMBER 2026
“The brand is modernising heritage textile processes to create one-ofa-kind pieces” The Antana Twilly can be worn in several different ways including: • A Handbag Accessory: Tightly wrapping a twilly around handbag handles protects the leather from oils and wear, while adding colour. Tying a twilly into a bow on the base of a handle adds a feminine touch. • A Hair Style/Headband: Wearing it over the top of the head for a chic, boho look or wrapping the twilly around a hair tie or weaving it into a braid adds an elegant accent to an outfit. • As a Lavallière: Tied as a classic pussy-bow or draped loosely as a necktie. It can also be paired with a brooch or tucked into a shirt. • A Belt or Wristlet: Tying the twilly around the wrist as a bracelet adds a pop of colour to the arm. Using the longer tartan twilly or tying two twillies together as a belt. antanastyles.com

How to choose the perfect armchair or lounge chair Your friends are all tracking their Strava data, every other item on the shelf is packed with protein, and another Pilates studio has just opened up on the high street. We’re undoubtedly in an era where movement is more encouraged than ever for the benefit of both our physical and mental health. Great. But as we spend more of our time moving, the time we spend relaxing becomes ever more sacred. Let’s face it: at times, we have to get off our feet. You’re probably sitting reading this right now. So why not do it in the most comfortable, stylish way possible?
114 SEPTEMBER 2026
W
hat you need is a lounge chair ... or is it an armchair? Actually, what is the difference? What material should you go for? Will it be right for the job? All questions we’re taking on in our all-encompassing guide that has everything covered (or uncovered, depending on preference) when deciding on your future lounge or armchair. Kick back, relax and let us do the rest. Don’t forget to come and try them for yourself at our showroom when you’re done reading. What to prioritise? - Both armchairs and lounge chairs are high-use pieces of furniture; they’re often in the living room, which means they’re a favourite of residents and guests alike. So, yes, they have to look good, but few pieces in your house need to be for repeated use by people of all shapes and sizes. Habits and hobbies. Prioritise two main things. What it is made of and how it was made. The rest is a matter of individual needs. Let’s break it down. 1) Materials: Look for seating solutions that make a point of using the
finest ingredients. The most durable timbers, like oak or ash, if you’re going for a Scandi look. High-grade leather for that modern warmth. While it sounds like stating the obvious, the better the quality of the materials, the better the experience. Next up, 2) Manufacturing: History is the key to your future furniture. Buy from brands that have been doing what they do for decades, if not longer. With lifetimes of experience behind their manufacturing process and time-tested, durable joinery you can trust to last. What is its intended function? - What you’ll be using your new chair for will play a huge part in your decision. Functionality dictates material, size, shape, placement and features you’ll need. The way we see it, armchairs should be comfortable enough that you can do anything for hours, while lounge chairs are comfortable enough that you could fall asleep for hours without doing anything. So, if you want a piece for a reading nook, or for watching a whole season of your favourite series, you’ll want an armchair that keeps you
upright, elevated and on task. Durable in material like leather and compact in size to fit in with the rest of the room. Contrastingly, make sure your lounge chair is reclining, softly upholstered in wool or velvet and go big; make it the main event. Not forgetting those of you looking for an occasional chair, you want light, mobile and a finish that will blend with the surrounding space- nothing too bold or eye-catching. Size and spacing - While the possibilities are endless in terms of the upholstery and style, one of the few things you cannot change while picking out new lounge seating is the size of the actual lounge. Spatial planning is a key consideration when narrowing down your options. Spare no detail when it comes to dimensions. Figure the footprint, seat height, and even the backrest to make sure it is the perfect fit. Ensure it doesn’t overwhelm the space and fits the rest of the setting. It should create a physical pathway throughout the room that allows people to circulate freely between sofa and seating. Leave room for accompanying side tables and account for unique parts of the architectural structure. TOP TIP: As with any furniture purchase, the chair must get to its intended destination in one piece (or at least several undamaged ones). Does it fit through all door frames? Will you need specialist delivery to a high floor? It is the sort of thing that really cannot be left to guesswork, so if you have any doubts, best to speak to a specialist or, at the very least, measure to the millimetre and provide those details when purchasing, especially with made-to-order items that cannot be returned. Icons to know: Now, while your choice will be entirely down to personal preference, sometimes it
helps to know the legends of design; after all, they have achieved that status for a reason. A mixture of their pioneering style, brand heritage, and incredible build quality makes them, in our eyes, front-runners for your consideration. Throughout furniture history, lounge chairs have been something of a symbolic representation for each of their specific design styles. Scandi interiors have Arne Jacobsen’s acclaimed Egg Chair, and Mid-century has the instantly recognisable Eames Lounge Chair, the historic Bauhaus has its Wassily Chair, and of course Italian modern has gentle giants like the Soriana by Cassina or the Camaleonda by B&B Italia. Where to buy: There is no better research than sampling different furniture options for yourself. Being embraced by the richness and warmth of a leather lounge chair, witnessing the majesty of an authentic Eames lounge chair in person, really gives you a feel for the investment you’re about to make. Emotions aside, trying a piece for the first time is almost infinitely better for customer satisfaction. Being able to make a decision based on personal comfort and visual preference almost guarantees long-term satisfaction. It is why our 25,000 sq ft physical space has been our crowning contribution to design in London for the last 30 years. A place where you can sample designs from across the interior spectrum. Visiting our showroom allows you access to the rarest designs and the latest in luxury. You can also look to purchase your new lounge seating with us online through our extensive collection of armchairs and lounge chairs in countless finishes and upholsteries. chaplins.co.uk

Simple Lighting Updates to Transform Your Home James Kendall of KES Lighting & Home shares affordable ways to refresh your space, from swapping fixtures and bulbs to creating a more layered lighting scheme. Highlight a feature with accent lighting Accent lighting is a simple but highly effective way to add depth and interest to a room. Using directional or adjustable lights allows you to draw attention to specific features such as open shelving, a decorative splashback, architectural details or a favourite piece of artwork. This technique is often used by interior designers to give a space a more layered and curated appearance. Adding subtle lighting to highlight these elements can make the room feel more thoughtfully designed without requiring any major structural changes. Even small additions, such as under cabinet lighting in the kitchen or a spotlight positioned to illuminate a statement object, can make a noticeable difference. Switch out your fixtures One of the easiest ways to update a room is by upgrading your light fixtures. Over time, fittings can begin to look dated and swapping them for a more contemporary design can instantly modernise the space. Replacing an old pendant with a striking statement light above a dining table or kitchen island can dramatically change the character of the room and create a new focal point. Similarly, adding elegant wall lights can introduce an extra layer of lighting while also bringing a decorative element to the space. With so many styles available, from sleek modern finishes to classic designs in brass or glass, simply changing your fixtures can provide a quick yet impactful refresh. Change your bulbs Sometimes the smallest adjustments make the biggest difference. Switching to warm tone bulbs is one of the simplest ways to improve the atmosphere in your home. Many homes still use cooler white lighting, which can feel harsh and clinical, particularly in living spaces. Warm white bulbs create a softer, more welcoming glow that enhances natural materials and textures such as wood, stone and fabrics. This subtle change can instantly make living rooms, bedrooms and dining areas feel more comfortable and inviting, helping to create a relaxed environment that feels better suited to everyday living. 118 SEPTEMBER 2026
Add stylish table lamps Table lamps are another quick and affordable way to refresh a room while also improving its lighting balance. Layered lighting is key to creating a comfortable and flexible space, and table lamps provide softer pools of light that help break up overhead lighting. Symmetry can also play an important role in creating a sense of harmony within a room. A matching pair of table lamps placed on bedside tables, a console table or a sideboard instantly creates a polished and cohesive look. This approach works particularly well in bedrooms and living rooms, where softer lighting helps establish a calm and relaxed atmosphere. keslighting.co.uk

TRAVERTINE: W
Why the material defining modern luxury belongs in every room of the home.
arm, tactile and effortlessly refined, travertine has quietly become one of the most coveted finishes in considered homes. Its natural veining, soft neutral tones and sculptural quality bring an understated luxury to any room. It’s no surprise we’re seeing it everywhere, from statement dining tables and organic coffee tables to lighting, and storage. At Cult, we’re embracing travertine as part of a broader movement towards interiors with depth, texture and individuality. Homes are becoming more expressive, moving away from one-dimensional finishes in favour of layered materials that tell a story. Travertine sits perfectly within this shift, creating spaces that feel collected, confident and effortlessly considered. 124 SEPTEMBER 2026
The Statement Piece If there’s one place travertine truly shines, it’s the dining room. A travertine dining table immediately becomes the heart of the home, bringing sculptural presence while remaining inviting and liveable. Style it with warm walnut dining chairs, tactile upholstery or deep green velvets to create a space that feels relaxed rather than formal. Eye-catching Luxury In the living room, an organic travertine coffee table offers the perfect focal point. Curved silhouettes continue to dominate interiors, and travertine’s natural texture softens these sculptural forms beautifully. Finish the look with layered rugs, oversized ceramics and ambient lighting for a space that feels calm, curated and luxurious. All in the Details Not every introduction to travertine needs to be a commitment. Side tables, lamp bases and console tables are an effortless way to weave the material into your home, creating moments of texture without overwhelming a scheme.
And for those looking to achieve the aesthetic with everyday practicality, travertine-effect finishes offer an ideal alternative. Designed for durability while capturing the beauty of natural stone, they bring the same elevated look with enhanced resilience for modern living. More than a passing trend, travertine represents a shift towards interiors that value authenticity, craftsmanship and longevity. It’s not about filling a room with stone, it’s about choosing one beautifully considered piece that transforms the way a space feels. Because sometimes, the most iconic design statements are the versatile pieces that don’t shout for attention. About Cult Furniture Get ready to discover designs that don’t just sit in a room – they make the room. Cult is a trend‑focused furniture brand with a big personality; that offers iconic, affordable design . We design our products to last, as well as being kinder to the environment. cultfurniture.com

Full of Character Why Texture is the Key to Creating Characterful Interiors
C
olour has always played a defining role in how we decorate our homes, but today’s most stylish interiors are looking beyond colour alone. Homeowners and designers are increasingly using texture, tactility and layered fabrics to create homes brimming with personality. Rather than replacing colour, texture is changing the way we use it. Today’s most successful interiors are not necessarily built around matching shades, but around combinations of colour, pattern and fabric that tell a story. From richly woven fabrics and tactile velvets to embroidered details, heritageinspired patterns and layered textiles, texture is becoming one of the defining elements that brings an interior scheme together. The decorating conversation has shifted. Rather than simply asking, “What colour should I paint this room?”, homeowners are increasingly asking, “How do I want this room to feel?” Texture has become one of the most effective ways to answer that question, helping create everything from cosy, cocooning spaces and relaxed Scandinavianinspired interiors to richly layered, nostalgic schemes full of personality. This renewed appreciation for texture comes at a time when interiors are becoming increasingly

expressive. The popularity of ‘Granny Chic’, heritage-inspired decorating and the revival of 1980s influences all reflect a growing desire for homes that feel loved and full of character. After years of pared-back minimalism, homeowners are rediscovering the joy of decorating with rich colours, layered patterns, vintage influences and tactile fabrics. As Debbie Leigh, Design Manager at ILIV explains, “People are becoming much more confident in the way they decorate. They’re mixing colour with pattern, vintage finds with contemporary pieces, and layering different fabrics to give their rooms a sense of individuality. Texture helps bring all of those elements together and transforms a room from looking beautiful to feeling like home.” iliv.co.uk

GOING GREEN Green Becomes the Natural Choice for Calmer Homes
P
orcelain Superstore highlights rising interest in nature-led colours across kitchens, bathrooms and living spaces Grounding shades of green are emerging as one of the defining interiors trends of the moment, according to independent tile retailer Porcelain Superstore. Analysis of Pinterest search data by the familyrun tile specialist reveals growing interest in green-led decorating schemes, with searches for rooms inspired by the natural shade climbing over the past year. Leading the charge is ‘green living room’ searches, which are up by 200% over the last 12 months. Searches for the term ‘green tiled bathroom’ are up by 60% while ‘green kitchen ideas’ searches have climbed by 40%*. Abbas Youssefi, Founder of Porcelain Superstore, said: “Green has been building momentum in interiors for several years, but we are now seeing a clear shift towards earthier, more grounding shades. Homeowners are moving away from brighter, more energetic greens and embracing tones such as olive, moss, sage and
132 SEPTEMBER 2026
forest, which feel calmer, warmer and easier to live with. “These shades have a strong connection to nature, so they can make a room feel more settled and restorative. That is particularly appealing in busy homes, where people are increasingly looking for interiors that provide a sense of comfort and escape.” For those looking to commit to green, Abbas advises to start with a splashback, shower enclosure or feature wall. Using green in a contained area allows the colour to make an impact without overwhelming the room, while still bringing a calm, grounded feel to the space. What’s more, green pairs naturally with warm whites, timber and neutral finishes making it an easy colour to introduce into an existing interior scheme. For homeowners ready to fully embrace green, Abbas urges them to consider using it across a larger surface, such as a tiled floor or even an entire bathroom. Richer shades like forest, emerald and deep olive can create a cocooning, luxurious feel, particularly when paired with warm metals, natural wood and layered lighting. The key is to vary the tones and textures slightly, so the finished space feels considered and characterful rather than overly uniform. Abbas added: “Green has enough personality to make an impact, but its natural undertones mean it is unlikely to date quickly. The result feels characterful, calming and closely connected to the outdoors.” From porcelainsuperstore.co.uk
