The new Lexus RX force is firmer, to reduce body roll and give the RX more performance-focused, flatter cornering.
Building a more rigid body
As well as advanced suspension tuning and technology, the new RX reaps the benefits of having a more rigid body – a fundamental quality that has a positive impact on its handling, comfort and cabin quietness, as well as providing more robust crash protection. Lexus has achieved this with innovative techniques, including a new ring-frame construction method to create stronger sections around the front and rear doors. Panel joints have been made stronger using high-tech body adhesives and laser screw welding, and high tensile strength steel has been used at strategic points throughout, including the A and B-pillars and underbody crossmembers. Extra spot welds around the rear of the body also contribute to the car’s strength and handling stability.

he new Lexus RX has achieved the top five-star ranking in independent Euro NCAP crash testing. The results also mark the highest test score for pedestrian protection yet achieved by any large SUV. Euro NCAP made special mention of the 79 per cent recorded by the RX in pedestrian impact testing, which included a maximum points score for leg and pelvic region protection and a notably high result for head protection. Jude Law said: “I love driving and the escapism that comes with it. The concept of The Life RX is such an interesting one, as it’s true that the right car can give you the keys to an extraordinary experience. The team at Lexus envisioned bringing something to life that was immersive and included everyone on the journey, and this was something I was keen to explore.” The new luxury SUV’s active suspension performance moves to a higher level, securing a smoother and more stable ride and a more rewarding driving experience. The system design has been updated and customers can specify an Adaptive Variable Suspension system for sportier performance. Ride and handling have also been improved thanks to the engineering of a significantly more rigid vehicle body.

Improved suspension
The new RX features an updated version of suspension system used in the current model: MacPherson struts at the front and a rear trailing arm and double wishbone set-up, with components fine-tuned for extra stability when cornering and improved handling overall. Changes include a larger front anti-roll bar, which gives both a crisper turning response and better ride quality. Sportier performance can be gained from Lexus’s Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS), a standard feature of the F Sport and Premier grade models. This automatically adjusts the damping force delivered by the shock absorbers at each wheel in response to the quality of the road surface and the driver’s inputs. For example, on rough roads, the system switches to a more compliant setting to maintain comfort. When driving through a bend, the damping

Celebrating 400 years of the Bard Shakespeare Festival comes to St Albans Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears…
N
ow is the winter of our discontent, but in the spring time (the only pretty ring time) OVO, the resident theatre company at the Maltings Arts Theatre, St Albans, will be commemorating the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death with a festival across the whole city. Some are born great, some achieve greatness, some have greatness thrust upon them and the greatest British playwright is someone worth celebrating! Lasting from March to July 2016, the festival will take in all of the bard’s work in some form, through a variety of artistic mediums, including choral singing, symphony music, poetry and, of course, a number of theatrical performances. Most of the work will be performed at the Maltings Arts Theatre but a number of venues across the city will be involved, as will a number of local groups, societies and schools. Though this be madness, yet there is method in’t! Opening the festival on March 11 will be the nationally renowned Propeller, the all-male professional Shakespeare company which seeks to find a more engaging way of expressing Shakespeare. Ovo itself will be presenting Hold off the Earth, an interpretation of Hamlet written by local author Stephen Cunningham, from March 29 to April 2; and As You Like It in May and June. This will be a new production involving music and which has also been invited to perform at the Minack Theatre in Cornwall in the summer. Other local companies involved include the Company of Ten, Ver poets, St Albans Folk Club, Brocket Consort and Trestle. The Festival has also attracted professional companies from London – Merely Theatre, Goat and Monkey and Pantaloons. On the actual anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth and death, 23 April, we will see a day in the city where various scenes from the 37 plays will be played out at local landmarks. Ovo’s Founder and Artistic Director, Adam Nichols quoth: “Our idea for a St Albans Shakespeare Festival came to us from an appreciation of the wide range of artistic talent there is in St Albans and to use this to commemorate the death of our greatest playwright seemed an ideal opportunity to strengthen the reputation of the City on the cultural map Ovo chair David Widdowson said: “We are absolutely delighted at the breadth and depth of talent we have attracted to the Festival. Alongside traditional performances there will be some very innovative
contributions and some which are audience interactive to make Shakespeare as accessible as possible. The Festival is strongly supported by St Albans District Council. Richard Shwe, Head of Community Services, said “We are proud to support this initiative by Ovo Theatre Company which has the potential to further establish the City’s strong cultural offering. The opportunity for local societies to perform alongside established professional companies and the breadth of artistic forms makes for a very exciting Festival.”

A
new start-up company designed to create an online property marketplace and provide an alternative to the traditional method of buying and selling houses through estate agents has been set up by two young North Londoners. Kamran Chaudhry and Haashim Rifai have set up EMOH which brings the whole process of buying and selling property together in one place. The service avoids the need to use an estate agent and is free to list. Rifai and Chaudhry, who have spent the last year developing EMOH, have created a platform that is both intuitive and simple to use enabling homeowners to easily upload their properties, manage viewings and sell their homes through the site without the need to involve an agent. They are also in the process of allowing rental properties to be uploaded and advertised to potential tenants. Rifai explains, “The traditional method of selling houses through high street based estate agents is archaic in the modern world, since 98% of people begin their search online before getting in touch with an estate agent. It is our opinion that there is no one better to sell a home than home owners themselves. “With estate agents fees ranging from 1%-2.5% around the country, the saving is not insignificant, especially in London where the average house price is now approaching £500,000, meaning that a home owner would be liable for fees of between £5,000 and £12,500 + Vat at 20% to move. EMOH guides the home owner through the sales process providing tips and advice on how best to market their property as well as offering an affordable range of optional services including professional house photography (£99), valuations (£19.95) and an EPC,
photos and floor plans for just £249 (plus vat) – the maximum outlay to facilitate the marketing and sales process. Rifai concludes, “With the arrival of the Internet, people booking a holiday now go directly to the provider and as a result travel agents have largely disappeared from our high streets. I think the same will happen to estate agents in the future. In fact, it is estimated that by 2020 almost half of residential property sales will be conducted online.”
Why did you start EMOH?
We felt that there was a need for a real alternative to using estate agents as a method of buying and selling homes. We believed that the large fees charged to pay for their services should be challenged as they can no longer be justified in this day and age. As almost all house searches start online it makes sense to use the Internet to complete the process. We also believe that the best person to sell your house is you, and hence we’ve created a platform to allow you to do so.
What makes EMOH different from online estate agents?
We’re an online marketplace which allows homeowners to advertise their properties, unlike Zoopla or Rightmove which only allow estate agents to list. We offer a platform that places the control in the hands of the buyers and sellers and puts them into contact directly. We do not charge any commission or listing fee and encourage buyers and sellers to take control of the whole process.
How does it work?
The platform is purposely built with simplicity in mind, from the registration process which can be done with your Facebook account, to the listing process which can be completed in ten easy steps. All you need are photos of the property, a floorplan and an EPC and your home will be published in minutes for free! If you do not have any recent or good photos, EPC or a floorplan we can arrange to provide them for you.
What does it actually cost?

DEVELOPMENT & ALUMNI RELATIONS At Merchant Taylors’ School

n the US, ‘Development’ is a well-understood term, and the idea of alumni staying in touch with their alma mater after leaving and, indeed, supporting the institution financially is an embedded culture. In the UK, universities and schools have been slow to catch on, but are now ploughing a similar furrow, albeit against a very different cultural backdrop. I came to Merchant Taylors’ School in 2011, having worked at the University of Birmingham and New College,

Oxford, in similar roles. Both institutions have established alumni relations and fundraising programmes. Merchant Taylors’ had launched a professional Development Office in 2008 and work began to build relationships with the school’s alumni who, in some cases, had heard little from the institution since leaving. Merchant Taylors’ has one of the oldest and most active old boy associations in the country – the Old Merchant Taylors’ Society (OMT Society). However, historically most of the Society’s membership stemmed from those pupils who went on to play sport for the Old Merchant Taylors after they left. The Society ran a programme of events, mainly social, to which the paying membership were invited. One of the main challenges for the school and the Development and Alumni Relations Office has been to track down and engage with the thousands of OMTs who didn’t play sport and didn’t take up membership of the OMT Society. Fortunately, unlike at many other similar institutions, the relationship between school and alumni association is very strong. This has meant that the OMT Society and the school can now pool their resources, expertise, and volunteers’ efforts, to build a programme for the benefit of all alumni whatever their interests now. Together we run a programme of events that is not purely sporting and social, but is also about helping current

and future generations of OMTs make their way in life – a truly valuable support network. One of our first joint ventures was to establish a series of networking events in a variety of professional fields. These provide opportunities for OMTs and parents of current pupils to come together for business networking evenings. At these events alumni make valuable business connections as well as catching up with old classmates or making new friends among the Merchant Taylors’ community. We also invite them to help current pupils by offering them careers advice and, where possible, work experience. A further way we assist with careers is through our online careers directory. This is a searchable directory of over 500 alumni in a variety of fields who are prepared to be contacted to offer their fellow OMTs advice on their careers. There have been a number of success stories of useful connections made, whether picking a career path, changing track, or simply going for a promotion. We do still offer a large number of purely social events – year-group reunions are popular and we offer all alumni the chance to come back to the school for a reunion at least every five years. For the younger OMTs, there is an informal event every year until they reach their five-year reunion. These provide them with the chance to catch up with their classmates, but also to meet fellow OMTs who may be a few years ahead of them and might help them. For many alumni, the thing that really appeals is the opportunity to catch up with their former teachers and
change an individual’s life by opening the doors of the school to them. Once here, we aim to offer every pupil an outstanding experience, their learning enhanced by the very best facilities. To this end we have just opened a state-of-theart Design Centre and already have plans for the next two major building projects. Of course, this is another area of focus for fundraising for the Development and Alumni Relations office. So while we are not yet at the level of a US College in

That said, I have heard many an OMT begin a conversation with the words “Hello, sir!” In addition to building our networks of OMTs, we also raise philanthropic funds to develop the school beyond its current means. The culture of philanthropy in UK education has a long way to go to catch the US, but people are now starting to see their school, college, or university as a worthy charitable object. For Merchant Taylors’, founded by philanthropy, this should perhaps not be a surprise. Nor should the fact that bursaries remain our highest fundraising priority, given that the 1561 statutes set out that half the places at the school should be for “poore mens sons” who were to be educated without fee. Today the school financially supports over 100 pupils. We are aiming to increase that number to 150 – the number (if not the proportion) supported in 1561. We also aim to increase the number of bursaries awarded at 100% or more of the fee – those for whom the bursary will be truly life-changing. We work closely with local state primary schools to identify boys who might thrive here, but would not necessarily even think of applying, and to encourage them to do so. It is an ambitious aim that will take a lot of hard work to achieve. There is no doubt that to be successful in our aim we will have to find a handful of individuals who can afford to do something truly extraordinary for the school. However, it is also true that every gift can make a difference and, collectively, many alumni and friends supporting through modest monthly donations can

Know the Signs W hen Diana first noticed her symptoms, she wasn’t overly concerned, but soon her symptoms changed and she became worried. She received the news from her GP that we all fear, she had cancer. Diana is keen to raise awareness of vulval cancer so more women know which symptoms to look out for. Here, Diana shares her story from her diagnosis to her treatment at Spire Harpenden. “The symptoms I had were that it was sore to urinate, it would sting, so I tried the normal creams available over the counter but none of them helped. A couple of months after I originally noticed the stinging I then had bleeding, this was extremely unusual for me as I’d had a hysterectomy so I knew it shouldn’t be happening. At this point I went to see my GP who examined me and arranged for a biopsy. I was told it was vulval cancer, a rare cancer and one that my doctor was unable to deal with, so I was referred to a specialist gynaecologist. During my appointment with my consultant he told me he would be performing a fairly dramatic procedure that he’d only ever performed three times before. He also said that it would give me an extra five years; I was very distressed by this as I’m only in my 50’s. I left feeling worried and not very confident in his ability, so decided to do my own research
Once I’d spoken with him I felt complete confidence that I’d found the right consultant online and came across Mr Alasdair Drake at Spire Harpenden Hospital. “Mr Drake was so nice, he is a very gentle man and having dealt with others he was so reassuring and confident. Once I’d spoken with him I felt complete confidence that I’d found the right consultant. He made an effort to explain everything to me and made sure I understood it properly. I came away from the appointment feeling better about the operation; I was more worried about the stoma bag I’d be left with than the cancer. Even now, after my surgery and many follow ups, I can ask Mr Drake anything and will get an open, honest answer. “The operation was carried out by Mr Drake, Gynaecologist and Mr Nick Reay-Jones, General Surgeon
who removed the cancerous tissue, sphincter and lymph nodes. Recovery was difficult as it was such a complicated procedure, my family played a huge part in my recovery and as there are no set visiting hours at Spire Harpenden they were able to stay as long as they wanted to with me. If they were off work they could come and spend hours and hours with me to keep me company. My family were a huge part of my recovery, I can’t stress enough how much they helped. “The nursing staff were fantastic at the hospital, Sarah on the wards is a lovely nurse, who not only attended to my clinical needs but took the time to chat to me and get to know me. Most important was my stoma nurse! She was amazing! She taught me to self-irrigate which means I no longer use the stoma bags and can enjoy swimming again. I attended the outpatient department for around five weeks after my surgery and Jane in outpatients was incredible, the care in that department was amazing and over that time we built up a lovely relationship. “Vulval cancer is ten times rarer than breast cancer and half as common as cervical cancer. Symptoms might include vulval itching, stinging, soreness, discharge or bleeding. Usually a rough raised lump or firm irregular ulcer will be visible. It is more common in women who have already been diagnosed with the long term vulval skin conditions VIN and lichen sclerosus that also cause itching and soreness. I am delighted for Diana with the results of the surgery that Mr Nick Reay-Jones helped me perform for her. This operation was more radical than she had been advised but also more focussed on the tumour to maximise the chance of cure and minimise other side effects and the disruption to her life. There has been no sign if the cancer returning and the surgery has left her with a very good functional result so that she can enjoy her life almost as if she hadn’t had the cancer.” – Mr Alasdair Drake, Consultant Gynaecologist

fter giving me a gorgeous smokyeye look, make-up artist Selina sets to work on my foundation. She smooths on a serum primer and moisturiser before applying the Airbase concealer with a small brush - it works like magic and quickly hides any sign of rosiness, especially around my nose. Airbase is applied with a spray gun that feels like a cold blow-dry on the skin, and the foundation has to be mixed for the perfect colour. For me, Selina
squeezes a blend of two shades into a small container at the top of the gun before turning the machine on. Holding the nozzle 6cm away from my skin, she works on one area at a time, starting from the cheek to chin, then eyes to forehead and temple, and lastly down the nose, before repeating the process. The silicone-based formula feels light and silky, and the second application gives me a little more coverage on problem areas. My skin really does look flawless! She finishes with a touch of bronzer and blusher, before
finally brushing on a finishing powder.” Verdict: 4 out of 5. Fantastic coverage and the make-up lasted well, but it did take over an hour to apply and I needed a couple of touch-ups later in the day. When choosing an outfit make sure that it is a colour that tones or contrasts with the bridesmaids and also suits you. It must be comfortable as you will be wearing it all day and it is a good idea to try sitting down in it. A dress with a jacket is popular as the jacket can be removed in the evening when things hot up. A hat should not be too
large. A down turned brim can leave a shadow on the face and don’t wear it on the back of the head. Hatinators are very popular at the moment, they come in all sizes and are a disc on a band that you put straight on. Fascinators are smaller and come on a band or comb. These can be ordered to match an outfit if there is nothing from the huge stock at Cream that is quite right. Shoes should again be comfortable and a matching bag is best bought at the same time. It is always hard to match one to the other. Cream has a large selection of bespoke shoes from Spain in different heel heights with matching bag. Recent Lloyds Bank research shows over 14 million people in the UK have undertaken major work on their current property, or plan to do so within the next year in order to improve or add value to their home.

In addition, growing families are looking into the feasibility of adding a conservatory or orangery onto their house to provide much needed extra high quality living space, be it a kitchen/diner, gym, home office, play room, dining room, extra or enlarged living room. Building a conservatory or hybrid orangery can be more aesthetically pleasing than a full blown brick built extension with a tiled or flat roof. Despite the changes to the Building Regulations that came into effect on 1st October 2010, and the new legal requirement that all UK

Building an extension that matches in, loft conversion and/or conservatory will add value to any home; whilst at the same time provide invaluable extra living space. These types of home improvement options done professionally to a high standard are far far less costly than the massive expense of moving house, especially when you take into legal fees, so is it no surprise that so many UK property owners decide to improve rather than move.

A fresh modern twist
Recently Herts Bifold Doors had a chance to contribute to an exciting project in Ware. The clients were adding a fresh, modern twist to their home and HBD provided the perfect products.
W
ith the broad range of products available from Herts Bifold Doors and parent company G&N Windows, there is a glazing solution for every home. In this case the Anthracite grey aluminium frames against the white Monocouch render, seamless aluminium cladding and glass balustrades look contemporary and clean. The idea being that the dark frame colour draws your eye through the glazing and to the view, more than you would find with conventional window colour. Not only can the frames be manufactured in grey aluminium, G&N Windows are also able to offer UPVC frame in Anthracite grey at great competitive costs. For this build, focused on the rear of the property Herts Bifold Doors supplied the bifold doors, gable frames, angled windows and casement windows. Together with the sales and surveying teams the clients were able to ensure the design, angle and configuration of every part of the glazing complimented the interior room plans. In the bedroom the large gable frame lets in a
tremendous amount of light opening up the view, the angled window beside the bifold doors in the bedroom is mirrored in the ensuite, here the smaller room looks spacious with all of the usual bathroom essentials and a fantastic egg shaped bath tub. The bedroom bifold doors neatly open onto a beautiful balcony with crystal clear glass balustrades and surrounded by the aluminium cladding. Downstairs in the kitchen and living room area the 6 pane Schuco bifold doors have been configured to open in the center as a french door would. The doors have a lead door just off centre for easy access to the garden, both sides of the doors then smoothly fold back to either side.
