Pre-nuptial agreements, otherwise known as prenups, offer a practical, transparent way to address finances before and during marriage, and outline what should happen if the relationship ends. B P Collins’ family team is here to guide you through the process, debunk common misconceptions and highlight why prenups can be valuable for peace of mind.
When to consider a nuptial agreement
It’s best to start the process as soon as you’ve decided to marry. Waiting until close to the wedding can add unnecessary pressure, and legally, agreements should be finalised at least one month before your big day or a post nuptial agreement (signed after the wedding) might also be needed. If you’re already married, you might decide a nuptial agreement is appropriate when receiving significant inheritance or gifted
assets, or to protect a business, especially if third parties are involved.
A nuptial agreement should be mutually agreed upon, not imposed by one partner. It aims to prevent costly, emotionally draining legal battles and provide reassurance to third parties, such as family members and business partners.
Common misconceptions
Despite their growing popularity, there are still misconceptions about nuptial agreements that are easily debunked.
• Myth 1: They’re only for the rich and famous Nuptial agreements are common among a wide range of people, not just the very wealthy. The agreement must be fair to both parties but if it leaves one partner unable to meet their basic needs, then it may be only partially upheld (if at all).
• Myth 2: They can’t be changed Nuptial agreements can be revised with both partners’ consent. The agreement can include a review clause to ensure fairness when significant life events occur that have not already been specifically planned for in the agreement, such as the birth of a child or unforeseen long-term unemployment due to chronic ill-health
• Myth 3: They show a lack of trust
A nuptial agreement can strengthen trust by encouraging an open discussion about financial expectations and future plans. It’s no different than creating a will or insurance policy and protecting both partners’ interests and helping to avoid future conflict.
• Myth 4: Prenups aren’t legally recognised
While nuptial agreements are not automatically legally binding in England and Wales, courts increasingly uphold them provided certain safeguards are met. For example, both parties should receive independent legal advice, there must be full financial disclosure, and the agreement must be entered into freely. If these conditions are satisfied and the terms are fair, a court is likely to give the agreement significant weight.
• Myth 5: They only protect one partner
A well-drafted nuptial agreement is designed to protect both parties, not just the wealthier individual. It can provide clarity around financial responsibilities, safeguard assets brought into the marriage, and ensure a fair outcome if the relationship ends. In many cases, it offers reassurance to both partners by setting clear expectations from the outset.
A failure to provide a full and frank disclosure may result in a pre-nuptial agreement being set aside.
This was confirmed in the recent case of Entwistle v Helliwell, where the wife fraudulently and knowingly only disclosed a quarter of her wealth when the parties signed a “drop-hands” prenup on their wedding day. The prenup also contained the standard declarations that both parties had provided each other with full and frank disclosure – on the wife’s part, this was plainly untrue.
At first instance, the judge rejected the idea that the wife’s dishonesty invalidated their prenup, reasoning that the husband knew she was very wealthy.
The husband appealed the decision and the Court of Appeal agreed with him. They found that her conscious decision not to disclose assets she knew about, despite wording in the prenup that she had provided full and frank disclosure, constituted a fraud that meant the prenup should be completely ignored. The husband’s financial claims were therefore reassessed as if there were no prenup.
The decision also stressed the importance of independent legal advice for both parties, to ensure they understand the terms and consequences of such agreements.
While a nuptial agreement doesn’t guarantee an outcome, it provides clarity on marital and non-marital assets and helps to define both partners’ needs in the event of a divorce. This can help foster a sense of security and understanding between you and your partner. Having these discussions early on can make it easier to resolve any issues amicably.
If you are considering a pre-nuptial agreement, it is essential to obtain specialist legal advice to ensure the agreement is both enforceable and a true reflection of your wishes and intentions. For further advice and information on nuptial agreements, please contact B P Collins’ family team at enquiries@bpcollins.co.uk or call 01753 889995.

23-24 MAY 2026

JOIN US FOR BOLD COMEDY ON STAGE AND SCREEN AS WELL AS LIVE DJING SESSIONS ACROSS THE

From 6th to 21st June, the local landscape is set to become as vibrant as the canvases it inspires. Bucks Art Weeks returns for 2026, marking its largest celebration of creativity for many years with over 300 venues opening their doors. For residents across the region, it offers a unique invitation to step beyond the gallery walls and into the private sanctuaries where art is born.
The beauty of the event lies in the diversity of the ‘trail’ experience. Depending on which venues you choose to visit, you can combine two very different, yet equally inspiring, encounters with the arts:
The Working Studio: See Where the Magic Happens
For those who love to understand the ‘how’ behind the ‘what,’ the working studios are a must-visit. These are the intimate spaces where the creative process is laid bare. Here, you can watch the magic happen firsthand - whether it’s the heat of a glassworking kiln, the rhythmic spin of a potter’s wheel, or the precision of a jeweller’s bench. Visitors have the rare chance to speak directly with the makers, see work in progress, and discuss the inspirations

behind the finished pieces. It’s an authentic, behind-the-scenes look at the dedication required to master a craft.
If you’re looking for a wider variety of styles in one location, the group shows offer a more traditional gallery experience. Often held in historic village halls, garden galleries, or community hubs, these exhibitions bring together multiple artists under one roof. You might find contemporary sculpture sitting alongside delicate textiles, or bold photography paired with fine jewellery. It’s a fantastic way to see a broad spectrum of Buckinghamshire’s talent in a single visit, making it an ideal choice for a varied day out.
By visiting artists and makers, you are doing more than just browsing; you are supporting the local creative economy. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or looking for an inspiring family afternoon, Bucks Art Weeks promises a summer of discovery.

Tucked away in the Buckinghamshire countryside lies one of Britain’s most fascinating heritage destinations, a place where quiet gardens and historic buildings conceal stories that changed the course of the modern world. Today, Bletchley Park has transformed from a top-secret wartime base into a vibrant museum and cultural attraction, offering visitors an experience that blends history, technology, and thoughtful leisure. For anyone seeking a meaningful day out with depth and atmosphere, it stands out as one of the UK’s most rewarding places to visit.
During the Second World War, Bletchley Park served as Britain’s principal codebreaking centre, where thousands of mathematicians, linguists, engineers and analysts worked in secrecy to decode enemy communications. Their efforts, including breakthroughs against the German Enigma cipher, are widely believed to have shortened the war and saved millions of lives.
Walking through the estate today, visitors quickly realise this is not a traditional museum filled only with static displays. Instead, the site invites you into the real spaces where history happened: restored huts, wartime offices and atmospheric exhibition rooms recreate the intensity and ingenuity of the era. The experience feels deeply personal, connecting visitors with the human stories behind extraordinary achievements.

One of Bletchley Park’s greatest strengths is its immersive storytelling. Interactive exhibits, multimedia guides and hands-on displays allow visitors to explore complex ideas, such as cryptography and early computing, in engaging, accessible ways. Families and first-time visitors alike can enjoy films, recreated rooms and collections that reveal how intelligence work operated behind the scenes.

Highlights include exhibitions dedicated to codebreaking machinery, intelligence operations and the pioneering technology that helped shape modern computing. Seeing replicas of machines like the Bombe or learning about early electronic computers makes the experience feel surprisingly contemporary; the innovations developed here underpin much of today’s digital world.
Rather than overwhelming visitors with technical detail, the museum balances information with storytelling, ensuring that every display feels approachable and relevant.
What makes Bletchley Park particularly appealing for lifestyle travellers is its atmosphere. Set within beautiful grounds surrounding a Victorian mansion, the estate encourages visitors to slow down and explore at their own pace. Tree-lined paths, open green spaces and quiet corners provide moments of calm reflection between exhibitions.
The site is intentionally designed as a full-day experience. Visitors can wander freely, revisit favourite exhibitions and enjoy outdoor areas that make the visit feel relaxed rather than rushed.
According to the official visitor information, guests can expect “a fun-filled full day out” with plenty of space and activities suitable for all ages.
Cafés and rest areas add to the lifestyle appeal, allowing guests to pause for coffee or lunch while absorbing the surroundings. The blend of intellectual discovery and leisurely exploration makes it ideal for couples, families or solo travellers seeking a thoughtful escape from busy city life.
Another reason Bletchley Park resonates so strongly is its focus on people. Around 75% of the wartime workforce were women, many of whose contributions remained unrecognised for decades. The exhibitions highlight their roles alongside famous figures such as Alan Turing, offering a broader and more inclusive understanding of history.

“Visitors leave not only informed but emotionally connected, a hallmark of truly memorable cultural destinations”

Personal stories, letters and oral histories transform abstract wartime achievements into relatable human experiences. Visitors leave not only informed but emotionally connected, a hallmark of truly memorable cultural destinations.
Whether you are passionate about history, fascinated by technology, or simply looking for an inspiring day trip, Bletchley Park caters to a wide range of interests. Interactive challenges and familyfriendly learning experiences ensure younger visitors remain engaged, while deeper historical context rewards those eager to learn more.
The annual-pass style admission also encourages return visits, allowing guests to explore new exhibitions and seasonal events throughout the year. This flexibility turns a single outing into an ongoing relationship with the site.
In an age dominated by fast entertainment and fleeting experiences, Bletchley Park offers something rarer: a destination that feels meaningful. It combines intellectual curiosity with peaceful surroundings, historical importance with modern presentation, and education with genuine enjoyment.
More than just a museum, it is a place where innovation, courage and collaboration come alive, reminding visitors that quiet ideas can change the world. For lifestyle travellers seeking inspiration alongside relaxation, Bletchley Park proves that the most memorable journeys are often those that connect us to stories larger than ourselves.

The atmosphere extends seamlessly across the gardens, where artisan food, drink and live music create a relaxed yet refined summer setting. It is as much a cultural gathering as it is a showcase — one that invites visitors to linger, explore and return.

With each passing year, Handmade Oxford continues to build on its success, strengthened by its partnership with Waterperry Gardens and supported by organisations such as the Ashmolean Museum, the Society of Designer Craftsmen and The House Directory, all recognising excellence and innovation across the show.

Aldwych Theatre, London. Book now at SinatraMusical.com. Performances begin 3 June

The Voice. The Scandal. The Greatest Comeback In Showbiz History.
New Year’s Eve, 1942. A skinny, 27-year-old Italian-American steps onto the stage of New York City’s Paramount Theatre - and everything changes. The screaming crowd, the swooning teenagers, the voice that seemed to reach right inside you and squeeze. In that one electric night, Frank Sinatra didn’t just perform. He became a legend.
Now, that extraordinary story is coming to the West End, and if you’ve ever loved a Sinatra song, this is the show you’ve been waiting for.
Sinatra The Musical arrives at London’s Aldwych Theatre this June, brought to life by a world-class creative team including two-time Tony Award-winner Joe DiPietro and Olivier Award-

winning director Kathleen Marshall. Together, they’ve crafted a musical that’s as emotionally gripping as it is gloriously entertaining.
At its heart, this is a love story - or rather, two of them. As Frank’s star blazes across America, his heart is torn between his loyal first wife Nancy (played by Phoebe Panaretos) and the smouldering Hollywood goddess Ava Gardner (Ana Villafañe). When scandal strikes and a hostile press turns on him, it looks like the dream might be over. What follows is the most thrilling comeback show business has ever seen.
Joel Harper-Jackson steps into those iconic shoes as Frank himself - and the music is everything you’d hope for. Over twenty timeless classics filling the stage, from That’s Life and One For My Baby to The Best Is Yet To Come and I’ve Got The World On A String.
You know every song. Now it’s time to discover the remarkable man behind them. sinatramusical.com

Sustainability is often associated with new materials and modern production methods, but antiques already sit firmly within this conversation. By their nature, they represent reuse. An object that has existed for decades, or even centuries, requires no new raw materials, no manufacturing, and no additional environmental cost to remain in use.
Many antique items were made with longevity in mind. Gold, silver and well-constructed mechanical pieces such as watches were designed to be repaired rather than replaced. This means they can continue to function long after their original use, often with only minimal intervention. In practical terms, this extends their lifespan far beyond most modern equivalents.
At The Antique Collective, items regularly come through the shop that have been stored away for long periods. Once assessed, many can be cleaned, repaired or simply reintroduced into use. Jewellery can be worn again, watches serviced, and silver returned to practical or decorative use. Even where an object is no longer complete, individual components can often support the restoration of other pieces.

This process reduces waste and keeps materials in circulation. It also preserves the work of the original maker, which is often overlooked in discussions around sustainability. Retaining and reusing existing objects avoids the need to produce new ones, and maintains a link to established methods of craftsmanship.
For those unsure about items they own, a proper assessment can help determine what can be reused, repaired or retained. In many cases, objects that appear redundant still have a clear and practical future.
Those interested in learning more - whether buying, selling, or simply understanding what they have - are always welcome to visit us in Chorleywood.
See you next month, Iris

May is an extremely busy time in the restaurant kitchen with so many new ingredients becoming available as the spring into summer season starts to kick in tender courgettes, and early broad beans, the first Jersey Royal potatoes, radishes, watercress, sorrel and mint are all coming into their own.
Towards the end of May and the beginning of June sees the fragrant mops of frothy white elderflowers stand proud amongst the new green foliage, adorning our hedgerows and fields. The elderflower is a very versatile plant for the home cook and professional alike. The flowers make an excellent flavoured cordial and later on
the unpicked berries turn a deep dark purple and are a popular favourite for homemade wine. Avoid picking the flowers from the roadside and are best picked on a hot sunny day when their heady perfume is at its maximum. I have returned to this classic posset recipe for this month, which allows the flavours to sing with each other, here with elderflower, lemon, and new season English strawberries. This recipe uses the flowers and can be made last minute or in advance to give you a delicious pudding which is quick, simple and above all tastes great, strawberries could also be replaced with raspberries and poached plump gooseberries when they come into season.
Ingredients
Serves 6
For the posset
• 5 good sized elderflower heads in full bloom, picked from the roadside, rinsed and main stalk removed
• 900 ml double cream
• 250 g caster sugar
• Juice & zest 3 lemons
For the strawberry compote
• 500 g English strawberries stalks removed
• 100 g icing sugar
• Lemon juice to taste
Method
1. Boil the cream and sugar together in a heavy bottom pan for 2 to 3 minutes
2. On the last minute add the lemon juice, zest and elderflowers, leave to infuse till cool
3. Pass mixture through a fine sieve pressing gently to release the flavours

Michael Cutler Consultant

Following his recent arrival at Blaser Mills Law, we sat down with Michael Cutler, a highly experienced Wills, Trusts and Probate specialist, to discuss his longstanding connection to the local area and his experience advising families across Berkshire and Buckinghamshire.
What is your connection to Marlow and the local community?
Marlow has been home for around 45 years, so I have very strong roots in the local area. My children attended local schools including Danesfield, Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School and John Hampden, and my grandchildren are now growing up here too.
Having lived and worked locally for so long, I have a real understanding of the people, families and businesses that make this area such a special place. Many of the clients I advise are local families who value trusted, long-term relationships with their advisers.
Building those relationships and supporting generations of families as they plan ahead is one of the most rewarding aspects of my work.
Tell us about your experience and areas of expertise?
I have specialised exclusively in private client law for more than 30 years, advising individuals and families across Berkshire and Buckinghamshire on Wills, trusts, estate planning and inheritance tax matters.
A key area of my work is the use of trusts as part of practical inheritance tax and estate planning. Many clients want to ensure their wealth is protected and passed on in the most effective way possible, but the options can often feel complex. My role is to make those choices clear and accessible, so clients can make informed decisions with confidence.
I believe private client advice should always be personal, straight forward and reassuring. These are often sensitive and important family matters, and clients should feel fully supported at every stage.
What type of clients do you typically work with?
Almost everyone benefits from having proper private client planning in place. I work with individuals, couples and families who want peace of mind that everything is structured correctly for the future, whether that involves Wills, Lasting Powers of Attorney or trust planning.
I also support clients with more complex estates, including business owners and those with inheritance tax exposure, pension death benefits, life insurance policies or other assets that require careful structuring. The aim is always to put the right arrangements in place to protect wealth and make things as straightforward as possible for the next generation.
What was your first impression of Blaser Mills?
Blaser Mills Law has an excellent reputation across the region, which I was already very aware of before joining. What stood out immediately was the combination of strong technical expertise and a genuinely approachable culture. There is a clear focus on building long-term client relationships and delivering practical, high-quality advice in a supportive environment, which very much aligns with my own approach.
Can you tell us something interesting about yourself?
Outside of work, I have been involved in target shooting for many years. I shoot competitively and have represented both England and Great Britain, including winning a Commonwealth medal.

Transparency in the Family Courts has been a hot topic. Through increased reporting of case law, the courts aim to improve public understanding of how family law works in practice, promoting confidence in the legal process while balancing the sensitive nature of family disputes.
From early 2025, journalists and accredited legal bloggers may report on public and private children proceedings across all courts in England and Wales. This follows nationwide expansion of the Family Reporting Pilot (FRP), previously limited to selected court areas. Reporting remains subject to strict rules on anonymity ensuring that children and families cannot be identified, but it does mean that decisions and judicial reasoning may be more visible than ever before.
Similarly, in financial remedy cases following divorce, the 2024 Transparency Reporting Pilot (TRP) has been rolling out. While anonymity is protected, the increased publication of judgments may concern those who value privacy around personal or commercial finances, not just those with a high or public profile or commercially sensitive business arrangements.

“Many couples are understandably cautious about the risk of publicity, even where anonymity and confidentiality applies”
It is important to remember that family proceedings remain governed by strict confidentiality rules. Breaching these - by sharing details improperly or attempting to identify parties - can amount to contempt of court, carrying serious consequences. For those seeking to maintain confidentiality, non-court dispute resolution options such as mediation, collaborative law, and arbitration can offer effective and private alternatives.
Many couples are understandably cautious about the risk of publicity, even where anonymity and confidentiality applies. Understanding your position is crucial. If you are uncertain about how transparency may affect your case, or how best to protect your interests, seeking timely advice from an experienced family law specialist can help you make informed and confident decisions.
If you would like to explore your options, we are here to help. We offer a free initial 45-minute consultation to help you understand your legal position and explore the best path forward. Get in touch today at beaconsfield@kjsmith.co.uk or call on 01494 629000 to book your free consultation.

When facing legal matters, whether personal or business-related, the guidance of a qualified solicitor can make all the difference.
A solicitor is a legal professional who provides advice, drafts documents, and represents clients in legal matters. While many may attempt to handle legal issues independently, there are several key advantages to hiring a solicitor.
Firstly, solicitors bring a wealth of legal knowledge and expertise. Laws can be complex and ever-changing, making it difficult for individuals without legal training to navigate them effectively. Solicitors are well-versed in relevant legislation, case law, and legal procedures, allowing them to offer accurate and reliable advice tailored to your situation. Their knowledge helps ensure that you don’t miss critical details that could jeopardise your case or legal standing.

“Solicitors
bring a wealth of legal knowledge and expertise. Laws can be complex and ever-changing, making it difficult for individuals without legal training to navigate them effectively”
Secondly, a solicitor can help you avoid costly mistakes. Legal errors, such as missing deadlines or failing to follow proper procedures, can have serious consequences, including the dismissal of a case or the loss of a legal right. With a solicitor’s assistance, you are more likely to meet all necessary legal requirements, helping you to avoid unnecessary expenses or setbacks in the future.
Moreover, solicitors have experience in negotiation and dispute resolution. Whether you are buying property, resolving a family matter, or engaged in business dealings, a solicitor can represent your interests and negotiate on your behalf. Their experience in handling negotiations can often result in more favourable outcomes, whether through settlement, mediation, or court proceedings.
Additionally, solicitors offer peace of mind. Legal matters can be stressful, and knowing that a professional is handling the situation reduces anxiety and ensures that you have the right guidance at every step. The ability to trust someone with the intricacies of your case allows you to focus on other important aspects of your life or business. In conclusion, using a solicitor offers numerous advantages, from expert legal advice to better negotiation outcomes and protection from costly errors. Their role is crucial in navigating the oftencomplicated legal landscape, making them an invaluable resource when legal matters arise.

– The finest schools in the UK –

What led you to Heatherton?
I studied Business at the University of Leeds, expecting to follow a corporate career. Instead, a volunteering placement in an inner-city primary school made me fall in love with working with children. Since then, I have taught and led across state, independent and international schools, as far as Brisbane and Dubai. Most recently, I led significant curriculum changes as Deputy Head of Rupert House School, and then I was ready for my next challenge.
What surprised you about Heatherton?
Before visiting the school, I had driven past and thought it seemed like a small, quiet place. On coming inside, I realised that it is completely the opposite: it is busy and vibrant and inspiring. There’s a buzz of academic curiosity and the girls are so involved in their own learning.
I was also surprised by how much genuine warmth and sense of community there is here. Every school has values that they stick up on a board or website; but at Heatherton, and in the wider Berkhamsted Schools group, I was pleasantly surprised by how everybody genuinely lives out our values each and every day.
Why a single-sex girls’ school?
I am a passionate believer in all-girls education, having been to an all-girls’ school myself. There can be benefits for some girls who feel freer to take risks, actively participate and be themselves in a single-sex environment.
What is your vision?
Heatherton’s strength lies in being a place where each girl is known, seen and encouraged to be brave in her learning, so it is important that this personal, nurturing ethos will remain at the centre of everything we do. My vision for the future is to review and sharpen our academic ambition, ensuring that every girl is stretched appropriately to prepare them for their next stage, whatever that may be.
“Another thing that has particularly struck me about Heatherton girls is their passion for reading. It is a joy to see that love of reading alive and well. ”

How do you prepare girls for life after Heatherton?
We are lucky to have so many strong senior school options around us in Amersham. Many of our families look ahead to grammar school entry and helping them to achieve this sits firmly within my academic vision. We focus on the core subjects alongside the soft skills required for achieving their academic ambition, such as strong study habits, resilience and independent thought.
It’s important to prepare the girls not only for assessments and future schools, but for the world that they’re growing up in. This means offering a broad STEM curriculum, continuing to build digital literacy in an age-appropriate way, and weaving critical thinking, collaboration and creativity through every subject.
What makes Heatherton pupils unique?
I love how the Heatherton environment creates girls who are intelligent and sparky and free to be themselves. We were recognised by ISI as having a significant strength in oracy and the girls are noticeably confident and articulate. Another thing that has particularly struck me about Heatherton girls is their passion for reading. It is a joy to see that love of reading alive and well.
What do you believe girls need most from a Prep School?
I believe strong relationships are key to everything. Girls, particularly at this formative stage in their development, need to have teachers and friends who build them up and help them to be confident, adventurous learners.
As a single-sex environment and a purposefully small school, I see how every girl feels safe and supported in her learning and personal development, growing at her own pace into a confident, capable individual.
How do you plan to build strong relationships with staff, pupils and parents?
I think it’s about accumulating little moments. This week, I showed up to cheer on girls doing Tough Mudder which definitely surprised them, and held an art competition to decorate my office, with the winners invited for hot chocolate and a chat. A month into the role, I think I know all the staff and girls by name, and some parents too.
When you’re not at Heatherton, where can you be found?
Outdoors! I have a cheeky labrador named Wellington who I love to walk by the river near where I live. I’ve also found a new appreciation for gardening and love to tend to nature.

Education today is about far more than academic results alone. While strong examination outcomes remain important, there is growing recognition that young people must also be equipped with the skills and mindset needed to thrive in an increasingly complex and fast-changing world. Preparing students for life beyond the classroom has become a central focus of modern education.
Critical thinking is one of the most valuable skills students can develop. In a digital age where information is abundant, the ability to analyse, question and evaluate ideas is essential. Encouraging curiosity and independent thought helps young people become confident decisionmakers, capable of navigating challenges both in further education and in their future careers
Equally important is creativity. Whether expressed through the arts, problem-solving or innovation, creativity allows students to approach situations with flexibility and imagination.
Education that values creative thinking alongside academic rigour fosters resilience and adaptability –qualities that are increasingly sought after in higher education and the workplace.

“Critical thinking is one of the most valuable skills students can develop. In a digital age where information is abundant, the ability to analyse, question and evaluate ideas is essential”
Communication and collaboration also play a vital role. Learning to articulate ideas clearly, listen to others and work effectively as part of a team prepares students for real-world environments. These skills are developed not only through classroom discussion, but also through group projects, extracurricular activities and community engagement.
Wellbeing has become another key consideration in education. Supporting emotional resilience, self-confidence and balance enables students to perform at their best academically while maintaining a healthy relationship with learning. Schools that prioritise wellbeing help young people develop coping strategies that will serve them long after formal education ends.
Finally, a broader perspective on global citizenship is essential, particularly in a diverse and international city like London. Exposure to different cultures, viewpoints and experiences encourages empathy, open-mindedness and a sense of responsibility beyond one’s immediate surroundings.
By combining academic excellence with personal development, modern education aims to nurture well-rounded individuals who are prepared not only for exams, but for life. In doing so, it empowers young people to step confidently into the future, ready to contribute positively to society and adapt to whatever challenges lie ahead.

From the Winter Olympics which kick-started the international sporting calendar, to the Rugby League World Cup in November, from the Women’s Six Nations in March, to the summer’s World Commonwealth Games, sportsmen and women of every discipline will be putting to the test years of commitment and challenge. How do they do it?
Harrow School has produced hundreds of professional sportsmen, including first-class cricketers, professional footballers and, for the past 15 years, at least one professional rugby player annually. This

includes British and Irish Lions and England captain Maro Itoje, Billy Vunipola, Andrew Christie, Henry Arundell, Sam Winters, Kepu Tuipulotu and Sam Crean.
The School’s Master-in-Charge of Rugby, James Melville, shares his insights into developing a successful sporting mindset.
How would you define a ‘successful sporting mindset’ in the context of Harrow?
Character is the most important attribute a child can develop. At Harrow, we encourage boys from their first days in Year 9 to display the School Values – Fellowship, Humility, Courage and Honour – through all we do on and off the pitch. Pride in the Shirt helps boys understand the legacy of who has come before them and the privilege they have of representing the traditions held within the School. We encourage them to always ask ‘why’. To challenge us as coaches and be

open to being coached. Winning is not the only goal, but it is a goal and we instil positive competition within the boys to thrive. Finally, Connection, Clarity and Confidence – always playing for each other, knowing your role and believing in yourself and others is vital to success.
The qualities children develop through exposure to sport and an inspirational coaching environment take them far beyond the sports field, from successful military careers to entrepreneurship. What qualities do you aim to develop in Harrovians through sport? Competence, Confidence, Character and Connection. We challenge ourselves to build resilience and confidence through wins and losses. We set clear standards of behaviour and expectations with clear ‘nonnegotiables’ around effort, energy and punctuality. We emphasise team identity and shared values, conduct training sessions that are purposeful and our coaches model good values and look to build strong relationships with the players as young men, not just as sportsmen.
Competitive sport isn’t for everyone. How do you encourage confidence and sustained participation across all ability levels?
For me, it’s based on a bottom-up and top-down strategy. All the Year 9s play rugby. As a year group, they start together, mix up and will all play their first competitive fixtures for Harrow on the rugby pitch together, building that initial shared bond and School identity. From the top, we promote and celebrate the success of our A teams, particularly in recent years with two trips for the whole School to Twickenham to support the U18s in the Continental Tyres Schools Cup National Final. By instilling an initial framework of playing together and having the finished article as a source of pride at the top of the School and beyond, the goal is to inspire boys across all years to play their part.
How do you teach boys to deal with both success and failure and what lessons can be learned from losing, setbacks or mistakes?
We aim to play the toughest fixtures we can, against the best schools and we don’t shy away from any competition – we learn from winning and losing as both happen in equal measure. The great quote is apt

“It was at Harrow that I developed the character, discipline, and drive for improvement that have stayed with me beyond the rugby pitch”
– England Captain Maro Itoje
here: sport doesn’t build character, it reveals it. We learn lots about ourselves and each other in that process of losing and how we respond to it – it reveals if we’ve trusted the process of what we’re doing or not. If we trust the process and the outcome does not come, we can be proud regardless.
Why do you believe sport plays such a vital role in character development at Harrow?
Sport is a living, breathing, walking, talking expression of all that is good about Harrovians and the values of Harrow. Diverse groups brought together to pursue a common goal bound by a shared identity of tradition and driven by relationships. Competition teaches composure, resilience, the ability to look after one another during hardship and the key principles of routine, discipline and self-control. It creates leaders, allows the shy to flourish and to give boys the best memories of connection and confidence.
How do the skills and attitudes developed through sport transfer into academic work, leadership, and everyday life?
Character is the biggest one. Understanding values and their application at a human level. Sport exposes you and makes you vulnerable and teaches empathy. Work ethic and consistent training patterns have clear crossover to academic study. Communication, leadership, decision-making under pressure, and responsibility and accountability, are all experienced by Harrovians on the sports pitch.

"All learners value highly the wellbeing team, whose members provide swift support and guidance"

The study, by the Sutton Trust education charity, shows that virtually every key profession is dominated by privately educated pupils grabbing the senior management/director positions

Their grip on power is most noticeable in the judiciary, where 74 per cent of leading judges (those in the High Court or Court of Appeal) were privately educated.
Figures in the report also show that one in three MPs (32 per cent) was privately educated –as were half the members of the Conservative Cabinet. Even in Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Cabinet, 13 per cent of members went to private school. Nationally, the figure is just 7 per cent.
The report, carried out by Dr Philip Kirby, goes on to show that 71 per cent of senior Army officers – two-star generals and above – went to private schools. Only 12 per cent attended comprehensives.
“The
higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools”
In medicine, 61 per cent of doctors were privately educated while 22 per cent went to selective state grammar schools and just 16 per cent to comprehensives. The list goes on – 48 per cent of civil servants were educated privately, 29 per cent went to selective grammar schools and 23 per cent to comprehensives.
The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools. And of those chief executives of FTSE 100 companies who were educated in the UK, 34 per cent were privately educated.
Nearly half the top actors – 42 per cent of Bafta Award winners – went to private schools, fuelling criticism that the profession is becoming more elitist.
“Our research shows that your chances of reaching the top in so many areas of British life are so much better if you went to an independent school,” said Sir Peter Lampl, the chairman of the Sutton Trust. “As well as academic achievement, an independent education tends to develop the essential skills such as confidence, articulacy and teamwork, which are vital to career success.

Whether you are a recent graduate or considering a career change, teacher training offers many opportunities. It’s a chance to work in a role that is genuinely fulfilling, making a real difference in the lives of young people. Astra SCITT offers school-based teacher training, with the added benefit of a university-backed PGCE. Training is based in local schools. Expert input includes an in-school mentor to guide and support you and subject specialists to enable you to develop your skills. In primary, secondary and special schools across Buckinghamshire there is a high demand for wellqualified graduates entering the teaching profession. Here’s what one of our trainees has to say.

Zara: secondary trainee teacher - Modern Languages Tell us a little about your journey to becoming a teacher…
I considered teaching after leaving university but wasn’t ready then. Instead, I had a career in advertising, working in creative agencies and developing advertising campaigns. After 15 years, it was time for a change - I missed my languages and I missed working with young people.
Why did you select Astra as your training provider?
The Professional Studies days being weekly and in person was a draw as well as the placement schools available. On the interview day, I felt Astra and my potential mentor would be great to train with and learn from.
What have been the highlights of your training?
Watching a class develop, script and record their own telenovelas (mini dramas) - they were asked to deliver drama, and they did! More generally, being able to help bring my subject to life for young learners.
What have been the challenges?
To begin with lesson planning does take a lot of time. I have a young family and the course involves a lot of work. But planning does gradually get faster and any time put in, helps you move forward.
Top advice for anyone considering teaching
Go and observe in a secondary or primary school. See what it is like in a classroom and get a feel for what is taught for your subject. It’s easy to organise through the Get Into Teaching website. Then apply to Astra!

Welcome to Haddenham Park Care Home and Retirement Apartments. A stunning, state-of-the-art care home with seamlessly blended luxury apartments and studios in the heart of Buckinghamshire. This is where exceptional care, elegant living, and a true sense of home come together.

There are shops, and then there are places. Stumper & Fielding - tucked into a handsome Victorian terrace on Portobello Road since 2010 - has always been the latter.
Born from one of London’s most storied streets, Stumper & Fielding is an independent British brand with a single boutique and a very clear point of view: that British heritage doesn’t belong under glass. It belongs on your back, worn with confidence, cut for the life you actually live.
What sets them apart is that they don’t just curate - they create. Stumper & Fielding’s signature menswear outerwear collection is designed and made by them, for them, proudly in London. In a world of fast fashion and clothing made oceans away, that’s a remarkable thing.
Each piece is conceived in-house and brought to life using the finest British fabrics - bespoke herringbone tweed woven in Yorkshire, waxed cotton made in Scotland, silk printed in Macclesfield - by craftspeople who still do things the old way. Tradition, yes. But never dusty.
The cuts are modern. The colours are bold where they need to be, refined where they should be. There’s a quiet wit running through everything -a touch of eccentric British character that stops the collection from ever feeling like a costume, and makes it feel entirely, unmistakably, like now.
Step inside the boutique and you’ll find

something increasingly rare in London retail: a genuinely personal experience. The kind where someone actually knows the stock, listens to what you’re looking for, and helps you find it - without fuss, without pressure, and usually with a good story or two along the way. Shopping for clothes should feel like this.
Considered. Enjoyable. Human.
For those who can’t make the journey to Notting Hill (107 Portobello Road) - though it is, frankly, worth the trip - the core collection is available online at stumperfielding.com

Are you sitting comfortably?
If not, Back In Action can help
How much is it worth to lose your back pain?
That’s an intriguing question, isn’t it?
Many would pay a small fortune if they knew for certain that a solution would finally work. According to ergonomic experts at Back In Action, over 80% of their clients experience youthful movement again, with less pain, enabling them to continue with work and enjoy their favourite sports.
Over 80% is quite a claim, but customers have voted them Number One in the UK for four consecutive years. As a family business, they take immense pride in this achievement. If you suffer from back pain, it’s time to visit their website or one of their stores.
Founder David Newbound notes that many clients arrive at Back In Action having lost hope of permanent relief.

Carefully chosen and high-quality kneeling chairs can help alleviate back pain
“Most pain can be fixed by rest and skilled treatment,” David explains. “However, we often see clients who have been referred by practitioners when progress has stalled. They may have tried various treatments, painkillers, and even switched mattresses, yet they still suffer pain and feel increasingly demoralised.”
Spend a little, gain a lot?

Many clients find themselves surprised by the aesthetic appeal of Back In Action’s showrooms, resembling design-led furniture stores. This is intentional: Back In Action sources designs that are both functional and beautiful. They believe that furniture should enhance any home or office without compromising style.
Where do the health benefits come from?
With a name like Back In Action, it’s no surprise they emphasise movement—getting your spine moving and getting you and your back back into action. The health benefits stem from promoting movement that keeps blood circulating, even while sitting. This can lead to a positive feedback loop of decreased pain and increased activity.
A solution for everyone
Think your spine is beyond help? Back In Action has developed an innovative method to rejuvenate spinal movement: The Mobiliser. It has gained MOD medical approval and received accolades from thousands who claim it has transformed their lives. A test session is free, and they offer “Spine Reset Packages” for home that are affordable for most people.

At The Orthodontic Specialist, early intervention orthodontics is designed to identify and treat developing dental and jaw concerns before they become more complex later in life. Also known as early interceptive orthodontics, this approach focuses on guiding proper facial growth, improving function, and creating healthier long-term outcomes for children. The clinic believes that orthodontics is “not all about teeth.” Their holistic philosophy looks

“Early treatment may be recommended if your child shows signs such as mouth breathing, tongue thrust, thumb sucking habits, speech concerns, large overjets, crossbites, underbites, crowding, spacing issues, or delayed tooth eruption”
at important factors such as growth, function, breathing, tongue position, and tooth eruption to create comprehensive treatment plans that support a child’s overall wellbeing.
Early treatment may be recommended if your child shows signs such as mouth breathing, tongue thrust, thumb sucking habits, speech concerns, large overjets, crossbites, underbites, crowding, spacing issues, or delayed tooth eruption. These concerns may seem minor at first, but when left untreated, they can lead to more significant orthodontic problems in the future.
At The Orthodontic Specialist, treatment often involves straightforward fixed or removable appliances that help guide jaw development and improve bite alignment. The practice also offers advanced options such as palatal expansion, which can help widen the upper jaw, create space for erupting teeth, support better nasal breathing, and reduce the need for invasive treatment later on. The clinic highlights that 60–80% of facial growth is completed by age 10, which is why early treatment can be so effective.
Led by Dr Steffen Decker, the team has extensive experience treating children from as young as four years old. Their focus on prevention, minimal intervention, and state-ofthe-art technology helps families feel confident they are receiving expert care.
By addressing orthodontic concerns early, parents can help their children achieve healthier smiles, improved function, and better long-term dental health.

Moving home is often seen as a cost, but for many people in later life, the right move can actually save money. At Castle View, homeowner Ann is a good example of how that works in practice.
In their traditional family house, Ann and her husband Richard were spending more and more on energy. Older properties are often draughty, hard to heat and full of rooms you rarely use but still pay to keep warm. Since moving to their apartment at Castle View, their bills have dropped by over a third. That kind of saving makes a real difference to how relaxed you feel about everyday life.
The change is largely down to the way the apartments are built. They are well insulated, with tripleglazed windows and plenty of natural light. Ann talks about only needing the heating on for a short time, even in colder months, because the warmth stays in the apartment. Instead of constantly topping up the heat, the space holds a comfortable temperature with far less effort.

This has an important impact on daily routines. You can turn the heating on when you need it, without worrying what it will do to the next bill. You can enjoy a bright, warm home without shutting off rooms or huddling in one space to keep costs down. For many people, especially on a fixed income, that sense of ease is as valuable as the savings themselves.
There are also running costs you may not consider at first. In a modern apartment, there is no roof to fix, no gutters to clear, no sudden major repairs to fund. This means fewer surprises and less time and money spent on maintenance.
Shared spaces play their part too. With a bistro, library and rooftop lounge on site, there are warm, welcoming places to spend time without heating your own apartment all day. Meeting a friend or joining an event becomes part of normal life, without paying to keep every room at home warm while you are out.
Ann’s experience shows that a move is not just about a different postcode. Done thoughtfully, it can help bring monthly outgoings under control, reduce the hidden costs of an older home and offer a more comfortable, sociable way of living at the same time.

Could you become maintenance-free and save money too?
There are many practical and emotional benefits to be enjoyed by moving to an Integrated Retirement Community, like Castle View, Windsor. Downsizing to our well-insulated 2-bed apartments (77% the size of a typical 3-bed house*), will save you money and release equity.

– Keep it local for everything house and home –

If the living room is considered the heart of the home, then surely the bedroom is the mind — tailored to your most intimate needs and personal style. While most rooms serve the entire household, this one is just for you. Anatomical analogies aside, it’s one of our firm beliefs that the bedroom deserves a near-cellular (last one, I promise) level of attention. Beyond personal aesthetics, it is also likely the most healthoriented room you occupy; your space to rest, relax, and repair is of paramount importance to your life, both inside and beyond your home. While it’s all well and good to encourage you to follow your personal passions, some styles are so timeless that we find ourselves returning to them again and again. With that in mind, we’ve pieced together a selection of ideas to inspire you— whether you’re a curator of mid-century design or prefer a contemporary zen. Here are five ways to build the modern bedroom.
Let’s start with something that reaches further back on the design timeline than the rest. Defined by its richly detailed interiors from ornate furniture to wall panelling and floor-to-ceiling bookcases, the Georgian look is steeped in grandeur. And if you happen to have a four-poster bed lying around, you’re already well on your way to turning your future bedroom into a refined nod to the past. Heritage brands have drawn on this aesthetic for decades, using it as a marker of opulence and a tribute to the early forefathers of modern design. Putting a contemporary spin on this age-old style, you see, is much easier than you might think. The 1700s were, if nothing else, somewhat synonymous with vanity. People took immense pride in their appearance, and with that demand came a solution: the vanity table. On the flip side, however, as the world became increasingly globalised, another piece of furniture—one that, ironically, divided—began to gain popularity. Room dividers offered an added sense of privacy, even within the most intimate settings.
A little further along in the history of the home—but a history lesson all the same. Midcentury design (the 20th, for those keeping

It’s a melting pot of rich woods, bold colours, and functional furniture, an aesthetic that has resurfaced time and again since it first graced our homes some 70 years ago.
If you want your sleep space to channel this trend, our recommendation is to build from the ground up—literally. Start with a statement midcentury rug, then choose a bed with the largest, most practically designed headboard you can find. The look can be finished with one of the era’s many iconic lounge chairs for good measure - look to names like Vitra or Knoll for inspiration - the result is the perfect cocktail of retro and modern.
As previously mentioned, no room is more yours than the bedroom, so bold statements of self-expression are almost the default when it comes to your chambre à coucher. But what about those of you who want to ensure your space has no quiet characters? Try a statement mirror that reflects your personality as much as your outfits, a bed worthy of your dreams, and wallpaper from LondonArt bold enough to breathe new life into the phrase, “if these walls could talk.”
As always with the eclectic look, the core concept revolves entirely around placing the unique memories and ideas that define you, wherever you choose. It’s about hitting the unmute button on your design story and embracing the beauty of organised chaos. The pieces above serve as a guide, a starting point for building a more daring, expressive aesthetic.
Life can ask a lot of us. Which is why some of us crave a space where responsibilities fade, and the visual bombardment of city life disappears with them. A place where the overhead light is used for no more than the five seconds it takes to find the switch for your lamps. A bedroom designed with this mindset can be uniquely beneficial, its calming nature offering a space to close your eyes, before you close your eyes.
To achieve this deeply relaxing breath of fresh air, follow the minimalist mantra of “less is more,” both in quantity and colour palette. Opt for softly-shaded wooden side tables from Audo Copenhagen, pair them with quietly luxurious lamps from Nuura, and gently layer the space around a welcoming bed.
Sleep has become its own health culture in recent years, a shift only amplified by the meteoric rise of technology. We track our rest through apps, invest in mattresses that memorise our sleeping positions, and increasingly these innovations are reflected in the furniture we use across the modern bedroom. So what’s on offer to help you make the leap into the future as you fall into bed?
You’ll find this approach integrated into Lema’s fitted furniture range, with its wardrobe sanitising systems, Clei’s award-winning multi-functional furniture solutions, and, of course, the precision engineering behind Interlübke’s exceptional storage options. This is less about aesthetics and more about modernising the way you use one of the most health-centric rooms in the home. chaplins.co.uk

“Engaging

With AI offering instant design inspiration and price comparison sites making costs more visible than ever, it’s easy to question whether there is even a need for interior designers in today’s market. But is that really the case?
We asked Hilary Taylor of Tactile Interiors a Hertfordshire-based design studio working across London and the Home Counties.
“It is always beneficial to seek professional interior advice when embarking on any project, even a small one—particularly with commercially driven developments, where early design decisions can have a lasting impact on the overall scheme.”
Good design starts long before colours and curtains. It starts with understanding what is needed from a space. From furniture scale and circulation to natural light, storage and the allimportant proportion, one well-informed decision early on can prevent expensive mistakes and even
corrective purchases later.
Designers don’t just bring ideas—they bring access.’ Says Hilary Taylor. She explains that professional designers build relationships with suppliers across every part of the home-from high street retailers to artisan upholsterers, fabric houses and specialist trade only manufacturers.
She went on to say that ‘design-led thinking is often most effective at the earliest stages of a project, when spatial planning and key decisions about layout and flow are still being formed. In practice, this can mean upgrading the finish, elevating the detail, and ultimately increasing the perceived value of the overall scheme without spending more than originally intended.’
Scrolling endless online catalogues, searching for Goldilocks pieces across a whole home quickly becomes overwhelming and unrealistic. Designers do that work for you—so you don’t have to. And importantly, working with a designer

Beautiful window treatments do far more than simply dress a window. From sheer voiles and elegant drapery, to blinds and shutters, they can bring privacy, elegance and architectural balance to a room—often becoming one of the most accessible ways to experience the value of working with an interior designer
Curious about what’s possible in your own home?
Tactile Interiors is offering readers an exclusive complimentary design consultation and, as an introduction to working with us, an elegant, privacy, voile curtain with any reception room curtain order placed before 30 September 2026.
To arrange your consultation, email hilary. taylor@tactileinteriors.co.uk — we’d be delighted to help.

doesn’t remove your access to great retail finds, online discoveries, or even sale pieces you may have spotted. If it works within the overall scheme, it can absolutely be incorporated.
By using a Designer you’re not reducing your options—you’re expanding them.
Forward-thinking design studios are already abreast of AI and its’ benefits, so by working with a professional designer, in terms of interiors you won’t need to be. Enjoy the best of both worlds: technology where it adds value, and human experience where judgement, instinct, and realworld understanding matter most.
Hilary explained that by engaging an interior designer, you don’t have to commit to a full scheme. Consultancy support can be used on a flexible basis, offering a more accessible way to benefit from professional input while maintaining clarity over scope and cost.”
So, in returning to the original question, now do you consider engaging an Interior Designer to be an unnecessary cost, True or False?
Great design doesn’t necessarily mean spending more… but it certainly delivers better outcomes!
“Designers don’t just bring ideas – they bring access”

In the most refined gardens, innovation is never intrusive—it is seamlessly integrated, quietly enhancing both beauty and performance. With this philosophy at its core, Claber unveils the MyAquaSystem, a sophisticated new chapter in garden care: an advanced underground irrigation system designed for discerning homeowners who expect more from their outdoor space.
Installed discreetly beneath the surface, this elegant solution keeps your lawns, borders, and vegetable gardens looking natural while delivering precise, consistent watering exactly where it is needed. At the centre of this elevated experience lies a fully connected ecosystem. The control unit, programmable solenoid valve and the iconic Hydro-4 have been reimagined with integrated Bluetooth® technology, allowing each element to communicate effortlessly. The result is a system that feels intuitive, responsive and entirely in

tune with the rhythms of your garden.
Control, quite simply, becomes second nature. With myClaber, you can manage every aspect of your irrigation from your Android or iOS smartphone.
