How to avoid probate pitfalls
P
robate can be a difficult process, especially when you are dealing with the death of someone close to you. In England and Wales, probate involves identifying the deceased’s assets, paying debts and taxes and distributing the estate to the correct beneficiaries. While some estates are straightforward, mistakes can cause delays, disputes, and financial risk for executors. B P Collins’ private client team explores the following steps that can help you avoid common probate pitfalls.
Check whether probate is needed Probate is not always required. If assets were jointly owned, they may pass automatically to the surviving owner. Some banks and financial institutions may also release smaller balances without a Grant of Probate. Before applying, contact each organisation holding assets to check its requirements. This can save time and avoid unnecessary paperwork.
Find the latest valid will A key early step is locating the most recent valid will. Do not assume that the first will found is the final version. Check with family members, solicitors, banks, and will storage services. If the wrong will is used, the estate may be distributed incorrectly, which could lead to disputes. If there is no valid will, the estate must be dealt with under the intestacy rules. Value the estate properly Accurate estate valuation is essential. Executors should identify all assets, including property, bank accounts, investments, vehicles, pensions, jewellery, and personal possessions. They should also list debts, funeral costs, mortgages, loans, and household bills. Property and valuable items may need professional valuations. Incorrect valuations can affect inheritance tax calculations and delay the probate application. Understand inheritance tax Inheritance tax can be one of the most complex parts of probate and will usually require the advice of a probate solicitor. Even where no tax is payable, the estate may still need to be reported correctly. Executors should check available allowances, exemptions, gifts made before death, and whether the residence nil-rate band applies. Missing deadlines or giving inaccurate information to HMRC can lead to penalties, interest, or delays. Keep retailed records Executors should keep clear records of all money coming in and going out of the estate. This includes asset sales, debt payments, tax payments, professional fees, and distributions to beneficiaries. Keeping a separate executor account can make this easier. Good records help protect the executor if beneficiaries ask questions or if HMRC requires further information. Do not distribute too early It can be tempting to distribute money quickly, especially if beneficiaries are waiting. However, executors should not distribute the estate before debts, taxes, and possible claims have been dealt with. If money is paid out too soon and a creditor or claimant later appears, the executor may be personally liable. Consider placing statutory notices to protect against unknown creditors.
Communicate with beneficiaries Poor communication is a common cause of probate disputes. Beneficiaries may become frustrated if they do not understand why the process is taking time. Executors should provide sensible updates, explain delays, and avoid making promises about payment dates before the estate position is clear. Seek expert advice Professional advice is useful where there are disputes, foreign assets, business interests, trusts, missing beneficiaries, unclear wills, or significant tax issues. Getting advice early can prevent costly mistakes later. Probate requires care, patience, and organisation. By checking the will, valuing the estate accurately, dealing with tax properly, keeping records, and communicating clearly, executors can reduce the risk of delays and disputes while ensuring the estate is administered correctly. here are few places in Britain where history, nature and timeless elegance come together as effortlessly as Woburn Abbey and Gardens. Set within the heart of the Bedfordshire countryside, this remarkable estate offers visitors an unforgettable experience, blending centuries of heritage with beautifully designed landscapes. Whether you’re passionate about historic houses, love spending time outdoors or simply enjoy discovering hidden gems, Woburn Abbey is a destination that rewards every visit. Home to the Russell family since 1547, Woburn Abbey has been lovingly cared for across generations. The estate reflects more than four centuries of history, with each generation leaving its own mark on the magnificent house and surrounding grounds. Today, following an extensive restoration project, the Abbey is preparing to welcome visitors once again, ensuring its extraordinary collections, architecture and gardens can be enjoyed for many years to come. Coins are one of the most common items people bring into the shop, usually tucked away in an old biscuit tin, a drawer, or an album that hasn’t been opened for years. They’re often inherited, sometimes collected, and almost always come with the same question: “Are these worth anything?” The answer is often more interesting than people expect. While age can play a part, it’s rarely the only thing that determines value. We look at factors such as rarity, condition, the metal a coin is struck in, its date, mint mark and, in some
cases, small variations or minting errors that can make one coin far more desirable than another. Divorce, separation and financial remedy proceedings are often complex and emotionally draining. They can be fraught with accusations by each person of the other, which can lead to dialogue becoming more contentious than it needs to be. Family lawyers are often asked the question, ‘does my partner’s behaviour matter?’ Behaviour (more formally known as ‘conduct’) in financial remedy proceedings is a complicated area of family law. While a former partner’s behaviour may have soured the relationship between parties even further, it is not always considered by a court in financial remedy proceedings Set across our three vibrant sites in Maidenhead, Claires Court is an all-through independent school built around strong values. Our renowned ‘Diamond Model’ of education provides a tailored blend of academic focus and social growth. Boys and girls start their journey co-educationally in Nursery and Juniors, separate into single-sex environments for their crucial Senior School years and come back together for a coeducational Sixth Form.

and surrounding grounds. Today, following an extensive restoration project, the Abbey is preparing to welcome visitors once again, ensuring its extraordinary collections, architecture and gardens can be enjoyed for many years to come. One of Woburn’s greatest attractions is its stunning gardens. Far more than a collection of flowerbeds, they are a masterpiece of landscape design. Visitors can wander through carefully restored ornamental gardens inspired by the celebrated landscape designer Humphry Repton, whose vision helped shape the estate in the early nineteenth century. Every path reveals something new, from elegant terraces and colourful borders to tranquil lakes and hidden architectural features. Among the highlights are the charming Chinese Dairy, the striking Pagoda-topped Rockery and the enchanting Folly. These unique features create a sense of discovery around every corner, making the gardens just as appealing to families as they are to keen gardeners and photographers. Seasonal planting ensures there’s always something different to admire, whether it’s vibrant spring blossoms, lush summer displays or rich autumn colours. Beyond the formal gardens lies the magnificent Deer Park, one of the estate’s most iconic features. Home to nine species of deer roaming
across sweeping parkland, it offers visitors a rare opportunity to experience wildlife in a peaceful and picturesque setting. The open landscapes provide wonderful walking opportunities and countless chances to pause and appreciate the natural beauty that surrounds the Abbey. History enthusiasts will also find plenty to admire. Woburn Abbey has evolved over hundreds of years, incorporating architectural influences from several notable designers while preserving its rich heritage. Inside, visitors can expect beautifully restored State Rooms, priceless works of art, historic tapestries and carefully conserved interiors that tell the story of one of Britain’s great country houses. Years of specialist craftsmanship have gone into restoring the building, from repairing intricate stonework to weaving new silk wall coverings using traditional techniques. What makes Woburn Abbey especially appealing is that it never feels like a museum frozen in time. Instead, it remains a living estate where conservation, history and modern visitor experiences exist side by side. Ongoing restoration of both the Abbey and its gardens reflects a genuine commitment to preserving this national treasure while making it accessible for future generations. The estate also offers the simple pleasure of slowing down. It’s the sort of place where visitors can spend hours wandering through peaceful gardens, enjoying a leisurely lunch, taking photographs of spectacular scenery or

simply sitting quietly beneath centuries-old trees. Unlike many busy tourist attractions, Woburn encourages visitors to savour the experience rather than rush from one highlight to the next. For couples seeking a romantic day out, families looking for an educational adventure or anyone wanting to escape into nature, Woburn Abbey and Gardens delivers something special. Every visit offers a balance of culture, tranquillity and discovery, creating memories that linger long after you’ve returned home. As the restoration project reaches its exciting conclusion, there has never been a better time to plan a visit. Woburn Abbey and Gardens stands as a shining example of Britain’s rich heritage, where magnificent architecture, beautifully restored landscapes and centuries of fascinating history combine to create one truly exceptional destination. If you’re searching for an inspiring day out that captures the very best of the English countryside, Woburn Abbey deserves a place at the top of your travel list. www.woburnabbey.co.uk

They’re often inherited, sometimes collected, and almost always come with the same question: “Are these worth anything?” The answer is often more interesting than people expect. While age can play a part, it’s rarely the only thing that determines value. We look at factors such as rarity, condition, the metal a coin is struck in, its date, mint mark and, in some cases, small variations or minting errors that can make one coin far more desirable than another. Gold sovereigns are a good example. Many people assume they’re simply worth their weight in gold, but certain dates or levels of preservation can make them particularly desirable to collectors. The same is true of many silver coins, where collector interest can sometimes outweigh the value of the precious metal itself. One piece of advice we always give is to resist the temptation to clean old coins. It might seem like the obvious thing to do, but cleaning can remove the original surface and will significantly reduce collector appeal. A coin is always best left exactly as it was found. At The Antique Collective, we regularly assess everything from single sovereigns to collections built over a lifetime. Whether you’ve inherited a small box of coins or simply found a few old pieces while clearing a drawer, it’s always worth having them looked at properly. You might discover they’re simply an interesting reminder of the past. Equally, you may be holding something far rarer than you realise. Either way, we’d be delighted to welcome you into the shop to share our knowledge and help uncover the story behind your collection.

How do you choose a good Estate Agent?
T
here’s no point in denying it; Estate Agents do not enjoy a very high reputation. And with buying and selling property rated to be one of the most stressful life-events there is, it would be good to know that the one you entrust with the sale of your most valuable asset is someone you can really trust. So what makes a good estate agent? And how can you be sure you’ve found one? At Humberts, we’ve learned a few things over the last 200 years, and so here are a few pointers. Most people begin by inviting the agent to visit their home and provide a Valuation. But beware those who recom-mend a high asking price just to win your business, only to push you to reduce the price a few weeks later when your property fails to attract any interest (and they are impatient to earn their fee). That sends out all the wrong messages to buyers; it suggests you are desperate to sell, or that you or your agent, are unsure of your property’s true value. But if your home is one-of-a-kind, perhaps a period property, it will be harder to say what that value really is. Humberts specialise in Period and Character homes, and we under-stand what makes them special. More importantly, we know how to communicate that to your buyer. What happens once you put your house on the market? Does the person who valued your home
3 0 J U LY 2 0 2 6
also conduct the viewings, or will they delegate that to a junior staff mem-ber? Who negotiates the offers? Is it the person who showed the buyer round – who might only be a weekend viewing assistant - or someone else who hasn’t actually met them? Who will be your point of contact throughout – and who is the contact for your buyer? Lastly, who will watch over the sometimes prolonged and frequently very stressful process of the sale itself ? Is it the person you and your buyer already know and trust, or a ‘sales progressor’ appointed by the agents. At Humberts, all our viewings are conducted by a director of the firm, and we never use viewing assistants. And that same person negotiates each offer and sees the sale through to completion. That’s why we achieve some of the highest prices at sale among any agents in the region. We are patient, and we know how to highlight the features that have real monetary value to your home. And by building trust between Buyer and Seller, we also have fewer fall-throughs. So, if you are thinking of selling your home, do get in touch. Humberts operate all across Oxfordshire and neighbouring counties, and we offer a level of personal service you won’t find anywhere else. Our results speak for themselves.

Why more people in their 30s and 40s are making Wills M any people assume making a Will is something to think about later in life. In reality, more people in their 30s and 40s are recognising the importance of having one in place. Major life events often happen during this stage of life, and a Will helps ensure your wishes are clear should the unexpected happen.
Buying a home For many people, purchasing a property is one of their biggest financial commitments. In certain circumstances, a Will can detail who should inherit your share of your home and can help avoid uncertainty for those you leave behind. This is particularly important if you own property with someone else or have contributed different amounts towards its purchase. Starting a family Having children is one of the most common reasons people decide to make a Will. It allows parents to appoint guardians to care for their children if both parents were to die before they reach adulthood. Without a Will, the decision about who cares for your children could ultimately be made by the court. Protecting unmarried couples Many couples live together without getting married or entering into a civil partnership. However, unlike spouses and civil partners, cohabiting partners do not automatically inherit from each other’s estate. 3 4 J U LY 2 0 2 6

A Will allows you to provide for your partner and helps ensure your wishes are followed. Planning for growing wealth As careers progress, many people begin to build savings, investments, pensions or business interests. A Will allows you to decide how these assets should be distributed and can form part of wider estate planning. Reviewing your Will as your financial circumstances change helps ensure it continues to reflect your wishes. Providing clarity for loved ones Making a Will is not only about deciding who inherits your estate. It also lets you decide who should deal with the administration and who should look after any funds being left to children. It also provides clear instructions for your executors, helping them administer your estate with confidence and reducing uncertainty for your family during an already difficult time. ‘Bad Behaviour’ in Divorce Proceedings – When Does It Matter?
D
ivorce, separation and financial remedy proceedings are often complex and emotionally draining. While a former partner’s behaviour may have soured the relationship between parties even further, it is not always considered by a court in financial remedy proceedings. When might a person’s conduct be considered by a court? The law moved away from a ‘fault-based’ (or blame-based) divorce system in 2022. Today, courts are sometimes reluctant to allocate blame unless it has had a direct impact on the parties’ financial matters or where the conduct would be ‘’inequitable to disregard’. Family lawyers do often see examples of conduct which the courts may consider. Where a former

partner consistently refuses to comply with court deadlines, to correspond with the court or refuses to negotiate - these can be examples of conduct which may be considered by the court. Generally, the conduct by the other person must have had a direct impact on the parties’ financial matters on divorce to be considered.

How We Can Help If a court finds that there has been bad behaviour or poor litigation conduct by one person, there are several ways in which the court will deal with this, including imposing costs penalties on the offending party. Early legal guidance helps identify the ways to remedy poor litigation conduct. By engaging family lawyers at an early stage, you gain clarity on process, control over costs, and confidence that your financial future is being carefully protected. Preparing Young People for Life Beyond the Classroom
E
ducation today is about far more than academic results alone. While strong examination outcomes remain important, there is growing recognition that young people must also be equipped with the skills and mindset needed to thrive in an increasingly complex and fast-changing world. Preparing students for life beyond the classroom has become a central focus of modern education. Critical thinking is one of the most valuable skills students can develop. In a digital age where information is abundant, the ability to analyse, question and evaluate ideas is essential. Encouraging curiosity and independent thought helps young people become confident decisionmakers, capable of navigating challenges both in further education and in their future careers Equally important is creativity. Whether expressed through the arts, problem-solving or innovation, creativity allows students to approach situations with flexibility and imagination. Education that values creative thinking alongside academic rigour fosters resilience and adaptability – qualities that are increasingly sought after in higher education and the workplace.

“Critical thinking is one of the most valuable skills students can develop. In a digital age where information is abundant, the ability to analyse, question and evaluate ideas is essential”
Communication and collaboration also play a vital role. Learning to articulate ideas clearly, listen to others and work effectively as part of a team prepares students for real-world environments. These skills are developed not only through classroom discussion, but also through group projects, extracurricular activities and community engagement. Wellbeing has become another key consideration in education. Supporting emotional resilience, self-confidence and balance enables students to perform at their best academically while maintaining a healthy relationship with learning. Schools that prioritise wellbeing help young people develop coping strategies that will serve them long after formal education ends. Finally, a broader perspective on global citizenship is essential, particularly in a diverse and international city like London. Exposure to different cultures, viewpoints and experiences encourages empathy, open-mindedness and a sense of responsibility beyond one’s immediate surroundings. By combining academic excellence with personal development, modern education aims to nurture well-rounded individuals who are prepared not only for exams, but for life. In doing so, it empowers young people to step confidently into the future, ready to contribute positively to society and adapt to whatever challenges lie ahead.

Back Story Are you sitting comfortably? If not, Back In Action can help
H
ow much is it worth to lose your back pain? That’s an intriguing question, isn’t it? Many would pay a small fortune if they knew for certain that a solution would finally work. According to ergonomic experts at Back In Action, over 80% of their clients experience youthful movement again, with less pain, enabling them to continue with work and enjoy their favourite sports. Over 80% is quite a claim, but customers have voted them Number One in the UK for four consecutive years. As a family business, they take immense pride in this achievement. If you suffer from back pain, it’s time to visit their website or one of their stores. Founder David Newbound notes that many clients arrive at Back In Action having lost hope of permanent relief.
Carefully chosen and high-quality kneeling chairs can help alleviate back pain
“Most pain can be fixed by rest and skilled treatment,” David explains. “However, we often see clients who have been referred by practitioners when progress has stalled. They may have tried various treatments, painkillers, and even switched mattresses, yet they still suffer pain and feel increasingly demoralised.” Spend a little, gain a lot? Many clients find themselves surprised The Stressless Mayfair Chair by the aesthetic appeal of Back In Action’s showrooms, resembling design-led furniture stores. This is intentional: Back In Action sources designs that are both functional and beautiful. They believe that furniture should enhance any home or office without compromising style. Where do the health benefits come from? With a name like Back In Action, it’s no surprise they emphasise movement—getting your spine moving and getting you and your back back into action. The health benefits stem from promoting movement that keeps blood circulating, even while sitting. This can lead to a positive feedback loop of decreased pain and increased activity. A solution for everyone Think your spine is beyond help? Back In Action has developed an innovative method to rejuvenate spinal movement: The Mobiliser. It has gained MOD medical approval and received accolades from thousands who claim it has transformed their lives. A test session is free, and they offer “Spine Reset Packages” for home that are affordable for most people. Back In Action has two showrooms. Visit them in Bristol or Cookham. backinaction.co.uk

The Health Check Nobody Treats Like One By Hayley Brunsden, Founder and Optometrist, CBTR Opticians
M
y mum has a family history of glaucoma. That isn’t just a fact on a medical history form. It’s personal, and it’s one of the reasons I became an optometrist in the first place. When I was setting up CBTR Opticians, every clinical decision came back to one question: What would I want my mum to have? Not what looked impressive. Not what was cheapest. What would give her the best chance of catching something early, before she even knew anything was wrong. That’s the bit people often miss about an eye examination. It isn’t really about reading letters off a wall. It’s one of the few routine health checks that can reveal signs of conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, brain tumours and even certain cancers, often before symptoms appear.
With the advanced OCT and Optomap imaging technology we use at CBTR every day, some eye conditions can even be detected up to eight years earlier than they would have been otherwise. Eight years. And yet eye examinations, for both adults and children are still one of the health checks people are most likely to put off. They’re squeezed between meetings, school runs and everything else life throws at us, treated like an errand rather than an essential part of preventative healthcare. I understand why. Going to the opticians can feel clinical, intimidating or like you’re going to be told off for leaving it too long. That’s exactly what we wanted to change. We’ve designed our practice to feel calm, welcoming and unhurried. Less moving between machines, more time to talk over a cup of tea or coffee. Because when people feel comfortable, they’re far more likely to prioritise their health, and that’s when we have the best chance of finding something early. If you invest in private health screening, blood tests or annual check-ups, ask yourself one simple question: When was your last eye examination? If it’s been more than two years, that could be the missing piece of your preventative healthcare. Book it for the same reason you’d book any other health check. Not because something’s wrong, but because you’d always rather know eight years too early than a day too late. And remember children don’t even get eye tests until they are in secondary school, even then they are cursory tests with little chance of detecting a problem early. I was horrified when I realised that children don’t even get eye tests at all in private schools. And last but not least, if you or your family do happen to need glasses, we’ll make sure those are something to enjoy too. We believe exceptional eyecare and beautiful craftsmanship should always go hand in hand. www.cbtropticians.com

Where Skin Science Meets Regeneration
H
ealthy, confident skin is about far more than appearance. Skin concerns such as acne, acne scarring, pigmentation, rosacea, uneven texture and the visible signs of ageing can have a profound impact on confidence and emotional wellbeing. The future of aesthetic medicine is moving beyond one-size-fits-all treatments towards evidence-based, personalised programmes that restore long-term skin health. At **Crysallis Skin & Wellness** in Caversham, Reading, this philosophy underpins everything we do. Founded by **Frankie Atherstone**, a Skin Scientist with over 22 years’ experience leading complex business transformation programmes before specialising in advanced skin health, the clinic is built on one simple belief: exceptional results come from understanding the biology of the skin before choosing the treatment. Every client begins with their own **Crysallis Blueprint™**—a personalised treatment programme that maps out the most effective sequence of treatments based on their skin biology, lifestyle,
“The Blueprint begins by restoring skin health. Before focusing on tightening, pigmentation or rejuvenation, the skin barrier must be functioning optimally.”

concerns and long-term goals. Rather than recommending isolated procedures, we carefully design a regenerative journey, ensuring each treatment builds upon the previous one to deliver healthier skin, natural rejuvenation and results that continue to improve over time. The Blueprint begins by restoring skin health. Before focusing on tightening, pigmentation or rejuvenation, the skin barrier must be functioning optimally. Hydration, inflammation, vascular health and cellular repair are all carefully assessed and, where necessary, restored before more advanced procedures are introduced. Once the skin is functioning as it should, true regeneration can begin. Through **intelligent treatment sequencing**, complementary technologies are introduced in the right order and at the right time. By combining treatments that work through different biological pathways—and allowing appropriate healing between each stage—we can maximise collagen production, improve skin quality more comprehensively and achieve results that are often greater than any single treatment could deliver alone. One of the clinic’s cornerstone technologies is **NeoGen® Plasma**, an advanced regenerative treatment that stimulates the skin’s natural repair mechanisms. By delivering controlled plasma energy into the deeper layers of the skin, NeoGen encourages new collagen and elastin production while improving firmness, texture and overall skin quality. Unlike treatments that focus solely on the surface, NeoGen creates a regenerative foundation upon which future treatments can be built Depending on each client’s Blueprint, additional technologies may then be introduced. **HIFU (High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound)** provides deep structural lifting and tightening by targeting the SMAS layer beneath the skin, while **Sylfirm X
radiofrequency microneedling** combines dual-wave RF technology with microneedling to stimulate collagen production and effectively treat concerns such as rosacea, melasma, acne scarring, enlarged pores and uneven skin texture. Regenerative medicine also plays an increasingly important role. Premium **exosome therapy** may be incorporated following selected procedures to optimise healing, reduce downtime and enhance the skin’s own regenerative processes. Where collagen loss, declining skin quality or age-related volume changes are contributing factors, carefully selected injectable biostimulators and skin boosters can further enhance results. Treatments such as **Radiesse®** and **Jalupro®** stimulate collagen through different biological mechanisms, improving skin quality, elasticity and structural support. When integrated within a personalised Blueprint, these treatments work synergistically with energy-based technologies to deliver natural, progressive rejuvenation. Importantly, no two Blueprints are ever the same. The success of regenerative aesthetics lies not only in selecting the right treatments, but in understanding the correct timing, sequencing and healing intervals between them. This considered approach allows every stage of treatment to complement the next, creating cumulative improvements that continue to develop naturally over the months ahead. Recognising that healthy skin is closely linked to overall wellbeing, **Crysallis Skin & Wellness** is expanding its wellness offering beyond advanced skin treatments. Clients will soon be able to enjoy relaxing **Japanese-inspired Head Spa experiences** and **lymphatic body therapies**, designed to encourage relaxation, support lymphatic drainage and promote the body’s natural restorative processes.
“The success of regenerative aesthetics lies not only in selecting the right treatments, but in understanding the correct timing, sequencing and healing intervals between them”
The clinic is also introducing advanced wellness services, including comprehensive **blood biomarker testing**, **epigenetic health assessments** and personalised health screening programmes. By gaining a deeper understanding of factors such as inflammation, nutrition, hormones and biological ageing, clients can make informed decisions that benefit both their overall health and the long-term health of their skin. At Crysallis Skin & Wellness, we believe beautiful skin begins with healthy skin—and healthy skin is supported by a healthy body. Through science, regeneration and truly personalised care, our mission is simple: to create a bespoke **Crysallis Blueprint™** that helps every client achieve healthier skin, renewed confidence and lasting wellbeing.

DoctorNow, South Bucks’ Original Private GP Practice
L
ong before private general practice was available, Dr Brian McGirr, an experienced Beaconsfield NHS GP, was asking an important question: how can I offer my patients more time and more meaningful support? In 2003, after fifteen years in the NHS, he founded DoctorNow to provide the answer to that question. Two years later, Dr Richard Angwin, a cardiothoracic surgeon turned GP, joined him. The pair became partners and have hand-picked every doctor who followed; choosing them not just for their clinical excellence but also for their genuine warmth with patients. More than two decades on, that founding idea still shapes everything DoctorNow does. It’s the reason why unhurried appointments are offered, why patients see the same familiar faces each visit, and why they have grown into more than a single practice without losing that personal touch. Today, DoctorNow’s clinical team of twenty experienced GPs and nurses is backed by a dedicated admin team and a network of consultants across almost every specialty. DoctorNow is family medicine in its truest sense, with children, parents and grandparents cared for by doctors who know them on a personal level, not just by their presenting symptoms. The practice has grown with its community. What began at The Old Barn in Old Beaconsfield, DoctorNow relocated to the more spacious

Between the two sites, DoctorNow serves families across South Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire, with a third practice planned for 2027. Much of DoctorNow’s success has been built around it’s well-established membership model, popular with individuals and families. Being a member of DoctorNow brings patients into a genuine community who value being known by name, with priority access and continuity of care being at the core of the membership philosophy. For patients not quite ready to join as a member, pay-asyou-go access is open to everyone, whether visiting the area, seeking a second opinion, or requiring an appointment to help with an immediate or longterm medical issue. ARE YOU SUFFERING WITH KNEE PAIN? Redefining Treatment for Knee Osteoarthritis For many of the 8.5 million people in the UK living with knee osteoarthritis (OA), life is hampered by constant pain, limited mobility, and difficulty with simple, everyday tasks. But there’s hope with Arthrosamid® – the first and only permanent injectable treatment that is proven to maintain a significant, long-lasting reduction in knee OA pain – even four years post treatment. Experts are calling it a ‘game-changer’. People delay seeking help for knee pain, assuming it’s an unavoidable part of ageing. But Arthrosamid® offers patients a new pathway. Unlike traditional treatments, it’s proven to offer respite from knee osteoarthritis with a single treatment, and without the need for surgery. Knee OA: common causes and treatments Knee OA is a long-term condition where shock-absorbing cartilage is worn away, causing bones to rub together and the joint to become stiff, swollen, and painful. Despite OA being the most common type of arthritis and the fastest cause of disability worldwide, the treatment area has seen minimal progression in the last 20 years. With so little known about the exact causes of knee OA, a permanent cure has yet to be discovered. Many people find themselves in an ongoing cycle of treatments, such as painkillers, physiotherapy appointments and various knee joint injectables (e.g. steroids or hyaluronic acid). Despite providing some relief, the effects can often be relatively shortlived, leaving many fearing that knee replacement surgery is the only long-term answer. The emergence of Arthrosamid®, however, has been hailed by leading clinicians as an exciting development; the first and only injectable hydrogel that has been proven to help patients with knee osteoarthritis and offers a real alternative to surgery. How does Arthrosamid® work? Arthrosamid® is a hydrogel made up of 2.5 per cent cross-linked polyacrylamide and 97.5 per cent water. Arthrosamid® combines with the synovial tissue in the knee to form a permanent scaffold, and it’s this unique characteristic that provides a significant reduction in OA pain over a longer period - with one single treatment.

PRIVATE HEALTH
HEALTHY LEGS, CONFIDENT YOU: Mr Michael Gaunt, Consultant Vascular Surgeon, answers the most common questions about varicose veins.
Q: What are the early signs of varicose veins? Many people experience symptoms long before they seek advice. Common signs include: • Visible thread veins or enlarged veins • Raised, bulging veins • Aching or heavy legs • Swollen feet and ankles • Night-time leg cramps If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s worth arranging a specialist assessment rather than waiting for them to progress. Q: How much does treatment cost? Initial consultations with Michael Gaunt start from £250. You’ll receive a clear, personalised treatment plan and have the opportunity to discuss any concerns. We welcome both self-funding and medically insured patients and work with all major private insurers. We welcome both self-funding and medically insured patients and work with all major private insurers: BUPA, AVIVA, WPA, CIGNA, Healix, Vitality, Alliance Surgical. Q: I’ve noticed thread veins and bulging veins on my legs. Should I be concerned? Yes. While many people assume varicose and thread veins are simply a cosmetic concern, they can often be the first signs of an underlying vein condition. Healthy veins contain tiny valves that help blood flow back to the heart. When these valves stop working efficiently, blood pools in the veins, causing them to enlarge and become visible. Early assessment is important because untreated varicose veins can gradually worsen over time, potentially leading to leg swelling, skin discolouration and, in more advanced cases, leg ulcers. 6 2 J U LY 2 0 2 6
Q: What treatments are available? Treatment depends entirely on your individual vein condition. I offer a range of minimally invasive procedures including: • Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) • ClariVein® (MOCA) • Ultrasound Guided Foam Sclerotherapy (UGFS) • Saline Micro-Injection Sclerotherapy for thread veins Each treatment is carefully selected following your ultrasound assessment to achieve the safest and most effective outcome.

We understand what it means to provide exceptional resident care, every moment 6 6 J U LY 2 0 2 6 of the day.
Why Today’s Later Life Looks Different To How You Thought For many of us, thoughts of later life are shaped by outdated perceptions. We picture care as a compromise, a step away from independence, community, and the lifestyle we’ve always enjoyed. But what if it looked entirely different? Across Buckinghamshire, families are beginning to rethink what exceptional later living can be. They’re asking not just “What care is available?” but “How can Mum continue living the life she loves?” or “How can Dad remain connected to the people and passions that matter most?” The answer lies in a new approach – one that focuses on wellbeing, choice, and meaningful experiences. At Haddenham Park Care Home & Apartments, in Buckinghamshire, later life is being reimagined through thoughtfully designed spaces, innovative technology, and a genuine sense of belonging. From elegant cafés and wellness facilities to rooftop sensory gardens and community events, every aspect of daily life is centred around helping people continue being themselves. For some, that means enjoying an independent lifestyle in a luxury apartment with the reassurance that care can evolve as needs change. For others, it means specialist residential, nursing, dementia, respite, or day care, delivered with compassion and dignity. Technology also plays an important role. Innovations such as voice-activated support, digital care planning, and intelligent falls prevention systems create greater independence and peace of mind, giving families confidence that their loved ones are safe while preserving choice and autonomy.
HADDENHAM HEALTHCARE
Perhaps most importantly, later life doesn’t happen behind closed doors. Whether it’s attending a community coffee morning, joining a support group, hosting family celebrations in a private dining room, or welcoming grandchildren for an overnight stay in the guest suite, connection remains at the heart of everything. Because the question is no longer “When is the right time for care?” It’s “What kind of life do you want to live next?”

When Is the Right Time to Start the Conversation? For many families, the question isn’t whether support will be needed one day, it’s knowing when to start the conversation.
P
erhaps you’ve noticed Mum isn’t getting out as much as she once did, Dad seems less confident driving, or they’re becoming more forgetful. Maybe they live some distance away and you’re relying on reassuring phone calls rather than seeing how they’re really managing. They may have received a diagnosis of Dementia, Parkinsons or another medical condition that means their life style will be impacted significantly. It’s a familiar situation for many families and a subject that can be difficult to raise without implying they can no longer cope. “The good news is that introducing care doesn’t have to mean giving up independence. In fact, starting early often helps people maintain it for longer,” says Trudi, Founder and Owner of Amersham based Ashridge Home Care, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this September. “I started Ashridge because I wanted to create the kind of care company I would have trusted with my own parents. Many families begin with just a few hours of support each week. Whether it’s companionship, help around the home, shopping, appointments or simply knowing someone is checking in regularly, visiting care provides reassurance not just for those needing care, but for the people who love them.” Trudi adds, “Many of our clients’ sons and daughters are balancing demanding careers, family life and supporting teenagers through GCSEs and A-levels. They want the very best for their parents
but simply can’t be there every day.” At Ashridge Home Care, we understand how difficult it can be to introduce the idea of accepting help to parents who have enjoyed long, independent lives. That’s why respite or shortterm support following a hospital stay can be such a gentle introduction to care at home. As needs change, care can grow too – from a few weekly visits to 24/7 live-in care, allowing people to remain safely in the home they love. From our Old Amersham offices, where we also train our carers, we host free talks and webinars covering care options, Lasting Powers of Attorney, wills, estate planning and funding care. Keeping your space, not just changing your address
Castle View Apartments; Approx 80% of the size of a conventional 3 bed family house in the Windsor area
M
oving to Castle View does not have to mean a drastic downsize. Many of our 2 bed apartments offer generous floor areas, so you can keep most of the space you are used to, with the bonus of modern design, stepfree access and much lower maintenance. As a guide, a typical Castle View 2 bed apartment is around 80% the size of a conventional 3 bed family house in the Windsor area. This is intended as a helpful comparison, not an exact promise for every home, but it shows that you can often move to Castle View without feeling you have given up too much room. Where this figure comes from To make this comparison fair and understandable, Castle View has used widely quoted figures on UK and South East home sizes alongside our own floor plans. • Independent UK housing data suggests a typical 3 bedroom home nationally is around 1,012 sq ft. • Homes in the South East – including Windsor – are generally larger than this national average. • For Windsor, it is reasonable to treat around 1,100 sq ft as a conservative benchmark for a 3 bed house, sitting at the lower end of typical local size ranges. • A typical Castle View 2 bed apartment is approximately 880 sq ft, which is around 80% of 1,100 sq ft.
Many of our homeowners move from the South East and Windsor area, where houses are generally larger, so we have chosen to benchmark against this local 3 bed estimate instead, to keep the comparison conservative and fair. The “around 80%” figure is a guide only. Actual sizes of both Castle View apartments and individual 3 bed houses vary, sometimes significantly, depending on layout, age and type of property. • All floor areas quoted for Castle View are based on internal measurements. • The 3 bed house size used for comparison is a benchmark figure, not a survey of every property in Windsor. • Prospective purchasers should always refer to the detailed floor plans and confirmed measurements for the specific apartment they are interested in. castleviewwindsor.co.uk

As part of our background research into typical home sizes, Castle View used an AI tool to help collate publicly available information on average UK and Windsor 3 bedroom house sizes. The AI output suggested a Windsor range of 1,100–1,250 sq ft and referenced independent data on national home sizes.
Keep your space! Gain so much more! A move is not about losing your address, but having the right size home, modern design, step free access and much lower maintenance.
There are many practical and emotional benefits to be enjoyed by moving to an Integrated Retirement Community, like Castle View, Windsor. Our well-insulated 2-bed apartments are approx. 80% the size of a conventional 3 bed family house.*

Caring for a loved one with dementia
D
ementia is a life-changing condition that touches countless families and friends across the UK. Each person’s experience of living with dementia is unique, requiring a tailored approach to care. For families or friends facing the challenging decision of finding the right care for a loved one with dementia, understanding the support and resources available can make all the difference. The Orders of St John Care Trust (OSJCT), a not-for-profit charity, is a leading name in dementia care. Driven by compassion, their experienced teams are committed to providing outstanding support, ensuring the wellbeing of their residents as well as families and friends. From expert teams to therapeutic approaches, OSJCT offers a comprehensive, individualised approach to dementia care. In this guide from a series on care, you might find helpful information on dementia care at OSJCT. Understanding dementia Dementia is an umbrella term for conditions affecting memory, thinking, and communication, including Alzheimer’s disease. Dementia impacts every individual differently, underscoring the importance of personalised care plans. OSJCT employs skilled dementia specialists, including Admiral Nurses and Dementia Leads, to guide families, friends as well as colleagues through the complexities of dementia care with empathy and expertise. Introducing Admiral Nurses: skilled dementia specialists OSJCT is one of only ten care providers in the UK with a dedicated team of Admiral Nurses, supported by the charity Dementia UK. explains: “Our skilled employees work closely with Admiral Nurses to stay up to date on best practices in dementia care. This collaborative approach enhances the wellbeing and quality of life for all those who live and work in our homes, or who visit.” Therapeutic approaches and care home design Effective dementia care goes beyond medical support. OSJCT incorporates therapeutic approaches such as sensory activities, including gardening, music and art, as well as reminiscence sessions to enhance residents’ emotional wellbeing and mental health. Many of their care homes are also thoughtfully designed to support residents with dementia, featuring clear signage, calming colour schemes and lighting, and accessible layouts to promote independence and reduce anxiety. Life Story: the heart of personalised care One of OSJCT’s standout initiatives is their “All About Me” Life Story work - a personalised record of a resident’s history, their interests, and significant relationships. This invaluable tool underpins care as well as helps residents maintain their sense of identity and fosters trust and deeper connections with caregivers and loved ones. Life Stories take various forms, including scrapbooks, videos, or memory boxes. They can include details such as childhood memories, career milestones, favourite foods, and daily routines. By understanding the past and integrating these personal stories into care plans, OSJCT ensures that every resident is treated as an individual with unique preferences and needs. With organisations like OSJCT at the forefront of dementia care, families and friends can find the support they need to navigate later life with understanding, dignity, and love. The Orders of St John Care Trust offers dementia care across Buckinghamshire, including at Fremantle Court, Farnham Common House, Cherry Garth and Wing View Care Centre. I
started Eximius in 2016 after caring for my own mother. I remember believing the choice was between short, scheduled care visits or moving her into a care home. Neither felt right. There is another way. Live-in care enables someone to stay in the home they know, in the Buckinghamshire village they’ve always called theirs, with one dedicated carer living alongside them rather than a rotating team fitting them into a timetable. Over time, that carer gets to know the person behind the care needs their routines, preferences, interests and the little things that make each day feel familiar. That’s how independence and dignity are preserved. We hold a CQC Outstanding rating, achieved by fewer than 4% of UK care providers. But outstanding care isn’t a certificate on the wall - it’s a promise we make every day. For me, it was never about building a care company. It was about creating the kind of care I wished had been available for my own mother. Outstanding care is knowing exactly how someone likes their morning tea, encouraging them to keep doing the things they enjoy, and being there for quiet reassurance just as much as practical support.

Live-in care means life carries on. It means keeping the dog, tending the garden, meeting friends for lunch, attending bridge, remembering the grandchildren’s birthdays, or even taking the holiday you thought was no longer possible, with a trusted carer by your side. Care shouldn’t mean giving up the life you’ve built – it should help you continue living it. Every one of our carers is directly employed by us, never supplied through an agency, so families always know exactly who is caring for someone they love. We remain a small, familyrun team, meaning the person who answers the phone knows your family’s story, not just your file number. Every family we support is different, so our care is built around the individual, never the clock. To us, outstanding care means making things possible, protecting the life someone has built, and giving families confidence that their loved one can continue living safely, comfortably and independently at home. The garden you’ve always wanted may not be the one you imagined
T
here comes a point when many homeowners look out at their garden and realise something isn’t quite working; the garden feels uninspiring and unwelcoming. There are some mature plants, perhaps a patio and a bbq has been added over the years, and there may even be some lovely individual features. Yet somehow the space never quite invites you outside. It looks pleasant enough, but it doesn’t feel like somewhere you naturally want to spend time. More and more, we’re finding that people aren’t simply asking for a ‘nice’ garden. They’re looking for somewhere that helps them slow down, entertain with ease, enjoy family life and reconnect with nature - without really thinking about why it works. That’s where thoughtful design makes all the difference. Rather than beginning with plants or paving, every project starts by getting to know the people who will use the space and what inspires them

visually. We talk about how they live, the gardens and places they admire, and the atmosphere they want to create. How do you move through the garden? Are you a sun worshipper or do you prefer to chill in the shade? Where might you enjoy a quiet coffee, gather with friends or simply pause for a few moments at the end of the day? The answers shape every decision that follows. Structure, planting, materials and carefully framed views are composed together to create gardens that feel calm, balanced and effortless. Spaces flow naturally from one to another, encouraging exploration while remaining comfortable to live with throughout the seasons. At Richard Rogers Designs, we believe exceptional gardens are created through thoughtful design, careful collaboration and meticulous attention to detail. Working alongside trusted specialist landscapers, we oversee the journey from concept to completion, ensuring every design is realised with the quality and craftsmanship it deserves. We love creating that unmistakable ‘wow’ moment when a client first steps into their completed garden. But the real measure of success comes later, when they tell us it’s become their favourite place to spend time. Because the most successful gardens aren’t defined by individual features. They’re defined by how they make you feel. www.richardrogersdesigns.com

Before You Renovate
5 DECISIONS THAT SHAPE HOW A HOME WILL FEEL - LONG BEFORE FINISHES ARE CHOSEN
A
renovation is more than choosing finishes. It’s a sequence of decisions that shape how your home feels to live in, every morning, every evening, every year. The part most homeowners overlook until it’s too late is the part that matters most: flow, light, storage, sequence, and who is leading the design. FLOW BEFORE FINISHES Every home has flow, whether you design it or not. It’s the rhythm of daily life, how you move from bedroom to bathroom, from kitchen to dining, from living room to rest. A well‑flowed home feels effortless. A poorly‑flowed home creates small, constant friction that becomes exhausting over years. Finishes are visible. Flow is felt. A beautiful kitchen with a bad layout will disappoint you for fifteen years. A modest kitchen with intelligent flow will feel like home from the first morning. Sightlines matter. What you see from the places you sit and stand shapes how your home feels. 8 2 J U LY 2 0 2 6
LIGHT IS THE MOST UNDERUSED TOOL Light is the atmosphere of a home, and the most expensive mistake to fix if left too late. Most renovations think about lighting only when the electrician arrives. By then, the wires are already in the wrong place. Lighting is not a finishes decision. It’s a planning decision. Start with natural light: • Where the morning sun falls. • Where the afternoon light lands. • Which rooms glow, and which sit in shadow. Then layer artificial light: • Ambient for general illumination • Task for function • Accent for atmosphere • A room lit only by downlights feels like an office. • The fix is layers, not more ceiling spots. STORAGE AS ARCHITECTURE, NOT AFTERTHOUGHT Every home contains things. The question is where they will live. Bad storage isn’t lack of storage, it’s storage in the wrong place. This is what creates clutter that no amount of tidying can fix.
“A renovation is rarely simple. It involves money, time, dust, contractors, deliveries, deadlines and a hundred decisions you didn’t know you would have to make. There is no version of the process that is entirely painless” Joinery is architecture. Done well, it disappears into the walls and uses dead spaces beautifully: under‑stair voids, eaves, alcoves, hallways, window seats, bedhead walls.
The earlier they are made, the better they are. Resolve layout, lighting, joinery, materials and palette before construction begins. It costs more in design time at the start, and saves far more in money, stress and regret at the end.
Store things where they are used. Coats by the door. Bedding near the bedroom. Paperwork in the office. When storage and flow are designed together, the home feels calm and intuitive.
WHEN TO BRING IN AN INTERIOR DESIGNER The honest answer: earlier than most homeowners think. A designer brought in at planning stage can: • reshape the layout • move walls and doorways • integrate joinery seamlessly • plan lighting correctly • prevent mid‑build mistakes A designer brought in late can choose lovely things, but they cannot fix the layout or undo structural decisions. • Early designers prevent regret. • Late designers manage it. • If you’re unsure about layout, storage, lighting or flow, now is the moment to bring in a designer.
THE HIDDEN COST OF DESIGNING AS YOU BUILD Designing as you build is the most stressful, expensive and quietly damaging way to renovate. When decisions are made under pressure, with dust everywhere and contractors waiting, they are rarely the decisions you would make with clarity. A renovation is the sum of its decisions.
CLOSING MESSAGE Renovations involve money, time, dust, deadlines and hundreds of decisions you didn’t know you’d have to make. There is no painless version, but there is a calmer one. • Start with design before construction. • Resolve flow before finishes. • Treat light and storage as architecture. • Bring in the right people early. Turn a stressful process into a creative one, and a house into a home that feels effortless to live in.

Styling an Icon:
5 ways to style the CH24 Wishbone Chair “Scandinavian design’s golden age truly took flight around the time of the postwar furniture boom, meaning the two styles borrowed characteristics from each other relentlessly”
8 6 J U LY 2 0 2 6
A
h, Scandinavia, the mere mention of the word conjures imagery of Mads Mikkelsen pedalling down a Copenhagen cycle path on his way to acquire Kardemummabullar at some local bakery. But when we’re not thinking of the pastries or the pastel coloured buildings, we’re thinking, of course, about the furniture. None can claim to be a Scandi design symbol more than the perfection in paper cord that is Hans Wegner’s CH24 Wishbone chair. While it is an icon of Northern Europe by one of the old masters of chair making, times and trends change, so how can you adapt one of Denmark’s finest to your own tastes? Time to find out in our style guide below. Mid-century masterpiece: To call the CH24 a
Mid-Century chair would be about as accurate as you can get. Released at the very midpoint of the 20th century in 1950, its symbiosis with this era of furniture is almost guaranteed. Scandinavian design’s golden age truly took flight around the time of the post-war furniture boom, meaning the two styles borrowed characteristics from each other relentlessly. Hence why both often deploy copious amounts of wood, clean lines and versatility, all qualities that define the star of this article. To make them both work in your home is to harmonise their defining qualities. Take a hero piece like a large oval dining table and balance its understated splendour with Oak Oiled CH24s, add that signature 1950s flash of brilliance with a statement primary coloured rug, then add in something with a paper shade for the pendant light.
Icons of industry: From a match made in 1950s heaven to perhaps the most unlikely couple in design - they do say opposites attract. In this case, that is incredibly fortunate, because the contrast between the dulcet tones of the industrial world and the soft shades of the Scandi one is so stark that they actually work together rather beautifully. Albeit with a very specific edition of the CH24. We are, of course, talking about the sultry, obsidian hues of the all-black version. The recipe for this stylistic choice is simple: muted tones, rich textures and bold, straight-edged shapes. Take a dark obsidian dining table to match the accompanying chairs, brighten the space both above and below, firstly with a silvery but sleek rug and then with a moody, maximalist spotlight. Supplemented Scandi: We’ve arrived; it had to happen eventually. The obvious choice for one of the most recognisable symbols of Danish design, surrounded by other icons from its homeland. Make hygge (Google is your friend for the uninitiated) your priority and set yourself up for a serene Scandi dining experience like no other. Bright wood, and lots of it, should take centre stage. In fact, every surface that is not part of the floor or attached to the ceiling should embrace it. Save warm yet simplistic hues and soft textures for those remaining elements. Place Oak Soaped CH24s around an equally tranquil table in a similar finish, add an earthtoned rug, and complete the setting with a pastel pendant, perhaps from Louis Pouslen, a true lesson in Scandinavian illumination. Abstract and Artful: One style that Danish design is rarely associated with is abstract furniture. Peaceful and serene, yes, but typically uniform. Make no mistake, this works massively in its favour
within its natural habitat; you can mix and match multiple brands to your heart’s content with little concern for clashes. But what about the overtly vibrant among us? Those creating spaces that blur the lines between home and art gallery? Would I be talking about it if there wasn’t an option? Put on your rainbow-tinted glasses and feast your eyes on Carl Hansen’s collection of colourful classics: from Orange to Olive, Hans Wegner’s masterpiece is perfectly placed to go hueto-hue with your boldest statement pieces. Roll out the leopard print carpet, place your colourful chairs around a multi-hued table base, and complete the scene with the exuberant glow of a statement pendant that conveys your own unique style. Cosy Club: Let’s wrap up this list with the perfect setting for those of us who need a cosy place to close out the day. When it comes to the CH24, it is not just the materials that create a comforting atmosphere, but the shapes and colours too. Rounded curves, smooth, supple lines, all carefully carved in this case from that great conveyor of calm: walnut. A timber that naturally exudes warmth and welcome, while offering an effortlessly easy-on-the-eye aesthetic. So, we know walnut is the way forward, but we are aiming for the pinnacle of home comfort. Start your setting with the softness of a thick, fluffy rug, then lean into the craftsmanship of wood specialists, use a dark timber like Walnut to consolidate the cosiness. Finally, complete the atmosphere with a soft, glowing set of lamps surrounding the area. chaplins.co.uk

The Period Ironmonger The Heart of the Home

hile the kitchen has long been considered the heart of the home, it has never been more so than now, as we see a definite move towards open plan kitchen and family spaces. Jayne explains “With people spending more time in their family kitchens, choice of cabinet hardware styles and finish is becoming super important. Getting the balance of function and aesthetic is key and we need to consider the whole space to get this right.” Richard goes on to say “We are definitely seeing an increased demand for more modern and elegant designs. Cabinet knobs on backplates create a more modern look and work really well on both drawers and cabinets. The warmer tones of unlacquered brass and dark bronze remain firmly on trend, which work really well against popular painted kitchens.” “The use of edge pulls is also increasing, they create a contemporary, linear look and work well where there is a lot of cabinetry and a simple, unfussy look is desired.” Jayne adds. 9 8 J U LY 2 0 2 6

SAM COLES LIGHTING
The Art of Illumination
I
f you have ever been involved in the building or renovation of a home, you may know the frustration well - the realisation, months after the work is finished, that the lighting simply doesn’t feel right. There might be too many downlights scattered across the ceilings, a sitting room that never quite comes to life, or light switches in all the wrong places. These are not minor irritations. Once the walls and ceilings are closed, such decisions are effectively permanent, and rarely inexpensive to undo. It is precisely this that Sam Coles has spent twenty-five years helping her clients avoid.
“The aim is not necessarily extravagance but coherence - rooms that work as beautifully after dark as they do by day” 1 0 2 J U LY 2 0 2 6
An independent lighting adviser based in Bedfordshire and operating throughout the Home Counties, she occupies an unusual position in her field. Her fee covers the advice itself, which means her recommendations are shaped entirely by what suits her clients’ homes, their budgets, and the way they aspire to live. She has no interest in whatever a supplier hopes to move that season, nor in who offers the better margin - and that independence is precisely what makes her advice worth having. Her clients range from private homeowners to the architects, interior designers, and smart-home specialists who engage her on their clients’ behalf. Whether you are undertaking the wholesale renovation of a period property or building afresh, the principle holds - the right decisions must be made in the right order, and at the right moment, before the cables are plastered in or tiled over for good. She brings to this a portfolio of award-winning schemes across homes of every age and style, from medieval listed to ultra modern. Good lighting, she is quick to point out, is not necessarily a matter of spending more; it is a matter of thinking clearly and planning ahead. The aim is not necessarily extravagance but coherence - rooms that work as beautifully after dark as they do by day. If you are approaching a project and wish to get it right the first time, a conversation with her may prove among the more worthwhile early investments you make. www.samcoleslighting.co.uk

Skills on show: Eco Tiffin star in the Skill Builder episode
L
ocal building, refurbishment and renovation experts Eco Tiffin have added online algorithms to their slew of expert services after being featured on the popular Skill Builder YouTube channel. The 25-minute episode was released at the end of February, which features owner Robert Tiffin.
‘The big secret in renovation isn’t really a secret at all – it’s about knowledge’ “Our speciality is restoration and renovations, but with a particular focus on energy-saving in property, particularly with external defects and damp-related problems,” says the director. In the video he visits a current renovation project which is a listed building, notable in the energy-
efficient market for the substantial and innovative solutions often required in getting old properties up to the eco levels of modern builds. This is a house in an AONB, conservation area but not listed. In the YouTube video, Robert tours his way around the stunning listed building with Skill Builder host Roger Bisby, with a particular focus on damp, rot and cold floors. Views of the video are booming, with Robert, a Quantity Surveyor and certified thermographer by trade explaining the philosophy behind a company originally established way back in 1695 – one which has evolved over the centuries from providing timber treatment and damp proofing, into full building and maintenance services. “The big secret in renovation isn’t really a secret at all – it’s about knowledge, precision, and making sure your team are willing to go the extra mile. If you have that, you will succeed”

HOUSE H OUSE & GARDEN RENOVATION GUIDE
Giving coastal décor a 2026 touch Discover how this classic style gets a fresh and contemporary update just in time for summer.
“S
ummer is just around the corner, and it’s not surprising that a lot of us have the beach on our minds. If the ocean is calling and you’re inspired to decorate with it in mind, look no further than coastal décor. The classic elements of coastal décor, like nautical prints, seashell motifs, and navy blue and white colour combination, can seem a bit dated in 2026 or feel too cliché. So, how do we update coastal décor? By giving it a 2026 touch. The updated coastal interiors are more grounded with a rustic touch while still maintaining the vibrancy of their original theme. Natural textures will always be a key part of coastal décor, and the focus should be less on seashell motifs and more on creating a relaxing, layered look. Wood is still an important part of coastal décor, but it shouldn’t be overly kitschy. Layering different wood tones like oak and walnut together makes the space feel cosy and lived-in. Decorating with bamboo and rattan should be carefully curated, such as introducing them as accessories like a vase, a lamp or an accent piece of furniture. Aside from wood, we’re seeing natural materials like stone for the walls or terrazzo flooring being used more in coastal décor. Another key natural element we’re seeing a lot in this updated trend is rope or jute textures. Designers are introducing it through furniture, lighting, or accessories and accents such as mirrors or pouffes. Bringing in rope or jute accents can be seen as a nod to classic coastal interiors while also showcasing its versatility as a material. It can enhance a room when it’s woven, twisted or moulded, highlighting its sculptural qualities. When it comes to the colour palette, we think it’s time to give the nautical tones a rest. Designers are taking inspiration from sun-soaked Mediterranean palettes or Palm Springs-inspired colours and making them feel more calming. With the popularity of earth tones, we’re seeing more designers and brands use light blues, soft greens, butter yellow and brown tones for this updated version of coastal décor. Soft pinks and peach tones are great for a hint of the unexpected and bring a stylish contrast when paired with these earth tones as the base. Recently, we have also seen more pared-back colour palettes like white, blue and rust (as an accent), cream, mustard and grey

tones or pale blues, yellows and white tones. Even though coastal décor is now more refined, it doesn’t mean you can’t have fun when accessorising. Take the time to curate what you would like to showcase. This could be a jute vase, green glassware set, pops of pink and peach with cushions and throws. The element of fun and whimsy will always be there; it’s now just more sophisticated and design-led.” furniturechoice.co.uk
