Finding the right way forward for your family

T

he summer months can bring their fair share of challenges and emotional strain for many couples. Spending more time together on holiday, managing childcare throughout the school holidays and dealing with changes to familiar routines can bring existing relationship difficulties into sharper focus. As autumn begins and everyday life resumes, some people may find themselves considering separation or divorce and wondering where to turn to next.

Speaking to a family solicitor does not necessarily mean that a relationship has reached its end. Many people seek legal advice at an early stage simply to understand their position, explore the options available to them, and to understand how life may look in the event they were to bring their relationship to an end. In some circumstances, reconciliation may still be possible, provided it is both realistic and genuinely wanted by both parties.

An initial meeting with a family solicitor is therefore an important first step. It provides an opportunity to get an initial view on your situation and to meet the person who may be handling your case. It is important that you feel comfortable, supported and confident in your solicitor’s advice. Divorce and separation can be difficult and emotional experiences, so establishing a relationship of trust from the outset is essential. For the solicitor, the first meeting is an opportunity to understand your circumstances and any concerns you may have, to identify your aims and manage expectations about the likely process and potential outcomes. It also allows the solicitor to consider whether advice may be required from other professionals, such as an accountant and/or a financial adviser. How to prepare for your initial meeting Before attending your first appointment, there are several practical steps that can help you make the most of the meeting. • You will have your ID verified for regulatory purposes. This is standard practice and your solicitor will explain the process to you. • You may also need to supply relevant documents, including any previous court orders, prenuptial or postnuptial agreements or existing parenting plans. Gathering these documents in advance can help your solicitor understand your circumstances more quickly. • Protecting your privacy is also important. Make sure your partner cannot access your emails, particularly if your accounts are connected to shared or synchronised devices. Communications between you and your solicitor are confidential, and it is vital that this confidentiality is maintained. • It can also be helpful to prepare a chronology setting out the key events and dates in your relationship. If you have children, include information about their current care arrangements, who looks after them and the proportion of care provided by each parent. • Think carefully about your main objectives and the outcomes that matter most to you. You should also consider the areas in which you may be prepared to compromise as the matter progresses. • If you have any concerns about your safety or the safety of any children, you should also inform the solicitor.

• Prepare a list of questions to take with you. An initial meeting can be emotional, and it may be difficult to remember everything you wanted to discuss. Your solicitor may not be able to answer every question immediately, but they should explain which issues can be addressed at that stage and when further answers are likely to become available. • Do not be afraid to ask about fees. Your solicitor should provide an estimate of the potential costs involved, and the initial appointment will typically be available for a fixed fee. • You may wish to bring a trusted friend or family member for emotional support. There can be a significant amount of information to absorb, and having another person present may help you remember what was discussed. By the end of the meeting, your solicitor should have listened carefully to your concerns, answered your initial questions and explained the options available in a clear and reassuring way. They should support you through the next steps at a pace that feels manageable, helping you make informed decisions that are right for you and your family. More Than 400 Years of Hospitality in the Heart of Beaconsfield There are some buildings that do more than occupy a place in a town. They become part of its story.

I

n the heart of Beaconsfield Old Town, the beautiful Tudor building now home to Browns Beaconsfield has been welcoming guests since the early 1600s. Purpose-built as an inn and in continuous hospitality use ever since, its story is intertwined with that of Beaconsfield itself. Centuries ago, Beaconsfield was an important stopping point on the journey between London and Oxford. Before railways transformed travel, the journey could take around two days, making the town a natural place for travellers to rest, dine and change or rest their horses. At the height of the coaching era, as many as twenty coaches could pass through Beaconsfield in a day. More than four centuries later, remarkably, the purpose of this historic building has changed very little. People still step through its doors to meet friends, share a meal, raise a glass and spend time together, although today’s visitors are rather more likely to arrive by car than horse-drawn coach. Historic surroundings, modern Beaconsfield Today, Browns Beaconsfield brings contemporary brasserie dining to a setting filled with character. The Tudor architecture provides a striking backdrop throughout the year, but the building takes on a particularly special atmosphere as the weekend approaches. Every Friday evening, live music brings another dimension to the restaurant. Dinner flows into drinks, cocktails are poured at the bar and live performers provide the soundtrack to the start of the weekend. It’s an easy way to make Friday night feel like an occasion without having to travel into London.

28 AUGUST 2026

Summer on the terrace As summer settles over Beaconsfield, the terrace comes into its own — an inviting setting for long lunches, evening drinks and cocktails in the sunshine. It is a lovely spot from which to enjoy the slower pace of a summer afternoon before the restaurant comes alive for the evening. And perhaps there is something fitting about it all. For hundreds of years, people travelling through Beaconsfield have stopped here in search of food, drink, conversation and hospitality. The fashions have changed, the menus have evolved and horsedrawn coaches have disappeared from the Oxford Road. But the simple pleasure of gathering around a table has endured. More than 400 years after the first guests arrived, this remarkable Tudor building is still doing exactly what it was built to do: welcoming people. www.browns-restaurants.co.uk

The Antique Collective C

oins are one of the most common items people bring into the shop, usually tucked away in an old biscuit tin, a drawer, or an album that hasn’t been opened for years. They’re often inherited, sometimes collected, and almost always come with the same question: “Are these worth anything?” The answer is often more interesting than people expect. While age can play a part, it’s rarely the only thing that determines value. We look at factors such as rarity, condition, the metal a coin is struck in, its date, mint mark and, in some cases, small variations or minting errors that can make one coin far more desirable than another. Gold sovereigns are a good example. Many people assume they’re simply worth their weight in gold, but certain dates or levels of preservation can make them particularly desirable to collectors. The same is true of many silver coins, where collector interest can sometimes outweigh the value of the precious metal itself. One piece of advice we always give is to resist the temptation to clean old coins. It might seem like the obvious thing to do, but cleaning can remove the original surface and will significantly reduce collector appeal. A coin is always best left exactly as it was found. At The Antique Collective, we regularly assess everything from single sovereigns to collections built over a lifetime. Whether you’ve inherited a small box of coins or simply found a few old pieces while clearing a drawer, it’s always worth having them looked at properly. You might discover they’re simply an interesting reminder of the past. Equally, you may be holding something far rarer than you realise. Either way, we’d be delighted to welcome you into the shop to share our knowledge and help uncover the story behind your collection.

F

or many married couples, the family home holds sentimental and financial value, and it can often be difficult to decide how to deal with the home on separation. It is not uncommon for one partner to discover that they are not named as a legal owner of the property. This can lead to increased concern and distress when the non-owning partner grapples with the prospect of losing their home or being unable to rehouse themselves. At KJ Smith Solicitors, located in the heart of Beaconsfield Old Town, our experienced Family Law team is here to provide expert guidance and to help you navigate these concerns. Protecting yourself and your assets A Matrimonial Homes Right Notice protects a non-owning partner’s potential financial interest in the family home. If your partner owns the family home in their sole name, without a Matrimonial Homes Right Notice in place, they may be able to sell the property, and you could be left unable to claim your financial interest in the property. Having a Matrimonial Homes Right Notice in place provides legal protection over any interest

HEATHERTON SCHOOL

Preparing Girls To Succeed

I

n April, Alice Fletcher took the helm at Heatherton School, an all-girls Prep in the heart of Amersham. With a wealth of Prep experience from around the world, and an all-girls education herself, Alice has a clear vision for Heatherton, and a plan for getting girls’ prep school education right. For Alice, this means preserving everything that makes Heatherton special: its warm, supportive atmosphere, involved community and lively academic culture, while looking forward. With plans to build an ambitious 11+ provision, Alice hopes to open pathways for every girl to access Buckinghamshire’s leading grammar schools. “I am a strong believer in all-girls education, and I very much felt a strong fit with Heatherton as soon as I walked in, as a school with so much going on inside,” Alice explains. “I think girls flourish in an environment where they are free to be themselves, and at Heatherton, the girls are confident to do well because they are known, heard and understood.” That confidence is evident throughout Heatherton. Through small class sizes, a close community and a range of opportunities, girls are given the space to find their voice. Our girls are articulate and assured: something also reflected in Heatherton’s most recent ISI Report, where the school was awarded a ‘significant strength’ in Oracy. This journey starts early. From the age of three, children can join Heatherton’s co-educational

nursery, where a playful, enquiry-based approach, inspired by Finnish education models, lays the foundations for learning. With specialist teaching, modern facilities and a strong focus on social and emotional development, children build curiosity and confidence that sticks with them for life. From this foundation comes a curriculum that is deliberately broad and adventurous. “It’s important to prepare the girls not only for assessments and future schools, but for the world that they’re growing up in,” says Alice. “This means offering a broad STEM curriculum, continuing to build digital literacy in an ageappropriate way, and weaving critical thinking, collaboration and creativity through every subject.” The result? Confident, articulate girls who possess all the skills they’ll need to succeed and access the top secondary schools in Buckinghamshire and beyond. Preparing Young People for Life Beyond the Classroom

E

ducation today is about far more than academic results alone. While strong examination outcomes remain important, there is growing recognition that young people must also be equipped with the skills and mindset needed to thrive in an increasingly complex and fast-changing world. Preparing students for life beyond the classroom has become a central focus of modern education. Critical thinking is one of the most valuable skills students can develop. In a digital age where information is abundant, the ability to analyse, question and evaluate ideas is essential. Encouraging curiosity and independent thought helps young people become confident decisionmakers, capable of navigating challenges both in further education and in their future careers Equally important is creativity. Whether expressed through the arts, problem-solving or innovation, creativity allows students to approach situations with flexibility and imagination. Education that values creative thinking alongside academic rigour fosters resilience and adaptability – qualities that are increasingly sought after in higher education and the workplace.

42 AUGUST 2026

“Critical thinking is one of the most valuable skills students can develop. In a digital age where information is abundant, the ability to analyse, question and evaluate ideas is essential”

Communication and collaboration also play a vital role. Learning to articulate ideas clearly, listen to others and work effectively as part of a team prepares students for real-world environments. These skills are developed not only through classroom discussion, but also through group projects, extracurricular activities and community engagement. Wellbeing has become another key consideration in education. Supporting emotional resilience, self-confidence and balance enables students to perform at their best academically while maintaining a healthy relationship with learning. Schools that prioritise wellbeing help young people develop coping strategies that will serve them long after formal education ends. Finally, a broader perspective on global citizenship is essential, particularly in a diverse and international city like London. Exposure to different cultures, viewpoints and experiences encourages empathy, open-mindedness and a sense of responsibility beyond one’s immediate surroundings. By combining academic excellence with personal development, modern education aims to nurture well-rounded individuals who are prepared not only for exams, but for life. In doing so, it empowers young people to step confidently into the future, ready to contribute positively to society and adapt to whatever challenges lie ahead.

hildhood is a precious time, a chapter to be nurtured, celebrated and filled with opportunity. At Westbrook Hay, we want these years to be among the very best in your child’s life. For us, “the best” is built on four foundations: a caring ethos, academic ambition, a broad curriculum and a fabulous setting. Together, they create an environment where children are happy, confident, successful and well prepared for their future. Our caring ethos lies at the heart of all we do. When children feel supported and valued, they are eager to learn and grow. Small classes enable teachers to know every child as an individual, fostering relationships and creating a personalised learning experience that helps pupils flourish. We nurture character, confidence and values that last a lifetime. We pair this with academic ambition. Learning is central to life at Westbrook Hay, and our pupils are challenged to think deeply, work hard and achieve.

et across our three vibrant sites in Maidenhead, Claires Court is an all-through independent school built around strong values. Our renowned ‘Diamond Model’ of education provides a tailored blend of academic focus and social growth. Boys and girls start their journey co-educationally in Nursery and Juniors, separate into single-sex environments for their crucial Senior School years and come back together for a co-educational Sixth Form. This year brings major milestones that reinforce our commitment to educational excellence. Following our integration into the LTC Education Group in February, Claires Court enters a stable, secure, and well-resourced future. This strong backing allows us to invest in our pupils’ learning environments—most notably through the relocation of our Nursery School to the primary Junior School site this September. This purposeful move provides a safe, seamless foundation class experience where our youngest early learners can play, grow, and naturally transition into full-time schooling alongside the juniors.

At Claires Court, we treat every child as an individual, stretching their capabilities and supporting their personal wellbeing. To further recognise regional talent and reward high potential, competitive scholarships providing up to 50% fee remission are now available across Years 3, 5, 7, and 12. Beyond the classroom, we offer a diverse cocurricular programme of music, drama, outdoor learning, and a strong sporting pedigree. We pair inclusive participation with elite athletic pathways. Our Henley-winning rowing programme, integrated from Year 8 with Maidenhead Boat Club, offers premier Thames-side coaching, while our rugby pathway thrives via partnership with Bath Rugby Club. From competitive arenas to creative clubs and field trips, pupils build lifelong resilience, teamwork, and leadership. Whether your child is taking their first steps in early years or preparing to springboard into higher education and beyond, Claires Court offers the ultimate pathway to thrive. cross Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire, families are increasingly seeking opportunities that help their children build confidence, creativity and future‑ready skills. As technology continues to reshape the world around us, the ability to understand coding, robotics and artificial intelligence is becoming a defining part of modern learning. Code Ninjas — with centres in Borehamwood, St Albans and Amersham — is leading this movement, offering young learners a space where innovation feels exciting, accessible and full of possibility. At its core, Code Ninjas is more than a tech programme. It is a place where children aged 5–14 discover what they can achieve when they are encouraged to explore, experiment and create. Through hands‑on projects in coding, robotics and AI, children learn to think critically, solve problems and express ideas in ways that feel both contemporary and meaningful. The Borehamwood centre, based at the prestigious Haberdashers’ Boys’ School, is recognised as one of the top Code Ninjas centres in the UK. Here, children immerse themselves in advanced programmes spanning Coding, Robotics and Artificial Intelligence. Working with LEGO and VEX Robotics, they design, build and refine projects that mirror real‑world engineering — experiences that ignite imagination while building genuine technical capability. In Buckinghamshire, the Amersham centre has found a new home at Heatherton School, where AI, Coding and LEGO Robotics sessions run every weekend. This dedicated weekend hub offers families consistency and depth, giving children the chance to develop their skills 52 AUGUST 2026

over time in an environment that feels both nurturing and aspirational. The St Albans centre, located at Verulam School in Hertfordshire, is entering an exciting new phase with the introduction of AI programmes for learners aged 10 and above. These sessions help children understand the emerging technologies shaping their world — and empower them to become active participants in it. Across all centres, children follow a structured pathway that grows with them. Younger learners begin with early STEM foundations, while older students progress to game development, robotics engineering and AI concepts. Each step is designed to build confidence, resilience and a sense of achievement — qualities that extend far beyond the classroom. To mark the start of the new school year, families enrolling onto a Coding programme in September will receive one month of free access to either the AI Academy or LEGO Robotics (depending on age) across any of our three locations — Amersham, Borehamwood and St Albans. In a world where digital literacy is becoming essential, Code Ninjas offers something rare: a place where children can explore technology with joy, creativity and purpose. It is a space where they learn not just to use technology, but to shape it — and in doing so, discover the limitless potential within themselves. THE ONE THING TO CHECK BEFORE APPLYING SPF THIS SUMMER

S

ummer is finally here, and with the warm weather set to continue across the UK and the peak holiday season just around the corner, it’s safe to say that demand for SPF products is soaring. UK beauty retailer M&S reports, in the last month alone, there have been 656,000 Google searches for SPF products in the UK. While many may be looking to purchase new SPF products this summer, others are reaching for products they already have. However, beauty experts at M&S are urging people to check this one thing on their old SPF products before using them. Viral TikTok urges Britons to check this one thing before applying SPF this summer A TikTok video posted by @dr.nora.uk has recently gone viral, receiving over 275,000 views. In the video, Dr Nora, explains how someone contacted her asking for advice, after they’d used an SPF50 sun cream but still managed to significantly burn. In the video, Dr Nora, explains exactly why this happened and how to prevent it. In agreement with Dr Nora, Eva Ocampo, Beauty Tech Lead at M&S comments: “If you’re contemplating using an SPF which you’ve had for a while, be sure to turn it around and check the back of the product. “On the back of the product, there should be a PAO (Period After Opening) logo which is a small pot icon with a figure in it e.g. 12M. “The purpose of this is to determine how long

the product remains safe and suitable after the consumer opening accounting for contamination risks, repeated exposure to air and the handling and storage of the product. For SPF products, this also considers potential loss of SPF performance after opening, the oxidation of certain UV filters and the stability of boosters and oxidants in the product. “If the product displays 12M, this means the product should not be used after 12 months from opening it. In this case, after 12 months, the UV filters have started to break down, no longer provide full protection from the sun. “For the best sun protection, we recommend starting each summer with a new SPF. Over time, UV filters can become less effective, particularly if a product has been opened and stored through changing temperatures. Using a fresh SPF each season helps ensure you’re getting the level of protection you expect when enjoying the sun.” marksandspencer.com

ARE YOU SUFFERING WITH KNEE PAIN? Redefining Treatment for Knee Osteoarthritis For many of the 8.5 million people in the UK living with knee osteoarthritis (OA), life is hampered by constant pain, limited mobility, and difficulty with simple, everyday tasks. But there’s hope with Arthrosamid® – the first and only permanent injectable treatment that is proven to maintain a significant, long-lasting reduction in knee OA pain – even four years post treatment. Experts are calling it a ‘game-changer’. People delay seeking help for knee pain, assuming it’s an unavoidable part of ageing. But Arthrosamid® offers patients a new pathway. Unlike traditional treatments, it’s proven to offer respite from knee osteoarthritis with a single treatment, and without the need for surgery. Knee OA: common causes and treatments Knee OA is a long-term condition where shock-absorbing cartilage is worn away, causing bones to rub together and the joint to become stiff, swollen, and painful. Despite OA being the most common type of arthritis and the fastest cause of disability worldwide, the treatment area has seen minimal progression in the last 20 years. With so little known about the exact causes of knee OA, a permanent cure has yet to be discovered. Many people find themselves in an ongoing cycle of treatments, such as painkillers, physiotherapy appointments and various knee joint injectables (e.g. steroids or hyaluronic acid). Despite providing some relief, the effects can often be relatively shortlived, leaving many fearing that knee replacement surgery is the only long-term answer. The emergence of Arthrosamid®, however, has been hailed by leading clinicians as an exciting development; the first and only injectable hydrogel that has been proven to help patients with knee osteoarthritis and offers a real alternative to surgery. How does Arthrosamid® work? Arthrosamid® is a hydrogel made up of 2.5 per cent cross-linked polyacrylamide and 97.5 per cent water. Arthrosamid® combines with the synovial tissue in the knee to form a permanent scaffold, and it’s this unique characteristic that provides a significant reduction in OA pain over a longer period - with one single treatment.

We understand what it means to provide exceptional resident care, every moment of the day.

Why Today’s Later Life Looks Different To How You Thought For many of us, thoughts of later life are shaped by outdated perceptions. We picture care as a compromise, a step away from independence, community, and the lifestyle we’ve always enjoyed. But what if it looked entirely different? Across Buckinghamshire, families are beginning to rethink what exceptional later living can be. They’re asking not just “What care is available?” but “How can Mum continue living the life she loves?” or “How can Dad remain connected to the people and passions that matter most?” The answer lies in a new approach – one that focuses on wellbeing, choice, and meaningful experiences. At Haddenham Park Care Home & Apartments, in Buckinghamshire, later life is being reimagined through thoughtfully designed spaces, innovative technology, and a genuine sense of belonging. From elegant cafés and wellness facilities to rooftop sensory gardens and community events, every aspect of daily life is centred around helping people continue being themselves. For some, that means enjoying an independent lifestyle in a luxury apartment with the reassurance that care can evolve as needs change. For others, it means specialist residential, nursing, dementia, respite, or day care, delivered with compassion and dignity. Technology also plays an important role. Innovations such as voice-activated support, digital care planning, and intelligent falls prevention systems create greater independence and peace of mind, giving families confidence that their loved ones are safe while preserving choice and autonomy. Perhaps most importantly, later life doesn’t happen behind closed doors. Whether it’s attending a community coffee morning, joining a support group, hosting family celebrations in a private dining room, or welcoming grandchildren for an overnight stay in the guest suite, connection remains at the heart of everything. Because the question is no longer “When is the right time for care?” It’s “What kind of life do you want to live next?”

From Hospital to Home: The Benefits of Respite Care C

oming home after a hospital stay can be a huge relief, but it can also bring unexpected challenges. Even after a planned operation, everyday tasks can suddenly feel difficult, from preparing meals and getting dressed to managing medication, shopping or simply getting around the house safely. This is where short-term respite care can make the transition home much easier. At Ashridge Home Care, we provide tailored respite care designed around the individual and their recovery. Support might be for just a few hours a day, for several days or weeks, or include short-term live-in care while someone regains their confidence and independence. The aim is not to take away independence, but to help people get back on their feet safely, in familiar surroundings. Our carers can help with personal care, meal preparation, household tasks and mobility, while supporting an individual to follow their recovery plan and work alongside other professionals such as physiotherapists and occupational therapists. Respite care can also be invaluable for families. Being a family carer can be incredibly rewarding, but it can also be physically and emotionally demanding. Sometimes what is needed is simply a little time away – to visit friends or loved ones, attend an appointment, go on holiday or have a

proper night’s sleep, knowing that the person they care for is safe and well supported at home. Importantly, respite does not have to mean a long-term commitment or a move into residential care. It can be a gentle introduction to professional care at home, providing support when it is needed and reducing the pressure on families. Every situation is different. One client left this review of their experience: “My experience was excellent and my anticipated needs following leg surgery were well assessed. The two carers were punctual, cheerful and kind – they also accompanied me on walks to encourage increased mobility. They were always very friendly and sociable and always brightened up our day.” The right respite care can provide more than practical help. It can give families reassurance, confidence and breathing space – helping people remain at home while ensuring everyone gets the support they need. www.ashridgehomecare.co.uk

thoughtfully designed building can do far more than add space to a property. It can bring generations of a family closer together, create a peaceful place to work, welcome guests in comfort, or open new possibilities for a country estate or hospitality business. Lodrix creates bespoke timber-framed garden rooms, residential annexes and lodges designed around the way each client wants to live. Based in Buckinghamshire, the company combines traditional timber craftsmanship with modern construction methods, premium materials and contemporary architectural design. Every Lodrix project begins with a conversation. Rather than asking clients to select a standard building from a catalogue, the team takes time

74 AUGUST 2026

“From an elegant garden office or private studio to a fully equipped residential annexe or substantial country lodge, each building is individually considered”

to understand the property, the intended use of the space and the atmosphere the client wants to create. From an elegant garden office or private studio to a fully equipped residential annexe or substantial country lodge, each building is individually considered. For some families, that may mean creating a warm and independent home for a parent while allowing them to remain close to children and grandchildren. For others, it could be a guest suite, a place for adult children to stay, a wellness room, a home gym or a quiet retreat overlooking the garden. Lodrix also works with landowners, developers, holiday parks and hospitality businesses seeking distinctive accommodation and leisure spaces.

“The company’s philosophy is expressed simply: beautifully crafted, made for life” At the heart of every project is a properly engineered timber frame. Timber has been used to create enduring British buildings for centuries, and Lodrix brings that tradition into a modern setting. Its structures are designed for strength, longevity and year-round comfort, with highperformance insulation and carefully specified wall, floor and roof systems. Natural materials are central to the Lodrix aesthetic. Western Red Cedar and other premium timber cladding options allow a building to sit comfortably within its surroundings, while large areas of glazing introduce natural light and connect the interior to the landscape. Depending on the project, clients can choose aluminium glazing systems, hardwood decking, vaulted ceilings, exposed timber beams, rooflights and a wide range of internal finishes. The result is not simply a functional extra room, but a beautifully proportioned building with the character and presence of a permanent part of the property. Lodrix recently demonstrated this approach at The Game Fair 2026 at Ragley Hall, where the company constructed and presented a full-size timber-framed lodge. The building featured natural cedar cladding, aluminium glazing, Balau hardwood decking, a dramatic vaulted ceiling, exposed structural timber and a fully finished interior. The lodge was designed to show what can be achieved when architectural ambition, craftsmanship and practical construction come together. Its generous open-plan layout can be retained as an impressive leisure, entertaining or working space, or adapted to include a bedroom and en-suite accommodation.

Lodrix uses a combination of off-site preparation and skilled on-site assembly. This approach provides greater control over workmanship while helping to reduce disruption at the client’s property. The company can manage the complete journey from initial consultation and concept development through to construction, delivery and installation, with planning and technical support arranged where required. Although each project is bespoke, the process remains personal and straightforward. Following an initial discussion, Lodrix reviews the proposed site, access, intended use, approximate dimensions, preferred style and budget. The team can then recommend the most suitable next steps and develop a design and specification around the client’s requirements. For Lodrix, luxury is not simply about size or expensive finishes. It is found in the way natural light enters a room, in the warmth and texture of real timber, in considered proportions and in the knowledge that the building has been made specifically for its owners. The company’s philosophy is expressed simply: beautifully crafted, made for life. Whether the requirement is a peaceful garden room, a comfortable annexe for a loved one, an architectural lodge or a bespoke leisure building, Lodrix aims to create a space that feels both distinctive and completely at home in its surroundings. Private consultations and site visits are available by appointment. To discuss a project or arrange an initial consultation, visit www.lodrix.co.uk, email info@lodrix.co.uk or call +44 7498 904997.

Indoor Pools, Thoughtfully Designed Planning the Perfect Pool with Origin Award-winning Indoor Pool Design, Construction and Aftercare.

L

uxury home renovation has evolved. Rather than moving, more homeowners are choosing to invest in the homes they already love, creating spaces that better reflect the way they want to live now and in the future. As part of this shift, indoor pools are becoming an increasingly important feature of wholehome renovation projects. No longer viewed as a standalone addition, they’re being designed alongside the architecture, interior and landscape to create homes that are more versatile and better connected. That same thinking is transforming the relationship between the home and the garden. Instead of existing as separate spaces, they’re being designed to work together. Carefully planned landscapes and terraces become outdoor living spaces, with views considered as carefully as the interiors themselves, creating a seamless connection between inside and out throughout the seasons. Indoor pools fit naturally within this approach. When considered early in the design process, they become part of the home rather than an addition to it. When it comes to indoor pools, planning ahead also creates opportunities to maximise the space. Features such as a moving floor can transform the pool into a multifunctional room for entertaining or family life when not in use, ensuring the room works just as beautifully beyond the moments spent swimming.

80 AUGUST 2026

At Origin, every project begins with a conversation with our team of experts. Whether you’re looking for a contemporary pavilion with uninterrupted garden views, a traditional barninspired pool house nestled within the countryside or a sensitive addition to a listed property, each space is designed around you and your home. For over 40 years, Origin has worked alongside homeowners to create bespoke indoor pools that complement their homes. By considering every detail from the outset, they deliver spaces that are not only beautiful to look at, but a pleasure to use every day. Whether you’re at the beginning of a major renovation or simply exploring what’s possible, involving Origin early in the process opens up opportunities that may not be available later. The result is a space that feels beautifully connected to your home, garden and lifestyle. www.originpools.co.uk

A flooring business built by three. Back in 2014, Jason, Mike and Lisa brought their experience together and started Trio Flooring. The name reflected three people united by one belief: flooring should be fitted properly, explained clearly and chosen for real life, not just because it looks lovely on a small sample.

C

hoosing a floor can be complicated, but with the right company, it doesn’t need to be. That pale carpet might be beautiful, but will it still feel like a good idea after muddy shoes, children and a Labrador have passed over it? Can the wood flooring you love be used with underfloor heating? Will that LVT work in a busy kitchen? And how will the new floor meet the hallway tiles without creating an awkward step? Most of us wouldn’t think to ask these questions, but with more than 30 years of flooring experience, the Trio team knows exactly where potential problems can hide. They are often underneath the floor itself. Uneven surfaces, damp, old adhesive, cracked screed or different floor heights can affect the finish. It is tempting to think nobody will see underneath, but poor preparation has a habit of making itself known later. Your flooring is only as good as its foundations, which is why Trio’s fitters are trained in subfloor preparation and take the time to get it right. Then there is the choice. Visit the Medmenham showroom and Lisa, Amanda and Michelle will

help you narrow it down without making you feel you need a qualification in carpets first. Bring photographs, paint colours, fabric swatches or the saved image you have carried on your phone for six months. They will help you find something that suits the room, your budget and the way you live. Once fitting begins, Trio’s in-house team takes care of the details, from joining surfaces to creating hand-cut LVT borders and beautifully finished stair runners. Clear communication means you know what is happening and when. More than a decade after it began, Trio remains a personal, family-run business at heart: experienced enough to spot problems and thoughtful enough to make the whole process feel easy. More Than Maintenance

Creating Gardens That Flourish T he best gardens have something in common. They don’t simply look good for a few weeks each summer, they change with the seasons and reward their owners throughout the year. Behind every thriving garden is knowledge and an understanding of the space combined with regular care. Mimosa Garden Services is a Buckinghamshirebased horticultural business. We believe successful gardening starts with good planting foundations and continues through regular maintenance. Led by a qualified horticulturist with more than 25 years of hands-on experience, Mimosa Garden Services combines horticultural expertise with practical garden care to create outdoor spaces that continue to improve year after year. Gardens are becoming increasingly important as places to relax, entertain and reconnect with nature. Rather than following passing trends, more homeowners are looking for planting that offers year-round interest, supports wildlife and suits the character of their property. Achieving that balance requires careful planning as well as ongoing care. Every outdoor space has its own personality, whatever its size. Often, the greatest transformation doesn’t come from starting again, but from an understanding of what is already there. Pruning, considered planting and regular maintenance can restore structure, improve plant health and create a garden that develops naturally with each passing season.

For Mimosa Garden Services, reliability is as important as horticultural expertise. Building long-term relationships with clients allows gardens to be cared for consistently, with each season bringing new opportunities to improve planting, enhance colour and maintain healthy growth. That attention to detail is reflected in our many Google reviews and client recommendations that praise the quality of our work and the knowledge, professionalism and dependable service behind it. A garden is one of the few parts of a home that is always changing. With expert care, it becomes more than an attractive outdoor space – it becomes somewhere to enjoy family life, welcome wildlife and appreciate the changing seasons. It’s this longterm approach that helps gardens flourish for years to come. www.mimosagardenservices.co.uk

Plan Ahead for Comfort Why the Best Time to Upgrade Is Before Something Goes Wrong

M

ost homeowners only think about their heating or cooling when something stops working. Unfortunately, that’s exactly when choices become limited, costs can increase, and the stress begins. Every autumn, as temperatures start to fall, heating engineers see a surge in emergency boiler breakdowns. Many of these boilers have been showing signs of age for months, but because they were still working, replacing them slipped down the priority list. The result is often an urgent decision made at the least convenient time, with fewer installation appointments available and little opportunity to research the best long-term solution.

88 AUGUST 2026

The same pattern is now becoming increasingly common with home air conditioning. During the hottest weeks of summer, demand rises dramatically. Manufacturers can temporarily run short of popular models, installation schedules quickly fill up, and homeowners who wanted to enjoy a cool, comfortable home during the heatwave often find themselves waiting until it’s almost over. The best time to replace a boiler is before you need one. The best time to install air conditioning is before the temperatures soar. Planning ahead gives you time to consider the right system for your home, compare the available options, and schedule installation at a time that suits you rather than in the middle of an emergency. At AC Heating & Gas, we help homeowners across Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire make informed decisions about the comfort of their homes. As a family-run business, we pride ourselves on honest advice, meticulous workmanship, and treating every property with the same care and respect we would our own. Whether you’re considering replacing an ageing boiler before winter or thinking about air conditioning for next summer, a little forward planning can make all the difference. Your home will be ready when you need it most—and you’ll have the peace of mind that comes from making the decision on your terms, not because circumstances forced your hand. www.acheatingandgas.co.uk

Linsey Evans Garden Design L

insey Evans has been designing gardens in Berkshire, the Home Counties and London for 22 years. She has particular expertise in working on sloping sites, and extensive knowledge of the technical aspects of garden construction. Linsey creates bespoke contemporary gardens to the highest possible standard for clients who want something special. Linsey’s focus is on creating outdoor spaces that function as an extension to the house, with a seamless indoor/outdoor flow. A strong structure to the hard landscape provides a cohesive link between house and garden, and a skilful combination of plants gives a soft, elegant aesthetic. The best time to commission the garden design is when your architect is designing the house. The garden designer and architect can work together to ensure a seamless flow between the house and garden. Doing things this way means your home and garden will be completed on a similar timescale, so you can relax and enjoy your dream home and garden together.

90 AUGUST 2026

The garden’s proportions should complement your house’s design. Using elements of the building design or its dominant features as a basis for the design creates an effortless connection. Good design ensures your garden is cohesive, feels comfortable to spend time in, and is easy to navigate. Strategically placed destinations and focal points, such as seating, sculptures or garden rooms, help you achieve this and allow you to use all of your garden, so you can make the most of your full plot, not just the area around the house. It is essential to allow sufficient budget and time when considering a professionally designed garden. The garden will function as an additional room, so expect the budget to be the same as building an extension to your home. If you live in a conservation area or have a heritage property, you will need to get planning permission for any big changes, and Linsey will be able to help you with this.

A Healthier Home:

Interior design for better well-being

T

he human mind is an incredibly powerful, insightful and opulent component within our biological composition. Often neglected, its nurturing takes a back seat to the everyday distractions which misleadingly seem more important. Our mental state is a crucial factor in the mechanism of our movements, actions and the way in which we approach life’s obstacles. There are many ways in which our mental agility can be altered to determine conflicting outcomes of neutral situations. When our mind’s equilibrium is affected, so are our actions. It’s therefore within our best interest to invest the time into protecting and stimulating our brains at all times to ensure that they are healthy and elevated, regardless of the negativity that may surround us. Many factors contribute to our health, happiness and emotional well-being. From the types of food we consume, the amount of exercise we practice, to the types of people we choose to surround ourselves with. All of which contribute to our own personal journey of contentment. However, one of the fundamental and often

92 AUGUST 2026

underestimated factors is the environment we choose to situate ourselves in. Scientifically proven, our living space can influence our emotional state of mind in both a negative and positive manner. Interior design can have the power to systematically improve our moods through clever use of colours, fabrics and furniture feng shui. Tranquil shades, stimulating surface textures and resourceful organisational units can all contribute to the make-up of a healthier habitat, resulting in a happier and more positive you. Colour Co-Ordinated: When it comes to colour,

“Scientifically proven, our living space can influence our emotional state of mind in both a negative and positive manner”

choosing the correct kind is essential to achieving a positive ambience within a home. Colours visually stimulate us, causing brain cells to react and triggering a torrent of unleashed emotions. Not only do different colours impact our feelings, but the amount of exposure we have to certain shades can also affect the chemical imbalance within our brains. Incorporating colour into a living space should be done with precision and attention to detail. Avoid overindulgence of certain shades and misuse of garish tones, as they can hinder the potential of a prosperous space. Tranquillity can be achieved through clever use of soft serene shades. Incorporating pastel tones such as blues, greens and lilacs into a contemporary living space can result in a calmer and more relaxed environment. This clever colour scheme can be transitioned throughout the home, although it is particularly recommended within areas intended for recreational rest. Organised Interiors: In life, organisation gives us the ability to take control of situations in order to attain positive experiences. It can give us a clear direction and thought process of obstacles ahead, making life a more pleasurable journey. When it comes to our living space, organising physical objects can lead to clearer paths both in reality and within our minds. Structuring a household by decluttering and strategically tidying can help with stress reduction, productivity and emotional elevation. Stylish contemporary sideboards, offer an elegant way to keep living spaces organised and clutter-free. Visually striking on the outside and highly practical within, they provide valuable storage while contributing to a calmer, more

considered home. Let There Be Light: Another contributing factor that has a negative impact on our emotional state of mind is a lack of light. Dark and dingy spaces can psychologically affect our mood, causing it to go into a spiral and effectively weaken. Modern lighting can play a vital role when it comes to elevating interior ambience. Incorporating an array of lighting solutions within your home can effectively improve moods while visually enhancing interiors. Let magical designs guide you out of the darkness and into a more uplifting setting. As visually striking as it is functional, its reflective structure and multitude of light sources cast a warm, radiant glow, instantly brightening any living space. A Breath Of Fresh Air: While we’re exploring how improving things externally can help internally, let’s look beyond the four walls of our abodes. To truly turn a house into a home every inch must feel as if it were purpose-built... this includes the garden. Outdoor spaces are a place to breathe and enjoy nature’s natural calming properties, setting your exterior up to accommodate as much time spent in it as possible, while doing things usually reserved for inside is a bona fide way of improving your experience. chaplins.co.uk AUGUST 2026 93

The garden you’ve always wanted may not be the one you imagined

T

here comes a point when many homeowners look out at their garden and realise something isn’t quite working; the garden feels uninspiring and unwelcoming. There are some mature plants, perhaps a patio and a bbq has been added over the years, and there may even be some lovely individual features. Yet somehow the space never quite invites you outside. It looks pleasant enough, but it doesn’t feel like somewhere you naturally want to spend time. More and more, we’re finding that people aren’t simply asking for a ‘nice’ garden. They’re looking for somewhere that helps them slow down, entertain with ease, enjoy family life and reconnect with nature - without really thinking about why it works. That’s where thoughtful design makes all the difference. Rather than beginning with plants or paving, every project starts by getting to know the people who will use the space and what inspires them

94 AUGUST 2026

“Working alongside trusted specialist landscapers, we guide clients from the first conversation through to a completed garden that feels entirely personal”

visually. We talk about how they live, the gardens and places they admire, and the atmosphere they want to create. How do you move through the garden? Are you a sun worshipper or do you prefer to chill in the shade? Where might you enjoy a quiet coffee, gather with friends or simply pause for a few moments at the end of the day? The answers shape every decision that follows. Structure, planting, materials and carefully framed views are composed together to create gardens that feel calm, balanced and effortless. Spaces flow naturally from one to another, encouraging exploration while remaining comfortable to live with throughout the seasons. At Richard Rogers Designs, we believe exceptional gardens are created through thoughtful design, careful collaboration and meticulous attention to detail. Working alongside trusted specialist landscapers, we oversee the journey from concept to completion, ensuring every design is realised with the quality and craftsmanship it deserves. We love creating that unmistakable ‘wow’ moment when a client first steps into their completed garden. But the real measure of success comes later, when they tell us it’s become their favourite place to spend time. Because the most successful gardens aren’t defined by individual features. They’re defined by how they make you feel. www.richardrogersdesigns.com

FULLY APPRECIATE YOUR ART WITH GOOD PICTURE LIGHTING (2,700K is ideal) Colour Rendering Index: A high CRI is required to bring out the rich colours, definition & brush strokes in the paintings (insist on >95 CRI). Head Size, Arm Position & LED Spacing and Lensing: These 3 dynamics work together to gain the best coverage across the canvas. Using a small head will need long arms and correctly lensed LEDs. Using a larger head, the arms can be shorter with different LED lensing. Arm sizes must be calculated to give the correct elevation & projection for the head size. Swivel knuckles should be present to gain the desired head angle to remove any glare. Lighting Levels: Each picture light should be supplied with its own dedicated dimmer to ensure correct levels are achieved. Over lighting can be just as bad as under lighting, and a painting’s ideal light level will depend on its content, colours and brush strokes.

For nearly four decades, Ruislip Windows & Doors has embodied this understated excellence. Established in 1986 as a familyrun business, the company has grown into one of the most trusted names across Hertfordshire, Middlesex, and surrounding counties. Originally founded in general building, Ruislip soon developed a clear focus on windows, doors, and conservatories. Today, the company is known for its reliability, expert guidance, and high-quality installations. Instead, clients receive honest advice and thoughtful support from a team dedicated to helping homeowners make confident choices.

The Art of Planning a Beautiful Kitchen

T

he kitchen plays an important role in everyday life, so reimagining it is an opportunity to transform the space and the way a home feels and functions. More than a place to cook, today’s kitchen is the heart of the home, a space for gathering, entertaining and everyday living. For Ridgeway Interiors, one of the region’s leading kitchen specialists, successful projects begin with understanding how the space needs to work.

Experience Design First-Hand A showroom visit brings ideas to life. Materials, finishes and craftsmanship are best appreciated in person, from the texture of timber to the precision of contemporary cabinetry. It is also an opportunity to explore ideas with experienced designers and discover solutions tailored to your home.

Start With How You Live Good kitchen design starts with asking the right questions. Does the existing layout suit the way you cook and entertain? Is there enough storage? Could everyday frustrations be solved through better planning? Identifying what works, and what could work better, creates a clear brief for your new kitchen.

Gather Inspiration Browse completed projects on the Ridgeway Interiors website and social media, alongside Houzz and Pinterest. Whether you prefer timeless Shaker cabinetry, contemporary handleless design or something bespoke, gathering inspiration helps refine your vision.

Seek Professional Guidance Online inspiration is invaluable, but professional expertise can unlock possibilities you may not have considered. With more than 18 years’ experience and over 1,300 kitchens designed, Ridgeway Interiors considers layout, workflow, storage, lighting and the relationship with the wider home to create spaces that are both beautiful and intuitive to use.

Design for the Future The best kitchens are designed around the people who use them, balancing style with practical considerations for cooking, entertaining, family life and storage. With careful planning, expert guidance and thoughtful design, a new kitchen can become a space that works beautifully today and for years to come.

MAKING A GREAT FIRST IMPRESSION C

hoosing door furniture for your Entrance Door can be quite daunting, particularly as it creates that all important, great first impression. A good starting place is to consider the size and design of your door and the space available to position the hardware. Then it is all about balance, proportion and of course functionality. “Helping people to furnish their front door is something I really enjoy. Working with the owner to create a look that marries the fabric of the property with their personality and style is really key and delivers beautiful results” Jayne says. Richard continues “The finish is also a key consideration, not just for how it looks aesthetically, but also for longevity. If your property is near the coast then choosing a finish that will stand up to the harsher environment is critical to the door furniture looking good years
