Garden glow-up or neighbour showdown?

What you need to know before starting your garden project

Starting a garden project can be exciting, but it’s important not to overlook potential legal issues that may arise if matters aren’t addressed early.

B P Collins’ property disputes team recommends taking time to understand your responsibilities before starting work to help avoid unnecessary complications later that can delay completion of your project and put your budget for the works in jeopardy.

One of the most common sources of disagreement between neighbours involves boundary features such as fences, hedges and walls. Disputes between neighbours are often caused by a simple lack of communication. If you’re planning changes, for example, removing an overgrown hedge and installing a fence, it’s best to speak with your neighbour beforehand. Agreeing in advance the work to be carried out can help to maintain a good relationship and stop disputes from arising.

Who owns the fence?

A frequent question is how to determine which fence belongs to which property. Many assume there is a standard rule, such as each homeowner being responsible for a particular side, but this is not the case. The most reliable way to establish ownership is by checking the property’s title register, available from HM Land Registry. Sometimes the register will clearly state ownership, but if it does not, it’s wise to seek legal advice before carrying out any work. Acting without confirmation could lead to a dispute.

In some situations, a fence may be jointly owned, meaning both neighbours share responsibility for its upkeep. In these cases, it is particularly important to consult with your neighbour before making any changes as you cannot act unilaterally – you don’t own the fence outright.

Another concern is whether you can make changes to your side of a fence, such as attaching items, painting it, or carrying out repairs. Again, this depends on ownership. If the fence belongs to your neighbour, you should not take any of these actions without their permission.

If a fence belonging to your neighbour is in poor condition, you may wonder whether you can require them to carry out repairs. In some cases, this may be possible. There could be covenants in the title deeds requiring the neighbour to maintain the fence (although you would need to confirm that these covenants remain enforceable). Alternatively, if a fence in disrepair is causing damage to your property or interfering with your enjoyment of it, you may have grounds for legal action to compel it is repaired.

What height should your fence be?

When installing or altering fences, there are also rules around height. In many cases, fences can be erected without planning permission under permitted development rights, but there are limits. For fences next to a road or footpath in a front garden, the maximum height is typically one metre. In back gardens, fences separating properties can generally be up to two metres high, including any trellis. These measurements are taken from ground level, which is why standard fence panels are designed not to exceed this limit.

If you wish to install a fence taller than these restrictions allow, you will need to apply for planning permission. It’s also advisable to discuss your plans with your neighbour beforehand to gain their support or ensure they won’t

object. If you proceed without permission and exceed the limits, your neighbour could report the issue to the local authority, which has the power to enforce planning rules. This could result in you having to remove the fence, wasting time and money.

In addition to planning permission, other approvals may be required depending on your circumstances. For example, listed buildings, leasehold properties, or certain works may involve additional permissions or compliance with building regulations.

How to approach your dispute

Neighbour disputes often centre on fences, boundary positions, overhanging trees or roots, and concerns about privacy or light. If a dispute arises, the first step is to have a calm and respectful conversation with your neighbour – it is always better if the dispute can be resolved without the involvement of solicitors.  If an agreement cannot be reached, it is then best to speak to a solicitor about your options. Mediation by an independent professional may offer a solution without formal legal action. Alternative, court proceedings may be considered, but only as a last resort. If the dispute cannot be resolved, make sure you keep a record of all communication with your neighbour — text messages, emails or notes of conversations — as your solicitor will need this information to assist with resolving the same.

Spring is one of Amersham’s most enchanting moments -  and now officially celebrated too, with Amersham recognised as the best town in the UK 2025 by Britain in Bloom.  As the blossoms begin to unfurl across the town and surrounding lanes, everything feels lighter, brighter, and full of promise. This season brings a wave of new openings too, with restaurants and coffee spots ready to welcome visitors looking to soak up the atmosphere. Take a gentle stroll through Old Amersham, enjoy the fresh air, and discover tucked-away corners that are already coming alive with colour, conversation, and that relaxed, villagemeets-market-town charm.

From 12–14 June, Handmade Oxford returns to Waterperry Gardens, where over 175 exhibitors gather for its sixth edition — each bringing with them not simply objects, but a sense of heritage, narrative and purpose. In a world increasingly defined by speed and uniformity, this is an event that celebrates patience, individuality and the enduring value of things made by hand.

Set within the beauty of early summer at Waterperry Gardens, visitors are naturally drawn into conversation — discovering not just what is made, but the story behind it. Here, craft is not only seen, but understood

Tucked away in the Buckinghamshire countryside lies a destination that feels less like a traditional day out and more like stepping into a living painting. Stowe House and Gardens is not simply a historic estate; it is an immersive journey through art, nature, and British heritage. With sweeping vistas, classical temples, and centuries of stories woven into every pathway, it remains one of the most extraordinary places to visit in England — and a perfect feature for any lifestyle traveller seeking beauty, calm, and inspiration.

Unlike formal gardens bursting with flowerbeds, Stowe offers something far more ambitious. Created largely during the 18th century, the gardens are widely regarded as one of the most significant examples of the English landscape garden — a style that reshaped how people viewed nature itself. Instead of rigid symmetry, designers crafted rolling lawns, reflective lakes, and carefully framed views that appear effortlessly natural, yet are meticulously planned.

Chiltern Arts Festival 15–23 May 2026

This May, Chiltern Arts invites you to lose yourself in the sounds of the world around you through concerts, walks and readings that are inspired by nature. The 2026 Festival is a chance to take time to slow down, to find new ways to look and listen and to reconnect with nature. Join Chiltern Arts in stunning spots across the Chiltern Hills with events that explore flora and fauna, landscapes and the changing seasons through the combination of music, words and movement.

Don’t miss Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony (conducted by George Vass), Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23 (Anjulie Chen), a virtuosic piano duet arrangement of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring (Charles Owen & Katya Apekisheva) or Philip Glass’ energetic Saxophone Quartet performed by the Ferio Saxophone Quartet and

accompanied by stunning contemporary dance from Dew Dance. Learn of Telemann’s love of gardens with baroque quartet Ensemble Hesperi (and enjoy a cream tea on the riverside terrace at the prestigious Leander Club in Henley); hear Benjamin Britten’s playful Five Flower Songs at the centre of The Marian Consort’s programme that combines Renaissance and contemporary choral music; and experience meditative candlelit moments with Ludovico Einaudi, Arvo Pärt, Gabriel Fauré and François Couperin arranged for harp (Oliver Wass) and saxophone (Huw Wiggin).

A dawn call from solo French horn (Ben Goldscheider) atop Whiteleaf Hill opens the second iteration of Chiltern Arts’ Dawn to Dusk event, with three concerts shaping your day, including poetry, horn and harp (Olivia

Jageurs), and a recital of masterpieces for horn and piano (Richard Uttley). Nature-inspired writings, both in poetry and prose, make appearances throughout the Festival, with words by the likes of Emily Dickinson, Jane Hirshfield and Jackie Morris blended in amongst musical programmes, or spoken on walks in ancient woodland. In Marlow, actor Alex Jennings (The Crown & The Lady in the Van) winds words about water through a musical programme from Fenella Humphreys (violin) and Ensemble Perpetuo. In a programme that is full of hope and heartbreak, hear the poignant pairing of Shostakovich’s Eighth String Quartet (Gildas String Quartet) with Christopher Tin’s breathtaking choral elegy The Lost Birds, performed here by Echo Vocal Ensemble in an exquisite chamber arrangement.

The third of three walking opportunities during the festival, Sing the Trees with Echo Vocal Ensemble offers the chance to hear choral music beneath the leafy canopy of Penn Wood. A partnership with the Berks, Bucks and Oxon Wildlife Trust (BBOWT) means many events have local wildlife experts on hand; and Growing Bright craft workshops at College Lake (Tring) provide an opportunity for everyone to get hands-on with nature.

STOWE HOUSE AND GARDENS: A Timeless Escape into England’s Grandest Landscape

Walking through Stowe feels cinematic. Wide avenues open suddenly onto vast panoramas, while hidden paths lead to unexpected architectural treasures. The National Trust describes the estate as “gardening on the grandest

scale,” and it’s an accurate phrase — the gardens stretch across hundreds of acres, inviting visitors to slow down and explore at their own pace. Comfortable shoes are essential; this is not a quick stroll but an experience meant to unfold gradually.

What makes Stowe truly fascinating is that it was never just decorative. The gardens were designed as a political and philosophical landscape, filled with meaning for those who knew how to read it. During its Georgian heyday, the Temple-Grenville family employed leading architects and landscape designers to create a space rich in symbolism, classical references, and moral ideas.

Across the grounds, visitors encounter temples and monuments inspired by ancient Greece and Rome. Structures such as the Temple of Ancient Virtue or the Temple of

British Worthies were intended to celebrate ideals of leadership, patriotism, and wisdom. Each viewpoint was carefully positioned to evoke reflection — turning a walk into an intellectual as well as visual journey.

In the 18th century, Stowe became so influential that it was considered an essential stop on the Grand Tour of England, attracting international visitors and inspiring landscape design across Europe and America.

While the gardens often take centre stage, Stowe House itself adds another layer of fascination. Built and expanded over centuries, the house became a powerful symbol of political influence and artistic ambition during Britain’s Georgian period. Renowned architects and designers contributed to its development, shaping interiors and surroundings that reflected classical ideals of beauty and order.

Today, ongoing restoration efforts continue to revive the house’s historic splendour, allowing visitors to appreciate how architecture and landscape were originally conceived as one unified vision. The estate was designed not merely as a residence but as a complete artistic statement — house and garden working together to impress, inspire, and educate.

In a world dominated by busy schedules and digital distractions, Stowe offers something increasingly rare: space. Vast open lawns, wooded valleys, and tranquil lakes create a peaceful atmosphere that encourages mindfulness without ever feeling staged.

Unlike crowded tourist hotspots, the scale of the gardens means visitors can easily find quiet corners to pause, picnic, or simply admire the view. Seasonal changes add further charm — spring blossoms soften the classical architecture,

summer brings lush greenery, autumn transforms the landscape into warm golds and reds, and winter reveals dramatic silhouettes against wide skies.

“Walking through Stowe feels cinematic. Wide avenues open suddenly onto vast panoramas, while hidden paths lead to unexpected architectural treasures”

Families, walkers, photographers, and history lovers all find something to enjoy here, making it a versatile destination suited to many styles of travel.

Stowe’s story is also one of resilience. After periods of extravagance and financial decline in the 19th century, the estate faced uncertainty before preservation efforts ensured its survival. Today, the National Trust cares for the gardens, allowing modern visitors to experience a place that once shaped European garden design and cultural taste.

For lifestyle travellers seeking experiences rather than attractions, Stowe offers a rare balance: culture, beauty, and tranquillity in equal measure. It is a place where history unfolds gently with every step — and where visitors leave not just with photographs, but with a renewed appreciation for landscape, design, and the art of slowing down.

At Stowe, the journey is the destination.

The Melting Epidemic

Across the antiques world, an enormous number of historic items are vanishing. As precious-metal prices rise, many are funnelling everything straight into the melting pot. Objects made by long-closed artisans, gifted for life events, or carried through entire careers are being reduced to bullion.

It happens to pieces we see and handle here at The Antique Collective every week: an Edwardian gold brooch with painstaking detail; a silver tussiemussie from a wedding long gone by; a pocket watch whose movement still ticks with diligence. These things were meant to last, and yet they are increasingly judged only by weight.

When an item arrives at The Antique Collective, it begins with a close examination of its hallmarks, makers, construction, and condition. Many objects reveal far more interest than anyone expects: regional craftsmanship, unusual design, period engineering, or components that can be repaired and kept working long after their first owner is gone.

“In a world that increasingly values cash over conservation, taking the time to understand an object properly is becoming rare”

Preserving these details matters. A piece crafted a hundred years ago has survived by care, and allowing it to continue its life, whether in use, in collection or through careful restoration, keeps that chain of history unbroken. Of course, not every item can be saved; some are simply too worn to function. Even then, parts often continue their usefulness in the repair of other period pieces, extending life rather than erasing it.

In a world that increasingly values cash over conservation, taking the time to understand an object properly is becoming rare. But it is still entirely possible - and in our view, entirely worth it.

If you have inherited items or pieces you’re unsure about, you’re welcome to visit our Chorleywood shop for a clear, expert valuation based on real historical and intrinsic value. We take the time to look properly, because the past deserves more than a melting pot.

See you next month, Iris

CHEF LAURIE GEAR

April Recipe & Kitchen News

For this month’s recipe I have chosen a delicious warming soup. April catches the first of the tender new nettle shoots. Nettles are such a treat and don’t last long. When they arrive in early spring try to get them at their most prime, before they go to seed and get too rough and woody to enjoy. These are best harvested away from the roadside or walked verges so look for marshy wet places, alongside fields and moist woodlands. When harvesting nettles, remember to wear gloves and take scissors to snip off the tender top shoots. When lightly steamed

to remove their sting, nettles are reminiscent of spinach. They make a delicious earthy tasting tea and when infused for 4 hours or more and offer an amazing source of key minerals that many of us are lacking. The creamy white onions combined with the fruit of the cider work well together with the nettle pesto giving a welcome hit of iron astringency. As an alternative, some curried apple puree or indeed parsnip would work equally well to replace the pesto. Also good this month and there to be enjoyed - fresh crab, English watercress, rhubarb, lamb and wild morels.

RECIPE: WHITE ONION AND CIDER SOUP WITH NETTLE PESTO

Ingredients

Serves 4

• 10 large white onions peeled and sliced thinly

• 400 ml chicken or vegetable stock

• 300 ml of dry cider

• 125g butter

• 150 ml double cream

Nettle Pesto

• 150 g young nettle tops

• 50 gm pine nuts

• 150 ml olive oil

• ½ garlic clove finely chopped

• 50g grated parmesan

• Salt and pepper

Method

1. Wearing gloves place the young nettle tops in boiling water for 1.5 mins and then immediately plunge into ice cold water. When cool squeeze out excess water.

2. Blitz the pine nuts, parmesan, chopped garlic and nettles and blitz to a paste and then pour in the olive oil whilst blending. Season to taste.

3. Melt the butter gently in a large pan, pour in the chicken stock and cider and then add the onions and sweat until soft and tender for approximately 10 -15 minutes.

4. Place into a blender and blend until smooth adding the cream at the end

5. Pass through a fine sieve and adjust the consistency with stock. Season to salt and freshly ground pepper.

THE ULTIMATE IN SELF-DEFENCE TISKA Karate

TISKA Karate is a nationally and internationally recognised organisation, founded over 30 years ago by Chief Instructor Shihan Gursharan Sahota (9th Dan). Our classes focus on far more than punches and kicks - we help children grow into confident, respectful and selfdisciplined young people.

Looking for an activity that builds confidence, focus and resilience in your child? Children can start training from just 4 years old and families are welcome to train together, making karate a positive shared experience. At our clubs students learn practical self-defence while improving fitness, concentration and self-belief.

Karate is especially helpful for children who may be struggling with bullying, exam stress, low confidence or difficulty focussing. Through

structured classes, clear boundaries and positive encouragement, children gain the tools to stay calm, focussed and confident - both inside and outside the dojo.

Parents love that TISKA places a strong emphasis on etiquette, respect and discipline, helping children develop good manners, listening skills and respect for others.

Adults benefit too, with improved fitness, wellbeing and a strong sense of belonging. Being part of TISKA means joining a supportive community and building lasting friendships.

Entertaining, beautifully considered

There is an art to creating events that feel both elegant and effortless. The most memorable gatherings are never simply about scale, but about atmosphere, the quiet confidence of a beautifully arranged space, the rhythm of the evening, and the way each detail contributes to a larger feeling of welcome and occasion.

For Sunita, founder of Neon Tiger Events, that is where the essence of good entertaining begins. “I have always believed that the most successful events are the ones where people feel instantly at ease, while still experiencing something visually striking and thoughtfully designed” she says. “It is about striking the right balance between beauty, function and feeling.” From large scale occasions at venues such as the National Gallery to intimate private dinners, lunches and elevated brand experiences, Neon Tiger Events brings a tailored sensibility to every brief.

The style of an event can transform the way it is remembered. A considered palette, layered textures, elegant florals, candlelight and carefully chosen details all work together to create a setting that feels immersive and refined. Whether it is a table, a room or an entire venue, the aim is always the same: to create something distinctive, polished and memorable.

At Neon Tiger Events, design and guest

experience go hand in hand. Every element is shaped with intention, from the flow of the space to the final finishing touches. The result is an event that feels seamless in delivery and rich in atmosphere, never overworked, but always considered.

In a world where guests increasingly value experiences that feel personal and beautifully executed, thoughtful event design matters more than ever. It is the difference between something that simply looks good and something that lingers in the memory.

For Neon Tiger Events, that is the heart of every project: refined styling, seamless planning and occasions that feel as impressive as they are inviting.

Phasing into Retirement

5 Essential Financial Considerations

Phasing into retirement can give you more flexibility, but it can also add complexity. You may have a part-time salary, pension income, savings, and investments working together, and the order you use them in can affect tax and long-term security.

1. Work out whether your income will cover your lifestyle

If you reduce hours or change roles, your salary might not be enough. You may need to top it up using savings, investments, or pension withdrawals. Because pension income usually counts towards Income Tax, tracking each income stream can help you avoid surprises.

2. Decide whether to keep paying into your pension

Continuing contributions can strengthen your future options. Be careful if you start taking flexible income from a defined contribution pension, as you could trigger the Money Purchase Annual Allowance (MPAA). In 2025/26 the maxiumum Annual Allowance is £60,000, but the MPAA can reduce future contributions to £10,000.

3. Choose the best time to claim your State Pension State Pension age is 66 and is due to rise gradually to 68 by 2046. You must claim it, it is not

automatic. If you keep working, deferring may reduce tax while you have other income, and it increases what you receive later by 1% for every nine weeks you wait.

4. Review how your pension and other assets are invested

Many pensions shift towards lower-risk funds as retirement approaches. If you are extending your time horizon, it may be worth checking whether your investments still match your goals, timeframe, and attitude to risk.

5. Map out your long-term income needs Spending often changes through retirement, and it can be hard to judge how long your assets will last. Cashflow modelling can help you test different assumptions, such as inflation and investment returns, and spot any potential shortfall early.

If you would like help building a phased retirement plan that keeps your income, tax, and investments aligned, call Agility Financial on 01494 680848 or email hello@ agilityfinancial.co.uk to arrange a chat.

Five things people forget to include in their Will

Writing a Will is one of the most important steps you can take to protect your family and your wishes. Many people focus on the bigger picture, such as who inherits their home or savings, but it is often the smaller or more personal details that are overlooked. Missing information can create uncertainty for your loved ones during an emotional time. Minesh Thakrar, Partner in the Wills, Trusts and Probate team, outlines five things people commonly forget to include.

1. Digital assets and online accounts

From online banking and investments to social media and photo libraries, much of our lives now exists digitally. Without clear instructions, it can be difficult for executors to access or even locate these accounts. Providing a clear record of your digital assets, and how they should be handled, can help avoid unnecessary delays and confusion.

2. Personal possessions with sentimental value

Many people assume their family will work things out when it comes to jewellery, keepsakes or other personal items. In reality, these can be the very things that cause disagreement. Leaving a clear record of who should receive specific items helps avoid uncertainty and ensures your wishes are respected.

3. Funeral wishes

While funeral instructions are not legally binding, setting out your preferences can provide valuable guidance and reassurance for your

family. Whether you have a preference for burial or cremation, or specific wishes for the service, including this information can ease decision making at a difficult time.

4. Guardianship of children

For parents, appointing a guardian is one of the most important decisions you can make. Without a named guardian, the courts may need to decide who takes on this role. A Will allows you to set out your choice clearly and explain your reasoning if needed.

5. Ongoing review and updates

A Will is not something you should write once and forget. Changes in circumstances such as marriage, divorce, the arrival of children or grandchildren, or acquiring new assets can all affect whether your Will still reflects your wishes. Regular reviews help ensure it remains up to date and effective.

A simple step that makes a real difference

A well drafted Will gives clarity, reduces the risk of disputes and ensures that the people and causes you care about are looked after. Taking the time to consider the details, not just the headline decisions, can make a significant difference for those you leave behind.

If you would like to make a new Will or review an existing one, our Wills, Trusts and Probate team would be happy to help. Please contact Minesh Thakrar on 01494 781366 or email minesh.thakrar@blasermills.co.uk.

Choosing Resolution, Not Litigation in Family Separation

Separation is never easy. When families divide, emotions run high and the future can feel uncertain. Yet, more than ever, there are constructive paths to resolve issues without stepping into a courtroom. Non-court dispute resolution, such as mediation, arbitration, collaborative practice, parenting coordination, or solicitor-led negotiation, offers families a way to reach lasting agreements with dignity, privacy, and control.

These approaches shift the focus from “winning” to problem-solving. They are typically quicker and more cost-effective than litigation and, crucially, they reduce conflict. For parents, that means a better chance of preserving cooperative relationships and protecting children from the stress of contested proceedings. Solutions shaped by the parties themselves are also more likely to be practical and to endure.

But non-court routes still benefit from expert guidance. Every separation involves legal rights, financial realities, and deeply personal priorities. A family lawyer can explain options clearly, assess which process best suits your circumstances, and ensure that any agreement is fair, workable, and capable of being made legally binding where appropriate. Early advice can prevent missteps, manage expectations, and help you prepare, emotionally and practically, for constructive discussions.

Academic excellence whilst cherishing childhood

Caldicott delivers a first-class educational experience for boys that is built on timeless foundations, while fitting the demands of the modern world. Located in rural South Bucks, the school is only 30 minutes from West London; with 40 acres of green belt countryside, our prep school consists of 250 boys aged 7-13. A dedicated team of Caldicott drivers takes some stress out of the school run with a minibus fleet extending locally and throughout West London. We wholeheartedly believe in our boys-only model as being the most effective option for boys at this age, and as a result, our staff are experts on getting the best out of our pupils. Following a holistic childhood in the countryside, with plenty of space to grow, boys then move on to top senior schools after attaining stellar results. We’re known

for our impressive leavers’ destinations list; boys in the last five years have progressed to more than 30 different senior schools. Caldicott has also achieved a ‘full house’ of scholarships (academia, arts and sport) for many years, despite modestly sized year groups. Every boy has access to exceptionally high-quality coaching, outstanding facilities and a broad range of opportunities to relish enjoyment through sport. The Arts have a big place too; over 180 individual instrumental music lessons and 120 LAMDA tuition sessions are timetabled weekly.

Our three pathways in the most senior two years support our already thriving Years 7 and 8. Between Day Plus, Weekly, and Full Boarding, families are able to choose how much their son boards, with a customised flight path for each boy depending on his goals at 13+. Still advocates of boarding (many still opt to Weekly or Full Board to make the most of the ever-popular evening activities programme.), Caldicott appreciates the individualised needs of each child and the fact that boarding may just not be right for some boys. Flexi boarding is available from as early as Year 3 for those keen boys who want a taste of what this experience has to offer.

Developing Confidence

In any organisation, culture can be described quite simply as “the way we do things around here.” It is the combined behaviours of everyone within a community each day. In a school, culture is the atmosphere in which everything takes place and it is therefore critical to success. Values sit at the centre of that culture.

The research evidence is clear: schools that are values-driven have high expectations and demonstrate academic, professional and social success. At Swanbourne House, three values help define who we are and guide everything that we do: kindness, curiosity and effort.

These are simple words, but they carry real meaning. They apply to everyone in the community – from the youngest child to the most experienced teacher. They shape how we treat one another, how we approach learning and how we support each other. Around these values sits our ethos – how we intend to be as a community.

Developing character is fundamental. Positive virtues such as integrity, respect, resilience, empathy, humility and kindness guide children to live well and contribute meaningfully. At Swanbourne House, these traits are taught, championed and celebrated from a child’s earliest days.

Alongside this sits a love of learning. Children should be inspired by the joy of achievement and the celebration of every step on the path to success. A rigorous academic education must go hand in hand with strong character development, supported by a curriculum that weaves together knowledge, skills and co-curricular opportunities.

Exploration and discovery are equally important. Education should encourage children to broaden their perspectives, expand their horizons and discover passions that shape their futures.

Ambition and endeavour complete the picture. We aim high for every child and encourage them to do the same. With the support of outstanding teachers, children learn to persevere through challenges and experience moments that foster resilience, self-belief and a genuine sense of achievement.

When values and ethos come together, they create a culture that allows children to flourish — where kindness is celebrated, curiosity is encouraged and effort is recognised every day.

Make your mark: train to teach with Astra SCITT

Whether you are a recent graduate or considering a career change, teacher training offers many opportunities. It’s a chance to work in a role that is genuinely fulfilling, making a real difference in the lives of young people.

Astra SCITT offers school-based teacher training, with the added benefit of a university-backed PGCE. Training is based in local schools. Expert input includes an in-school mentor to guide and support you and subject specialists to enable you to develop your skills.

In primary, secondary and special schools across Buckinghamshire there is a high demand for wellqualified graduates entering the teaching profession. Here’s what one of our trainees has to say.

Kenny: secondary trainee teacher - English

Tell us about your journey to becoming a teacher.

I had always considered teaching, and after completing my MA I moved to Thailand, and worked at a school which was a fantastic experience, so when I returned to the UK I wanted to train to teach, to develop expertise in my subject, while also making a difference in the lives of young people.

Why did you select Astra as your training provider?

Astra was perfect as I wanted to gain school experience from the start, while also gaining a PGCE. The school-centred approach allowed me to develop quickly by learning directly from experienced classroom teachers.

What have been the highlights of your training?

When lessons go well, I feel the trust and appreciation of students. Seeing pupils outside the classroom and them talking to you about

“Expert input includes an in-school mentor to guide and support you and subject specialists to enable you to develop your skills”

the lesson, or telling you how much they enjoyed it, is incredibly rewarding.

What have been the challenges?

Initially, it was difficult to make connections between educational theory and how to apply it in practice. However, the more I teach, the easier this has become. Also, time management – teaching requires a high level of organisation.

Top advice for anyone considering teaching?

Ask for help. Your colleagues want to see you succeed, so trust in that support. Also, don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Things will go wrong at times, but what matters is how you respond and what you learn from those experiences.

PRIVATELY EDUCATED PEOPLE DOMINATE TOP BRITISH JOBS

The study, by the Sutton Trust education charity, shows that virtually every key profession is dominated by privately educated pupils grabbing the senior management/director positions

Their grip on power is most noticeable in the judiciary, where 74 per cent of leading judges (those in the High Court or Court of Appeal) were privately educated.

Figures in the report also show that one in three MPs (32 per cent) was privately educated –as were half the members of the Conservative Cabinet. Even in Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Cabinet, 13 per cent of members went to private school. Nationally, the figure is just 7 per cent.

The report, carried out by Dr Philip Kirby, goes on to show that 71 per cent of senior Army officers – two-star generals and above – went to private schools. Only 12 per cent attended comprehensives.

“The

higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools”

In medicine, 61 per cent of doctors were privately educated while 22 per cent went to selective state grammar schools and just 16 per cent to comprehensives. The list goes on – 48 per cent of civil servants were educated privately, 29 per cent went to selective grammar schools and 23 per cent to comprehensives.

The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools. And of those chief executives of FTSE 100 companies who were educated in the UK, 34 per cent were privately educated.

Nearly half the top actors – 42 per cent of Bafta Award winners – went to private schools, fuelling criticism that the profession is becoming more elitist.

“Our research shows that your chances of reaching the top in so many areas of British life are so much better if you went to an independent school,” said Sir Peter Lampl, the chairman of the Sutton Trust. “As well as academic achievement, an independent education tends to develop the essential skills such as confidence, articulacy and teamwork, which are vital to career success.

FASHION, HEALTH & BEAUTY

Skinimalism 2.0: The Elevated Return to Effortless Beauty

Less coverage, more intention – 2026’s defining beauty trend refines the “nomakeup makeup” look into something altogether more luxurious, wearable and intelligently curated.

In 2026, beauty is taking a decisive step away from maximalism and heavy transformation, instead embracing what industry insiders are calling Skinimalism 2.0. Building on the pared-back routines that gained traction in recent years, this evolution is less about doing less – and more about doing just enough, exceptionally well.

The aesthetic draws from a blend of influences: the glassy, lit-from-within skin synonymous with Korean beauty, the understated ease of French pharmacy staples, and a broader cultural shift toward wellness, longevity and authenticity. The result is skin that looks like skin – refined, luminous and quietly perfected. Think breathable bases, softly groomed brows and a natural flush that appears to come from within.

What defines this new phase is its precision. Earlier interpretations of minimal beauty often leaned overly casual; Skinimalism 2.0 is more intentional. Texture plays a central role, with

sheer, skin-enhancing formulas replacing heavy foundations. Complexion products are designed to blur rather than conceal, allowing freckles, tone variations and natural contours to remain visible. It is not about covering imperfections, but diffusing them.

Equally important is the shift toward hybrid products. Skincare-infused foundations, serum concealers and balm-like blushers streamline routines while improving skin quality over time. This dual-purpose approach aligns with increasingly busy lifestyles, particularly for those balancing travel, work and social commitments. The routine is efficient, but never rushed in its effect.

Application techniques have also evolved. Fingers are often favoured over brushes, pressing product into the skin for a seamless finish. Concealer is used sparingly – around the eyes, the sides of the nose or on isolated blemishes – rather than applied broadly. Cream textures dominate, melting into the skin and avoiding any sense of buildup. The overall effect is polished but imperceptible.

Crucially, this is a trend defined by accessibility. It does not require professional skill or a lengthy

routine, making it highly adaptable for everyday wear. A well-prepped base remains essential: hydrated, balanced skin ensures that lighter products perform at their best. From there, a simple sequence – sheer base, targeted concealer, subtle colour – creates a look that feels both modern and effortless.

The versatility of Skinimalism 2.0 is part of its appeal. It can be worn to the office, on long-haul flights or for evening occasions with minimal adjustment. A touch of highlighter or a softly defined eye can elevate the look without compromising its core principle of restraint. It is beauty that moves with the wearer, rather than sitting on top of them.

Ultimately, this trend reflects a broader recalibration within luxury. Excess is giving way to refinement, and visibility to subtlety. In a landscape where authenticity is increasingly prized, the most compelling beauty looks are those that enhance rather than obscure. Skinimalism 2.0 captures that shift perfectly – quietly confident, intelligently executed and undeniably modern.

Back Story

Are you sitting comfortably?

If not, Back In Action can help

How much is it worth to lose your back pain?

That’s an intriguing question, isn’t it?

Many would pay a small fortune if they knew for certain that a solution would finally work. According to ergonomic experts at Back In Action, over 80% of their clients experience youthful movement again, with less pain, enabling them to continue with work and enjoy their favourite sports.

Over 80% is quite a claim, but customers have voted them Number One in the UK for four consecutive years. As a family business, they take immense pride in this achievement. If you suffer from back pain, it’s time to visit their website or one of their stores.

Founder David Newbound notes that many clients arrive at Back In Action having lost hope of permanent relief.

Carefully chosen and high-quality kneeling chairs can help alleviate back pain

“Most pain can be fixed by rest and skilled treatment,” David explains. “However, we often see clients who have been referred by practitioners when progress has stalled. They may have tried various treatments, painkillers, and even switched mattresses, yet they still suffer pain and feel increasingly demoralised.”

Spend a little, gain a lot?

Many clients find themselves surprised by the aesthetic appeal of Back In Action’s showrooms, resembling design-led furniture stores. This is intentional: Back In Action sources designs that are both functional and beautiful. They believe that furniture should enhance any home or office without compromising style.

Where do the health benefits come from?

With a name like Back In Action, it’s no surprise they emphasise movement—getting your spine moving and getting you and your back back into action. The health benefits stem from promoting movement that keeps blood circulating, even while sitting. This can lead to a positive feedback loop of decreased pain and increased activity.

A solution for everyone

Think your spine is beyond help? Back In Action has developed an innovative method to rejuvenate spinal movement: The Mobiliser. It has gained MOD medical approval and received accolades from thousands who claim it has transformed their lives. A test session is free, and they offer “Spine Reset Packages” for home that are affordable for most people.

There has traditionally been a certain degree of stigma surrounding adult orthodontics, but it is disappearing.

While the shame of wearing braces has slowly faded over the last two decades, the shame of having bad teeth has increased and there has been a surge in the number of adults choosing to address orthodontic issues.

Orthodontic treatment involves wearing a brace – fixed or removable – to improve your smile by straightening crooked teeth, but the benefits are not limited to aesthetics.

People who suffer from strain in their jaw, and related headaches, often find that the problem is caused by an uneven bite that orthodontic treatment can fix.

Orthodontics also helps to improve the health of your teeth and gums by ensuring crooked teeth don’t prevent you from being able to clean all areas.

At Sorriso Dentistry, we have our own in-house orthodontist, so if crooked teeth are an issue for you, give us a call to arrange a consultation – nothing you wear is more important than your smile!

What would I gain from Orthodontic Treatment?

The benefits of orthodontic treatment include improving your smile and appearance, correcting dental crowding and straightening teeth, correcting your bite so that the front and back teeth meet together evenly on closing reducing the likelihood of damage to prominent teeth.

At what age should I have Orthodontic Treatment?

Generally speaking, the best time to have treatment is during childhood. However, as we mention above, adults are now seeking orthodontic treatment to achieve the perfect smile due to the advances in brace techniques and materials used.

Who carries out orthodontics?

We believe Orthodontic treatment should ideally be carried out by a specialist called an orthodontist. At Sorriso Dentistry, our in-house orthodontist is both an NHS consultant and specialist in private practice.

The British Orthodontic Society released figures in 2016 that emphasised that trend, with 75 per cent of respondents reporting an increase in adult treatments.

Meanwhile, in the US, more than 1.2 million adults underwent orthodontic treatment in 2012 – a 39 per cent increase since 1996.

There have been significant improvements in orthodontic technology over that period, with new materials and techniques providing options that make braces less conspicuous, more affordable and work better.

Celebrities with adult braces such as Tom Cruise, Gwen Stefani and Serena and Venus Williams, have also played a part in increasing the popularity of adult orthodontics.

Whatever the reason, be it technological improvements or increased awareness, the change in attitude is a reason to smile.

What does it involve?

First and most important, a consultation appointment- we listen to your treatment needs and carry out a comprehensive examination of your jaw, your teeth and your bite to determine which orthodontic appliance would best suit your teeth. Once you decide to go ahead with treatment, we will arrange an appointment to collate further information and records, including X-rays, photographs and impressions of your teeth. These are used to plan your treatment and monitor its progress, as well as then comparing against the final results. Braces are then fitted and checked every 6-8 weeks. This is to monitor the progress of treatment and to tighten or adjust the brace as planned. Once we are happy with the appearance of your teeth we will remove the brace and provide you with retainers to hold your teeth in the new position.

Ageing Well Through Breath

Ageing well is often framed as adding years to life. An alternative is to see aging as adding life to your years through steady energy, clarity of mind; and a body that feels like somewhere you can live from, rather that something you need to manage.

Many of us are moving through life at a pace that asks a lot of the body: sustained output, shallow breathing, rushed meals, constant stimulation and very little space to integrate.

Breath becomes a subtle but powerful portal. It sits at the intersection of body, mind, emotion and spirit, offering a direct way to influence how we experience ourselves from moment to moment.

The physical: breath as foundation

Breath shapes the body’s internal environment. It influences oxygen and carbon dioxide balance, supports cardiovascular rhythms and plays a role in how the body responds to and recovers from stress. The diaphragm also supports circulation and fluid movement through its constant, flowing motion.

Over time, the way we breathe contributes to how energy is sustained, how the body repairs and how resilient it feels.

The emotional: breath as access

Emotions are often managed cognitively, yet they are experienced physically.

When emotional responses are repeatedly set aside, they can settle into the body as tension or background holding. Breathwork brings attention back to sensation: tightness, warmth, movement, or even stillness. This creates the conditions for those experiences to shift. With practice, this allows for a different relationship with emotion, one that includes movement and completion, rather than simple containment.

The mental: breath as space

As life becomes fuller, the mind can become more densely occupied. Breath introduces space back into the system. Slower, more conscious breathing supports focus and steadiness, while also softening the intensity of internal dialogue.

From here, perspective widens and thinking becomes more flexible.

The spiritual: breath as reconnection

There is also a nuanced dimension to breath.

Through sustained attention, it can bring a sense of connection that sits underneath roles, responsibilities as well as the ongoing fluctuations of life. A delicate sense of presence begins to emerge - often deeply grounding. Within this, the body softens, perspective broadens, connection deepens and there is a return to trust in the process of change.

Breathwork is way of reclaiming: clarity, feeling and a more integrated way of living as we traverse each phase of life.

Looking After Your Hearing, Together

Being able to support someone with their hearing — and help them stay connected at work, socially and included within family life — is a real privilege.

My passion for audiology is deeply personal. Both of my children were born with hearing loss, so I understand first-hand the challenges this can bring at home. When hearing becomes difficult, communication can suffer, sometimes leading to frustration, anxiety, or isolation. Helping people stay connected to the people and moments that matter most is at the heart of everything I do.

that time, I had the opportunity to work alongside experienced audiologists and ENT consultants, building a strong and well-rounded understanding of hearing and the many ways it can affect everyday life.

At Paula Cook Audiology, every appointment starts with time — time to listen. We begin with a relaxed, in-depth consultation to understand your concerns and how your hearing is affecting you day to day. We also take a full medical history so we can look at the bigger picture of your hearing health.

I have worked in audiology for over 20 years, beginning my career within the NHS. During

Your ears are then carefully examined using a video otoscope, allowing you to see exactly what I see while we discuss the health of your ears together. If needed, we carry out further tests, including assessments of middle ear function and a full hearing evaluation to understand the quietest sounds you can hear. Speech testing, including speech-in-noise assessments, may also be used to understand how you manage in real-world listening situations.

If hearing aids are recommended, I’ll guide you through the options available, with opportunities to trial demonstration devices. Using Real Ear Measurements, each hearing aid is precisely tailored to your ears for the best possible clarity and comfort.

I also offer children’s hearing assessments, following appropriate referral, to ensure younger ears receive the same careful, specialist attention. Hearing care is not a quick fix — it’s a journey that takes time, trust, and expertise. I’m committed to supporting you every step of the way.

Helping Parents Reclaim Their Freedom

For many families, the conversation about “what next” for Mum or Dad starts from a place of worry: they certainly don’t need a care home, but they could do with a little more support.

Is the house still practical? The garden still manageable? What if they fall? Are they lonely? Yet the most powerful stories coming out of Castle View Windsor aren’t about loss at all - they’re about parents quietly reclaiming their freedom.

Castle View is part of a new generation of retirement communities where the starting point is independence, not care. Residents buy or rent their own contemporary apartments, front doors, kitchens and outside space. They choose their own routines, head into Windsor when they like, see friends and family on their own terms. The difference is that this independence sits within an environment carefully designed around later life - level access, lifts, secure entry, and a team on site around the clock if something does go wrong. Parents get their life back; adult children get to stop “keeping one eye on the

phone” at all times.

That balance is also behind Castle View’s new series of free guides, including one written specifically for adult children and another focusing on support and care. The adult children guide is disarmingly honest about the knotty questions: how to raise the idea of downsizing without sounding bossy? how to talk about safety and loneliness? - without making parents feel old, and how to weigh up the family home against options that might give more daytoday freedom?

The Support and Care guide shows how help can be layered-in gently over time - from full independence to housekeeping, meals and visiting carers, without ever taking away control from Mum & Dad. Support is there if it’s needed, not pushed when it isn’t and is always at residents’ absolute discretion.

You see this ‘freedom first, safety builtin’ approach in the families who’ve chosen Castle View. Daughters talk about parents who were becoming lonely and anxious, now heading to our bistro with friends, attending film night, or just enjoying a glass of wine with spectacular views across Windsor. They still have their own space and privacy, but they now have company, and someone to check in on them.

Reclaiming your parents’ freedom in later life isn’t about stepping back; it’s about choosing an environment where they can live more, worry less, and know that if they ever need extra support, it’s there in the wings. Castle View; not a retreat from life, but the base for a new stimulating, secure chapter.

HOUSE & GARDEN

The Space You’ll Never Want to Leave

There’s a quiet moment, just before everything begins. The table is set, glasses catching the light, the garden still. Then the doors open - and suddenly, your home extends beyond its walls.

This is the feeling a Calista pergola creates.

Not just an outdoor structure, but a space that invites you to live differently. To linger longer.

To step outside, even when the weather says otherwise. Because with Calista, the garden isn’t something you visit in summer - it’s somewhere you belong, all year round.

Morning coffee under soft daylight. Long lunches that drift into evening. The sound of rain above you, without ever needing to retreat inside.

Designed as a sheltered yet open space, Calista allows you to relax, dine, and entertain while staying connected to the natural world around you.

At its heart is a beautifully considered balance between protection and openness. The clean, architectural lines create a sense of calm permanence, while timber walls, sliding glass, integrated shading, lighting and sound mean the space adapts effortlessly to your mood and the moment.

And then there’s the light.

A glazed roof allows daylight to pour in, keeping the space bright and alive - never enclosed, never cut off from the sky. Even as the seasons change, the connection to your garden remains uninterrupted, preserving that sense of openness that makes outdoor living so restorative.

This is where Calista quietly stands apart. It doesn’t fight the elements - it works with them. Shielding you when needed, opening up when it matters, always maintaining that delicate balance between comfort and connection.

Because the real luxury isn’t just design or materials. It’s the freedom to use your space whenever you choose. To host without hesitation. To unwind without compromise.

To step outside, and feel completely at home.

Fully appreciate your art with great LED picture lighting

There are so many types and styles of picture lights available to buy now and unfortunately most of them do not follow the essential components required to light art well. Some are low cost and others can be very expensive, but both will light art poorly. You can recognise these by experiencing the following sub-standard results:

• Over lit at the top

• Little or no light coverage further down or at the sides to become Under lit everywhere else

• Glare points on the canvas

• Damaging heat, glare & UV from the lightsource

• Frequent lamp changes

• High running costs

Many lamp types are used in picture lights such as candles, G9 Capsules & 221mm/284mm S15 lamps and they don’t light art well. They have been selected for use in picture lights because of their size rather than their performance.

To truly light art well and gain the most from your picture lights the following points must be insisted on:

Colour Temperature: A warm white light (2,700K is ideal)

Colour Rendering Index:A high CRI is required to bring out the rich colours, definition & brush strokes in the paintings. Insist on >95 CRI.

Head Size, Arm Position & LED Spacing and Lensing: These 3 dynamics must work together to gain the best coverage across the canvas. For example, when lighting a ½ portrait size painting (50”x 40”). This can be done with a smaller head if it has the correctly sized arms and the configuration of lensing and spacing is correct. This can also be lit with a larger head with shorter arms and a different configuration of lighting. The arms need to be calculated to give the correct elevation & projection for the head size. Swivel knuckles should be present to gain the desired head position and angle. This will shield the LED source and remove any glare. Lighting Levels: Each picture light should be supplied with its own dedicated dimmer to ensure correct levels are achieved. Over lighting can be just as bad as under lighting and a painting’s ideal light level will depend on its content, colours and brush strokes.

Did You Know - You Can Now Upgrade A Poorly Performing Picture Light

If you have a picture light and are not happy with the light coverage from it, there is now a quick & easy option to upgrade it and dramatically improve the light coverage across your painting. These kits are sized to fit into your existing head with correctly spaced and lensed LEDs to cover the required canvas size. They come with a dimming kit and properly sized arms.

We recently upgraded the picture lighting in the Long Gallery at Castle Howard using this technology and you can see how the art collection stands out now.

“With over 20 years of LED lighting experience, I wanted to develop a high quality, low cost & easy to install LED upgrade kit to light art well, and this product does just that” - Iain McIntosh

Creating gardens that feel right from the start

In a world that rarely pauses, the garden has quietly reclaimed its place as one of the most valuable parts of a home.

Homeowners are beginning to rethink their gardens in the same way they might approach renovating their interiors: considering functionality alongside flow, atmosphere and long-term enjoyment rather than adding individual features. For many homeowners, the desire for a beautiful garden is clear, yet the path to achieving it feels anything but. Some want a designer who can make the best use of space; others long for a garden with unique presence, atmosphere and that unmistakable wow factor. Increasingly, people are seeking something deeper: a

garden that feels like more of an outdoor ‘sanctuary’ - a place that restores, inspires and reconnects.

This is the philosophy at the heart of our work. We specialise in creating immersive gardens that engage the senses and uplift the spirit. Whether you imagine a peaceful retreat, a vibrant social space or a garden that simply helps you feel more alive, we craft environments that nourish both body and soul. Every design is tailored, thoughtful and feels uniquely yours.

At our award-winning studio near Thame, we focus on full garden transformations, designing cohesive outdoor spaces from the ground up. While we are designers rather than landscapers, we collaborate closely with trusted BALI and APL -accredited contractors who bring our concepts to life with exceptional craftsmanship.

What sets our approach apart is the way we think about the garden as a whole rather than a collection of features. We consider how spaces connect, how movement unfolds through the landscape and how planting, structure and materials work together to create atmosphere.

Each garden is carefully composed to feel natural to its setting and comfortable to live with — balancing moments for gathering, quieter areas to pause, and views that draw you through the space. Over time, the garden settles into the architecture of the home, becoming an integral part of everyday life.

The result is a garden that feels composed, welcoming and unmistakably personal. When a garden is well designed – you feel it.

Stop your home becoming a sauna

External blinds are quickly moving from optional extra to essential feature in UK homes. As heatwaves become more frequent and intense, designing houses that can stay cool is no longer a luxury - it is a necessity.

When Lorraine Dooley renovated her Somerset bungalow into a modern family home, overheating was not a top priority. The design focused on large, south-west-facing windows to maximise light and views. Like many UK homeowners, the family were initially sceptical about including external blinds, assuming they wouldn’t be necessary.

That assumption didn’t last long. Within months of moving in, even winter sun caused the house to overheat. By May 2025, warmer days made the living spaces uncomfortable, while glare from the sun disrupted daily life. Plans to delay installation were quickly abandoned.

The results were immediate. Installed in just one day, the external blinds dramatically reduced indoor temperatures. Rooms that had previously been hotter than outside became noticeably cooler and more comfortable. The key advantage is simple: external blinds stop heat before it enters the building, unlike internal solutions which only manage it after the fact.

This case reflects a growing reality across the UK. Overheating is becoming a persistent issue, and architects are increasingly incorporating passive cooling measures into their designs. External blinds, already common in warmer European climates, are proving to be one of the most effective solutions.

“I would absolutely recommend Kensington Blinds. The blinds are a great investment, and they are very durable, and a really nice quality and the client is very happy. I’ve been in the house when the blinds are down and the light quality is great. The blinds give the building a nice line and are very complimentary to the design” - Ines Noblin, Hadfield + Noblin Architects

“Kensington Blinds are real experts in the field; knowledgeable and helpful. They came on site and I visited them at their offices and they were always offering solutions to any possible problems”

- Lorraine Dooley, homeowner

They also bring added benefits, including reduced glare, increased privacy, and a clean, integrated look that complements modern architecture. Automated features, such as solar sensors, allow blinds to adjust throughout the day, keeping homes comfortable without effort. While the upfront cost may give some homeowners pause, it is comparable to high-end internal blinds or curtains - yet far more effective. As the UK adapts to a warming climate, external blinds are no longer a design extra. They are becoming a standard requirement for comfortable, future-ready homes.

THE MAKINGS OF THE MODERN GARDEN

Don’t deny it - we all saw it. Daylight. The first bountiful beams of sun poking through the clouds herald a wave of something we like to call the garden gaze. Those fleeting moments when you catch a glimpse of the space at the back of your home, almost as if it has suddenly appeared: a green, growing landmass you’re seeing for the very first time. Having almost forgotten it, one of the most important areas of your home is about to burst back into life. You utter to yourself, “We need to do something about the garden.”

But what does the modern garden look like? Well, as with every aspect of home design, it depends entirely on you. Still, we thought we’d give you a bit of a cheat sheet. So here are five templates to get you started in growing your style. Different aesthetics that, with the right furniture, will make your outdoor space the ultimate spring hosting spot and the perfect outdoor escape.

MID-CENTURY MASTERS:

If one era of design that will forever have it’s time in the sunlight - metaphorically and physically - then mid-century is it. Classics of the genre have become icons of the present, so much so that outdoor versions of some of the world’s most

beloved designs are now cultivating stylish gardens and cropping up in spaces far beyond even the brilliant imaginations of Eames and Saarinen could have predicted.

Take one of the old masters: Cassina’s Fauteuil Grand Comfort (the sofa formerly known as LC3) is a seating solution that has shaped some of the suavest settings this side of the ’50s, now allowing people to bask in its natural charisma beyond four walls - and beyond the 20th century.

THE ANGLO-CLASSIC:

We’re a bit bonkers about our gardens in this country. With a staggering 85% of us living in urbanised areas, you can understand why we love our personal patches of land so much. It’s likely why the RHS Chelsea Flower Show attracts over 140,000 horticulture enthusiasts each year, all eager to gaze upon its creative floral dioramas. But what makes a stereotypical UK outdoor space? As most of our parents would likely tell us: big flowers, winding trees, about forty forgotten gardening gloves and, of course, enough furniture to fit the entire street when BBQ season comes around.

We find that looking a little further afield and investing in some stunning Scandi furniture, like Gubi or Cane-line, suits the eloquence of the Great British garden perfectly.

THE MODERN MEDITERRANEAN:

Synonymous with good weather, good food andmost importantly - a healthier work/life balance. When you think of a part of the world where people truly know how to enjoy the outdoors, your mind instinctively heads off to Stansted and lands somewhere closer to the equator. If you’re lucky, somewhere on the Mediterranean Sea. So why not bring a slice of the sun a little closer to home? Bring a bold colour palette, break out the good wine and get ready for dining al fresco. Create a modern Mediterranean garden with brands like B&B Italia, Flexform and Foscarini opening up your options all the way from Italy.

JAPANDI JARDIN:

We’ve seen Scandinavian furniture making surprise appearances across the blog so far - so what’s one more? Well, this time it’s taking more of a starring role. Japandi is a clean-yet-stylish interior design

movement that has dominated minimalist abodes for the better part of the 21st century. Now, like all good aesthetics, it has slipped out the back door and settled into the gardens of design fans. Warm timbers, gravel beds and sparsely but thoughtfully placed plant life are the ways to harness the power of both Nordic hygge and Japanese wabi-sabi. When it comes to furnishing your extravagancefree exterior, look to Scandi design brands Carl Hansen and &Tradition, which make a stylish statement at whisper level.

THE FUTURE OF OUTDOOR:

This wouldn’t be a blog about future-proofing your own personal paradise without saving the most relevant of these options for last: futuristic furniture. Characteristics like sleek angles and monochromatic tones define this trend of near scifi futurism. Think the beachfronts of Ibiza meeting the defined lines of the ultra-modern world. Brands like Vondom and Gandia Blasco encapsulate this polished aesthetic with perfection. Blending with sea, sun and sand alike, this is ideal for warmer weather environments. chaplins.co.uk

PROSPRAY LONDON Finished to Perfection

In today’s luxury interiors, transformation no longer means demolition. Instead, the most discerning homeowners are turning to refined restoration an approach that blends craftsmanship, sustainability and efficiency. At the forefront of this movement is ProSpray London, a specialist paint-spray company known for revitalising kitchens, furniture and architectural surfaces across London, Hertfordshire and the Home Counties.

With more than 37 years of industry experience, the company has built a reputation for delivering meticulous, highquality finishes using modern spray technology and expert craftsmanship. The skilled team works across a broad range of materials from wood and MDF to metal, aluminium, uPVC and laminates creating flawless finishes in virtually any colour palette a client desires.

Among the firm’s most sought-after services is its professional kitchen respray. Rather than replacing cabinetry, homeowners can transform their kitchens with a process designed to be both efficient and discreet. Cabinet doors are carefully removed and sprayed in premium Italian lacquer before being reinstalled about a week later, allowing the kitchen to remain functional while the transformation takes place. The result is a space that feels entirely renewed without the disruption, cost or waste of a full renovation.

The same philosophy extends to furniture and joinery. From wardrobes and doors to skirting boards and bespoke cabinetry, each surface is prepared and sprayed using specialist coatings designed for durability and a perfectly smooth finish. By using high-quality paints and tailored finishes including water-based, single-pack and two-pack coatings the team ensures that every project combines beauty with long-lasting protection.

Central to ProSpray London’s success is its attention to detail and personalised service. Every project is treated as unique,

with the team working closely with clients to understand their vision, offer expert guidance and deliver a result that reflects their style whether classic, contemporary or entirely bespoke. Quick turnaround times and transparent pricing further enhance the experience, allowing clients to achieve a dramatic transformation with minimal disruption.

In an era where luxury increasingly values sustainability and craftsmanship, ProSpray London proves that elegance does not always require replacement. Sometimes, the most sophisticated solution is simply to reimagine what already exists and finish it to perfection.

We were told we needed a new roof –we didn’t.

We were struggling to sell our property because potential buyers kept coming back with concerns about the roof. One couple had their roofer say it needed replacing – quoting £18,000. Wanting clarity, we contacted Britton Roofing, who carried out a roof assessment and, for a few hundred pounds, provided a detailed report. Remedial work was needed, but the roof was otherwise in a serviceable condition. The repairs cost us £3,000. Britton Roofing saved us money, time and hassle, and we were able to hand the home over in good order.

A roof isn’t just a layer of tiles — it’s a complex and critical part of a building. There are many different roof systems, each with specific construction methods, materials, and detailing. Understanding how they work together requires more than basic trade skills — it demands both roofing expertise and wider building knowledge. We frequently attend properties where

previous work has failed — not always from bad intentions, but from poor understanding. Inexperienced roofers often misdiagnose issues, offering superficial fixes. These kinds of mistakes can lead to more serious damage, additional cost, and unnecessary stress for homeowners. Our approach is grounded in detailed assessment, informed judgement, and a commitment to providing durable, evidence-based solutions.

Our background in building preservation and restoration sets us apart. Our teams combine roofing expertise with a deeper understanding of how moisture, materials, and structures interact over time. We deliver professional roofing and damp cure services tailored to the condition and history of each property. From comprehensive assessments to high-standard remedial works and full roof replacements, every project is handled with a focus on longevity, building integrity, and cost-effective outcomes.

Britton Roofing is an established business with over 30 years of experience in the roofing industry, serving local towns and villages.

We proudly thrive on reputation and integrity. Our team reflects these values through their workmanship and attention to detail on every job. It’s this commitment to craft, integrity, and long-term value that makes us a trusted name among homeowners and property professionals who expect more than a quick fix.
