A BUSY SUMMER AT THE OAK-TREE SCHOOLS
Oaklands School Sports Day
W
e take a look at the Summer Term highlights at the Oak-Tree Group of Schools - four local independent schools in the Epping Forest area that take pride in the wealth of opportunities they provide. In addition to the classroom-based learning, the Summer Term is filled with extra-curricular activities, educational visits, sports and performances. At Braeside School in Buckhurst Hill, Junior pupils and parents are still talking about the fantastic afternoon they spent celebrating the Queen’s 90th birthday with an afternoon ‘high tea’, traditional British party games and a sing-a-long concert for parents and children to join in with British songs. Many trips have been taking place too and some of the Seniors recently experienced an interesting visit to the Palace of Westminster. Gillian Haddon, Headmistress says, “Our pupils work very hard throughout the year and it is lovely to reward them with these additional extra-curricular opportunities”. At Epping’s Coopersale Hall, pupils recently put on two fantastic performances of Shakespeare’s ‘e Tempest’. With the challenging script and ambitious production, the pupils performed, acted, danced and sang confidently to large audiences of families and friends. Headmistress Kaye Lovejoy places particular importance on the extra-curricular programme and comments, “Our children are continually exposed to new experiences and opportunities as we encourage them to develop a variety of interests and try new activities. We provide around 40 clubs and activities at school and they enjoy learning new skills”. At Normanhurst School in North Chingford, pupils in

Braeside Pupils celebrate the Queen’s birthday
Years 5 to 7 have recently returned from their residential outdoor pursuits trip to Grosvenor Hall in Kent, where they took part in activities such as high-wire rope climbing and zip wires. Claire Osborn, Headmistress, says “is has been such a busy term academically and our pupils have been studying hard for their end of term curricular assessments. It has been really good to extend their learning through the wealth of opportunities outside of the classroom that the school provides. From the Sports Day at Lee Valley Athletics Centre to the trips to the Globe, Olympic Park and a local mosque, this is a very busy term”. As well as providing a busy term of activities such as a trip to Paradise Park, a circus skills workshop and a fun summer fete, pupils at Loughton’s Oaklands School have also been preparing for a very ambitious production of ‘Peter Pan’ at Lopping Hall in Loughton. Headmistress Cheryl Macnair comments, “We provide a range of extra-curricular activities to develop our pupils’ creativity outside the classroom and I’m delighted to see them flourish. Of course, the education in the classroom is extremely important, but so too are the opportunities to take part in the many trips, sports days and performances, which all enhance our pupils’ educational experiences”. e Summer Term sees sports days for pupils of all ages at each school and the children are encouraged to compete for their Houses whilst cheered on by families and friends. e annual Prize Days are excellent opportunities to celebrate the pupils’ numerous successes. n

The exhibition also covers Ali’s religious conversion and his incredible interactions with some of the world’s most powerful and influential leaders including Martin Luther King, Malcolm X and even Saddam Hussein and Leonid Brezhnev during the height of the Cold War. BBC PROMS 2016: FROM BOULEZ TO BOWIE
T
he BBC Proms have announced the programme for its 122nd season featuring more than 90 concerts over eight weeks, including four Last Night celebrations around the UK. New Proms Director David Pickard introduces an innovative series Proms at... that explores spaces outside the Royal Albert Hall and Cadogan Hall. The series matches music to four venues across London with Shakespeareinspired works by Purcell at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at Shakespeare’s Globe in Southwark, Rossini’s Petite messe solennelle at The Chapel, Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, the music of Steve Reich at the Bold Tendencies multi-storey car park in Peckham, and the return of the Proms to the Roundhouse in Camden with new work by British composer David Sawer. Four-hundred years since the death of Shakespeare, the Proms marks the anniversary with a broad survey of music inspired by the Bard, from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet to Hans Abrahamsen’s ‘let me tell you’ and extracts from Kiss Me, Kate. In the year in which the Olympics are staged in Brazil, the Proms celebrates the music and musicians of Latin America with performances from the São Paulo and Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestras, pianists Martha Argerich and Gabriela Montero, conductors Daniel Barenboim and Gustavo Dudamel, cellist Sol Gabetta, and Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Flórez, who appears at the Last Night of the Proms. A vital part of the Proms mission remains, bringing classical music to new audiences; youth music-making and youth audiences are a major focus this year. The hugely popular CBeebies Proms return, and there will be two Proms devoted to BBC Music’s Ten Pieces II, part of a ground-breaking nationwide initiative for schools designed to open up the world of classical music to primary and secondary school children. In the year that we lost two musical pioneers, the Proms pays tribute to Pierre Boulez and David Bowie in two Late Night concerts. Chief Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Sakari Oramo, opens and closes the festival, and in the 50th anniversary year of

his first appearance at the Proms, Bernard Haitink conducts Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 with the London Symphony Orchestra in what will be his 88th Prom. In addition to the six BBC Performing Groups, who are once again central to the festival with a total of 32 performances across the season, the rich wealth of the UK orchestral landscape is on show, including performances from the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Hallé, London Philharmonic and London Symphony Orchestras, Philharmonia, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Ulster Orchestra and many of the UK’s chamber orchestras and ensembles. In the spirit of its founding vision to make the best music available to the widest audience, every Prom is broadcast live on BBC Radio 3, and in 2016, BBC Radio 2 and Radio 6 Music each broadcast multiple Proms. Audiences will be able to watch the Proms on BBC One, BBC Two, BBC Four, CBBC, CBeebies and BBC iPlayer. Proms Extra, the Saturday-evening magazine show, returns to BBC Two for its fourth season. he world certainly had its eyes on our island as one of the biggest decisions was taken by the electorate regarding our future.
Whether LEAVE or REMAIN - personal opinions are now irrelevant. However it was incredibly sad that two camps emerged as a result and a feeling of a divided nation. Friends have argued, colleagues and business relationships have in some cases been tainted and even within families, there were disputes and accusations. Hopefully by the time this article is published and read, tempers would have subdued and relationships whether business or personal, will be back to pre-Referendum. We all need to be positive because it is now out of control; however we do need to support each other. We need a good leader to see us through this transition and towards long-term success. So here’s hoping for minimal pain and maximum benefit. Nearer to home but still on the subject of leaders: Ashish Parmar (Smile Design by Ash). Together with his father, Bhikhu Parmar, they organised and hosted an absolutely terrific event on 24th June which included a full, delicious Indian meal, dancers and dancing, speeches, raffles and a successful auction which in total raised in excess of £20,000 for two charities: Haven House (children’s hospice) and Food For Life Vrindavan in India. As one of Ash’s ardent supporters, it was a privilege to be there, participating at a memorable and fantastic event

with friends and local, business colleagues. We all have stories where we have at some point been helped. Most of us know how it feels to be supported when necessary and the pleasure we feel when we are able to help others; whether a small gesture of kindness or a financial contribution towards a worthwhile cause.
“Friendship is always a sweet responsibility, Never an opportunity.” Khalil Gibran
So looking forward as we go into peak summer months, hopefully the weather will improve; it will stop raining and we can begin to enjoy a wonderful and sunny, July/August. Don’t forget to check out some wonderful open air theatre events in Wanstead Park. If the weather is nice – pack up a picnic plus an umbrella – just in case!… n

he 2016 season will open with the UK premiere of the critically-acclaimed Things To Come. Isabelle Huppert gives a commanding performance in Eden director Mia Hansen-Løve’s smart Paris-set drama, which explores how it feels to have led a full life yet still be searching for answers. Pedro Almodóvar will make a special appearance to introduce his 20th feature film Julieta. Representing a return to the female centric storytelling of many of Almodóvar’s most notable works, such as Volver and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, a younger and older version of the film’s protagonist Julieta confronts the loves and losses of her life. The season will close with the UK premiere of Cannes award-winner Captain Fantastic, which follows the heartfelt story of a father whose idealistic parenting comes under attack when his family is forced to leave their sheltered paradise and enter the world. Two special screenings will celebrate cinema icons – master filmmaker Stanley Kubrick and one of the most inspired and influential British films of all-time Trainspotting. Screen at Somerset House will put Danny Boyle’s controversial 1996 hit back on the big screen in its original 35mm format. On the evening of 11 August, and in celebration of their summer exhibition Daydreaming with Stanley Kubrick, one of ten Kubrick films will be screened as part of the Best of 10 by Kubrick audience vote. The Shining is one of the films that the public can vote for here www.somersethouse.org.uk/film/film4summer-screen-2016/vote In addition, Film4 Summer Screen at Somerset House will stage a typically eclectic mix of movies, from comedy and musical to horror and sci-fi. Sundown DJ sets inspired by the screenings will set the mood before the films begin. Saturday nights will see double bills of Ex Machina and RoboCop, two dark futuristic visions that bring together Man and Machine, and Galaxy Quest and 2015’s The Final Girls (unreleased theatrically in the UK), a pair of comedies that take a fun twist on the sci-fi and horror genres. There will be classics in Sunset Boulevard, the fable of fading movie star Norma Desmond, the fashionable affair of Audrey Hepburn and Fred Astaire in Funny Face and 90’s teen rom-com classic 10 Things I Hate About You. Legendary directors will feature with Quentin Tarantino’s crime caper Jackie Brown and Francis Ford Coppola’s flamboyantly frightening adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Qatar Goodwood Festival
The Qatar Goodwood Festival at Goodwood Racecourse combines topclass international horseracing with a relaxed atmosphere. Goodwood is widely regarded as the most beautiful racecourse in the world and King Edward VII once described the event as a ‘garden party with racing tacked on.’
G
uests can enjoy 13 Group races across the five-day event with prize money totalling over £4.9 million, including the £1 million Qatar Sussex Stakes in which the world’s best horses compete for top honours. The Festival opens on Tuesday with a sevenrace card including two Group 2 contests – the Qatar Vintage Stakes and Qatar Lennox Stakes. The Wednesday highlight is the Qatar Sussex Stakes, which has been won in the past by horses such as Frankel, the highest rated flat horse of all time. Thursday 28 July is Ladies’ Day and fashion takes centre stage. In the Magnolia Cup, a charity race for high-profile lady riders from the world of business and media, the jockey’s silks
are created by top designers such as Vivian Westwood, Beulah and Amanda Wakeley. Friday is a feast for racing fans, with four Group races taking place. For the ladies, a best-dressed competition is the perfect excuse to put on their finest attire. Last year the winner enjoyed an all-expenses-paid trip to South Africa. The Qatar Goodwood Festival reaches its finale on Saturday 30 July, with the Group 1 Qatar Nassau Stakes for fillies and mares being the feature race. The historic Qatar Stewards Cup is another for the speed demons, with around 30 horses in a thrilling cavalry charge down the Goodwood straight. But the Qatar Goodwood Festival is not just about racing; each day guests can enjoy superb food and drink, live music and even complimentary strawberries and cream. This year, food specialist rhubarb will provide the catering in the hospitality areas and in many of the on-course outlets. In addition to the private

hospitality boxes, guests at the Qatar Goodwood Festival can enjoy a choice of four restaurants, each offering a unique dining experience. The Racecourse is divided into three enclosures; the Lennox Enclosure is perfect for families, with its children’s adventure playground and extensive picnic areas, as well as superb bars and eateries. The Gordon Enclosure is situated around the beautiful Sussex Grandstand with its iconic tented roofline. This enclosure provides superb views of the track and access to the Parade Ring, as well as offering hospitality and a brand new food hall and bar. The Richmond Enclosure is exclusively for Members and commands an unrivalled view of the winning post from the impressive March Stand. Dress is typically relaxed elegance - take the joy of fashion and run with it as Goodwood is one of the most photographed events of the season. For the ladies, a summer wedding outfit would work well, while gentlemen are encouraged to wear linen suits and the traditional Panama hat. Taking place atop the stunning South Downs, the Qatar Goodwood Festival is the place to see and be seen. Want to own an Island? Try it out for size first...
Want to own a private island but not sure if you’re ready to commit to homesteading way out in the middle of nowhere? Well, a little island called East Sister Rock Island off the coast of Florida, is just right for you. It is sort of a tester private island. You don’t even have to buy it to try it out; you can rent it.
Y
ou need £7.7 million to buy it. But if you just want to get your feet wet in private island ownership, you can rent the island for £702 a night. East Sister Rock Island is a true private island, so you, and only you, own it in its entirety. But it’s admittedly a very, very small island only a quarter-mile offshore, so you’re not completely isolated from the rest of humanity. The island is surrounded by a coral reef, and there are plenty more worth exploring around the island, the rental listing says. The property also includes a helicopter launch pad and above-ground pool. East Sister Rock Island is a ¼ mile off the Atlantic shore of the city of Marathon. On the private island sits a dream come true getaway home with 5000+ square feet of living area which includes a 2,700 square foot veranda, boat dock (fisherman’s dream), helicopter launch pad and many more surprises. The island is on the Atlantic Ocean breeze and is only a three minute boat ride from the mainland dock and parking. Marathon has numerous shopping centres, fine and casual dining with never a need to dress up. Approximately two hours from Miami and only 45 minutes from Key West, you are right in the heart of the Florida Keys. And if you want to explore the surrounding reefs, they are right off the island. The island itself is built on and surrounded by beautiful coral reefs. Centred on the island 15 Ft. above mean high tide lays the 2500 sq.ft. Bahamian style house with nineteen sliding

glass doors. Surrounding the house is a 2700 sq.ft covered veranda which gives a spectacular 360 degree view providing you with approximately 5000 sq ft of living area. The house has three bedrooms and two bathrooms which will accommodate nine comfortably. Open kitchen and dining area makes for easy living. The entertainment centre has an LCD TV with nearly 100 channels for your entertainment. There is also a regulation sized pool table on the veranda so you can play with the sights and sounds of the ocean all around you. Since the Island is surrounded by coral reef, it makes water sports hard to ignore. Take advantage of snorkeling and scuba diving opportunities from the island itself and/or the charted coral reef just minutes away by boat. For the fisherman, East Sister Rock Island is ideal. Between the island and the mainland; pods of permit and bonefish thrive in the flats. World renowned tarpon fishing at the Seven Mile bridge is only a five minute boat ride to the West. To the South lies the Gulf where the deep sea angler can battle sailfish, dolphin, marlin and wahoo, or simply relax and enjoy the secluded tropical charm of the island. Watch the sun climb out of the ocean in the morning and sink to the most spectacular sunset you have ever seen. Award winner Frances Furlong Rgn Bsc hons Inp. offers a wide range of treatments for Men and Women
Before
After being told by a Consultant Dermatologist in the NHS that I had prematurely aged and damaged my skin by 20 years older than my actual age, I was devastated. I always enjoyed having a year round tan so regularly used sunbeds. My reason for being with the Dermatologists was to receive treatment for skin cancer, thankfully I was treated successfully, as you can imagine I wouldn't dream of using a sunbed again! However once my tan had faded, I looked in the mirror and didn't like what I saw looking back at me, tired, dull lifeless skin, deep lines in my forehead and a heavy looking face.
”
I was recommended by my work colleague to see Frances Furlong of Perfect Skin. Frances specialises in facial aesthetics and I certainly needed a whole face and skin makeover. I was very impressed with my consultation and Frances gave me a realistic plan and timeframe to achieve my desired goals, as you can see from my results I have achieved a lot in 6 months. I am now a client for life, thank you Frances. RK Suffolk

SKIN CONCERNS WITH FRANCES FURLONG
is month I am going to focus on some safe sun tips and facts, most of you will no doubt be heading off for a sun filled holiday.
W
hilst those of us with children are especially good in choosing the right creams, SPF swimsuits and all in one suits, hats, UV tents and brollies, the same can't be said for our own concern on being safe in the sun and avoidance of sunburn. Also addressing some body concerns that when our bodies are more exposed on the beach we are more conscious of and how to remove them quickly and effectively before the holiday season.
SKIN TAGS are small flesh-coloured or pigmented growths that hang off the skin and look a bit like warts. ey are very common, harmless and vary in size from a few millimetres up to 5 cm wide! ey are usually found on the neck, armpits, around the groin, inner thighs or under the breasts. ey can also grow on the eyelids or under the folds of the buttocks. Why Skin Tags Occur Anyone can develop skin tags, but they are particularly common in older people and people with diabetes. Pregnant women may be more likely to develop skin tags, caused by changes in their hormone levels. Some people develop them for no apparent reason. Skin tags tend to grow where skin rubs against skin or clothing. is would explain why they also tend to affect overweight people or younger children who have excess folds of skin. Removing skin tags can be effectively achieved by using Cryotherapy (freezing off). is simple methods takes a few seconds, mild discomfort at site, normally drop off within a week or so depending on the size of the skin tag. MILIA A milium cyst is a small, white bump that typically appears on the nose and cheeks. ese cysts are often found in groups, and in these cases are called Milia. e cysts occur when keratin becomes trapped beneath the surface of the skin. Keratin is a strong protein that is typically found in skin tissues, hair and nail cells. Milia can occur in people of all ages, but they are most common in newborns. ey are typically found on the face and eyelids. What Causes Milia? e cause of Milia in newborns is unknown. It is often mistaken for baby acne, which is triggered by hormones from the mother. In older children and adults, Milia are typically associated with some type of damage to the skin, such as: • blistering due to a skin condition • burns • blistering injuries, such as poison ivy • skin resurfacing procedures, such as dermabrasion or laser resurfacing • long-term use of steroid creams • long-term sun damage
5 0 J U LY 2 0 1 6
Treatments include: • using a sterile needle to pick out the contents of the cyst; • medications, such as topical retinoids (creams that contain vitamin A compounds); • chemical peels; • laser ablation, which involves using a small and focused laser to destroy the cyst; • diathermy, which involves using extreme heat to destroy the cysts; • destruction curettage, which involves surgical scraping and cauterization to destroy the cysts; • cryotherapy, which involves freezing and is the most frequently used method to destroy the cysts. SAFE IN THE SUN TIPS FACT - According to the British Association of Dermatologists a survey carried out showed that 8 out of 10 people are failing to adequately apply sunscreen before going out in the sun. Furthemore, 80% don’t apply sunscreen before going out in the sun or shortly afterwards. Shockingly only 35% of people surveyed would only seek shade if they were hot rather than to avoid burning! ere is no doubt that health campaigns have helped in making people aware of the link between sunburn and skin cancer, but there is a great need to educate on the right sun cream and how to properly apply and reapply. FACT - Men's skin cancer knowledge lags behinds women's, according to the 2016 American Academy of Dermatology survey only 56% of men knew that skin cancer can occur on areas of the skin not typically exposed to the sun, compared with 65% of women. It is so important to regularly check moles and be aware of changes or new marks or lesions to the body. Get your partner or friend to check your back and scalp as it’s obviously a tricky area to scan yourself. Alternatively there are many private clinics that do full body mole screening. FACT - If sun creams feel too heavy and greasy on the face and body we are less likely to want to use them! I am a big fan of Inspira Med SPF 30-50 on the face and body. It's a great anti-ageing cream too so your skin looks less crepey and lined after being in the sun and there is a great anti-ageing After Sun to use after which plumps and hydrates and repairs the skin after sun exposure. Heliocare particularly the gel formulas are great for oily, acne prone skin, there is nothing worse than your sun cream clogging your skin and being left with lots of spots on holiday. It comes in plain and a beautiful tint that gives you a lovely glow and illuminates your skin. High St brands like Nivea are great too especially their protect and fresh sprays which helps to cool your skin too. n

s well as being a highly skilled cosmetic dentist, Ash is also a respected lecturer within the dental industry. Ash has his own training academy and also lectures in many universities across the country including Kings College London. is is where Lily first heard about Smile Design by Ash. “When it came to really thinking about my dental treatment I asked a dental student at my university who he would recommend as I valued his honest opinion. He told me if I was to go anywhere, it should be to Ash. It seems everyone in the dental profession has heard of this special practice and really take inspiration from Ash and his team.” Lily came to Smile Design by Ash after many attempts by her local dentist to repair her damaged front tooth that she chipped in an accident. Looking for a longer lasting option she decided to visit the practice for a free initial consultation even though her journey would take around one hour from her home in Kent. “e practice is spectacular and state-of-the-art, it really added to my first impression.” After her consultation Lily visited the practice for a comprehensive assessment. e full assessment gave us all the detailed measurements and records needed to plan Lily’s treatment. Lily had a very healthy mouth and needed only one hygienist visit before her cosmetic dental journey began. Ash and Lily decided the best way forward was Enlighten teeth whitening and composite veneers to improve the shape of her damaged teeth. “My treatment went smoothly and I actually enjoyed the whole process. Seeing how my teeth were gradually changing and becoming whiter every day was so exciting!” Lily still returns to the practice twice a year for her routine hygienist appointments and her annual check-ups with Ash. “I have told everyone I know about Ash and so far have successfully referred three people to Ash for treatment. Ash is one of a kind. I’ve been stopped in the street by total strangers and complimented on my smile a few times now! I no longer fear coming to the dentist and in fact look forward to coming back to see everyone.” n

URBAN MYTH’S ESSENTIAL TIPS TO ACHIEVE YOUR DREAM KITCHEN
F
licking through the pages of an interiors magazine you would be forgiven for thinking that having the kitchen you have always dreamed about is way out of the budget. But with so many advances in material design and technology, there are now many more affordable ways to achieve your desired look. For Urban Myth every customer is unique and therefore every kitchen is different, but there are some key elements to consider no matter what your budget may be. PLAN YOUR LAYOUT When designing your kitchen it’s a good idea to consider “the work triangle”, the shape created by the 3 essential kitchen workstations; the fridge/freezer, the hob and the sink. You might consider incorporating the hob or sink in a kitchen island to achieve the shortest distance between these areas. Principally you need to ensure the layout works for you and your family. CHOOSE A LASTING FINISH You probably won’t update your kitchen again for another 15 or 20 years so you need to ensure the design does not date appear to float and it’s always a good idea to place lighting over food preparation areas. Separating the lighting circuits in open plan areas can define the dining zone and creates a pleasant ambience.
too soon. Bright colours for your cabinets seriously affects its lifespan. By adding colour interest in more subtle ways you can update these features without needing a whole new kitchen. Coloured backsplashes, feature walls or contrasting island units are all excellent examples of a way to achieve this. BRIGHT IDEAS Lighting can totally transform a space and advances in lighting technology allow for some stunning effects. Incorporating lighting below an island unit will make it 5 8 J U LY 2 0 1 6
GET YOUR TIMING RIGHT A new kitchen is a big project, one that you need to get right. Allow time to get the design exactly how you want, and remember your builders will need to know your kitchen plan in good time to provide the services required to make it work. Our philosophy is that every kitchen we design and install is as good as our last, no matter how much a client spends; they receive the same, high quality, service. We believe that everyone should have their dream kitchen and we have one of the widest ranges available in the industry, so whatever your budget, design or room layout, get in touch. n

THE OLYMPIC POOL FIT FOR FAMILY LIFE
T
he Burchfield family are one of many who have recently made the decision to transform their home and family life with a bespoke swimming pool from Origin Leisure.
THE BURCHFIELD’S STORY After seeing the pleasure that a pool house has brought to the family life of their friends, the Burchfield family set their hearts on having one of their own. Although many friends had invested in an Origin Leisure indoor pool, the family decided that they wanted to conduct some initial research, so set about exploring the market. ey soon found that Origin Leisure offered a bespoke ‘Concept to Completion’ service. e company’s internal group of designers, architects and builders create and construct pool projects from beginning to end. is makes the process hassle free, 6 0 J U LY 2 0 1 6
which was ideal for the family given the hectic lives the Burchfields and their three teenagers lead. With over 35 years’ experience in indoor swimming pool design, Origin Leisure is able to handle every element of the complex design, planning and build. is means that there is no need to source individual contractors. e Burchfields could achieve harmony in their building project and have as much or as little input as they wanted. PLAN During the initial stages the family met with members of the Origin Leisure team, who wanted to bring them one step closer to their dream pool house. e team offered guidance on the different styles available and, based on the Burchfield’s vision, put together comprehensive designs, from initial concepts through to architectural drawings and colour visuals.
origin dps.qxp__ 29/06/2016 12:58 Page 2
As well as making the Burchfield’s vision come to life, Origin Leisure was able to ensure that the proposed plans fell within permitted development. is meant that the building inspector was able to agree the concept following only one visit. Carolyn Burchfield said: “e early meetings were incredibly constructive. We talked about the basic styles that Origin Leisure offers and were impressed with the adaptability that each model offered. We knew roughly what we wanted, and were delighted that every one of our thoughts was considered and built to the first plans. We chose the Olympic pool because of the flexibility of its design, and the style suited our home. We wanted a pool table and a gym, and the initial plans created a perfect space for these.”
THE OLYMPIC RANGE What made the Olympic pool so appealing to the Burchfield family was the popular state-of-the-art features and the different facilities that can be incorporated to suit their requirements. e facilities included an exercise pool with swim jets, a fully fitted sauna, gym facilities and changing rooms. As the range is inspired by the London Olympics, the pools are designed with healthy living in mind, which makes it an ideal design for family life. DESIGN As they worked through the details of every design aspect, Origin Leisure’s structural engineers and technical team offered the Burchfields a range of options to meet their requirements. It was also important to the Burchfields to ensure that the pool house fitted with the style of their home, so the interior and exterior finishings were designed with this in mind. e family found that Origin Leisure was extremely flexible in the planning stages, accommodating the back and forth of ideas as original plans were tweaked and everyone in the family had an input. BUILD roughout the Burchfields build the entire construction was managed by the same helpful team, which meant that there were only familiar faces on their property. e build team dealt with everything, right through to liaising with utility companies.
MAINTAIN Following the build, Origin Leisure’s After Sales service has helped the Burchfields sustain the quality they expected from their pool house. Any minor snags following completion were dealt with in record time and the team have made monthly visits as part of the service contract. is level of service will be ongoing as Origin Leisure offers routine checks for every season of the year. is includes maintenance support, water health checks and much more. AN OLYMPIC SUCCESS e Burchfield family couldn’t be happier with their Olympic pool house. Its versatility provides the perfect place for all family members to unwind. Whether that be a late night swim, a teenage get-together, a quick game of pool or a place to enjoy a glass of wine! When asked if they were satisfied with their new pool house, the answer was: “very much so. Everyone has been incredibly helpful, and it has improved family life in ways we didn’t envisage. Origin know their stuff!”n

THE FALL AND RISE OF THE GAS FIRE
A
few years ago there was gloom and doom in the consumer gas fire industry. e consumer cost of gas had risen around the beginning of the recession and at the time fires were largely inefficient and there was very limited range of styles available. is led to a marked reduction in the number of gas fires sold in the United Kingdom and sadly some manufacturers went out of business with the inevitable predictions about the end of the gas fire as we know it. Wood burning stoves had also become (and still are) very popular for various reasons including their ability to really warm a room or in some cases the whole home. Getting on for ten years later those fire manufacturers that were able to weather the storm responded by developing fires with far greater heating capability and also offering a plethora of different styles to satisfy the demands of most if not all homeowners and interior designers. Many fires are designed to suit existing chimneys however the balanced flue gas fires do not need a chimney and can create a unique ambience in virtually any space. ey’re the perfect focal point, generating a warm, cozy atmosphere, while adding a striking architectural element to any space. Because there are no restrictions in terms of chimney size, balanced flue gas fires are available in a huge range of sizes, shapes and designs. ere are wide fires in a range of widths up to two metres, portrait and landscape models, 2-sided, 3-sided and see-through tunnel fires as well as freestanding contemporary gas stoves and those suitable for including in a more traditional fireplace setting. Although it is possible to install a balanced flue gas fire into a standard brick chimney many are installed into a false chimneybreast. is cleverly conceals the body of the fire and flue revealing just the interior with its realistic fire bed. In many cases the false chimneybreast can also house the TV

above the fire for an ultra sleek contemporary appearance but seek professional advice from a fireplace specialist first. When visiting a fireplace showroom you should now expect to see a range of fires to suit all design needs, as well as trained staff that can understand what you are trying to achieve and offer the necessary advice and guidance. At Ash & Embers you will find gas fires from Drugasar, Ortal, Vision Trimline, Kinder & Gazco amongst others, as well as the extensive range of wood burning stoves. With extensive showrooms located in Abridge the company can help choosing the right fire to suit the room and offer a complete design and installation service to suit most budgets.n

FINE & COUNTRY FEATURE
LAMBOURNE END
“It appeals to all generations and is perfect for small gatherings and large parties.Warm and cosy in the winter, the rooms unfold into the gardens in the summer. We have had some wonderful celebrations here, including toddler parties in the courtyard, teenage parties in the cottage, formal parties in the house, bonfire parties in the paddock and pool and tennis parties by the pizza oven. Having the space around the house to enjoy the environment makes all the difference. Our home functions brilliantly as a modern home for all generations whilst retaining its character and history. There is outside and inside interest for all.
Added to all this is the scope to further maximize the potential granted in the existing planning permissions, which offer a significant extension to the courtyard wing, featuring full-height galleried entrance hall plus the untapped potential of the further outbuilding. Or save the potential for later and just simply enjoy living in this tranquil and sociable environment.”
