MILLENNIAL SAVERS This one’s for you!

M

ichelle Groves, Independent Financial Adviser at Scrutton Bland has some wise words for younger people thinking of starting a pension. News stories are full of gloomy predictions about how tough things will be for millennials - people born between 1980 and 2000 - who are trying to save. Property prices are prohibitively high, with lenders now extending the length of mortgage terms into retirement. Added to which the rising state retirement age means that many people in their twenties and early thirties can expect to be working into their late sixties or even early seventies. Despite the introduction of auto-enrolment that will see as many as nine million extra workers saving through a workplace pension scheme, this is still not enough to guarantee a decent pension. So what advice is there for younger people trying to save towards their pension? Michelle’s advice is clear: ‘Start as early as you can. It doesn’t matter if you can only contribute very small amounts, you can always adjust the payments as your career progresses and your income goes up. e potential for long term capital growth and tax relief will give you a huge advantage over someone who has delayed starting their pension. e most common mistake people make when starting their pension is to wait too long. But there are very good reasons why you will benefit from an early adopter approach.’ A PRACTICAL EXAMPLE Lauren is 20 and a basic rate tax payer when she starts saving for her pension. She makes a gross contribution of £50 per month. Her friend Danielle is a higher rate taxpayer at 40% but waits until she is 40 years old and makes a gross contribution of £100 per month. Both ladies therefore contribute £24,000 to their pensions by age 60. If the pension is invested and grows at 7% per annum with 1% annual charges, Danielle’s pension pot will be

8

F E B RU A RY 2 0 1 7

worth just over £45,000 when she gets to the age of 60. However, Lauren’s pension pot at age 60 would be just over £95,000 – despite the fact that both ladies have paid in the same amount. is is because Laurens funds have been invested for a further 20 years and so have had longer to grow. ese figures are quoted in future terms though, so both Lauren and Danielle will need to consider the impact of inflation on the buying power of their future money. is risk can be reduced, if they increase their pension contributions each year in line with inflation. Lauren and Danielle will both benefit from valuable Pension Tax relief. If they make a net pension contribution from their salary after tax, the pension provider will reclaim 20% of the gross contribution on their behalf and pay it into the pension. For Lauren a £50 gross contribution will only cost her £40 per month with the other £10 being reclaimed via tax relief. For Danielle a £100 gross pension contribution will cost her as little as £60. £20 is reclaimed on her behalf by her pension provider and Danielle can reclaim a further £20 via her tax return. If you are thinking of starting a pension then it makes sense to talk to an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). Scrutton Bland has a team of friendly, experienced and highly qualified IFAs, who will work with you to talk through your options, assess your risk profile and help design a personalised plan for you to meet your financial goals. n

EPPING FOREST, USA!

Copyright: City of London Corporation

D

id you know that there’s an Epping Forest located the other side of the Atlantic? It seems the link winds back to the earliest days of American settlement when George Washington’s great grandfather, William Ball (1615 – c1680), left England for Virginia. His son, Joseph Ball (1649 – 1711), built a house in Lancaster County and named it ‘e Forest’ or ‘Forest Plantation’. is is the property that by the early 19th century is documented as ‘Epping Forest’, possibly ‘after the woods north of London where he had grown up, according to e Lewiston Journal of 20 February 1982. Joseph’s daughter, Mary, married Augustine Washington and their first child, George, later become the President of the United States. ere is some mythologising around the tale of Mary Ball the ‘Rose of Epping Forest’ so it seems appropriate to add romance to the tale and speculate that the ‘giant oaks’ in the gardens of the Epping Forest Plantation may have grown from one of the acorns from Epping Forest in the UK, perhaps carried across the Atlantic all those years ago. In the 20th century, a descendent of the family, Jessie Ball, married wealthy industrialist Alfred I. du Pont who built a luxurious Florida riverfront mansion in the 1920s which he called ‘Epping Forest’ in honour of his wife’s Washington connection. In 1984, the Gate Petroleum Company purchased the Du Pont Estate and restored the mansion to its former splendour. Today it is home to the prestigious Epping Forest Yacht and Country Club. To further the nautical association, the ‘USS Epping Forest’ was named after Mary Ball Washington’s childhood home in 1953. e fabric in the picture is an ‘Epping 1 0 F E B RU A RY 2 0 1 7

Forest’ design and the shield pictured was a commemorative shield presented to Epping Forest by the officers and crew of the USS Epping Forest in June 1963. e shield is usually in the City of London Corporation’s Epping Forest Museum Store, but will be on display at e View to celebrate this unusual US link and to coincide with the USA President’s Day and George Washington’s birthday, on 20 February. Why not take this rare opportunity to pop along and find out more about this fascinating story? e View is Epping Forest’s Visitor Centre, located on Rangers Road, Chingford, E4 7QH and the Exhibition will run from 21 February to 28 February (closed Monday) from 10am – 5pm. ere are two other events taking place at e View this month, during the half term; Join the Discover London’s Book Swap on Saturday 11 February, 12noon – 4pm. Swap a book, listen to a magical Forest story teller and enjoy some fun arts and crafts. Or help keep the skipping rope turning at the High Low Dolly Pepper family skipping event on ursday 16 February from 2pm-4pm. n

INTERVIEW WITH CHIGWELL’S FINEST DR. ASHISH B. PARMAR WORDS: MICHELLE B. HARRIS

A

sh Parmar is firmly established as one of Chigwell’s most famous dentists. His clients are the who’s who of the area including many celebrities from our TV reality series: e Only Way is Essex. However his expertise and highly regarded status as an outstanding dentist, goes far beyond our Essex borders. In addition to his practice, he trains dentists from all over the country through his master classes via e Academy by Ash. Having invested over £250k on his own dentistry training and professional development, he has sourced and been trained by renowned international experts. Ash is therefore educated to the pinnacle of dental excellence by the respective masters in their fields. Michelle: Was there a specific event that determined your pursuit of a dental career? Ash: It was a very positive work experience. I was studying for my A levels and had the opportunity for a placement at a dental practice in Hornchurch. e dentist was an outstanding professional; kind, gentle and his patients truly appreciated how he positively affected their lives and confidence. Seeing this as an impressionable teenager confirmed my choice. Michelle: You have made an impact on the community. Not only with your dental practice and how you help others, but by your presence and interaction with the local community. Most people either know you or have heard of you. What’s your inspiration? Ash: Am very much inspired by those who have helped others such as the dentist in Hornchurch. Gandhi is also 1 2 F E B RU A RY 2 0 1 7

an obvious choice. He was gentle and mild-mannered but he made a difference. My relationship with my family and how I been brought up; it’s important to help others and I have a sense of social responsibility. Also charity has always been a central theme and ongoing aspect to my work. Michelle: People are nervous about going to the dentist but here at your beautiful practice, you have turned it into an art form. I don’t know of any dental practice that is more like a spa. I was always nervous about going to the dentist… but not anymore. Ash: Yes, things are different now. Most people of a certain generation have had that fear stay with them all their lives. We have NUCALM to help people relax, plus headphones so any dental noise is blocked out by music. Michelle: e practice’s ambience is calm and serene, probably because everybody is relaxed. Ash: at was very much my mission statement that people should even enjoy their treatments, therefore have regular check-ups and hopefully avoid any major problems. Prevention is always the best option in order to avoid something minor becoming more serious. Plus I enjoy helping dentists to achieve their goals through training and professional development. n

BACKSTAGE WITH OAK-TREE

We talk creative and performing arts with The Oak-Tree Group of Schools

T

he Oak-Tree Schools comprise Braeside in Buckhurst Hill, Coopersale Hall School in Epping, Normanhurst School in North Chingford, and Oaklands School in Loughton. As well as enjoying an excellent record of academic success, the schools within e Oak-Tree Group are becoming known for providing numerous creative opportunities for their pupils to complement the education and to provide a more rounded education. Braeside is an all-through school for girls from 2½ to 16 where creative arts are taught all the way through school up to GCSE level. Headmistress Claire Osborn explains, “An appreciation of creativity is a vital part of a child’s development. In the Autumn Term our senior pupils took part in a House Drama competition. It was a fantastic showcase of talent with the four Houses putting forward their best actors to perform a play of their choice. e four plays were ‘Mean Princesses’, ‘Peter Pan’, ‘A Triple Negative’ and ‘Snow White’. It was a lovely evening enjoyed by friends and families.” Kaye Lovejoy, Headmistress of Coopersale Hall School in Epping, says, “Much work has been put into developing our Performing Arts department this year and the children have been taking advantage of the newly refurbished studio. It’s a fantastic space in which they can rehearse for the many shows and performances and there is now a suite of computers to learn the more technical side of music. e junior choir is available for all pupils in Years 3 to 6, and weekly orchestra rehearsals include children who take instrumental tuition as well as those just keen to get involved”. Claire Osborn, also Headmistress of Normanhurst School, comments, “We are incredibly proud of our Art and DT departments. Our pupils are given so many opportunities 1 8 F E B RU A RY 2 0 1 7

Braeside pupils at the Performing Arts Club throughout the year to use their skills to compete locally and nationally in competitions. Recently some of our pupils’ artwork was entered into the ISA National Art Competition alongside some of the best artwork submitted from across the country. It was judged by a team of professional artists and I was delighted that our pupils won awards in two categories – KS3 and KS4 Sketchbook and KS3 and KS4 Photography.” Sue Belej, Headmistress of Oaklands School in Loughton, is aware of the importance of music throughout the school; “Music is a large part of school life at Oaklands. It helps the younger children with their counting, ability to listen and concentrate and social skills. e children have several opportunities throughout the year to perform within the local community. e school choir gathered recently at St Mary’s Church on Loughton High Road and I was very proud of the way that our pupils sang so confidently to the large audience, including the local Mayor”. Matthew Hagger, Group Principal of the Oak-Tree Schools, explains, “Over the past few years there has been an emphasis on developing the creative side of the syllabus. Art, Music and Drama now play key parts in the pupils’ education both during the normal school day and within our extensive programme of after school and holidays clubs”. n

WHEN A BILLIONAIRE ‘TRUMPED’... WORDS: MICHELLE B. HARRIS

It’s certainly been a very interesting start to 2017!

T

rump’s inauguration and subsequent decisions as a result of pre-electoral promises, has certainly dominated the headlines and rather like Marmite, you either love him or hate as very few appear to be indifferent. Meryl Streep certainly made herself very politically clear at the Golden Globes with an impassioned speech which looked spontaneous but am sure was adequately rehearsed. Despite her words and almost breathless and husky exasperation, the one who fascinated me the most was Vince Vaughn. If you check him out on YOUTUBE it is incredible that he was able to stop blinking. He looked a combination of shocked and horrified whilst Mel Gibson looked aghast. President Trump made his highly-publicized speech, which millions if not billions, saw across the planet. So with all this attention, I couldn’t help being amused by his plagiarising of Bane (villain) in Christopher Nolan’s Batman film: ‘e Dark Knight Rises’ which came out in 2012. In a recent tweet, President Trump refers to his writing of the speech on 18th January but according to a White House official and noted by e Independent, it was written by Stephen Miller and Steve Banon.

"We take Gotham from the corrupt! The rich! The oppressors of generations who have kept you down with myths of opportunity, and we give it back to you… the people." Bane.

And President Trump, with a focussed stare as if to say, I really mean this:

“…give it back to you…THE PEOPLE...”

2 4 F E B RU A RY 2 0 1 7

e new First Lady, Melania Trump looked outstanding in her powder blue dress. Apparently certain haute couture designers turned down her custom but it didn’t matter, she looked absolutely fabulous and just very slightly aloof from it all. Living with a man who probably has an equatorial ego cannot be easy but there are the obvious financial compensations plus of course now, he will be very much distracted from the home front. I actually admire her stamina despite the bad press she also received as part of a certain damning campaign. If nothing else and with all the fears and analyses as to what President Trump will or might do next, the very least we can assume is that we don’t know. As the Presidential personification of the loose cannon, anything and everything is possible and for many other reasons too, he is fascinating. I wonder what’s next from our buddies and the Trumpeter across e Pond… It’s the ultimate cliff hanger… n

s well as the usual visual displays, the sounds of India will surround visitors entering the steamy glasshouse. From the tones of milkmen’s bicycle bells and newspaper boys, to the playful voices of school children, temple bells, and muezzin calls, the Indian street will be brought to life. This visual feast of colour will also feature elaborate floral displays inspired by a typical Indian market, including Kew’s own decorative rickshaws. An infographic map will transport the visitor from the dreary British winter to the vibrancy and colour of India. The map, created by Tonwen Jones, includes drawings of India’s natural vegetation and landscapes. This year’s pond display will explode with intense hues in a larger than life floral arrangement made up of Vanda, Dendrobium, Cymbidium and Paphiopedilum orchids, marrying traditional and modern culture. Elisa Biondi, Princess of Wales Conservatory Supervisor, RBG Kew says, “This year’s Orchids festival is going to be something really special and different. It will immerse visitors in the sights, senses and sounds of India’s exotic and vibrant culture creating an explosion of unique and colourful beauty. We hope this journey will highlight the significance of plants in all walks of life, from the spiritual and medicinal to the textiles and cuisine, all the while showing the importance of plant diversity and Kew’s work to protect, conserve and study plants.” Entrance to the Festival will be free and included in the daily entrance ticket. 2017 is also the year the UK and India will celebrate a major bilateral year of cultural exchange presented by the British Council. TRAVEL

Rio de Janeiro

A New World to discover Since the Rio 2016 Olympics this incredible city has become one of the most popular holiday hotspots for 2017.

R

io de Janeiro, known as the marvellous city (“Cidade Maravilhosa”) by the local Cariocas, proudly offers stunning culture and history, white sandy beaches, carnivals, amazing shopping opportunities, incredible nightlife…and views to die for. Rio de Janeiro is the city it is today because of its historical past. Portuguese rulers were the first ones to rule Rio as they landed on the soil of Guanabara Bay in 1502. The bay forms the opening of a river, hence the name ‘Rio de Janeiro’ which means ‘River of January’. When Brazil achieved independence in 1889, Rio was named the capital. The statue of Christ the Redeemer (Cristo Redentor) is part of the new edition of the Seven Wonders of the World. Acting as a representative of Rio, the attraction, inaugurated in 1931, was built approximately 38 metres high and covers 710 metres of the Corcovado Mountain, providing panoramic views of Rio beyond compare. The world famous Rio de Janeiro Carnival is celebrated during the four days previous to the beginning of Lent. A trip to Rio de Janeiro is incomplete without experiencing the shimmer and jiggle of brilliant samba dancers - a great opportunity enjoy Rio’s party culture. Many people travel to Rio for its famous beaches like Ipanema - the wealthier sibling of the famous Copacabana beach, located between Leblon and Arpoador regions. For shopaholics, shopping in Rio is a dream come true! The malls are home to some of the most famous brands in the world. The city also has a number of markets well worth a visit. The history and culture, the sandy beaches and the glitz of the city have all made Rio what it is today. The people are friendly, laid-back and amazing hosts, with tourists welcomed with supreme warmth and friendliness. www.riodejaneiro.com

ZUMBA Originatin ng from Latin dance styles, Zumba is a cardiovascular rdiovascular and aerobic exercise routtine that infuses exercise with dance and choreographyy. The workout alteernates between fast-paced and slow-paced ed dance moves which are practiced d in time to Latin rhythms. Among the dance ance form’s for influences are salsa, hip p-hop and rumba. This South American workout work tones the body through its u use of resistance exercises which effectively ely amount to interrval val training due to the varrying ying speeds at which they are car carried out. CIRCUIT TRAINING TR RAINING Circuit training involves a number of exercises – or ‘stations’ – which are performed one affter ter the other, with a short rest in between. Exercises varry, y, but tend to include aerobic exercises such as shuttle runs, star jumps and burpees, along with strength moves such as pushups, squats and lunges. The nature of a circuit training class means that, rather than raising your heart rate and keeping eeping it high for the duration of the class, it gives you more of an ‘interval v training’ effect, where you mix intense bursts of activity with recovery periods. It is a verryy effective way of improving aerobic fitness. BO OXERCISE/KICKBO XERCISE/KICKBO OXERCISE Boxercise and kickboxercise are derivatives of boxing and kickboxing and use th he drills and techniques of their respective sports in a non-contact setting, u usually in the form of a circuit. For example, you might find yourself shad dowboxing, skipping, using punch bags or teaming up with a partner to punch p or kick focus pads. Both are considered one of the best all-round d high intensity exercise classes to get you in great shape. One study found that t people felt more calm, more focused and less anxious affter ter a kickboxing kickboxxing class. T Taking aking out all that aggression on a punch bag can be a great stresss reliever! 41 41 6F EJBA RU 2 0Y1 7 NAUR Y AR 2016

PILA ATES Pilates is a for form of exercise which works on restoring storing cor correct posture and alignment ent (which are under constant attack from our seated, sedentary lifestyles), strengthening the muscles that hat stabilise the joints, and workingg par particularly strongly on the abdominals nals and back. The movement exercises are ver very precise, focused and d controlled, and performed on an exercise mat in a class context. YOGA Y OGA Yoga Y oga strengthens streengthens muscles, improves joint flexibility bilityy, y, and enhances balance, coordination oordination and posture th hrough a series of diverse poses oses (or ‘asanas’). There are many types of yoga. For example, ple, ashtanga yoga is more energetic rgetic than viniyoga. Yoga workss on the whole body Yoga without favvouring one side, and includes for orrward ward and backward bending, twists, wists, balances and inversions.Movements .Movements are coordinated ed with the breath. Different types ypes of yoga have verryy different focuses ocuses and approaches – so it’s best est to watch a class or speak to the he instr instructor before you take par part. DANCE D ANCE Dance classes are a lot of fun and very so ociable – plus the high concentration on factor means you’ll hardly be aware that you are doing a ‘workout’, o on not if you are spending half the class tryying to figure out which way to o spin or how to shimmyy.. That said, there ere are so many different types of dance to try that you are sure to get the hang ang of one of them. Ballet sculpt class won’t teach you to be a ballerina, and salsa aerobics won’t give you the skills to take to the floor like a dance d champion, but what they will do, is give you a taste of the benefits of dance and appeal of the ‘real thing’.

INVISALIGN CLEAR BRACES A LIFESTYLE SOLUTION

A

re you one of the millions of adults who are unhappy, self-conscious or even embarrassed of smiling confidently? Would you like to straighten crooked teeth, but not have to wear metal braces for a year or two? Invisalign might just be the perfect solution for you. WHAT IS INVISALIGN? Invisalign is one of the leading removable braces systems in the world. e treatment involves a series of clear, removable aligners which are worn constantly, but can be removed when eating, drinking or when going to an important social event or business meeting. is makes Invisalign a very versatile braces option, to suit your lifestyle. CAN I SEE A PREVIEW OF MY END RESULT? Absolutely. Using a computer software system called Clincheck, the dentist can show you how your teeth will gradually move in to a well-aligned arch, and also predict the number of months the treatment will take.

WHO PROVIDES INVISALIGN TREATMENT AT SMILE DESIGN BY ASH? Dr Luk Athwal is one of the senior dentists at Smile Design By Ash, and has a special interest in Invisalign. He has had extensive training and experience in braces treatments, and will guide you if Invisalign is suitable for you. In some cases, it is best to have fixed braces with an orthodontist. Luk is a very caring, friendly and professional dentist. WHAT CAN BE DONE AFTER BRACES TO ACHIEVE THE PERFECT SMILE? Once teeth have been straightened, cosmetic contouring and teeth whitening can create the ideal final result. is involves some minor artistic reshaping of the edges of the teeth, and teeth whitening for a more attractive and younger looking smile. DO I NEED A RETAINER AT THE END OF THE BRACES TREATMENT? Yes. A fixed retainer will secure the teeth in their new position to maintain the straight new smile. Alternatively, a removable plastic retainer can be worn at nighttime indefinitely. n

HEALTH & BEAUTY

A-Z OF YOUR 2017 HEALTH AND BEAUTY KICKSTART PART 11 WITH FRANCES FURLONG

T

his Month continues the A - Z of health and beauty tips, simple changes and positive steps can make really big changes to our skin, health and mental well being to ensure you start 2017 in the best possible way? Winter can be tough on our bodies but a few simple lifestyle changes can help us to stay healthy, happy and ready for the year ahead! THIS MONTH FEATURES M - Z! M - is for migraine relief, so many individuals suffer with this sometimes debilitating condition. Unless you have experienced a migraine many don't have much sympathy, feeling it's only a worse version of a headache that could go with an aspirin! A number of factors may trigger migraines, including hormonal changes in women due to fluctuations in oestrogen. Foods like cheese, processed or salty foods, additives, drinks, stress, sensory stimulations, bright lights, loud atmospheres. In recent years many individuals respond very well to muscle relaxing injections into the frown, scalp and base of neck. N - is for nose reshaping, rhinoplasty is a very popular surgical procedure, however in recent years some individuals have been able to make slight changes to their noses with a very small amount of dermal fillers. I have got great results for people who have a slight bump or have a slight wonky appearance to the nose straight on, without going through unnecessary surgery. O - optometrist check up. During a comprehensive eye exam, your eye doctor does much more than just determine your prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses. He or she will also check your eyes for common eye diseases, assess how your eyes work together as a team and evaluate your eyes as an indicator of your overall health. Make your appointment today as it could make significant changes without you even realising there was a problem. P - is for pulsed light treatments, an excellent way of reducing redness to the face. Exposure to the cold climate, excessive alcohol consumption over the winter period can play havoc with the skin. A course of pulsed light treatments helps to break down the red pigment and broken capillaries giving you a more even complexion. Q - Q10 and vitamin C topical cream from Obaji is a great non aggressive but medical strength boost for the skin. e combination of the two helps as it is a power antioxidant, energies the skin, stimulates cell turnover, promotes collagen and healing and also is a natural skin brighter to help discolouration. R - rough skin in the winter. Generally people complain of rough skin to their elbows and knees and rough patches to the backs of the arms and face. Using washes or creams that contain glycolic acid can help to peel off this rough texture, or try in clinic peeling for a quick and easy solution. S - is for skin product swap. In the same way we switch to warmer clothes in the winter, our skincare regime needs a few tweaks too – remember that colder air is drier

air. "Consider using a serum or oil underneath your day or night cream for extra moisture," says the skin experts. "Unless you've got especially sensitive skin, exfoliate twice a week to remove any dry skin, but always follow with a moisturiser. Dead skin cells can't absorb moisture so it's important to remove them." Sensitive skin is even more prone to irritation in winter so look for products free from colour-ants, fragrance and irritants. T - Tone up your body with resistance bands, a simple and effective home work out that can really get results for those with very little time, simple routines can help banish bingo wings and help you get a flatter stomach. U - Under arm sweating or hyperhydrosis can be a very embarrassing condition, muscle relaxing injections can work very well to this area and helps reduce excessive sweating, allowing individuals to wear the types of clothes they want. V - is for veins, simple broken capillaries to the facial area can be treated with diathermy or lasers. Try to avoid activities that cause vasodilation like extremes of temperatures and not using daily SPF protection. Leg veins are treated more successfully with high powered lasers or surgical techniques to remove varicose veins. W - is for water. It's incredibly important to get plenty of liquid during the winter months "With the central heating blasting, air can get hot and dry, and hydration levels can drop fast. e body's thirst response can diminish as blood vessels constrict to keep blood and heat in the body's core. is fools the body into thinking it's properly hydrated when it's not.". X - treme cold weather is more likely to make us suffer from aches and pains, partly due to a lack of activity. A gentle walk can help, but another option is to take a warm bath with salts or essential oils, whilst gently exercising your joints in the water. Y - Youthful treatments to naturally enhance, mesotherapy vitamin and anti-ageing facial injections can really boost your skin quality and treat the skin directly at the problem zones. A course of three treatments given every two weeks can boost the skin following the winter months. Z - Zinc supplements or food including Zinc is found in cells throughout the body. It helps the immune system fight off invading bacteria and viruses. e body also needs Zinc to make proteins and DNA, the genetic material in all cells. During pregnancy, infancy, and childhood, the body needs zinc to grow and develop properly. n Top 10 High Zinc Foods 1) Grass-fed Beef 2 Kefir or Yogurt 3) Lamb 4) Chickpeas (Garbanzo beans) 5) Pumpkin seeds

6) Cashews 7) Cocoa powder 8) Chicken 9) Mushrooms 10) Spinach

“The Braun Silk-Epil 9 can be used wet or dryy,, so I first tried it out while haavving a soak in the tub. I was prepared for epilation to smart, because I haavve quite sensitiivve skin, and while I did wince as the first few leg hairs were tweezed out at the root by the revolving head, overall, it wasn’t too painful, and as I got the hang of it, it I got a lot faster. My follicles were a little red after but they soon calmed down, and I was impressed with the long-lasting effects compared to shaaving. The device also comes with a range of interchangeable attachments - I used the sensitiivve exfoliation br ush on my legs, which helps prevent ingrown hairs (I haavven’t seen any yet), and the deep exfoliation br ush is great for a weeklyy thorough o o g face cleanse s .” Braun Silk-Epil 9 SkinSpa 4 in 1 Wet and Dr y Epilator, £179.99, Argos (www.argos.co.uk)

“NOW I CAN EAT WHATEVER I WANT.” WORDS BY JENNIFER SPENCER

L

osing teeth can have a devastating impact on your quality of life. Wearing a loose fitting denture is something most people expect when they lose their teeth, but sadly tolerate. One of the greatest pleasures in life is eating and enjoying food. We often hear that due to badly fitting dentures, many patients struggle to eat their favourite foods. Just like our patient David… When David first came to see us, he complained that he had worn several dentures in his lifetime, all of which were loose. It was becoming a big problem for David to eat properly. Questions like “Can you order a steak in a restaurant?” or “Can you bite into an apple confidently?” are questions David once answered “no” to. After discussing David’s treatment options, he decided to have an upper bridge and a new precision fitting denture with Ash. Using Ash’s knowledge and experience and with the help

of our experienced dental technician, David can now eat confidently. With a huge smile, he said: “Now I can eat whatever I want!” Not only is this satisfying for us as a team, but life changing for David. “I’m so pleased with my treatment, I’ve had loads of compliments from work colleagues, I have even recommended they visit Smile Design By Ash - thank you so much.” “I actually enjoyed the experience and nothing was painful at any point. Ash and the team are always so professional.” If you are someone who is tired of hesitating when looking at a menu, and want to be able to enjoy the pleasure of eating the foods you love, please call 0208 5000544 for a FREE INITIAL CONSULTATION; we will be happy to help you make the right decision. n

Award winner Frances Furlong Rgn Bsc hons Inp. offers a wide range of treatments for Men and Women

I inherited my weak top lip from my mum, when I looked at my face in my early twenties it really started to bug me! I have quite large facial features and always thought my lips should have been slightly bigger so my face looked balanced. I certainly did not want over filled extremely fake looking lips, just better suited for my face shape. My friend has been a client of Frances Furlong of Perfect Skin for 5 years now and she came highly recommended. At the consultation I was able to take time to explain how I wanted my lips, my concerns of still wanting my lips to feel and look natural. Frances explained that in order to achieve the look I desired it would not happen on the first treatment, she advised a smaller amount of product over three sessions, this way I was more in control of the volume and plumping effect, also they wouldn't feel hard and lumpy which is a problem when you have loads put in at the first treatment. Over the time of my sessions my lips looked and felt more plump and the pillow look which I desired was achieved. Thank you Perfect Skin I am over the moon… Melissa - Chigwell, Essex

i inter may be bleak and dark, but i the perfect time to switch it’s o to the power of lighting on a illuminate rooms with and everything, from razzle-dazzle new effects to simple bulbs which shine a spotlight on a feature, or even change a mood. “Lighting really matters in a home and can literally transform it,” promises George Clarke, architect and TV’s popular property presenter of George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces and The Restoration Man. “I’ve seen great buildings ruined by bad lighting schemes, and great lighting improve bad buildings. It can truly make that much difference. What’s fantastic these days, is that there are affordable, effectiivve ways of personally tailoring lighting schemes, using technology like smart phones and tablets, which a decade ago, would haavve costs thousands.” Clarke, who’s currently working with Philips lighting, believes good lighting doesn’t just haavve a visual effect, but can also help improve our wellbeingg.. ““Ar Artificial light can now mimic natural light and light systems can be programmed to suit our body rhythms. Replicating a soothing sunset glow in the evening can help people relax and encourage relaxation and sleep, while gradually increasing light levels in the morning to mimic sunrise can encourage us to wake in a more gentle fashion. Lights conjuring the effect of natural sunlight indoors may offset the negative effect of a grey day outside. There’s almost no limit to what can be achieved.”

LIGHT BULB MOMENTS Recent research by B&Q revealed that 85% of us haavve no idea which bulb brightness is best to suit a task or set a mood. Clarke ggiivves his gguide to LED lighting... “In general, people are scared by lighting and confused by all the terminologyy. That’s a real shame because LED lighting is so versatile these 86 2F FEEBB R UAAR R 2 0 12 70 1 7 Y Y RU

days. For instance, there’s a misconception m that it’s a cold light, but the key to o success is selecting the right colour temperature of the bulb, bulb which is measured in a unit called a kelvin (k),” he explains. “Bulbs with higher kelvin vaalue create a cooler, crisp white light (4000k) which aree suitable for practical areas, like a kitchen or bathroom, oom, while those with a lower kelvin value (3000k) produce a warmer w white light more appropriatee for living v rooms. “If you want to easily change thee ambience, there are inno ovvations like a Philips Scene ene Switch Switc LED light bulb (£9.99, Amazon) which h allows you to use your light switch to flic flick between three different light levels, from bright to naturall to a soft warm light. This bulb can be used on an existingg light g [[simply py using your normal light switch to change between settings] and remo ovves the need for a dimmer.” SEE THE LIGHTS: Playing with light has never

LIGHT TOUCH ““A A common mistake people make is only haavving v light coming from one source - for instance, simply haaving a ceiling light. In realityy,, good lighting is achieved by creating different layers of light which w conjure variation, texture and atmosphere,” says Clarke. “Clever accent lighting - wall sconces,, floodlights, recessed lights or track lighting - can fl dramatically change a space and highlight keyy areas or architectural features. Even just hangggingg an adjustable pendant light over a dining tablee will define the space and make it feel more intimaate. “Coloured lighting is also a fantastic way to add a a ‘wow’ factor, especially if the light source is hidden. h Use coloured light strips abo ove kitchen units, but, to get the maximum effect, keep the background a neutral white as a contrast.” SEE THE LIGHTS: Nothing makes more of o a statement than an intricately designed chandeelier and, for a modern approach, fit one in an unexpected place like a kitchen or a bedroom m. Debenhams has an impressiivve lighting collecttion with the added bonus that many pieces are cuurrently reduced online. A Scarlett Black Chandelier, with w smoke and clear glass crystal strands, is reducced from £395 to £316, and a Penelope Pendant Ceiling Light, featuring layers of smoke glass cylinders, reduced from £320 to £256. Cluster lights aree ultrafashionable and its contemporary Harrison Cluster C Ceiling Light is down from £150 to £120. Ve Very’s e Glass Cloche Ceiling Light, £99, blends modeern with traditional style, with a clear glass dome showcasing a cluster of light strings, and anotther winner in its collection is a Forest Pendant wiith etched tree design, design £19. £19 Dar Lighting, Lighting which has nationwide stockists, has super pendant lightss and I particularly like its To Tower Cluster Pendant, RRP R £118.80. Pared-back designs allow materials to t shine and B&Q’s Jonas Wire Copper Pendant Ceilin ng Light, £47, is a good example of that approacch. Urban Cottage Industries, specialists in vintagge and industrial lighting, which offers bespoke lights, l has a funky Green Large Balloon Light Bulb Cage, from £55.44. Bare bulbs are very much on-trend, o as are metallic finishes and sculptural shap pes. Ta Table lights are a really good wayy to partition areass in a room, so a lightt on a side table behind a sofa will w create a visual break in an open plan room. “Do bear b in mind colours and surfaces refl flect and absorb b light in differentt way ays. URBAN MYTH

KITCHENS MADE IN-HOUSE, TAILORED FOR YOUR HOME

T

he word ‘bespoke’ is often used to describe designer kitchens and it refers to one that has been made from scratch, designed purely with the buyers needs in mind and manufactured to fit exactly into the required space. Your desired kitchen is totally built around you rather than your ideas having to adapt to an off the shelf version. You would be forgiven for thinking that ‘bespoke’ also has to mean expensive. At Urban Myth we believe that every kitchen has to be different, unique to those that will use it. at’s why, as well as an extensive range of kitchens from Germany and Italy, we also have our own range ‘Urban Life’. ese kitchens are made in our own factory by skilled craftsmen using state of the art machinery. By having a factory “in-house” our designers are able to create a kitchen exactly fitted to your space at a price you might not expect. Superior quality kitchens designed to your exact specification. From the very first meeting we invest a great deal of time learning about your needs and lifestyle. It’s not until 6 8 F E B RU A RY 2 0 1 7

our designers feel they understand your complete wish-list that they will begin to suggest kitchen ranges and styles that they feel will match. With an almost endless list of materials, finishes and colours to choose from, no two Urban Myth kitchens are the same. Total peace of mind. We want to take the stress out of commissioning a new kitchen, and your designer and their team are on hand to answer any questions you may have to ensure you are completely satisfied throughout the entire process. In short, we work with you from concept to completion to deliver a kitchen that meets your exact requirements and a service that exceeds your expectations.
