OUT & ABOUT

PENSION FREEDOMS - AN ATTRACTIVE OPTION? The retirement landscape is changing. James Wright, Financial Planner at Scrutton Bland is your guide through the choices to be made.

I

t’s almost three years since the new ‘pension freedoms’ were introduced but a recent survey* suggests that there are still many people who are unsure about what they can and can’t do with their pension funds. Firstly, let’s be clear that we are talking about private pensions here, not the state pension. Your state pension will be paid to you on a monthly basis when you retire, (the state retirement age is 65 for all workers and is due to rise to 66 by 2020 and 67 between 2026 and 2028). You cannot claim your state pension any earlier than that, nor can you withdraw any part of that as a lump sum. ere are also special rules for defined benefit or final salary schemes. e summary below does not apply to such schemes. If you have a workplace or personal pension then you can take 25% of your pension pot tax-free once you reach 55 years of age. is can be taken as a lump sum, or you can opt for a staggered release. So if you had a pension pot of £100,000 you could withdraw £25,000 in one go, or £5,000 per year over five years. You will still have to pay tax at your current rate on the remaining 75% of your pension investment. Flexi-Access Drawdown (or FAD) allows for the full 25% tax free lump sum to be taken, followed by any level of withdrawals from the rest of your pension investment. You choose where to invest and

6

FEBRUARY 2018

what income to take. No withdrawals have to be taken but they will be liable to income tax when they are. It is worth noting that in any tax year, if income is taken from a FAD plan the annual allowance for pension contributions will reduce to £4,500. In addition to the changes to retirement options, there have been new rules regarding the charges on death. If you die before the age of 75 your pension can be passed on as a lump sum free of tax. Where death occurs after 75 the fund can be passed on for your beneficiaries to make withdrawals from, but these withdrawals will be taxed at their marginal rate of tax. ere is therefore an argument that if you have an estate greater than the inheritance tax nil rate band (currently £325,000) you should deplete your other assets before accessing pensions in retirement. is ensures you maximise the assets passed on to your beneficiaries after you die. Although bear in mind that if you die after 75 and your beneficiaries are additional rate income tax payers (45%) they could end up paying more tax as Inheritance Tax is only at 40%. You can see that whilst the pension freedom rules are aimed at simplifying pensions and adding flexibility, in certain circumstances they may seem more complicated. If you are considering your retirement options, obtaining professional independent financial advice is key. n

MARCH OPEN MORNINGS AT THE OAK-TREE SCHOOLS

A

sneak peek behind the scenes as the local group of independent schools prepare for an influx of visitors.

e Oak-Tree Schools have seen more and more families choose their brand of independent education over recent years. With Open Day season here again, Braeside, Coopersale Hall, Normanhurst and Oaklands have been preparing to open their doors to welcome the many hopeful prospective families looking for the best education for their children. At Braeside School in Buckhurst Hill, Headmistress Claire Osborn will be greeting the prospective parents; “I am very much looking forward to the Braeside Open Day. I’m always very pleased to be able to discuss Braeside’s reputation as a local school with many excellent academic achievements. e developments that have been made since Braeside became part of the Oak-Tree Group in 2015, including a brand new Kindergarten class, kitchens and Studio, have been very positive. We now share curricular and extra-curricular activities with Normanhurst, which benefit both sets of pupils when they work collaboratively.” Braeside’s Open Days are on Tuesday 6 March from 9.15am at the Seniors and Wednesday 7 March at 9.15am at the Juniors. “Parents value the opportunity to take a guided tour with our confident pupils as they give an honest and impartial view of what school is really like”, comments Kaye Lovejoy, Headmistress of Epping’s Coopersale Hall School. “In my presentation I give a flavour of the quality of our education from the earliest ages of 2½ up to our intensive preparation for senior schools at age 11. e recent successful inspection report gives me

1 2 FEBRUARY 2018

so many positive comments that I can highlight. Parents are usually interested to hear about the wrap around care that we offer at Coopersale Hall including breakfast and after school clubs from 7.30am to 6pm.” Coopersale Hall’s Open Morning is on Tuesday 6 March at 9.15am. At Normanhurst School in North Chingford, Headmistress Claire Osborn enjoys talking to families about how the school caters for all ages from 2½ to 16. She comments, “the parents and children who visit our Open events are very impressed with the quality of our education. My presentation focuses on the many opportunities available to all ages including the strong academic teaching, extra-curricular clubs and excellent GCSE results. e Head Boy and Head Girl also speak about aspects of life at Normanhurst and how much they enjoy their learning.” Normanhurst’s Open Morning is on Friday 9 March at 9.15am for all years. Sue Belej, Headmistress of Oaklands School in Loughton, is used to talking to groups of parents bringing newborn babies to the Open Mornings as registration for places often happens at the earliest possible age. She explains, “On Open Morning we don’t make many changes to our normal working day as it is important for parents to get an impression of the school as it really is and not as a series of showcase events that some bigger senior schools prepare. e pupils enjoy acting as guides and I’m looking forward to talking about our recent very successful inspection report.” e Oaklands Open Morning is on ursday 8 March at 9.15am. n

here are more hidden depths to this ancient woodland than even the greatest local expert might know. Why not test your knowledge and brush off some winter cobwebs with a stroll and uncover some of its lesser known locations and historic connections. For example, did you know that Epping Forest was the setting for the filming of the ‘black knight’ scene in Monty Python’s e Holy Grail. You can visit the area just by Loughton Brook at the Prince of Wales Bridge. Also, Full Metal Jacket was filmed at Fairmead Road and the Forest is often the backdrop for television programmes and adverts. Wanstead Flats, in the south of the Forest, is an area full of wartime history; look out for the old barrage balloon tethers near to the football pitches at Capel Road. Football has taken place on Wanstead Flats for over 125 years and it is now the second largest concentration of football pitches in Europe, second only to Hackney Marshes nearby. Wanstead Park was once the garden of one of London’s grandest mansions and had royal visitors regularly. e owner, Catherine Tynley-Long and her husband William Pole-Wellesley (nephew to the Duke of Wellington), are reputed to have introduced the idea of a ‘white wedding’, setting the craze after Catherine, a style icon of the eighteenth century, wore white to her own wedding. e parkland setting was designed by Sir Humphrey Repton

1 4 FEBRUARY 2018

whose 200th anniversary of his death is being marked this year. Repton also designed two other landscapes in Epping Forest; Higham’s Park and e Warren. Epping Forest has always been an inspiration to artists. e sculptor Jacob Epstein lived on Baldwin’s Hill in Loughton and frequently painted scenes of the Forest, some of which became campaign posters for London Transport in the 1930s. Another artist famous for the posters that promoted an escape from the city to Epping Forest was Walter Spradbery. He lived in Buckhurst Hill at e Wilderness. e plaque laid there by him marking the threshold of his house can still be found deep amongst the trees. He and his wife often presented opera performances in his garden, which now forms part of the Forest. e Forest offers a huge range of fun activities; from golf and football, horse-riding, cycling and of course walking. But it’s a little known secret that you can even get married in Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge overlooking the magnificent Chingford Plain and Forest canopy. Epping Forest has grown since it was originally saved for the public by the City of London Corporation in 1878. It now includes ‘buffer lands’ to the north of the Forest; large areas of which are publicly accessible such as Gifford’s Wood and Warlies Park. Both locations offer magnificent views across the Lea Valley and are fantastic for bird watching. n

THE DETA I L S Further information on the history of Epping Forest and where to visit in the Forest can be found in a wide range of books and maps available at the visitor centres on Ranger’s Road, Chingford; at High Beach and in the Temple at Wanstead Park, or visit the website www.cityoflondon.gov.uk

INHERITANCE TAX: THE BASICS

T

here are few more confusing – or unpopular – taxes than Inheritance Tax (IHT). For older generations, the prospect of paying up to 40% tax on what they leave behind is difficult to contemplate. For some children and grandchildren, grappling with IHT is something they are ill-equipped to do.

FIvE IdEAS TO MAkE LIFE LESS TAxInG There is plenty that can be done to keep a potential IHT bill to a minimum. Here are a few ideas: 1. Use the allowance for individuals to give gifts worth up to £3,000 a year (£6,000 if you use the previous year’s allowance as well) without incurring any IHT. 2. Parents and grandparents of the bride/groom can gift £5,000 and £2,500 respectively. 3. Individuals can pass on larger amounts of money free of IHT, so long as they live for seven years after making the gift. don’t give away too much too soon – otherwise you

1 6 FEBRUARY 2018

could be dependent on your children 4. Take account of the ‘normal expenditure out of income’ rule – if you give gifts out of your income and, in doing so, don’t damage your standard of living, they are exempt from IHT, and there is no upper limit. 5. Giving to charity is tax free but leaving at least 10% of your net estate to charity can also bring the liability down to 36% instead of the usual 40%. With some careful planning and sensible advice, family wealth can be kept for future generations to enjoy. THOUGHTS ON

MILLENNIALS WORDS: MICHELLE B. HARRIS

T

here seems to be an acute interest in millennials; those born between 1980s and mid-1990s.

is generation is savvy with communications, social media and digital technology. ey are more confident than previous generations, in tune with the environment and strive towards a healthy work-life balance. But this generation of youngsters merit close analysis on two levels: a) Negatively – there is a growing trend of depression and addiction to technology. e younger millennials appear to be obsessed with social media and their mobiles. You see friends sitting together in silence as they text, WhatsApp, Snapchat, Instagram. ere is a large percentage of this group living their lives through social media. Most children used to seek approval from their parents or teachers but now it is their social peers. So what is the benchmark of authority? A group of friends, either real ones or acquaintances that you pick up along the way, in your quest for the development of a social circle? Hopefully social media will be refined as it’s increasingly getting out of control and even as I write – fake news is being addressed.

But on a positive note: b) is is the generation that will positively change and lead the world into a new direction. Millennials insist upon meaning and a positive societal contribution. ey are infinitely more accepting of diversity than previous generations and now, as they’re beginning to make their impact within corporate environments, they are purpose driven looking at importance, value and how they are personally and professionally aligned. ey have the confidence to question and are sceptical. Being so technologically savvy, they have no difficulty in researching facts through multiple sources and have the confidence to question and challenge authority. As millennials ascend the corporate ladders there will be a definite change. Old school rules will cease to apply and transparency will be the new norm. We have entered a fast-paced new world where technology and speed drive everything. We want next day deliveries (of practically everything) and international correspondence and files to be delivered in nanoseconds, at the touch of a SEND button or transfer. So what’s next?... We live in interesting times… n

This is the generation that will positively change and lead the world into a new direction.

OUT & ABOUT

CLASSIC AUCTION ACTION! Saturday, 3rd March sees 140 fine and fascinating classic cars and automobilia on sale by Historics at Ascot Racecourse

S

ome of us get our kicks from a spot of home DIY, others in manicuring the garden, but for some classic car buffs, nothing beats a nicely decayed piece of motoring history to get the adrenaline pumping. For well-established classic car auction specialists, Historics, it’s all part of the vibrant scene, and one that you can see for yourself at their major Spring sale at Ascot Racecourse on Saturday, 3rd March. Every one of Historics’ regular major sales includes hugely varying consignments to suit all tastes and pockets - from very affordable to significant investment collector cars – and amidst the 140 fine classic motor cars and automobilia on offer at Ascot, Historics will tempt the restorer fraternity with a small selection of cobwebbed classics, all offered at no reserve. Taking ‘resto’ pride of place is a forlorn example of what was once the cream of quintessentially British sports touring cars – a 1963 Alvis TD21 Coupé. Requiring rather more than spit and polish to restore it to its former glory, it is one of the last cars to be built over the car’s production span, but despite its spartan appearance, the Alvis comes with a considerable inventory of parts to enable the buyer to roll their sleeves up in the knowledge that there will be very few items left to purchase…just plenty of elbow grease. One unique aspect of this car adds more encouragement to its future owner, namely that at one point in its life the Hollywood legend Robert Mitchum sat behind the wheel as he motored serenely in the 1968 film, ‘The Big Sleep’. A DVD of the film is included with the car. Notwithstanding the fascination and draw of cars requiring restoration, stealing the limelight at Historics’ Ascot Racecourse auction is a gleaming array that can only be described as classic car heaven. Many cars on offer have come to sale after enjoying the most fastidious restoration and continuous care bestowed on them….such as a bright green (the colour of envy!) 1971 Porsche 911 2.4 S. Some £120,000 was spent to bring it to its impeccable condition. Air-cooled Porsches of this era are now hugely sought after amongst enthusiasts and collectors and this one is very much worthy of its estimate of £160,000-£190,000.

“Every one of Historics’ regular major sales includes hugely varying consignments to suit all tastes and pockets - from very affordable to significant investment collector cars”

And Historics is also offering at Ascot arguably the world’s finest example of a later 1995 Porsche 911/964 RS Lightweight. Just one of 40 examples manufactured for the UK market, this very special motorsport-inspired and super rare model has travelled less than 700 miles per year on average since new and is truly impeccable in every respect. Typically, Historics will offer some 40 different classic car marques and, bearing in mind the roots of the then thriving British car industry, many are home-grown. For example, there’s a nimble and hugely-desirable, wind-in-the-hair 1971 Lotus Elan S4 Sprint that’s had £30,000 spent on it (Est. £42,000-£49,000), and a brace of classic racy Triumphs, in factory blue racing colours, one a 1962 TR4 works recreation (£36,000-£42,000), the other a 1963 Spitfire GT restored to Le Mans specification (£25,000-£32,000), plus a very original example of an iconic British sports classic, a 1955 MGA Mk.1 Roadster offered at a very affordable £18,000-£22,000…and a ubiquitous Mini, this a cream-of-the-crop Surf Blue/Old English White 1965 Morris Mini Cooper ‘S’ in breathtaking condition, with just 36,000 miles since new (£39,000-£45,000). To suit those with quirkier tastes, how about a 1929 Ford Model A Coupé in striking hot-rod spec., with a rumbling 4.7 litre V8 ‘under the hood’, offered at an estimate of £19,000-£22,000.. or perhaps a gleaming, polished aluminium 1954 Airstream caravan, its stunning interior superbly created - authentically and sympathetically - by its interior designer vendor. (£46,000-£52,000) Too numerous and varied to mention in full, consignments at Historics’ major Ascot Racecourse auction on Saturday, 3rd March can only be fully appreciated in person and Historics make it easy by offering two preview days on Thursday 1st and Friday 2nd March preceding the sale. Entry is by catalogue, available in advance or on arrival. For full details of this fascinating classic car sale including all consignments, and information on bidding, visit www.historics.co.uk, call 01753 639170 or email auctions@historics.co.uk

TRAVEL

MEET HOLIDAY

DESIGNERS

– COMING TO YOU FOR 2018

WORDS CHRISTINE BAKER, CHRISTEN MEDIA

M

illions of UK holidaymakers will have coped with the post-festive season return to work by booking holidays, as travel companies try to cope with their busiest time of the year. “Sunshine Saturday” in January saw a huge spike in bookings for the UK’s biggest holiday companies, as tourists plot their escapes during the dreariest months of the year. DIY is the fastest growing trend for many who think they will save lots of money and still have the best time. Let’s introduce Dan Lion, Managing Director of Holiday Designers, established in 2011 with some reliable do’s and don’ts.

DIY Risks “Arranging your own holiday can definitely save you money, but like any DIY you have to invest your own valuable time researching and doing the work. You have to work your way through far too much information online, much of it inconsistent, and it becomes a minefield, confusing and totally frustrating. Plus, there are critical finer details like arranging visas, checking entry requirements and minimum passport validity. If everything is not just right, holidaymakers can be refused flight boarding or passage through immigration. Peace of mind is paramount.

Booking online Online booking sounds good with promising

bargains, but it’s not always user friendly and never easy to speak to a real person. Travel agents and destination specialists often have better deals. We receive more calls from clients who wanted to book online and tried to do it themselves but are so confused and overloaded they have forgotten what they saw, what they liked and why. We are working with one client who wants a holiday for two weeks for a family of four. For us it’s quite simple. We find out what’s important to the family covering all their likes, dislikes and what they need. ey are now really excited and coming back to book one of the three options we offered.

Bespoke holidays Our experience in this industry is second to none and we are justly proud of what we have achieved. Our team at Holiday Designers create relationships with our customers, suppliers and staff – together with first-class service. Attention to detail is our highest priority, so no matter what you need your package to include, we can provide it. We provide a full concierge service too. Being independent we are free to choose who we work with and offer a multitude of options from modest to ultra-luxurious, tame to wild and adventurous.

Protected Being part of e Travel Network Group (TTNG) means we have excellent deals negotiated for us as part of the group and the professional support of their organisation. All of our holidays are 100% financially protected under Air Travel Organisers Licence (ATOL) T7406 and as Travel Trust Association (TTA) members offer the added peace of mind of securing our clients funds in a trust account.” n

In 2018 we are reaching out to our local community to offer the best holiday & travel service available. Don’t believe us? Give us a try!

A-Z OF HEALTH AND BEAUTY TIPS AND TREATMENTS With Frances Furlong

F

ollowing last month’s article here is part two of Health and Beauty tips and treatments, to give you some inspiration and ideas on how to improve your health, look and feel your best and keep motivated.

N is for nose refinement, small imperfections can trouble people, surgery is not always the answer, I get amazing results with small amounts of dermal filler to straighten noses and muscle relaxing injections to lift the tip of the nose.

I is for imperfections to skin tone. Flushing, broken veins and sun damage can all be easily treated. Intense pulsed light, chemical peels and good medical grade skin creams can all help.

O is for orange peel effect, time to start thinking about battling the dreaded curse of cellulite and localised fat. I advise my clients to start by body brushing daily for 2 mins and applying an anti cellulite cream, try Nivea or L’Oréal. Once you have completed this for 3 weeks, you will notice the stubborn areas and you can consider mesotherapy injections to help reduce cellulite and localised fat and improve blood flow to these sluggish areas.

J is for Japanese silk extracts, combined with Hyaluronic acid my favourite moisturiser at the moment is Inspira Med youth preserve cream, to help rejuvenate and repair winter skin. K is for kickstart your eating habits. Eating well shows on the outside and sugar is very ageing for the skin! Keep It real, try to avoid processed foods. Spice It up, bland food is boring, experiment with new spices and flavours. Drink up, add more water to your daily intake, it keeps your skin plumper. Don’t reward running with sweets, don’t destroy your exercise by loading up on sugar fixes. Think before you eat, take time over eating, it takes your brain 20 minutes to recognise that you have eaten, eat slowly and chew your food, to avoid eating too much. Log your meals, keep a record of what your eating daily, helps you keep on track and makes you able to monitor bad food choices and how certain foods make you feel after consuming. L is for liquid face lift, the ultimate non surgical option, using either Sculptra, Radiesse or Hyaluronic acid. Enhancing the chin, jawline, cheeks, nose to mouth lines and temple hollows can enhance and define a face, for a youthful contoured look. M is for Mole check, don’t ignore moles or lesions on the body, there is no harm in getting your GP to check, but there is when they are left.

4 2 FEBRUARY 2018

also depletes many nutrients, including vitamin C, which helps protect and repair skin damage. R is for Razor bumps (pseudofolliculitis barbae), also known as shaving bumps, affects men with tightly curved (or curly) hairs. When the tip of hair grows back under the skin or into the hair follicle, it is known as ingrown hair. Use of an electric shaver will help, as it does not cut as close as blades do. Shaving every other day, rather than daily, will help as well. At night, apply a lotion containing glycolic acid to the affected areas. This exfoliates the surface skin cells and reduces the likelihood of new spots. Try Neostrata Ultra Smoothing Lotion. n

P is for plumper and hydrated skin, I am a big fan of skin boosters, unlike normal dermal fillers, they don’t actually create volume when injected. They work by injecting small amounts of Hyaluronic acid into the dermis of the skin, spread evenly spaced to enhance any area of the face or body to rejuvenate. Great for acne scars, fine lines and wrinkles, backs of the hands, necklines and chest lines. Q is for quit smoking, we all know about the health implications to our bodies, but here is what it does to our skin. Cigarette smoke contains carbon monoxide, which displaces the oxygen in your skin, and nicotine, which reduces blood flow, leaving skin dry and discoloured. Cigarette smoking

n a scale of 0-10, how healthy is your mouth? Do your gums bleed? Are you confident of eating what you want? Do you have strong, well restored teeth? Are you happy with your smile? ere are many concerns that go through peoples’ minds, but often they don’t take action to improve their dental health or appearance due to reasons such as fear, embarrassment, not knowing how the final result will look, and maybe financial. However, the longer you leave problems in the mouth, the more complex and expensive the treatment becomes. Why are teeth important? Healthy, strong teeth are important for function and appearance. If you have missing teeth, or if they have become loose, it can become difficult to eat properly and enjoy food. Many people in this situation have to constantly be careful when chewing, and avoid going out to restaurants with friends or family – this has a direct impact on their confidence and lifestyle. Having dental care can help change a person’s life in so many ways… Dental problems – link to systemic disease ere is a lot of scientific evidence to show that dental disease can have a detrimental effect on a person’s general health. Gum problems are linked to heart disease, for example. Inadequate

chewing in the mouth due to a lack of back teeth can lead to food being swallowed in larger pieces – this can lead to digestive problems. Why do something now? ere are more health-related problems in the mouth as people get older. Teeth get looser, there are more gaps in the mouth as teeth are lost, gums shrink away, teeth break down more, and there is food collection between teeth. Teeth also wear away and look darker and unsightly. I have also observed that women spend decades looking after others (e.g. children) and put themselves last. By the time they reach “mid-life crisis”, they feel ready to do something positive for themselves. Others are really scared of going to the dentist due to bad experience(s) in the past. So, the question is “Why now?” In life, people make decisions based on health, wealth or lifestyle. ink about this carefully. THE SUPER-SLEEK PONYT TAIL AIL Mirror shine and not a hair out of place - that was the brief at Carolina Herrera and Oscar de la Renta in New York York (the city that basically in nvented the term ‘polished glamour’), with Eudon Choi and Shrimps following suit in London. Louisa Day, y, T3 UK brand ambassador, reveals how to get the look: 1. Prepare hair with a heat protector spray, y, blow-dry, blo y, then straighten, focusing most attention on midlengths and ends. 2. Using a tail comb, create a sharp centre or side parting. Brush hair into a low ponytail at the nape of the neck, ensuring the crown is flat. Secure with a band. 3. Sometimes, the shade doesn’t obviously lend itseelf to cosmetics, as was the case with last year’s foliage-inspired Greenery (unless you’re really into lim me green lipstick...) but for 2018, we’re in luck, beccause Ultra Violet is a gorgeous deep purple that offfers endless options in the make-up department. “Complex and contemplatiivve, Ultra Violet sugggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead, and the discoveries beyond wh here we are now, w,” say the pros at Pantone. TAKE A LEAF OUT OF NATURE ATURE Mirror the elegance of the natural world and a its palette - the ‘natural’ trend is all about org ganic structures and tactile finishes. “W Waay back in 1984, Dr Edward Wilson termeed ‘biophilia’ as the ‘innate sense of belonging to o the natural world’. Now, w, 34 years on, this sen sense nse of belonging will be entering our homes, with h wallpapers, window blinds and other decor. T This trend is also about nurturing the planet and sustainabilityy,,” says Alex Whitecroft, head of design at I Want Want Wallpaper Wallpaper. “Some key looks will be liiving ving walls, plant/tree bark designs, vegetation and the creation of tech-free spaces, because this lookk is all about immersing oneself in nature. That meaans an abundance of greenery and vegetation, wheth her real or faux. It’s about promoting a sense of wellb being through our obsession with the natural worldd.” “People are asking more of their homes. Scandinavian-style simplicity is still strong, buut it will be joined by a desire for understated opuulence, with rich velvets, brass accents (replacing lastt year’s copper) and different stone finishes,” says Co ornelia de Ruiter Ruiter, CEO and co-founder of Homewin ngs. “Marble, velvet and mid-century pieces aree adding a touch of luxury and smaller accent pieces, p like pouffes and ottomans in rich shades, are helping to add colour to homes.”

Storage solutions

for a calm and stylish home With creative fittings and a few good habits, any space can be streamlined and sorted. The Remodelista experts reveal how. WORDS: SAM WYLIE-HARRIS

W

ho says storage can’t be stylish? And for a sense of calm and control, Julie Carlson and Margot Guralnick, the authors of Remodelista - a new book packed with ultra-slick organisational tricks to deploy all over the house also suggest embracing some ‘Daily Rituals’, little habits that often take no more than a few minutes but can have life-changing effects. For instance, studies suggest that people who make their bed every day are not only more rested than non-bed-makers, but happier, healthier and more successful. Opening your mail every day is another of their tips, to avoid that dreaded build-up

of unsorted life admin that can weigh heavily on the mind (and clog up drawers!). Along with handy storage tactics - such as ‘Hang It’, ‘Cart It’, ‘Label It’ and ‘Tray It’ - the book sets out to illustrate how, with clever lay-outs and fittings and adopting a few simple habits, being sorted and tidy can be aesthetically-pleasing and make a huge difference to our wellbeing, even when space is tight. So whether you need to know how to make the best of a compact kitchen, or want to edit your wardrobe ready for the new season, here are five ways to make an art out of order and live better through organisation, with the help of our designminded friends at Remodelista.com...

A Shaker-style entry A storage-lined open foyer is a great, versatile option for busy households. Taking inspiration from the Shaker use of peg rails to hang all manner of things, all you need to assemble your own version is a sliver of hall off your front or back door. Why it works: Pegs close to the entrance help ensure kids’ bags land in the right spot (parents’ bags on other end), designated coat pegs offer a place for each family member, a Shaker-style hanging shelf provides a home for small items, a chalkboard marks daily reminders, and an Ikea Tjusig Bench (fROM £35, Ikea.com) doubles as a shoe rack.

The ultimate compact kitchen A small workspace can still make good use of open and closed storage: Cookware and dishware are concealed behind cabinet doors, and a clever storage rail keeps often-used tools close at hand but off the counter. Why it works: Stacked dishware and decanted pantry goods maximise cabinet space, S hooks and metal clips hold kitchen scissors, coffee filters etc, trays anchor the counter, a small hanging basket holds utensils and a print adds an artful touch - a small detail that makes a big difference.

The instant cocktail party

clothing. Canvas bins, wire baskets, cardboard boxes and metal dividers - most from office and kitchen supply departments - make the shelf storage much more efficient. Why it works: Jumble-preventing bins and baskets create discreet storage zones on open shelves, piles of jeans, sweaters and T-shirts limited to six per stack, metal-rimmed paper key tags serve as labels on bins and baskets and allow for easy sorting, glass fronted drawers are a bespoke detail worth copying (they protect shoes while enabling you to see what you’ve got), and an industrial kitchen stool provides a place to put on shoes, drape clothes and reach high shelves.

An elegant all-in-one laundry cupboard This compact laundry has birch plywood shelves and drawers for all the essentials. There’s also room for general cleaning supplies, electronics and a foldup ironing board tucked into the side, which can be hidden behind closed doors. Why it works: Laundry detergent is decanted and stored in a stainless steel dispenser, a galvanized metal bucket holds household cleaning supplies in a portable kit, laundry essentials are sorted by function in a combination of shelves and drawers, and the hard-to-reach top shelf is put to good use as a home for Wi-Fi equipment.

Tips extracted from Remodelista: The Organized Home by Julie Carlson and Margot Guralnick, photography by Matthew Williams, published by Artisan Books, priced £15.99. Available now.

Let’s face it, you’re more likely to throw an impromptu drinks or dinner party when your tabletop elements are kept at the ready in one place. A kitchen or dining area drawer is especially handy for this kit. Pro tip: Store the items on trays so you can lift them out for quick delivery to the table - and then use trays for serving. Preparedness kit: Bar tools comprising corkscrew, bottle opener, jigger and mixing spoon; candles, tapers and tea lights, matches, ice bucket, glasses, serving trays, ready-for-the-table flatware in leather pockets, cloth napkins rolled into napkin rings.

A well-ordered wardrobe A fashionista’s dream - fitted with floor-to-ceiling storage, this space holds a wardrobe’s worth of UR AY R Y2 0210 81 8 5955 FEF BERBURA

Automatically, all furnishings, walls and even lighting become a
