An Exams Revolution I
Ben Horan is Senior Deputy Head (Academic) at Merchant Taylors' School. He writes on the challenges facing schools in the face of recent changes to A Level exams.
n their combined six years as Secretaries of State for Education, Michael Gove and Nicky Morgan launched a revolution in the education system of England that has had repercussions for millions of young people and their experience of the Sixth Form. One of the major thrusts of Gove’s reforms was the reversion to a system of ‘linear’ A Levels. From 2000, A Levels were examined in a ‘modular’ manner – with AS Levels being examined in the Lower Sixth year and A2 Levels in the Upper Sixth year – with each qualification contributing half of the overall marks for the A Level as a whole. Pupils could take exams in January and June of each year – often taking the same module multiple times. Fundamentally this modular system remained the same for 15 years. However, in January 2013, Gove announced that all A Levels would now be examined at the end of the Sixth Form and that AS Levels would now not count to the overall grade – a linear, not a modular system. This
linear system was nothing new – it was a return to the curriculum of the twentieth century and one that was welcomed by many who hankered after a return to less testing and more learning. However, a lack of proper consultation and a desire to see his reforms enacted led Gove to force them through in a staggered fashion, some subjects would start a linear programme in 2015, some in 2016 with the final tranche having to wait until 2017. The fact that the reforms have been enacted in this manner has led to a quandary for every senior school in England. Many pupils are doing a mixture of subjects. This means they will have some ‘linear’ and some ‘modular’ subjects – some will be examined in the Lower Sixth and others only in the Upper Sixth. All in all, it was a complicated and frustrating situation. Head Masters and Academic Deputies consulted parents, staff and pupils and made their plans accordingly. At Merchant Taylors’, we took the decision early to teach all of our subjects in a ‘linear’ fashion, irrespective of whether they were designed to be examined in such a fashion. A major advantage has been that by picking a course and sticking to it we are no longer buffeted by the winds of governmental caprice. It has allowed all of our subjects to be able to gain valuable teaching time – up to nine weeks across the year – and has allowed all of our boys to continue studying four A Levels. It has given all of our Heads of Department the ability to plan their curricula in the lower years to adequately prepare their charges for the rigours of the harder A Levels or Cambridge’s Pre-U courses some of our Departments are pursuing. Most of all though, this decision has given our boys time; time to study and enjoy their subjects without the constant pressure of external exams. It has meant that they can enrich their learning by wider reading rather than more revision. Teachers and pupils can now explore that which interests them and not obsess about whether it is on the syllabus. It has helped us break the mindset that something is only worth studying if you are definitely going to be examined on it, a feature of our education system in recent years. Boys at Taylors’ are more excited about their learning than ever and are engaging with it in a more mature and sophisticated manner. It is an exciting time for us all. Mr Gove’s rushed and hasty decision led to a minefield in terms of planning and logistics, but our decision means that we are through it and enjoying rediscovering a love of learning for learning’s sake. For that, he probably deserves a, grudging, thank you. Royal
APPOINTMENT Queen’s visit a highlight of Berkhamsted School’s 475th year
T
his year’s 475th anniversary of Berkhamsted School’s foundation is an important milestone but it became an occasion of great significance, even in the long history of the School, when the celebrations included a visit by the School’s Patron, Her Majesty The Queen. Berkhamsted School, and the wider community, welcomed Her Majesty’s visit to Berkhamsted on Friday 6 May; a bright and sunny day that saw the Royal guest, the first reigning monarch to visit the School, arrive resplendent in fuchsia and white. The visit was a highlight of a busy and celebratory year that also saw the School mark the centenary of rugby at Berkhamsted with a reunion of our most successful teams of the past and another highly successful season for many of the 22 senior teams at the school. A revised history of the School was published, to much acclaim. The Combined Cadet Force, one of the most established in the country, was privileged to record an inspection of a 60-strong guard of honour by The Queen in its 125th anniversary year. To top it all, in Girls’ Sport five National titles in Lacrosse and Netball were added to the three from last year Richard Backhouse joined the School as Principal in January 2016 and, in addition to hosting The Queen’s visit to the School, has dedicated time during his first two terms to “understand what might help Berkhamsted to become even more fully itself, or find new ways of being itself – ways which are relevant and well-matched to new challenges and changes in
14 SEPTEMBER 2016
society, in learning and in the world of work.” Looking ahead to the first full academic year leading this family of schools, Mr Backhouse is seeking to help pupils of the school to develop a sense of identity, of value and of purpose. His advice to parents researching next steps in their child’s education is to ask first “Will this school give my child confidence?” and then “What will this school train them to base that confidence on? Will it equip them to learn, and to lead; to be independent, and to be interdependent; to be clever and to be wise; to be generous, and to have good boundaries?”. With the opening of an impressive new pavilion and changing rooms at Chesham Road Playing Fields, expanding the use of the recently-installed high ropes facility and launching a new Gruffalo Trail at the School’s Haresfoot site, life at Berkhamsted promises to continue to offer the broadest possible educational experience for all pupils. “Even in a year in which there has been celebration of the School’s history there have been many developments of resource and practice, as one would expect in a forward and outward looking school,” concludes Mr Backhouse. St Helen's:
Transforming Learning At St Helen’s we are continually striving to improve every aspect of the educational experience which we offer; transforming the School in a way which transforms the learning of every student and equips her for the challenges of higher education and the world of work.
W
e have already transformed learning in our pre-preparatory department by building new covered outdoor learning areas to encourage curiosity and to promote independent thinking, and a new playground to improve the girls’ confidence and encourage a robust and adventurous attitude towards challenges. Our Junior School (Years 3-6) has undergone a complete transformation, and our brand new building opened its doors at the start of the Autumn Term, enabling our students to enjoy exceptional learning in the large and light classrooms and exciting ‘break-out zones’, and to learn about the natural world on vibrant 'living roofs'. There is extensive provision for specialist teaching in Music, Art, D&T, Science and Drama, and the resources to stage productions and concerts. We have also transformed the oldest part of St Helen’s Senior School, School House, into a welcoming reception area and a suite of seminar rooms designed for twenty-first century methods of learning. The Sixth Form can look forward to occupying transformed facilities by September 2017 in buildings which formerly housed the Junior School. Buildings and improvements to facilities are important because they provide the space within which every girl can pursue her dreams and achieve her potential. More important are committed teaching staff 18 SEPTEMBER 2016
who are passionate about their subjects and their profession, and who care deeply about the well-being of children and young adults. We have designed new and challenging English and Mathematics curricula in Little Saints and Junior School, enabled our Sixth Form students to enjoy to the full the opportunities provided by the new A Levels, and launched an exciting programme of academic extension including a successful initiative to encourage the girls to apply to the most competitive universities in the UK and beyond. Our new Director of Futures is developing a programme to develop our provision of first-class careers and HE advice and networks, preparing our students to meet the challenges they will face. We treasure the principles which make St Helen's an exceptional school: teaching and learning of the highest quality, pastoral care which focuses on the needs of each individual girl, and an extensive and expanding range of co-curricular opportunities in music, sport, drama, community service and self-discovery. St Helen's girls are participating in regional and national competitions – and winning them – and developing their leadership and teamworking skills alongside their musical, dramatic and artistic talents. We continue to work in partnership with Merchant Taylors' School to provide opportunities for St Helen's students to work regularly alongside boys in major concerts and dramatic productions, as well as in a range of challenging and adventurous activities such as Phab and the CCF. We aim to provide every student with the opportunity to participate in activities which will transform her life and understanding of other people, cultures and major world issues. The world of education is constantly evolving, and St Helen’s is transforming to equip our girls with the skills, knowledge and understanding which will enable them to excel in a rapidly-changing world. WEDDING GUIDE
Exquisite elegance in the making
B
We speak to Lesley Cutler, designer and creator of made to measure wedding dresses, evening and occasion wear.
ased in her studio in Milton Keynes, Lesley has a history steeped in design and creation of beautiful, high end bespoke wedding and occasion wear at some of the top design houses. “I studied for 4 years at The London College of Fashion, before working for Norman Hartnell in the couture workroom (designer and creator of the Queens wedding dress). Moving to Windsmoor in London I became an Assistant Pattern Cutter, gaining valuable tailoring expertise.” As a promotion Lesley moved to Aquascutum as Pattern Cutter. “During my time here I worked on Margaret Thatcher’s - the then current Prime Minister ” wardrobe. Lesley gained experience in various design houses, including Ronald Joyce – the largest award winning bridal-wear manufacturer at the time, Jenny Packham and Elizabeth Emanuel where Lesley ran the workroom and fitted the clients. Her creations have been worn by Royalty, famous singers, public figures and TV personalities. Since starting her own business in 1994, Lesley tells us that things have changed dramatically. “Initially a bespoke wedding dress service, and now it has evolved to include Mothers of both Bride and Groom” says Lesley. “Currently the trend is for the ‘mothers’ to blend and co-ordinate with the bridal party so there’s a cohesive colour palette or theme. Mothers often like me to supply the matching accessories too, which can be the bag, jewellery and head-piece

– a real one stop shop for them making it so simple and yet exactly what they are looking for”. Lesley works with clients of all ages – and prides herself on ensuring that everything is age appropriate, exactly what they are looking for. “The current colour trend for mature brides is buttermilk with ivory lace overlaid. This is very striking and photogenic” says Lesley. Recently Lesley designed a trouser bridal outfit for a wedding overseas –“voluminous palazzo pants made from a very heavy fluid silk crepe – they hung like a skirt and were massively flared at the bottom” Lesley is starting to see more requests for ‘up-cycling’. One client had their daughter christened in St Pauls Cathedral. “It was really important to them that the Christening gown came from her wedding dress whilst keeping the original dress intact”. Lesley explains that Brides are starting to request that their dress is made from the fabric of their Mothers pre-loved gown. “Such lovely sentiment and an honour to be working with a beloved piece to create yet another stunning, current gown”. As well as traditional bridal wear, Lesley creates bespoke evening gowns. These have been worn at dance competitions and glittering charity balls. “I use the same designer silk fabrics as I used when I worked with Elizabeth Emmanuel. The exquisite fabric creates the dream, made to measure, couture experience” . A Sparkling MAKEOVER Abbey Fine Jewellery Grand Opening
O
n the evening of Thursday 8th September a reception was held at Abbey Fine Jewellery in Berkhamsted to celebrate the store’s new ownership and recently completed refurbishment. Customers and friends gathered to enjoy Champagne and canapés and peruse some of the exquisite jewellery on show. The Berkhamsted jewellers was acquired in January by long established Cotswold retail group, Miles Mann Ltd. which has other branches in Cheltenham, Gloucester, Bourton on the Water and Bath. An extensive redesign of the shop’s display windows and an internal makeover was completed in March and now that staff at the business have had time to settle into their new roles, it was felt that the time was right to celebrate the venture properly. Deputy Mayor of Berkhamsted, Councillor Mrs Carol Green was invited to cut the ribbon and Berkhamsted Life was on hand to photograph the event and a few of the dazzling jewels. Abbey Fine Jewellery offers an eclectic range of vintage and modern diamond and gemstone jewellery as well as a comprehensive selection of silver and giftware. ‘One of our first objectives for this branch was to move the stock in an upmarket direction’ explained new owner Miles Mann. ‘We

felt that Berkhamsted was an ideal outlet for high quality jewellery and we are continuing to add to the range of high end pieces we stock. Having said that, we are very aware that many existing customers have used the store as their go to jeweller for smaller gift purchases, silver jewellery and repairs so we have also focused on increasing selection and value for money in these areas.’

The business also specialises in bespoke jewellery design and remodelling. Customers are guided through the design process and the unique creations are manufactured by the company’s in house goldsmiths at its Cotswold head office. ‘Having our own highly skilled craftsmen to handle our bespoke designs and repair service is a major selling point for us’, said Miles. ‘People like to feel as close to the process as possible and it can be hard to achieve that when other parties are involved in design and manufacture.’ The opening event was enjoyed by all and with the champagne flowing there may also have been the occasional ring of the cash register just audible beneath the sound of chatter and popping corks. Taking the next big step in your
RELATIONSHIP? If you’re planning to get married, enter into a civil partnership, buy a house with your partner or move into your partner’s home, it’s easy to get caught up in all the excitement. Whilst not wanting to affect the romance, Sue Andrews, partner, B P Collins urges couples to think carefully about the legal implications of such steps and explains why.
T
here is a common misconception that if someone moves into their partner’s home and contributes to the mortgage and the household bills, that automatically confers an interest in the property. But it does not, and if there is nothing in writing then you could be left trying to establish a joint intention that was due to happen. Another misconception is if you live with someone for a period of time, you have the same rights and obligations as someone who is married. This is not so. If you are planning to move in together, think about having an agreement, setting out each of your rights and responsibilities in relation to the property. If you are planning to buy a house with a partner, then you should consider how that property is owned. For instance, if you are contributing more in terms of the deposit or mortgage repayments, are you entitled to a greater
share? You need to ensure that the documentation reflects the interest you will have, because if not, you may find the property is owned by you and your partner in equal shares. If parents are providing monies to help with a house purchase then unless those funds are a gift to both parties, consideration needs to be given as to how the property will be owned. This applies whether you are married, in a civil partnership or living together. For those planning to marry or enter a civil partnership, you might want to think about a pre-nuptial agreement. People often think that seeking this or similar financial agreements imply a lack of trust. But a pre-nup should spark a discussion about what you both want to achieve and what is a fair way of dealing with matters in the event of separation. It’s important to note the word “agreement”, since it’s not about one party imposing terms on another. Having an honest and frank discussion at the outset is a great basis for a marriage or long term relationship, with respect between both parties being a key ingredient. Autumn
TREATS Autumn months at Waddesdon Manor see the landscape transformed into a kaleidoscope of golden and red hues.
T
he autumn leaves, ablaze with colour, make for a magnificent setting to explore the gardens and for children to let off steam in the woodland playground. After a leisurely stroll, treat yourself to a slice of cake at the Stables café. There are several opportunities to explore the grounds in new and different ways this autumn, including a special day looking at the Victorian feature, Pulham rock (Wednesday 21 September). Waddesdon’s rock gardens and grottoes are fantastic examples of this artificial material created by James Pulham and Co. The event combines talks from experts, including Claude Hitching (author of ‘Rock Landscapes: The Pulham Legacy’) and a walking tour of Waddesdon’s rock gardens. There will also be the chance to learn about, forage and cook seasonal wild foods on the estate at a special event, ‘A taste of the wild’ (Sunday 9 October). Inspired by autumn harvests, this day of expert instruction is combined with a picnic lunch and two course dinner, with all the meals centred upon wild ingredients. A similar ‘Bushcraft Day’ will provide the opportunity for children to learn survival skills and cook wild foods (Wednesday 26 October). With the house closing on 23 October, in time for Christmas preparation, there are only a few weeks remaining to see the beautiful displays and exhibitions. For this year only, a reproduction of a 17th-century Savonnerie carpet allows visitors to walk into the Red Drawing room for the first time since 1958 and see the artwork up close. Also

coming to a close is a display of French Royal Furniture by Jean-Henri Riesener in the White Drawing room. The exhibition allows for an unusual viewing of three of Riesener’s exceptional chests, including 360° views and 3D deconstructions. Kate Malone’s stunning ceramic pieces inspired by all aspects of Waddesdon can be seen in the Coach House Gallery until 16 October. October half term will see a hive of activity, with the grounds open every day (Saturday 22 to Sunday 30 October). ‘The Veronica Scanner: Live 3D Portraiture’ will be in the Coach House Gallery, allowing participants to have their faces scanned and printed into threedimensional busts. The scanner’s eight cameras capture 96 highresolution photographs within 4 seconds, mapping the intricate detail of a human head from every angle. Horrible Halloween week, also running during half term, will include an Ugly Bug trail with special late night openings on Friday 28 and Saturday 29 October, pumpkin carving and spooky art and craft activities. The week concludes with the beloved storybook character Winnie the Witch’s Halloween Party packed full with horrible Halloween games. Parental Alienation
WHAT IS IT?
Have you ever heard of a father or a mother who has not had contact with their child or contact was very limited? Did the parent, with whom the child lives, influence the child against the other parent damaging what otherwise could be a loving bond between them?
P
arental Alienation is when the resident parent (whom the child lives with) knowingly or unknowingly influences the child’s wishes and feelings against the other parent or family members, such as grandparents. As a result of this, the child becomes ‘alienated’ from the other parent or grandparent with whom they have no or very little contact. An example of this is when the child is led to believe that the other parent is the cause of all their problems and he or she is to be avoided. Parental behaviour such as this often occurs following a family separation or divorce. Parental Alienation is already widely recognised in other jurisdictions including the USA and it is now a criminal offence in Brazil. In the UK it is commonly described as ‘implacable hostility’. It is certainly not in the child’s best interest as it can be
42 SEPTEMBER 2016
damaging to a healthy family life with both parents. But what is in the child’s best interest and what can the parent do who is at the receiving end of his or her child’s hostility which is caused by the other parent? Mediation is highly encouraged as it helps parents to come to an agreement between themselves with the help of an independent third party. However, if parents have to use court proceedings, which are sometimes inevitable, the courts take into consideration what is in the child’s best interest. It is assumed that a child should have meaningful contact with both parents, unless there is a risk the child may suffer harm if they have contact with the non-resident parent. Parenting does not come with guide books and neither do children. Family life when parents are separated comes with unexpected ups and downs. Seeking help and advice at the earliest opportunity is essential. The longer the non-resident parent leaves the issue, the harder it could be to re-establish contact especially if the child is at a young age. Literary
DELIGHTS
Amidst the busy life of unpacking and shelving books, seeing publishers in the bookshop and - most importantly for us - talking to our readers, our booksellers pull together each autumn to bring you the Chorleywood Literary Festival
O
ver five days in October we will be championing the written word and bringing you the newest books and most diverting personalities of literary life; from historians to novelists, Reverends to poets, and bakers to politicians. It all begins on Wednesday 12th October with the inimitable Simon Bradley and his masterly book The Railways. Heir to Betjeman in his championing of British railway travel, Bradley is the perfect guide to its architecture, engineering and culture from the initial Metropolitan Railway through Metroland into the present day. Who better to continue this literary feast than The Reverend Richard Coles who, on Friday 14th will be joining us to talk about parish life at parsonage and pulpit. Following on from his charming Fathomless Riches, the second volume of his memoirs Bringing in the Sheaves takes us through his ten years as a minister and presenter with the same disarming wit and wisdom listeners to Radio 4 will know from Saturday Live and Pause For Thought. We then have a full and varied schedule for the Saturday of the festival, beginning at noon with two brilliant local poets Caroline Smith and Neil Elder. Continuing to celebrate local authors they are followed by DJ Kelly, with stories ranging from heretic hunters to agents provocateurs all bound up in the history of espionage in Buckinghamshire. Closing the Saturday programme is the wonderful and idiosyncratic cyclist and travel writer Tim Moore, who delighted readers with previous books Gironimo! and You Are Awful (But I Like You). His new book, The Cyclist Who Went Out in the Cold, takes us along for Moore’s 9,000 kilometre journey through the Iron Curtain on a two-gear East German shopping bike. I hope that you, dear reader, have been able to keep up with
44 SEPTEMBER 2016
me thus far and that the delights on offer have not led you to cast off your copy of this periodical before your diary heads into further disarray. And if that is not too much to hope, then do make time to join us on Sunday for our last day of the festival, starting with wonderful baked goods and recipe secrets from Paul Barker of Cinnamon Square at midday. Following on at the Chorleywood Memorial Hall is James MacManus. Having been at the heart of literary London for 50 years, editing and directing the Times Literary Supplement. His latest novel, Midnight in Berlin, is a fascinating fictionalisation of a scuppered British plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler on his 50th Birthday, that would have been “as easy as winking”. After MacManus is historian Sian Evans with her new history of British High Society between the wars, Queen Bees. Told through the lives of six extraordinary women, including Lady Astor and Lady Cunard, Evans weaves an irresistible story of royalty and celebrity whose influence is still felt today. We close the festival with prize-winning memoirist and long-serving MP Alan Johnson. Like the previous volumes of his memoirs, his latest, The Long and Winding Road, is told with integrity, humility and humour telling of his 19 years in politics fighting for his constituents amidst the byzantine complexities of Parliamentary procedure. So do please join us for our 11th year of celebrating the written word at the Chorleywood Literary Festival.
THE DETAILS As ever, all of our tickets and book vouchers are available from our bookshops in Chorleywood & Gerrards Cross, online at chilternbookshops.co.uk or over the telephone 01923 283566

Worried about care costs draining your family’s
INHERITANCE?
As various changes to the Inheritance Tax rules continue to come into effect, we seem to be becoming less concerned about Inheritance Tax eating into the inheritance we leave to our children and more concerned about care costs
T
here have been consultations in recent years that have looked into either increasing the amount of our own money that we can keep (and not have to spend on care), or creating a cap for the amount of our money that we have to spend on care costs before the state steps in. For a variety of reasons, including the rising cost of care and pressures on central and local government budgets, none of these shows any immediate prospect of being implemented. We are therefore left with the current system: if you are not eligible for NHS Continuing Care (i.e. your care is paid for by central government through the NHS, regardless of your financial means, due to your needs being “health” related rather than “care” related – the assessment is a complicated and unpredictable one) then you will be self-funding in relation to your care until such time as your capital means drop below £23,500 – at which point your local authority will pick up the tab. As life expectancy has continued to increase, many more of us are now living for long enough to begin to deteriorate in our mental capacity (through conditions such as dementia and Alzheimer’s) to the extent where we require professional care in a care home rather than in our own home. That care comes at a considerable price and in many cases will continue for many years, slowly but surely reducing the inheritance that we might otherwise have wished to leave for our children. Naturally, it is important that we receive the very best care when we are in a position of needing that care and the wish to provide for our children must be balanced against ensuring our comfort in our old age. Nevertheless, many of us will want to make a priority of protecting an inheritance for our children, even at the expense of being able to fund our own care. Needless to say, local authorities are wise to many of the strategies that have previously been used to try to protect assets from being swallowed up in care costs. If you were to give an asset (such as a savings account, investment or property) to your children and then claim poverty when the local authority seek to assess your financial means, they will –
46 SEPTEMBER 2016
quite rightly – assume you have deliberately deprived yourself of that capital in order to avoid paying for care and will therefore set such transactions aside and continue to require you to fund your own care. The alternatives are, perhaps inevitably, quite complicated. A trust can be set up that will allow you limited use of your wealth during your lifetime but otherwise ring fence that wealth from being taken into account by the local authority when assessing your financial means. There are Inheritance Tax implications for the setting up of such trusts, as well as considerable legal costs and the loss of outright control of your assets (including possibly the roof over your head), however this might be a price worth paying in order to potentially protect several hundreds of thousands of pounds of assets from being spent on your care instead of being passed to your children. For example, if you are married and want to protect your home for the very specific scenario of you passing away and then your spouse needing to move into a care home, some straightforward options are available to avoid the entire value of your property being dissipated on care fees. It is possible to draft wills that protect the right for the surviving spouse to continue to occupy the family home, but ring fence the half of the property belonging to the first of you to die, so that this is preserved as an inheritance for your children and does not need to be spent on care fees by the surviving spouse. This is a fast-changing area of law and it is difficult (if not impossible) to predict how the rules and practice in relation to care costs will change in the coming years. Having said that, we can assist you with organising your affairs now in such a way as to give you the best chance possible, under the current rules, of protecting your assets. Please contact us today to discuss Asset Protection Trusts and Will Trusts, so that we can assist you. Get sporty this summer with hospice’s refurbished bikes scheme
S
outh Bucks Hospice is urging cyclists to snap up cheap bikes to help patients with life-limiting illnesses. The team at the High Heavens and Aston Clinton ReUse shops are refurbishing pre-loved bikes of all styles and sizes to inspire our community to get active over the school holidays. The charity, currently building a multi-million pound Community Hospice in Totteridge, High Wycombe, works in partnership with FCC Environment and Buckinghamshire County Council to ensure fewer items are sent to landfill. The bikes are repaired at HM Young Offenders’ Institute in Aylesbury, where about ten prisoners work five days a week to fix them and prepare them for resale. The renovated bikes go on to be sold to keen cyclists, children learning to ride or anyone looking for a fun way to keep fit. Peter Nicholls, the hospice’s Area Re-use Manager, said: “The refurbished bikes we sell are a great quality product

at a cheaper price, with all the money raised going towards improving the Hospice and our services. Cycling is also a great way to exercise with the children over the summer holidays. Come and find a bike just for you and get pedalling.” Jo Woolf, CEO of the Hospice, said: “I am so impressed with the commitment given by everyone involved in this project. I am heartened to see how this scheme not only benefits our patients but also helps the young prisoners who work so hard on this project.” You can find refurbished bikes perfect for you and your family at the High Heavens and Aston Clinton ReUse sites or contact the South Bucks Hospice Fundraising team on 01494 464045 to find out more. he action takes place at Kop Hill in Princes Risborough, and all the fun, thrills and hard work contribute to raise funds for local charities and good causes on behalf of Heart of Bucks, the Buckinghamshire Community Foundation. Last year was a record breaker, with £78,000 being raised over the weekend, and an amazing 16,500 visitors. The event returns with a celebration of the 60’s so why not enter into the spirit and dress up to reflect that decade. You can see over 400 historic cars and motorcycles each day taking on the famous hill, with many more on display in the Paddock. Vehicles range in age from the early 1900’s to modern day exotics, so there will be something for everyone. This is not just a static display, but also a recreation of Kop Hill’s glorious past. Both days will have morning and afternoon sessions where you can see the cars and motorcycles storming the hill. Moving history right before your eyes, especially from one of the Grandstands, which gives a unique vantage point. Each session will be flagged off by a very special person, so do try to be at the start line – you won’t want to miss it. There will be some surprises during the lunch time break when you can experience a celebration of the 60’s mods and rockers culture, and the children from Princes Risborough School trying leg power as they race up Kop Hill. The children’s area will be packed with things to see and do. A vintage steam fair, with helter-skelter and dodgems, Punch and Judy show and circus skills workshop along with the Racing Bug track racing game will give young and not so young plenty to experience. Back by popular demand is the Wall of Death – you’ve seen it on the BBC – now experience it in real life. The Soapbox Challenge is a nail-biting competition, with teams of budding racers aged 10 to 17 trying to go the greatest distance down the purpose built ramp, chicane and obstacles to try and win the Beaumont Cup. It will take place

With so many things to see and do a break for some food and drink will definitely be in order. So relax in the food court while taking in the sounds of the purpose-built stage with a fantastic line up this year, including Halton Military Wives Choir, Rockin Rebels, The Loops and G-Elvis. A
utumn is the time when the fruit bushes and trees are laden with this year’s harvest. I was delighted to receive a glut of quince gathered from the garden of a most generous client who dines at the restaurant and lives in Old Amersham. The quince is an unusual crop, it is a hard fruit, a cross between an apple and a pear and has a wonderful , fragrant aroma. The flesh goes pink when it is cooked and for this sumptuous preserve the colour will deepen to dark, amber pink. This jelly is classically served with Manchego cheese in Spain but also a wonderful accompaniment to any stylish cheese board.

Grease the parchment paper with a thin coating of butter. Pour the cooked quince into the parchment paper-lined baking pan. 7. To serve, cut into squares or wedges and present with Manchego cheese or to accompany your cheese board with handmade crackers , walnut and sultana bread 8. Store by wrapping in foil or plastic wrap, and keeping in the refrigerator. 9. If you can be patient allow the cheese to mature for 4-6 weeks before using. Eat within 12 months.

Observing a parental bond offers so much and the family connections are clearly there for the skilled photographer to demonstrate with amazing images, It’s one of my favorite things.” “I am commissioned to cover assignments all over Europe and recently I shot in Dubrovnik and Toulouse but coming to my home town of Beaconsfield still provides so many wonderful opportunities.” “I am so happy to be a local partner in Buckinghamshire offering my photography services to families in the area. I offer vouchers to local charities they auction them, raising money for regional good causes whilst providing such great introductions. It is a balanced arrangement as I am happy to meet these great people, they love the images and it contributes to neighborhood good causes.” “Local families have commissioned me to photograph their children on their first day of school, milestone birthday 56 SEPTEMBER 2016

Humans
IN ANCIENT BRITAIN Travel back one million years to life in ancient Britain in a new exhibition at the Natural History Museum at Tring
E
xplore Britain’s mysterious past, the evolution of humans and the transformation of our landscape and climate over 900,000 years in Humans in Ancient Britain, until 6 November. Inspired by 12 years of research led by the Museum’s scientists, this exhibition will tell the fascinating story of how we have come and gone from this land over the ages and uncovers the changing faces and spaces of prehistoric Britain. See some of the incredible creatures that lived alongside our ancestors, including the remains of a rhino, the tooth of a sabre-tooth cat, and the leg bone of a woolly mammoth. Get your hands on replicas of tools used by the earliest humans in Britain to hunt for food and come face-to-face with the skull of the earliest-known Neanderthal in Britain. Professor Chris Stringer, palaeontologist and worldleading human origins researcher at the Natural History Museum comments: ‘You will be surprised by the history hidden beneath your feet. The story behind the humans who inhabited ancient Britain has taken us more than a decade to piece together. This gives us an exciting glimpse into our past, which also leads us to reflect on our future’. This journey through time reveals incredible details of the behaviour and the way of life of our ancient relatives and leaves you pondering your own place in this tale of human life in Britain.

5 Great reasons why you should become a member at Stoke Park… 1. Price! Despite being an Exclusive Members Club, there is real value to be had in the different memberships we offer. For example, our 7 Day Golf Membership is available for new members at just £3,500 per annum. This gives members access to our 27 Hole Championship Golf Course and extensive practice facilities. Likewise, with over 50 studio classes to choose from, unlimited use of our state-of-the-art gym and indoor swimming pool, for only £148 per month, our ever popular Health Membership represents excellent value as well. This is before you receive various discounts throughout the club on food, beverages and spa treatments by using the levy system we have in place.
Park is the UK’s very first Country Club and encircling the club’s beautiful 300 acre Buckinghamshire estate is the famous 27 Hole Championship golf course, undisputedly one of the finest parkland courses in the country. Created by eminent golf architect Harry Colt, the Stoke Park course has been the inspiration for many of the world’s most famous holes, including Augusta’s infamous 16th. The course itself has seen many impressive rounds in its prestigious history, including the first PGA Matchplay tournament in 1910 and James Bond’s epic golfing duel in the 1964 classic 007 movie ‘Goldfinger’.
4. A Hub of Social Activity
As a 5 AA Red Star venue, the bar is always set very high with the facilities that we offer to our members, and as such we need to constantly invest in them so that our members’ expectations are always exceeded. With more exciting projects also underway, there is no better time to become a member at Stoke Park.
One thing we say to any prospective member at Stoke Park is that membership with us is a lifestyle choice. It is far more than just a Gym or a Golf Membership. Being a member with us gives you the opportunity to attend over 50 wonderful social events throughout the year including our Summer Ball, Christmas Parties and The Boodles Tennis that features several of the Top 20 Male Tennis players in the world. For Golf members, there are regular competitions, medals and weekly roll-ups that you are encouraged to participate in, all part of the passion we have for making sure that members become well entrenched in Club life. You can also entertain family, friends or top clients in one of our three excellent restaurants - San Marco’s, The Orangery and Humphry’s – our three AA rosette fine dining restaurant.

PUCKER UP for spring’s
BEST LIPPIES Finding the perfect foundation or eyeliner or brow pencil can take years, so no wonder we stick with our favourites through thick and thin (and feel bereft if, heaven forbid, they’re discontinued) - but lipstick is another matter.
P
ainting on a new pout is the quickest and easiest way to refresh your make-up look, and the spring collections are so full of gorgeous glosses, lacquers and lipsticks, it’s impossible to choose just one. So pucker up and prep for the season’s most covetable lip products...
More subtle than the dense Rouge Coco, Chanel’s Rouge Coco Shine comes in three fierce brights and can be worn as a light gloss or layered for a more vibrant feel. THE BRIGHT SPARK More subtle than the dense Rouge Coco, Chanel’s Rouge Coco Shine comes in three fierce brights and can be worn as a light gloss or layered for a more vibrant feel. We love the tomato red Shipshape. THE PIGMENTED PAIR From RMK’s new Colour Performance collection comes the uber-pigmented Irresistible Bright Lips . This bluetoned pink is a great match for cooler skin tones, while Bright Coral suits warmer complexions. THE MIDWAY MARVEL Falling halfway between gloss and matte, Sleek’s VIP Lipsticks give creamy, full coverage with just a hint of shimmer. If it’s soft sugary shades you’re after, try the toffee-ish Private Booth or pastel pink Reserved.
THE WELCOME MATTE Matte lip colour usually comes in a bullet, as a thick, chalky lipstick, but Bourjois Souffle de Velvet is liquid, imparting a matte look with a light application in eight shades. Plum Pidou is a vivid berry pink - layer it up for an opaque effect. THE FULL MONTY The latest addition to the Burberry Beauty family is Full Kisses, the brand’s most intense lip colour yet. The 14 shades, from pale nudes to the rich purple of Dewberry, are housed in a twist-up pen, the bullet cleverly shaped so you won’t need liner or a lip brush.
STEAL OF THE WEEK
If you’re going to be stocking up on spring beauty essentials this month, it pays to do so at Sally Express. Throughout April, spend £40 or more, in store or online, and you’ll get a free beauty bundle worth £70. Head to www.sallyexpress.com to start shopping or find your nearest store.
THE RAVISHING RED If you’re a proponent of the ‘casual red lip’ trend (wearing scarlet by day), be sure to add Elizabeth Arden’s Cherry Bomb to your arsenal. One of four new shades in the Ceramide Ultra range, this blue-toned red delivers incredibly pigmented, impactful colour.
92 SEPTEMBER 2016
THE VINYL SPECIALIST Combining the staying-power of a stain with the juiciness of a gloss, Tom Ford’s innovative Patent Finish Lip Colour, in eight intense shades, oozes out of the clickable pen and slicks on like a dream. Try Red Corset for a vinyl-like blackberry pout that won’t budge.
THE CARING COLOUR Blended with five oils, including avocado, jojoba and cocoa seed, Bobbi Brown’s Nourishing Lip Colour really looks after your lips, while also giving great colour pay-off and lustrous shine in 15 shades.
THE VOLUPTUOUS VIXEN Yves Saint Laurent introduces 12 new shades to the ever-popular Rouge Volupte Shine lipstick line-up for spring. Rive Gauche is a luscious raspberry pink infused with oils, which imparts sheer coverage and moisturising benefits, too. THE ULTIMATE TEMPTATION Formulated with a trio of oils, Lipstick Queen’s Eden is as juicy and tempting as the forbidden fruit itself. A zingy apple red with a dash of dazzling shimmer, this suits-everyone shade is sinfully seductive.

T
his month I thought I would interview our new member of the Rosebank Dental Practice team who is an award-winning dentist and an expert in facial aesthetics. So just a little introduction about Dr Julia Bernardo… Dr Julia Bernardo qualified with Honours in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Surrey and in Dentistry at Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry. She has been awarded a Diplomate of Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgeons with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and was awarded distinction by the University of Kent on her MSc thesis on the use of Botulinum toxin for medical conditions in the head and neck. Dr Bernardo has continuously upgraded her skills and techniques with postgraduate courses, national and international conferences, and workshops in dentistry and facial aesthetics. She has built a reputation for excellence in providing high-quality patient care and for her expertise in facial aesthetics. After graduating, she has worked in the oral and maxillofacial department at the Royal Surrey County Hospital and as the premier dentist in Surrey. In 2015, she became a lead trainer of KT Medical Aesthetics Academy at Harley Street, London where she trains medical and dental professionals on the artistry of non-surgical medical aesthetics. Here she explains how dentistry and facial aesthetic treatments complement one another. HOW DID YOU BECOME INTERESTED INTERESTED IN FACIAL AESTHETICS? “Working alongside restorative consultants and plastic surgeons, I became incredibly inspired by the ability to positively impact someone’s life through dental and facial aesthetics. I then researched the full spectrum of non-surgical facial rejuvenation and skin care, and attended several courses, masterclasses and hands-on training with Dr Sotirios Foutsizoglou, a specialist in Cosmetic Surgery and Aesthetic Medicine. Since then, I have been heavily involved in facial aesthetics, not only providing non-surgical rejuvenation and skin care treatment, but also training healthcare professionals on the subject.” WHAT CAN BE ACHIEVED WITH NON-SURGICAL AESTHETIC PROCEDURES? “It is possible to enhance natural facial features with non-surgical procedures, and additionally effectively prevent and treat the signs of ageing, such as lines and creases caused by the repeated use of facial muscles (i.e. forehead lines, crow’s feet & frown lines), replenish loss of facial volume, most commonly in the lips and cheeks, and improve overall skin texture, tone and complexion with minimum or no downtime. Other procedures that also come under the nonsurgical aesthetic umbrella are treatment for excessive sweating, gummy smile, and skin hyper-pigmentation.”
98 SEPTEMBER 2016
Hello readers! It’s nice to be back writing for the Life magazines after a short summer break. This summer we went to the Cotswolds for our family holiday and I truly believe that there is nothing prettier then England when the sun is shining! ARE THESE PROCEDURES SAFE? “Yes, in the hands of a well-trained professional, these procedures are relatively safe. A major and unique advantage of non-surgical medical aesthetic procedures using neuromodulators and hyaluronic acid fillers is that they can be reversed. The key to minimise complications is to choose a well-trained professional with a good treatment portfolio who is conscientious and appreciates the limitations of the treatment.”
IS IT POSSIBLE TO IMPROVE SIGNS OF AGEING AND THE APPEARANCE OF SKIN WITHOUT LOOKING “FAKE/ PLASTIC”? “Yes, absolutely. This is one aspect of my work in which I take great pride. Research shows that dental and facial aesthetics are well-known factors strongly linked with social and professional acceptance. In addition, in a world dominated by social media, positive first impressions are especially important. Although trends in cosmetic procedures may vary globally depending on ethnic preferences, the fundamentals of health and beauty are universal. A natural look is possible to achieve through thorough patient assessment, correct anatomical and facial proportion consideration, and excellence in delivering the appropriate treatment.” WHICH PROCEDURE DO YOU RECOMMEND FOR TREATING UNEVEN PIGMENT AND SKIN WEATHERED FROM THE SUMMER SUN? “OBAGI NuDerm System. This a medical-grade skincare program that requires a supervision of a professional as some products have prescription-strength components. It is one of the most effective skin treatments for hyperpigmentation and rejuvenation. It is the Gold Standard for dermatologists, plastic surgeons and skin professionals around the world. Volume Loss: As we age, our muscles and fat diminish which can lead to facial sagging. Loss of Elasticity: Collagen and elastin production slows and skin loses elasticity as we get older which can contribute to sagging. In addition, UV damage can speed up the breakdown of collagen and elastin. Posture: Looking down frequently at mobiles, tablets and laptops shortens the neck muscles, accelerating the formation of jowls.

step 1:
FReeze The FAT WiTh CooLSCULpTing
The Ultimate Jowl Lift begins with our new Cool Mini CoolSculpting treatment. Using a process called cryolipolysis, our body contouring experts will gently draw the unwanted fat around the chin into a vacuum where it will be cooled for 45 minutes. Exposed to low temperatures, the fat cells become unstable and die. Over the next 3 months, the body naturally and permanently removes the fat cells.

LiFT WiTh SiLhoUeTTe SoFT • Multi-award winning clinic • Industry-leading results • Exceptional expertise with a team of medical practitioners, experienced aestheticians and a nutritionist • Award-winning treatments • CQC-registered
Finally, the Ultimate Jowl Lift is finished with Silhouette Soft Thread Lifting. This treatment involves our highly-trained medical practitioners carefully inserting biodegradable Poly L-Lactic Acid threads under the skin. These special threads have bio-directional cones along their length which will help lift sagging soft tissues. As well as holding the threads in place, these cones stimulate the body’s production of collagen to replace depleted facial volume. This results in a firmer, rejuvenated look.

Why ChooSe LighT ToUCh?
ULTRAcel is a revolutionary non-invasive skin tightening treatment which uses a combination of ultrasound and radio frequency to tighten sagging jowls. Firstly, your practitioner will use the radio frequency head to deliver heat energy to the collagen in the deeper layers of the skin. This causes the deep structures of the skin to tighten and, over time, new and remodelled collagen is produced. Your practitioner will next beam ultrasound waves to a controlled depth where thermal energy tightens and contracts underlying tissue. This stimulates the growth of new, healthy collagen for long-lasting and more intensive tightening. You will see an immediate improvement which will continue develop over the next 3 months.

Growing trend in women choosing midwifery led care Patient testimonial

About 100 women a year choose to deliver under our experienced midwifery led care team and we are there every step of the way to guide them through their pregnancy journey.” Their midwives specialise in supporting low-risk women who want to have a natural birth and as a result 70% of women have the birthing experience they want (this is because sometimes nature gets in the way of the

“We chose to have our baby with the Kensington Wing after being highly recommended by a friend. Having been very nervous about labour and suffering with anxiety in my pregnancy it was very impor tant to me that I met the midwife who was going to be with us on the day. Lucy made sure I met all of the lovely midwives in advance, which went above and beyond my expectations, and I was very impressed with the level of kindness and understanding that all of the team showed me. Each time I went for an appointment I was reassured and comfor ted; I felt the care I received was not only very professional but most impor tantly personal. The day I went into labour I was cared for by the lovely Ali and Sophie. I had the most amazing birth experience and that is thanks to the very special team. I'm actually looking forward to doing it again with Baby number two, that's not something I thought I would have said a few months ago! Be iN tHe CLeAr the amazing amount of red tape involved in replacement windows and doors in flats
F
lat owners or tenants in a block of flats (or people you know who live in a flat) should be advised to think very carefully indeed about replacing their windows or indeed their entrance door, as they probably won’t be aware of the minefield they are entering. The first thing they need to do is read their leaseholder agreement, then find out about the planning regulations that apply to all flats, any particular fire regulations in relation to their doors, and the specific rules that apply to
106 SEPTEMBER 2016
their particular block of flats. For example if the entrance door to the flat is a door within a door (i.e. one accesses the internal corridor to the flat via an external communal door), then any replacement front door must under the law be fire rated to protect the flat owner and all the other occupants in the block of flats. The length of fire rating required is determined by your local Fire Officer. This means one cannot fit double glazed aluminium, timber or UPVC doors that have plastic gaskets as these
can give off fumes if they melt, so none of these types of door will achieve the fire rating required. Approved and tested fire doors are usually solid hardwood slabs or steel doors with no plastic gaskets. Both these door types are expensive and it is important to research things thoroughly before splashing out on a replacement door. If the replacement door installer does not confirm in advance that they will on installation provide you with a certificate
no flat owner should replace any window without first making sure they’ve got all the necessary permissions as proof that the door has a one hour fire rating (which is the usual requirement) before you pay a penny, best walk away from the deal. Likewise no flat owner should replace any window without first making sure they’ve got all the necessary permissions, as they can end up having to pay out a fortune compared to what the replacement windows cost them in the first place, so what they should do is make sure they get all the approvals needed in writing before ordering any windows. Be aware it is the flat owners sole responsibility to find out what planning permission(s) are required from the local authority, whether the flat is in a Conservation Area or not. In addition, each flat owner needs to obtain written permission from the freeholder and/or the Management Company. If you are a tenant in a block of flats and want to change your door or windows the minefield is larger and more dangerous for you as you’ll need planning permission, your landlord’s approval and permission from the Management Company, so watch your step! The reason councils in England require planning permission is that no flat in any block of flats has any Permitted Development Rights, so crazy as as it sounds, flat owners do not have the right to change their windows or any outside door without first obtaining planning permission. This is partly so the council’s planning department keeps control on the types, materials and designs of the products being replaced. The council will most probably want replacement windows and doors to be “in-keeping” and to be of “similar appearance”. A potential grey area can occur between what some flat occupants think of as similar, and what council planning department considers similar. Each local council has the
right to force flat owners to replace and pay again for any doors or windows they’ve not had planning permission for to change. Financially this can mean a massive expense (especially if the flat in question is on the 2nd floor or above and has had internally beaded windows fitted from the inside the first time round), if the council requires the flat owner to remove the replacement windows and replace them a 2nd time round with externally beaded windows to match the other externally beaded windows already preexisting in other flats in the block. The reason being that 2nd floor and above windows can only be replaced legally and safely by the use of compliant scaffolding, which in itself can work out more expensive than the replacement windows on its own. English Councils are not slow to issue Planning Enforcement Notices to any flat owner they come across (or are told about by other flat owners) who change their doors and/or windows without planning permission. Whilst retrospective planning permission can be sought, there is no guarantee the local council’s planning department will grant this, and more often than not adds even more costs before eventually one has to replace all the replacement doors and windows for the second time anyway. Flat owners can also get into hot water by not getting written permission from the Management Company, as this can lead to time consuming on-going disputes with both them and other flat owners, and often can lead to a real problem the time comes to sell the flat, as the Management Company can hold up the sale until they have been pacified. The optimum scenario before you buy or rent a flat is therefore to choose a block of flats where modern low maintenance thermally broken doors and windows already exist throughout, so you benefit from their energy efficiency, improved sound insulation and avoid you having to pay the Management Company periodically each time for your flat’s proportion of the scaffolding and redecoration costs. Internally we would recommend a combination pull out items including shelving, drawers or shoe racks. What’s trending in storage at the moment, what have been the most popular styles? Our Heritage Style has always been and always will be a popular style choice. The panelling on the door front invokes a very classic feel. CroWN-iNG GLorY as new show site unveiled

rown Pavilions, Britain’s number one creator of outdoor garden rooms and gazebos, takes the wraps off its show-stopping new site in Denham on October 1 - the result of a six-figure investment. Partnering with Tendercare, the award-winning garden nursery in Uxbridge, Crown Pavilions will show off its finest outdoor buildings in one location for the first time and is inviting locals to come and see for themselves how its bespoke oak and cedar rooms can transform their gardens. Crown Pavilions already has an incredible reputation for its craftmanship, with celebrities such as Duncan Bannatyne, Alan Titchmarsh and Gloria Hunniford vocal in their praise. “Crown Pavilions can really change your life,” said gardening guru Titchmarsh. “These

fabulous buildings manage to extend the use of your garden at both ends of the year.” Boss Luke Dejahang is extending an open invitation to everyone to help celebrate the grand unveiling at the site “We are delighted to have found a partner in Tendercare who cares as much about the great outdoors as we do,” said Luke. “Our show site will be show-stopping - a complete look at the best buildings Crown Pavilions has to offer. “Naturally we want to celebrate this with as many people as possible, so we’re extending an invite to everyone in the local area to attend. They’ll see Crown Pavilions garden rooms and gazebos in all their glory and there’ll be some incredible offers to boot.” With prices starting at £7,000, Luke says there’s never been a better time to invest in the garden. “The last couple of months have proved that the weather can have a big impact on our lives but it’s very much a case of ‘if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em!” he said. “Our garden rooms enable everyone to enjoy their garden all year round and our 30-year guarantee gives peace of mind too.” Oxfordshire-based Crown Pavilions has been making gazebos and garden rooms for more than a decade. The south east is a huge hotspot for the company which has recently unveiled sponsorship of the exclusive St George’s Hill Tennis Club in Weybridge. Luke said garden rooms and gazebos are increasingly
being seen as the ultimate must-have outside the back door. “Our customers’ needs have changed in the last few years - many don’t want to move or extend as they’ve already done that, so they’re looking to make the most of the garden instead,” he says. “It’s pretty much the last area that’s in need of a makeover. “Forget the rickety old summer houses of yesteryear - nowadays people want all the tech they enjoy inside the house to be on-hand outside too. “We focus very much on quality and longevity - we use the finest materials (Canadian cedar, Cumbrian slate) because our garden rooms are significant investments. They’re insulated, heated, secure extensions of someone’s home and our customers want their personality to be reflected in their building too.”

ountrywide Pianos has been proudly serving both the local and wider community since 1986 and we have developed from small beginnings to become the largest, premier showroom in the SouthEast of England. The piano’s magical sound is created by the player pressing any one of its 88 keys, which creates a note. This happens through a complex hammer-on-string mechanism, which needs to be perfectly regulated and tuned. In the 1900’s a piano which played by itself, by reading a punched out paper roll, was all the rage. Today pianos are sophisticated musical instruments, which may not only play themselves but can be enhanced by full orchestral and vocal parts – in essence providing a live orchestral performance in your own sitting room. Today the punched out paper rolls have been replaced with the very latest digital technology, incorporated within a real acoustic piano, which can be played as a regular piano. Seeing, however is believing and a visit to Countrywide Pianos for a full demonstration is recommended. Our showroom is an array of both new and pre loved pianos with a price range to suit all pockets -from the upright piano to the very largest of full size concert grand piano, self player pianos, ‘Silent’ Yamaha pianos, together with the ultimate in electric digital pianos, you really will find it fun making your choice and for those who may need assistance there is always help and advice on hand.
