The new Comitti BREVA 35 Motorboat

E

makes its debut in the UK this Autumn

ntrepreneur & philanthropist Dr Karen Dickens is launching her new company and dealership Comitti Boats UK & Caribbean this Autumn. The company will be debuting the next generation of Comitti boats the BREVA 35 in the UK while promoting all four Comitti model families that encapsulate ‘Not only a boat, a lifestyle’ VENEZIA - BREVA - ISOLA - DI LEGNO. “Comitti is a small company in northern Italy and one of the few remaining Italian shipyards with a tradition of building classically designed Italian motor boats,” explains Karen. “It was through my initial purchase and semi-bespoke design of a VENEZIA 34 - ‘Octopussy’ and then building my new Comitti BREVA 35 - ‘Property of a Lady’ that I realised I wanted to be directly involved in expanding the reach of Comitti into new markets. I’m also planning to launch a new luxury boat charter business in 2021 featuring a selection of beautiful Comitti boats.”

“With 15 different models in the fleet, Comitti is the perfect brand to satisfy connoisseurs” Bringing these iconic Italian motor boats to a much wider audience, across multiple markets and geographies is Karen’s aim. With 15 different models in the fleet, Comitti is the perfect brand to satisfy connoisseurs - from day cruisers and pleasure seekers, to Superyacht tenders and those looking for commercial and resort business use. The latest model family is BREVA, offering a contemporary evolution of a classical Italian design that remains timeless and ignores styling trends, available in 35ft or 29ft with a 42ft and 26ft currently in development. The classical VENEZIA range offers an iconic design in five different lengths (34ft, 31ft, 28ft, 25ft and 22ft) each in four different levels of finish: Elegance, Classic Teak, Classic Mahogany and Sport. The ISOLA family currently available in 33ft with other sizes planned for the future, focuses on an open bow layout & central helm station allowing for full walk-around access to forward 1 2 NO V E M B E R 2 0 2 0

and aft dining/sunbathing areas. Specified with either outboards or sterndrives, a fixed stainless steel Bimini makes her an ideal family day boat or when specified with British diesel outboards by COX Power she becomes an incredibly elegant and versatile tender/chase boat. The DI LEGNO models - PORTOFINO and SANREMO - embody the company’s heritage of fine craftsmanship using traditional materials while maintaining that bygone golden era of 1960’s Italian wooden boat design. Prices range from £120,000 to £425,000 (+VAT and taxes), and the team offer a personal service from start to finish, and throughout ownership. The semi-bespoke design features and choices available are particularly personal to Karen who has sought out external design specialists that offer the same quality, craftmanship and attention to detail that the boats offer themselves. Karen uses all these specialists herself so can attest to their quality. Karen is also passionate about the charities she supports both directly and through the company. One per cent of all UK sales will go to the Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust (cornwallairambulancetrust.org) as well as supporting the charity’s soon to be launched 12 Days of Christmas Challenge to raise much needed funds. In the Caribbean, the team will be supporting the Barbados children’s charity naturesfunranch.org.

T

he folks at Silent Pool Gin have been rather busy of late. Travelling the globe in search of the world’s rarest and most intriguing citrus fruits to grace their new gin - the first major launch under the Silent Pool Gin brand since that iconic teal and copper bottle first burst onto the craft gin scene back in 2014. So cue a not-sosilent fanfare for Silent Pool Rare Citrus Gin. They may have taken a path less travelled to arrive at this alluring new gin but one sip and you realise that the destination is every bit as rewarding as the journey. This wonderfully complex spirit balances bright and zesty with subtly sweet, beautifully aromatic and delicately spiced for a truly satisfying taste experience.

But what’s so rare about the citrus? Well on their journey to locate the finest citrus fruits, the team at Silent Pool Distillers searched the globe and eventually unearthed two renowned citrus collectors who share their relentless passion for creativity and excellence. Leaving their busy lives and careers in Paris in 2001, Ann and Jean Paul Brigand moved to the gorgeous Alentejo coast in Portugal and set about building their home, Lugar do Olhar Feliz. The duo has a particular passion for citrus and have made it their mission to help young Portuguese farmers and chefs (and bartenders, of course) to discover and fall in love with citrus as they have done. Now boasting a citrus collection of more than 300 varieties imported from the far flung corners

Rare Citrus Negroni • 40ml Silent Pool Rare Citrus, • 20ml Campari • 20ml Sweet Vermouth Add the above ingredients to a rocks glass with ice, stir and then top up with more ice. Garnish with a twist of pink grapefruit.

Rare Citrus Gimlet

of the planet (Yes you read right, 300!) Ann and Jean Paul have one of the largest and finest citrus collections in the world. When Silent Pool Distillers visited their citrus grove, it far exceeded all expectations. Head Distiller Tom Hutchings says ‘We were just blown away by what we found. Hundreds of the rarest and most incredible citrus. The aromas and tastes were like nothing we’d experienced before’. The team sampled dozens of citrus varieties before selecting the most interesting and aromatic flavours to take back to the distillery to begin formulating their distinctive new gin. After much recipe development the team settled on four lead varieties. Inside the zesty tipple you’ll find Buddha’s hand, Green Seville Orange, Natsu Dai Dai (a hybrid of orange and pomelo), and lastly, Hirado Buntan (a type of pomelo). Not an easy task balancing all those different types of citrus in the final distillation. How have they done it you ask? The distillers have adopted the same bespoke 4-stage production approach used to create Silent Pool Gin to produce remarkable layers of ever-changing flavour.

The result? A masterfully distilled and beautifully aromatic gin with a unique taste. Call this a flavoured gin though and Head Distiller Tom Hutchings will wince. ‘Please don’t mention the F word. As with Silent Pool Gin, this is a naturally distilled gin where all the flavours are captured in the distillation itself with no artificial colourings or flavour compounds added in afterwards. We’re passionate about making proper gins in the right way. This is a naturally distilled gin with oodles of classic juniper to be enjoyed, complemented with wonderfully complex layers of citrus and spice’. If that hasn’t got your mouth watering, we spoke to the team at the surrey-hills based distillery to ask how best to enjoy this rare citrus gin. So here are five different ways to enjoy this lovely new gin. silentpooldistillers.com

CLANDON WOOD A local nature reserve which is also a national award winning cemetery – and it’s on the doorstep!

C

omprising thirty-one acres of traditional wildflower meadowland, lakes and young woodland, on arriving at Clandon Wood it is hard to recognise it as a cemetery. Opened in 2012 this award winning naturally managed burial ground was created to appeal to a wide range of people wishing to be buried or have their ashes interred whatever their faith, belief or thinking. However, it has also been designed as a nature reserve and is thoughtfully managed by a professional team who are experts in conservation and arboriculture. Their aim is to create an ideal and protected habitat for indigenous flora and fauna to flourish which local people will be able to enjoy for future generations to come. As a cemetery Clandon Wood provides a peaceful and natural environment to be laid to rest and a place those left behind will feel welcome and at ease visiting for contemplation and remembrance. If planning ahead plots can be purchased in advance of being needed as well of course at the time of bereavement, located anywhere one chooses within the grounds which could be amongst the flowers and grasses of the meadows, between the trees or near one of the two lakes. During more normal times the attractive modern glass pavilion within the grounds is used for funeral services which is also used for gatherings or wakes after a committal. And there is an on-site office open and staffed by Clandon Wood’s friendly team seven days a week. However, under the restrictions resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic all funeral services are now conducted outside which in the beautiful and natural surroundings have proved very popular, with up to 30 mourners being allowed to attend.

1 8 NO V E M B E R 2 0 2 0

And for those not able to be present the live outdoor webcast service has been widely used, with one recent service attracting over 80 invited viewers. It is hoped to open the pavilion for funeral services again as the days become cooler and to allow for a similar number of mourners in attendance. Christina Lawson, who manages the on-site team says: “We work hard to provide a warm and welcoming environment for any visitor be they bereaved, someone who is planning ahead and thinking about securing a plot or if just to visit us as a nature reserve.” The only way to really appreciate what Clandon Wood has to offer is to come and see it first hand. And in Christina’s words: “you will always be very welcome”. And on a final note Clandon Wood is delighted that it has just received the Natural Burial Ground of the Year 2020 Gold Award for the second year running. clandonwood.com

he first-ever made Hermès Birkin bag owned by Jane Birkin and Mulberry handbags worn by Kate Moss and Alexa Chung will join almost 300 standout pieces in the V&A’s next fashion exhibition Bags: Inside Out. The exhibition will be UK’s most comprehensive exhibition dedicated to the ultimate accessory. From designer handbags to despatch boxes, vanity cases to military rucksacks, it will explore our long standing fascination with the bag. Actress and singer Jane Birkin and the former executive chairman of Hermès Jean-Louis Dumas met on a flight from Paris to London. Jane complained that she could not find a bag suitable to carry her belongings and to fit her needs as a young mother. Dumas sketched on an aeroplane sickness-bag a supple rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching. The bag named after Jane, became a sensation appealing to women looking for something spacious and fashionable. The ‘Birkin’ has since become an undeniable symbol of wealth and luxury. We have received a significant amount of interest and have recorded a higher than average number of viewings and sales right now. We have just agreed the sale of our final house within our first Phase, totalling over £25million, so we now look forward

Skate back in time at the Hampton Court Palace Ice Rink

S

kate back in time this winter with an unforgettable visit to the Hampton Court Palace Ice Rink, situated in the grounds of King Henry VIII’s stunning Tudor palace. One of the highlights of the festive calendar, skaters can enjoy spectacular riverside views by day, before the historic façade is lit up at night, creating a dramatic backdrop to any session. This year will feature an even larger rink, giving skaters the space to enjoy a memorable day out on the ice. With new measures having been introduced to ensure that every visit is safe and secure, skaters can relax and enjoy the festive atmosphere. There’ll be hygiene standards fit for a king or a queen, as well as staggered skate sessions, ensuring fewer people on the ice at any one time. Little ones can also find their feet with the assistance of the penguin or dolphin skate aids available to hire – just remember that pre-booking is required! Once you’ve worked up an appetite on the ice, it’s time to head inside and satisfy those cravings at the Ice Rink Café and Bar. Tuck into hearty winter warming dishes, indulgent treats and a range of delicious hot and cold beverages, all created by Miss Polly’s. For anyone not wanting to brave the ice itself, snacks can also be enjoyed from the specially designed spectator area to ensure no one misses out on the action!

One of the most famous buildings in Britain, visitors can explore the grand State Apartments, where festive events have taken place for almost 500 years, and see the palace dressed for the season with traditional decorations from across

Loaf cakes and ‘gâteaux de voyage’ – cakes historically designed to last throughout long pilgrimages – sit on the counter, from lemon madeleines to walnut financiers and chouquettes, alongside a special exclusive from The River Café, a long-time friend of The Connaught. Their Chocolate Nemesis are hand delivered daily to The Connaught Patisserie – the first time the cake has been available outside of its home. The counter is also home to an array of 10 seasonal patisserie – the true showstoppers in the shop. Included are classics such as Paris-Brest, Apple Tatin and St Honoré, and others showcasing

isit the beautiful scenery of Windsor Great Park for yourself, and share in the experience that generations of the Monarchy have enjoyed throughout history.

Royal associations Windsor Great Park has witnessed countless events throughout history, dating back to preSaxon times, each of which has left its own distinctive mark on this impressive landscape. Although it wasn’t until the 13th Century that the areas making up Windsor Great Park were properly defined, creating an incredible variety of landscapes across the 4,800 acres that have grown and been developed over time. There is a fascinating Royal heritage at Windsor Great Park that’s just waiting to be discovered. When you wander through the Great Park you’ll encounter Royal residences, formal gardens and trees that have stood for over 1,000 years - with each twisting pathway promising a journey through England’s history. From William I using the landscape as a hunting ground a thousand years ago, to the original planting of the Long Walk by Charles II, to Queen Victoria entertaining on the shores of Virginia Water - and even today our Royal connections continue to be as strong as ever under the stewardship of HRH the Duke of Edinburgh, the Ranger of Windsor Great Park. The exotic displays and National Collections will impress even the most seasoned gardener, and also provide an abundance of subject material for photographers of all levels. You can’t help but be amazed by the stunning Autumn Colour for which Windsor Great Park is famous – especially the maples and cherries in The Savill Garden and The Valley Gardens. At this time of year the fungi displays are also outstanding, but please remember not to pick them! And do keep watch when in the Deer Park, as it’s rutting season, which can be very exciting when our stags lock antlers.

Tom Leighton

City Constructs Virtual Exhibition at www.tleighton.com until 12th December 2020

T

om Leighton’s works reveal the poetic beauty that that results from painstaking digital manipulation. Leighton has travelled through Europe, Asia and North America, building up an impressive body of photographic images that he then combines to make fantastical landscapes. The resulting works challenge our perception and test our memory. Do I recognise that building? Where are those mountains? How do I get the measure of this? What are those people doing? Adding to a sense of wondrous unease is the kaleidoscopic effect created by repeated motifs and themes, enhanced by Leighton’s clever use of colour. Subtle mirror images startle us. We look for patterns within the work, mining the minute details for meanings. The landscapes are beautiful, empty and reflective, or populated and celebratory: crowds swell and disperse, evoking both exuberant joy and hidden unease. Crowds fill the spaces Leighton creates, channelled by the architecture. We as viewers look at the scenes from privileged vantage points mainly above the crowds. We are observers and participants, able to take in the images as we wish: we can analyse, search, reflect and wonder. This is an exhibition to marvel at.

About the virtual exhibition: This virtual exhibition is of work first seen in solo shows over the past decade. For the first time these images are hung together, creating a 4 2 NO V E M B E R 2 0 2 0

new dialogue between the hundreds of photos which are the constituents of each composition, the timing of the original shoots - and the year of completion of each work. In the process, they provide a powerful memory of how the cityscape was, before a time of Covid. For all that we might miss the encounter with work in a physical gallery, there are advantages to curating and exhibiting virtually. Here I have had total freedom of selection, great accessibility and, let’s face it, an easy install! I will also have the opportunity to update the curation and add rooms to make the exhibition evolve, again unique to showing as a digital experience. My work is deliberately sited on the spectrum that stretches

from the virtual to what is real. There is a deliberate relationship between the digital and the physical. Physical places that I visit are digitised in camera and presented as physical works on a wall which are here digitally represented in a virtual 3D space. This is work made before Covid - and becomes particularly relevant now, as our city centres become emptier places. The purpose and use of city space has always informed my work. These are images of people moving in an intricate mass through the city of crowds gathering at iconic landmarks. The exhibition now provides a powerful historical comment on this process in a time of Covid, as social distancing is now applied to environments that were not designed for a luxury of personal space. And just as crowds now become illegal, now you view this exhibition in a space that you need not share with anyone else.

Biography Tom Leighton is an artist, photographer and printmaker. Fascinated by the urban environment, he has photographed and worked with iconic and hidden architecture world-wide. He layers and manipulates images to build increasingly elaborate

megastructures, asking how our cities will cope and change with expanding populations, and how these populations will live and move within these urban centres. He has photographed both ancient cities and the newest cities built on land reclaimed from the sea. Trained at the Royal College of Art, London, Leighton expertly manipulates images to allow us to imagine alternative cities of the present and the future. He seeks beauty in everything, from functional buildings to the most ornate architecture. He repeats motifs in unexpected places, repositions existing structures and contrasts the natural and the artificial: bright city lights set against natural night skies, concrete against greenery, business against eerie nighttime stillness. Leighton asks us to reconsider our cities, what they are and what they might become. He pushes us to notice the beauty inherent in these populated places, the architecture and our place within it. At once futuristic and reflective, Leighton’s work demands multiple takes. Website: tleighton.com Instagram: @tomleightonart Email: info@tleighton.com

14 November 2020 to 9 January 2021

Special exhibition: Art in Nature Artists have always been inspired by nature, the patters of flowers and plants and the colours of four seasons. Nature remains the primary referent and is more important than ever: our local landscape and the green English countryside have given many of us so much comfort and joy during this difficult year. This exhibition brings together a group of artists and makers who share the love of nature. 5 2 NO V E M B E R 2 0 2 0

Special exhibition: Sarah Spackman: Specific beauty Sarah Spackman’s work is distinguished by a strength of drawing, together with a delicate and subtle use of colour. Sarah has become particularly well known for her still-life paintings. She works in a quiet considered way applying the principle that good drawing is the basis of good painting. Sarah uses colour to enhance the organisation and definition of observed form. Sarah considers the setting up of a still life a crucial part of the process: focusing on the objects themselves, everyday objects

Sarah’s work will be shown with still live glass maestro Elliot Walker, associated with the London Glassblowing Studios. Elliot is one of a handful of glassblowers in the world who focus solely on figurative sculpture. Sculpting in molten glass is known as the Messello technique, and working this way requires extreme dexterity, speed and precise temperature control. He chooses to sculpt in glass mainly for the material’s immediacy and transparency and for the intensity of the sculpting experience.

CRAFT MEETS ART

L

aunching natural texture frescos and art objects for minimalist, neutral and artful interiors from Vacarda Design Vacarda Design studio has launched several new collections of original décor and limited series artworks, all exquisitely handmade with Italian plaster. By reinventing traditional material and craftsmanship techniques, Tanya Vacarda, the brand face of Vacarda Design, creates artisan art objects with beautiful texture and organic design that invite soothing energy and tranquillity to any interior settings.

INTERTWINED: A New Tradition Introducing an original collection of plaster weave tapestries that explores the relationship between the material, form and craft. Traditionally, plaster is seen as a sub-serving material that can only exist as a surface coating. By treating it as a textile, Vacarda gives the plaster pliability and the independence to take on new forms and surprising shapes. Each hanging is crafted as one-of-a-kind work, unique to Vacarda Design. It is hand-made by fusing Italian plaster with chiffon, cutting it into strips and weaving together in a pattern suggested by the dynamics between the strips. The result is a unique pliable plaster tapestry with a loose, unrepeatable design. Created in milky white colour with earthy tints of brown, these small decorative hangings are perfect for minimalist and natural colour palette settings with an artsy character.

FINE ART: Tactile Silhouettes

“Transience” is the limited series of original portraits that explores the definitions of beauty. Made exclusively with Italian plaster on canvas in 5 8 NO V E M B E R 2 0 2 0

Tanya Vacarda’s own technique and style, these exceptionally textured artworks are unusually tactile and nothing like you have seen in the world of figurative art before.

THE RENEWED ART OF FRESCO: Embracing The Flow A search for balance between natural imperfection, the random and visual harmony, the Aurora Etudes series of fresco paintings is all about organic design flow and striking texture that are soothing and calming. You will never see a pattern that repeats itself. Instead, your eye and hand will wander across the random lines and marks of the trowel, finding new details every time. Naturally. Made in earthy tones of clay, coco, milk, light grey and damask rose, these fresco paintings invite the grounding energy of nature to the settings, enhancing any interior, by capturing the process when the random becomes beautiful. vacardadesign.com

ABOUT VACARDA DESIGN Vacarda Design, founded by Tanya Vacarda in 2018, specialises in artisan wall coverings with a serious textural appeal. Using Italian plasters and her own unique technique, Tanya Vacarda creates one-of-a-kind art objects and artistic finishes that have the flexibility and mobility that a modern and more fluid way of life demands without compromising on the authenticity of material and the craft. Tanya Vacarda’s technique has evolved from the craft of Italian plasterers and fresco artists. By blending pigments with Italian plaster and applying it in thin layers upon each other, Tanya creates tactile surface designs with unique colour patterns that are then enhanced with paint, delicate embroidery, silk and other textile embellishments. Each work requires skills, time and the right state of mind to become a timeless piece of art. “My craft and art are driven by the passion for authenticity, the need for a mindful approach to the creative process and respect for the craft. These are the qualities that, for me, define luxury and make it timeless. My style is not about chasing perfection. It evolved from observing nature and learning about how it turns random coincidences into something incredibly beautiful, creating harmonious patterns out of a series of imperfections.”

Tighten your skin, reduce sagging, wrinkles and fine lines! Dr Peter Forrester and Ms Helen McEnvoy offer the option of combining Profhilo with INTRAcel, our proven and long-established radio-frequency micro-needling treatment. Together they are an unbeatable combination. INTRAcel

Profhilo

Dr Peter Forrester and Ms Helen McEnvoy have been using INTRAcel skin rejuvenation for over 5 years. During this time they have witnessed the introduction of many other non-surgical skintightening treatments. Usually well publicised, celebrity endorsed and very expensive. They are promoted with before and after photographs showing results that are rarely achievable in practice. Dr Forrester and Ms McEnvoy continue to be impressed with the results of INTRAcel and believe that it offers a better and more cost effective result than most of the new ‘trendy’ techniques. INTRAcel cleverly combines the two established techniques of micro-needling and radio-frequency (RF) skin tightening. INTRAcel delivers short bursts of RF energy into the deeper layers of the skin. Recovery from an INTRAcel treatment is usually quick; at the end of the treatment the skin will be red like a sunburn sensation for a few hours, this will diminish after 1-2 days. A toned and tightened effect will be immediately noticeable after a treatment but the full effect will develop over the subsequent weeks. There will be improvement after the first treatment, however a course of 3 at 4-6 week intervals is recommended. Following this improvements will continue for up to 6 months as healthy collagen develops.

Profhilo is an exciting and unique rejuvenation product for the face, neck and décolletage, being unlike any other skin treatment on the market. Dr Forrester and Ms McEnvoy always look critically at new treatments and never jump on the bandwagon until they have had time to evaluate the exaggerated claims made by some manufacturers and occasionally other practitioners. They have regularly used Profhilo since Summer 2017 and hence have had a good opportunity to evaluate its effects. They are now convinced Profhilo is a safe, effective and innovative product. Profhilo is designed to improve skin laxity, texture and lines by stimulating collagen and elastin production. This effect combined with increased hydration will produce a subtle lifting and tightening effect. Although Profhilo is composed of Hyaluronic

Acid (HA) it is not a filler and is aimed at achieving a very different effect from all the currently available HA fillers such as Restylane, Juvederm or Belotero. It will not add excessive volume and hence there is no risk that a Profhilo treatment will result in an obviously filled or ‘pillow face’ look. It is manufactured by IBSA, a long-established and highly reputable Swiss company and was first launched in Italy in 2015 and subsequently in

the UK in January 2016. Since launch there have been an increasing number of positive reviews and opinions in the media. A Profhilo treatment is quick and easy. Just 5 small injections of Profhilo are administered to each side of the face. Discomfort is minimal and other than the possibility for a small bruise there is no downtime. There will be an initial increase in hydration, but the main effects will build over the following weeks. A second treatment must be given 4 weeks later to maximise the beneficial effects.

Profhilo can: • Improve overall skin quality • Increase skin firmness • Increase hydration and elasticity of the skin

Caped crusaders:

How this timeless classic can transform your autumn wardrobe Prudence Wade takes a look back at the history of the cape, and how it’s being styled today.

I

nstead of moping over the end of summer, cheer yourself up by adding a bit of autumnal drama into your wardrobe. And what better way to do so than with a cape? Capes are the perfect option for confusing, in between weather – they drape delicately over the shoulders, and can be adjusted according to temperature. Like any other trend, the style has fluctuated in and out of fashion – and this autumn, it’s set to be one of the biggest trends in outerwear. But before looking at why everyone from Dior to Celine have fallen back in love with capes, it’s important to understand the style’s history…

Early beginnings… Now, capes might seem modern and fresh, but the style certainly has a storied past. Over the years, it’s proved a uniquely democratic item of clothing, worn by people of all social statuses. This could be down to its simplicity – all that’s required is a single piece of material, fastened at the throat. Peasants, clergy and nobles alike have worn cloaks from the Roman era through to medieval times and onwards, but all styled slightly differently. After all, not quite everyone could afford the opulent, fur-lined, trailing capes of Henry VIII – peasants were far more likely to fling a length of scratchy sack cloth over their shoulders for warmth.

Different manifestations throughout the 20th century… Fashion hasn’t been immune to the charms of a cape. It saw a particular resurgence in popularity in the 1920s, when upper-class women realised it could be more easily worn over their full-skirted dresses than a coat. The 1960s saw another manifestation of capes, this time styled into brightly-coloured rain jackets by designers like Mary Quant. Again in the Seventies, poncho styles with intricate knitting 6 8 NO V E M B E R 2 0 2 0

and patterns became all the rage among hippies – something Burberry brought back in the 2010s with the help of models like Kate Moss and Cara Delevingne.

Capes today… Over the last decade, the place you’re most likely to see a cape is the red carpet. The past year alone has seen the Duchess of Sussex wearing a caped fire-engine red evening gown, and Angelina Jolie’s flowing, ethereal outfit for the Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil premiere. There’s something about the drama of a cape, which can be swished around as you leave a room, that makes it perfect for the red carpet. Other than the odd Burberry poncho, capes haven’t been hugely popular in fashion outside of formalwear: until now. The autumn/winter catwalks were full of cloaks, showing just how many ways they can be worn with inspirations plucked from different eras. One of the most wearable ways to style a cape this season is all about keeping things classic in sleek camel colours with gold accents, as seen on the Celine runway. Seventies fashion is still having a moment, and Miu Miu made its cape out of the 1970s favourite of shearling – adding texture and warmth to the style. Dior and Roland Mouret combined capes with another big trend of the season – check – which will no doubt prove just as timeless as camel styles. Another popular style is – gasp – actually practical for the changeable weather. Waterproof,

utility-style capes – often with zips, hoods and pockets – show you can be chic and practical at the same time. For a more Gothic take on the trend, go for a simple and chic charcoal grey style – as seen at Michael Kors and the Dior front row. The best thing about capes is how easy they are to style. You barely need to think about the rest of your outfit, because tossing over a cape will lend an easy elegance – not to mention some much-needed warmth. If you are stuck, we particularly like cloaks worn with skinny jeans and boots – to keep everything streamlined, making the cape the star of the show. Throughout history, capes have been worn by all manner of people – and this year, high end and high street designers show there really are no limits to how you wear yours. Although there is one restriction – no arms, please.

CHARLOTTE BOUTIQUE Zoë Charlotte Donovan, Founder & Director talks to Life Magazines

W

hen I left my job of 15 years to realise my ambition of founding a mid to high end ladies fashion boutique, I had no idea what the impact of COVID-19 would have on my plans. My vision was to stock a combination of classic styles and colours to cater for the effortless chic everyday look, and also for occasions when only a stand-out statement will do. I never enjoyed fast fashion and made the commitment to only stock clothes of quality fabrics and production in styles and prints which will be loved forever, with a small selection of fine jewellery and accessories sourced from designers with pedigree or who had something special. When the pandemic hit, I was forced to abandon plans for a bricks and mortar store in Surrey and was forced to look at how I could make the best of a terrible situation and grow a new business in a competitive space, so I opened online only in May. It was already difficult for a start-up to predict how they’d do in “normal” times, during a pandemic it was impossible. Spring was uncertain but I made steady progress and in Summer we took off and the business flourished, 7 0 NO V E M B E R 2 0 2 0

with happy clients and gaining wonderful feedback on our stock and service. Now we’ve moved into Autumn and times are as uncertain as ever, but I am very excited about our Autumn and Winter stock and I have just held our first photoshoot as so many designers have been unable to provide images due to the lockdowns globally! With risk assessments completed, hand wash and wipes everywhere, a blessing from the council and a tight two-day schedule with a team comprised of a wonderful, talented bunch who were only too happy to help their friend’s new business. Offering their professional skills in photography and make-up and models who have never worked as pro models before (you wouldn’t know!), they did a fabulous job and completed the shoot over a weekend in October. Over Sushi, pizza, chocolate and the odd glass of fizz we got the job done, showcasing Dom Goor Knitwear, MayaH jewellery, Belli Grau Handbags, ella & Il dresses, Venera Arapu dresses and a first for this flourishing business, own our label winter coats by “Zoë Charlotte”. It’s an unpredictable time, but I hope you like the end result of the shoot and use our delivered to your door, Try Before You Buy service. What will 2020 bring next!

Chilli No. 5 - Hot Sauce Reimagined

Join The Revolution

H

ot sauce has been reimagined courtesy of Chilli No. 5, a new gourmet chilli sauce company. Launched in October, Chilli No. 5 offers a collection of 13 designer hot sauces that not only taste great, but contain superfoods with reported health benefits. Inspired by international cuisines from across the globe, hot sauce lovers can add depth of flavour and heat to a wide range of dishes. Tempting hot sauces include Wicked Wasabi, Perfect Piri Piri, Jamaican Jerk, Sriracha Cha-ChaCha, Heavenly Harissa, Forever Phall, and Chinese Hot & Sour, to name just a few. Each sauce is made with only the very finest ingredients from across the globe, and also features an exclusive blend of five chillies and six powerful supplements – inulin, maca powder, red ginseng, L-Arginine, guarana, and fenugreek. The supplements have been purposefully handpicked due to their wide range of reported health benefits, from helping to boost energy, to aiding weight loss or easing the symptoms of depression and anxiety. Adding further health credentials, the hot sauces also boast a plethora

7 2 NO V E M B E R 2 0 2 0

of superfoods such as black garlic, fresh ginger, nutmeg, and apple cider vinegar. They are also vegan, wheat free, and are free from any artificial colourings or flavourings.

Motivated by the lockdown Chilli No. 5 is the brainchild of Monaco entrepreneur Rumble Romagnoli and superyacht chef Colin Ross. The dynamic duo complement each other perfectly. Romagnoli is an established business entrepreneur and successful marketer for luxury brands, while Ross is a pedigree chef who has catered to the world’s most discerning palates on luxury superyachts across the globe. The inspiration for the brand came during the height of the pandemic. Forced to remain at home during lockdown, Romagnoli quickly became frustrated that he was unable to create the depth of flavours typically found in restaurant dishes. And with lots of hungry mouths to feed – Romagnoli is a father to three demanding underfives – creating tasty, healthy meals at home was quickly becoming a frustrating challenge. It was Romagnoli’s lightbulb moment. “I founded Chilli No. 5 because it was

“Each sauce is made with only the very finest ingredients from across the globe, and also features an exclusive blend of five chillies and six powerful supplements”

impossible to find high-quality, healthy, sustainable hot chilli sauces at the supermarket,” Romagnoli explained. “This became even more apparent during lockdown. People were cooking more at home than they had for years and were discovering how challenging it was to recreate their favourite bold flavours.” But, simply creating incredible tasting hot sauces wasn’t enough for the dynamic entrepreneur. “I didn’t want our sauces to be just about incredible flavour,” Romagnoli explained. “I wanted them to be much more than that. I wanted to make sure they were made with only the very finest ingredients as well as being as healthy as possible. So, we made sure to add natural superfoods known to contain powerful antioxidants, along with a selection of supplements. With our designer hot sauces, we aim to offer more for those who wish to lead a healthier and more active lifestyle.”

“It was important to both myself and chef Colin that we not only created tasty and healthy hot sauces, but ones that were packaged in the most environmentally friendly way possible”

Sustainable principles Not only did Romagnoli want to create a luxury hot sauce brand that boasted incredible tasting hot sauces, but he also wanted to ensure that the newly founded company placed a high value on sustainability. Each designer hot sauce is available in an elegant 200 ml keepsake glass bottle, which can be refilled courtesy of lightweight 100 ml recyclable stand-up pouches.

The considerable benefit of glass packaging is that it offers a closed-loop recycling process, meaning it can be recycled again-and-again helping to minimise the use of earth’s precious natural resources. The stand-up refillable pouches are land-fill friendly and 6x more sustainable than a plastic bottle. “We all must do what we can to minimise our carbon footprint and reduce waste,” Romagnoli said. “It was important to both myself and chef Colin that we not only created tasty and healthy hot sauces, but ones that were packaged in the most environmentally friendly way possible.” He added: “In addition to earth-friendly packaging, we have gone one step further by offering a money-back programme to customers who return the refillable pouches or glass bottles, which will then be sent for recycling.” In addition to the full-sized glass bottles and pouches, Chilli No. 5 also offers numerous gift collections, with each sauce housed in a refillable glass test tube, or vial. “Not only are our hot sauce gift set collections a great way to try a selection of our hot sauces, but the vials are also designed to be compact enough to be carried around while on the go. So, with our vials you can always elevate any dish, even if it is a working lunch while at your desk,” Romagnoli explained. Chill No. 5 hot sauces will be sold on the Chilli No.5 website and through Instagram and Facebook, alongside exclusive sauce tasting/gifting collections and merchandising. The sauces are also available through a subscription programme; The Sauce of Life. “Chilli No. 5 is here to make your life more delicious, exciting, and extraordinary,” Romagnoli said “it really is Chilli Saucery. Join the Revolution.” NO V E M B E R 2 0 2 0 7 3

5 trends in aesthetic medicine in Autumn 2020

W

e may not have had access to our skin clinics for much of this year, but curiosity around skin health and what new treatments are out there grew exponentially during lockdown as people had more time to explore social media. Dr Kim Prescott explores a few of the current trends in aesthetic medicine.

confidence and good health. The demand for more subtle, less invasive, treatments is increasing, including softer antiwrinkle treatments and a drop-off in requests for traditional dermal filler. Collagen induction and biostimulation are the hottest search terms, with treatments like radiofrequency microneedling (eg VoluDerm HE, Morpheus 8 and Potenza) and Profhilo dominating the searches and the media attention.

It used to be that the reassurance for having had “good work” was that your friends would ask for your doctor’s phone number. But times are changing, anti-ageing science and technology are advancing, and increasingly, the best indication of a successful “tweak” is that your friends tell you that you’re looking relaxed. More people are looking for ways to achieve a naturally refreshed appearance, communicating graceful self-

Celebrities coming out of lockdown with a desperation to deal with the dreaded Zoom Face ensured that treatments that deliver fast and effective results have been a hot topic on social media. It seems to make sense that having 2 or 3 treatments at a time instead of only 1 should lead to greater satisfaction, and every aesthetic clinic now has their own version of the combination

Results of a Pyramid FaceLift

superfacial. Some of these treatments are more hydrating and reviving like the Geneo 4-in-1 and the Hydrafacial, but others will combine regenerative medicine with microneedling, radiofrequency, ultrasound and/or lasers for advanced skin rejuvenation. The most advanced treatments aim to address every layer of the face, helping to achieve results that are described as rivalling a face lift, but with minimal downtime. Mixed modality treatments like the celebrity favourite, the Pyramid FaceLift, will induce collagen production, tighten, volumise and resurface the skin, and tone the facial muscles and the all-important SMAS layer of the lower face for a non-surgical lifting of the face and neck. The difficulty for many doctors has been a lack of evidence for the improved efficacy of these combinations. Treatments often combine technologies from rival companies and regenerative treatments that have only recently been accepted as having scientific validity, so reports at conferences have been largely anecdotal. As aesthetic medicine has moved back into the academic arena there has been a demand for robust evidence encouraging technology companies to partner with academic researchers to conduct clinical studies. This has gone a long way to providing reassurance for some of these treatments, and it is worth requesting this evidence from your clinic before investing in your skin.

PRP combined with microneedling to prevent hair loss

Kourtney Kardashian underwent a hair restoration procedure and documented her experiences on Keeping Up With the Kardashians, helping to popularise a treatment that was already widely used for facial rejuvenation (partly thanks to Kim Kardashian who filmed herself undergoing a Vampire Facial at the height of her social media fame). The use of platelet rich plasma combined with microneedling, or administered via a special needling device (Aquagold® or Wow® Infusion), is widely used to repair damaged follicles and encourage thicker, fuller hair growth in both women and men. It is advisable to have this procedure performed in a specialist clinic, and is usually done in conjunction with supplements, medication and lasers.

Jawline definition Well defined jawlines and smooth necks have always been more difficult to achieve in ageing skin - as we know from witnessing countless Hollywood personalities with unlimited budgets and turned-up collars. Requests for treatments to refine the jawline and help manage double-chins are increasingly coming from those in their 20s and 30s, in order to enhance their selfie profiles. The skin in this area is thinner, with less natural oil production, so has traditionally been a more difficult area to manage. Newer technologies like RF microneedling have changed this equation, along with new fillers and superior thread-lift techniques that allow for some impressive nonsurgical lifting of the neck and jawline.

The skin reflects whole body health The pandemic has heightened our awareness of the impact of our lifestyle and environment on our whole body and the need to address inflammation and cellular health. The skin is the largest organ in the body and it makes sense that it reflects our overall state of health, so treatments that address oxidative stress in the body and skin at the same time have understandably been in the spotlight. Popular new treatment trends – see VitraLift© and Vit It - combine bespoke intravenous nutritional infusions with advanced skin rejuvenation treatments in a single session. Your skin doctor or nurse is now very likely to include nutritional advice into your skin regimen, with particular emphasis on vitamin D levels at this time of year. New testing kits that can be used at home allow clinics to analyse your nutritional status and recommend supplementation based on your results.

ndividuals with obesity are more at risk for testing positive for Covid-19 (>46%), as well as 113% more likely to be hospitalised, mortality is also 48% higher for those who are overweight / obese (Popkin et al.,2020). Medical research tells us that obesity associated inflammation plays a large part in Covid progression. We at RRMG use a personalised approach to target and prevent obesity related Covid risk. Immune dysfunction, weight gain and obesity are both causes and consequences of metabolic dysfunction - how we transport, use and store energy / nutrients in the body. Whilst losing weight can sometimes feel like a long road, reversing metabolic dysfunction and reducing inflammation can happen fairly quickly if guided correctly – meaning you can protect yourself quickly as you lose weight over time. How a VIRTUAL bathroom design can become your own bathroom REALITY…

I

n recent years, the process of selecting and installing a new bathroom has become much less daunting a task for the consumer. There have been numerous developments in bathroom design software which have enabled the Bathe & Beyond bathroom showroom to accurately create a rendition of the proposed scheme for the consumer to become familiar with, easily make amendments to, and confirm that they are happy with, prior to ordering and installation. Where once drawings and sketches were the norm, 3D imagery has become the standard. This has enormous visual advantage, of that there is no doubt, but often the client has difficulty with the lengthy verbal explanations that go with the design in front of them. Bathe & Beyond has gone one step further, introducing a 4D bathroom design immersive experience where consumers can gain confidence in their choices by really “feeling” the new bathroom before their purchase, and the sense of getting lost during the verbal explanation of the 3D version is eradicated. Commonly, people have issues with spatial awareness and are therefore not highly tuned in to the issues of spacing between chosen pieces and thus they are not always aware if the bathroom would actually be comfortable to use. It’s the balance between beautiful to look at and comfortable to use that is often not fully achieved. Bathe & Beyond’s 4D experience tackles this issue literally “head on” as, when wearing the futuristic 4D headset to view a design, you are transported into your very own new bathroom and are able to open furniture drawers, stand inside shower enclosures, reach for taps and so forth. Instead of looking from the outside in to your design, you are

in the design. The advantages to both client and Bathe & Beyond are various and numerous. Having experienced your new bathroom prior to purchasing it, you are much less likely to suffer what’s known as “buyers’ remorse”. Having tried out the drawers, the lights, the taps etc, viewed different colour combinations and eradicated dislikes from the scheme, you are much more likely to have understood and retained the mass of information that is supplied to your during the selection process. It’s a quick and easy process to substitute pieces, move things around, and judge what benefits and drawbacks those changes bring. Silly mistakes are eradicated, customer confidence is increased, and the bathroom designer can be assured that a correct interpretation of the customer’s brief has been produced. Try your new bathroom before you buy!

FOXBURY– REVISTED Richard Barnes, Founder of Catling Group talks about their recent revisit to a complicated build in Woldingham, Surrey.

B

ack In 2014 (when life was somewhat normal) we attended a meeting with a private client who had achieved planning consent for a site on the Ridge in Woldingham, living nearby this was extremely attractive to us plus of course we would have the added benefit of working in a beautiful area in which we had not worked before. The specification of the property was to be high end with bespoke kitchen and furniture, cinema room, gym, steam room and all the other niceties that a property of this level should have, nothing could be simpler! Just as the meeting was drawing to a close the client asked if he had mentioned that all of this has to be achieved without demolishing the existing property, on time, on budget and without causing any nuisance to the adjoining properties! Aha! At this point we realised that a challenge lay ahead! The build started in November and right from the commencement we were lucky with the weather given Woldingham’s microclimate! (We would go on to battle wind rain and snow). Planning regulations meant that the existing property had to be kept and would become encased within the new house. This lead to having to underpin the entire building leaving sufficient new foundations protruding to take the new brickwork wrap. New openings had to be formed and all tied back to the walls along with inserting insulation and complying with the structural engineers requirements. The methods for completing such a build are complex due to the sequence and the importance of safety and integrity of the building at all times.

We completed at the end of April 2016 including , the external works to drive way and landscaping the grounds, again no mean feat as it was previously a goat farm and totals almost 6 acres. Every aspect of this project ran to budget and on time, without doubt as with anything in life it was a challenge and somewhat of a learning curve and with that in mind has helped to shape our business today. We revisited the client last month following relaxation of lockdown for a coffee and a chat, the property is still looking beautiful and as sharp as when we left although there is a new bull terrier shaped addition. The clients were a joy to work for and enjoyed the project and its so nice to think that we are in touch even after this time, as we are with many of our previous clients. We asked if they were happy to give a few words about their experience… “ In my opinion the relationship between a client and their Project management company is even more important than that with its architect or any other part of the construction team. When choosing who I would work with the key elements for me were honesty, integrity and trust. Catling exceeded my expectations in all of these areas and made to a “layman” the process of building construction both interesting and stress free, in addition to that they were extremely nice people to work with.” Should you have a “project” in mind we would be delighted to assist you in progressing to each stage from initial concept to completion. hen we are thinking of the most important factor in choosing furniture, storage has got importance. Wardrobes have an upper hand when it comes to storage options. Wooden wardrobes have always been the favourites of people for decades. We can’t see a household without wooden furniture as most people like the comfort it provides. 9 8 NO V E M B E R 2 0 2 0

What are the advantages of wooden wardrobes? Wood is one of the sturdiest materials one can have for their wardrobes. Despite its strength, the wooden wardrobes are sold at an affordable price. Along with wooden wardrobes are strong enough as they can be used for many years. If you care for your furniture then you will be able to enjoy your wooden wardrobes for a long time. Look and feel: Wooden furniture can also go a long way to creating a sense of the natural world indoors. If you live in a high-density apartment block in a city, you may wish to foster a sense of nature in your living space. Wood is the perfect way to achieve this, through both its wide-ranging colour spectrum and the fascinating patterns of grains and fibres. Wood can also immediately bring warmth to otherwise sterile surroundings. Easy Maintenance: Although completely weather-resistant, wooden wardrobes are quite easy to maintain. They can be gently wiped with

a soft wet cloth to remove dust and dirt from the surfaces and abyss of the wardrobe. Also, to want the long-life of these beautiful furniture units, keep it away from the direct sunlight in the bedroom because they might degrade the finish of these pieces. Versatility: When compared to other materials wood is certainly versatile. No matter whether the design is modern or contemporary wood could certainly create an impact on that. They could be easily customised and derived just according to your bespoke needs Eco Friendly: Wood is the best example of an eco-friendly wardrobe. They are 100% safe and do not have any harmful effects at all.
