The new Comitti BREVA 35 Motorboat
E
makes its debut in the UK this Autumn
ntrepreneur & philanthropist Dr Karen Dickens is launching her new company and dealership Comitti Boats UK & Caribbean this Autumn. The company will be debuting the next generation of Comitti boats the BREVA 35 in the UK while promoting all four Comitti model families that encapsulate ‘Not only a boat, a lifestyle’ VENEZIA - BREVA - ISOLA - DI LEGNO. “Comitti is a small company in northern Italy and one of the few remaining Italian shipyards with a tradition of building classically designed Italian motor boats,” explains Karen. “It was through my initial purchase and semi-bespoke design of a VENEZIA 34 - ‘Octopussy’ and then building my new Comitti BREVA 35 - ‘Property of a Lady’ that I realised I wanted to be directly involved in expanding the reach of Comitti into new markets. I’m also planning to launch a new luxury boat charter business in 2021 featuring a selection of beautiful Comitti boats.”
“With 15 different models in the fleet, Comitti is the perfect brand to satisfy connoisseurs” Bringing these iconic Italian motor boats to a much wider audience, across multiple markets and geographies is Karen’s aim. With 15 different models in the fleet, Comitti is the perfect brand to satisfy connoisseurs - from day cruisers and pleasure seekers, to Superyacht tenders and those looking for commercial and resort business use. The latest model family is BREVA, offering a contemporary evolution of a classical Italian design that remains timeless and ignores styling trends, available in 35ft or 29ft with a 42ft and 26ft currently in development. The classical VENEZIA range offers an iconic design in five different lengths (34ft, 31ft, 28ft, 25ft and 22ft) each in four different levels of finish: Elegance, Classic Teak, Classic Mahogany and Sport. The ISOLA family currently available in 33ft with other sizes planned for the future, focuses on an open bow layout & central helm station allowing for full walk-around access to forward 1 2 NO V E M B E R 2 0 2 0
and aft dining/sunbathing areas. Specified with either outboards or sterndrives, a fixed stainless steel Bimini makes her an ideal family day boat or when specified with British diesel outboards by COX Power she becomes an incredibly elegant and versatile tender/chase boat. The DI LEGNO models - PORTOFINO and SANREMO - embody the company’s heritage of fine craftsmanship using traditional materials while maintaining that bygone golden era of 1960’s Italian wooden boat design. Prices range from £120,000 to £425,000 (+VAT and taxes), and the team offer a personal service from start to finish, and throughout ownership. The semi-bespoke design features and choices available are particularly personal to Karen who has sought out external design specialists that offer the same quality, craftmanship and attention to detail that the boats offer themselves. Karen uses all these specialists herself so can attest to their quality. Karen is also passionate about the charities she supports both directly and through the company. One per cent of all UK sales will go to the Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust (cornwallairambulancetrust.org) as well as supporting the charity’s soon to be launched 12 Days of Christmas Challenge to raise much needed funds. In the Caribbean, the team will be supporting the Barbados children’s charity naturesfunranch.org.

St Albans Museums receives lifeline grant from Government’s £1.57bn Culture Recovery Fund

St Albans Museums is one of 1,385 cultural and creative organisations across the country receiving urgently needed support. £257 million of investment was announced as part of the very first round of the Culture Recovery Fund grants programme being administered by Arts Council England. his fund comes at a crucial time for St Albans Museums. After months of closure, both museums were able to safely reopen with new COVID-secure measures in August and September. Since then, the service has continued to adapt to changes in restrictions whilst also providing a welcoming experience for returning visitors. This fund will allow the museums to recover from the negative financial impact of lockdown and begin rebuilding its programme. The fund will mean that the service can continue providing residents and visitors with thought-provoking exhibitions, displays and installations across both physical and digital platforms. Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said: “This funding is a vital boost for the theatres, music venues, museums and cultural organisations that form the soul of our nation. It will protect these special places, save jobs and help the culture sector’s recovery. “These places and projects are cultural beacons the length and breadth of the country. This unprecedented investment in the arts is proof this government is here for culture, with further support to come in the days and weeks ahead so
that the culture sector can bounce back strongly.” Chair, Arts Council England, Sir Nicholas Serota, said: “Theatres, museums, galleries, dance companies and music venues bring joy to people and life to our cities, towns and villages. This life-changing funding will save thousands of cultural spaces loved by local communities and international audiences. Further funding is still to be announced and we are working hard to support our sector during these challenging times.” Councillor Anthony Rowlands, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Heritage and Public Realm from St Albans City and District Council (who own the museums), said: “The pandemic has had a significant impact on the museum service. I am grateful to the staff who worked very hard to reopen the museums in the summer. However, the continuing financial implications of closure and ongoing restrictions are not to be underestimated. The Council is thankful for this grant from Arts Council England which will help future proof the service. This fund will ensure that the community continues to have access to our great history and art as we weather this pandemic together.” stalbansmuseums.org.uk

Introducing Linden Leaf
L
inden Leaf is a new distillery in Cambridge that has only been selling spirits for just over a year but has already picked up a huge range of top awards. Founded by three Cambridge scientists and engineers who share a passion for food and drink, they make organic spirits which are crafted and tuned at the molecular level.
1 8 NO V E M B E R 2 0 2 0
Applying their scientific backgrounds, they use a clever piece of kit called GC-MS to analyse botanicals and work out exactly what molecules make each taste and smell. They then use a special chilled extraction method to pull exactly the molecules they want from each botanical. Combined with their passion for ingredients and flavour, they’ve discovered some amazing flavours.
Above: A bottle of Linden Leaf ’s prize-winning 88 Organic Molecular gin in their cocktail test kitchen. Opposite, clockwise from top: Some of the amazing botanicals that Linden Leaf uses to make their spirits; Mukund and Paul, two of the founders of Linden Leaf, working in the laboratory on amazing new flavours; Linden Leaf ’s new sustainable Cocktail Elements garnishes.
THE DETAILS Linden Leaf ’s spirits are available from their own website lindenleaf.co.uk where you can use the discount code WINTER2020 to get free shipping until 31 January 2021. They are also available through leading online retailers including Twisted Cellar: twistedcellar.co.uk Hipflask: hipflask.shop “We hunt locally and globally for the best conventional spices, herbs and fruit: from dried juniper berries to fresh Buddha’s hand lemons. We also try just about anything else we can think of. How about oak moss? Walnut husks? Seaweed? Sprouting potatoes?” says Dr Matthew Webster, one of the three founders. “All of our products meet the stringent requirements for organic certification by the Soil Association. We believe in supporting organic farmers and producers: not only because of their ideals but also because they often make the highest quality produce.” Their spirits have won top prizes across the board this year, including prestigious gold awards in the major London, Tokyo and San Francisco competitions. Away from pure drinks competitions, they received two of the coveted, three star awards in the Great Taste Awards this year. Their 88 gin uses 28 different botanicals, giving a layered perfume and an immensely long flavour profile: heady high notes of lemon zest and blossoms, through middle notes of pine and juniper and finally a warm, rich base of berries and citrus peppers, with hints of winter spice. Even their Singularity vodka is special, with a clean flavour and smooth silky mouthfeel. “We studied how alcohol and water interact at a molecular level. Carefully-selected organic alcohol is blended with a unique mineral water using an exacting method to produce Singularity. The smoothest vodka known to science? We think so.” says Matthew. This summer, they introduced a new, sustainable
range of garnishes, called Cocktail Elements – initially in Lemon, Lime and Orange but with many more in the works. These are are organic sprays made with only two ingredients: the freshest produce and carefully-selected organic alcohol. They deliver a hyper-concentrated burst of flavour and fragrance to cocktails. These were initially introduced to help bars reduce wastage while delivering the best in peak season garnish flavour throughout the year. “Our production techniques extract every drop of scent and flavour from each fruit. For example, just 3 lemons can produce a spray that can garnish over 80 drinks.” explains Matthew. “Try a spritz of lemon on an ice-cold dry Martini. Perhaps some lime on your favourite G&T? How about a spray of orange on a perfectly- balanced Old Fashioned, or topping off an unforgettable Aperol spritz?” It’s great to see a small company applying technology and new approached to make such tasty products.

ST COLUMBA’S COLLEGE
S
t Columba’s College is an independent Catholic day school for ages 4 to 18 in the heart of St Albans. We welcome families of all faiths and none. From 2021, we will welcome girls for the first time into the Lower Prep (Reception, Year 1 and Year 2) and Lower Sixth (Year 12). This will be followed by a phased transition to full coeducation throughout the school. At St Columba’s College, we pride ourselves on providing an education of the head and heart, placing happiness and confidence at the centre of our mission. For most of our pupils, their educational journey starts in our Prep School then continues into our Senior School at age 11 before entering our Sixth Form at 16. We also welcome applications from external candidates for entry into the Senior School at 11+, 13+ and Sixth Form. Headmaster Mr David Buxton says: “Throughout each phase of education, we create a nurturing environment where each pupil is challenged to achieve their own best academic standard, while becoming confident, resilient and compassionate individuals. “We strive for academic excellence while aspiring to be very much more than simply an academic hot house. We foster a love of learning and a sense of personal, moral, social and cultural education.” Our pupils are supported by a dedicated academic and support staff, and they become members of a strong and vibrant community of alumni, parents and staff, where lifelong friendships are established. This year our remote learning programme has been a great success with parents and pupils. Our dedicated staff utilised a range of resources to deliver interactive and engaging lessons, following the normal timetables, and we continued our provision of strong pastoral support. We hope that you share our vision. We warmly invite you to visit St Columba’s to meet our staff and pupils and to experience our community firsthand. The closing date for external applications for entry to St Columba’s College at 11+ and 13+ is 27 November, and for Sixth Form it is 14 December. Do get in touch with us. We’d love to meet you in person for a private visit or a video chat. stcolumbascollege.org

PERSONALISED LEARNING: EMPOWERING THE INDIVIDUAL
Jo Cameron, Principal of Queenswood School in Brookmans Park, is passionate about educating the individual child.
A
t the heart of a truly bespoke education is a recognition that each pupil develops at their own pace, and in their own learning style. While kinaesthetic learners favour practical, hands-on experience, for instance, auditory-musical learners benefit from mnemonics, rhythms and background sounds. Increasingly, independent schools are working to differentiate their teaching methods to suit individual learners. Here at Queenswood, we have recently established a Personalised Learning Centre – a central hub where all learners can congregate. Our Academic Scholars, and pupils with additional learning needs, are all under the same roof, learning from each other and learning together. Scholars meet there for one-to-one and group sessions, to explore options for stretch and challenge and to discuss current affairs. Other pupils use it as a drop-in centre to seek advice on planning study and revision schedules, to play flashcard games to boost working memory, to discuss recommendations for non-fiction reading with staff and peers, or for structured tutorials to address specific learning issues. Strong links between a school’s pastoral teams and the academic staff are crucial in order to 3 8 NO V E M B E R 2 0 2 0
build up a holistic picture of each pupil’s needs, and to ensure that staff can work together to deliver whatever is required. At Queenswood, our Personalised Learning staff provide support in three waves. Firstly, they train teachers: a regular half-termly programme ensures that academic staff are up-to-date with the latest pedagogical research into specific learning issues, study skills and time management. Secondly, they provide in-class support, visiting lessons to help teachers to deliver the curriculum to a particular pupil or group of pupils. Thirdly, they are able to offer oneto-one or group tutorials within the Personalised Learning Centre itself. More than ever in the current pandemic situation, with a proportion of our pupils learning remotely via video conferencing software and collaborative online documents, we are fully committed to this bespoke provision. We recognise that every pupil deserves to be recognised as an individual. A personalised approach to learning ensures that teachers respond and react to the needs of each child, nurturing their unique potential, fostering independence, and allowing them to discover their own strengths and passions in a safe, supportive environment. queenswood.org

Preparing Pupils Mentally and Physically for Exams and Careers By Lara Péchard, Head at St Margaret’s School, Bushey
N
o one can argue that sixth form students across the country are facing an extraordinary situation right now as the countdown begins for exams in 2021. Questions and worries stem from the fallout of this summer, whether exams will actually take place next year and what the method of assessment might be? For the longer term, students are also anxious about what university will look like for them and what career opportunities will be at the end of this whole crisis? Life has not been easy for sixth form students and next academic year is no different (except we have great insight into what could go wrong again) and now we have the added pressure of reports suggesting that young people will be the biggest hit by the growing unemployment rise, it’s no wonder that mental health and general wellbeing is suffering right now. What schools can do is to start looking to create a robust evidence trail of all assessments and A-level grades in a way that is understood by everyone. We should be prepared to answer questions, offering some form of clarity and instilling confidence in our young people at a time when they need it most. Schools must also support the theory that ‘your best is good enough’ and that any future assessment of the work completed will need to take a holistic approach over the duration of study. Clear and open communication will be required in order to best allay concerns but also to avoid any tension. Being very clear about how different grades might work will be key if we do end up using Centre Assessed Grades (CAG) again. Interestingly, universities and UCAS are operating on the usual deadlines and it has been reassuring to hear there are plentiful 2021 places available. Schools will also need to be prepared for Year 13 students to over-worry about whether their teachers have adequate evidence of their potential and how they are collecting that evidence; there is so much to contend with. Many schools have responded by offering wellbeing sessions, tips on how to deal with anxiety, support with university applications, careers advice, video sessions on mindfulness or yoga and more.

Sharing stories of how recent leavers are finding different pathways during this time should excite students. Whilst plenty of recent leavers have headed off to university in the last few weeks, there are also plenty of great gap year opportunities taking place. Schools don’t have a crystal ball, we cannot see into the future and so discussion around the economy and careers advice for the future is a learning curve for all, but we have to have these conversations openly and honestly, talk to students about how they are feeling and how this pandemic is impacting them right now. They will have questions about their future and we should be prepared to jump on board that potential ‘rollercoaster’ with them. stmargaretsbushey.co.uk

IT’S GOOD TO TALK M
any people suggest that you shouldn’t try and change your partner, but my experience after thousands of hours facilitating such movement to improve relationships suggests that change is inevitable and desirable in most cases, even if in a small way. How and when to try for change are the big questions. There are three elements to a partnership, one partner, the other partner and the relationship. Respect all three components. Communication is the key. Ask open questions and listen deeply and empathically while putting your frame of reference to one side. Stop and carefully consider what you are about to say and be considerate to your partner when you say it. “When you do that it shows how stupid you are.” Could become… “I feel that sometimes when things get heated the reason might dissolve.” Or “You know last Tuesday when you did ‘xyz’, well I’ve been thinking about that… it made me feel as if we belong together… really close.” Compromise doesn’t necessarily mean you comply habitually, be congruent and retain your autonomous viewpoint. Discuss don’t argue, slow everything down and stick to the point. No raised voices or swearing, remember you are both rational

adults not immature children. Be self-aware and aware of your partner. Find out by asking open questions regarding what the other person loves, likes and dislikes about you. This sounds obvious, but couples often find it very difficult to open up this discussion. Recognise small idiosyncratic foibles about your partner that may annoy you and those about yourself that may annoy them. Become acceptant of these and even work towards them becoming endearing facets of their personality not irritants. Every morning and every evening ask how they feel, about how their day might be and how it has been. Listen deeply, understand the content and then with that understanding in mind ask how happenings in their day made them feel. Empathy can bring a richer, warmer relationship between two people.

Aktaie Jewellery T
he idea behind Aktaie, the new British jewellery brand, was born during long beach walks with the dog along the shores of the North Sea in Norfolk. Fluidity of the waves, their movement and cleanliness of lines inspired many of Aktaie designs. The waves would often bring beautiful stones such as quartz and carnelian that were
5 8 NO V E M B E R 2 0 2 0
tumbled by the ocean over many years making them smooth and rounded. There was such beauty in those natural stones and their flawed shapes that it gave the inspiration for jewellery that is simple, where nothing detracts from the beauty of the gems, jewellery that is perfectly imperfect. Name Aktaie was not chosen by chance. Being one of the fifty Neireids, Aktaie is the Greek goddess of the seashore, it seemed like Aktaie herself gifted the idea that has inspired the creation of the brand. Gemstones are faceted freehand and there is great beauty in slight imperfections and variations in colour, because just like it is in nature – nothing is ever absolutely perfect. Each design is completely unique and all pieces are created by hand with great passion in a small studio in Norfolk by the designer and founder, Ksenia. A DECADE OF CANINE COMFORT WITH CHARLEY CHAU
uxury dog bedding specialist Charley Chau is celebrating its tenth birthday. From a quirky little hobby sewing dog beds on the sitting room floor to happy customers in over sixty countries around the world – this is the story of how a love of dogs and a passion for interior design led to the creation of an award-winning, family-run British business. Charley Chau was founded ‘by accident’ after endless frustrating searches for a dog bed that was both comfortable and stylish. Prompted by yet another disastrous dog bed purchase that went lumpy after one wash sisters Christine and Jenny Chau sat on the sitting room floor one afternoon and hand-stitch two Snuggle Beds for Christine’s Italian Greyhounds, Charley and Anna. The dogs absolutely loved the Snuggle Beds and after posting photos on Facebook, Christine was inundated by friends asking her to make beds for their dogs. And so, in August 2010, Charley Chau

was born – no shiny business plan, no plan at all in fact, just a passion for creating dog beds that were super-cosy, stylish and practical. Charley Chau was meant to be a quirky little hobby but in 2012, the sisters found that their small business had taken on a life of its own and it was no longer possible to fit it in around their jobs in the City. It was decision time – close down or give up their successful City careers. Charley Chau won and the sisters have never looked back. Sadly, Charley left this world suddenly and unexpectedly in 2019 but, as the company that bears his name enters its second decade, he leaves a brilliant legacy. From humble beginnings on the sitting room floor, Charley Chau’s customers range from ordinary dog folk to baronesses and billionaires across the globe, all with one thing in common – they want the absolute best for their dogs! Essentially the Esse Ironheart cooking stove makes the most of the two things Esse does best – an inspired combination of a superb log burning stove and a traditional cast iron range cooker. The Esse Ironheart solid fuel cooker was launched in 2004 to celebrate 150 years of ESSE Cookers and Stoves by embodying the quintessential features of both product types and remains a best seller. The Esse Ironheart is the stove designed for cooking and when River Cottage wanted a stove, this was a natural choice. The Esse Ironheart wood burner has a firebox that has been specifically designed to burn 500mm logs lengthways, which it does in a spectacular fashion providing a splendid view of the flames through a large rectangular glass fire door. As the heat source for the oven and hotplates, the Esse Ironheart is highly controllable, thanks to simple but effective primary and secondary air

flow controls. The secondary control provides an airwash which keeps the door glass clear. The compact Dartmoor Baker 5 (5kw nominal output) has a good size oven and three shelf heights. The Dartmoor Baker’s have oven vents which allow the cooking smells and condensation to be drawn out of the oven and up the chimney. If you would like to use the top of the stove to warm a pan or boil a kettle then the use of the back flue outlet is recommended when installing the stove. This penguin is the love child of the Penguin 8 and the Hungry Penguin. What doesn’t it have? It gives you heat, it gives you food, it gives you hot drinks, it has somewhere to store your logs and it’s got a glorious big window to watch your fire burning. When the world disappoints you, it will be waiting for you at home. This penguin will work for it’s living: it can multi task, it’s strong, it’s hot, it’s got muscle and it cooks. If you love this penguin it will love you back. The “88” is an 8kW stove with an oven box on the top and an integral plinth underneath. There are convection panels on both sides. There is an optional stainless steel top plate. There is a model available without the plinth: the “88 Shorty”. Whatever you are looking for we have it covered. ludlowstoves.co.uk

Timeless elegance of sash windows
A
sash window or hung sash window is made of one or more movable panels or “sashes” that form a frame to hold panes of glass, which are often separated from other panes (or “lights”) by narrow muntins. Although any window with this style of glazing is technically “a sash”, the term is used almost exclusively to refer to windows where the glazed panels are opened by sliding vertically, or horizontally in a style known as a “Yorkshire light”, sliding sash, or sash and case (so called because the weights are concealed in a box case). The oldest surviving examples of sash windows were installed in England in the 1670s, for example at Ham House. The invention of the sash window is sometimes credited, without conclusive evidence, to Robert Hooke. The sash window is often found in Georgian and Victorian houses, and the classic arrangement has three panes across by two up on each of two sashes, giving a “six over six” panel window, although this is by no means a fixed rule. Innumerable late Victorian and Edwardian suburban houses were built in England using standard sash window units approximately 4 feet (1.2 m) in width, but older, hand-made units could be of any size. To facilitate operation, the weight of the glazed panel is usually balanced by a heavy steel, lead, or cast iron sash weight or counter-weight concealed within the window frame. The sash weight is connected to the window by a sash cord or chain that runs over a pulley at the top of the frame, although spring balances are sometimes used. Sash windows may be fitted with simplex hinges, which allow the window to be locked into hinges on one side while the counterbalance on the other side is detached, allowing the window to be opened for escape or cleaning. 8 2 NO V E M B E R 2 0 2 0
The name “hung sash window” is more usual in the United States, and typically refers to a doublehung window with two sashes that can move up and down in the window frame. A single hung window has two sashes but normally the top sash is fixed and only the bottom sash slides. Triple and quadruple hung windows are used for tall openings, common in New England churches. Construction is usually of softwood, and these sashes were traditionally only single-glazed. Modern double-glazed sash windows are now available, which increase energy efficiency and reduce sound ingress whilst keeping the traditional look of a period property. Traditionally styled double-glazed sash windows will often attempt to mimic the original appearance through the use of non-functional muntins or ‘glazing bars’, which are applied to the surface of the glazing, and give the appearance that the sash is made up of several smaller panes, whereas in reality, each sash consists of only one, large, double glazed unit. Sash windows are relatively low maintenance and offer huge advantages in return (style, aesthetics, abides by laws (relating to older houses and buildings), natural resources etc.), however well-maintained sash windows should last generations without needing parts replaced. It is also possible to clean all the glass from within the building by sliding the two panes to different positions. A significant advantage of sash windows is that they provide efficient cooling of interiors during warm weather. Opening both the top and bottom of a sash window by equal amounts allows warm air at the top of the room to escape, thus drawing relatively cool air from outside into the room through the bottom opening.

Tye Architects : Case study
S
ettled in the open countryside in Buckinghamshire this house is nestled in a secluded rural location, reflecting its surroundings of mature woodland. The setting and elegant simplicity were paramount to the design of this house. The brief was to provide a dwelling which responds to its context in materiality. A simple palette of carefully selected materials includes the use of stone from the earth on the lower level and timber on the floating box of the upper level, enhanced by a green tinted series of panels to provide transparency and reflect the surrounding plot-scape. With clean geometric lines, the floating first floor cantilevers and balances on the ground floor, providing long reaching views from the master bedroom and several short distance views of the plot from the other bedrooms. This architectural element pulls you into the site and allows you to marvel at its geometry and weightlessness. The lower floor is grounded by the strong stone element; the roofing detail of the first floor floats, gliding with the frameless glazing. Approaching the house, the glass enhances the large open spaces. The open plan ground floor connects from the front entrance area through to the rear garden and a horizontal expanse of glazing connects the rear living spaces to the garden-scape to the rear. Vertical electronically controlled louvres to the windows provide solar shading and privacy shading

to the bedrooms. Wooden sliding door panels, some recessed and hidden in the walls allow for areas to be discretely closed off. The house is fully equipped with a home cinema room and an outdoor amphitheatre. A sunroom in the garden provides an area for outdoor living where you can sit outside in a sheltered area at different times of the day and enjoy the views of the house and the landscaped garden. This project is energy efficient and environmentally friendly with ground source heat pumps providing the heating and hot water. To further reduce the carbon footprint, the house is also equipped with solar panels and low energy lighting. This dwelling was designed to create an elegant, contemporary family home with an open plan layout that is an environmentally sustainable, contextually relevant and timeless concept. tyearchitects.com

First impressions
The different types of front doors
T
he front door can make or break how good your property looks from the outside. People look at a front door before they look at anything else – it reflects what you and others think about the house. A front door must be in keeping with your property planked doors work well on barn or warehouse conversions. But there is no escaping the universal charm of the Georgian front door - solid, well-constructed, but at the same time curiously domestic and welcoming. The classic Georgian combination of solid, panelled door with a glazed fanlight over the top, is just magic.
9 6 NO V E M B E R 2 0 2 0
There are three main types. Firstly you can opt for solid wood. These are built to last, but they do require some upkeep. You’ll need to sand them down and repaint periodically to stop the wood from rotting. And you can change the colour of the door whenever you want. Secondly you can get a uPVC front door. These tend to be a lot cheaper, easy to clean and only need the odd wash and dry to rinse off dirt and dust. And finally you could opt for a composite front door. As the name suggests, they are made from a variety of different materials. The best material is chosen for each part of the door,
providing the best overall performance as a result. Door knobs, knockers and letterboxes should be in keeping with one another and sympathetic to the style of the door. Simple brass ring knockers and “Doctor’s” door knockers are two styles that suit both panelled and plank doors. Lionhead knockers and knobs with ornate embellishment are typical of the Queen Anne period while reeded (ridged) door furniture was used in late Georgian and early Victorian times. Edwardian door furniture is plain, with simple reeding, while Victorian is slightly heavier.
“Security is an important element of any front door. Ideally choose one that offers multipoint locks and have a split spindle design”
Focusing on security Security is an important element of any front door. Ideally choose one that offers multipoint locks and have a split spindle design. This means when you close the door from the outside, the only way of getting back in is to use a key. Multipoint locks should have bolts that move into place by an upward turn of the handle from inside or outside your home. You then use a key to keep in place. In some cases compression bolts are provided in the door, to further secure it into the frame. Clearly the more bolts you have the more secure it will be.
