Answer Your Call to Rewild

frica’s intoxicating allure has drawn adventure-seekers to its warm soil for centuries. Its charm is enchanting, its people captivating, and its bounty of open space and wildlife the antithesis of city living. Holidays to the sunny southern hemisphere can be about balmy beaches with colourful reefs and coconuts, or deep jungle treks to the territory of the Great Apes. It’s knowing where to go and what to expect that will turn your African travel reverie into a reality. Brett Horley Safaris has an innate understanding that only comes from a lifelong exploration of our Motherland. It gives us the know-how to decipher your dream journey and let Africa exceed your expectations. We fuse an intrinsic passion for the natural world with our ability to connect with people; a combination that allows us to design journeys perfectly suited to you, our clients. Our process incorporates your personal preferences and travel concepts and we apply our first-hand knowledge of destinations, routes, locations, and seasons. The result is a personalised holiday itinerary that leads with authenticity and understanding. What drives us is our deep-seated desire to share Africa’s majesty with those who seek it. We’ve seen 22 NOVEMBER 2020

how a safari adventure can turn into an experience that will never leave your heart, so our top priority is to make that happen for you. Some travellers dream of chasing rare and unusual creatures in far off places, while others imagine watching quietly from the sun deck of a luxury suite while animals wander and roam within view. Africa offers incredible variety, from superlative accommodation to raw and rustic wilderness retreats. We can appreciate the desire to connect with your roots, to become invisible in the animal world and to rediscover your significance on this planet. We, too, believe in the value of champagne on ice, bathtubs under the stars, and beds strewn with rose petals. Africa has it all. You just need to know where to look, and we do. 2020 Has delivered a new normal for the world of travel and it’s a fast-changing environment – one which we make it our business to know inside and out. Now more than ever, a call to rewild and reset echoes across the globe; a call we are destined to answer. The impact of the pandemic on Family Law Media Predictions There has been much discussion in the media about the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, and associated restrictions, on our private lives and particularly in relation to marriage breakdown and divorce. This was spurred on by early reports from China that “dozens of cities reported a surge in divorce filings since March, when marriage registration agencies returned to work” (Financial Times, April 2020) and more recent headlines such as “Divorce boom forecast as lockdown sees advice queries rise” (BBC, September 2020). The ongoing uncertainty that we are learning to live with is likely to have had an impact on the initiation of divorce proceedings. It is understandable that many individuals would not have chosen to issue a divorce petition during lockdown, when there would be little escape or distraction from one’s spouse, but that the very being in lockdown might have placed a huge strain on relationships – amplifying any problems that previously existed. It is now possible to review some statistics to try to understand the impact that the pandemic has had on family breakdown in the UK.

During Lockdown The Ministry of Justice reported that the number of divorce petitions filed from April to June was down 18% on the equivalent quarter in 2019. This correlates with the interpretation that people were less inclined to begin divorce proceedings during lockdown. The stats for the latest quarter, July to September 2020, have not yet been released but many practitioners believe that they could reflect higher numbers than previous years, tallying with media reports. There were also concerns reported in the media that domestic violence would increase during lockdown. It is with sadness that this does appear to be true and the Ministry of Justice reports that the number of domestic violence remedy order applications, from April to June, increased by 24% compared to the same quarter in 2019.

The Changing Picture Citizens Advice has been tracking the number of visitors to their page “Getting a divorce” over 24 NOVEMBER 2020

the last eight months and on the first weekend in September, its advice webpage views were 25% higher than the same weekend in 2019. The number of weekly views had dropped to a low of 3,000 views in late March and then rose to a peak of almost 14,000 weekly views in August, as lockdown restrictions eased. This could indicate that the media predictions have been correct and that we will see an upturn in the number of new divorce cases. It is too soon to understand the full impact that the pandemic has had, but the latest Ministry of Justice report may paint a clearer picture.

The new Comitti BREVA 35 Motorboat

E

makes its debut in the UK this Autumn

ntrepreneur & philanthropist Dr Karen Dickens is launching her new company and dealership Comitti Boats UK & Caribbean this Autumn. The company will be debuting the next generation of Comitti boats the BREVA 35 in the UK while promoting all four Comitti model families that encapsulate ‘Not only a boat, a lifestyle’ VENEZIA - BREVA - ISOLA - DI LEGNO. “Comitti is a small company in northern Italy and one of the few remaining Italian shipyards with a tradition of building classically designed Italian motor boats,” explains Karen. “It was through my initial purchase and semi-bespoke design of a VENEZIA 34 - ‘Octopussy’ and then building my new Comitti BREVA 35 - ‘Property of a Lady’ that I realised I wanted to be directly involved in expanding the reach of Comitti into new markets. I’m also planning to launch a new luxury boat charter business in 2021 featuring a selection of beautiful Comitti boats.”

“With 15 different models in the fleet, Comitti is the perfect brand to satisfy connoisseurs” Bringing these iconic Italian motor boats to a much wider audience, across multiple markets and geographies is Karen’s aim. With 15 different models in the fleet, Comitti is the perfect brand to satisfy connoisseurs - from day cruisers and pleasure seekers, to Superyacht tenders and those looking for commercial and resort business use. The latest model family is BREVA, offering a contemporary evolution of a classical Italian design that remains timeless and ignores styling trends, available in 35ft or 29ft with a 42ft and 26ft currently in development. The classical VENEZIA range offers an iconic design in five different lengths (34ft, 31ft, 28ft, 25ft and 22ft) each in four different levels of finish: Elegance, Classic Teak, Classic Mahogany and Sport. The ISOLA family currently available in 33ft with other sizes planned for the future, focuses on an open bow layout & central helm station allowing for full walk-around access to forward 26 NOVEMBER 2020

and aft dining/sunbathing areas. Specified with either outboards or sterndrives, a fixed stainless steel Bimini makes her an ideal family day boat or when specified with British diesel outboards by COX Power she becomes an incredibly elegant and versatile tender/chase boat. The DI LEGNO models - PORTOFINO and SANREMO - embody the company’s heritage of fine craftsmanship using traditional materials while maintaining that bygone golden era of 1960’s Italian wooden boat design. Prices range from £120,000 to £425,000 (+VAT and taxes), and the team offer a personal service from start to finish, and throughout ownership. The semi-bespoke design features and choices available are particularly personal to Karen who has sought out external design specialists that offer the same quality, craftmanship and attention to detail that the boats offer themselves. Karen uses all these specialists herself so can attest to their quality. Karen is also passionate about the charities she supports both directly and through the company. One per cent of all UK sales will go to the Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust (cornwallairambulancetrust.org) as well as supporting the charity’s soon to be launched 12 Days of Christmas Challenge to raise much needed funds. In the Caribbean, the team will be supporting the Barbados children’s charity naturesfunranch.org.

Splitting the holidays with your former partner this year?

C

hristmas is a joyful time for many, spent with our nearest and dearest and for children whose parents are separated, this can mean dividing their time between two different homes. Sue Andrews, family partner at B P Collins says that if both parents can put their child first and plan ahead to agree what time their children will spend with each parent over the holidays, this should avoid bitter disputes. Otherwise, arguments are likely to have a detrimental effect on the child at a time which should be happy and fun. While there is no standard solution for every separated couple, Sue offers advice on how an amicable agreement can be reached. It is important that separated parents communicate with one another as much as possible, although this can be difficult if separation or divorce has taken place recently, and emotions are still quite raw. Communicating through email is therefore an option – provided each response is measured and not sent when feeling angry. If you do receive a message which upsets you, always take time before responding. Before pressing “send,” stop and think about the words used and how it might be read. It often helps to try to put yourself in the shoes of your former partner, as an email worded in one way might provide momentary satisfaction, do you really want the unpleasantness of vitriolic communications?. Always think about what is best for your child. In my many years as a family lawyer, the best advice a High Court judge gave to parents, who had been locked in an acrimonious battle for years about the arrangements for their children – was to sit down and have a cup of tea together. This may seem obvious, but often difficulties blocking an agreement, arise out of fear or a total misunderstanding, so face to face communication can help overcome that. It will also have the added benefit of the children being able to see their parents talking together, which will enable them to feel more relaxed and comfortable about their parents’ relationship. It is important to start planning as early as possible, as preparations for the festive period can be stressful without this additional issue. If an agreement is reached well in advance, you’ll not have to worry about where your child will be and when. This will also allow enough time to seek legal advice if necessary.

30 NOVEMBER 2020

It’s important that once arrangements have been agreed, both parents should stick to them. Your child will have consistency and stability knowing where they’ll be and also demonstrates that you respect their time with their other parent.

What if you can’t reach an agreement? • A family lawyer will provide advice about what a judge is likely to decide in your circumstances. Also, based upon their experience with other families, a family lawyer will also suggest possibilities you might not have thought about and explore other options to reach an agreement. They can also communicate with the other party on your behalf to help record an agreement in writing. • You could use a mediator, who could help you to facilitate an agreement. Many mediators are still having face to face meetings, however, if further COVID restrictions are imposed, then meetings could take place using a digital platform. • Involving the courts should always be the last resort. But if you are unable to reach an agreement, you can apply to the court to determine arrangements for the children. It’s important to remember that the later the application is lodged, the less likely the court will have capacity to hear the matter before the Christmas holidays. This is another reason to start that conversation as early as possible.

THE DETAILS If you are a separated parent who would like further advice regarding child arrangements, please get in touch with Sue Andrews on sue.andrews@bpcollins.co.uk or call 01753 279046.

OUT & ABOUT

Three most asked financial advice questions…. Unsurprisingly, we at Financial Management find that the same questions crop up over and over again. Here are the top 3 for this month…. If I give money to my children, will they be taxed on it? No - not directly anyway. If you make a gift to children, you will never be in a worse position than if you had not made the gift in the first place. You can give any amount (up to the nil rate band for IHT of £325,000) without triggering any kind of tax charge. Tax implications arise only if the giver dies within seven years from the transaction date. It is vital to understand that should death occur, no tax charge will be incurred by the children nor will they have to return the gift. All that happens is all or part of the gift will be nominally brought back into the estate for the purpose of calculating any inheritance tax liability. An exception to be aware of is gifts from income, where a different set of rules come into play. Should I take tax-free cash from my personal pension? In years gone by, the majority of people reaching retirement age would extract the 25% tax free cash from their private pension. The trend is changing – we would encourage clients to consider the options available to suit their needs: • Take the 25% lump sum if there is a need. E.g.Mortgage repayment, help children join the property ladder, fulfil retirement needs.

• Take the lump sum in a series of chunks as needed. Increasingly popular as no loss of entitlement if not taking the 25% in one go. Balance sits there until you are ready, in a tax efficient environment rather than a bank account delivering poor returns. 32 NOVEMBER 2020

• No lump sum, instead arrange for your monthly pension income to be a blend of taxable income and tax free cash. This results in your pension income being more tax efficient and suits an individual who feels they have built up sufficient lump sum savings elsewhere as they reach retirement. How much life assurance does a family need? Most couples accept that they need enough cover to pay off any outstanding mortgage, however clearly a lot more is needed to provide financial security to a family should the worst happen. Employees might benefit from death-in-service cover, typically expressed as a multiple of income ranging from 2 to 4 times salary, however, to fully protect a family we would suggest a multiple of 10 times income is a more realistic figure. This may sound high however, a lump sum of this size invested and achieving a 5% return would deliver an income of around 50% of the salary pre-death. Considering a single parent’s cost of living should be lower than a couple, this figure is likely to be able to sustain the standard of living With life assurance premiums continuing to reduce based on increased life expectancy and improving medical care, the cost to secure this level of cover may not be as expensive as you might think.

he first-ever made Hermès Birkin bag owned by Jane Birkin and Mulberry handbags worn by Kate Moss and Alexa Chung will join almost 300 standout pieces in the V&A’s next fashion exhibition Bags: Inside Out. The exhibition will be UK’s most comprehensive exhibition dedicated to the ultimate accessory. From designer handbags to despatch boxes, vanity cases to military rucksacks, it will explore our long standing fascination with the bag. Actress and singer Jane Birkin and the former executive chairman of Hermès Jean-Louis Dumas met on a flight from Paris to London. Jane complained that she could not find a bag suitable to carry her belongings and to fit her needs as a young mother. Dumas sketched on an aeroplane sickness-bag a supple rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching. The bag named after Jane, became a sensation appealing to women looking for something spacious and fashionable. The ‘Birkin’ has since become an undeniable symbol of wealth and luxury. The Mulberry Bayswater is one of the brand’s most iconic handbags, as popular today as it was when it launched in 2003. Designed by

Heart of Bucks’ Winter Warmth campaign is raising money to keep vulnerable people warm this winter

I

t has been a difficult year for all of us, but for vulnerable people in Buckinghamshire the colder weather is going to pose an even bigger problem than in previous years. With many out of work, working reduced hours or otherwise struggling financially, heating their home is going to be a challenge. For many, it won’t even be an option.

48 NOVEMBER 2020

The Heart of Bucks Winter Warmth campaign helps vulnerable people across the county who struggle to keep warm in the cold months, including older people, lone parents with children under the age of five and households requiring additional heating because of a household member with a disability. Every year, thousands of eligible individuals receiving a State Pension are paid a ‘Winter Fuel Payment’ by the government. This is an allowance between £100 and £300 to contribute to household heating bills. At this time of year, Heart of Bucks is encouraging people who receive this payment and can afford to pay their heating bills to donate it to help vulnerable people keep warm this winter. Any donation from anyone, however small, can have a big impact on a struggling person or family this winter. The recipients not only receive a one-off grant to help them keep warm, but also receive support, resources and guidance for Heart of Bucks’ Community Advocates. Even the smallest donation can make a big impact – in addition to granting money towards heating bills, donated funds are often spent on warm winter clothing and items to keep warm in the home: something as small as a hot water bottle or a kettle.

HOW TO HELP If you are able to help, you can donate your winter fuel payment, or whatever you can afford, online at www.totalgiving.co.uk/appeal/ winterwarmth. Alternatively, you can send a cheque made payable to ‘Heart of Bucks’ to: Heart of Bucks Winter Warmth, Sunley House (4th floor), Oxford Road, Aylesbury, Bucks, HP19 8FQ.

Tree

Sound 2020 was looking like a busy year for our string quartet which is called ‘Brother Tree Sound’ and combines the talents of Anna de Bruin, Thea Spiers, Peter Mallinson and Julia Graham. As classical freelance musicians living locally, we had European tours booked as well as appearances with well known UK based orchestras in some of the worlds most prestigious venues and festivals including Carnegie Hall in New York and the BBC Proms. All this alongside daily concerts up and down the country in the UK’s many and varied concert venues bringing music to music lovers everywhere. Suddenly we found ourselves isolating at home with our diaries wiped clean. Then, as things started to relax over the summer, we started to play together again. We played Haydn, Mozart and Mendelssohn outdoors at a cafe called The Drawing Room in Chesham. We also released our second EP ‘Interstices’ and had lovely reviews. We were determined to keep going. Something clicked and it made us realise that we needed to keep playing for our local community. The idea was to nourish the audience with live 52 NOVEMBER 2020

music and to provide a much-needed platform for us to continue to do what we do – to bring joy through performing wonderful, inspirational live music. We organised 3 concerts at Little Missenden church who welcomed us with open arms. A reviewer from ‘close up culture’ came along and wrote ‘Heavenly, more please, much more’ so we knew we were on the right track. People’s eyes shone behind their masks as they clapped enthusiastically, and we streamed our concerts to over 1000 viewers online. We have planned more socially distanced Christmas concerts this December – one at Little Missenden on 20th December and another at St Michaels church Amersham on 17th December. Limited tickets via our website brothertreesound will be available on event brite and will conform to all social distancing and sanitation measures. You can also find details of how to make a muchneeded donation to our creative projects on these pages which include commissions of new music and a recording for ‘Resonus’ record label. November recipe & kitchen news

N

ovember signals the start of the autumn into winter transition and the days feel distinctly shorter as the dark evenings draw in. In the kitchen we turn the heat up a notch with warming and comforting dishes, game is in full swing and root vegetables coming into their own. This month I have shared a recipe for pain d’epices, a delicious spiced ginger bread which can be served warm with some good West Country salted butter, you may also like to dry and crumb any leftover slices to create a wonderful breadcrumb coating for you to

experiment with or simply lightly toast some crumbly pieces to add to a warm salad such as duck to add a rich warm textured spice note perhaps with a few toasted sesame seeds and a little honey, ginger, orange and soy dressing.

“In the kitchen we turn the heat up a notch with warming and comforting dishes, game is in full swing and root vegetables coming into their own”

Skate back in time at the Hampton Court Palace Ice Rink

S

kate back in time this winter with an unforgettable visit to the Hampton Court Palace Ice Rink, situated in the grounds of King Henry VIII’s stunning Tudor palace. One of the highlights of the festive calendar, skaters can enjoy spectacular riverside views by day, before the historic façade is lit up at night, creating a dramatic backdrop to any session. This year will feature an even larger rink, giving skaters the space to enjoy a memorable day out on the ice. With new measures having been introduced to ensure that every visit is safe and secure, skaters can relax and enjoy the festive atmosphere. There’ll be hygiene standards fit for a king or a queen, as well as staggered skate sessions, ensuring fewer people on the ice at any one time. Little ones can also find their feet with the assistance of the penguin or dolphin skate aids available to hire – just remember that pre-booking is required! Once you’ve worked up an appetite on the ice, it’s time to head inside and satisfy those cravings at the Ice Rink Café and Bar. Tuck into hearty winter warming dishes, indulgent treats and a range of delicious hot and cold beverages, all created by Miss Polly’s. For anyone not wanting to brave the ice itself, snacks can also be enjoyed from the specially designed spectator area to ensure no one misses out on the action!

The fun doesn’t stop on the rink, and no trip would be complete without a visit inside Hampton Court Palace itself, walking in the footsteps of some of history’s most famous kings and queens. One of the most famous buildings in Britain, visitors can explore the grand State Apartments, where festive events have taken place for almost 500 years, and see the palace dressed for the season with traditional decorations from across

the centuries. Marvel at King Henry VIII’s Great Hall with its grand hammer beam ceiling, which craftsmen created to evoke the nostalgia of its medieval predecessors and under which hundreds of years of feasting have taken place. Pay a visit to the Tudor Kitchens where Christmas dinners of times gone by would have been prepared, before stepping into King William III’s awe-inspiring Baroque apartments. Finish the day with a stroll through the beautiful formal gardens, the perfect activity for a crisp winter’s day. For the first time in its history, the popular Hampton Court Palace Festive Fayre will be taking place across two weekends in December, meaning there’s even more time to shop for gifts for loved ones and soak up the cosy atmosphere. Spread across the palace’s historic cobbled courtyards and the sprawling East Front formal gardens, the Fayre offers a food lover’s wonderland, with an array of stalls boasting artisan produce, delicious street food and unique gifts guaranteed to offer a memorable day out. churros and fudge to craft cider and hot chocolate, taste buds are guaranteed to be tingling after a stroll around the buzzing market stalls. And mouth-watering smells won’t be the only sense evoked, as the sound of Christmas classics will fill the air with the return of the much-loved bandstand, offering entertainment and live music for all to enjoy.

ine art does more than just add a dash of elegance or ‘Je ne sais quoi’ to your décor. In fact, with returns of up to 64.4% you would be mad not to take it more seriously. Winter Illnesses – What’s what?

This month we ask Your Doctor’s Dr Riccardo Di Cuffa the difference between some of the most common winter illnesses and when should you seek help from a GP?

How to protect against winter illnesses • Get the flu vaccine. • Wash your hands frequently, do social distancing and wearing a mask. • Stop infections spreading by staying at home until you feel better. • Try to get eight hours of good quality sleep a night. • Keep your stress levels manageable. • Regular exercise can help protect against all sorts of illnesses.

The Common Cold The flu and the common cold are both respiratory illnesses, but they are caused by totally different viruses, with flu symptoms generally being much worse than a common cold. A cold cannot therefore turn into the flu because it is caused by a different virus.

The Flu If you have the flu you may have a fever, the chills, feel extremely tired, have a bad cough and your muscles may ache. It is important to rest, stay as comfortable as possible, drink plenty of water throughout the day, take a paracetamol or ibuprofen to lower your temperature and ease any aches. If you are worried or your symptoms haven’t improved after a week speak to your GP.

Bronchitis Bronchitis is an infection of the bronchi in the lungs which become irritated and inflamed causing 66 NOVEMBER 2020

a cough which can last for two to three weeks. See your GP or call 111 if you or your child can’t perform normal activities or are coughing up blood or a lot of mucus or have difficulty breathing.

Norovirus The main symptoms of norovirus the ‘winter vomiting bug’ are nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, high temperatures, a headache and aching muscles. It usually passes in two or three days.

Pneumonia Pneumonia is a severe lung infection that is caused either by a virus or a bacterial infection or after exposure to extremely cold temperatures. Symptoms include breathlessness, high-grade fever, chest pain and weakness amongst others. Antibiotics can help treat a bacterial infection whilst antivirals help in some cases with viral pneumonia.

• Try and get outside once a day to get Vitamin D to help fight inflammatory illnesses. • Have a balanced diet packed with healthy fruit, vegetables and fibre. • Stop smoking as it can severely affect your immune system. your-doctor.co.uk 0330 088 2020

Gain Without Pain? A cynic investigates

I

t was following a fundraising auction (post sumptuous feast and rather too much alcoholic lubrication) that I found myself in possession of a voucher for four sessions of something called ‘EM Sculpt’. I must confess, I hadn’t looked too closely at the details, but I was pretty sure that I’d heard something about building abdominal muscle whilst simultaneously burning fat, a not-too-shabby prospect for a mum of two with a pretty sedentary lifestyle. The course of treatment had been donated by Beaconsfield’s S-Thetics, a medical aesthetic clinic with impressive reviews run by Surgeon and Cosmetic Doctor, Miss Sherina Balaratnam. ‘No Pain, No Gain’ were, however, lodged deep in my psyche and left me questioning the wisdom of my purchase. It was too late now, though, so I put aside my cynicism and booked my first session. First impressions of the Clinic were good, a discreet entrance, tucked away in Beaconsfield Old Town, opened on to a sleek, modern reception area with a distinct air of calm. Covid measures on entry were reassuringly thorough. Miss Sherina Balaratnam immediately put me at my ease with her calming manner and her detailed explanation of the science behind EM (electro magnetic) Sculpt and its benefits. Apparently, each 30 minute session is equivalent to 20,000 sit-ups, the total course giving

70 NOVEMBER 2020

my abdominal muscles a work out equivalent to 80,000 sit-ups. No, I didn’t get that wrong, it really is that rigorous. After taking my measurements, I was invited to recline on a treatment bed while two paddles were strapped to my abdomen. I was told to relax as electromagnetic pulses began to pound my body, causing a distinctly odd but reassuringly painless sensation reminiscent of the Tens machine I used during labour, albeit vastly more powerful. The time passed quickly, due in part to a running video of the Brazilian Football Team being treated to similar treatments on their calves and thighs. Of scientific interest only, of course. After four sessions I could genuinely see a marked difference in the muscle tone of my abdomen, not a six pack by any means, but better definition than I’ve seen for some considerable years. It’s not just the aesthetics either, the added strength has raised my yoga skills to impressive new heights (planking challenges now accepted). The fat reduction is a slow process and will take up to three months post treatment to complete, so the final results are a way off yet, but the reduction in my cynicism is marked enough to see me booking a second course to target my upper arms. Now where did I put those short-sleeves tops? sthetics.co.uk

Beaconsfield Outpatient Centre opens in the midst of a global health crisis

“Our focus has shifted during the pandemic to simply provide patients access to a range of healthcare services that are otherwise currently unavailable” - Gary Robinson, Chief Executive.

N

o one can contest that the focus of the past eight months, arguably longer, has been Covid-19. What was initially considered a passing event, the reality hit home in March this year, when the pandemic spiralled out of control, and the UK, and the rest of the world, went into lockdown. The impact took everybody by surprise and not least the healthcare sector. Almost all hospitals, NHS and private, ceased with non-urgent surgical cases, and patients, especially those with chronic diseases, were left wondering, and worrying, how their health would be managed. A medical provider that felt the impact of the crisis on a local level was Doctor Now, an established private medical practice in Beaconsfield. Doctor Now was at the final stages of launching The Beaconsfield Clinic, a private outpatient centre to complement their existing 24hr GP service. Dr Brian McGirr, Founder and Medical Director “The project has always been an ambition for Doctor Now and I am delighted that we have managed to stay on track during an extremely challenging period. We thank our loyal patients, our local NHS GP colleagues and

consultant community in supporting what has become a vital hub for patients in gaining access to primary care, secondary care and diagnostic services”. The services available at the clinic include 24hr GP access, gynaecology and fertility, cardiology, orthopaedics, physiotherapy, urology, ophthalmology, podiatry, general surgery, dermatology, pain management and access to a range of radiology services. Gary Robinson, Chief Executive “It has without doubt been a challenging few months, however, we have remained focused on launching The Beaconsfield Clinic so that we can provide patients with rapid access to a range medical services that have otherwise been unavailable. I am extremely proud of the team in their efforts to serve and support our patient community”. The Beaconsfield Clinic premises is a stunning period building in beautiful grounds with the primary goal of providing patients with a seamless service in a welcoming and relaxing environment. “We still have much to achieve, however, our current focus is in supporting our local community in providing access to healthcare, especially for those whom are suffering or worried about a partner or family member”. Doctor Now and The Beaconsfield Clinic are both private healthcare providers with a unique relationship with local NHS services. As the demand for rapid access to healthcare increases and the population’s attitude to health evolves, Doctor Now and The Beaconsfield Clinic are uniquely positioned to provide a reactive, and more importantly, proactive healthcare service.

How to Feng Shui Your Home for the New Year Bring balance and harmony to your home with the art of Feng Shui. Placing emphasis on our surroundings and wellbeing, Rebecca Snowden, Interior Style Advisor at FurnitureChoice.co.uk shares 3 ways to bring positive energy flow to your home just in time for the new year.

edges of wall hangings with the soft curves of a sofa or mirror in the living room. This will balance out the room and give it a more relaxing feel.” Create a calming space in the bedroom A bedroom is a place of rest so it is important to create a calm and soothing ambience. To maintain a relaxing atmosphere, remove or hide mirrors to avoid an overload of energy in one space. When it comes to furniture placement, the bed should be the main focus of the room. “In feng shui, this symbolises a commanding position that allows you to take charge and handle life’s many challenges,” Rebecca explains. “The bed is best positioned diagonally away from your door as you will still be able to see it clearly while not being in a direct line to it.” “Placing your bed up against the wall will also give you a sense of security and ground you when you sleep. And for extra strength and stability, a bed with a headboard will represent this with its solid support and build.” Declutter the home for balance and good flow of energy Directly translated as ‘wind-water’ in English, feng shui is an ancient Chinese practice that helps align external surroundings with inner wellbeing and emotional needs. By inviting good energy flow into the home, good health, luck and wealth are set to follow. The first step to starting this process is by decluttering as much as possible. “Tidying up is a great way to start the new year with a clean slate,” Rebecca explains. “A neat home works wonders for our mental clarity and overall health. In feng shui, each space is connected to each other and allows positive energy to flow throughout the house. Add a decorative mirror to the living room to make the space feel larger and multiply the positive energy flow. Meanwhile, closets or drawers overloaded with old items block the chi (energy) so it’s best to discard any clutter.” Aside from decluttering, incorporate the yin and yang concept into the décor. Yin (feminine) and yang (masculine) is a belief that two contrasting forces cannot exist without each other. “Apply this concept by mixing different shapes together,” Rebecca suggests. “For example, contrast the sharp

Channel productivity in the home office Similar to the bedroom, the home office should be decorated to match its purpose. “Since this room places emphasis on productivity, the desk should be the main focus here,” Rebecca says. “It’s also important to accessorise thoughtfully to maintain a neat space.” “Use plants to invite positive energy and freshen up the home. In feng shui, they are commonly associated as a life force and bring in growth, prosperity and luck. Common indoor plants that are said to attract these good elements include the pothos (money plant), lucky bamboo and peace lily.”

CRAFT MEETS ART

L

aunching natural texture frescos and art objects for minimalist, neutral and artful interiors from Vacarda Design Vacarda Design studio has launched several new collections of original décor and limited series artworks, all exquisitely handmade with Italian plaster. By reinventing traditional material and craftsmanship techniques, Tanya Vacarda, the brand face of Vacarda Design, creates artisan art objects with beautiful texture and organic design that invite soothing energy and tranquillity to any interior settings.

INTERTWINED: A New Tradition Introducing an original collection of plaster weave tapestries that explores the relationship between the material, form and craft. Traditionally, plaster is seen as a sub-serving material that can only exist as a surface coating. By treating it as a textile, Vacarda gives the plaster pliability and the independence to take on new forms and surprising shapes. Each hanging is crafted as one-of-a-kind work, unique to Vacarda Design. It is hand-made by fusing Italian plaster with chiffon, cutting it into strips and weaving together in a pattern suggested by the dynamics between the strips. The result is a unique pliable plaster tapestry with a loose, unrepeatable design. Created in milky white colour with earthy tints of brown, these small decorative hangings are perfect for minimalist and natural colour palette settings with an artsy character.

FINE ART: Tactile Silhouettes

“Transience” is the limited series of original portraits that explores the definitions of beauty. Made exclusively with Italian plaster on canvas in 84 NOVEMBER 2020

Tanya Vacarda’s own technique and style, these exceptionally textured artworks are unusually tactile and nothing like you have seen in the world of figurative art before.

THE RENEWED ART OF FRESCO: Embracing The Flow A search for balance between natural imperfection, the random and visual harmony, the Aurora Etudes series of fresco paintings is all about organic design flow and striking texture that are soothing and calming. You will never see a pattern that repeats itself. Instead, your eye and hand will wander across the random lines and marks of the trowel, finding new details every time. Naturally. Made in earthy tones of clay, coco, milk, light grey and damask rose, these fresco paintings invite the grounding energy of nature to the settings, enhancing any interior, by capturing the process when the random becomes beautiful. vacardadesign.com

ABOUT VACARDA DESIGN Vacarda Design, founded by Tanya Vacarda in 2018, specialises in artisan wall coverings with a serious textural appeal. Using Italian plasters and her own unique technique, Tanya Vacarda creates one-of-a-kind art objects and artistic finishes that have the flexibility and mobility that a modern and more fluid way of life demands without compromising on the authenticity of material and the craft. Tanya Vacarda’s technique has evolved from the craft of Italian plasterers and fresco artists. By blending pigments with Italian plaster and applying it in thin layers upon each other, Tanya creates tactile surface designs with unique colour patterns that are then enhanced with paint, delicate embroidery, silk and other textile embellishments. Each work requires skills, time and the right state of mind to become a timeless piece of art. “My craft and art are driven by the passion for authenticity, the need for a mindful approach to the creative process and respect for the craft. These are the qualities that, for me, define luxury and make it timeless. My style is not about chasing perfection. It evolved from observing nature and learning about how it turns random coincidences into something incredibly beautiful, creating harmonious patterns out of a series of imperfections.”

A wealth of choice at Window Wise

Window Wise Company Ltd are approaching their 40th year in business and the choices now available have never been so apparent.

C

o-owner Christian Metcalfe explains:“From replacing one or two windows and doors, a complete refurbishment project or new build, the products and choices available now to customers are greater than ever”. A lot of important decision have to be made to ensure that the designs and styles of the windows and doors compliment the property and also comply with the glazing and security regulations that are now required. Colour options on both uPVC and aluminium frames have increased over the last 5 years and it is quite often that a large door system in either bifolding or sliding is a different colour finish to the rest of the windows, which in turn makes a feature of the property. It’s even the case now with a traditional looking house that the front elevation can retain the character, but the rear can be transformed into a contemporary look with the glazing being the prime factor in the design. Being able to show customers all of the products and choices available were one of the most important decisions when Window Wise relocated to their new showroom.

Christian adds “ My business partner, Bruce (Hutchens) and I understand that potential customers want to have the opportunity to come and see, feel, touch, open/close the windows and doors. They want to have a close look at the frames, look at the finishes available, glass options and handles etc. We are very mindful of the power of photographs on internet websites/social media and how they provide early ideas of what customers want; however we wanted to be part of the next stage and give customers the opportunity to come and see the quality of the products we offer.
