he month of March is, of course, home to fashion. We’re celebrating Los Angeles Fashion Week with a round-up of events on page xx, and we take a look inside the New Era D-Lab at the Staples Center on page 38. If you are more into your jewellery and watches, visit the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County for your last chance to view stunning “Juliet Pink” and rare “Argyle Violet” diamonds. The exhibition finishes on March 19 and you can read more on page 22. Rolex’s Oyster was the first waterproof and dustproof wristwatch in the world, an innovation that transformed watch design forever. Read how the watch is so robust it can withstand treks from the highest peaks to the high seas and farthest reaches (page 40). There are plenty of other events happening in LA this month. Enjoy celebrating television shows at Paleyfest LA from March 17-26 (page 24). Or indulge your creative side by taking in an art exhibition at LACMA (page 26). One of the biggest sporting events in the LA diary is also happening this month – the LA Marathon. Thousands of runners will complete the 22.219 mile course on March 19. Take a look at some of the statistics and the all important race course on page 17. If you are taking part – good luck! However, if that seems too exhausting, instead head to recently opened Bottlefish on San Vicente Boulevard for delicious seafood and an exceptional wine list. We step inside to take a look on page 56. Enjoy the issue.

POLKADOTS AND MOONBEAMS The fabulously-named Polkadots and Moonbeams has always been a hotspot for stylists, film and television costumers, fashionistas and celebrities. The vintage store was opened way back in 1982, with the modern store opening a couple years later on the same block. The Bonfire Sweater $145 gets our vote, as does the Deck Sweater Dress, $248. 8361 (for modern) and 8367 (for vintage) W. 3rd Street, West Hollywood, CA 90046

The Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon is calling all runners to make their mark in history on March 19

T

he 26.219 mile (42.195 km) footrace, inspired by the success of the 1984 Summer Olympic Games, has been contested every year since 1986. While there are no qualifying standards to be eligible to participate in the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon, runners wishing to receive an official time must successfully complete the course in 6.5 hours. To date there have been 481,487 official finishers. Los Angeles is a popular venue for novice marathoners, and on average 53 percent of the runners who make up the field are attempting a marathon for the first time. This year, beyond completing the 26.2 mile run on the iconic “Stadium to the Sea” course – a feat in itself – many runners will also be attempting an official Guinness World Records title – from creative costumed records like fastest marathon dressed as Elvis (current record: 2 hr 42 min 52 sec), to record challenges that require additional agility or skill, such as fastest marathon running with an egg and spoon (current record: 3 hr 47 min). Helping to make this already extraordinary attempt event more memorable, Guinness World Records, the global authority on record breaking achievement, will provide record-breaking hopefuls with on-the-day record verification at the 2017 race. “Partnering with Guinness World Records is a natural fit for the Skechers Performance Los

Angeles Marathon, and we’re thrilled to present runners this opportunity to exceed extraordinary limits and make their race experience even more special,” said Tracey Russell, Chief Executive of Conqur Endurance Group, the organizer of the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon. “The annual race reflects Los Angeles’ signature style and vibrancy, and adding a record-breaking element further enhances the race as one of the most unique, fun and world-class endurance events in the US and around the world.” The Marathon has been through several course layouts since its inception, most of which started and finished in downtown Los Angeles. On September 25, 2008, former Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team owner Frank McCourt, through his affiliate, LA Marathon LLC, acquired the operating rights to the marathon. Less than 14 months later, on November 9, 2009, race organizers unveiled a new “Stadium to the Sea” course which shifted the start line to Dodger Stadium and the finish line to the Santa Monica Pier. Due to the enthusiasm generated by the dynamic new point-to-point course, the 2010 edition of the race drew 26,054 registrants (22,361 finishers), making it the largest field in the history of the event. The LA Marathon’s roots can be traced back to the Games of the XXIII Olympiad, where United States Olympic Committee head Peter Ueberroth

RESTROOMS There are portable restrooms located at the Start Line, along the entire course just past each Aid Station, and at the Finish Line.

Markers will be positioned at each 5km split. Digital clocks at the Finish Line will display unofficial finish times. The elapsed event time begins with the male elite start.

DROPPING OUT For runners unable to finish the course, Down Drop Runner vans will be available at various Aid Stations from miles 7-23. If you would like to drop out of the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon, make your way to an Aid Station. These vans will provide runners adequate transportation back to the Central Drop Area at the intersection of Main St and Olympic Drive in Santa Monica, which is approximately five blocks from the Finish Area. Runners who have dropped out of the race may not cross the Finish Line. Runners that cross the Finish Line despite having been transported to the Finish via van will be disqualified and barred from future events.

introduced a new way to fund and stage large-scale, international sporting events. The 1984 Games, the second to be hosted by Los Angeles, were a critical and financial success, generating a profit of $223 million and resurrecting the foundering Olympic movement. The 2010 silver anniversary edition of the race, and the “Stadium to the Sea” course, marked the first time that parts of the marathon were run outside the city limits of Los Angeles. While the new course still starts near downtown Los Angeles, it now runs through the eclectic communities of West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, West Los Angeles and Santa Monica. Later this month, over 25,000 athletes from all 50 states and more than 60 countries will set out from Dodger Stadium to accomplish a personal dream by reaching the Finish Line in Santa Monica. The Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon is known for its start-to-finish entertainment program to encourage runners and to celebrate the city’s diversity. Dozens of bands will play along the course, celebrating the triumph of each marathoner. As runners leave Beverly Hills and head toward Mile 18, they are greeted by over 600 hundred local cheerleaders making noise to encourage runners get to the Finish Line of the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon. Cheer Alley is the Pep Rally of the Year, and is comprised of Middle and High School cheerleaders from across Southern California. This is the fifth year of the competition and each squad will perform their 2-minute routine, and then will line the course to cheer on runners. Squads will be judged on overall spirit, creativity, showmanship and uniform.

After leading race participants into the community of Brentwood, the course continues along San Vicente Boulevard, a popular, pedestrianfriendly street which attracts runners of all abilities 365 days a year. The final three miles of the marathon are set in Santa Monica, where the course eventually runs along scenic bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, and it concludes on Ocean Avenue near the Santa Monica Pier and its stunning solarpowered Ferris wheel.

T

he Diamonds: Rare Brilliance exhibition at the Natural History Museum, brings together rare colored gems never before seen in the United States inside the Museum’s renowned Gem and Mineral Hall. At the center of Rare Brilliance is “Juliet Pink Diamond,” which is an extremely rare pink diamond of over 30 carats, and a Fancy Deep Grayish Bluish Violet named the “Argyle Violet Diamond” after the Argyle mine in Western Australia, where it was discovered in 2015. Through stunning examples, such as the fluorescent lighting of a “rainbow” diamond necklace and a very rare Victorian Orchid Diamond, the exhibition brings to light the rare properties of colored gemstones, the science behind natural colored diamonds, and how the interplay of light and chemistry gives diamonds color. Organized in partnership with L.J. West Diamonds, Rare Brilliance is on view until March 19. “We are thrilled to share these gems, which are incredibly rare in color, intensity, quality and size — and so brilliantly fashioned from the original roughs — with museum visitors, providing opportunities to learn about the geology, physics and chemistry behind each diamond’s sparkle and hue,” said Dr. Aaron Celestian, NHMLA’s Associate Mineralogy Curator. “These jewels, on loan from L.J. West, capture the imagination shine amongst the Museum’s world-renowned collection of gems and minerals.” The Juliet Pink Diamond, set in a necklace with marquise, pear and round-cut white diamonds totaling 98.70 carats for the exhibition, has been designated a type IIa diamond by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) for its remarkable chemical purity and clarity. diamonds are a strikingly rare phenomenon, occurring in an estimated one out of every 10,000 gems, and the precise science behind individual colors remains an area of active research. In addition to the Juliet Pink Diamond, Diamonds: Rare Brilliance introduces U.S. audiences to one of the world’s rarest diamonds – a Fancy Deep Grayish Bluish Violet named the “Argyle Violet” after the Argyle mine in Western Australia. There are no other known diamonds of this combination of colors or with the same clarity and size, and it is the largest Violet to be discovered in the Argyle Diamond Mine. The 9.17-carat original rough stone was an unusual shape characterized by deep grooves and an uneven surface. After more than 80 hours of carving and polishing, the diamond on view in NHMLA’s Gem Vault is a 2.83-carat oval that is set in a ring. “We are so pleased to be able to share these exceptional stones with the public through the Rare Brilliance exhibition at the Natural History Museum of L.A.,” said Larry West from L.J. West Diamonds. “Just as the ring and necklace settings provide a backdrop to highlight the brilliance of the cut stones, the excellent company of NHMLA’s Gem and Mineral Hall collection will provide the perfect context for these rare and important diamonds.” Diamonds: Rare Brilliance coincides with the reopening of NHMLA’s popular Gem and Mineral Store, open now through Spring 2017, featuring a wide selection of gem and mineral décor and accessories. EXHIBITION FOCUS Renaissance and Reformation: German Art in the Age of Dürer and Cranach

C

oinciding with the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, this exhibition brings to Los Angeles some of the greatest achievements of German Renaissance art. The period under consideration (1460–1580) was marked by conflicts, civil wars, and complex relationships with neighboring countries, but it also witnessed a flourishing of many states and cities, reflected in the skills of their craftsmen. Additionally, the era was characterized by profound changes in thought, philosophy, science, and religion, spearheaded by Martin Luther’s writings, which in turn transformed the work of many artists of the day such as Albrecht Dürer, Lucas Cranach, Hans Holbein, Mathias Grünwald, Tilman Riemenschneider, and Peter Vischer. These revolutionary ideas and innovations played a transformational role in the development of modern Western societies.

“The exhibition comprises over 100 objects, including paintings, drawings, sculptures, arms and armor, as well as decorative arts” The exhibition comprises over 100 objects, including paintings, drawings, sculptures, arms and armor, as well as decorative arts. It provides a rare opportunity to view works by artists not typically represented in local collections in Los Angeles,” said Michael Govan, LACMA CEO and Wallis Annenberg Director. “The exhibition brings together some of 2 6 mar c h 2 0 1 7

the finest works by the greatest artists, painters, sculptors, and craftsmen of the period,” says J. Patrice Marandel, the Robert H. Ahmanson Chief Curator of European Art at LACMA. “We are very pleased to present the show on the momentous occasion of the Reformation’s 500th anniversary.” Renaissance and Reformation is designed by Frederick Fisher and Partners.

Exhibition Background The 1517 publication of Martin Luther’s Ninetyfive Theses set in motion one of the greatest movements of ideas in European history. What began as a challenge to the Church for the practice of selling “indulgences,” or vouchers for reduced time in Purgatory, developed into a religious and political movement that reshaped the Western Christian world. Luther’s Reformation, while considered from a strictly theological viewpoint, should also be studied within the complex political realities of early 16th-century Europe that includes struggles for power from various sides: the German princes, the House of Habsburg, and the Roman Catholic Church. It can also be viewed as one of the early manifestations of the broad movements of ideas and reconsiderations of the world’s order that define the Renaissance. The Reformation’s insistence upon the individual is also a trait that will be at the center of many humanist writers’ works later in the century. Artists were affected by such changes. The structure of their profession was changing as the Church lost ground along with its sponsorship of artists. Some hinted in their works at a new attitude

LAST CHANCE TO SEE Toba Khedoori Until March 19 toward the divine. Others embraced neutral forms, such as the portrait, and gave it a new dimension.

Exhibition Organization Renaissance and Reformation is arranged in five major thematic sections which explore the fundamental changes that took place in art and society during the Reformation. Traditional Imagery and Devotion illustrates the changes to visual language brought about by the Reformation. Propaganda and Polemics illustrates the extent to which developments in art, media, and politics were intertwined. Arms and Armor: The Splendor of the Saxon Court explores the political dimensions of the Reformation, while illustrating the extraordinary cultural significance of the princely states embroiled in the conflict raging between emergent religious factions. Landscapes, historical scenes, and figures from ancient mythology – the themes explored in Humanism and Reality – attest to new and transformed ways of looking at the world, incorporating both idealized visions of classical antiquity and fastidious observations of nature and people. Here, the focus is upon delicate drawings by Albrecht Dürer, Lucas Cranach, Hans Beham, Hans Schäufelin, and Albrecht Altdorfer, as well as a number of other artists. Portraiture enjoyed great favor in European painting from the 15th century onward. As religious paintings were less in demand, commissions for individual portraits increased and the studios adapted themselves to the new demand. Furthermore, the insistence of the new Faith on the individual found an echo in the art of portraiture. Particularly sensitive are the drawn portraits. Whether executed as studies for prints or as free-standing works of art, German artists often used a combination of techniques and crayons to render their subjects with surprising likeness. Their delicate approach to the medium remains one of the most spectacular achievements of the German Renaissance. On until 26 March. All exhibitions on show at The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 5905 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA, 90036. www.lacma.org

Toba Khedoori explores the artist’s nuanced and powerful body of work. Born in Sydney, Australia in 1964, Khedoori has lived and worked in Los Angeles since 1990. Her early works are notable for their precise draftsmanship and for their use of negative space—often at a very large scale. Khedoori frequently depicts architectural forms from distanced perspectives, rendering commonplace objects and spaces familiar yet decontextualized. In recent years, she has transitioned from paper to canvas, producing smaller-scale works that hover between representation and abstraction. Like her earlier compositions, these works are enigmatic and acutely detailed; in an art world awash with rapidly moving images and saturated colors, Khedoori remains committed to the silent, slow, and exacting process of working by hand. The exhibition is the first major museum presentation of Khedoori’s new paintings and her first survey in fifteen years. In addition to contributing to the rapidly growing recognition of the work of women artists, Toba Khedoori extends LACMA’s efforts to trace the recent history of art in Southern California

THE OYSTER

from the highest peaks to the most extreme depths

T

he Oyster was the first waterproof and dustproof wristwatch in the world. It was an innovation that transformed watch design forever. Precise, robust and reliable, the Oyster became the timekeeper of choice for explorers and pioneers of all types whose exploits played a part in forging the status of this legendary watch. Today, Rolex has further reinforced the performance criteria that qualify Oyster watches as Superlative Chronometers. Created in 1926, the Rolex Oyster was a landmark in watchmaking that brought Fundamental improvements to the reliability and precision of the wristwatch. The brand has always brought its unique expertise to bear on manufacturing watches of exceptional performance. Rolex has registered more than 400 patents in the course of its history, and unceasingly innovates in

order to continue to enhance the performance of its watches. Today, the Oyster case, entirely manufactured by Rolex, is waterproof to a minimum depth of 100 metres (330 feet) – 300 metres (1,000 feet) for the Submariner, and 3,900 metres (12,800 feet) for the Rolex Deepsea. Its middle case is crafted from a solid block of 904L steel, 18 ct gold or 950 platinum. The fluted case back is hermetically screwed down with a special tool that allows only Rolex watchmakers to access the movement. (Today the bezel is no longer screwed down.) The winding crown screws down securely against the case offering watertight security akin to a submarine’s hatch. The robust waterproof Oyster case provides the high-precision movement with optimal protection from water, dust, pressure and shocks. The exceptional robustness and reliability of

THE FARTHEST REACHES Caver and volcanologist Haroun Tazieff, an Oyster wearer since the 1950s, adopted the Explorer II, which he wore over his thermal suit in the heat of eruptions. In a letter addressed to Rolex headquarters in 1972, he wrote: “[My watch] has just passed, with flying colors, its first – and extremely demanding – volcanic test, in very aggressive gases on Mount Etna. It worked perfectly, which was not the case for the watches of my teammates.”

THE HIGH SEAS

the Oyster have established it as the watch of reference for explorers and pioneers in many fields. As such, it has accompanied famous expeditions and exploits of the 20th and 21st centuries; so many world records and outstanding achievements that have forged the iconic status of Rolex Oyster watches.

The highest peaks Since the 1930s, the Oyster has accompanied numerous Himalayan expeditions. In 1953, Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, members of a British expedition led by Sir John Hunt, were the first to reach Everest’s 8,848-metre summit. Sir John reported, “Rolex Oyster watches… performed splendidly, and we have indeed come to look upon Rolex Oysters as an important part of highclimbing equipment”.

The chronometric precision of Oyster watches makes them ideal navigational instruments. In 1967, Sir Francis Chichester became the first yachtsman to circumnavigate the globe single-handed. Returning to a hero’s welcome and knighted by the Queen for his achievement, he wrote in a letter in 1968: “During my voyage around the world in Gipsy Moth IV, my Rolex watch was knocked off my wrist several times without being damaged. I cannot imagine a hardier timepiece. When using [it] for sextant work and working the foredeck, it was frequently banged, also doused by waves coming aboard; but it never seemed to mind all this.”

“The only diving instruments which performed all the time were our Rolex watches – the Oyster Perpetual Rolex Deepsea model” DEEPSEA UNDER THE POLE EXPEDITION, 2010

THE EXTREME DEPTHS The waterproofness of Oyster watches naturally predestines them for use in underwater exploration, in which Rolex has played a pioneering role since 1953, when it introduced the Submariner model, waterproof first to 100 metres (330 feet) and then to 300 metres (1,000 feet). In 1960, in the Pacific Ocean south-west of Guam, the bathyscaphe Trieste, piloted by Swiss oceanographer Jacques Piccard and U.S. Navy Lieutenant Don Walsh, reached a record depth of 10,916 metres in the deepest point of the oceans in the Mariana Trench. Attached to the exterior, an experimental Oyster, the Deep Sea Special, withstood the colossal pressure mar c h 2 0 1 7 4 1

of more than one tonne per square centimetre and returned to the surface in perfect working order. In the early 1970s, Rolex began collaborating with Comex (Compagnie Maritime d’Expertises), the world leader in marine engineering and deep-sea saturation diving. Rolex watches, particularly the Oyster Perpetual Sea-Dweller, waterproof to a depth of 1,220 metres (4,000 feet), were standard equipment for Comex. They were the only watches the firm’s elite divers fully trusted on their saturation dives to great depths – when precise timing is of vital importance at every stage. In 1988, the Hydra VIII mission by Comex set the world open-sea diving record at a depth of 534 metres. In 1992, a Comex diver reached an experimental depth of 701 metres in a hyperbaric chamber. Both records still stand today. In 2012, Rolex played an active part in film-maker (Titanic, Avatar) and explorer James Cameron’s Deepsea Challenge expedition, in partnership with the National Geographic Society. On 26 March, the expedition descended 10,908 metres (35,787 feet) to reach Challenger Deep, the oceans’ deepest point, located in the Mariana Trench south-west of Guam in the Pacific Ocean. A Rolex watch attached to the manipulator arm of the submersible accompanied James Cameron on the dive: an Oyster Perpetual Rolex Deepsea Challenge, an experimental divers’ watch specially developed and manufactured for the occasion. “The Rolex Deepsea Challenge was the reliable companion throughout the dive, it was visible on the sub’s manipulator arm and working precisely at more than 10,000 metres down at the bottom of Challenger Deep,” James Cameron said after his historic dive. “It’s a tremendous example of engineering know-how, and an ideal match for the Deepsea Challenger submersible.”

THE POLES The Oyster has proven its incredible reliability in the course of numerous expeditions on the pack ice of the poles. The many polar adventures include the British Trans-Arctic Expedition in 1969; the various expeditions, since 1976, of navigator and explorer Janusz Kurbiel to Iceland, to Greenland or in search of the magnetic north pole; Robert Swan’s expeditions to Antarctica; Erling Kagge’s conquest of the North Pole (1990), South Pole (1993) and Everest (1994); and Alain Hubert’s Arctic Arc 4 4 mar c h 2 0 1 7

expedition, a journey from Siberia to Greenland via the North Pole in 2007. Wearing an Oyster, in 2006 Norwegian adventurer Rune Gjeldnes became the first and only person in the world to cross the three big ice sheets – Greenland, the Arctic Ocean and Antarctica – unsupported. In November 2005, Gjeldnes started on “The Longest March”, a threemonth, 4,800 km solo ski trek across the South Pole which he completed in February 2006. He now holds the records for the longest ski journey of any kind without resupply and the longest ski journey of all time. Of his Rolex watch, he said: “My Rolex is my ‘best friend’ on expeditions. It’s essential to have a precise and robust mechanical watch. I do trust my Rolex and it makes me feel safe knowing I can rely on it in the most difficult conditions.” Since its early days, the oyster watch has been known for its superlative performance. The notion of superlative chronometer was first formulated in the late 1950s and has formed a centrepiece of the dial markings of all Oyster watches ever since. Now this designation has been reinforced with the introduction of a new Rolex certification that is more rigorous than existing watchmaking standards and is applied to 100 per cent of the brand’s watches. www.rolex.com

The art of sophisticated dining at The Gallery About the Owner Karim Megji is the Executive Chef and Owner of The Gallery

T

he Gallery is a casual yet sophisticated restaurant serving a seasonal, modern American menu that is refined yet approachable and highlights multicultural influences and flavors such as Indian, Asian, Thai and more. The restaurant offers the freshest seafood housed in the sprawling raw bar, sustainable protein, and farm fresh produce to create a classic menu. Featuring unique, seasonal offerings through food and cocktails, guests are provided with a truly special dining experience unlike anywhere in Westlake Village. Their attention to detail is unmatched and can be seen through their innovative cocktails, locally farmed herbs and ingredients, and hand-selected fish straight from the source.

Menu

The menu is a collaboration between Chef Moez Megji and his son and the Gallery’s owner, Karim Megji. The menu gives guest a multi-cultural flavor experience focused on seasonal, high quality ingredients, sustainable seafood, carefully sourced protein, and fresh, local produce. Signature menu items include our expansive raw bar selections including Yellowtail and watermelon with chili oil

Megji is a California native who grew up in Calabasas, California to a family who was deeply engrained in the restaurant industry. Growing up Megji always had a passion for food and watched his father own and run restaurants from Los Angeles to Westlake Village to Malibu. Karim studied at University California Santa Barbara and went to work in financial management upon graduation. He then decided to transition to food and worked at his father’s restaurant, Fins Seafood and Grill, a well-known establishment in Westlake Village. Karim took his culinary passion to the next level and started training at the Arts Institute in Santa Monica where he studied and trained to be a Chef. After years of working at Fins, Karim completely ran the restaurant until it closed in late 2013. He then decided to open The Gallery Restaurant where he and his father, Moez Megji, are both the Executive Chefs. Karim strives to create a unique dining experience to Westlake Village. The seasonal new American menu highlights a breadth of flavors from Indian, Asian, Mediterranean and beyond which accent his classic dishes. Along with a seasonal craft cocktail menu and a curated beer and wine list. In Karim’s spare time you can find him surfing and exploring Los Angeles’ culinary scene. mar c h 2 0 1 7 4 9

Food with style in Santa Monica By Lisa Haynes, Press Association

5 0 mar c h 2 0 1 7

I

’m not even hungry but I’m scrambling for the most photogenic doughnut from a hipster cardboard box like it’s the last one on earth. I opt for a gooey chocolate ring. But I don’t eat it; not even so much as a lick of the reflective glaze. I’m snapping baked goods on a smartphone as part of a ‘#FoodPorn’ masterclass in Santa Monica. It’s one of hundreds of new experiences that heralds the beginning of Airbnb’s new Trips-with-acapital-T phase, but more of that later. We find our host, 36-year-old Insta food stylist Stephanie Goldfinger, sitting cross-legged on colorful Aztec blankets on Santa Monica’s picturepostcard beach promenade. Donning a mustard T-shirt, floppy hat, and LA-esque white smile, she’s like a 2016 version of Farrah Fawcett. “I’m a little cheesy but I’m a chef, so that’s allowed,” she says with a laugh, introducing herself. Our snap-happy group sits surrounded by Sidecar doughnuts, Izze clementine bottles (striped paper straws mandatory), and a library of glossy foodie magazines for inspiration. We’re shaded from the midday LA sun by rows of towering palm trees. So far, so Instagram-friendly. Stephanie hands out tip sheets for budding foodie pornmakers headlined, ‘Warning: 10 Things

to Expect as a Budding Food Stylist’ that also outline basic smartphone camera angles employed by super-bloggers. She tells us shots of stuffed sandwiches and tacos are the trickiest to do justice in photographs. My tummy rumbles. “I’m going to show you how to make your plate pop,” Stephanie says enthusiastically. “You’ll come out of this looking at food a bit differently – maybe even changing what you order in a restaurant.” As a veggie Insta-chef with a penchant for comfort food, Stephanie’s two-day Food Porn experience also takes in fresh produce shopping at Santa Monica’s Farmers Market, serving/styling lunch tables at her rooftop in Venice, and chatting about the hippest food hangouts on everyone’s lips, like Gjelina and Gjusta. It’s not just food styling but a whistle-stop gourmet tour of LA’s westside districts through Stephanie’s eyes. And that’s precisely what Airbnb is offering via the new Trips app with Experiences. The app may be high-tech but it’s all very people-powered. “We think travel is about who you can become, not just where you go,” said Airbnb co-founder Brian Chesky, at Airbnb Open, the company’s annual conference in Downtown LA. “These aren’t just guided tours, you actually participate.” For one day only (more if you really want to immerse yourself) you can be a kimono stylist in Tokyo or a truffle hunter in Florence. And the list of 500-plus bucket-list experiences goes on and on. There are audible gasps when Chesky unveils a moving preview for ‘Jack, The Prison Warder’ - a Cape Town two-day experience run by Nelson Mandela’s former prison guard and cook. As one of Airbnb’s Social Impact Experiences, 100% of the cost goes to the Nelson Mandela Foundation. Experiences last anything from three-hours, to multi-day ‘immersions’, and are currently available in 12 cities: LA, San Francisco, Miami, Detroit,

“We think travel is about who you can become, not just where you go,” said Airbnb co-founder Brian Chesky” Havana, Paris, London, Florence, Nairobi, Cape Town, Tokyo and Seoul - but a further 39 cities will launch in the next few months. Just a drop in the ocean when you consider the Airbnb juggernaut is now operating in 34,000 cities and more than 191 countries. The Airbnb squad – Chesky, Joe Gebbia and Nate Blecharczyk – have some seriously starry backing in the form of A-listers Ashton Kutcher (an early investor in the company) and Gwyneth Paltrow (just ‘a fan’, apparently). “When I got divorced, I started living in Airbnbs because I had nowhere to live,” Kutcher jokes at the conference. “I stayed somewhere in Europe, arrived at the Airbnb in the middle of the night at 2am and

the host had left me dinner and a glass of wine. It was exactly the magic and love that I needed in that moment.” Maybe Kutcher was the muse behind the app’s new Hollywood-inspired design feature. Experiences are presented in the form of movie poster-style billings that make the host the ‘star’ and feature mini highlight trailers. The movie poster is especially apt for Kevin Townsley, an Experiences host who runs ‘TV Writers’, one of the most authentic, old school LA trips on the Experiences list. “I’m getting interest from hobbyists, enthusiasts and even people from LA who are already in the industry,” Kevin explains. “You get to experience a day in the life of a TV writer, morning, noon and night, based in three very different LA settings. I’ve already hosted someone who used it as a taster before they moved out here.” Wearing traditional kimono dress and obi, Mika Otani is another Experience Host who stands out at the Airbnb Open. She’s practised the ancient art of Ikebana flower arrangement, or what she calls “living sculptures”, for 30 years. Mika ticks me off when I ask her all about the flowers and not the plants, which are held in equal regard in Japanese culture. Hosting ‘Exquisite Ikebana’ in her home-studio, Atelier Soka, in Tokyo, she continues the theme with attention to detail - wagashi confectionery in the shape of flowers and black tea served with dried petals in the cup. As part of the stay, I explore my super-hip Airbnb district, Silverlake. Before I know it, I’m googling Instagram-worthy brunch spots and stumble across Sawyer – all white marble tables, vaulted high ceilings and statement floral walls. I eye up the bunch of bright chrysanthemums arranged just so on the table, watch the bartender shake up virgin cocktails, and observe the chef ’s attention to detail on my food garnish, realising the untapped potential for experience masterclasses everywhere you look on vacation. I ponder the next ‘Trip’ on my app hit list. And then get back to Instagramming my eggs Florentine, carefully styled up with a side of sunglasses and a glossy magazine. The perfect Cut

CUT Lounge by Wolfgang Puck is now open at Beverly Wilshire, with a new look, new menu and new executive culinary and beverage team 5 2 mar c h 2 0 1 7

T

owards the end of last year, Chef Wolfgang Puck opened CUT Lounge, a new bar and lounge experience in the space formerly occupied by sidebar adjacent to the flagship location of his contemporary steak restaurant CUT by Wolfgang Puck at Beverly Wilshire, A Four Seasons Hotel. In tandem with the opening, Puck announced a new executive culinary and beverage team, leading the charge for both CUT and CUT Lounge. Together, Wolfgang, Corporate Executive Chef/ Partner Lee Hefter and Head Chef Ari Rosenson have named Hilary Henderson as Chef de Cuisine, and Angela Tong as Pastry Chef. Both women have long histories working for the Wolfgang Puck family. Most recently, Chef Tong worked under the direction of Spago Beverly Hills Executive Pastry Chef Della Gossett, while Chef Henderson has worked alongside Chef Ari as Sous Chef of CUT Beverly Hills, in addition to several other roles within the Wolfgang Puck Fine Dining collection. Rounding out the new team is Terence Leavey who joins CUT as Beverage Director, having previously worked under Phillip Dunn at Spago Beverly Hills as a sommelier.

“Guests can order from a collection of shaken, stirred and straight-up cocktails, as well as a list of wine and spirits” Menu A new Rough CUTs menu and expanded beverage offering take center stage at the bar and lounge. Guests can order from a collection of shaken, stirred and straight-up cocktails, as well as a list of wine and spirits including an extensive selection of rare whiskies from Scotland, Japan and beyond. The Rough CUTs menu ranges from seafood forward dishes such as the crispy kataifi wrapped prawns with garlic chili ponzu and shaved bonito to an Alaskan king crab and Santa Barbara uni “cocktail” on avocado toast. Various meat-centric options including a chicken liver “pastrami” with black bread and honey mustard, and a curry beef puff with Yukon gold potato, sweet onions and nonya curry are also available. Guests can also taste a variety of CUT favorites such as the American wagyu steak skewers, truffle grilled cheese and bone marrow toast with oxtail marmalade, as well as a selection of larger, entrée-sized options from a second menu coined “CUT Originals.”

Design Wolfgang and his wife Gelila Assefa Puck joined forces with Waldo Fernandez of Waldo’s Designs to reimagine the former sidebar. With seating for more than 60 guests, CUT Lounge now speaks to a new generation of clientele, creating a warm and sophisticated environment. Guests enter the bar and lounge through two oversized steel and glass doors that create a sense of intimacy and allow for seclusion from the busy Hotel lobby. A neutral palette of beige, browns and greys accent the mid-century modern furnishings and finishes throughout the space. Visitors are welcome to relax on one of the various couches or chairs located throughout the lounge or grab a stool at the newly refinished bar. The mix of modern furniture and accent pieces adds a contemporary twist to the space, while maintaining the sophistication and timelessness of the storied Hotel. www.wolfgangpuck.com mar c h 2 0 1 7 5 3

Europe’s [ fea t u re ]

grape escapes and Sarah Marshall take a trip to Europe for the grape harvest in the wine regions of Portugal, France and Spain

Pete Thompson

Portugal According to numerous Portuguese winemakers, human feet are the perfect tool for pummelling grapes. Far gentler (and with more personality) than a cold, steel machine, treading softens the treasured ingredient without extracting any nasty tannins from seeds. Getting into the spirit of harvest season, I climb into a legare (wine vat) at Quinta da Pacheca and stomp alongside proudly professional old men as they rotate lower limbs in perfect harmony, accompanied by a cheerful accordionist. Sloshing through alcoholic gazpacho is one of the activities offered by Six Senses Douro Valley in late September, although year-round, there’s good reason to visit one of the world’s oldest wine regions. Traditionally known for port production, the Unesco World Heritage area has earned a reputation for award-winning table wines in the last 25 years made mostly by a new generation of ambitious and experimental winemakers who are breathing new life into old practices. Many are invited to lead tasting sessions and dinners at Six Senses, where Tiago Alves de Sousa, who works with his father at Quinta da Gaivosa, introduces me to Abandonado, a wine he was responsible for producing from resurrected vines neglected by the family. “Diversity is what makes this place so wonderful,” he tells me, referring to the 90 grape varieties grown on a cascade of undulating hills which appear to billow like sails in the wind. It’s a quiet secret that’s slowly seeping out, but growing popularity of the Douro has done little to disturb a traditional way of life in villages such as Lamego, where I decline the traditional option to climb 686 steps to reach the Nossa Senhora dos Remedios shrine on my knees. A similar peacefulness pervades the forested grounds of Six Senses, where I enjoy a massage in the hotel’s spa overlooking the snaking Douro River, and hang in a wicker pod nestled between branches while listening to bird song. A renewed burst of energy allows me to take part in one of the hotel’s more energetic activities - climbing a tree. Wearing a helmet and support harness, I realize a childhood dream by scrambling to the top, although the journey down seems a far more daunting prospect. Gazing at my pulsing, perspiring feet - and the diminishing ground below - I’m relieved my toes won’t be treading any grapes today. No one wants to ruin a good vintage, after all. france At Chateau de la Chaize, built between 1674 and 1676, the Marquise de Roussy de Sales shares the fruits of her labour below ground in the longest cellar in Beaujolais. Her property may be steeped in history, but she’s looking to the future by implementing methods of respectful agriculture in her huge vineyard of almost 100 hectares. Vineyards across the region are awash with a mixture of rush and excitement. But the pace is much slower at my base, the dreamy Chateau de Bagnols, a gem of a retreat in the heart of the Pierres Dorees region, just half an hour’s drive from Lyon. Tasting fine wines on a balcony of the historic fairytale castle, I admire jaw-dropping views of Mont Blanc in the distance - another taste of the high life. I start my weekend break in destination hub Lyon. The southern French city has a lot to shout about, including ancient landmarks such as the Amphitheatre of the Three Gauls of Lugdunum, an enticing climate and the small matter of being regarded as the French capital of gastronomy. My tour guide in Lyon recounts a meeting with a councillor back in the 1960s, in which the dignitary was asked about his thoughts on attracting more tourists to the small city in the Rhone-Alpes region. “Why should I want people coming here to drink our best wine?” was his response. He had a point, and as I make the trip back home clutching a few bottles of Beaujolais red, I am grateful that they are now more than happy to share the wealth. PT www.chateaudebagnols.com

spain Wine and wellbeing aren’t an obvious marriage, but as I make my way through a flight of fine wine, I’m easily convinced this could be the path to good health. This innovative approach to choosing a treatment is part of the Spa Sommelier experience at award-winning winery and hotel Abadia Retuerta Le Domaine. Based on my wine preference, an appropriate oil fragrance is selected and I’m treated to a morning of massage and steam room sessions in the Santuario Spa, housed in the former stables of a 12th century abbey. The main building of the Romanesque and Baroque-style property has been meticulously restored as a hotel, with stone corridors surrounding a pretty courtyard and a one-Michelin starred restaurant, Refectorio, occupying a space once used as a dining room for monks. Here, a selection of fine wines from Le Domaine’s winery is served - all produced in this Tempranillorich area, known as Spain’s Golden Mile. It’s possible to take bike rides through 500 acres of vineyards, eat picnics beneath shady trees or tour winemaking facilities a short walk down the road. There’s no airport in Valladolid, so travel involves an hour’s train journey from Madrid and a 25-minute transfer, which can be arranged by the hotel. But once settled into my garden bedroom looking out to the vines, with a butler happy to attend every whim, I raise a glass in the knowledge the monks would approve. SM www.ledomaine.es

Dressing for Success

Greg Chapman’s Executive tailored clothes in Beverly Hills

G

reg Chapman of Beverly Hills has been dressing celebrities, professional athletes, politicians, and top corporate executives since 1968. Unlike clothing that is mass-produced, purchased off-the-rack, and then altered to fit, Greg Chapman’s Executive Tailored Clothes are individually created for the look and feel of power and success. With his unique approach to making custom clothing, the suits, jackets, pants and other items he tailors perfectly for his demanding and sophisticated clients like no other clothing they have ever worn – not even expensive designer suits. “Historically, men have relied on a tailor to maintain their imagine, just as men today rely on attorneys, bankers, accountants and other professionals for their individual expertise. With the mass production of clothing and pre-manufactured suits, men and women no longer understood how their clothing should fit, or the advantages of projecting an image that indicates their status in class or society” Greg says. “Today, people still judge others by how they appear”, he adds, “and it’s smart to use that to your advantage. My clients, both men and women, understand that designer suits and department store salespeople are no substitute for a tailor who – with wealth a wealth of experience – guides a person through a lifetime of successful business and social advances. There is no substitute for custom made clothing produced by a good tailor.” Greg’s clients agree, “It’s simply impossible to look successful in ill fitting clothes,” says Frederick J. Schwab, a client and former CEO of Porsche NA. “A well tailored suit from Greg Chapman

Invest 1 hour with Greg Chapman and for the rest of your life receive perfect fitting clothing ordered in either in showroom or by phone and shipped directly to you without fittings, alterations or shopping!

is comparably priced to those in a better men’s store, but is carefully designed to fit in all ways, and the quality really shows. Once you wear a Greg Chapman suit you will never go back to the rack.” The Chapman approach, Greg says, “is not to be confused with ‘made-to-measure’ tailoring. With his method, and individual pattern is made that reflects 35 separate measurements for each client as well as his unique posture. “Once a client, you’ll become accustomed to a superior fit, feel, and look to your clothes that will prompt you to replace every item in your wardrobe with custom clothes,” Greg says. “And your pattern is easily altered for weight changes.” Clients can visit Greg’s showroom store in Beverly Hills on S. elfridges is continuing in 2017 with its bright new look at sustainable innovation, through materiality, and the fascinating provenance of the fabrics of fashion. They will share the stories of best future-gazing design and production, while honouring the strengths of traditional textile manufacturing practice, in the U.K. and beyond. Last year, Selfridges’ “Bright” series, an annual retail platform which focuses on new creative talent, turned its attention to sustainability in fashion. In 2017, this commitment to representing the brightest talents is continuing – from across the globe – while advancing the important conversation around developments in sustainable fashion design and retailing. Personal product stories will be framed around eight materials and the best practice for their use and manufacture. These material identities will inspire the “Material World” window scheme, instore and online conversation, retail experience and product line-up. Each material will be represented by a “Bright” ambassador – a young brand or designer leading the way with their responsible, ethical approach to fashion. The Brights will each collaborate with Selfridges’ visual team to design a window on Oxford Street, London, which will explore the material they work with and the story it

BUYING BETTER, INSPIRING CHANGE Buying Better, Inspiring Change is an ongoing, store-wide sustainability programme that empowers buyers to encourage best practice and to drive improvements in responsible, ethical retail practice. During Material World, Selfridges will engage established brands to tell their material stories and position provenance and production at the forefront of fashion retail. “We are a shop selling “stuff ”, so let’s take a closer look at the very materiality that makes it. Material World will examine sustainable textile development, with a focus on social, local and global production stories. The project will explore current problems and their impact as well as presenting solutions and ideas, with honesty and humour, in a retail environment. TRAVEL

I

’m sinking my toes into white sand, as the turquoise Caribbean Sea gently laps centimetres away. A gentle breeze cools my face, and I have rum punch in my hand. Four days of this heaven stretch ahead. And then it happens. Without even consciously making the shift, my mind takes me back to home. I’m thinking about, in no particular order, sewing name labels onto school uniforms, buying worming tablets for the dog, and the realisation I’ve left a bottle of wine in the freezer... I’ve just lost precious minutes of this extraordinary experience. If not for the rum, I’d be absolutely furious. But this trip has a trick up its sleeve. I’m at the beautiful Galley Bay Resort & Spa in Antigua, to learn how to holiday properly. This means learning how to be in the moment - and staying there. For four days. And I will achieve this though wholesome activities like yoga and sketching. (Not by being permanently drunk on rum.) The Elite Island Resorts Group, a collection of beachfront locations in the Caribbean, is offering

8 8 mar c h 2 0 1 7

new activities designed to ensure every moment of your holiday is actually spent holidaying, with the help of relaxation and mindfulness skills that can be used back at home too. In my room, I find a beautiful Color Me Calm coloring book, co-created by Puffin illustrator Adam Stower and existential psychotherapist Dr Nicole Gehl; her private practice is based in London but she spent her formative years on Antigua, and returns regularly. Galley Bay offers the book to guests as part of its reassuringly named ‘Ink & Drink’ sunset coloring sessions, which for me involve settling down on a charming wooden rocking chair on the resort’s beachfront deck with a Coco Loco (a Pina Colada with a twist), and coloring in Stower’s sketches of the various resorts’ views and landmarks. Coloring in for grown-ups is quite the thing at the moment but, as Dr Gehl notes, it’s worthy of more than just a passing fad. Its therapeutic potential is based on it being tactile and creative but not draining, and processdriven rather than outcome-driven. The repetitive motion of coloring in a picture of a gazebo on the beach in front of me is regulating my breathing,

and lowering my adrenaline and cortisol production, apparently. Stower visits Elite resorts throughout the year to guide guests through sketch workshops. He has us focusing our eyes and minds on the palm trees in front of us on the beach and, after two hours of single-minded creative pursuit, we’ve all turned out surprisingly good watercolor impressions of the view. Yes, there’s rum involved, but I post my painting on Facebook to near universal acclaim, a suggestion I frame it, and only a little gentle mirth from my seven-year-old daughter. Also tucked among the pages of the book are Dr Gehl’s tips for simple mindfulness habits, widely recognised by health experts as an effective way of reducing psychological and physiological stress. I grew up near a beach, but Dr Gehl’s suggestion to “listen to the texture and shapes of the sounds present, the soothing rhythm of the waves”, and “observe the silences between sounds” is probably the most relaxing thing I’ve ever heard. And if that’s not enough to add a little Zen to proceedings, I can also recommend her suggestion for the most mindful swim you’ll ever take: “Feel your feet sinking into the sand, the water on your skin. Stretch your arms in front of you and allow yourself to be completely accepted and held by the ocean. Take a deep breath, and glide forwards into the sea, refreshed and renewed.” This holiday is about taking care of the body too, in the form of Floatfit Caribbean classes: 20-minute high-intensity interval training (HIIT), or stretches on Aquaphysical’s Aquabase boards, which are effectively solid floating yoga mats. I try out a session at the St James’s Club & Villas lagoon, down the coast from Galley Bay. It’s at this point that all my carefully curated mindfulness goes straight out the window, in front of a bemused group of tourists, who clearly realized early on that we would be providing the afternoon’s entertainment. It’s about as hard - and fun - as it sounds to exercise on a floating board, but that’s the genius of it. Not only are you putting your body through lunges, squats and planks, but your core is getting a double workout by simply trying to stay out of the water. And then there’s the laughing when the inevitable happens and you topple in. That works the stomach muscles too. With a couple of days left to practise our newfound skills of mindfulness and living in the

moment, we take a catamaran trip down the coast to a spot called Pigeon Point, where we swim ashore and settle on the beach to sketch the view of the bay in shades of blue and green. The last page of my little coloring book has a note on returning home from this paradise and suggests taking just 10 minutes a day to keep this “place of center, this island-like quality within yourself to draw on in times of stress”.

“Dr Gehl’s suggestion to “listen to the texture and shapes of the sounds present, the soothing rhythm of the waves”, and “observe the silences between sounds” is probably the most relaxing thing I’ve ever heard” Dr Gehl suggests that once back home, we “deliberately take the long way round or get into the long queue” and notice the frustration that arises, but then “imagine the feeling as a surfboard on which you’re able to stand and ride it out”. There. Simple. I get home, rescue the wine from the freezer, order the dog’s tablets and get those name tags sewn on school uniforms. And embark on a plan to get back to Galley Bay for a refresher course next summer. Josie Clarke, Press Association was a guest of Hayes & Jarvis www.hayesandjarvis.co.uk

Rites of passage in the Arctic words: Sarah Marshall

A

legacy is something every explorer hopes to leave behind them. But the most memorable traces of James Clark Ross’ presence at Port Leopold, on Somerset Island, are two initials and a year, 1849, carved into a rock on a bleak Arctic beach. The letters, E and I, stand for Enterprise and Investigator, two of many ships employed in hopeless attempts to unravel the mystery of missing Royal Navy officer Sir John Franklin, who’d set out four years previously to claim the fabled Northwest Passage trade route for Britain. It took several decades to find Franklin’s ill-fated vessels: Erebus in 2014 and, more recently, Terror, this past September. With only a few weeks of open water each year, the search posed an enormous challenge to Parks Canada. But fortitude, determination and a spirit of exploration have always shaped the Canadian High Arctic. So too has ice. Once the biggest obstacle for explorers, it’s now melting at a rate too close for comfort and opening up the area to cruise ships. I’ve joined a voyage on the 96-passenger Ioffe, a Russian research vessel whose sister ship, the Vavilov, was involved in the mission to locate Erebus. Staff participants in the ambitious expedition proudly show off commemoration patches sewn onto their uniforms.

9 0 mar c h 2 0 1 7

Completing the Northwest Passage, a shortcut between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, is a tightly scheduled multi-week journey, but I’ve opted for a snapshot of the cruise. Starting in Resolute, I’ll spend seven days sailing through historic straits and a patchwork of barren islands where sheer cliffs and sweeping glaciers conceal abundant but shy wildlife. The residents of Prince Leopold Island show no signs of retiring, though, when we visit the largest seabird colony in the Canadian Arctic. Swooping between serrated ridges, angelic kittiwakes are starry flickers in the indigo heavens. Thick-billed murres huddle along ledges like gossiping old ladies at a bus stop, while fledglings take a tentative sea dip with guidance from their fathers. At every level, it’s ornithological mayhem. Yet a few nautical miles away, the skies are silent. On first impression, the Arctic appears overwhelmingly empty; shapeless plateaus are intimidating, scant vegetation is daunting, and the scale of nothingness is uncomfortably stifling. Even the region’s apex predator is dwarfed by its surroundings.

“Bears of a monstrous bigness,” recorded by John Davis in the late 16th century, were initially mistaken by the British explorer for being sheep. When we enter fog-shrouded Coningham Bay, buttercream dots in the distance arguably resemble fluffy balls of wool. In reality, there’s nothing cuddly about polar bears. Cruising in Zodiacs (inflatable dinghies) we approach downwind so the bears can’t detect our scent. Beluga whale carcasses scatter the shale shoreline; trapped in tides, they’re hunted by both bears and Inuit indigenous people of northern Canada. A large bullish male pulls at blubbery flesh, sniffing the air to deter any foolish hopefuls from joining his table. This is strictly a meal for one. As the wind changes, we’re able to slowly creep within 200 metres of a mother and her yearling cub as they lovingly nuzzle and cavort in a display revealing the killer’s softer side. In total, we clock an impressive 41 bears in just three hours - a wildlife oasis in this vast, polar desert. It’s true: you have to work hard for sightings.

“For Inuit communities unable to afford expensive imports, controlled hunting is a sustainable means of survival”

TRAVEL

Most of these animals are legally hunted by local communities and have an innate fear of humans. At Maxwell Bay, we spend an hour circling in Zodiacs, edging ever closer to a couple of walruses rolling in the surf. On Devon Island, at Dundas Harbour, a herd of musk ox disappears into a ravine as soon as we come ashore. A solitary male lags behind, only because he’s nursing a bleeding harpoon wound. Inuit guide Ted conducts our stealth advance in a manner only a seasoned hunter could execute. In his pocket is a knife made from polar bear bone; it took two years to craft and dry. “Promise me you’ll use this,” his grandfather firmly instructed as he handed the heirloom down. For Inuit communities unable to afford expensive imports, controlled hunting is a sustainable means of survival. It’s also their connection to a cultural heritage spanning hundreds of years. After all, they were the original Arctic explorers. When John Rae came searching for Franklin in

“Underfoot, 450 million yearold coral fossils are evidence these tectonic plates were once at the Equator”

9 2 mar c h 2 0 1 7

1854, the Inuit were his most valuable source of information. They spoke of white men on King William Island, and one even wore the gold braid from a naval uniform as a headband. Startling reports of cannibalism, though, were not well received in Victorian England; Lady Franklin even tried to discredit Rae by asking Charles Dickens to pen damning pamphlets. Although the final chapter of Franklin’s life remains inconclusive, three of his men - possibly the last survivors - were eventually found six feet under at Beechey Island. On the day we visit, raging winds punish the land, beating shale dunes into reluctant submission. Underfoot, 450 million year-old coral fossils are evidence these tectonic plates were once at the Equator. Any warmth has since long gone, and it’s incredible to imagine this as a place of shelter when the sailors overwintered in 1845. We toast their simple graves with a shot of

whisky as marauding grey clouds threaten to steal the remains of our day. Surprisingly, a kayak trip along the island’s sharp rising coastline is less extreme than expected. As kittiwakes weave between threads of mossy granite spooling into the water, I’m struck by how lively the Canadian Arctic can be. Right now, it feels overwhelmingly full. “Pay attention to details and there’s so much to discover,” says assistant expedition leader Eva, a tough, blonde Swede who’s been navigating the Poles for more than two decades. “If I had one voyage left in the world, it would be here,” she says without hesitation. “So much is still unknown.” She’s right. During our seven-day journey, covering more than a thousand nautical miles, I don’t see another ship. In a few years, of course, that will likely change. This summer, the 1,070-person Crystal Serenity sailed through the Northwest Passage, signifying mass tourism is imminent. Whether or not this fragile environment can support so many visitors is questionable. Equally controversial is the darker reality of increased access; the destruction threatened by climate change. Should the sleeping dragon awake, methane frozen in Arctic sea ice could double the amount of carbon monoxide in our atmosphere overnight. A thought more chilling than the biting polar air. Ironically, the route Norwegian Roald Amundsen eventually claimed through the Rae Strait in 1906 is almost irrelevant. Today, there are multiple northwest passages and every year, new possibilities emerge. The opportunity for discovery is undoubtedly growing. And so is our insatiable desire to explore at any cost. home interiors Love the home you have

WORDS: Gabrielle Fagan,

L

et’s face it, our homes, just like our bodies, often leave a lot to be desired, and it’s easy to get dispirited about those lumps and bumps or spaces that don’t match our decor dreams. So what a relief to find ‘imperfect’ interiors - the ones most of us have - can be improved if not transformed, and all it really takes is a shake-up in our attitude. “Most people I know have a long list of reasons why their home isn’t perfect,” says interiors stylist Emily Henson, author of Life Unstyled: How To Embrace Imperfection And Create A Home You Love. “There can be all sorts of reasons for that. Perhaps they’re renting and can’t make their own mark, there isn’t a lot of cash to spare for decorating, the space is too small or there isn’t enough storage. Actually, few of us feel our home fulfils every need - and let’s be honest, that’s a pretty tall order anyway.” Instead of whingeing, Henson advises rebelling, by viewing “those spotless, clutter-free interiors” we envy in magazines and blogs as “a bit of a fiction and an unreal fantasy”, and instead revelling in our own style - flaws and all. “It’s time to celebrate the beauty of imperfect interiors and overhaul your approach, so you see the opportunities rather than the problems. Instead of lamenting the fact you can’t warm yourself by your defunct fireplace, why not fill it with flowers and candles and congratulate yourself on your

9 6 mar c h 2 0 1 7

creativity?” declares Henson, who literally fizzes with energy and positivity. “It’s all about breaking the rules and finding your own way in the world of interiors. I’ve always liked doing things my own way when it comes to my home, and not concerning myself too much with predictions for next year’s trend, or the right way to hang curtains,” she adds. “Many of the home owners I met while writing the book had the guts to dismiss the traditional way of doing things.

One couple painted only half a wall, to expose the patina and beauty of the raw plaster above, while another used old museum archive units for storage. They defied convention, and the result was standout spaces.” Most of us have those bugbears - an unsightly tangle of wires under a desk, a fridge plastered with bills and letters from school, a messy pile of books by the bed - but Henson promises “making the most of what you’ve got, a little re-arrangement, including distracting splashes of color, and upcycling existing items will all help the visual story of your home to be pleasing and interesting”. “Also, in reality, a home’s never ‘done’ because our needs and tastes are always changing,” Henson notes, “so let it evolve, take pleasure in that and you could suddenly realize it’s perfectly suited to you.”

FIX THE FLAWS Here are Henson’s top tips for transforming how you see your ‘imperfect’ home... • Keep a collection of small decorative pots and tins for all the clutter which clogs up surfaces - from coins, batteries and rubber bands, to pens, paper clips and buttons. Once in a while, empty, sort and put away. In the meantime, let it go. • Decoupage is an interesting alternative to painting for bookshelves. Choose pages from books or magazines which you find appeal, wrap the shelves in them, then secure them with PVA glue and varnish for a clean, smooth finish. • It’s so easy to accumulate ‘stuff’ which can be displayed on open shelves or glass-fronted cabinets, but don’t feel you have to have everything on display at once. “I rotate collections as my mood changes and as I acquire new bits, and stash the rest in storage bins.” • Give over one wall to a colorful collection of art. Ensure the display is cohesive by grouping them by theme, color or material. Display boxes of crayons, spools of cotton thread, anything which fits your theme, because variety will add life to a collection. • A room with an interesting paint treatment can get away with a multitude of sins - the eye is distracted from the clutter and drawn to whatever inspired paint job you can think up. Make a feature of stairs, which often tend to be overlooked but are generally the first thing you see when you enter a home. Paint in a rainbow of colors and, for extra embellishment, decorate with stickers, from numerals to words. Alternatively, spray paint the legs of a stool or chair, or create an intricate design on a blank wall. • Refresh jaded furniture by taking it to a local car body shop, which can give it a spray in a jiffy. This will cover chips or damage and give an up-lift to an old piece that might have been destined for the junk yard. • If you’re in a rented home where decorating’s not allowed, give a lift to a dull wall by suspending a single length of wallpaper with an eye-catching design or pattern. Alternatively, wallpaper a large piece of plywood and lean up against a wall, perhaps behind a 9 8 mar c h 2 0 1 7

sofa or bed, for an appealing focal point. • Every home - including children’s rooms - should have an area to tack up anything and everything which inspires, from photos and postcards, to cuttings from magazines or fabric swatches. They’ll offer a snapshot glimpse of your likes. Use a white board or cork board, or paint a square on a wall to designate an area - simply measure an area, mark the outline in masking tape and then paint within. • Wooden crates can be turned into super storage solutions, if given a light sanding and sprayed with paint. Choose bright primary colors for impact, and ramp up the color by painting the floor, a cheap and easy way to conceal scuffed wood or outdated tiles. • In this disposable age, where the lifespan of furniture is getting shorter and shorter, anything we can save from landfill is a bonus. “Creativity before consumption - the pleasure of making something new from something old - gives me huge satisfaction and personalises my home, as I have genuinely unique pieces. In homes I’ve visited, I’ve seen brilliant chunky shelves made from old wooden planks, pendants created by layering decorative papier mache over old metal pendants, which have been left to dry and removed to reveal a distinctive new shade.” Life Unstyled: How To Embrace Imperfection And Create A Home You Love by Emily Henson, photography by Debi Treloar, is published by Ryland Peters & Small, priced $29.95. real estate AGENT COMMENT

Malibu Real Estate: 2016 in Review WORDS: Johnny Steindorff

I

t’s safe to say 2016 was a great year for real estate sales in Malibu... The market saw both stability and growth in comparison to 2015. We saw increases in both average sale price and total volume sold for beach properties, land-side properties, land sales and mobile home sales. From 2015 to 2016 the average sale price of beach properties soared 22% from approximately $6.3m to $8m. The total sales volume also skyrocketed by approximately 30% in 2016. Land-side properties also saw slight increases in average sale price and total volume sold from 2015. Land-side homes also sold slightly faster than the prior year. Land sales also saw slight increases in average sale price & total volume. More interestingly, plots of land sold approximately 2 months faster than in 2015. Mobile homes (Point Dume Club & Paradise Cove) saw a 35% increase in average sale price and an increase of over 40% in total volume from 2015. www.johnnymaliburealestate.com
