previous incarnation and offers an even broader reflection of Ministry of Sound, recreating classical forms of the music that has defined the brand across its three decades with The London Concert Orchestra. The Annual Classical celebrated the legendary dance music compilation The Annual, reimagining some of the biggest dance tracks from the 90s including the likes of The Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim and Dario G with a 50 piece classical orchestra. It sold out two shows at London’s Royal Festival Hall and its debut UK tour in 2019. Ministry of Sound have always been at the forefront of dance music and in 1993 the label Ministry of Sound Recordings was launched, marking the birth of the first global electronic label. Swiftly after this in 1996, Ministry of Sound once again made history as The Annual II sold over a million copies making it the best-selling dance music compilation of all time and have forever been a commanding force in London since its inception, which has been reflected across the city’s most iconic landmarks. As Ministry of Sound reopens to a rapturous welcome in 2021 following Covid-19 closure, the brand once again returns to The O2, London for the largest classical show in its history. It is set to be another monumental moment in Ministry of Sound’s untouchable timeline of success.

REDUNDANCY: YOUR RIGHTS I f you are made redundant and have at least two full years’ continuous service with your employer, you will be entitled to a statutory redundancy payment. You may also be entitled to an enhanced redundancy payment, so it is worth checking your employment contract and staff handbook to see if there are any terms dealing with redundancy. Redundancy is a potentially fair reason for your employer to terminate your employment. For a redundancy dismissal to be fair, your employer must: • have a genuine redundancy situation for example a reduction in workload or a workplace closure; • adopt a fair selection process and redundancy pool; • carry out a consultation with affected employees about the risk of redundancy; and • properly consider alternative employment opportunities or ways to avoid the redundancy. If your employer fails to observe these basic requirements you may have a tribunal claim for unfair dismissal. Usually you will need a minimum of 2 years’ service with your employer to bring this type of claim. There are however, exceptions to this rule; for example, where you are selected for redundancy because of pregnancy or maternity. This would render your dismissal automatically unfair. If you are selected for redundancy on the basis of a protected characteristic (race, sex, marital or civil partnership status, pregnancy and maternity,
18 OCTOBER 2021
disability, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, religion or belief or age), then you may also have a discrimination claim. Employees affected by redundancy whilst on maternity leave are entitled to be offered any alternative roles ahead of other employees. You may also be entitled to an extended period of redundancy consultation through appropriate representatives if you are one of 20 or more employees at one establishment being made redundant, this is known as collective consultation. If an employer fails to comply with collective redundancy obligations when required, each employee affected can claim up to 13 weeks’ pay in the Employment Tribunal. There are other rights that flow from a redundancy situation, for example employees at risk of redundancy can look for alternative work during work time. Your employer may offer you an enhanced redundancy package by way of a Settlement Agreement in return for signing away your statutory rights to bring any claims including for unfair dismissal. You will be required to seek legal advice on the Settlement Agreement, it is customary for employers to contribute towards these legal fees. If you are presented with a Settlement Agreement or consider that you may have been made redundant unfairly, act promptly as there are very strict time limits of less than three months for presenting a tribunal claim.
It is worth checking your employment contract and staff handbook to see if there are any terms dealing with redundancy

The Tunbridge Wells
PUPPETRY FESTIVAL
One of the highlights of Kent’s cultural diary, the Tunbridge Wells Puppetry Festival, returns for its fourth year from 9-17 October 2021.
T
his celebration of all-things puppetry will take place across the town’s iconic venues and open-air civic spaces including The Pantiles, Calverley Grounds, Royal Victoria Place, Trinity Theatre, Assembly Hall, Camden Centre and The Forum. There is a mix of ticketed paid and free performances, workshops and events for the whole family. This puppetry takeover aims to bring and make this beautiful, and often overlooked, artform accessible to local residents and visitors. The centrepiece of the 2021 Festival will be Museum of the Moon, an awe-inspiring touring artwork by UK artist Luke Jerram. Measuring seven metres in diameter, the installation is a fusion of lunar imagery, moonlight and surround sound composition created by BAFTA and Ivor Novello award winning composer Dan Jones. Museum of the Moon will sit elevated in Calverley Grounds from 15 to 17 October. There is free entry to witness this spectacle – an Instagrammers dream!
20 OCTOBER 2021
The Festival programme brings high-quality, innovative puppetry work designed to be enjoyed by audiences of all ages. This year sees commissioned new work, workshops running in collaboration with local charity Mental Health Resources for teenagers, and education workshops in schools with local charity Empathy Action and Russell Dean from local theatre company Strangeface. Amongst the 40 puppetry events there are model making workshops run by Aardman Animations Participants can get creative with clay and discover how to make their own model of one of Aardman’s world-famous characters such as Gromit, Feathers or Shaun the Sheep, which they then get to take home with them. Opening the Festival is local theatre company, Strangeface, performing Eli and the Golem at Trinity Theatre which highlights the very timely topic of the plight of refugees. Straight after the Festival, the show will greet the giant 3.5m Syrian child refugee puppet ‘Little Amal’ in Folkestone as she arrives in the UK for the first time as part of The Walk in support of refugees. www.walkwithamal.org

THE ‘GREATEST FLOWER SHOW ON EARTH’ HIGHLIGHTS Rhs Chelsea Flower Show 2021
I
n its 108-year history, the most prestigious flower show in the world has never been held in the Autumn, but it didn’t dampen spirits after the traditional May 2020 event was cancelled and this year’s deferred because of the pandemic. Once again, it proved to be just as popular and iconic as ever. Always ‘a must visit ’ for The Royal Family, Prince Edward and his wife Sophie, Prince Michael of Kent, Princess Alexandra, Princess Anne and The Princess Royal were all in attendance. A known gardening lover and patron of the RHS, Queen Elizabeth II was notably absent for the first time since 2005, staying at Balmoral until October. There was plenty of star-spotting including Hollywood royalty with Dame Judi Dench officially opening “The Queen’s Green Canopy” show garden, the largest plot at the show, featuring 21 trees and more than 3,500 plants to highlight the importance of trees and woodland. Jim Carter, better known as butler Carson from Downton Abbey thrilled the excited crowds. with Guy Ritchie, Call The Midwife star Helen George, model Alexa Chung, Miranda & Bridget Jones Diary star Sally Phillips, Ben Fogle and Lisa Snowdon among other celebrities.
22 OCTOBER 2021
Our treasured Chelsea Pensioners rubbed shoulders with the mass of horticultural enthusiasts and garden fanatics soaking up the atmosphere that only RHS Chelsea Flower Show can create. Held in the grounds of Royal Hospital Chelsea, the delayed Chelsea Flower Show looked a little different with magnificent flower displays and awe-inspiring show gardens with seasonal tones of autumn. There were a total of 27 gardens with the very best designers showcasing their cuttingedge design and ideas with inspiration, colour and innovation alongside garden rooms and übersheds, spectacular garden sculptures and topiary. This year’s theme for the gardens was climate crisis, and the campaign to plant trees to mark the Queen’s platinum jubilee in 2022.
The Great Pavilion Awash with colour and scents to delight the crowds, some of the world’s finest growers and nurseries returned, showcasing stunning displays, plants for sale and expert advice. There were exquisite plants and flowers and wonderful displays of fruit and vegetables – a paradise for every gardener. Autumn’s harvest was represented with

the biggest display: a fine selection of squashes and pumpkins - with one weighing in at almost 800lb. The giant pumpkin, affectionately named Greta, proved hugely popular at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show. The jewel in the crown was South West in Bloom and Stonebarn Landscapes receiving Best Exhibit amongst a total of 36 Gold Medals.
Gold Medal Winners - Best Show Gardens The overall winner for Best in Show was The Guangzhou Garden, created by first-time designers Peter Chmiel and Chin-Jung Chen who have never put on a display at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show before. It is also the first Chinese garden in the show’s history to take the top prize. Commissioned by the government of Guangzhou, China’s fifth biggest city, the winning eco-garden aimed to inspire global cities to ‘work in harmony with nature’ with a philosophy of reconnecting people and nature, highlighting the benefits of responsible city planning. Also taking away the Gold was The Trailfinders’ 50th Anniversary Garden designed by Jonathan Snow, The M&G Garden designed by Hugo Bugg and Charlotte Harris and The Yeo Valley Organic Garden by Tom Massey. The Florence Nightingale Garden received a Sliver as did Bodmin Jail: 60° East.
Gold Medal Winners – Best Artisan and Sanctuary Gardens Awarded Best In Show, was The Blue Diamond Forge Garden, featuring a thatched working forge in a natural woodland setting. Have you suffered an accident whilst abroad? Y
ou’ve finally managed to travel further afield, but it’s not quite been the holiday you’d hoped for. If you’ve suffered an accident or been injured abroad and it wasn’t your fault, you may still be able to bring a legal claim in the UK courts. Here’s some help on how to do it… Some of the most common accidents abroad are: • Road traffic accidents: whether you’ve been injured as a pedestrian or as a result of a car crash or an accident involving a coach, motorbike or bicycle, for example • Slips, trips and falls: especially common in hotels or on the grounds of resorts. For example, falls near swimming pools or from balconies; accidents while boarding or leaving an aeroplane or train • Accidents at sea: cruise ship and boating accidents, water sports or scuba diving. What evidence do I need to make a claim? Collecting evidence of where and how an injury occurred is crucial. Ideally, you should: • seek and keep a record of any medical attention • take photographs and video evidence of the location of the accident and of your injuries • gather contact details of witnesses • keep your own report/trail of information for your solicitor • keep receipts of all related expenses e.g. medical bills, taxis, accommodation costs incurred as a direct result of the accident • collect doctors’ names who treat you and the address of any clinic/hospital Can I make a claim if I am on a package holiday? Yes. If your accident is the fault of the tour operator, you may be assisted by the ‘Package Holidays’ Regulation. However serious the injury, it’s important to make your tour operator aware or report it to a local representative ASAP and seek legal advice as soon as practically possible. 24 OCTOBER 2021

TOMORROW’S WORLD Katharine Woodcock, Headmistress of Sydenham High School GDST, takes the positives from the pandemic.
A
s we head towards what we hope is the light at the end of what has been, at times, an extremely dark tunnel and into a new world that reflects some kind of normalcy, we have to be thankful for what this time has taught us. The importance of community, values and caring for one another. The new ways in which we have adapted and evolved: technology at the forefront of much of what we do, balanced with a deeper focus on mindfulness and staying active away from devices. Innovative teaching and more efficient working practices has meant that ahead of the new term in September, our school and its pupils are perhaps in a better position to thrive than ever before. As it stands, our pupils have the best chance in nearly two years of having an uninterrupted year of learning and being around their peers. Mental health has become a bigger priority across the board, and we welcome athletes role- modelling the importance of mental fitness alongside physical health. Something we have long heralded. Though moving towards familiar behaviours and routines at the end of last term helped to provide stability, the necessary adaptability required by the pandemic has fostered key skills of resilience and problem-solving which will stand pupils in good stead for the future. If another lockdown occurs, our pupils are well equipped to deal with, and overcome, the implications that come with that. The foundations of wellbeing at Sydenham High come from the three pillars of Body, Mind and Soul. Interwoven into 26 OCTOBER 2021
all that we strive to achieve for the wellbeing of our whole community, when the pandemic hit, we used these pillars to ensure that we were truly looking after our mental and physical health, adapting our co- curricular programme so that it could be just as beneficial in a home environment. Another positive change brought about by the pandemic is the transition to and embracing of digital processes. Teachers have been creative and designed innovative solutions to provide outstanding learning despite the constraints of remote teaching and virtual experiences of the school site provided a new perspective for visitors. These are things that we can assess, adjust and take forward into the new academic year and beyond. Throughout the peak of the pandemic our pupils learned to “keep finding joy in small things and remember for every negative situation, if you look hard enough, you can always find a positive!”, which is a lesson we all can learn. It’s been said countless times but the past 18 months have not been easy for any of us, especially not for the children whose learning and childhoods have been interrupted. But now is the time to look forward. Now is the time to roll up our sleeves and get back to work, building something better than what came before. The summer holidays provided a time for rest, relaxation and reflection and enabled all facets of the school to be able to go full steam ahead come September. The new term brings with it something of a new beginning and at Sydenham High School, we are more than ready for it.
We have to be thankful for what this time has taught us. The importance of community, values and caring for one another

Which extra-curricular activities will look best on a UCAS application? Dr Kirsten Dickers, Head of Higher Education and Careers at Ashford School tells us more.
I
n nine years as an admissions tutor, this was probably the question I was asked most often. I hope that my answer came as a relief: UK universities, particularly the more selective ones, don’t base their selection decisions on extracurricular activities. Instead, they look for supercurricular engagement, or evidence that applicants are exploring the subject they want to study beyond the confines of the school curriculum. To be a competitive applicant, this is what students should focus on. The good news is that it’s easy to do. There are numerous ways to research topics that they find interesting - reading, following the news, listening to podcasts, watching documentaries, MOOCs, essay competitions, olympiads and other problem-solving challenges, relevant work experience, attending university webinars, taster days and summer schools. There are qualifications such as the EPQ and CREST awards, which help students develop valuable research skills at the same time as learning more about a subject of their choice. Universities stress that quality is better than quantity, in the sense that they would rather see a few things done thoroughly than a long list of quite superficial engagement. I normally advise students
28 OCTOBER 2021
to focus on three or four main ideas in a personal statement, demonstrating reflection on each: what is their opinion of what they have read? How does it extend their learning? Has it changed their view, and why? What questions does it leave them with? Academia is all about people following their own ideas and enthusiasms, and this is what they want to see applicants doing. Admissions tutors will favour genuine academic engagement over name-dropping and prestige. Extra-curricular activities are an excellent way of developing skills and qualities such as resilience, self-motivation and teamwork. The message to students is to do activities because they enjoy them and want to develop these skills, not just because they are hoping for extra credit in the selection process. Think about why you are applying for a particular degree course. What excites you about it, and what topics are you most looking forward to studying? Focus on exploring these ideas independently and in depth. Find your own enthusiasms, and that will come across in your personal statement and at interview – and equally importantly, you will hopefully have a more enjoyable and less stressful time in Sixth Form.

LONDON RESTAURANT FESTIVAL 2021 Throughout October 2021
I
n a celebration of the UK’s vibrant restaurant industry, London Restaurant Festival (LRF) in partnership with American Express has returned for its 13th year with a line-up of over 50 exclusive culinary events. With the restaurant industry back on its feet, this year’s festival sees the return of the muchloved restaurant-hopping tours showcasing the city’s finest talents, alongside tasting menus, masterclasses and ‘Top Ten Cuisines’ events. Restaurants, with many of the capital’s leading chefs and restaurants are committed to take part, including Michel and Emily Roux at Caractère, Russell Norman at Trattoria Brutto, Mayfair, Tom Aikens at Muse, Nieves Barragan at Sabor, Ekstedt at The Yard and an evening celebrating the Nordic and Japanese creativity Café Biltmore, Mei Ume, Amaranto, Wild Honey, The Melusine, Radici, at The Pantechnicon. New to the festival this year is an event series ‘Binge’ – including a live TV recording of The Jonathan Ross Show at Television Centre, the home of British Television. Exclusive tasting menus are available across the city’s hottest restaurants, including Daffodil Mulligan, Barrafina and La Dame de Pic London with Rémy Martin pairings. A feasting menu is

being hosted at Smokestak, while well-loved Indian small plates restaurant Kricket hosts a ‘Greatest Hits’ menu of its classic dishes This year the festival is partnered with independent Scottish brewery Innis & Gunn to provide beer pairings for a variety of events at some of the most fashionable spots across the capital such as Adam Handling at the Frog, Bombay Brasserie and E&O in Notting Hill. They are offering an at-home masterclass for those unable to attend the festival in person, in the form of a chocolate and beer masterclass in collaboration with Paul A Young. Simon Davis, who founded the festival, says “London Restaurant Festival is a city-wide celebration of London restaurants and has been for the last 12 years. It stands as a key pillar among dining events both for restaurants and restaurant go-ers across the city.” Simon founded the festival

with Fay Maschler in 2009. It was established to celebrate and reflect the phenomenally vibrant London restaurant scene through exclusive experiences that inspire people to visit as many restaurants as possible throughout October. Following on from its success at LRF’s Summer Edition, October sees a specially curated programme of events available exclusively for American Express Platinum and American Express Centurion Cardmembers. These separate ‘festivals within a festival’ feature events including Endo at the Rotunda, Kol and Coal Office, with the chef cooking right in front of the lucky guests. For those looking to celebrate the city’s restaurants in the ultimate fashion, LRF is hosting two Ultimate Gastronomic Weekends. Including an overnight stay at Four Seasons Hotel London at Park Lane or Four Seasons Hotel London at Ten Trinity Square and lunch hosted by Monica Galetti at Mere. This year, the festival is also hosting a run of one-night-only events, including a beef wellington masterclass at Heddon Street Kitchen, a teppanyaki masterclass at Ginza St James’s, and two whisky-paired Tasting Menus at Native and Nutbourne. ‘Glorious Game’ dinners pay tribute to game birds and wildfowl, with one-off dinners at Lyle’s and Corrigans, while a series of ‘White Truffle Experiences’ celebrate the ‘diamond’ of the kitchen through menus curated by London’s best truffle connoisseurs at the exclusive restaurants, Novikov and Amaranto – paired with Italicus
Spritz cocktails. Ticket holders have the opportunity to embark on a ‘Champagne Gourmet Odyssey’, enjoying a six-course lunch, spread across three of London’s finest restaurants in Mayfair and Belgravia: paired with Champagne. Guests can enjoy meals at the likes of Jamavar, Café Biltmore, Enoteca Turi and Mossiman’s. LRF continues its successful partnership with OpenTable to offer Festival Menus as part of the month-long celebration. OpenTable and LRF hand pick a selection of London’s top restaurants to offer diners access to special menus throughout the month of October. After 18 really tough months for the restaurant industry, it is great news that we can show our commitment and support to London’s restaurants. With over 200 restaurants participating across LRF Events and Festival Menus, the line-up is a real reflection of the wonderful diversity of London’s restaurant scene” says Festival Director Chris Wright.

BACKSTAGE BEAUTY: Amp up your make-up look inspired by the autumn/winter catwalks Model backstage at Bibhu Mohapatra AW21 catwalk show, make-up by Nars
FELINE FLICK Black winged eyeliner was everywhere during fashion month. Razor-sharp feline flicks were painted with precision at Chanel, Schiaparelli, Valentino, Erdem and more. The only question is: how dramatic do you want to go? To create a major feline moment, you’ll need a jet black liquid liner – and a steady hand. For a more subtle alternative, use a sharp liner pencil to add a flick at the outer corner of the eye – this look helps to elongate small or round eyes.

This season is all about subtle glamour, says Katie Wright.
P
erusing the faces of models on the autumn/winter catwalks, it feels like the make-up perfectly reflects the mood of the season right now – and don’t forget, these shows took place some seven months ago. As our social lives get back on track, and sales of colour cosmetics rebound after the lockdown slump, the overarching AW21 theme of wearable glamour suits the sense of cautious optimism so many of us are feeling at the moment. This season’s key make-up trends don’t reinvent the wheel. Instead, they offer a modern, sophisticated take on timeless classics…

BOLD LIPS Scarlet lips never go out of style, of course. But this season, why not try a darker berry hue inspired by the saturated shades seen at Molly Goddard, Bibhu Mohapatra and Erdem. Matte cherry red, burgundy or merlot tones look beautiful with a dewy complexion, nude eye makeup and lots of black mascara.
SMOKY EYES When we talk about ‘smoky eye’ make-up, we usually mean a variety of eyeshadow shades blended together. But this season’s most stunning

eye looks, as seen at Dior and Chanel, are literally smoke coloured. Black eyeshadow might be a bit daunting, but the beauty of a charcoal hue is it suits all eye colours; you just need to tailor the application (if you have small eyes don’t go too heavy), blend it out so there are no heavy lines, and finish with volumising mascara (or false lashes).

COOL SHIMMER Metallic eye make-up was another big trend, and while the two-tone, glittering gold and silver look at Prada (meaning one colour on each eyelid) might not be for everyone, the subtle shimmer at Mark Fast feels fresh and flattering. How to find your perfect metallic match? Choose a soft eyeliner or liquid shadow in a cool tone (like icy pastel blue, frosted pink or mint) that contrasts with your eye colour.

Headmasters Full Head Simplicity
“Overall colour has certainly made a lockdown comeback whether in permanent shades or all over glossing. This technique is especially good for deep brunettes and the colour trend of Blue black for an on-trend intense shine.”
Embracing the Grey “Grey hair is also making a come-back this season as many used the lockdown time to go back to natural. The trick to avoid the matt dull effect tones associated with greying hair is to add subtle pearly white tones, brightening lights or an all-over clear gloss take your grey to the next level”.
Colour for Curls Textured hair expert, Nicole Iroh says “A big colour trend for curls and coils this season is about using hair colour to enhance natural texture and make curls pop with Curl contouring and Curl Clouding. Top colour choice is Honey blonde to contrast to darker shades but for those new to colour opting for a more copper, cinnamon tone gives a lovely warm glow to your style.”
“Whichever fashion camp you fall into, there will be a colour trend for you! We have noticed that like the fashion catwalks our clients are falling into two camps – those who embraced a natural feel to their hair through lockdown and now want to keep it and those who have had enough and want to return to glamour with more high maintenance looks”

We have noticed that like the fashion catwalks our clients are falling into two camps – those who embraced a natural feel to their hair through lockdown and now want to keep it and those who have had enough and want to return to glamour with more high maintenance looks”, says Barton.
Bold Balayage “Balayage continues its domination of colour trending but with a rise in bold colour choices through the lightened lengths of hair include raspberry, blueberry and violet tones with clients opting for toners that add depth of colour.” 44 84 O OO BB E RE R 2 0 22 10 2 1 OCCTT

utumn is officially here, meaning it’s time to pack away our strappy dresses, shorts and sandals, and get ready to bundle up in cosy knitwear and layers and pull on our favourite boots. While some winter wardrobe staples can (and should) be worn year after year, if you’re looking for one key piece to update your style for the new season, you can’t go wrong with a handbag. A chic bag in the right colour will complement almost any outfit – and now is the perfect time to go shopping for a new bag, because the high street is awash with cool, catwalk-inspired arm candy…
TOTE BAGS Big bags are back in a big way, which is handy if you’re returning to the office and need a roomy tote to ferry your laptop/lunchbox/gym kit/all of the above to and from work. Take your cue from Gucci, Dior and Gabriela Hearst with a super-size top handle tote, or grab a squishy leather holdall to cradle under your arm like the models on the Fendi and Sportmax runways. 2 OB BE 4 06 6 OOCCTTO E RR 220 02 21 1

FLUFFY BAGS There was an explosion of all things fluffy on the AW21 catwalks, from DSquared2’s shearling hobo bag, to Burberry’s huge, fuzzy tote and JW Anderson’s bright, tasselled creations. A cream faux fur or shearling shoulder bag is the ideal match for a classic camel coat.

QUILTED BAGS You’ve got two choices when it comes to quilted bags for autumn. The utility trend is still in full force, with puffed-up cross-body and belt bags in neutral hues. Inspired by the Chanel and Burberry collections, classic leather handbags with chain straps, that can be worn long or short, are an elegant choice for day or evening.
“A boxy, zip-up crossbody in soft leather offers the best of both worlds: big enough to hold all your essentials, without weighing you down”

Suit up in style:
Fashion experts reveal the catwalk-inspired looks they’re loving this season. By Katie Wright.
Three major tailoring trends to try
T
Bright and bold
ailoring has gone truly mainstream this season. Inspired by celebs and Instagram style stars, two-piece suits and edgy jackets have replaced summer dresses as the hottest outfits to be seen in right now. And the craze is set to continue as we head into autumn. Suit up for summer and beyond with three of the biggest tailoring trends, according to fashion experts…
“Highly saturated colours are a much-needed dopamine hit that represent fun, joy and liveliness,” says stylist Roberta Lee, who is currently working with sustainable clothing platform, Dayrize. “Personally I love to see more colour – after nearly two years of a lockdown life, colour has been a huge mood booster for my wardrobe. In fact, I’d go as far as saying it’s been a lifesaver – long may it continue!” There are no rules when it comes to choosing bright tailored pieces, the trend encompasses everything from blazers and tailored dresses, to trousers and shorts. Lee says: “Explore what’s missing in your wardrobe, as now would be the time to invest – these bright pops of colour won’t hang around for long.”
Short suits “Short suits, to me, exude quiet confidence,” says stylist and brand strategist, Mija Knezevic. “You look put together and stylish without being too over the top.” For an elegant take on the trend, she recommends teaming a two-piece suit with a silk shirt, to give “a sense of sophistication and prestige. In this case, a pair of classy black, nude, or white flats would fit the occasion.” For more of a casual look, try “sneakers and a loose blouse. A patterned short suit would stand out with a pair of white chunky sneakers and a graphic T-shirt tucked underneath the blazer.”

WENDY WIDE LEG TROUSERS NATURAL, £55, AVAILABLE FROM MONSOON
STAR BY JULIEN MACDONALD FITTED PINK BLAZER, £69, AVAILABLE FROM FREEMANS
Oversized separates “Autumn/winter for women is focused on tailoring that plays with angular silhouettes, with comfort still factored in,” says Lee, which is why loose, relaxed cuts are a key trend. Knezevic says: “Oversized blazers are a new and innovative rendition to the classic form-fitted, tailored blazer. You could use the blazer as a dress and place a belt at the waist to create a nice shape line to the garment. Biker shorts, as well as leggings, would be a good way to dress down the garment.”

n most cases, the splash back in a kitchen comprise of ceramic or porcelain tiles but there’s no hard and fast rules as to what size or style you should use. So long as long as they are hard wearing and easy to keep clean, and off course complement your kitchen design style One of the most popular style of tiles for splashbacks are metro or subway tiles thanks to their timeless design, and the fact that they are available in a large of colours and designs. Stone effect ceramic tiles are also very popular and offer a maintenance free alternative natural stone. The only limit to your creativity when choosing splashback tiles is your imagination! DREAM DOORS

NEW LIFE FOR OLD KITCHENS
ream Doors was established 20 years ago with a unique proposition to replace kitchen doors and worktops. Our award-winning service has helped us grow into a trusted brand and to this day, we continue to provide the same service, along with high quality kitchen appliances from stylish brands, such as Neff and Bosch. As kitchen experts we provide designs and finishes from the most modern to the more traditional styles and colours. Thanks to our extensive range of kitchen doors, worktops and appliances, we can help you fully customise your kitchen to your ideal requirements. Our products are made to measure, meaning we can create everything to your specific requirements. Whether it’s modern, traditional or something in between, we’re guaranteed to have the products for you. This customer had an old fossil fuel Aga and wanted to update it to a cleaner model. This then made them want to change their doors, worktops, flooring, reconfigure some of the units and add some new lighting. After much deliberation on their style and colour they finally decided on a Pale cream door with Aries handles to brighten and modernise the space. The clever rearrangement of the fridge gave them more work surface, which is now well lit with
the new under cabinet lights in a warm glow. They finished the room off by overlaying the floor with Karndean paliocore in Murlo, which helped to lift the light in the room even further. The couple were absolutely delighted with the transformation, and it is evident from the photographs why!

FIVE REASONS TO
GO FIBREGLASS
Looking for the highest quality swimming pool? Think Fibreglass.
W
hen considering installing a swimming pool, there are many factors that will dictate whether they choose fibreglass, concrete, or vinyl liner. Although each type of pool has its own pros and cons, in this article we would like to focus on five benefits of choosing a fibreglass pool for your home… Fibreglass Pools are Easy to Install During the installation process, both concrete and vinyl liner pools can be affected by changes in temperature, rain and other weather elements, but with fibreglass, the installation is rarely affected by these unpredictable factors due to the fibreglass shell being constructed off site. Fibreglass Pools are Low Maintenance It has become an accepted fact in the swimming pool industry that fibreglass pools are easier to maintain, especially when compared to a concrete swimming pool. One of the great things about fibreglass pools is the finish, a smooth and shiny surface that makes for easy cleaning and minimal maintenance. Algae (which any pool owner knows can be a menace if not treated regularly with chemicals) is less likely to be able to stick to the smooth gel coat surface, which makes it less of a nuisance. In addition, gel coating is skin-friendly, if you rub against it while you’re swimming or exercising, you will glide smoothly over its surface, and for places where you need to grip, like stairs and walkways, there is a non-skid application. Fibreglass is very hardy in the face of UK weather conditions, so it will stand the test of time, very much like the hull of a boat. 72 OCTOBER 2021
Fibreglass Pools are Environmentally Friendly Fiberglass pools are very thermally efficient, which means your pool will hold a steady temperature and will cost you less to heat. You’ll also buy fewer chemicals than a traditional pool requires, which is good for your pocket environment and your body. Fibreglass Pools have a long Lifespan Fibreglass lasts – that is a fact that shouldn’t be missed. Unlike liner pools that will gradually deteriorate over time, this isn’t the case with fibreglass pools. Fibreglass pools are known to last decades and still look as good as they did when they were first installed. The warranties available for these pools reflect this level of commitment and faith in the product. Fibreglass Pools are easily installed If you have limited access to get the pool into your preferred space, this is not a problem, pools made out of fibreglass can be delivered and then craned to the site. What’s more, fibreglass pools are very quick install, you’ll be swimming, exercising, and relaxing in your own within days.

ntroducing Modern Tones, a collection of eight wood stains curated and developed for refined luxury brand L.Ercolani by Christian Møller Andersen. Echoing ercol founder Lucian Ercolani’s heartfelt calling to create, L.Ercolani is firmly rooted in a century of design and innovation. Combining ercol’s past and future, L.Ercolani is the new home for Ercolani’s classics, in addition to original works, all crafted by hand at the heritage manufacturer’s Princes Risborough factory. Honouring the pure, elemental beauty of wood, Modern Tones breathes new life into Ercolani’s mid-century icons, with the rich palette lending a tactile warmth. With its delicate, transparent finish, Modern Tones showcases the wood’s natural grain, whilst referencing the bold richness of the Modernist movement. Colours range from earthy Vintage Red and Ochre to Original, which pays homage to the finishes used in Ercolani’s day. “As we move into our 101st year of business, we are proud to launch a new British brand inspired by my great-grandfather. Lucian Ercolani believed in making furniture that was modern and honest, designed and crafted to be cherished for generations. His pieces from the 1950s inform our DNA, but much like he always looked to the future, we too are looking to create a new collection, combining archival and original designs. The new colours speak to the future, while recognising and celebrating our legacy of well-built furniture, imprinted with our family’s intrinsic understanding of wood,” explains Henry Tadros, Director, L.Ercolani. lercolani.com

Is your
ROOF
SECURE?
Is your flat roof ready to cope with the rain this Autumn?
A
re you one of 70% of home owners in the UK incorporating a mineral felt flat roof ? Mineral felt generally has a slow breakdown often allowing water ingress to cause unnecessary damage before anything can be visibly detected within the home. A failing roof & the warning signs- look for signs of cracking around the roof edge, pipes, up-stands and roof lights etc. Beware of blisters on the roof surface, during colder months they can become brittle and crack. The home-owner should also be made aware that Insurance Companies will no longer accept any liability for any external or internal damage caused by a leaking flat roof which is over 10 years old. Further very important information: - all property owners please be aware when a flat roof is replaced there are building regulations that the homeowner and the contractor must comply with. Failure to comply can leave the homeowner open to major problems when selling the property. In 1999, High-Tech Roofing first introduced the most advanced flat roof technology to the homeowner. Protan, based in Norway, has a pedigree in the design and manufacture of waterproofing materials dating back to 1939, and producing the first roofing membrane in 1971. Protan is our preferred PVC single-ply flat roofing system and will cope with all climates, millions of square metres are installed here and abroad with a proven track record stretching over four decades. Protan is predominantly an architect-specified roofing system, winning many awards serving the very competitive commercial sector. 76 OCTOBER 2021

n the late 1970’s George fitted his first wardrobe in his house in Earlshall Road, Eltham. Not long after that, his neighbour saw it and asked if he would build one in their home. It wasn’t long before 6 people he didn’t know in his road saw his work and came knocking on his door asking him if he would fit furniture for them. Enquiries continued to come in and George juggled this side-line alongside his full time job in the newspaper industry until in 1980, he established GPM Designs Ltd. Today George is retired, but Adam, his son, still continues the family tradition of individually made to measure bedroom furniture, tailored to the customer’s specific requirements. All furniture is truly made to measure, not adapted to fit. GPM Designs is your one stop shop for every conceivable size and shape of fitted made to measure bedroom furniture; we also fit offices and living rooms. With grapes picked at night for extra freshness and to beat the Aussie heat, this deftly blended trio of chardonnay, marsanne and viognier offers a sunbeam of flavour, with layers of zingy, stone fruits, hints of pineapple and a tiny trace of creamy citrus and spice. Delicious with autumnal creamy chicken recipes, scallops and seafood pasta. Very enjoyable, even though the label’s a bit out-there!

A Fresh Approach to LOCAL FRUIT & VEG In Petts Wood you’ll find a cornucopia of delights reaching far beyond your typical greengrocer. Clare Disano tells us what you can expect when you visit.
A
wholesaler of fruit and veg since 2005, the owner of Jasmine, Ahmet Karabacak, has recently opened a new store in Orpington. The quality of food on offer is testament to his passion for the business. As someone who loves cooking and trying new fruits and flavours, Ahmet’s enthusiasm is obvious in the store. Having started out on the London markets, he is now able to broaden the goods he can offer with his stylishly decked-out shop. While fruit and veg is his mainstay, he can now also offer a range of fish, meat, dairy produce and bread but, in the words of a major British food chain, “This is no ordinary produce”. Ahmet has worked incredibly hard to introduce new products from lots of new high-end suppliers. With award-winning smokeries, farm produce from Hook & Son’s organic dairy range and soughdough bread from the oldest bakery in London (Ahmet sends his own driver as it is so important to them), you really can expect the best quality foods. The store is a modern take on a traditional greengrocers, with shelves full of wooden crates bursting with colour. You will find more crates stacked outside at the entrance, along with a farm-style cart, offering up fresh and exciting wares. Obviously, you can also expect to see your 90 OCTOBER 2021
everyday produce, like milk and a range of scrumptious-looking breads, but the selection of fruit and veg is vast with several varieties of each type available - there are over ten varieties of tomatoes! I think you would be hard-pressed to not find what you are after, but the choice on offer is what makes this a cut above the rest. While there is currently no delivery or online service, Ahmet hopes to introduce these in time. He has vision and also wants to expand in the future. Located on Station Square, the store is open and inviting with plenty of space to move around. Jasmine offers you an enjoyable shopping experience that is a little different from the rest, with great quality produce at the heart of their business.

RESTAURANT REVIEW
AKSULAR, High Street, Orpington Food Editor, and owner of The Cooking Shed cookery school, Regan Anderton shares her top picks for the best local restaurants. For more reviews, recipes and cooking tips visit www.thecookingshed.com Ambiance We visited early evening on a sunny Saturday where we saw lots of people enjoying the new outdoor space. Inside, tables and a DJ stand were being set up for special celebrations. The open kitchens take centre stage with charcoal grills and a display area of deliciously fresh food.
Service Staff were cheery and helpful. We were greeted at the door with a smile, and taken to our table where the manager talked us through some of his favourite dishes from the house specials.
Food Aksular offer authentic Turkish food cooked on traditional charcoal grills. There’s a crowd pleasing menu made up hot and cold Meze dishes, steaks, casseroles, and seafood. We opted for the mixed hot meze platter for two to start, with halloumi, sigara boregu (light cigar shaped rolled filo pastry filled with feta cheese & parsley), calamari, falafel, and Sucuk (a spicy traditional Turkish beef sausage). The platter arrived with hot flatbreads, a garlic dip, and nicely warm chilli sauce. Everything was super tasty, well cooked, and portions were generous for sharing. For main, our favourite was the Lamb Kofte Iskender - diced lamb kofte served on a bed of bread and tomato topped with a thick, creamy yogurt and finished with a drizzle of melted butter. The lamb was melt in the mouth tender, and full of flavour. The dish was rich, sumptuous, and so filling that we couldn’t handle a dessert…although the menu of homemade Baklava, Kunefe, and Sticky Toffee Pudding did try its best to tempt us!
Drink The bar has a great selection of cocktails, wines, beers, and spirits. The house Turkish red was reasonably priced, and accompanied the flavour of the lamb well. 105 High Street, Orpington, Orpington, Kent BR6 0LG Tel: 01689 898 000 92 OCTOBER 2021

Leave the salmon to marinate at room temperature for 10 minutes, then put the tray in the oven and bake the salmon for 20 minutes, until opaque and cooked through. 4. Meanwhile, make the cucumber salad. Mix together the lime juice, the cucumber ribbons and both the herbs. Season with the salt and set aside. 5. Once the salmon is ready, smother the flat breads in mango chutney, top with gorgeous flakes of pink salmon and cover with your cucumber salad. I like to add an extra kick with some slices of chilli, and texture with extra-crunchy Bombay mix. That’s it. Fold and eat.

RESTAURANT REVIEW
D’Angelo Bar & Restaurant, High Street, Orpington
Food Editor, and owner of The Cooking Shed cookery school, Regan Anderton shares her top picks for the best local restaurants. For more reviews, recipes and cooking tips visit www.thecookingshed.com Ambiance We visited on a Tuesday evening when most other restaurants in the high street were quiet, but D’Angelo had a nice buzzy clientele of regulars enjoying a mid-week dinner. Patio heaters outside, and a long bar upon entering with touches of Italian wood furnishings made it feel instantly like being on holiday.
Service All of the staff that we spoke to on the evening were an absolute delight. Great, efficient service, with humour, care, and knowledge.
Food D’Angelo offers a mix of Italian and French inspired dishes, from Buillabaisse, or Bruschetta starters, to Risotto’s and Cote de Boeuf for main. We started with the Burrata and heritage tomato salad. A beautifully creamy ball of ooziness drizzled with basil infused olive oil and topped with pretty dried chilli strings that looked like strips of saffron. For main, the seafood linguine stole the show. The fish and seafood here is bought fresh every day from high-end suppliers at Billingsgate…and it shows! Beautifully fresh and perfectly cooked soft squid, large king prawns, and plump juicy mussels served on a bed of fresh pasta coated in a rich silky tomato and basil sauce. Portion sizes were very generous, so we opted to share the strawberry cheesecake for dessert - topped with a French macaron and sharp strawberry coulis. A lovely end to a delicious meal.
Drink The bar has a great selection of cocktails - both traditional, and seasonal. Wines, beers, and spirits. To start, we tried the Glitter Garden. A sweet and refreshing cocktail of gin, saint german, fresh lemon, apple juice and elderflower. A glass of Italian Chardonnay Grillo was perfect to accompany the seafood linguine. 105 High Street, Orpington, Orpington, Kent BR6 0LG Tel: 01689 898 000 96 OCTOBER 2021
