MacConnal-Mason Gallery has been established for
over one hundred and twenty years spanning four generations. Based in London, although with roots in the north of England, MacConnal-Mason have two galleries in Duke Street, St. James’s, the heart of London’s Art and Antique district and moments from the Ritz, St. James’s Palace and the renowned Clubs, Boodles, Whites, The Athenaeum and the Carlton Club. MacConnal-Mason present the finest paintings and sculptures of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries over six floors of exhibition space. From Pre-Raphaelite and High Victorian paintings, through Impressionist paintings, represented by Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Eugène Boudin to Modern British works by Laurence Stephen Lowry, Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth, and Marine paintings by Montague Dawson, the gallery’s exhibit a continually changing collection of works.
MacConnal-Mason have been instrumental in forming some of the most important collections of Fine Art in the United Kingdom and abroad. Being at the forefront of the Art Market for many decades, the gallery has dealt with many of the most important Nineteenth Century European paintings to appear on the market, including the record breaking “The Finding of Moses” by Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, that subsequently sold for a sum approaching thirty-six million dollars.
The ethos of the gallery has always been, and remains the case today, to source the finest paintings and sculptures, be they by artists of the Nineteenth or Twentieth Century and to make them available to the gallery’s clients and museums. The most important and principal reason for acquiring a painting or sculpture should be that it resonates with the viewer, causes an emotional reaction and one that will last. Ideally the acquisition will prove to be a form of wealth management, but it is the desire to own and enjoy a painting that is paramount, again, ideally one will be living with this for a long period of time. As previously mentioned, MacConnal-Mason have six floors of exhibition space in St. James’s but in addition, have always been delighted to show paintings at the home of clients and potential clients. In the present circumstances, this has also included gardens, garages and greenhouses! The process serves a useful purpose, it can be difficult to visualise a painting ‘in situ’ when seen hanging on a gallery wall several miles or several hundred miles away from home. To hang the painting ‘in situ’, at no obligation of course, is a means of facilitating the whole decision making process.
Lighting is a further matter on which the gallery is more than happy to advise, all paintings need light, whether it be natural light, spotlights or frame mounted picture lights, circumstances and position dictate the solution and the gallery has vast experience in such matters. As one of the foremost galleries in the United Kingdom, MacConnal-Mason exhibit widely, at prestigious art fairs in London, and abroad at the world renowned The European Fine Art Fair in Maastricht, perhaps the largest and finest Art and Antiques Fair worldwide. In New York, along with London, the centre of the Art Market, and home to a myriad of collectors, the gallery exhibits at the Seventh Regiment Armory, a spectacular and iconic building on Park Avenue. The gallery frequently produce catalogues of recent acquisitions to accompany the fairs.
MacConnal-Mason also organise exhibitions inhouse, one of the most significant such exhibitions being what was described as the finest exhibition of works by L. S. Lowry in the past twenty years, this in the same year as the major Lowry retrospective at Tate Britain in 2013, for which the gallery organised the loan of one of the principal works, which was also included in the Macconnal Mason exhibition.
The gallery has a wealth of experience under the Chairman, David L. Mason, O.B.E., along with Directors, David M. Mason, Marcus Halliwell, Sue Palmer and Gallery Manager, Richard Pikesley. They can muster approaching two hundred years of art market experience, connoisseurship, and present day market intelligence, and above all have a true passion for their subject.

Sir Alfred Munnings KCVO, PPRA

Lord Astor’s High Stakes with Sir Gordon Richards up at Newmarket Sir Alfred Munnings (1878-1959) was perhaps the foremost painter of equine subjects since the eighteenth century painter, George Stubbs. The present work, High Stakes, is the most important in a series of paintings of The Start on which Munnings embarked in the early 1940’s, and continued until his death. Here the beautiful setting is Newmarket, and unlike the majority of the series, the horse, jockey and owner are all named. High Stakes was by Lord Derby’s 1933 Derby winner, Hyperion, out of the 1929 Oaks winner Pennycomequick. Sir Gordon Richards was one of the finest ever jockeys, and along with A.P. McCoy, the only jockey to be knighted; he was flat racing champion twenty six times. Lord Astor was a renowned owner and a great patron of Munnings. Edward Brian Seago RWS, RBA Boats in the Harbour, Dieppe
Edward Seago (1910-1974) was a keen sailor, and a friend of the Duke of Edinburgh, himself no mean sailor, he accompanied him on trips to Hong Kong and Antarctica on board The Royal Yacht, Britannia. Seago’s first boat Endeavour, served as a floating studio, his second, Capricorn is the green hulled vessel in the above work. Seago sailed frequently to the Continent, often painting the Port at which he moored. Seago was an extremely popular painter in his lifetime; lengthy queues would form at the gallery opening of an exhibition such that tickets would be issued to prospective buyers, who would be limited to one painting each. Looking east along the Rio del Ognissanti , beyond Ponte Trevisan, we see Santa Maria del Rosario on the Zattere, known as I Gesuati, the dome of which is in the centre of the composition, one of the finest Eighteenth century churches in Venice, the ceiling being by Tiepelo. Franz Richard Unterberger (1838-1902) is regarded as one of the foremost Nineteenth century painters of Venice, capturing the beauty of the city, the life and light for his Grand tour patrons. Eugene de Blaas (1843-1932), the son of Karl, Professor of the Academy in Venice, was renowned for his paintings of beautiful Venetian women seen, as here, in a narrative context, contemplating an unseen admirer. Laurence Stephen Lowry RA, RBA, LG, NS Three Figures
L.S. Lowry (1887-1976) was undoubtedly one of the great observers of humanity. The present family group is well dressed suggesting relative affluence and their slight stoop indicates they are in something of a hurry. By layering paint Lowry almost carves the outline of his figures, embedding them in their surroundings, thus imbuing comparatively simple works such as this with complexity and impact. Dame Laura Knight RA Three Spanish Jugglers
From Nottingham School of Art in the early 1890’s, Laura Knight (1874-1961) was created a Dame in 1929 and in 1936 was the first woman elected as a full member of the Royal Academy, over 200 years after its foundation. She was drawn to subjects where women were seen and judged as equals, Theatre, Ballet and the Circus. She would become very involved in her subject, travelling with the Circus and here capturing the intensity of the performers. Museums: London, Hull, Brisbane, Detroit

Walter Richard Sickert ARA Barnet Fair
Barnet Fair first took place in 1588, and was for centuries a horse, cattle and livestock Fair. By the time Walter Richard Sickert (1860-1942) portrayed the Fair, here circa 1928-30, it had increasingly become a Fair of traditional fairground entertainment, with horse trading taking a minor role, and referred to in the painting by the horses grazing beneath the trees. This an uplifting painting, a tented children’s theatre awaiting the arrival of the crowds streaming through the distant gates, by an artist regarded as one of the founders of the Modern British Movement. Henry Moret
Le Guilly, Port de Pêche
Born in Cherbourg and a disciple of Gaugin and the Pont Aven School, Henry Moret (1856-1913) spent much of his career painting the coast, fields and forest of Brittany, but it was above all the coast and fishing communities that were the focus of his work. Gradually, Moret’s style evolved to become, as in this composition, more impressionistic with the silvery light and flecks of colour and smaller more delicate brushstrokes. An iconic subject for Montague Dawson (1890–1973) shows The Chariot of Fame under full sail, forging through a wave while spray is whipped from the crests by the following wind. Chariot of Fame was built in Boston in 1853 for the White Diamond Line, voyaging to Liverpool, Acapulco, San Francisco and Valparaiso. Sold in 1857 to the White Star line following the financial crisis of 1857, she ended her days abandoned in 1876 on a voyage from the Chincha Islands off Peru bound for Cork. Brisk Weather off the Needles, Isle of Wight
The Isle of Wight and the three chalk stacks forming the Needles, at the western extremity of the island, serve as an iconic backdrop to this composition. Dawson (1890–1973), who had served in the Royal Navy during the First World War, lived in Milford on Sea, opposite the Needles. The Solent was a body of water that was a constant source of inspiration to the artist, and as a lifelong sailor Dawson was familiar with all of its characteristics. upil well-being and mental health is highly valued alongside academic achievement. In the UK, the number of vulnerable pupils with mental health issues has increased significantly in recent years and the School believes that it is vitally important to take care of emotional well-being. Bishop Challoner School aims to ensure pupils’ learning experiences are not only successful but satisfying too. Mental health can have as much impact on learning as physical health and the School believes that taking care of one’s well-being will lay the foundations for a more contented life that will equip its pupils with skills for dealing with the difficult challenges adulthood and life will almost certainly bring. Bishop Challoner’s counselling service has become a mental health service to provide shortterm counselling through one-to-one sessions to support its pupils with mental health needs. It is there to support the emotional health of pupils that underpins academic achievement and helps to facilitate building and management of healthy relationships in the school environment. There are a number of reasons pupils use the counselling service at Bishop Challoner, including: anxiety; low self-esteem; relationship

difficulties (both at home and with peers) and bereavement though this list is not exhaustive and the service is there to provide support for all emotional needs. We are open! Port Lympne Hotel & Reserve and Howletts Wild Animal Park are on the road to recovery following the national lockdown in March as a result of the covid-19 pandemic
D
uring the furlough period the parks were overwhelmed with applications from volunteers who generously donated their time, skills and resources to keep the parks running and to prepare them for reopening. Volunteers included; plumbers, electricians, decorators and tree surgeons. Keepers stayed onsite to care for the animals and we were fortunate to have the support of our friends and donors from all around the UK. More than 2,000 people purchased virtual care packages to contribute towards the feeding costs of the animals in our care. Thousands more selflessly made generous financial donations and local businesses have been extraordinarily supportive. Food for the animals was donated by Wessanen, The Pig at Bridge and Morrisons Folkestone. Building materials were generously provided by our friends at AJ Services Arboriculture, Ian Williams, Homebase, Wickes Folkestone, Ffx Folkestone Fixings, Light and Power Solutions Limited, Jewsons Hythe, Kent Action Carpets, Phillip Cowen Interiors, Sylvan Joinery, RJA Flooring and DJ Invicta Supplies. The tremendous support received over this closure period from staff, customers and donors allowed the parks to reopen their doors to customers, with every visit supporting the work of animal conservation charity, The Aspinall Foundation. Since reopening in July, staff and volunteers have been working extremely hard to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for customers as the country returns to some form of normality. Both parks are equipped with appropriate measures including: lowering our daily ticket capacity, introduction of a pre-booking system for park admission tickets and

experiences, hand sanitising stations, enhanced cleaning regimes, suspension of safaris for day visitors and perspex screens. With these additional measures in place, we are confident that we can maintain the safety and wellbeing of customers, staff and animals. At Howletts Wild Animal Park, this 100-acre site boasts rolling countryside and ancient woodland which is home to more than 390 animals across 52 species. This includes the only herd of African elephants in Kent, western lowland gorillas, honey badgers as well as tigers, lions, leopards and more. In addition to wildlife, families will also enjoy the Animals of the Ice Age experience; an outdoor exhibition nestled amongst woodland where you will find mighty mammoths, giant sloths and more! If you want a staycation to remember, the 600-acre Port Lympne Hotel & Reserve offers a range of unique short breaks, which includes a 180-degree panoramic bubble, glamping options and treehouses. For those brave enough to sleep with lions or tigers, you can book luxury lodges which feature large picture windows into their enclosures.

ONE of us enter into a marriage or civil partnership expecting to divorce or dissolve the union. But sadly it happens. When you decide to walk away you’ll probably have a joint property, bank accounts and other complicated assets to divide.
Those held separately and jointly. Combined, these disclosures will help to reach a fair and accurate agreement for everyone.
Maintenance for you and your children
Dividing assets: who gets what? The decision on who gets what is based on several defining considerations. These include your ages, length of your marriage and the standards of living during the union. Contributions by both parties are also taken into account; not just the financial ones, but a number of others too. Along with obligations, debts, requirements and needs. The assets that are considered can include property, savings, investments and pensions. This process is called Financial Remedy Proceedings.
Financial disclosure You and your partner will both need to disclose all the assets that you own.

If you have been financially dependent on your partner, you may be eligible for maintenance from them. The Court will consider the income and outgoings of both parties and then make their decision. If you are earning an income and not living with your child you may have to pay child maintenance. Factors influencing the amount include your income, the number of children and how many nights they stay with you.
If you can’t agree We always recommend that you try to reach an agreement with your ex-partner so that you are both happy. It will cut down on the costs of going to Court, not to mention heartache and stress. Mediation can help achieve this. However, if you are unable to reach an agreement the Court can decide for you. This is called a Financial Remedy Order. They
will take all the above into consideration and provide what they consider a fair split.
No magic formula We are all unique, which means that our circumstances are too. Unfortunately, there is no magic formula that can be applied to tell you how much you will receive. There is also a wide range of settlement that can be ordered or approved by the Court. This will range from a simple 50:50 settlement to even 80:20 in some cases.

The new campaign will celebrate the lives of Tower Bridge today more prominently than ever before; piecing together the story of the people working behind the scenes at the historical bridge, and the visitors who walk its floors.
Tower Bridge wants you! For a chance to feature in the Lives of a Landmark exhibition, Tower Bridge is launching an open call-out to find out the public’s connections with the Bridge. Whether they’ve never been inside or it’s a place that simply inspires, embodies a feeling, or even reminds people of their favourite TV show or film; to those with fond memories of visiting with friends and family, or may have ancestors that worked there. acclaimed artist Kara Walker presents one of the most ambitious hyundai commissions to date. Extended to 8 november 2020
ons Americanus is a 13-metre tall working fountain inspired by the Victoria Memorial in front of Buckingham Palace. Rather than a celebration of the British Empire, Walker’s fountain inverts the usual function of a memorial and questions narratives of power. Walker explores the interconnected histories of Africa, America and Europe. She uses water as a key theme, referring to the transatlantic slave trade and the ambitions, fates and tragedies of people from these three continents. Bringing together fact, fantasy and fiction, Fons Americanus stands as a representation of this narrative in the form of an allegory or fable. The larger fountain of Fons Americanus presents an allegory or extended metaphor of the Black Atlantic. The Black Atlantic is a term first used by the historian Paul Gilroy to acknowledge how the legacy of transatlantic slave trade has shaped the development of Black identity and culture in America and Europe. This commission has been made using an environmentally-conscious production process and has been built from recyclable or reusable cork, wood and metal. The surface covering is made from a non-toxic acrylic and cement composite that can be used for sculpting or casting. It avoids the use of large quantities of non-recyclable materials and harmful substances often found in
the production of exhibitions and installations. Based in New York, Kara Walker is acclaimed for her candid explorations of race, sexuality and violence. She is best known for her use of black cut-paper silhouetted figures, referencing the history of slavery and the antebellum South in the US through provocative and elaborate installations. “My work has always been a time machine looking backwards across decades and centuries to arrive at some understanding of my “place” in the contemporary moment.’ - Kara Walker The dates for this exhibition have been updated, this is due to the disruption caused by the coronavirus. Fons Americanus is included in all one-way routes through Tate Modern. Timed tickets must be booked before visiting, all visitors, including Members, need to book a ticket.

utumn is here, and that means it’s all change in the fashion and beauty departments, as we wave goodbye to summer and say hello to the newseason collections. The AW20 catwalks brought us a bounty of fabulous hair and make-up looks, and there’s something to suit everyone – from sparkle and shimmer to moody hues, and the re-emergence of some classic techniques. Here are the most important beauty trends of the season…
Metallic shine Another look that’s destined for the dance floor, mirror-like flashes were a favourite at London Fashion Week, with models at Preen, Simone Rocha and Erdem all adorned with metallic foils. In shades of silver, gold and red, the chocolate wrapper-like textures were placed in an abstract manner, giving an antique, worn-in vibe.
Winged eyeliner Mastered the feline flick? Then it’s time to take it up a notch with one of the edgy black winged liner looks seen on the catwalks, from the cut crease flick at Stella McCartney, to the bold double-wing designs at Valentino and Miu Miu. Alternatively, the crisp mini-wing at Richard Quinn is a good starting point for newbies.

Pops of colour The brightest make-up hues are usually reserved for spring, but there were some welcome splashes of colour on the autumn catwalks. Pink was particularly popular, with bubblegum pink eyes at Matty Bovan, fuchsia mascara at Off-White, and Eighties-style eyeshadow at Rixo.

Hair stylists went all out for AW20, creating some spectacular catwalk looks, from huge, wide wigs at Matty Bovan and sculpted braids at Ashish, to colourful stencilled locks at Emilio Pucci and slicked-back silver tresses at Erdem. Obviously, these aren’t the kind of styles you can easily replicate at home, but the chic twisted knots and braids seen at Fendi and Rixo are a lot more wearable, while still offering plenty of wow-factor.

‘lockdown has taught me how to be happy on my own’ The TV presenter, who caught coronavirus earlier this year, tells Katie Wright how 2020 has helped her grow. virus “moderately”. “I wasn’t hospitalised, but I did speak to a GP on the phone. I had all of the things – sickness; sorry to say it but diarrhoea; I had the cough.” Unfortunately, Gallacher’s parents caught the virus off her (when she wasn’t showing symptoms) but all made a full recovery and now, the 44-yearold is looking on the bright side: “I was tested and was very strongly Covid positive and antibody positive.” But there is a positive to come out of this challenging period. The mum-of-two says that being forced to spend more time alone this year has helped her learn how to be happy on her own – something she struggled with in the past. “Touch wood, I’ve possibly cracked that – which was a real problem for me and caused me major distress when I got divorced. “It was one of the biggest causes of my terrible couple of years of anxiety, not dealing with things very well because I couldn’t be on my own. “I cope better now, which is really, really lovely. And I’m much happier in my own skin.”

eflecting on the last few months, Kirsty Gallacher is remarkably upbeat for someone who caught coronavirus and had to put a number of work projects on hold, saying she feels “very, very lucky” to have spent lockdown in the “dream house” she bought at the end of last year. “It was almost fate, looking back, because [the house] nearly fell through last summer,” she says of the barn conversion in the Berkshire countryside. “We were in heaven, really, compared to a lot of people who were stuck in cities.” The TV presenter was joined some of the time by sons Oscar and Jude, who split their time between Gallacher and her ex-husband, former rugby player Paul Sampson. The couple split in 2015. Suffering with Covid at the end of March wasn’t heaven, Gallacher admits, but says she only had the

Max Factor False lash effect Mascara black Speaking of skin, Gallacher says she’s been getting a lot of compliments on her complexion recently, which she puts down to a treatment called Ultherapy. Earlier this year, the former Sky Sports News presenter took on a new role as brand ambassador for the non-invasive procedure. “It’s an amazing treatment that uses ultrasound energy to give your skin’s collagen production a boost. “Your collagen starts working for itself within your skin – rejuvenating your skin, sculpting, lifting – all the things that collagen does for us.” Gallacher says that before she was approached by Ultherapy, she was considering other anti-ageing treatments but “wasn’t ready for needles” and says she finds it worrying that so many young people are having fillers. “I get really upset when I see 16, 17, 18-year-old girls or boys plumping their lips up. “I would discourage anyone that young from having an invasive treatment, because you just don’t know what you’re going to be dealing with in 20 years.” During lockdown, the broadcaster – who is launching a podcast in September – has been enjoying not wearing make-up, and admits she was shocked when she saw herself fully made-up for a virtual interview on Good Morning Britain. “I looked at myself after and I thought ‘Oh God, you look awful’,” she says with a laugh. Believe it or not, the kitchen island has been around since the 1930s, influenced by the architect Frank Lloyd Wright. It wasn’t until the 80s when the kitchen island became mainstream, further developing since then to become the staple of the modern kitchen, and it’s easy to see why.

he island is a versatile feature, offering additional storage and food preparation space, as well as acting as a centrepiece to the increasingly popular open-plan design. It is crucial that modern kitchens now function not only as a cooking space, but also a dining and social space, further contributing to the improvement of kitchen island designs. We take a look at some of the options now available. Raising the Bar As mentioned, an island can add a social aspect to your kitchen. A circular raised breakfast bar is an excellent option, opening up space from the main part of the island and creating a defined seating area, providing an element of structure to your open-plan kitchen. Unlike

some long, rectangular breakfast bars, the circular shape means a small group can all sit facing each other so socialising is much easier than if everyone was sat in a row. Soft, cushioned materials aren’t something we would strongly associate with the kitchen, but a booth is the ideal way to incorporate them, providing a unique texture element.
