omitti Boats UK & Caribbean owned by Dr Karen Dickens is delighted to sponsor The Twelve Days of Christmas Challenge (cornwallairambulancetrust.org) to help fundraise for the Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust this December. The fundraising initiative brings together many well-known names who will be sharing some great Christmas ideas as well as a Grand Auction of original, bespoke items which have been created specially to help raise money for the charity. And it’s a charity close to Karen’s heart, whose love of sailing originates from growing up in Cornwall. Despite working and travelling all around the world, Cornwall will always be home for her. Karen explains: “The Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust is a critical emergency service for the region and if you’ve ever lived, worked or holidayed there you will know the important role it plays in saving hundreds of lives every year. Now more than ever they need our help for essential equipment and to keep the Helicopter flying, which is why we’ve created this initiative and, long term, we’ve committed one per cent of all UK sales.” As well as her charity plans, Karen’s aim is to expand the reach of Comitti into new markets. Come home to
SRI LANKA The heart of Ceylon, right here in Bromley
I
f you’ve walked down East street recently, you’ve likely stumbled upon a conspicuous looking tuk-tuk, parked on the pavement and wondered, “someone’s travelled a long way from home.” And if you have, you’re not wrong. An exotic haven amidst the bustle of Bromley’s streets, Copper Ceylon is a breath of fresh coastal air. Step right into Sri Lanka, with a warm Sri Lankan welcome into lush interiors and an exquisite bar. The ambience delivers the perfect blend of east meets west with affable charm. If you are looking for an authentic Sri Lankan experience, or simply to relish the taste of home, you’ll find it at Copper Ceylon. The aroma that emanates from the kitchen, spiked with a consortium of spices, stirs up a memory of sneaking a taste of Grandma’s cooking before lunch is served at the table. The flavour of curry, straight from the copper cooking pot is beyond compare. And Copper Ceylon brings the cooking pot right to the table. Sri Lankan cuisine is shaped by historical and cultural factors, enriched by the abundance of spices. The Jaffna mutton curry, one among several distinctive dishes, is packed with flavour and a unique spice blend, imported all the way from Sri Lanka. The prawn red curry is rich and creamy, a signature of Trincomalee, one of Sri

Lanka’s oldest cities. And of course, the ultimate comfort food- Koththu Roti. This delightful dish brings together meat, vegetables, a host of delicious masalas and Koththu (shredded) Roti (bread) with cohesive brilliance. You’ve probably never tried anything quite like it, and if you have, you know exactly how modest yet delicious it is! Visiting the bar is like taking that trip to that tropical island you’ve longed for all summer. The Ceylon Dream is a signature cocktail worthy of its title. It is the perfect blend of Gin, Royal Chambord, with the freshness of cranberry and elderflower, spiked with kaffir lime leaves. Another popular signature, appropriately named Spice Island brings the heat to a cool glass of gin, mandarin syrup and fresh orange juice, with a hit a chilli and ginger. The cocktails are exotic and vibrant in both flavour and presentation, you don’t want to miss out on it! If you’ve always yearned to travel to Sri Lanka, or simply miss the taste of home, Copper Ceylon offers that authentic, transcending experience right here in Bromley.

Transform your
LIVING SPACE
Whether you and your family love films, are crazy about music or are gaming fanatics, we can create the entertainment room of your dreams.
W
e have seen a big up-lift this year with media rooms and home cinema systems being installed into under-utilised spaces, be it existing TV rooms that need a technology and decor refresh, through to full conversions of garages, loft rooms and basement spaces. How is a ‘media room’ different from a ‘home cinema’? We admit ‘media room’ may not be the most exciting term in the world, but we promise it is a very worthwhile addition to your property. Simply put, we are talking about a living room-type space where you can watch movies or TV and game on a large screen or projection system and listen to music in high quality. A cinema room we generally see as a dedicated space with a large projection screen, ceiling projector with a row or two of cinema seating. The design and finish of the room tends to be a bit more luxurious in terms of wall finishes as fabric wrapping not only looks stunning it is also there to help with room acoustics. What sort of size room do I need? This space required for these is not a big as you may think, we have worked in rooms that are 3mts square 26 DECEMBER 2020
and the results looked and sounded amazing. There is no perfect sized room, our own demonstration cinema is around 5mts long by 4mts wide, although we do say it is perfect. Is a media room less impressive than a fullblown cinema room? Absolutely not! These are just two different options, depending on space, budget and most importantly, what is the best option for your home and family. To help you decide what would be the most suitable, ask yourself: • • Do I have space for and want a dedicated room with fixed seating for a set number of people (Do I have a spare room or basement/attic in my house to convert?) • I want the best movie-watching environment and all round home cinema experience (i.e. acoustic treatment, lighting, room decor and more)? • Am I looking to add technology to a multifunctional space (i.e. so I can watch movies when I want to, but also do other things there)? • Do I want a space with casual seating suited to interacting/spending time with family as well as watching films?

Yoghurt Potato Curry Provenance Potatoes teams up with GBBO’s Chetna Makan
W
ith a recipe that takes the unassuming potato to the next level, Provenance Potatoes has teamed up with creative baker and Kent chef Chetna Makan to celebrate locally grown potatoes in this Yoghurt Potato Curry. After finding recognition on Great British Bake Off in 2014, Chetna Makan has become a household name; known for bringing western bakes to life with Indian flavours and a passion inspired from cooking food at home for the family with local, nutritious ingredients. Provenance Potatoes has been supplying Chetna with quality, locally grown potatoes for her recipe INGREDIENTS 1 kg small potatoes, cut into half 2 tbsp sunflower oil 4 cardamom pods 1 bay leaf 2 medium onions 2 green chillies 1 inch ginger 200g natural yogurt
development and home cooking for years. Together they have created this curry which champions the potato, enhancing it with a rich creaminess from the yoghurt and gentle spicy kick from the chilli. Perfect as a midweek meal, this potato curry can be served with piping hot naan or a pile of steaming hot rice. The yogurt adds a light, refreshing taste while the potatoes act as the perfect conduit for all the delicious spices. Known for growing quality potatoes and supporting British farmers, Provenance Potatoes can now be found in family sized 2Kg packs across the South in independent shops and farm shops.
1 tbsp ground coriander 1 tsp mango powder (amchur) 1 tsp ground ginger 1 tsp chilli powder 1 tsp salt 1 tsp turmeric powder handful fresh coriander leaves
METHOD 1. Put the potatoes in a pan and cover it with water. Bring it to a boil and cook for 4 to 5 minutes until they begin to soften. Drain and leave them aside for 5 minutes to get rid of all the water. Pat them dry. 2. Heat some oil in a pan for shallow frying, once hot add the potatoes and cook for 4-5 minutes until golden. You might have to do this in batches. 3. Leave the potatoes aside and start with the curry. Heat 2 tbsp of oil in a pan and add the cardamom and bay leaf and let it sizzle for a few seconds. Then add the onions and the chillies and let it cook on medium to low heat for 15 minutes until golden. To this add the ginger and cook for another minute. 4. In a bowl combine the yogurt with the spices. Take the onions off the heat and add the yogurt mix and stir well. Put it back on very low heat and stir for a few seconds then add 100 ml water and bring it to a boil. 5. Keep the heat low and add the golden potatoes to the mix. Cover and cook for 10 minutes until the potatoes are cooked and curry has thickened. LASTING POWERS OF ATTORNEY
Who would you want to make decisions on your health and finances (if you should lose the ability to do so)?
I
am often surprised to find that whilst clients are preoccupied by what will happen to their assets in the event of their death, they are less concerned by who will manage their affairs should they become incapable of doing so themselves. I would always recommend that one consider preparation of Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA), documents which allow you to appoint persons to act on your behalf (known as attorneys) if you cannot do so yourself. If an LPA is not prepared, the only alternative would be for someone to apply to the Court of Protection to act for you. This is a lengthier, more expensive process, and unlike the LPA, does not allow an incapable person to choose who is appointed. When appointing an attorney, there are a number of considerations to bear in mind; can you trust them to act in your best interests? Will they be capable of managing your affairs? Are they of an appropriate age? Will they respect your values? Will your attorney be able and objective? Typically, a person chooses to appoint their spouse or partner to act on their behalf, alongside their children, but this may not be an option for everyone. They may not have any close family, or they may not be local to them. Their closest family members may be of a similar age to them, or have health concerns that would make it difficult for them to act as an
30 DECEMBER 2020
attorney. There could be disputes in the family which would make it impossible for them to work together productively if appointed as attorneys. In such cases, it would be appropriate to consider appointing an independent professional attorney, such as a solicitor. If appointing a solicitor as your attorney, you will be able to rest assured that they will act in your best interests, and that they will have the necessary skills and knowledge to manage your affairs for you, regardless of complexity. If there are family arguments, a professional attorney will be able to act objectively to consider your interests. Make your requirements clear If appointing a solicitor as your attorney, it is important that you make it clear how you would like your affairs to be managed, for example, you may have strong feelings about your long term care, religious beliefs or types of investments. Guidance can be inserted into the LPA to help the attorney make decisions for you. It would also be sensible to consider an annual meeting with the attorney, to ensure that they are kept up date on your financial position, and to discuss how your wishes and circumstances may have changed over the preceding year. In short, an LPA is a very important document indeed, and with a professional attorney there will always be someone willing and able to act on your behalf.

POWERS OF ATTORNEY - DON’T WAIT UNTIL IT IS TOO LATE It’s a difficult conversation to have, but don’t put it off. Organising a Lasting Power of Attorney for yourself, a partner or parent doesn’t mean that person has lost the ability to manage their affairs. It’s a valuable insurance policy, in case they do. A power of attorney is a legally binding document that allows someone to make decisions for another person, or act on their behalf, if they are no longer able to do so or if they no longer want to make their own decisions. There are two types of powers of attorney, one is for making decisions on property and financial affairs such as operating bank accounts, settling bills, claiming and using benefits and pensions and buying and selling property. The second covers health and welfare matters including medical care, where to live and social activities.

The Connaught Bar at The Connaught, in Mayfair, renowned for exceptional craftsmanship, landmark cocktails and daring new mixes has had a place on the Best Bar’s list since 2010. This year is the first time this institution for cocktail lovers has been named the official winner. The distinction comes at a difficult time as the UK entered a second lockdown last month, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Agostino Perrone, Director of Mixology accepted the bar’s award via Zoom, and said “This accolade rounds off a long journey of dedication for the entire Connaught Bar team who have never stopped believing in our work. Our commitment to the hospitality industry and to our beloved guests has been our core pillar and driver for the past 12 years and in particular for the last 18 months. A
nticipated to be one of the stand-out shows of the spring and not to be missed, the world’s largest touring exhibition of Banksy Artworks is coming to London. For the very first time, the UK will host an array of unique pieces from the mysterious political activist, satirist and artist, who has spent most of the last three decades anonymously tagging the streets of the world. This globally acclaimed showcase features original and authenticated works associated with, arguably, the most intriguing and talked-about artist in modern history. On display are prints, canvasses, screen prints, sculptures, unique works and limited-edition pieces mainly dated between the years 1997 to 2008, the period which resulted in Banksy’s most recognisable and well-known works. On loan from private collectors across the globe, the colossal collection includes authenticated and certified Banksy artworks rarely seen in public, alongside iconic favourites such as HMV Dog and Girl and Balloon. Infamous prints, sculptures and limited editions will be scattered across a vast 12,000 square foot space in the heart of Covent Garden. From Tel Aviv to Toronto, from Melbourne to Miami, the exhibition has welcomed over 750,000
visitors worldwide. Following Banksy’s Show me the Monet artwork collecting over £7.5m at auction, public intrigue around one of the most talked-about artists of the 21st century seems to only be increasing. Decades of rumours continue as to the identity of this world record-breaking artist. Although The Art of Banksy is not authorised or curated in collaboration with the artist himself, international specialist in the Street Art Genre, Chris Ford, successfully steps up as curator. Chris was instrumental in developing the commercial rise of Banksy’s artwork in the secondary market, successfully placing multi-million pound works into prestigious international collections. MERRYTHOUGHT PARTNERS WITH MULBERRY FOR FESTIVE TEDDY BEAR CAMPAIGN

he UK’s oldest remaining teddy bear manufacturer has teamed up with fellow British heritage brand Mulberry to bring two special limited-edition teddy bears to the new 2020 festive collection. Merrythought, which celebrates its 90th year in business this year, has hand-crafted the new characters from two shades of the finest mohair wool, with each sporting the famous Mulberry logo on their left leather paw. A pure wool tweed scarf, designed in Mulberry’s seasonal colours and also custom-woven in England, provides a truly unique finishing touch to each bear. Fourth-generation managing director of Merrythought, Sarah Holmes, expressed her delight to be working with the famous British fashion brand again. “We really enjoyed working with Mulberry for its 2019 festive campaign and were overwhelmed by the response our Merrythought bears received, with one colour selling out within just a few days. The team in Ironbridge is very proud to collaborate with Mulberry once again. We have created two beautiful teddy bears that are not only entirely British-made, right down the traditionallywoven scarf, but which we hope will bring joy to their customers for many years to come. “ Merrythought teddy bears are world-renowned and sold as far afield as Australia and Japan, but are proudly made in Britain in the same factory the company started 90 years ago. With a highly-skilled team making every bear by hand, it’s a meticulous 15-stage process which uses the finest natural

CALLING ALL HARRY POTTER FANS:
Quidditch Statue and Film Screenings land in Leicester Square ‘Scenes in the Square’ interactive film trail
A
statue of Harry Potter has been unveiled in Leicester Square, joining an illustrious trail of timeless movie characters from the past 100 years in London’s home of film. The statue depicts Potter flying on his Nimbus 2000 in his debut Quidditch match – a thrilling encounter between Gryffindor and Slytherin from the first movie, ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’.. It coincides with the release of Quidditch Through the Ages Illustrated Edition from publisher, Bloomsbury UK. A Harry Potter section has been added to the trail’s audio tour, hosted by Alex Zane and packed with movie clips, on most podcast platforms, giving visitors a thirty-minute walking tour packed with trivia and humour. Each movie era is represented with the legendry Laurel and Hardy comedy duo and Looney Tunes’ Bugs Bunny illustrating the 1920s to 1940s. The 1950s present the iconic figure of Gene Kelly on a lamppost from the timeless dance sequence in ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ (1952). Meanwhile a stunning statue of Mary Poppins landed in Leicester Square gardens - the 1964 film a shining example of 1960s cinema. Gracing the rooftops is Batman, DC’s iconic Super Hero, celebrating onscreen 42 DECEMBER 2020
presence in every decade since the 1980s. The trail also recognises a British comedy great in Mr. Bean, who bumbled his way to box office success in his first big screen outing ‘Bean’ in 1997. Visitors can share a bench with Rowan Atkinson’s globally popular creation. Representing the 2010s is the treasured British icon Paddington, whose beloved cinematic outings Paddington and Paddington 2 premiered in Leicester Square in 2014 and 2017 respectively. You can sit on a bench and have lunch beside the marmalade loving star! Completing the trail and representing the 2020s is Wonder Woman - DC’s iconic Super Hero who stands for justice, peace and equality. Bursting dynamically through a wall, the figure celebrates the release of Wonder Woman 1984, starring Gal Gadot. Five further plots have been made available for new film and entertainment statues with organisers promising many much-loved and diverse movie icons to come. Are you thinking of changing your family set up in 2021? S
TAYING at home during lockdown may have made you rethink your family set up. After years of deliberation perhaps now is the time to change your family circumstances. We understand this and know that it’s never easy when you decide to end a relationship. However, we can help with the process and ensure that you make the right legal decisions for you and your family.
Know your legal rights If you’ve decided that this is the last Christmas you will spend with your partner then it will be important to know your legal rights. These rights vary considerably depending on whether you are married or not. For example, there is no such thing as a ‘common law’ husband or wife and so unmarried couples, regardless of the length of their relationship, have limited rights upon separation. Couples who are married, or in a civil partnership, do however have a wider range of rights available to them.

Solicitor Family Department
Who gets what?
Should I go to Mediation?
Dividing your matrimonial assets is an important part of the divorce settlement. These assets can include property, pensions, savings and possessions. The division of assets is based on several defining considerations: your ages, length of your union and your standards of living. Contributions by both parties are also taken into account; not just the financial ones, but a number of others too; along with obligations, debts, requirements and needs.
Mediation is a neutral, impartial process that can assist you in reaching an agreement with your spouse or partner about the terms of your financial settlement, as well as the future arrangements for your children. Mediators are impartial and will not advise one party more favourably than the other.
Maintenance for you and your children If you have been financially dependent on your partner, you may be eligible for maintenance from them. If it goes to Court, they will consider the income and outgoings of both parties and then make their decision. If you are earning an income and not living with your child you may have to pay child maintenance. Factors influencing the amount include your income, the number of children and how many nights they stay with you.
A solicitor can, however, guide and advise on how to achieve the most favourable settlement. They have your best interests in mind, and it therefore makes sense to be armed with this expertise when you begin mediation.
A time that suits We all live busy lives, which is why we are able to offer a limited number of pre-arranged appointments outside of the usual 9-5. These are specifically for our clients wishing to discuss the financial aspects of their separations Call our family department to discuss your requirements.

ondon’s most ‘instagrammable’ ice rink is back for an unmissable skating experience this festive season. And this year the rink is even
bigger! Set against the striking backdrop of the Queen’s House, visitors have the opportunity to skate in the beautiful surrounds of a UNESCO World Heritage site and the elegant grounds of Royal Museums Greenwich. Enjoy unbeatable views of the River Thames as you glide (or wobble) your way around the only outdoor ice rink in south London this Christmas. What better treat is there than to skate in front of the ‘House of delight’ built especially for James I’s Queen? New measures have been introduced this year to make sure that everybody can enjoy the ice rink safely. There are hygiene standards fit for royalty, with enhanced cleaning regimes and hand washing sanitation facilities available. Meanwhile
staggered skate sessions will ensure fewer people on the ice at any one time. All visitors must follow all government social distancing guidelines and the wearing of a mask whilst on the rink and in the skate exchange or any other indoor area. For those who prefer to chill out off the ice, you can soak up the beautiful surroundings of Greenwich Park, take in the spectacular views across London and enjoy a hot chocolate and a choice of snacks while watching the skaters. If you want to make a day of it, there is so much more to see and do - from visiting the award-winning Cutty Sark, seeing the iconic Armada portrait in the Queen’s House, learning about the origins of time at the Royal Observatory and exploring the collection at the National Maritime Museum. The beautiful Greenwich market is only two minutes away for Christmas shopping. With easy transport links, Greenwich is just eight minutes from London Bridge, or arrive by boat along the River Thames.
ABOUT THE QUEEN’S HOUSE The 17th century Queen’s House, designed by Inigo Jones, was the first Classical building in England – it is known for its perfectly proportioned Great Hall, original marble floor and beautiful Tulip staircase. Part of Royal Museums Greenwich, the Queen’s House has Scheduled Monument status as it is a building of unique architectural importance.

PURE & FRESH
Beer done well is an incredible thing to experience. From the mouthfeel of a rich stout that can seem more like chocolate dessert than beer; to double- or triple-hopped IPAs, with their intense juicy, fruity flavours and knockyour-socks off ABV; or, classic world beer styles where the brewing methods have remained unchanged for thousands of years.

o Frills Joe’s beers embody an honest and traditional approach to brewing: a love of beer and expectation of quality. Beers are batch-brewed, not mass brewed, and limited partnerships with local Kent hops growers and unique recipes result in some truly one-of-a-kind beers. Our beers are unpasteurised to ensure that they remain natural and of the highest quality, with a rounder and more complex flavour profile than can be achieved with pasteurisation. No Frills Joe beers are meant to be enjoyed fresh. It is for this reason we have pioneered one-hour delivery for most of our orders, and same-day delivery when one-hour is not possible. Kent, No Frills Joe is a growing brewery. Even with continuing investment in our future: building out presence in pubs, bars and shops and increasing capacity to ship nationwide before the end of 2020, we are still firmly determined in developing a strong local presence. With a series of Kent-based taprooms planned, placing us at the heart of several town redevelopments, No Frills Joe is a brand to keep an eye on. What do we have on now? That’s a good question. Swirl, then breathe in the grapefruit and tangerine aromas of a single hopped American style pale ale; savour a premium and beautifully traditional Czech style pilsner; or, would you enjoy a fullbodied, sweet and very, very moreish lager at the end of a long week? You can see what we have available to enjoy to the minute, with our Beer Doctor Joe app. And just imagine, you could be enjoying any one of our beers an hour from now.

Boots Made For Walking
T
here can be few better ways to blow away the cobwebs than with a good walk on a Cornish beach, perhaps with a faithful hound at your side. Such was the experience of Sandy Wallis of Perranporth with her very obedient Rhodesian Ridgeback,
Roscoe. Sandy was keen to have the right footwear for the job: durable, comfortable and waterproof. Thwarted in her quest to find the perfect dog walking footwear she decided to create her own dream pair of boots. “We walk every day in all weathers” says Sandy but I just could not find a pair of boots that were comfy and would keep my feet warm and dry. Hiking boots didn’t cope well with those deep muddy puddles and wellies are not really suitable for a 5 mile hike”. Having rummaged around in her cupboard, Sandy found an old pair of “riggers” which are safety boots originally designed for the North Sea Oil riggers. “I started wearing them to walk the dog and they were amazing. I thought it would be good to design my own ‘off rig’ version that were lighter and with an excellent hiking sole. The result is a very stylish, practical boot suitable for both men and women. If I told you of a completely natural therapy that is proven to lower blood pressure, reduce stress, relieve headaches, strengthen your immune system, improve concentration, pep up your love life and then help you sleep better surely it would be worth investigating! This therapy has been around for thousands of years and is today scientifically proven to work. The benefits of regular massage are proven and here is how it works Reduce stress Endorphins are the body’s natural opiates and are released during massage, they reduce the perception of pain by calming the peripheral nervous system. Massage is also proven to reduce cortisol (the ‘stress hormone’) by an average of 31% which is staggering! Relieve headaches There are countless numbers of reasons that people experience headaches but high up the list would be hypertension in the neck and
60 DECEMBER 2020
shoulders, often from poor posture, working from home on video calls, hours in front of a computer…
This therapy has been around for thousands of years and is today scientifically proven to work
Sleep Better Massage and the chemistry of sleep are related because massage can increase the production of serotonin. Numerous studies on the positive effect of increased serotonin in improved sleep and dramatic improvements in the reduction of insomnia. A study conducted by the Touch Research institute within the University of Miami’s School of medicine proved this too! Pep up your love life Well it’s obvious isn’t it! If you have at least taken a positive step and have opted to try massage as a healthy and drug free alternative to reducing stress with the potential spin of benefit of reducing blood pressure, if you have taken action to try and incorporate massage as a way of strengthening your immune system, If massage has improved your sleep patterns and taken away the headaches then you will have the time and energy to concentrate on improving your love life!

Kitchen storage isn’t just for packing your utensils, packets, cans and jars.
M
odern kitchen storage not only makes inspired use of all the available space, but it also plays a key role in your kitchen’s appearance. Thus, there is now a huge variety of creative and stylish storage options for designing your dream kitchen. Show off your storage Pantries are fast becoming an ever-present in the modern kitchen. Whether you’re a coffee connoisseur or a spice enthusiast, pantries are a fashionable and practical way to display your collection. Taking the pantry a step further, space towers can be designed entirely to your taste, complementing your kitchen’s look. Incorporating glass sides into the drawers offers even easier visibility and access. Optimising Space When designing your kitchen, positioning large appliances and units will obviously take priority, leaving small spaces around your kitchen which, previously, might have gone unused. Thankfully, there are several ways you can set the tightest of spaces to work. Consider installing a narrow spice rack or even a pull-out towel rail. Additionally, appliances which would typically take up worktop space, such as microwaves and coffee machines, can be built into walls or units, and even hidden behind a sliding or roller door. Keep it Cool Why not incorporate a dedicated wine chiller in your kitchen island, rather than using up space in
66 DECEMBER 2020
your fridge? You’ll need somewhere to keep your wine at the right temperature after the bottle’s been opened too; a wine cooler built into your table or counter is an elegant feature sure to get plenty of use and admiration. Finishing Touches While the primary purpose of storage is function, fashion is also important. Under-surface and interior lighting can really make your final product pop, while also making it easier to see the contents of your cupboards and drawers. Further practicality and class can be provided by servo-drive drawers and high fronted pull-outs, which open and close automatically with a light touch or handle pull. Combining this with soft-close technology adds to your kitchen’s sleek finish by ensuring your drawers close silently every time. So, there’s more than meets the eye when it comes to deciding on your kitchen storage, which is there’s now a wide range of exciting options to help make your kitchen as functional as it is beautiful.

Wellness with Origin Ending the year in a positive way and looking ahead to 2021
“Health is a state of body, wellness is a state of mind”
W
ellness and swimming are often mentioned together, but what does wellness mean? Wellness is the act of practicing healthy habits on a daily basis to achieve better physical and mental health, it ensures that instead of just surviving, you’re thriving. Swimming is an amazing form of exercise and self care that should become a healthy habit more people pick up, it’s great for your mental health and is able to improve quality of sleep and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. At Origin we believe owning a pool is about more than the pool itself, by adding a spa, sauna or yoga room your swimming pool and pool house could be a centre of wellness. If you’re looking to increase family time, your pool house could become a new social hub for everyone to enjoy by adding a gym, lounge area or 68 DECEMBER 2020
even a bar. Whilst jumping in can seem daunting, making the decision can bring measurable benefits. A new pool from Origin provides new ways of having fun, whether that’s spending precious time together as a family or making the idea of a staycation more appealing. Swimming remains one of the most popular activities across the country, with its physical and mental health benefits exceeding expectation. The movement of water over your body creates a massaging sensation which encourages you to relax, just being in water increases blood flow to the brain, boosting your brain health, releasing endorphins and increasing your overall mood. In fact, a SwimEngland study found that those who swim regularly felt on average 12 years younger than those that don’t. If you’re concerned about the environmental impact of the pool or simply want to lower running costs, eco models are available. The ‘EcoSwim’ range incorporates the very latest building materials for energy efficiency and provides you with a host of options to lessen your carbon
footprint. There are plenty of small changes you can make that can have a big impact, many of them saving you money in the future. Whether you want to add an insulated pool cover or air source heat pumps, Origin will work with you to create the pool you want. After all, wellness is important for our planet too. But why Origin? It’s simple, we do it all. Building swimming pools is a specialised field, it’s unlike any other building project and requires a holistic approach with all the key elements working together from the beginning. At Origin, we eliminate the need to employ separate companies by managing the whole process for
you, from concept to completion. Access to a pool right on your doorstep means it’s easy to swim and exercise everyday in the privacy and safety of your own home. We’ve been building award winning swimming pools for over 40 years and in that time we have successfully completed thousands of pools and pool houses to a wide range of specifications. Whether you’re looking for indoor or outdoor, wellness or fun, Origin has experienced it all and are available to help you create your dream pool, managing every stage from start to finish, giving you the confidence and freedom to enjoy finally swimming in your own home. So, end the year on a positive note and let Origin take you to wellness and beyond.

More than just a
KITCHEN
If you’ve been thinking about upgrading your kitchen soon, then we’ve got some fantastic news for you. That’s because a stunning new luxury kitchen showroom has opened in Kent.
T
he award-winning Kesseler Kitchens have opened their latest showroom on the High Street in Edenbridge. An offering of beautiful, British-built kitchens is something that will appeal to many who prefer to keep things local rather than opting for something German. A boutique showroom that offers one-to-one design appointments with their clients, Kesseler Edenbridge are displaying their range of beautiful, bespoke kitchens. Kesseler offer a number of different styles to suit a client’s personal tates; from sophisticated, modern true handleless kitchens to exquisite traditional-style kitchens, so there’s something for all tastes at the new showroom. The Nottinghamshire-based manufacturer builds all of its kitchens using their patented Fortis system, which they say guarantees unrivalled strength and
72 DECEMBER 2020
longevity. They back up this statement by offering a Lifetime Guarantee on all of their kitchens, something relatively unique in the kitchen industry. State of the art manufacturing means they can deliver a kitchen in under 4 weeks from the point of ordering. Nic Shacklock, Kesseler’s Head of Marketing, said. “We identified Edenbridge as a key area last year as it’s a beautiful town. We know that residents in Kent are extremely proud of owning their beautiful homes, so we’re delighted to be able open a fantastic showroom serving the area, where we can transform the kitchens of the local people.” The showroom manager, Jon Clifford, added “I’ve been designing and installing kitchens in amazing properties across Kent for years and when the opportunity to open a Kesseler showroom came up I couldn’t turn it down. They’re making massive waves across the kitchen industry and people just love buying from a high-end British manufacturer. Demand since we opened the doors has been massive. As soon as people come in and start exploring the displays, they all say that you can feel the quality difference straight away.” The Kesseler kitchens range starts from £15,000 exclusive of appliances, so if you’re considering a kitchen renovation in 2021, you can visit their website to request a brochure or arrange a consultation call with them to discuss your project, ideas and requirements.

extra cost. Larders: The open-shelf cabinet is a good, solid entry level cabinet with adjustable shelves, the Pantry cabinet gives easy access via shelving and door storage, while the Larder cabinet is the ultimate in storage – full extension, individual pull out drawers mean that everything is instantly accessible and visible, with no void necessary above the shelf to lift items out.
Evolution 130: Instead of the normal 5-drawer base unit, Schmidt have raised the height of their standard base unit to 78cm (usually 72cm) which has enabled them to fit an extra drawer into the unit. A 6-drawer format means it is much easier to create a streamlined kitchen as well: 1 deep drawer & 3 shallow; 3 medium; 1 deep, 1 medium and 1 shallow – the options are many, but the horizontal lines will flow in perfect symmetry with other units in the kitchen. The extra height unit also caters for the taller profile of most kitchen users today. 3D Fit: With plinth heights from 7cm to 20cm, Unit heights from 52cm to 91cm, 4 different depths, and bespoke widths to the nearest millimetre, every single inch of available space in the kitchen can be utilised. Whether you are 5 foot nothing, or 6 foot 7 inches – the height can work for you! Schmidt’s standard 67.5cm base unit is joined by 3 other depths: 35, 62.5 and a jumbo 70cm unit – which can achieve up to 26% more storage, and of course more worktop space as well.

The British Craft
TRADITION At the beginning of the 20th century, the long history of furniture craftsmanship in Great Britain became a design process that is just as important today.
I
nspired by William Morris, the designer-makers of the Arts and Crafts Movement left the cities to establish workshops known as “guilds” in the English countryside. Rejecting the mass production of the Industrial Revolution, these skilled craftsmen used local woods such as oak, ash, elm and fruitwoods to create practical pieces with subtle detailing. For 19 years, The Design Gallery in Edenbridge has specialised in sourcing original pieces of work by important names from this period including Charles Robert Ashbee, Ambrose Heal, Robert “Mouseman” Thompson, Gordon Russell, The Barnsley Brothers and Peter Waals of the Cotswold School, and Arthur Simpson of Kendal. Many of these celebrated makers are still successful today. By the 1920s, traditional production techniques were being combined with new machinery and materials which led to the innovations of the Art Deco era. Laminated plywood with exquisite veneers, lacquered and silvered finishes and tubular chrome led the way to a modern look. Meanwhile, the demand for pieces produced in limited quantities to the highest standards by workmen who had trained for years in furniture making were produced in a unique, British style of Art Deco. Leading names
80 DECEMBER 2020
included the Epstein Brothers, Hille, Betty Joel, Waring & Gillow and Maurice Adams. As well as offering iconic ‘cloud’ dining and lounge suites, cocktail cabinets, sideboards and occasional tables by these producers, The Design Gallery has set up a 21st century bespoke furniture service called Period Designs. The workshops that restore the original pieces are also in charge of hand-making the Art Deco Contemporary Collection. “We wanted to bring our passion and experience in design history together with the perfectionist’s attitude to fine craftsmanship”, explains John Masters, the designer and co-owner of The Design Gallery. Customers can design and commission their own pieces, choosing from a wide range of woods and finishes as well as their own selection of upholstery. “Hand-crafted furniture has a legacy of its own,” says John. “It expresses the interests of the owner and the philosophy and skills of the designer. These are the antiques of tomorrow created for the homes of today.” Period Designs and The Design Gallery are open Tuesdays and Wednesdays by exclusive appointment.
