OUT & ABOUT

We will fight them on the beaches

On Tuesday 5th June 1944, under the cover of darkness, the words spoken by Winston Churchill years before were realised as the largest seaborne invasion in history commenced.

Supported from the skies above, wave upon wave of Allied forces landed on the beaches of Normandy as Operation Overlord swung into action and the liberation of France began.

In June, Chartwell in Westerham, the family home of Sir Winston Churchill, will commemorate 80 years since D-Day. Visitors will be able to discover Churchill’s role in shaping the invasion plans and his own determination to step onto the beaches himself.

“They must float up and down”

In the library at Chartwell is one of Churchill’s most prized possessions: a relief model of one of the Normandy beaches which was originally used at the War Office in the planning of Operation Overlord.

“The relief model of Port Arromanches in Normandy was recently featured in the BBC series
‘Hidden Treasures of the National Trust’”

It features ‘Mulberry B’, one of the floating piers that was constructed in Britain and towed over to France to help ensure the invading force could be kept supplied with men and equipment.

The need for the harbours was clear from the outset but the engineering challenge was huge. A memo from Churchill in May 1942 starkly set this out.

“They must float up and down with the tide. The anchor problem must be mastered. Let me have the best solution worked out. Don’t argue the matter. The difficulties will argue for themselves.”

Given this strength of feeling, and that Churchill had first sketched his idea for a temporary harbour in 1915 when Britain was fighting in the First World War, it is perhaps no surprise that this model is positioned at the heart of Chartwell.

The relief model of Port Arromanches in Normandy was recently featured in the BBC series ‘Hidden Treasures of the National Trust’ which followed work to conserve the model for generations to come. This episode is available on BBC iPlayer.

Commemorating D-Day

The story of the Mulberry Harbour is just one of many that will be shared at Chartwell from 25 May to 16 June with never-before-seen objects on display in the house. A small exhibition outside will tell the story of Churchill’s wait to witness the invasion for himself, and families can learn about different aspects of how Operation Overload unfolded as they venture around the gardens.

Triumph & Tragedy

Kentish Opera brings

Aida to The Stag Theatre, Sevenoaks

Kentish Opera returns to The Stag this Spring with Verdi’s well-known and much-loved masterpiece, Aida. Set in Ancient Egypt, this tragic story of doomed love promises impassioned arias, magnificent choruses and exhilarating orchestrations performed by professional soloists, a 25-piece orchestra and the Kentish Opera Chorus.  The company are also delighted to welcome young people from All The Arts performing arts school, and involve them in live performances of this fully-staged grand opera - something which is usually only on offer in South East England via professional and semiprofessional routes in central London.

Showcasing Verdi at his peak with one of his most dramatic works, this new production, sung in English, promises to be a treat for both performers and audiences.

The story is a classic love triangle – Amneris, the princess, is the Pharoah’s daughter and has beauty and power. She loves the hero warrior, Radames, but he is in love with Aida, the daughter of a rival king and a low-status hostage in Egypt. In the end, the love story and affairs of state are tragically intertwined.

Director Stephen Anthony Brown says, ‘Aida was originally commissioned by the Egyptians to celebrate the opening of the Suez Canal, but the theatre wasn’t ready in time and the Franco-Prussian War

delayed the premier further. It finally took place in Cairo on Christmas Eve in 1871. My favourite part is the last act. It has incredibly beautiful music which is also evocative of the terrible fate of the protagonists.’ Lexie Wisniewska, who plays the High Priestess in the show’s seriously eerie temple scene says, ‘The show is about power, it’s about passion and you can feel that, especially when we’re singing the Grand March. The intensity of the music gives you high, like a huge shot of dopamine so you just think yes, I want this! It’s a great feeling.’

Kentish Opera provides a fantastic opportunity to try staged opera with a full chorus and orchestra at affordable prices in local venues where you are close to the action - which makes a huge difference to the experience. Aida, in particular, is rarely staged outside large opera houses so come along and prepare to be blown away! Greensand Ridge Distillery will also be offering free local gin tasting on Thursday 18th from 6.30pm and during the interval.

Kentish Opera’s new production of Verdi’s Aida runs from 18th  to 20th April at the Stag Theatre, Sevenoaks, and includes a Saturday matinee. Further information including ticket details can be found at www.kentishopera.co.uk or call The Stag’s box office on 01732 450175

The Importance Of A Financial Consent Order

Since the no-fault divorce laws were introduced in April 2022, more and more separating couples are opting to deal with divorce themselves via the online HMCTS divorce portal.

However, there is often a misunderstanding that the divorce also deals with financial matters and the ability to bring a financial claim.

Couples need to be aware that securing a divorce alone only ends a marriage. Finalising financial matters is an entirely separate matter. This means that an increasing number of separating couples may not have adequately dealt with ending the financial claims that they have against each other by virtue of their marriage.

The finalisation of a divorce alone does not sever financial ties between a separating couple, it simply ends the legal relationship between them. This means that if no financial settlement has been reached and approved by the court by way of a consent order or an order imposed by the court, then their financial claims against each other remain open. This leaves parties vulnerable if circumstances change in the future, even if they had every intention of adhering to any informal financial agreement reached. One party may make significant financial gains down the line, whilst the other may suffer from ill health and find themselves unable to work. Without a Financial Order setting out how

finances are to be dealt with, there would be nothing to stop the party who finds themselves in a poor financial position, from making an application to the Court for financial provision against the other.

There is generally no time limit to making such a claim for financial provision. As such we would always recommend obtaining a financial consent order to prevent any future claims by your spouse.

Even if a couple has no assets to divide it’s still advisable to obtain a clean break order to dismiss any claims.

Obtaining a financial consent order not only provides clarity but more importantly, it provides security and protection from any unexpected future financial claims once a divorce has been finalised.

If you would like to put a Financial Consent Order in place, please contact Clarkson Wright & Jakes and our highly experienced Family team will guide you through the process.

House Of Hounds

Great dog groomers and much more!

With Crufts Dog Show, the UK’s annual canine highlight of the year, just behind us, a lot of dog lovers have been admiring perfectly turned out (and often perfectly behaved) dogs of all shapes and sizes. In case you don’t know, incidentally, the winner of the coveted Best In Show award was Viking, an Australian Shepherd. “Dogs don’t have to look perfect all the time, in best Crufts condition, any more than humans,” says Natalie Bayram, owner of the House Of Hounds canine store and groomers in Petts Wood, “but they do need to be healthy and comfortable, and that is what proper dog care is most about. Looking after dogs properly isn’t a one-solutionfits-all approach. Each dog is an individual, and that is what we take into account when our canine customers are led into House Of Hounds.”

That can range from the best washing, haircutting, and blow-drying for dogs, to nutrition. There are many foods to choose from, some for highly specific, medically informed diets. Then there are discussions on the best canine accessories, and how to make dogs comfortable in cars and at home.

“We’re based in an area with a lot of suburban foxes,” says Natalie, “so using the best fox poo shampoo is important! Our store is an Aladdin’s Cave of essentials and luxuries, with a wide range of natural snacks, meals, harnesses, and accessories. We also have our social media snapshot chair, and we can have a collar name disc engraved on the spot. Soon we will have our summer range in, including cooling coats and cots.”

Natalie, who owns three dachshunds and a pug, has made sure that House Of Hounds brings together the best, most natural, and thoughtfully sourced products from around the world. With its own parking out front, owners can easily drop off and pick up their dogs. House Of Hounds has created the perfect dog lovers experience.

Finally, a reminder from Natalie, “Come and say ‘hello’, or give us a call on 01689 328000. We have a regularly refilled dish of free treats on the counter ready for your dog, too!”

House of Hounds is open Monday – Saturday, 9.30-5pm.

We’re going Co-Ed!

I’m absolutely delighted to have recently announced that Bickley Park is becoming co-educational. Tom Quilter – Headmaster, Bickley Park

In the first phase of this change, the School will offer places for both girls and boys into its Reception classes from September 2024, building on the current co-ed Nursery. Then, from September 2025, the School will welcome girls as well as boys from Nursery through to Year 3. These year groups will then move through the School.

“This is a natural development for the school that will bring positive benefits to the whole Bickley Park community”

This decision comes following growing demand from current and prospective parents for a co-educational setting and the School’s commitment to meet the needs of modern family life.

Opportunity

This exciting move gives families the opportunity to twin excellence with convenience, by sending all of their children to Bickley Park to benefit from our highquality all-round education and excellent pastoral care. We are extremely proud of our reputation as an outstanding Prep School and are committed to strengthening our offer whilst staying true to the values and ethos of the School’s history. At the same time, it is important that we remain reflective, forwardthinking and in line with current market demand. The needs of our pupils is at the heart of all our decisions, as the school continues to evolve and adapt. This is a natural development for the school that will bring positive benefits to the whole Bickley Park community.

Outstanding Results at 11+ and 13+

From the moment a child starts their journey with us, we are determined to spark and nurture a life-long love of learning in them. Whether they are busy learning Forest School skills, having fun in the mud kitchen, or out and about on trips that tie in with our creative curriculum, the children in our Nursery and Reception embrace every element of our unique Four Quadrants of Learning.

As children move through the school, our small class sizes ensure that we explore, identify and celebrate the strengths of every child, no matter where they lie. Our priority is the children’s happiness in their learning and this in turn is reflected in their outstanding progress. Over the years, we have continued to enjoy excellent results at both 11+ and 13+, confident that the way we teach is excellent preparation for any entrance exam.

‘Excellent’ in all areas says the Independent Schools Inspectorate

It is this firm commitment to all-round success which led the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) to judge Bickley Park as ‘excellent’ in March 2023 for both pupils’ Achievement and pupils’ Personal Development, the highest possible grading for an Independent School. In addition, Bickley Park was named Prep School of the Year in 2021 for its ‘wellarticulated, coherent and holistic Four Quadrants of Learning programme’.

This well-rounded learning experience encompasses Academics, Arts, Community, and Sports and Outdoor Learning. Together the Four Quadrants arm our pupils with skills for life: a love of learning; the ability to communicate confidently; the desire to contribute meaningfully to society and show initiative, resilience, teamwork, and the confidence to take risks.

“Our priority is the children’s happiness in their learning and this in turn is reflected in their outstanding progress”

Fantastic Facilities

Both of our school sites boast excellent facilities which allow the children from Nursery through to the Senior Years to develop and excel. From the purposebuilt science labs, art rooms and theatre through to the on-site swimming pool, climbing wall and astro-turf pitches, the school provides a breadth of opportunity both in and out of the classroom.

A dedicated development and refurbishment programme is already in progress to realign the school infrastructure across our large site to ensure that all pupils continue to benefit from these excellent facilities at Bickley Park. This includes two exciting new playground developments being completed this Summer.

We are ambitious for the next chapter in the fine history of our School and are thrilled to be extending our community to welcome girls, enhancing our strong family ethos by creating a fully co-educational community.

I look forward to meeting many new families over the coming months.

Cobham Hall in the News

Recent months have seen another slew of firsts and exciting developments at renowned Kent school, Cobham Hall.

Boys make history

Sixty years after first opening as a pioneering girls’ school, a new age dawned for Cobham Hall when it proudly cut the ribbon on its first boys’ boarding house - Stuart House, named for the family to whom the Hall was gifted in 1613 by King James I (though the PS5 and gym seem to be of greater interest to the boys than their new home’s history). Mostly local day students and weekly boarders, boys now represent almost one-third of the school’s vibrant, newly co-educational Year 12 cohort, with many more set to join in September.

Stunning Steinway

As part of a prestigious new music partnership with famed Steinway & Sons, an exquisite Steinway Model B Grand piano now graces Cobham’s historic Gilt

Hall. As the Model B was being carried to its new home, the Steinway team spotted an unparalleled photo opportunity and invited Year 12 student, Yannes, to play in the grounds. The result: this incredible image that says so much about creativity at the school.

Cobham is offering an exciting Steinway Scholarship for the first time this year as part of the partnership, giving talented young musicians the chance to play this ‘perfect’ instrument and to participate in masterclasses with Steinway International Artists, who include such stars as Yaoying Yang, Lang Lang and Charlie Puth.

Lights, camera, action!

Cobham Hall’s 16th century home has long been a prime filming location and recent months have been no exception. Famously, Cobham’s grounds and interior doubled again for Eton in autumn’s final season of The Crown, and the school was also privileged to host the London Philharmonic Orchestra as they filmed performances of music from Genshin Impact – one of the world’s highest grossing mobile games. Extensively showcasing Cobham’s Gilt Hall and grounds, the resulting Genshin Concert 2023 “Melodies of an Endless Journey” already has some six million YouTube views worldwide. Most recently, the school featured as a location in Sky’s historical drama Mary and George. Aside from the fun of spotting their school on screen, Cobham students are indebted to these visitors who between takes have so generously shared invaluable insight into creative industry careers.

Hurst College strives to ‘go green-er’

The climate agenda is now more important than ever. Greenhouse gases are at a 4.5-million year high, one million different species are at risk of extinction, and 200 million people will find their homes under water by the end of the century. In a world where the richest 1% of humanity— arguably those best placed to tackle the climate crisis—are responsible for twice as many carbon emissions as the poorest 50%, is there really any hope of preventing future disaster?

The world is, at least, coming to understand the harsh reality that our planet now faces, and we must all do our part to mitigate the worst of global warming’s impacts. When everyone comes together, a little can go a long way. With this in mind, Hurst College is working extremely hard to promote its sustainability and operate in the most environmentally friendly way possible. The UN’s 17 ‘Sustainable Development Goals’, as a series of targets focussing on the world’s most pressing environmental challenges, are in the College community’s sights as it strives to ‘go green-er’.

Pupils take their own initiative in bringing the College’s sustainability goals to fruition. Headed up by our Sustainability Committee (2021), pupil and staff collectives (the Climate Awareness Group, the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Group, and the Staff Forum) meet regularly to discuss and implement sustainable practices across the board. To name just a few, clothes and pen recycling schemes are organised each term, and on Service Afternoon each week, pupils participate

“Headed up by our Sustainability Committee (2021), pupil and staff collectives (the Climate Awareness Group, the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Group, and the Staff Forum) meet regularly to discuss and implement sustainable practices across the board”

in recycling, farming, and woodland conservation activities. The College farm goes from strength to strength, and its fantastic produce—including cooking apples, eggs, and meat—is regularly enjoyed by pupils, parents, and staff.

Progress does not stop there. Not only has our wonderful catering team introduced many more low carbon footprint ingredients into our menus, by weighing and advertising the amount of servery food waste each week, they encourage all pupils to take only what they need. Across the wider campus, our grounds team have also been hard at work: by transforming a previously hidden well into an on-site irrigation source for our sports fields, they have significantly reduced our need to purchase externally sourced water for grounds maintenance. With so many fields across our 100 countryside acres, several of our projects focus on promoting biodiversity too. Wildflower planting on verges and hedgerows, switching to organic fertiliser, and engaging in initiatives such as ‘No Mow May’ all contribute to enhancing ecosystem development. hppc.co.uk

NA Positive Change

NumberWorks’nWords individualised tuition builds confidence and boosts results

umberWorks’nWords offers individualised tuition that builds confidence and boosts results. Maths and English are foundational skills that must be mastered for students to achieve academic success in many other areas of the curriculum. These skills are complex and do not come easily for many children, who can then get left behind in a classroom of 30.

For over 40 years, NumberWorks’nWords has provided support for children’s learning with its specialist maths and English tuition services, helping children of any ability get on track with their learning or extend children who are not being challenged.

The secret to NumberWorks’nWords’ success comes from world-class tuition software, our tutors who are subject matter experts, and individual tuition programmes tailored to each child’s particular needs.

Every child who comes to a NumberWorks’nWords centre receives a unique software assessment to determine their strengths and weaknesses. Once we have an understanding of a child’s capabilities, we create a learning plan in consultation with parents that focuses on closing learning gaps or extending their knowledge, rather than teaching them what they already know. Children receive one-on-one teaching from tutors who explain new concepts, and the students cement their understanding with practice using computer-based exercises. This combination of individual instruction plus independent practice is designed to create a confident learner in the classroom.

NumberWorks’nWords Bromley centre is also a fun, supportive environment that will help your child gain a love of learning. Many children who have been struggling academically suffer from a loss of confidence. Tutors at NumberWorks’nWords provide constant feedback on progress and award certificates for achievements. Based on success, children who attend NumberWorks’nWords experience a positive change in mindset about their capabilities.

Furthermore, from the summer term onwards, a new centre will be opening in Petts Wood, offering the same high-quality tuition services. If you suspect your child is struggling with maths or English and are looking for support, a no-obligation free assessment at NumberWorks’nWords is a great place to start.

OIN THE COUNTRY

Your local store for all outdoor clothing for the whole family, plus shooting accessories, leather goods, dog training equipment, and much more.

wner, Gail Thomas, explains how she got involved in this thriving business based in Badlesmere, just a few miles from Lenham on the Ashford Road.

Gail says: ‘I live at Eastwell Park, where my partner is the head keeper. Originally I was working for a national house builder selling houses but took voluntary redundancy. ‘

‘Enjoying a brief period of being a lady of leisure, I popped into a local shop, the Kent Wool Growers, for a pair of Wellington boots. Whilst there trying on boots, I chatted to the assistant who told me he had just got himself a new job and

would be leaving. He then mentioned that they hadn’t filled the vacancy and that the job would be perfect for me!

And so I ended up working for Kent Wool Growers for 7 years; a great place, very interesting and with great customers, fantastic characters and never a dull moment. This is where I learnt all about clothing, footwear and – most importantly – good customer service.

Chatting to a friend whilst having lunch in my local, I mentioned that I might like to go it alone and open my own shop. She then told me about possible premises that were only a few miles from home! The very next morning I viewed and secured it straight away. So started the ‘In The Country’ venture here in Badlesmere. Over the years I have added to the stock and am proud to say, I offer a fantastic range of clothing, footwear and accessories for men, women and children – oh! And mustn’t forget the dogs!

The shop has been open for nearly 9 years now and I can honestly say it was the best decision I have made and have never regretted it for a moment.’

You can contact Gail on 01233 742700 or check the website at www.inthecountrykent.co.uk

10 Tips to Refresh Your Health Routine at Any Age

Spring is a wonderful time to explore new activities and adopt healthy habits. Whether initiating a wellness journey or enriching your existing routine, KYN experts offer invaluable guidance to support a healthier, more active lifestyle, regardless of age. Samantha Thom, an independent physiotherapist at KYN, shares insights and tips for maintaining physical and mental health throughout spring and beyond.

1. Balance: As we age, maintaining balance becomes crucial as it naturally diminishes. Toe raises offer a simple yet effective exercise for all ages. Stand upright, use a rail or sink for support, and elevate your toes while keeping weight on your heels. Hold for three seconds before lowering steadily. Repeat ten times to enhance stability and mitigate falls.

2. Flexibility Focus: Flexibility exercises aid joint mobility and muscle function. Try at-home exercises like neck rotations, stretches, sideways bends, and calf stretches, which can be done seated if stability is a concern.

3. Strength Building: Strength training is vital for bone density and joint protection. Incorporate resistance training with small weights to improve balance and prevent injuries. Consult a physiotherapist or local gym for suitable exercises.

4. Outdoor Activity: Embrace outdoor activities like walking to boost physical and mental wellbeing and reduce stress. Walking aids in rebuilding confidence post-fall while enhancing balance and mobility. Consult a physiotherapist or online resources for guidance.

5. Swimming: Swimming is a low-impact exercise, making it suitable for individuals with arthritis and beneficial for endurance, strength, and cardiovascular fitness. Many local pools now offer improved accessibility options.

6. Mind-Body Connection: Yoga and Pilates promote holistic wellbeing, enhancing core strength and addressing back issues.

MOVEMENT FOR MENOPAUSE

Cold water swimming ‘improves’ menopause symptoms – what other activities have been proven to help? By Abi

Cold water swimming has surged in popularity recently, with a growing body of science backing up its health benefits – and now research suggests it could help alleviate menopause symptoms, too.

A team at University College London (UCL) surveyed 1,114 women who regularly swam in cold water, including 785 who were menopausal.

Some 46.9% said cold water swimming helped their anxiety, 34.5% said their mood swings had improved, while a fifth noted reduced night sweats. As for hot flushes, 31.1% said this symptom had improved. Those who swam more regularly or for longer intervals reported greater benefits, the research found.

Commenting on the findings, published in Post Reproductive Health, senior author Professor Joyce Harper, of the UCL EGA Institute for Women’s Health, said: “Cold water has previously been found to improve mood and reduce stress in outdoor swimmers, and ice baths have long been used to aid athletes’ muscle repair and recovery.

“Our study supports these claims, meanwhile the anecdotal evidence also highlights how the activity can be used by women to alleviate physical symptoms, such as hot flushes, aches and pains.

“More research still needs to be done into the frequency, duration, temperature and exposure needed to elicit a reduction in symptoms. However, we hope our findings may provide an alternative solution for women struggling with the menopause and encourage more women to take part in sports.”

Here are some other activities with researchbacked benefits for easing menopause symptoms…

RUNNING (OR ANY CARDIO!)

Entering midlife and beyond doesn’t mean you have to say goodbye to high-impact exercise. In fact, the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists cites aerobic exercise – such as jogging and running – as an evidence-based lifestyle measure to help manage menopause. It’s never too late to start, either. A 2012 study which looked at how aerobic training affects symptoms in recently postmenopausal women who’d previously had sedentary lifestyles, found after six months, symptoms such as night sweats, mood swings and irritability had improved. High-impact activity has also been linked with supporting bone density in post-menopausal women – which is especially important as the drop in oestrogen that happens with menopause can cause weakened bones and osteoporosis.

YOGA

With reduced anxiety and inflammation among its many science-backed benefits, it’s perhaps no wonder research also suggests yoga could help

with menopause. One such study, published in 2022 in Nursing & Health Sciences, found yoga was particularly associated with improved sleep among peri- and post-menopausal women.

STRENGTH TRAINING

Resistance or strength-training exercise is especially important for women in their 40s, 50s and beyond – firstly because being strong helps manage the effects of oestrogen loss and that previously mentioned higher risk of osteoporosis. It also supports metabolic function, which is good news for health overall. One study published last summer found menopausal women who took up resistance training (this could be lifting weights or dumbbells, using the strength-building gym machines or even just your own bodyweight with a mat-based workout), had better muscle mass than those who only did cardio. While not a menopause symptom as such, women’s risk of cardiovascular disease can increase post-menopause – and regular exercise has been found to help with this too. One data review published last year found all forms of regular exercise – including aerobic and resistance training – were associated with better cardiorespiratory fitness after menopause.

Know your breasts!

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK and is not exclusive to women. Approximately, 1 in 8 women in the UK will develop breast cancer in their lifetime and about 370 men will be diagnosed every year.

Being aware of the signs and symptoms of breast cancer is important as it can help diagnose cancer quickly and ultimately save lives. You may be surprised to know then that, according to a survey by Breast Cancer Care, a fifth of women don’t know how to check their breasts and a third are not checking regularly.

The best way to get to know your breasts and what is normal for you, is to look and feel them regularly. There is not a special way in which you should feel your breasts, so do this in a way that is comfortable for you but make sure you check your armpits and all the way up to your collar bone too.

When looking for signs and symptoms of breast cancer, most people know to look for a lump but there are many other symptoms to be aware of:

• Swelling or a lump in the armpit

• Thickened breast tissue

• Lump or thickening behind the nipple

• Dimpling to the skin of the breast

• Painless lumps in the breast

• Rash affecting the nipple or skin across the breast

• Changes in the size or shape of a breast

• Nipple inversion

• Discharge from the nipple

At Sevenoaks Medical Centre, you have access to a one-stop Breast Clinic. Their team of specialists will be able to walk you through the process, answer any questions and make your experience as stress-free as possible. If you are concerned, it is always best to get seen as early diagnosis can make a big difference to treatment.

To find out more about the breast clinic, visit: sevenoaksmedicalcentre.com or call 01732 775 800 to make an enquiry.

Joint replacements to treat painful arthritis of the thumb

Osteoarthritis affecting the joint at the base of the thumb is very common. It may cause pain, particularly with gripping and twisting movements such as opening jars or with any activity which involves applying pressure with the thumb, and if severe even pain at rest. Initially the pain is managed by using your hand differently, pain killers and splints. Beyond this a steroid injection into the joint can relieve the pain, but it’s unpredictable as to how well and for how long.

If the pain remains severe and is affecting someone’s quality of life there are surgical options. The standard surgical treatment for many years has been a trapeziectomy, which involves removing the arthritic bone. More recently, however, there is good long term follow up data coming out for a new generation of implants.

The benefits compared with a trapeziectomy are that patients don’t need to go into a plaster cast after the operation, the hand recovers more quickly, and patients who have had a trapeziectomy in one hand and a replacement in the other report that the hand with the replacement feels more normal. It is not suitable for all patients with painful arthritis at the base of their thumb. If the neighbouring joint is arthritic, or the bone very deformed or weakened by the arthritis a joint replacement isn’t appropriate.

The surgery is done as a day case under an awake regional block or general anaesthetic and the patients I have treated so far seem to be very pleased with their results

If you have painful arthritis at the base of your thumb which has not responded to conservative treatment and would like to discuss surgical treatment, please ask your GP for a referral.

Celebrating Live in Care Launch with Radfield Home Care

Radfield Home Care Bromley, Orpington & Beckenham celebrated their Live in Care Launch event at Community House, Bromley on Tuesday 19th March at the Connections Cafe in partnership with Quest Soul Theatre C.I.C, Mercedes Yearley. This follows Radfield Home Care being named the “Most Outstanding Home Care Group 2023” at the Home Care Awards.

Simi Ghuman, co-owner & director at Radfield Home Care Bromley said: “The event was a huge success and raised awareness of what Live in Care is and the difference it can make in people’s lives. Many do not know what options are out there for them and their loved ones and can reluctantly end up in a care home. This new service provides our community with another care option that helps them remain connected to the important things in life, at home.”

The event was well attended with the Mayor of Bromley, Mike Botting discussing the importance of having a choice and a range of options when deciding what care is best for the individual concerned. When considering Live in Care you need to think about some of the following points:

1. Live-in care provides one-on-one care and attention, ensuring that the individual’s specific needs and preferences are met.

2. Comfort of home: Being able to receive care in the comfort of their own home allows individuals to maintain their independence and familiar surroundings.

3. Companionship: Live-in care provides companionship and emotional support, reducing feelings of loneliness and isolation.

4. Continuity of care: With a live-in Carer, there is consistency in care, which can lead to better health outcomes and improved quality of life.

5. Support with daily tasks: Support with daily tasks: Live-in Carer can assist with daily activities such as meal preparation, medication management, personal hygiene, and household chores.

6. Peace of mind for family members: Knowing that their loved one is receiving personalised care and support at home can provide peace of mind for family members.

7. Cost-effective: In comparison to residential care facilities, live-in care can be a more cost-effective option for individuals who require ongoing care and support.

At the Launch, there was also a splendid performance by Carers in Harmony Choir Group with their amazing singing. There was also a talk by Brenda Parsons from the Orpington District E Rotary Group regarding items needed for creating Dementia Memory Boxes for the residents of Bromley.

Radfield Home Care have been providing care for over 40 years and are on a mission to make ageing a more rewarding experience for all involved. Along with live in care, Radfield also provides companionship, dementia support, personal care, domestic assistance and much more.

DOPAMINE DECOR

Gowild. Release yourself. It’s the time. Dopamine décor has ar rived and – as the name suggests – it’s zooming in on using the home to boost the mood. Think of it as one step further from viewing the home as a sanctuary. The home has become a playground.

At its core, dopamine decor is inspired by dopamine, the ‘feel-good’ chemical responsible for pleasure and reward. Integrating its influence into interiors taps into human psychology, and has led to the current boom in interiors created to amplify happiness.

So what does dopamine décor actually look like? There’s adventurous colour, there’s tempting texture, there’s alluring lighting, there’s unusual shape,

“There’s adventurous colour, there’s tempting texture, there’s alluring lighting, there’s unusual shape, but most of all there’s variation”

but most of all there’s variation. What makes us happy is so innately personal, that no two dopamine-dosed rooms will ever look the same. It could be a space full of mismatching furniture, a single powerful statement piece amongst the calm, an unpredicted combination of colours, texture where before there was smooth, moments of design that ignite surprise or a proudly showcased personal collection of objects. It’s design meeting emotion in the most playful and unrestricted way.

LIBERATION FROM LIMITATION

Juxtaposition and contrast are key. ‘Clashing’?

Throw that word out of the window and embrace eclecticism. Sure, not everything that brings you visual bliss coordinates with each other, but so what? The point is it’s beautiful to you, and it’s your home after all – forget about how the rule book says it should look and hone in on how you feel, not how you think you’re meant to feel. Get that dopamine going, decorate with abandon and design a space that’s all the more unique, vibrant and authentic for it.

Identify items that evoke a burst of positivity when you see them. Treat these as the centre of your space, and build up around them, working them into an existing set up – there’s no need to completely redecorate, using a single or few pieces of furniture, lighting, rugs or accessories can be

just as cheerful and effective as creating a whole new look.

YOU DO YOU

The essence of the dopamine decor trend lies in selecting furniture and accents that genuinely bring you joy and reflect you as a person, so each object or aesthetic is imbued with meaning as well as beauty. Spaces should deeply resonate with you, prompting a surge of pleasure, contentment or sheer delight and moving past the way they look on a surface level to forge a connection with the sentiments. Rooms set ups can take inspiration from childhood, objects, art, a treasured collection, fashion, travel or a memory – dig deep into yourself.

LEVEL UP THE JOY FACTOR

Nothing is off the table – your personality is centre stage, and the furniture and objects you surround yourself with should bring a smile at every turn. Perhaps they evoke a joy-filled memory, or perhaps they stir up an emotion, or perhaps their sheer beauty gets your heart beating. Dopamine decorating is not about being subtle –now’s the moment to be daring and introduce any objects, colours or themes that ignite passion and awaken the senses. Don’t hesitate – put it on display in its full glory and cheerful splendour.

BRING ON THE BRILLIANCE

For many of us, colour plays a dominant role in decorating for that hit of happiness. From a rainbow explosion in one space to a gentle smattering of calmer shades, either one colour or a combination of many tends to strike a chord with us on a deep level (that sometimes we

“Nothing is off the table –your personality is centre stage, and the furniture and objects you surround yourself with should bring a smile at every turn”

can’t even explain). As dopamine décor gathers momentum, bright, cheering hues are on the up, with kaleidoscopic spaces filled with vivid, often contrasting colours filling homes with optimism and good vibes. An easy way to get involved? Choose objects individually rather than trying to make sure they all ‘work’ together – don’t worry about that – and organically layer shapes, forms, colours, patterns, or materials to grab attention and lift the spirits, or simply go a bit bolder with the colours you’re naturally drawn to.

BEYOND BRIGHTS

While dopamine’d homes are the antithesis of quiet neutrality, that’s not to say calming, colourless spaces can’t get involved, and if you’re not an every-colour-all-in-one-space type of person, that’s great too. It’s about what brings personal satisfaction. A dash of pigment, texture or interesting material here and there can be just as effective as a space drenched in colours if it rouses your senses. While vibrant, elaborate, high contrast designs often define this style, a minimalist approach can also classify as dopamine decor if it creates a glow of wellbeing and a jolt of joy. chaplins.co.uk

Then we can add flowers and shrubs for contrast, colour and texture. This approach works just as well for commercial premises if they have borders, lawns, car parks or other spaces ready to be transformed. If you own a business, why not enhance your local area and help your staff and passers-by to see and enjoy a new oasis instead of bare tarmac or plain grass?

“Admittedly, we have never been called out to plant up a single window box, but perhaps we might! Our pleasure comes from our ability to unlock the potential of any outdoor space and seeing the reaction of our clients, as they

understand the joy that transformation can give them.

“To take another example, people love a ‘wow factor’, having something special to them that feels unique and makes them stand out. Outdoor spaces such as gardens can have a ‘wow factor’ as much as any evening dress, well-tailored suit, or bespoke artwork. One striking example is Victorian tiling. Known as renowned builders and engineers, the Victorians created long-lasting, beautifully patterned and coloured tiling installations that made many homes memorable. Today, we honour their craft as it lives and breathes in the capable hands of our craftsmen who are specialists in the design and fitting of Victorian floor tiles and contemporary geometric designs. We have many years of experience in the repair and care of traditional Victorian black and white path tiles and in the myriad of Victorian mosaic tile schemes.” Terra Firma Landscapes offer a full Victorian tiling design, installation, and restoration service with our supply partner, London Mosaic. They can source new and reclaimed tiles, including architectural tiles, encaustic tiles (where the pattern is inlaid into the tile), geometric tiles, heritage tiles and micro mosaic tiles, along with additional period accessories such as daisy grates, path edging, steps and York stone paving. They also provide contemporary options such as porcelain paving.

Revolutionising Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning

In the heart of the South-East, a new name is making waves in the realm of cleaning services. Zero Dry Time, a renowned franchise with a family-based ethos, has arrived to revolutionise the way people perceive carpet and upholstery cleanliness.

At the core of the Zero Dry Time philosophy lies an understanding of modern-day requirements for a quick, efficient, and thorough cleaning service. They alleviate the common inconvenience of having to wait for carpets to dry, a painstaking process that can take up to 24 hours with traditional methods. By employing cutting-edge technology and eco-friendly cleaning products, they promise and deliver a “zero dry time” experience.

Their quick-dry technique is more than just a time-saver; it’s also a beacon of health. Traditional carpet cleaning often leads to damp fabrics, which can become breeding grounds for mould and bacteria. Zero Dry Time’s approach mitigates these risks, contributing to a healthier home environment.

Another hallmark of Zero Dry Time is their commitment to customer satisfaction. Their skilled technicians are trained to provide not just cleanliness but also top-notch customer service. This shines through in the fact that they will provide you with a free in-person survey and quote service, in which they will fully explain the processes and provide a sample area clean.

One of the most distinct advantages of Zero Dry Time is the convenience for commercial spaces. The fast-paced commercial environment can ill afford the disturbance of sections cordoned off for drying carpets. The immediate-dry methodology creates a seamless transition from cleaning to continuing business operations without losing a step. Zero Dry Time recognises the importance of sustainability. The solutions they use are safe for both pets and children, underscoring their pledge to environmental responsibility. Over time, Zero Dry Time has built a reputation for reliability and excellence. Positive testimonials and repeat customers are a testament to their success in providing a service that fits perfectly with the fast-paced modern society. Whether it’s a home or a business, the impact of their work is unmistakable—a cleaner, fresher space with no downtime. So, if you’re looking to freshen up your flooring or upholstery without putting your life on hold, Zero Dry Time is the go-to solution. Say goodbye to the inconvenience of soggy carpets and indulge in the freshness of cleanliness with Zero Dry Time.
